mars started following To upgrade or not to upgrade to Invision v5 (and the future of Psynews)
-
Hello This forum has been running on Invision Power Board for 20 years now. Before that we were on vBulletin I think, and previously on something terrible I forgot the name of. At first Psynewss was not a forum. It was added on top of the reviews resources back in 2001 or 2002. And it moved to a forum/community only as less care was given to the reviews part. So back in 2006 we purchased a *perpetual* Invision Board v3 license for $185. In 2017 when Invision v4 was released, they told us our *perpetual* license only applied to v3 and they fucked us! We ended up making a fundraiser (see here and here). And we collecxted more than 300€ thanks to you. Besides the site was moved from a VPS to a spare Raspberry Pi to save on hosting, and more recently on a mini PC next to my fiber box. Sweet, so we only paid for the Invision subscription basically. We paid $25/semester for 4 years, then those same gentlemen at Invision boosted the price to $40/semester (a 60% raise, mind you) and we've been paying that for 4 years now. Total for 8 years of subscription: $520, so we'll double the 300€ initially collected by the end of the year, but, hey, Psynews cannot be stopped just like that and although it's nearly an archive and that's a cost I can support. One year ago give or take, Invision v5 was released and I didn't care. And recently this appeaed in the Admin console. Our version of IPS is phased out at the end of the year. After that I'm not sure if/how/how much they'll charge us but the bad part is we'll have no more security upgrades... So I checked the upgrade path, which, obvisouslyn led me to the licence upgrade page, which shows that instead of letting us pay for each of their products separately, now we'll get their whole suite for a better price. Alas...a better price for those who used more of their products than the sole forum like we did. So, I was only half surprised to see a 150% price increase : 40*2 + 40*2*150% = 200. Well, we've come a long way since our perpetual licence (lol) that cost less than one year of their new subscription model, haven't we ? I'm really glad they recognize our loyalty in the matter. We have many options: Upgrade to IPS v5 despite the price. Honnestly, although I was happy to pay $80/year for an almost-archive site, I'm not keen on paying $200/year for all sorts of features that we won't even use. I'm not in favor of this also because we've been Invision customers for 20 years and they keep fucking us over. A new funraiser. MEH. At this rate we'd need one per year for site that's barely got a pulse. Migrate to another cheaper/free forum. Maybe doable, we need to check which are available, but they must have some scripts to let us convert our database to theirs. Convert the whole forum to a read only archive. I've been thinking about this over the past year after a talk with an Admin here. We have the database, we could maybe hack something (with AI or not), to make all this a read-only site. At all rates it has to be reversible, for, even though Facebook killed nearly every forum on the planet, the monster is also dying now, so who knows if there's going to be a forum revival in the future ? * Do nothing. And we might be facing hacks if security issues are discovered, or we might have issues in the future if a new version of php breaks something. But why not, it's a stand we can take for a couple of years. We have (at least) until the end of the year to find a solution. And Id be happy to read your input now. As you read between the lines, this is not only about the cost. This is also about the future of Psynews. We have to think of what to do with it for the years to come or what legacy to preserve. With love, fabien mars.

Please read and respect these rules/guidelines before posting new reviews. 1. Please use the appropriate release year before posting . If you're posting in a "multiple year" thread (ie. 1990-1994) then specify the release year in the thread title. 2. If youre an artist / label that wants to promote a new release please use the Promos group and not this one! ANY promos found in the reviews section will be moved and the one responsible for it warned. 3. This section is for psytrance reviews and psytrance related genres reviews. If you want to discuss the best releases this year, what albums should be considered classics, the reviews section layout, the quality of reviews, the latest Tool release, want to request a review, etc. etc., then please use the General or Off-Topic sections of the forum! This is intended for psytrance music and its subgenres so no reviews of parties or other music genres. A bigger tolerance will be allowed for old stuff (stuff released before 96) since back then there wasn't an "official definition" of psytrance. Also chillout/ambient genres are allowed as per usual. 4. Before posting a new review, check if a review of the album hasn't already been written. If its the case then write your review in the already existing thread and do NOT open a new one! Finding older topics should be easy, use the Search function: type part or the whole album title and dont forget to limit the search to the subforum of the year you want to post in. If you're starting a new thread for a compilation then you should ALWAYS write the title under the format : "V/A - Name of comp". So that all the compilations will be easier to find. So do NOT start a topic with "VA" (no "/" between the V and the A) or "V/A :" (":" instead of "-"), "VA Name of Comp" (no "-" between the V/A and the name) etc. This is because how search works. 5. When opening a new thread put the name of the album and artist in the topic title and make sure it doesn't have any typos (or else the search function wont work). If you made a mistake, you can easily re-edit the title by using the Edit button at the end of your post, if that function is not working, then use the report function and report your topic to moderators asking to correct the typos. (UPDATED 2023) 6. You should aim for the first post to be more informative, but honestly since the review forum has become a bit of a graveyard, just posting an album you wish to be discussed with a mini review is, at this point, more than enough. Here is a few well made reviews that should give the general idea on how an informative review could look! https://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?/topic/54539-solar-fields-movements/ https://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?/topic/56930-fragletrollet-playground-of-spirit-shaman-film-records-media https://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?/topic/54395-crop-circles-tetrahedron https://www.psynews.org/forums/topic/73083-martian-arts-giant-locusts-tip-records/ 7. Personal grudges against artists or reviewers are not welcomed and will be deleted and might lead to moderation so try to use your brain before posting. If you have anything to say to the artist or another reviewer you can always PM (Private Message) or e-mail them. 8. When you open a thread please include Cover Art, Tracklist(preferably with track lengths), release date, label etc. relevant information regarding the album you are reviewing. Also it might be a good idea to include links to shops that are selling the release.

Hi, My daughter and I are currently in Albuquerque, USA, and we spent the last two days with @Jon Cocco, Psynews member since 2001, as I'd mentioned here. Jon is known for his EXTENSIVE reviews, that you may read here: https://www.psynews.org/forums/profile/523-jon-cocco/ Although we all have our jobs and occupations, we've been reflecting on how Psynews changed our lives, and the lives of many other people. That's where I met @Anoebis @Skytrancer @tbe @Filteria, Ubik, Tequila, @moni and many many others as you know. Last time I'd come to the US, in Y2K, I'd also stayed at another Psynews visitor and Goatrance fan's place as well. Jon was so kind as to call me when I was recovering from my cencer bac in 2013, and I'll never forget it. So yesterday we visited ABQ and Santa Fe with Jon and his lovely wife Mary. It took 20+ years but and Psynews made that possible!

Oh hell time flies, it feels like I wrote the 20th bday thread not so long ago, but turns out if was before the Covid crisis... It's still accurate. What more is there to say to that? The is not the most active community but it should stay online as it contains a goldmine of information about Goatrance and Psytrance. BTW for those who don't know from the FB post, Psynews was moved to a brand new server one month ago, it feel so much faster now. Psynews certainly changed our lives. It changed mine big time, I keep realizing it. It was a big launchpad for several projects (Suntrip, Filteria...) It's like a fabric of wonderful people all around the world. Mind you, I'm even going to finally meet @Jon Cocco in the flesh next summer as he invited me to his place in the USA. Psynews keeps amazing me with everything it helped creating or enabled along the years. For those who need some more insights about this community, I still have this other thread in store HAPPY BIRTHDAY !

Right. BREAKING NEWS: It was all migrated to his very board but it's hidden alongside the moderators' forum. Seems the latest messages were posted on October 22nd 2008. I don't remember exactly the circumstances of the shut down. Probably too much of a mess.

Hm probably a power failure or something, we a had a couple of very short outages. There is an UPS, but it probably didn't work. I'll heck that later this afternoon. Edit It's back online !

Done. Please tell me if "you feel" it needs more speed.

I'll tune the database, a'd that will be all right
-
Yes that's normal; the database is now on a virtualized container, all I could do to stay on mysql 5.7, which Invision required before accepting to investigate the issue from 2 weeks ago (and after that they complained the fact it was slow might have to do with our issues...pricks). But it looks like I can switch back to mysql 8.0 now, say the developers (pricks*2).... YEAH, right, when I have 1 hour ahead of me.

What RTP means is that he fixed the site unintentionally doing something neither the support nor I thought was a wise thing to do. Anyway, that's a happy ending.
