  3. This cover is actually pretty cool.... ...if only they hadn't splashed an Indian boyband in between the cool graphix! DP
  4. Well, look out for stuff coming from Com.Pact Records, Trancelucent Productions, Phonokol, Utopia Records and the likes... DP
  5. V/A - Set/4 _Essentials High-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: Set/4 _Essentials Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Iboga Records (Denmark) Cat. #: BOGACD28 Date: February 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’37” Ace Ventura – Cardiac Arrest 02. 08’06” Perfect Stranger – Nobody’s Perfect 03. 07’36” FREq - Lifeline 04. 07’21” Yotopia - Believe 05. 08’40” Sunseek – Jet Lag 06. 08’48” Cubica – Red Out 07. 07’39” Aerospace - Scatter 08. 07’24” Pixel vs. Ran Shani – Disco Nection 09. 09’29” Zen Mechanics – Ground Control Review: Bacon, Lettuce and progressive trance… This is the fourth opus in the Iboga Set series covering the broad spectre of rich, deep, progressive trance from all over the globe… This time it’s compiled by Yuli Fershtat known also as BLT – and the focus is mainly progressive trance from Israel, though there are also tracks from Holland, Portugal, Denmark and Australia… Anyway, let’s pop this baby in the player and check out the set… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Ace Ventura – Cardiac Arrest [135 BPM] The highly original name Ace Ventura (gulp!) is an alias of Yoni Oshrat – one half of PsySex… This however is far away from the typical melodic PsySex style – we’re on Iboga Records now, so obviously this is deep, progressive trance… After the initial cardiac arrest, we’re exposed to a very clean, crisp rhythm section… Smooth, funky and kinda wobbly – but still with an almost clinical sturdiness to it… The ‘climax’ @ 3’47 has a certain held-back charm to it making it irresistible… The floating pads are also sweet – just like the acid-ridden surprise ending… A very diverse track which seems to grow more and more on me… Sweet! ;o) #02: Perfect Stranger – Nobody’s Perfect [134 BPM] The stranger is BLT (Yuli Fershtat) who also compiled this compilation… I’m glad he didn’t stick to his previous declaration of not releasing anymore music – cause this is damn good! Crystal clear, tight percussion – with phat electro elements, tribal percussion and an overall organic atmosphere… There are no obvious climax or take-offs for the first six minutes, but @ 6’34 Yuli tears his goodie bag open… I could’ve wished for even more party atmosphere, but I’m sure that was never the intention with this track… A nice little groover nevertheless! #03: FREq – Lifeline [140 BPM] I always introduce Aran “FREq” Gallagher as one of the progressive trance-acts I enjoy the most... And that hasn’t changed…The quality level is impressive, and this is another sweet, sweet funky choon… Again Aran generously sprinkles big, massive melodic leads into the tune – this time with a serrated edge and a pinch of reverb… I can’t wait for Set/6 compiled by FREq + his third album coming in early 2006… Brilliant track! #04: Yotopia – Believe [141 BPM] Yotopia is Yoni Rimon & Tomer Dayan from Portugal and they’ve released quite a few tracks on compilations so far… They kick things in gear with a tribally inspired rhythm-section accompanied by razor-sharp synths and playful little melodic pads… A very joyous combination - and ‘joyous’ as an adjective pretty much sums up the feeling of this track… Good, but not amazing… #05: Sunseek – Jet Lag [140 BPM] Sunseek is Miki Ocheri – an upcoming producer from Israel… And damn, what talent this guy possesses… The promotional info describes this as ‘a mixture between psytrance and progressive’ and yes, the cross-over appeal is huge! We get the steady, driving, melodic forces from psytrance – combined with the rich, groovy phatness of progressive trance… Awesome combo! The break-down is no less than amazing – I dare anyone not to move to this! Flawless track! #06: Cubica – Red Out [135 BPM] Cubica is Mikkel Calum from Denmark… I remember his brilliant debut EP + live show back in 2001 when he was signed to Ayahuasca Records… Also he’s one half of Frogacult who’ve released quite a few progressive stompers + the debut album Something for Sundays on Iboga last year… Anyway, this track is more stripped down than its predecessors – blunt, cold beats and an almost minimal atmosphere… The track itself is ok, but it seems oddly out of place here… AND the 40 seconds of silence before the next track doesn’t do anything to improve the flow either… Wtf!? #07: Aerospace – Scatter [136 BPM] Aerospace is the progressive outfit of GuyShanti from EvilDrugLords… The scatting intro is fun, but the rest of the track doesn’t really do much for me… It’s simple, laidback progressive trance – but unfortunately not much happens… Decent track! #08: Pixel vs. Ran Shani – Disco Nection [134 BPM] Pixel is Eli Biton and he released his debut full-on album Reality Strikes Back on HOM-Mega in 2004… This track was also on that album, but it’s notably different from the other tracks… He’s joined here by Ran Shani on a hybrid choon somewhere in border country between progressive, electro and full-on… I really like the cut-up Shpongle-like voice samples and the overall playful electro bits here… A hybrid track – and a good hybrid track! #09: Zen Mechanics – Ground Control [136 BPM] Ahh, ZM is Wouter Thomassen from The Netherlands… I really liked his spacey chill track on last year’s Aleph Zero compilation Natural Born Chillers… This is his first venture into progressive trance though – and let’s hopes he keeps it up… This is good! I dig the slow, lazy beats and the well-programmed percussion… I definitely recognize his chill-background, as this track is soaked in atmospheric world-music influences… The vocals are awesome here - rumours have it that it’s Bowie!? Brilliant track to finish of a brilliant compilation! Another fine Iboga compilation here… Not the best I’ve heard this year, but its high quality nonetheless… There are a handful of very nice tracks here – unfortunately the flow is kinda lost for a couple of tracks halfway through – and the 40 seconds pause is really weird!? But generally this is good, high quality progressive trance – with hints of psy, electro and world music tossed generally around here and there… Nice! Iboga fans will not be disappointed – neither will fans of cross-over progressive trance… It will come in handy both as a DJ tool and for home-listening… Check out this compilation if you haven’t already… It’s well worth it! Enjoy! Favourites: 1(!), 3, 5(!!), 8, 9(!) 11. V/A – Mushy Mystery Artist: Various Title: Mush Mystery Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Trishula Records (Germany) Cat. #: TRISHCD003 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 7 March 2005 Track listing: 01. 01’24” Megalopsy - Intro 02. 08’53” Mubali – Shake Lasta 03. 07’28” Dejan & Shenz – Heu2 04. 06’12” Dronebixie – Zo Moth 05. 07’31” Derango – Implosions (Final) 06. 08’07” Kemic-Al – Xifajk (Little Devil) 07. 07’56” Derango – Mushy Mystery 08. 09’21” Savage Scream – Freakshow (Evilcore Edit) 09. 07’05” Psyfactor – Spawn Of Satan 10. 07’05” Darkpsy – Elastik Darkness (2nd Version) 11. 05’41” Megalopsy - Outro Review: Night crawlers… Trishula Records from Germany headed by Rudra is out with their 3rd instalment… I thoroughly enjoyed the debut compilation Ignis Fatuus and the deeply original debut album The Abstract Machine by Megalopsy… Trishula has found its own distinct musical direction in releasing high quality dark, deep Halloween trance – and by the look of the tracklist here, this could be the darkest yet… Let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Megalopsy – Intro Kicking things in gear is the Argentinean trio consisting of Alejandro Santander, Matias Benamo, Nicolas Dibernardo… Trishula recently graced us with their very innovative debut album The Abstract Machine … This intro track here, is way too short for any kinda of review though… #02: Mubali – Shake Lasta Mubali is Greg Farley from the US and he had a track on the darkpsy compilation Lhiannon Sidhe – and he’s releasing his debut album on Trishula soon… This is my first encounter with his music though… The rules are laid down right from the intro – this is going to be deep, dark and disturbing… Gritty, noisy industrial soundscapes makes out the base of this track, whilst a dark, repetitive, blunt bassline takes care of the rest… Added to the mix is a bunch of twirling acid-lines causing havoc ~ and the occasional headache I’m sure… This track is very focussed – and driving, but there seems to be lacking something vital to really lift it from its bottomless pit of despair… The last couple of minutes are clearly the best when the track seems to finally find its focus… Ok track! #03: Dejan & Shenz – Heu2 “After I'm gone, your earth will be free to live out its miserable span of existence... As one of my satellites! And that's how it's going to be!” Dejan is Dejan Mihailovic has had a few tracks released on Nabi Records. Shenz is Pin Cyril, and I’ve not heard any of his stuff before… Anyway, these two Frenchmen continue in the same vein as before… This is ultra-dark hyper-trance for the darkest hours of the night… This sounds less gritty though and much more psychedelic… The vast amount of flaring acid-squelches is right up my alley, and generally this track is twisted enough to keep me interested… Also the atmosphere in this track is very atmospheric – haunting really! I also dig the many twists here – one minute it’s totally stripped down to the bone – almost minimal… The next minute it’s full-blown evil psychedelic night-trance… Nice! #04: Dronebixie – Zo Moth Christian Kaas from Denmark impressed me greatly with his horror-track on the first Trishula compilation Ignis Fatuus… This track is equally dark and downright mean! After the initial raw sounds to kick things in motion, the track settles on a dark, twisted path… Scobbah described it as trippy, playful and funky – and that’s a pretty good description… This is something as rare as funky horror-trance! Tasty! #05: Derango – Implosions (Final) “You know I have an idea we have landed in something very sticky and disco!” Derango is two Swedish guys (Jens Eriksson & Ola Eriksson) – I remember their very unique style from both the Schizm compilation released by Gi'iwa Productions and their track on the Ignis Fatuus compilation… Both tracks had a very distinct Swedish forest-mushroom induced sound – highly original, and deeply psychedelic! And so is this track… Jimini Cricket – this is the shiznitz! Awesome track! #06: Kemic-Al – Xifajk (Little Devil) It’s no secret that I was absolutely blown away by Kemic-Al’s debut album Twisted Parameters released on Butterfly Records in January 2005… Aldo from Malta portrayed some amazing skills on that album, so obviously I’m excited about this track too… This is a darkish track, with a blunt, repetitive beat… Kinda stripped really – reminiscent of the first couple of tracks from the debut album… Although it’s extremely dark, the psychedelia is still running thick in this track – and that’s rare with dark psy I think… Very trippy track! #07: Derango – Mushy Mystery The title track is the second appearance by the Swedish duo consisting of Jens Eriksson & Ola Eriksson… The first track was awesome, and this is almost as good… Again it’s highly unstructured, complex, multilayered stuff… The atmosphere is super-trippy and haunting at times... This is Finnish vodka – spiked with Swedish mushrooms… And the outcome is deeply demented and highly psychedelic! Kick-ass! #08: Savage Scream – Freakshow (Evilcore Edit) Fasten your seatbelts! Savage Scream is Mizuki Nishihata from Japan… Besides this track, he also had a bunch of tracks on the Nabi compilation Run Motherfucker, Run… This is an insanely fast track [158 BPM] ~ approaching the not-fun-anymore factor… But despite the galloping bassline, Mizuki still has enough sense to add some twisted, trippy FX into the mix which helps a little… But this track is still a little too fast for my liking… And frankly, I don’t really find it as evil as the title suggests… Decent track! #09: Psyfactor – Spawn Of Satan Psyfactor is Dimitri Korablin from Russia – where else? Russia has a long tradition for extremely dark, demented psytrance and they were among the innovators of this sub-genre… I liked the demonic track Dimitri had on Ignis Fatuus and this is qually good. As the title suggest, this is spooky, nightmare trance best enjoyed in deep, dark dungeons… The intro is subtle and eerie, and the bassline truly sounds like something Beelzebub conjured himself… This is right up there with Xenomorph – wikkid evil stuff! #10: Darkpsy – Elastik Darkness (2nd Version) The last full length track here is by Darkpsy (Jonathan Molinari) from Portugal… Again it’s ultra-dark as the name implies and there is an overall bubbling, dark groove present here which I really enjoy… It’s dark and pumping, but still very vibrant and psychedelic with floating, atmospheric pads… A nice combo for sure! Sweet track! #11: Megalopsy – Outro The gauchos Alejandro, Matias and Nicolas are back for the outro track... This is experimental downtempo stuff – kinda like the transition parts of the album The Abstract Machine… It’s pretty creepy, but still nice for chilling out a little after this intense listening experience… ;o) Trishula has done it again… Released another high-quality gem in the deep, dark demented hyper-trance category… This is even darker than Ignis Fatuus and the Megalopsy album – to be played during the darkest hours of the night… It’s raw, sick, evil, twisted night-trance – definitely not for the fainthearted… It requires decent audio set-up and is designed to scare friends, lovers and family… If you don’t want to scare people off, I recommend listening to this in headphones for an enhanced listening experience… There are loads of very cool tracks here – more than enough to validate a purchase! I will not hesitate to recommend this compilation to fans of hard-hitting, nocturnal, dark psytrance… But beware – there is some evil stuff on here… Eeeeeeeevil! Full-on buffs and proggers should avoid this at all costs, but horror-freaks and other deviants will appreciate this immensely! Enjoy! Favourites: 3, 4, 5(!!), 6, 7, 9, 10(!) 18. Yes, there was a pre-released version without proper mastering... You should get a hold of the retail version... It's totally worth it! DP
  19. I didn't particulary like his Nyquist track on Wireless... A little too introvert and dark for my tastes... As far as I know, RofM is the same on Puzzled and S.A. ... Antix did a remix of it on the Puzzled compilation.. The 1997 album on Substance is not Aran Gallagher, but rather composed by one Sean Deason... Aran did release his debut album in 1997 though - released on +Ion and called Alloys ... Anyone heard this one? DP
  20. Sweet compilation there pr0... You've given this some thought - nice! I absolutely love FREq, but my knowledge of his music is limited to the stuff I actually own physically + a couple of tracks I've heard @ parties... So my compilation would look something like this... (Flow is prolly way off BPM-wise, but who cares - it's my compilation!) FREq - Incense Tree [Permutations - Zenon Records 2004] FREq - I've Been Sent [irresistible Meltdown Vol. 3 - Plusquam 2004] FREq – Dreambody (Progressive Mix) [strange Attractors - Iboga 2004] FREq – Nurbs [strange Attractors - Iboga 2004] FREq – The Dreaming [OV Silence Chapter Three - OV Silence 2004] FREq – Strange Attractor [strange Attractors - Iboga 2004] Sensifeel - Back To The Future (FREq Rmx) [Vision Of Live - Domo Records 2004] FREq vs. Spherical vs. Fractal Glider - DFF [A Day After... - ZMA 2004] FREq – SHM (Melodic Mix) [Magnetic Storm - Groove Zone 2005] Argh, I still have loads of stuff to add to my FREq collection... If only I was made of money... DeathPosture
  21. The beer is one... Sentence construction is another - along with word-construction like singel + an obvious Swedish word as alla... The inclusion of Swedish artists Richi M and Earthbound was the icing on the cake! You were definitely Swedish! DP
  22. V/A – In Crypto High-res: front + back Artist: Various Title: In Crypto Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Ketuh Records (Portugal/Austria) Cat. #: KTHCD008 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 11 April 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’06” Gappeq – Theory Of Everything 02. 09’05” Zebra-N – Almost Lost It 03. 08’35” The Farting Parrot – iNTeLLecTual RecTuM 04. 05’59” Insect Seeker – Russian Sounds 05. 08’23” Double R.E.L. – Viva La Wav 06. 07’03” Hefty Output – Ghb Rmx 07. 08’28” Pondscum – Output 1-2 Rmx 08. 07’27” Paranoize – Fucking Evil Noise 09. 07’28” Killer Buds – Everything Is A Copy .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/c4lcf (all tracks) Review: Ohoy motherfucker! Ketuh Records is an equally productive as well as ambitious label… Label boss P_Mac is on a never-ending quest; scouring the world to procure the finest psy-trance to the huddled masses… And Ketuh sure has brought me many wonderful moments with their compilations of a consistent high quality… In Crypto is the 8th release and as usual the tracklist is a combination of new exciting acts + the usual suspects… Let’s take a stroll down Ketuh Straße… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Gappeq – Theory Of Everything As tradition prescribes it, Gappeq from The Czech Republic opens this compilation… This is the fourth consecutive Ketuh compilation that Mr. Jirka opens… And why change a winning formula? As usual Gappeq crosses borders with his stuff – this is highly experimental… Full-power psychedelic trance with worldly influences from both Funland, Australia and Alderaan… Twisted, psychedelic morning trance with a cornucopia of FX… It’s very complex and perhaps even a little too complex for my tastes… #02: Zebra-N – Almost Lost It Zebra-N is Dutch producer Paul Elferich and this is his second time on a Ketuh compilation… I remember his tracks as often having a comic/oddball approach to psytrance… And this track is no different… The first half is very dark, haunting night-trance… ‘Darkpsy’ if you will – but wait until after the break when Elferich wants to have a little fun… Cardiac arrest beeps followed by the most manic climax… This *will* freak people out on the dance floors! Funny track! #03: The Farting Parrot – iNTeLLecTual RecTuM Intellectual breach – my ass! The bird breaking wind is Ariel Sela from Israel – one half of Double R.E.L…. And holy phuck – this is a crazy track indeed… Incredibly fast, it’s a no-questions-asked powerhouse of a raging night-time psytrain… Relentlessly vicious, this is like a melodic version of a Finnish crackpot tune – with Israeli melody structure and German bass… Add tons and tons of trippy FX and we’re getting close to the sound of this demented choon… Blimey! Quality stuff! #04: Insect Seeker – Russian Sounds “Gentlemen – welcome to fight club!” Insect Seeker is the side project of Tarcisio & Marcelo from Killer Buds – and it looks like these Brazilians are turning their focus to Russian now… Well, for this tune at least… And yes, this tune is aptly named – this is indeed vodka trance… Deep, dark and pounding with flaring, ripping acid riffs chain-sawing their way through your ears… Intense use of electro-metallic sounds and long, dark pads help create a truly evil track… Sweet! #05: Double R.E.L. – Viva La Wav Now Ariel Sela is joined by fellow Israeli Ariel Ram – as Double R.E.L. they’ve released a handful of tracks on Doof Records… And goddam, this is some sick, repulsive shit – and I mean that in the best possible way… This is immensely dark, haunting Halloween trance designed to scare the living shit outta friends, family, neighbours and kids… This is a Boshke tune on amphetamines… Yikes! #06: Hefty Output – GHB Rmx “And now for the party drug ‘causing so much concern around Australia. It’s illegal, it’s cheap and one of its nicknames gives you a clue to how dangerous it can be. It’s been called grievous bodily harm. The drug is also known as GHB…” Hefty Output is an Australian duo with members Dan Verbi & Tim Hanlon… This is their debut, and DAMN what a debut! I dunno if the Australian water supply is spiked with GHB or what’s going on, but OZ sure has produced some immensely talented artists… I’m reminded of some of one my fav’e OZ acts: Scatterbrain and Xatrik… This track is similar to their sound - not so much musically but in creativity and structure… This is a deeply original, sinister, frenzied night-time track – riddled with psychedelic elements, voice samples and the meanest koala-bassline I’ve ever heard… Pure acid noise-attack – beautifully executed! Amazing debut – amazing track! #07: Pondscum – Output 1-2 Rmx And here’s another debutant from down under… Luke Danielewski is his name, and he’s been drinking GHB too… As with the previous two tracks this is extremely deep and murky – haunting, depraved horror-trance… Requires some serious audio hardware to get the full spectre across… Eat your heart out Xenomorph – this is malicious, but surprisingly psychedelic! I’m all for darkpsy – but this is borderline stuff – getting almost too dark for my taste… Almost! #08: Paranoize – Fucking Evil Noise “Ohoy motherfucker!” Paranoize is Alex Ladyzanskyi from Israel… This aptly named track continues in the same vein as its predecessors – again its very dark, spooky dungeon-trance for the darkest hours of the night… A pounding cyclic bassline accompanied by eerie pads and twirling acid-lines… And a climax designed to make you wet yourself! I’m really struggling to find superlatives here, but this is such a fucking huge track – nightmarish, spooky and deeply hypnotizing… Definitely not for the faint hearted… Brilliant track! #09: Killer Buds – Everything Is A Copy “I look around this room and I see a lot of courage. That gives me strength. We give each other strength. This is it – ground zero![…] Everything is far away. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy… When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything: the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks! […] That’s the good news – I no longer have any fear of death. I am in a pretty lonely place…” Enzio, Tarcisio & Marcelo from Brazil are Ketuh regulars, and have their debut album Interfiber Skunk coming out as KTHCD009. I really like their relentless style, so naturally I’m looking forward to that album with huge expectations… This track is a tad lighter than the previous super-dark tracks – but make no mistake about it, this is still very, very psychedelic… Fast, pounding, darkish morning trance – with loads and loads of trippy elements sprinkled around to enhance your trip… Though most of the Fight Club samples have been used in psy-tracks before, they really fit this stellar track… Sweet way to end this compilation indeed! Yikes! I’ve noticed a slow, but steady increase in the quality of the stuff Ketuh release… And with a label as productive as this, the message comes across even stronger – indeed a promising sign for the future… This without a doubt the darkest Ketuh release thus far – and especially tracks #4 through #8 are among the hardest I’ve heard in a while… Dark psy taken to the extremes! As mentioned above, the quality level is impressive here – hats off to P_Mac for his continuous effort to find the freshest, darkest gut-hitting music on the planet… The next seven (7!) releases are already brewing in the Ketuh kitchen… Yummy! ;o) I dig this compilation – but I have to be in a certain mood to listen to this kinda music… It’s dark – it’s very dark! But within the darkpsy genre this is essential, and I do not hesitate to recommend this to hardened fans of such labels as Ketuh (well, duh!), Parvati, Trishula, Stoneage and the likes… You will not be disappointed!
