oCeLoT - vectorSelector Artist: oCeLoT (USA) Title: vectorSelector Format: CD (digipack) Label: Dropout Productions (USA) Cat. #: DPCD101 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 20 June 2005 Track listing: 01. 04’57” Intro 02. 06’48” Snickety Snack 03. 07’26” Alien Harmonix 04. 06’45” Tine Tanies 05. 06’00” Penumbra 06. 06’45” Snooze Kontrol 07. 07’28” Electrix Connectrix 08. 06’48” Upwards Spiral 09. 07’23” Totally Tubular 10. 07’46” Livnoc Tulor Review: Bay Area Thrasher! San Francisco-based label Dropout Productions made their notable entrance on the hypertrance scene with the compilation Alien FM released only a month ago… And now they’re back with their second release – the album vectorSelector by oCeLot. Mr. Aaron Peacock released his debut album Aural Sects on Ceiba Records in 2003 and since then he’s released compilation tracks on such labels as Soular, Insomnia, Avatar Records + of course Dropout Production where he had two highly original, darkish tracks on the Alien FM compilation… This second album has been hyped around the net ever since it was released – let’s find out what the fuzz was all about… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Intro [100 BPM] Intros are coming back into fashion – like chilled last tracks on artist albums… Generally I like them – it’s usually a nice way to start a journey… Let’s you adapt to the sound environment you’re about to be exposed to…This is no exception - what we get here is a very experimental, atmospheric and dark track… A big mish-mash of various styles. Aaron shows off his talents here, as he tweaks through an industrial-ridden downbeat universe… Cold, harsh, static and gloomy… And very interesting! I’m ready… #02: Snickety Snack [140 BPM] We stay on the same experimental, darkish pad here – but now we get a subtle bassline to go with it… Yummy! … We’re deep in the Bay Area underground here – cruising at a very comfortable 140 beats per minute… Spacey synths, subtle melodic acid lines and just enough rippling industrial FX to keep me happy… This is some good shit – I like how Aaron keeps this melodic despite its grim appearance… Fuck me, this shit rocks! Brilliant track! #03: Alien Harmonix [146 BPM] I really like when a track name suits the actual music – and this is absolutely well-named… Alien harmonix indeed… Just like the previous track, we’re deep in the psy-trance underground here – phat, kicking, pumping alien trance – reminds me a little of old Orichalcum – only with a more serrated edge… Razor-sharp kicks, evil hisses and relentless acid-lines – seasoned with a no-questions-asked bassline… Again Aaron makes sure not to forget about the melodies – they’re in there - hence the harmonix! This is a dope track! #04: Tine Tanies [146 BPM] Aaron takes a different approach here… Nice! There’s a really cool, orchestral, majestic pad running in the background for a long time here – puts an otherworldly spin on things… Yeah, this is some medieval, spooky shit…. Like something the Misted Muppets would pull of if you fed them MDMA… Cut beats, percussion experimentation and the ever-present ingenious little acid-lines… I’m sure the break will work very well on the dancefloor… The last couple of minutes though seem to lack some of the energy put forth in the first half of the track… But still, nice track! #05: Penumbra [148 BPM] A penumbra is the area of partial illumination surrounding the darkest part of a shadow caused by an eclipse… And yeah, I can see that – this is murky stuff indeed… The bpm-count is a dead giveaway, but still… Holy smokes, this is hardcore tunage – with a dark, haunting atmosphere to scare kids, pets and neighbours… I really, really like the spooky, yet strangely appealing naïve melody here… Very forest-like – and very shroom-friendly I’m sure… This is the most psychedelic track thus far – brilliant! #06: Snooze Kontrol [148 BPM] Woow! Talk about an intro that will knock you right off your feet… What a cool surprise! We’re shifting towards more digital, electro-rich, acid-ridden hyper-trance now… Reminiscent of Phyx, N3XU5 and the likes… Though still with the trademark murky oCeLot touch… The rapid changes in pace are cool, but somehow I could’ve hoped for even more variation here… Don’t get me wrong, this is a very dynamic track, but when it’s this good I think I’m entitled to have high expectations… A decent track, but surely not the best here… #07: Electrix Connectrix [148 BPM] Here’s another fast-paced, in-yer-face stomping track… It’s tweak-o-rama – those stabs are indeed crazy, but somehow also a little monotonous – that’s true for the first half of the track at least… All in all, this is a very, very fast track – and to be honest it’s too hectic for me… I need some time to breathe… Moving on… #08: Upwards Spiral [148 BPM] Onwards and upwards… Another aptly named track here – you can hear the spiral from the get-go and throughout the track… Yeah, this is more like it – this track has the same bpm count as its predecessor, but it’s much trippier… It’s dark and fast-paced – but it keeps a melodic edge to it – and this it just how I like my 148-bpm trance to sound… The computer game FX are funny and puts a smile on my face… The tribal drums halfway through are also very cool… I really like the constant evolving here – spiralling upwards… Great tune! #09: Totally Tubular [148 BPM] We continue down the same path – now totally tubular! This is fast-paced right from the start… Night-trance with a melodic edge – tons and tons of layers of synths, acid-lines, percussion and atmospheric pads… With a big splash of electro thrown in just to annoy your neighbours! I really like the blend of naïve melodies and a hard-hitting rhythm section + the blend of old school sounds mixed with modern underground sounds… Totally tasty track! #10: Livnoc Tulor [144 BPM] We already had the downbeat tune, so the last track is also full-power psytrance… I’m not too impressed by the generic bassline here, but I can cope with it… The echoing-humming sounds are cool though and the filtered loops are cool for the first couple of minutes – luckily they morph into something else before they really started to piss me off… The transition @ 2’51 is insanely cool – typically oCeLot… All in all a pretty nice track – though on the verge of becoming too hectic and too loopy for my tastes… But very oCeLot – and a very nice way to end the album… Alright, I can see why this album was as hyped as it was… It was totally worth it! I really like oCeLoT’s style… It’s very diverse within a darkish framework… And Aaron makes sure not to forget the ever important melodies in his darkish psytrance… Well done! The production sounds rich and flawless too me – and this is one of those albums that works best on a massive sound system or in headphones – so make sure you do not bereft yourself from listening to this on a proper set-up! Oh and before I forget – Punkadelik’s artwork looks absolutely smashing here – this will look good on your CD-shelf! I like most of the tracks here – a handful of them are even very, very good – and they outweigh the less good tracks by far… All in all, this is a massive album, and hopefully an indication of where Dropout Productions are headed in the future… If that’s the case, the future looks pretty damn bright from where I’m sitting… Put on them shades! …Fans of experimental, borderline night-trance with a melodic touch should not miss out on this… Nor should any fan of diverse, darkish, underground, acid-ridden psy-trance… Arrrrgh – enough labelling, just check it out and find out for yourself… Enjoy! V/A – Quality Relaxation Artist: Various Title: Quality Relaxation Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Chill Tribe Records (Norway) Cat. #: CTRCD01 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 27 June 2005 Track listing: 01. 06’54” Entheogenic – Walk On Air 02. 07’38” Elysium - Fairytale 03. 07’02” Shulman – The Unexpected Visitor (CBL Carbonator Rmx) 04. 09’56” Ishq – En Soph 05. 08’11” Jaïa - Missing 06. 09’15” Cell – Secret Wedding 07. 06’53” PhasePhour – Unpronounced Numbers 08. 09’30” Elysium vs. Space Cat – Dub Connection 09. 06’40” Altitudes – Altitude 1 10. 06’49” Blue Planet Corporation – Wild City Review: Luxurious chill… Chill Tribe Records is a newly established label based in Oslo, Norway. It’s the brainchild of the well-known trance/chill reviewer, music-collector and party-organiser PKS (Per Kristian Slagsvold). A guy that does everything to the fullest: He’s got one of the most extensive collections of trance/chill music I’ve ever seen in my life – he’s one a walking, talking review-machine – and he organises parties with bigger and bigger names in Norway… A productive guy for sure! And daaaaaaaamn – what a track list he’s flashing on this debut release! I mean - it’s one living legend after another… From trance pioneers to chillage royalty – does it get much better? I think not, and I’ve been excited about this ever since the tracklist was announced… So let’s get comfy and chill out PKS style… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Entheogenic – Walk On Air When France-based chill producers Piers Oak-Rhind & Helmut Glavar released their self-entitled debut album in 2002 on 3D Vision Records I fell in love immediately… An album that still holds a very special place in my heart… The second album Spontaneous Illumination was released on C.O.R.N. Recordings in 2003 and the third album is coming soon on Chillcode Records… This track is floating, dubby, ethno-ambient – in the typical Entheogenic style… Subtle beats, floating synths and ethnic chants… And an overall very organic feeling here… All very nicely done… #02: Elysium – Fairytale Danish producer Kristian Thinning Andersen is on of the true godfathers of goa trance and tribal chill-out… He’s been in the game forever and has released three albums as Elysium and one as Elysium Project + countless tracks on compilations, etc… He’s also part of the progressive cross-over duo Holm & Andersen… This is peaceful, harmonic downbeat – with rich world music influences… An ethno-tribal fairytale sung in a native tongue… Very soothing and very relaxing… #03: Shulman – The Unexpected Visitor (CBL Carbonator Rmx) Yahiv Shulman from Israel is another one of the modern chill heavy-weights… I absolutely adore his two albums: The debut Soundscapes and Modern Tales released on Shaffel in 2002 + In Search of a Meaningful Moment released on his own label Aleph Zero in 2003… Both are modern chill classics – and now Carbon Based Lifeforms from Sweden are remixing one of the gems from the second album…. CBL are Ultimae regulars Daniel Ringström & Johannes Hedberg and they bring us a soothing, melancholy, ambient remix of this track… The flute-lines are particularly nicely done and the first part of the track has a very cool dreamy atmosphere… #04: Ishq – En Soph And now we’re really, really, really chilling-out… Matt Hillier from the UK heads the Ishq-collective most famous for the album Orchid released both on Interchill and Daikini Records + countless appearances on chill compilations… This is beatless ambient – complete with running water, singing birds and not a beat in sight… So this is as chilled as it gets and has already sent me to sleep a couple of times… My only gripe here is the odd placement of this track… I would have put it either as the very first track or the very last to ensure an even smoother flow… But don’t get me wrong, this is still a very good dreamy track… #05: Jaïa – Missing Yannis Kamarinos is another living trance/chill legend… Based in France, Yannis has been responsible for some of the most important trance/chill releases in our scene… The album Blue Energy has been a fav’e since it was released in 1998 and the new 2005 album Fiction has been getting rave reviews already… The track starts out as a digital ambient but later it evolves into faster downbeat… The harmonic pads in the beginning are nothing less than outstanding in their majestic, orchestral beauty… One of my fav’e tracks here… Essential! #06: Cell – Secret Wedding French producer Alexandre Scheffer has really impressed me with his many high-quality compilation tracks… Earlier this year he released his debut album Phonic Peace on Indica Music, but I have yet to fully explore that album… Anyway, this track here is similar to the Jaïa track in the sense that it also evolves from chill to downbeat… Just like you’d expect from Cell… As with many of the other tracks we get some cool ethnic vocals here – also the percussion section is pretty damn suave… Another top choon! #07: PhasePhour – Unpronounced Numbers Norwegian producers Eldar Von Essen & John Robert Egeland released their debut album ...Boiing & Zipp on Freetransform Records in 2004… This is melodic chill – with a very cool, distinct synth-line accompanied by breakz and subtle percussion… Actually it’s very simple, but somehow also very intoxicating… Works wonders in my living room. Brilliant track! #08: Elysium vs. Space Cat – Dub Connection You might confuse this track with the Liquid Dub Connection track that was released on the 2000 BNE/Yoyo compilation Life Is… But it’s not the same! This track was made simultaneously by Kristian Thinning Andersen and Avi Algranati – and only surfaces now… Finally! What we get here is a deep, dubby, dreamy masterpiece – made with the combined talents of Space Cat and Elysium each bringing their trademark talents into the mix… From the rich, tribal percussion section of Elysium – to the melodic antics of Space Cat… Add a lazy, dubby beat and we’ve got a winner… Beautiful in all it’s simplistic glory! This is a brilliant track! #09: Altitudes – Altitude 1 The promotional text dubs this track ‘the dream team track’ – and yeah that’s not far from the truth. Whilst the Altitudes name might not sound familiar, I’m sure the producers behind it will: Yannis Kamarinos & Gabriel Masurel… That’s right – Jaïa and Blue Planet Corporation!! I dunno how the hell PKS got these people working together, but it sure is a constellation that I wouldn’t have dared even dreaming about earlier… But it is reality now… Sweet! This here is a highly experimental upbeat tune… The construction is deeply original, and this will turn some heads for sure… A cross-over tune if there ever was one: Breakz, electro, tribal, melodic trance, ethno-dub – and more! I’m digging this a lot, a fine track for sure! #10: Blue Planet Corporation – Wild City Wild city indeed! We end this compilation with another track by Frenchman Gabriel Masurel – this time working on his own as Blue Planet Corporation… BPC is another legendary producer with one timeless album, loads and loads of EPs and countless compilation tracks… This track is similar to the Altitudes track in its oddball, crossover appearance… A highly original blend of various styles all keeping within experimental downtempo… DJs with guts will love this track – it can be dropped successfully in the beginning of most sets… So yeah, this compilation ends with a head-turner… Nice! Yikes! This is without a doubt one of the most impressive track-lists I’ve seen on a label’s debut release… You can really tell that PKS’ many years of musical digging has paid off – he knew exactly where to look and he’s managed to put together one hell of an impressive chill-out compilation… The big names did what they were hired to do – delivered outstanding chill tunes… This quality level here is close to perfection – there isn’t a single bad or mediocre track here, and despite the order of tracks I wouldn’t want this any other way… Another big fat plus in my cool-book is the very cool cover art + the extensive booklet that holds information on all tracks… That’s the way to do it Chill Tribe! This is already a benchmark compilation and this disc has found its well-deserved place on my CD shelf right besides my Ultimae, Interchill and Aleph Zero CDs… Any fan of soothing, relaxing ambient, chill and downbeat must check this out… Really! I will not hesitate to give this my highest recommendations… Enjoy! Para Halu – The World Of Peace Artist: Para Halu (Hungary) Title: The World Of Peace Format: CD (digipack) Label: Parvati Records (Denmark) Cat. #: PRVCD009 Distribution: Wirikuta Date: 23 Jun 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’30” First Track (Tempo Anpassen) 02. 10’12” The Invisible Hunter (In The Jungle) 03. 07’43” Siren’s Fiction (Jesus In The Black Masses) 04. 06’35” Creatures Of The IGY (feat. King Jr.) 05. 06’34” The World Of Peace (After Awakening) 06. 09’18” Domination (Through Controlled Minds) 07. 07’08” Demon’s Mother (With Fancy Hair) 08. 07’42” Animachine (This Is The Girl) 09. 07’33” Let The Peace Control (Your Body) 10. 08’52” Made On Planet Earth (Last Cosmonaut) Review: Magyar psytrance! This debut album from Para Halu is the 9th by Parvati Records from Denmark… A quality label among the frontrunners in the darkish hyper-trance label-pool that has yet to disappoint me with its top-class releases… Elite stuff for sure! Para Halu are Ádám Hohmann (Homen) and András Fekete (Pondesz) from Hungary…. They’re featured on a number of compilations on such labels as Nabi, Mistress Of Evil, Discovalley, Alkaloid, Serephana, Paradiso and Parvati. I really liked their hard-hitting tracks on the Psychedelically Yours 2 + 3 compilations… Great stuff – and I’ve been looking forward to this album ever since it was announced… Let’s enter the world of peace! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: First Track (Tempo Anpassen) “Listen and repeat… Come with me… I can take you anywhere you want…I promise to have you back before you wake!” Setting the tempo on this aptly named track… The intro is dark and minimal with some female robot repeating herself… A lot! … Boooooooooring! Luckily it gets better after the first three minutes where the track seems to find its direction – more FX are added and the guys loose the minimal approach… Tempo anpassen indeed! A good, but not great track… #02: The Invisible Hunter (In The Jungle) Check out the very sweet intro here… Just like 12 Moons did it, Para Halu manage to create the illusion of a digital jungle…Very well done! The pace starts out slow and kinda lazy – again it’s pretty minimal, but not boring this time… The pace quickens later on, and this evolves into a full-blown party choon… I’m really impressed by the percussion work here – it’s very original and very well executed… Also the tweaked acid-lines really mess with my head – sweet! Oh, and the long ending similar to the Megalopsy album rules too! A very good, diverse track! #03: Siren’s Fiction (Jesus In The Black Masses) “Nothing will destroy our circle… Ride the snake!” Jesus! Another very diverse track – if you thought darkpsy couldn’t be diverse, think again… A very atmospheric ambience is created here and the guys impress me again with their clever use of both audio-channels… These stereo FX sound absolutely great in headphones! Again the subtle acid-bits really suit my taste – and overall this track rules… As dark, moody and beautiful as The Delta – and that’s just about the best damn recommendation I can give this kind of music… Stellar track! #04: Creatures Of The IGY (feat. King Jr.) We first heard about ‘The Land of IGY’ on the 2004 Alkaloid Productions compilation True Reality? and now it’s time to learn more about the creatures… Homen and Pondesz are joined by some dude called Peter Takacs on this track… A kinda funky number, with a fast-paced bouncy bassline, rippling little acid lines and a beep very similar to that of my mobile phone when I get an incoming txt-msg… Anyway, this is a very driving track – constantly evolving in a technoid manner… I really like the bit @ 4’47 – I guess that’s what a climax sounds like in the ‘Land of IGY’… Intense! A great track - I wish it was longer! #05: The World Of Peace (After Awakening) This is the aptly named title track… And it’s a downbeat track – in the middle of a full-on party album!! Brave move indeed by the Para Halu guys – but it works just fine for me… I like to relax – and sure, after four hard-hitting tracks it’s good to chill out a little… Nice! Style wise this is also a very diverse track, ranging from virtually beatless, soothing ambient to upbeat experimental chill… All made with the serrated edge that is Para Halu! They pulled it off – this is a wonderful track that doesn’t ruin the flow of the album at all… #06: Domination (Through Controlled Minds) Beware!! A long moody intro with static hisses and industrial noise sets the pace for what we’re about to experience… A very dark, introvert track with big hints of techno/techy minimal/industrial - though still with a modest splash of psychedelia… The bassline doesn’t evolve much and is pretty much monotonous all the way through the track – as a striking contrast to the subtlety of the previous track… I’m all for variation – and that aspect of this track is cool… This is the hardest track thus far, and to be honest it gets a little too hardcore at times… But it’s still a high-quality track – and the Megalopsy-like outro rocks! #07: Demon’s Mother (With Fancy Hair) “Welcome to the virtual command environment. I am the artificial intelligence that will be assisting you...”As the title suggests we’re still in hardcore darkish hyper night-trance territory – and this is a brutal Para Halu track… Very Parvarti like in structure and composition… Mad rippling acid-lines, deep dark bassline and layers and layers of trippy FX to mess with your mind… Much better now guys – this is the way I like my hardcore night-trance to sound… Kick-ass track! #08: Animachine (This Is The Girl) “The Union Aerospace Corporation is the largest corporate entity in existence. Originally focused on weapons and defence contracts, new ventures have expanded into biological research, space exploration and other scientific endeavours. With unlimited funds and the ability to engage in research outside of moral and legal obligations, the UAC controls the most advanced technology ever conceived.” Yeah – I know, this is the same sample used by Sycophant in his Life And Death (Remix) track on the Ketuh compilation Hyperspatial Chrysalis released less than two weeks ago… This album has been more than 8 months in the making, so there’s no telling who came up with the sample first… Anyway, this is another darkish stomper – with a spacey electro feel to it… Packed with digital farts, electronic burps and enough acid-twirls to keep me happy! Nice track… #09: Let The Peace Control (Your Body) “Let the peace control your body…”Another haunting intro – soon interrupted by digital hisses, a busy bassline and a cheesy voice sample repeated over and over again… I do like the synth-stabs that are introduced later on – and the laughing is a nice little touch… But generally I feel this track lacks something – or maybe it’s just the voice sample that annoys me? A decent track… #10: Made On Planet Earth (Last Cosmonaut) Forget about a chilled track to finish this album off – we already had it! So it’s more Para Halu madness! Nice! Classy, floating intro here… Featuring church-bells – and a cool, creepy undecipherable voice-sample… The whole rhythm section is unbelievably cool – I dunno how the hell these guys managed to create such full, morphing percussion… Oh yes, this is forest music – very shroom friendly – and very reminiscent of some of the earliest Parvati compilations… Kinda like Droidsect, Dark Soho or a stripped down version of early Hux Flux… I luv this style – and I can’t think of a better way to end this very cool album! The long deviant outro is also spot-on! Brilliant track! How refreshing it is to see a hard psy-trance album with a peaceful message instead of a pretend evil devil-worshipping message… I know Beelzebub himself is on the front cover, but so is Jesus…This balance act is also evident in the music which is very varied – as varied as darkish psytrance can be… But it’s much more varied, than say the Psyfactor album… Also the inclusion of long outros in most tracks is very cool – Megalopsy showed the way on their brilliant debut album The Abstract Machine… I like when artists stray off the beaten path and takes some chances with their music… And this album takes a lot of chances musically… Way to go Para Halu! That also pretty much depicts the balance of this album in most aspects… Music wise and artwork wise… When speaking about the cover, I must also say how I find the artwork very, very refreshing and very cool… Nice one! Journey wise this album is close to perfection… With the exception of a couple of minor glitches, I really, really like this album. There are a couple of tracks that doesn’t really do it for me, but the vast majority of tracks are beyond average quality - and the 8 months of production time have really paid off… This is a very good album – one of the best I’ve heard this year. An essential purchase for fans of intelligent dark night-trance… Fans of Parvati, Trishula and the likes need not look any further… This album will entertain you for a long time… Go get it! Enjoy! V/A – Invasion From Hyperspace Artist: Various Title: Invasion From Hyperspace Format: CD (digipack) Label: Organic Records (UK) Cat. #: ORGCD009 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 6 June 2005 Track listing: 01. 09’17” O.O.O.D. – Free Range 02. 08’19” Jirah - Paradise 03. 08’39” Benefactor – Modus Operandi 04. 08’49” Pop Stream & Backspace – Oom Da (Warp Mix) 05. 06’19” Safi Connection – Hello Houston (Chris Organic Remix) 06. 06’41” Anax - Music 07. 09’00” Synthia System – Whammy Mammy 08. 08’41” Voice Of Cod vs. Chris Organic – Unusual Illusion 09. 05’32” 2PM - Catz 10. 01’20” Bonus hidden samples + effects Review: Organic summer trance-a-thon… This is the latest offering from one of the last active UK-based psytrance labels… Organic Records headed by Chris Organic, has put out a number of sweet tunes - the most significant being the Tsunami Benefit triple compilation… With Invasion From Hyperspace we’re treated to a mix of well-establish artists and a couple of newbies… All handpicked by Andrew Humphries from Voice Of Cod… Should be an interesting combo – let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: O.O.O.D. – Free Range O.O.O.D. has been in the game since 1994 cracking tunes from their Bristol base… This trance-collective consists of Colin Bennun, Stephen Callaghan and Nigel Bradbury. Nigel is not featured on this track though, but he’s replaced by Ramsay Melhuish & Ray Potier. No idea who they are or whether they are now steady members of the collective!?.... What I do know however, is that this tune is a taster from the upcoming O.O.O.D. album also called Free Range… This track starts out with radio static, pop-chords and funky guitars… And you’ll wonder if you put on the right CD!? But soon a particularly well-executed bassline hits your ears – alongside a buzzing synth-pad and some crackling percussion… I like the uplifting melodies, but generally I like my psy a little harder and with less vocals and guitars than this… But it’s still a decent track and especially the last couple of minutes are pretty nice… #02: Jirah – Paradise American Tim McCall released his debut album Outer Access on USTA in 2003 – and his work has been featured on a number of compilations… I was particularly impressed with his downbeat tune on Aleph Zero’s Natural Born Chillers compilation… That track had some amazing ethnic qualities and so does this upbeat tune… Epic melodies, a broad rhythm section and an overall impressive production… Reminds me a little of Juno Reactor actually – nice! A very uplifting, morning tune here… Nice! #03: Benefactor – Modus Operandi Benefactor is Chris Organic & Colin Bennun in cahoots… Just like they were on the Tsunami Benefit compilation… You can really tell that there are years and years of experience behind this track… It starts out very laid-back and kinda tribal – and soon we’re exposed to a trademark British kick-drum/bassline combo… A very mature and rich track – awfully trippy and very dancefloor friendly… And with enough nifty little acid-lines to keep me interested… Sweet choon! #04: Pop Stream & Backspace – Oom Da (Warp Mix) This original version of this track is on the Tsunami Benefit compilation – and here it’s remixed by the creators… Pop Stream is Yinon Oved from Israel – he released his debut album Into Orbit on Phonokol in 2004 and is very active with tracks on compilations… Backspace is Adi Milner and AFAIK he’s not released anything else… As you could expect this track is fluffy full-on… Very uplifting in nature and very commercial… But it does what it’s supposed to: Packs the dancefloor… That siren is hard to resists even for a grumpy old elitist trancer like me… And if I put on my cheese-hat I’ll enjoy this track immensely… I’m not wearing that today though… #05: Safi Connection – Hello Houston (Chris Organic Remix) I’ve not heard the original of Mishel Bitton’s track which was on the Digination’s Vol.01 compilation released last year by Spliff Music… But here it’s remixed by Chris Organic himself…This is pretty straightforward clubby full-on with a splash of Organic… Kinda sounds like Astral Projection dolled-up to please the club-crowd… Not my fav’e cup of java to be honest, but again with the cheese-hat on things might look different… #06: Anax – Music “Music began long before it was formalized into notes… For mankind it began with an accident!” Dusan Sekic from Serbia released his debut album Not Over Yet on Kagdila Records in 2004 and has tracks on a couple of hard-hitting compilations… This is a little harder than the previous two tracks with its deep bass and repeated naïve melodies… The tribal percussion is pretty classy here and overall this is a nice little, funky number that really picks up for the last couple of minutes… Too bad it all ends so soon… Tasty track! #07: Synthia System – Whammy Mammy “I’m about to be part of the chemical generation… Doves, playboys, biscuits, barrels, cali's, clear caps, china whites, rhubarbs, looney tunes, new yorkers, bang on! We're larging it! The Full Monty! Safe as houses, pair of trousers, what a laugh.... lets do another half!” Synthia System is Nick Howdle-Smith & Dan Warburton aka. Error Corrective… I’ve liked everything I’ve heard from these guys so far – especially the tracks on the Wild Rumpus compilation released only months ago were awesome… And they continue with the rugged, hard-hitting, underground style on this absolutely massive track… They’ve wisely sampled the movie Human Traffic, and yeah this track would go down SO well with a disco biscuit… Fuck me, it’s an awesome track – the rapid changes in pace, the razor-sharp stabs and hisses – and the overall phat wall of sound – it’s all good! I can’t wait for the debut album on Wild Thing Records… Stellar track! #08: Voice Of Cod vs. Chris Organic – Unusual Illusion Battle of the giants here: Andrew Humphries, who compiled this CD + Colin Bennun from O.O.O.D.… Teamed up with another heavyweight, Chris Organic… That’s a lot of talent for just one track! Hopefully this is a taster of what we can expect from the upcoming Voice Of Cod album on Organic Records… The intro here is very harmonic with just a slight indication of what’s about to happen: Hard-hitting, full-power psytrance with spacey synth leads… Very energetic and very trippy! It’s melodic, but still with a distinct gritty underground feel to it… I dig it loads! #09: 2PM – Catz Here’s the debut release from Polish producer Marek Gorski… As legend has it, the last track is often of an experimental nature, and this is no exception… This is highly experimental sound manipulation – breakz & electro bits mixed with acid trance… Very old-school at times, refreshingly new at others… A nice little track for sure, but way too short… #10: Bonus hidden samples + effects The value added bonus on this CD comes in the form of some samples + FX… ‘Hidden’ is an overstatement as it’s clearly indicated on the digipack what this is… A bunch of spacey FX that I’m sure will come in handy for bedroom producers… With a few exceptions, I really like Mr. Humphries’ selection of tracks here… It gets a little too clubby for my taste in the middle of the track list, but luckily we get some more hard-hitting choons later on… And generally speaking this is quality all the way! This CD is perfect for those late-night summer parties – and works pretty damn well in my living room too… Fans of UK trance should definitely check this out, as should fans of edgy full-on and well-produced, melodic! The summer is here! Enjoy! Favourites: 2, 3, 6, 7(!!), 8(!) V/A - Posse Artist: Varios Title: Posse Format: CD (digipack) Label: Domo Records (Israel) Cat. #: DOMOCD006 Distribution: Psyshop.com / File Distribution Date: 26 June 2005 Track listing: 01. 09’33” Insane Creation – Can Feel 02. 07’43” Sonic Soul – Pornodelic (Sonnenvakuum Rmx) 03. 09’32” Ace Ventura & Intelabeam – Nasty Peach 04. 08’09” Sensifeel - Available 05. 08’57” V-Tunes – 3rd Trial 06. 07’58” Liquid Soul – Be Free 07. 07’47” Nasa – Someone To Watch Over Me 08. 08’17” Sub6 feat. Michelle Adamson – 7th Son (Ticon Rmx) 09. 08’14” Tomtron & Liesegang – Song For You Review: I get by with a little help from my friends… Domo Records’ label boss DJ Nadi has been in the game longer than anyone care to remember… And now finally he’s compiled his first compilation… The aptly named Posse, showcasing the best from and around the Domo crew… Looking at the tracklist reveals plenty of talented artists, and this compilation has been getting a lot of hype in progressive circles… Let’s find out what’s the appeal of the posse is… (Seinfeld pun intended…) Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Insane Creation – Can Feel Insane Creation is Dave Walitza and he has previously released tracks on Plusquam, Traktor Schalllabor, Starsound, Interzone and of course Domo Records… To be honest this is my first encounter with his music though – so I have no expectations whatsoever… The intro is long and subtle here… Tension is building slowly by the layers of percussion added – and after a couple of minutes we’ve reached a groovy, funk-a-delic state of wellbeing… Progressive trance when it’s best! Tribal drums, nice little reverbs and a smooth bassline… The breaks are very cool and overall this is a very sexy track with a crisp tenderness too it… #02: Sonic Soul – Pornodelic (Sonnenvakuum Rmx) “Please let me die for you! … Hi, how are you doing sweety? Come on in. I already prepared everything for you. Just the way you like it… It’s so hot tonight…Are you ready? Do you want me to play dead? Do you want me to die honey? Please, please let me die for you…” Sonic Soul are Daniel Mueller & Anders Nielsson which are completely unknown to me in this constellation… Sonnenvakuum however (here credited only as Daniel Mueller) shouldn’t need much introduction… One of the leading progressive acts from Switzerland with loads of releases under their belt… I haven’t heard the original track, so I can’t tell you what was changed… Anyway, this remix starts out kinda dreamy and clubby – before a hard-hitting, yet gentle bassline is introduced… At first the bassline seems oddly out of place, but as the track progresses it validates itself… The lyrics here are among the most disturbing I’ve heard in a long time… Forget about all the darkpsy artists’ flirt with the horned God – these are truly shocking lyrics… WTF!?... Anyway, they fit the track nicely and will for sure turn some heads this summer… Brilliant track! #03: Ace Ventura & Intelabeam – Nasty Peach Ace Ventura is an alias of Yoni Oshrat from Israel – one half of PsySex… I really liked his track on Set/4 – Essentials released by Iboga earlier this year… I also liked the track on the 2004 Alchemy Records compilation Doppler FX that Intelabeam (Dan Keinan) was involved with… These two guys brings us a hybrid track really – somewhere in between progressive and full-on… The best of both worlds really… The rich percussion and bassline from prog + the floating, melodic leads from full-on… Kinda like Tegma or 12 Moons… It’s a very nice and evolving track, but I could have wished for just a little more bite... #04: Sensifeel – Available Philippe Sancier from Paris released his debut album Vision Of Life on Domo Records last year… An album that contained a few good tracks – but unfortunately also some very forgettable tracks… Anyway, this track starts out kinda weird – but very cool… You don’t really know what’s going on here with that undecipherable voice-sample, but your curiosity is definitely awoken… Slowly, but steadily the track then evolves into a bouncy progressive number… It’s both driving and evolving, and eventually very nice… Not an instant smash, but still a nice little, solid tune… #05: V-Tunes – 3rd Trial V-Tunes are Sandro Kulka & Hans Muester from Switzerland… I really liked their trancy progressive tracks on VP Records’ Inspirazzia, Groove Zone Records’ Back To The Future and Plusquam Records’ Wireless… Top stuff from V-Tunes on all these compilations… And sure enough – this is top stuff too… A rich, funky-ass rhythm section mixed with a beautifully executed trance-side… Throw in a couple of phat reverbs, and we’ve got a winner in my book! … V-Tunes are really one of my fav’e progressive acts and I hope we get an album sooner or later… Perhaps this track is a little too well-polished at certain times, but generally I really like it… It’s very smooth and very sexy! #06: Liquid Soul – Be Free Nicola Capobianco debuted on the Plusquam compilation Wireless with a track from the deeper, darker realms of progressive trance… This track is a slow starter, but once the bassline is introduced it’s evident that we’re in the deep-prog territory again… Sweet! This is pretty hard-hitting and intoxicating - will work wonders on the dancefloor for sure… Check out the dreamy break drenched in reverb and horny samples… Nice one! #07: Nasa – Someone To Watch Over Me Mikkel Rasmussen from Denmark has been in the game since the minimal craze a couple of years ago… This track starts out pretty rough and minimal - but soon we’re introduced to some sharp electro-stabs alongside some filtered synth experiments… Add a subtle bassline and we’re getting somewhere… This is a highly experimental track – reminds me of Beat Bizarre actually… We get all kinds of influences here – from tribal to house, over electro and trance… Groovy hybrid trance! #08: Sub6 feat. Michelle Adamson – 7th Son (Ticon Rmx) Ticon (Fredrik Gilenholt & Filip Mårdberg) from Sweden are among my fav’e progressive producers… They have yet to let me down, so I’m sure this remix is in good hands… Sub6 are Ohad Aharoni & Golan Aharoni from Israel and they released their critically acclaimed debut album Who Needs Love Songs on HOM-Mega Productions in 2004… On that album was the track 7th Son featuring vocals from Michelle Adamson – and recently VP Records released the 7th Son Remixes album from where this Ticon remix is licensed… The track starts with floaty, beatless pads + the now famous vocals from the original… After about one minute Ticon reveals their presence with their phat, funky groove and trademark kick… This is soaked in Ticon and damn, I love Ticon… And Michelle’s beautiful vocals are the icing on the cake… Amazing track! #09: Tomtron & Liesegang – Song For You German producers DJ Tomtron & Timm Liesegang are partners in crime and have worked together on a number of productions, including their album Electric Tandem released by Domo Records in 2004… My knowledge about them limits itself to a couple of tracks though… Anyway, this is a pretty fresh tune – bubbling with joy, but at the same time with a lazy, monotonous feel to it… I dunno how the hell that is even possible!? Anyway, I do like the trancy elements here – and the climaxes are cool, but too short! I don’t really like the weird female samples either… But despite the flaws, this is still a pretty decent track! DJ Nadi pulled it off… As always when you’re introduced to your friends’ mixed group of friends there are some people you click with immediately, some takes a little getting to know, whilst some you never really hit it off with… And that pretty much describes this compilation – and thankfully most of the tracks are in the first two categories… There are no bad tracks here, but the tracks I’ve indicated below stick out in my cool-book… This compilation doubles as both a great DJ tool and as a valuable living room entertainment… Nice! To conclude this is a very fine, diverse compilation within progressive trance – compiled by the very competent DJ Nadi. I trust his taste and I’d recommend progressive trancers to do the same and give this a try… Fans of Iboga, Plusquam, Groove Zone and the likes should most definitely check this out… I’m pretty sure you’ll like it! … Enjoy! V/A – Hyperspatial Chrysalis Artist: Various Title: Hyperspatial Chrysalis Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Ketuh Records (Portugal/Austria) Cat. #: KTHCD010 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 13 June 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’14” Psychoactive – Crazy Cabby 02. 06’36” Hefty Output – WTF? (Remix) 03. 07’19” Sycophant – Life And Death (Remix) 04. 06’30” Sungirl vs. Iron Madness – Buddhist Pyramidi 05. 06’12” Pondscum – Style Stalker 06. 08’27” Paranoize - Deception 07. 07’07” Phonic Request vs. Akhoa – Call 1334 (Remix) 08. 06’58” Psyboriginal – Spirited Away (Remix) 09. 06’28” Killer Buds - Biogenese Review: Chrysalis: Hang-out for neo-urban shamans and their initiated travel companions… ‘Its structure is that of a self transforming, pulsating, vibrating, and oscillating multi-dimensional crystalline fractal’… In other words: A space pupa! Ketuh Records is one of the most productive labels around – and despite the high release frequency label boss P_Mac still manages to impress with every single release… This compilation was conceived in cooperation with the Australian Triptamind – showcases five acts from downunder + selected choons from the Ketuh debut pool… As usual I put my trust in P_Mac’s talent spotting and once again it’s time to get Ketuhfied… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Psychoactive – Crazy Cabby “MDMA utilizes serotonin, opiates, like heroin, utilizes dopamine; sort of like the same sensation you get after sex. Amphetamines increase adrenaline, cocaine gets those synapses in the brain firing really fast. My product is 51 times stronger than cocaine, 51 times more hallucinogenic than acid, and 51 times more explosive than ecstasy. It's like getting a personal visit ...from God!”… Australian Steve Barr is joined by Scott the Monkee on this full-power hyper-trance choon… The sample from 51st State has been used by psytrance producers before, but it really fits this track… Its Australian heritage is indisputable with its raging acid-lines, flaring synth-tweaks and stiff crisp bassline… Very Digital Psionics-like in style – and very trippy! A stomping track that will immediately fill any trancefloor! Brilliant! #02: Hefty Output – WTF? (Remix) We continue in the same direction with this track by Australians Dan Verbi & Tim Hanlon… Their GHB-induced track on the In Crypto compilation was nothing less than amazing – and this track follows the same style and is pretty fucking amazing too… A deeply original, sinister, frenzied night-time track – riddled with psychedelic elements, and a badass bassline that will scare your neighbours… Wholesome acid-grind! … The breakdown is one of the best I’ve heard this year – WTF? Stellar track! #03: Sycophant – Life And Death (Remix) “The Union Aerospace Corporation is the largest corporate entity in existence. Originally focused on weapons and defence contracts, new ventures have expanded into biological research, space exploration and other scientific endeavours. With unlimited funds and the ability to engage in research outside of moral and legal obligations, the UAC controls the most advanced technology ever conceived.” We continue with more Australian hyper-trance… This time a debut track from Sycophant, which is Melbourne based artist John Vougioukas who apparently likes Doom 3… This is kinda like a hybrid of the previous two tracks… A dark, gloomy, frenzied hyper trance track – with enough acid-stamina and dancefloor potential to keep me happy! I really like the breakdown and the transformation of the track after it… “Your hell awaits you!”… Another smashing track! #04: Sungirl vs. Iron Madness – Buddhist Pyramidi “Do you believe in God?” Sungirl (Yana Polishchuk/Russia) really impressed me with her rocking tune on the Trishula compilation Ignis Fatuus released in 2004… Iron Madness (Ziv Viner/Israel) however is new to me, but he’s released stuff on Doof records previously… Both of them have debut albums coming out in 2006 + a Sungirl vs. Iron Madness album… Woow, that’s a lot of albums! Anyway, this track has one of the most beautifully executed intros I’ve heard in a long time… The soft, harmonic, ethereal orchestral music sends the listener on a voyage to the Garden of Eden… Pure bliss! And then BAM – the meanest bassline this side of Egypt catapults you straight to space… This is deep and dark horror trance – though with an epic, soft, melodic touch… Like The Misted Muppet on amphetamines… Brilliant track! #05: Pondscum – Style Stalker Pondscum takes us back to Australia… Luke Danielewski also had a track featured on the In Crypto compilation… And just as that one, this is an extremely dark track reminiscent to the style of say Psyfactor, Parasense or Xenomorph… Deep, pounding, repetitive teKkno-beats with a murky, yet trippy percussion section… It’s all very dark and sometimes even a little too monotonous for my taste… Don’t get me wrong, this is still a nice track – it just pales a little in comparison with the previous four… #06: Paranoize – Deception As on In Crypto, Paranoize follows Pondscum… Alex Ladyzanskyi from Israel really impressed me with that track – and this is equally good… We’re still in dark, gloomy, fast-paced night-trance territory – and this track has a certain haunting quality to it that I really like. Although this track has evident tech-trance elements it has less technoid influences than the Pondscum track…. I like this better… But approach with caution – this is horror-trance! #07: Phonic Request vs. Akhoa – Call 1334 (Remix) “Call thirteen point three four!” Phonic Request is Wilfried Decaesteker from France and he’s released track on TIP.World, Magma and Mandragore Records … Akhoa is Frenchman Olivier Charpier… I liked these guys’s darkish and experimental collaboration track on Psychedelically Yours 3 released by Parvati earlier this year… Gone are the darkest technoid beats, and we’re left with a propane-fuelled, psychedelic night-trance track… Funny bits and pieces are thrown in to heighten the amusement – and it works… Will leave you dancing around with a smile on your face! Nice little track! #08: Psyboriginal – Spirited Away (Remix) “Something’s coming… I wonder what? … How long was I asleep? … Actually I’m impressed you made it this far… And you humans always make a mess of things…” Behind the naff name Psyboriginal is Marc Freund from Australia – and this is his debut release. My fellow reviewer Lauryn described the Psyboriginal sound as close to the sound of Logic Bomb – only with a darker, more sinister feel… And that is very true… This is melodic, multilayered full-power hyper-trance… To be played exactly when the sun sets… Very uplifting, though never crossing the border into cheddar-territory… A very nice tune – and very, very trancefloor friendly! #09: Killer Buds – Biogenese “The readings don’t make any sense!... This is your last chance. The choice isn’t that hard. Come with me!...” Enzio, Marcelo & Tarcisio are Ketuh regulars. The dynamic trio from Brazil has been featured on five consecutive Ketuh compilations and their debut album Interfiber Skunk was released only a couple of months ago… As usual with KB we’re in the darker edge of the full-on spectre… Multi-climactic, highly melodic hyper-trance with an impressive amount of energy and tons of twists, turns and voice-samples… It’s typically Killer Buds and I’m afraid the novelty is starting to wear off a little bit… It’s a pretty nice track, but on this high-quality compilation it fades just a little bit… Well, I’ll be damned if Ketuh hasn’t outdone themselves once more… Forget everything about the alleged ‘Ketuh flood’… When the quality level is *this* high, I don’t mind being drowned! This is without a doubt the best compilation thus far – and if this quality level continues, the sky is the limit… Even though the Pondscum and Killer Buds tracks didn’t rub me exactly the way I like, they are still high quality track… But the rest is even better… Seriously, the quality level here is very, very impressive… If you liked In Crypto this is essential – I would go as far as calling it In Crypto 2… This is a no-brainer purchase for Ketuh fans - Also fans of Digital Psionics should not miss out… It’s brilliant! …Enjoy! Psyfactor – Evil Inside Artist: Psyfactor (Russia) Title: Evil Inside Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Trishula Records (Germany) Cat. #: TRISHCD004 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 13 June 2005 Track listing: 01. 06’49” Shitty Bastards 02. 08’06” Ghost 03. 07’37” I’m So Happy 04. 10’08” Child Of Darkness 05. 08’04” Hell Raver 06. 08’46” Brain Destruction 07. 07’52” Angry Goblin 08. 07’03” Fear Square 09. 10’03” Good And Evil Review: Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me… Psyfactor is Dmitri Korablin from Moscow, Russia. Before this, his debut album, Dmitri had released compilation tracks on Trishula, Inpsyde Media and Vertigo Records… Also he has a downbeat track on the compilation A Magical Journey released by Trishula’s sub-label Ajana Records simultaneously with this album… I really, really liked the two Trishula tracks – they both stood out on the compilations they were featured on… So yeah, I’m looking forward to this album – let’s take a walk down Elm Street… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Shitty Bastards Now there’s a smelly track name if there ever was one… The intro is bubbling and lukewarm – somehow indicating what’s about to happen… And sure enough, it doesn’t take long before the dark bassline is introduced… More FX are added, like darkish floating pads in the background + a heavily filtered synth-line… The bassline gets really fast later on – and unfortunately also really monotonous… Dmitri manages to save the day though, by adding more FX… I like the razor-sharp chainsaw-like acid bit towards the end… Truly unruly! #02: Ghost The intro is really cool here… Some kind of digital whispering going on… Spooky indeed! Within a few seconds the track is in full effect – a fast-paced, driving bassline sets the pace… Closely accompanied by a bunch of twisted, dark elements… Again there are filtered acid-lines, repetitive percussion and an overall dark atmosphere… Reminds me of older Dark Soho – just darker… Darker Soho! This is a really cool tune – especially after the break and onwards… #03: I’m So Happy Happy all of a sudden, ehh Dimitri? I guess this is closest we get to full-on on this dark album… It’s perhaps a little lighter than the first two tracks… But still, there’s nothing happy about this tune… It’s very dark, with rippling noisy elements… There’s some kind of dark melody thing going on here – designed to mess with you… I’m a sucker for acid-lines, and this track is riddled with those… A mad track… Mad I tell you! …I like it! Sweet! #04: Child Of Darkness “Spock, this child is about to wipe out every living thing on Earth! Now what do you suggest we do? Spank it…?” Cheesy track name aside, this track also has a very cool intro… Some kind of low ripping sound messing with your head, whilst tension is building in anticipation of the beloved bassline… Once it appears it’s accompanied by a naïve little synth melody – and the low crackling sounds are still around… Add a low, spacey acid-line and you’ve got a winner… This is a huge, driving, brilliant track! #05: Hell Raver Another track name that will make your mother proud… The bassline here starts out somewhat more blunt, but once the impressive rhythm section is introduced it takes on a fuller body… The acid-level is even phatter here than in the previous tracks… Oh my, this is brutal stuff… Very Parvati-like… Sweeeeeeeet! #06: Brain Destruction As if your brain wasn’t already destroyed by the first 5 haunting tracks – it will be after this brutal assault on your eardrums… This is one of the fastest tracks here – the bassline is simply merciless… And the acid is running thick… Perhaps the bassline is a little too fast, but generally this is a pretty nice track… I also dig the Twin Peaks-like atmosphere that Dmitri creates in the first part of the track – and the last part is simply MASSIVE… Nicey nice! #07: Angry Goblin Another very well crafted intro here… Moody, eerie and spooky… This is arch-typical, dark Russian vodka trance… Dark, introvert and repetitive – but still extremely trippy and dancefloor friendly… Similar to Parasense really… Oh, how I love those murky pads with ripping, filtered acid-lines bouncing along… Also the ending rocks – would be an obvious choice for DJs to drop as the last track in a dark set… Another fine track! #08: Fear Square Again the acid is running thick and the bassline is a deep, dark and pounding monster! Dmitri has a thing with filters – and somehow he manages to twist and turn those knobs just right… It sounds so fucking good – and I can’t wait to hear this one played loud on the dancefloor! Eat your heart out Goa Gil – this is horror-trance! Tasty! #09: Good And Evil As legend has it, the last track is usually for experimentation… And so is this! But if you were hoping for a nice chilled tune by Psyfactor, I’d suggest you seek out the Ajana compilation A Magical Journey… ‘Cause this may be experimental, but it’s not chilled at all… This is a little lighter than some of the previous tracks, but still, it’s pretty dark… Something like dark full-on would be a good bid… By far the most melodic piece here – with darkish elements all over the place… Pretty good, but not outstanding… Oh my – this album is definitely not for the fainthearted… With the exception of maybe the last track, everything here is dark, eerie and spooky… Fast-paced, acid-ridden, hyper-trance with industrial-sounding basslines and technoid appearances… Sweet! To be honest I don’t really like the cover – it’s more cheesy than scary… Also, I don’t like the trend with spooky (alleged) track names… I mean, what the hell is a ‘hell raver’ anyway? Angry goblin? Come on – you’re not scaring anyone Dimitri… But let’s not judge a CD by its cover – let the music speak for itself… And the music is very, very good here… I’m really impressed! This is the best darkpsy artist album I’ve heard since Kemic-Al’s Twisted Parameters… I pretty much like all the tracks here, and as such this is a safe investment for any fan of the darker realms of psytrance… Fans of the previous Trishula releases will not be disappointed, nor will fans of Parvati, Yage Records, Stoneage, Inpsyde Media and other similar labels… To put it short, this album is essential for fans of dark psytrance! …Enjoy!
