V/A – Cyberdelica Artist: Various Title: Cyberdelica Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Trancelucent Productions (Israel) Cat. #: TPCD 010 Distribution: Boa Distribution Date: 26 October 2004 Track listing: 01. 08’40” Noga – Inteligent Species 02. 07’19” Bizzare Contact vs. Dooper Doopler - Hallucinating 03. 07’21” Aquatica – The Access Code 04. 07’31” Electro Sun - Vanilla 05. 07’24” System Nipple - Radiance 06. 05’53” The Misted Muppet – Night Wish 07. 07’44” Uriel - Discobles 08. 07’03” Pardigma – Isolated 09. 07’12” Visual Paradox vs. Bizzare Contact – Tarim Taof Review: Fluff fest! This is the 10th release by Israeli label Trancelucent Production – a compilation cooked up by label boss Homsy… Trancelucent release albums and compilations in a steady flow, and I’m sure we all know their biggest smash: the hit album From The Legend by The Misted Muppets… That album is still among my fav’e released in 2004… Before that, the label released the little proggy gem Touch Ups by Etic – also an album I thoroughly enjoyed, though it was in a style not usually associated with Trancelucent… Anyway, here’s the latest compilation, and truth be, that by looking at the tracklist my eyes cannot seem to stray from that enchanted name: The Misted Muppets… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Noga – Inteligent Species [143 bpm] Noga Sudai kicks things off with an alternative way of spelling the word ‘intelligent’. I’ve been pretty impressed with the two Noga-tracks I’ve heard so far – especially his track on the Magma Records compilation Speed Of Light, and sure enough, this track is pretty good… It’s definitely Israeli neo full on, though with hints of proggy elements… Well produced, but not ground-breaking in any sense… I do however like the floating, stabbing sound in the latter half of the tune – in fact, the last two minutes are by far the best… Ok track! #02: Bizzare Contact vs. Dooper Doopler – Hallucinating [144 bpm] And here’s the first of two collaborations with Bizzare Contact… DD I only know from the track on ZMA’s Monarchie IV, and I wasn’t practically impressed with that… Very cool intro though, with coughing noises and harmonic bliss… After a while a distorted sound is introduced leading up to some twirling little melodies... More coughing, radio static and naïve melodies over a pretty standard Israeli bassline… After the 3’30 mark, the track takes an interesting turn, unleashing a palette of full blown, full-on dancefloor fodder… Yeah, nice track with the coughing as a funny touch… #03: Aquatica – The Access Code [145 bpm] Aquatica I remember from the Gemstones: Amber compilation released on Maia Records earlier this year – that tune had very fluffy melodies accompanied by some bad-ass basslines and darkish percussion… And this track pretty much follows that formula, though the melodies here are hardly as fluffy… This has a harder edge, and I’m all about hard edges… Ripping! So yeah, best track so far! #04: Electro Sun – Vanilla [145 bpm] “Everything you've ever said, done or thought about doin', is right there in that file cabinet” Young producer Nadav Alkayam has his debut album coming out soon, and here he starts his track with a Morgan Freeman sample from the movie Bruce Almighty… The track itself is dancefloor friendly full-on with a slightly harder approach… Guitars go hand in hand with tight percussion work here – and create a nice little track… #05: System Nipple – Radiance [145 bpm] Again, I use the Gemstones: Amber compilation as a reference… System Nipple was involved in a very nice track on that compilation, so I’m hoping this will be just as good… And yeah, these guys sure know their way around a nice melody… This is 100% morning trance with all the uplifting elements you can think of... This track has epic-like qualities – very well-polished indeed! #06: The Misted Muppet – Night Wish [149 bpm] And now for the track I’ve been waiting the most for… The first new track from those evil horror muppets since their no less that magical album From The Legend released earlier this year on Trancelucent Productions… Man, that album was brand spanking magnificent, and I’m happy to say that this track continues in the same wonderful vein… The hard-hitting, medieval, spooky, trance inducing style we know from the album… A hands down perfect track! Way to go muppets! #07: Uriel – Discobles [145 bpm] Here’s Uriel Ginzberg with a pretty darkish track… Darkish compared to some of the fluffier predecessors at least… Nice incorporation of weird FX and strange voice samples… This track changes direction constantly and certainly has some interesting ideas, but I’m not to happy with the euro-trance like discoboles-samples… Ok track! #08: Pardigma – Isolated [145 bpm] “You didn’t think it was going to be that easy did you?” Pardigma is the musical alter ego of Toni Levi & Rafi Muader and this is my first encounter with their music… The good things about this track are the nice electronic percussion, the Kill Bill: Vol 1 sample and the cool electro-like synth action going on… But that’s about it… Decent track! #09: Visual Paradox vs. Bizzare Contact – Tarim Taof [143 bpm] Again a Bizzare Contact collaboration – this time with Visual Paradox… This track is actually not bad at all… Starts with a familiar space shuttle lift-off voice sample accompanied by a sort of build-up… The style is full-on Israeli morning trance with evident electro influences… It’s done in a stylish way though… Subtle, floating melodic pads + digital drops and fluffy crackling sounds… Nice track! Right… I never quite know what to say when I review these neo full-on compilations… There is no doubt in my mind, that this kind of music has a large fan base around the world, and heck, I even find myself enjoying bits and pieces of most of the tracks here… But besides the Muppets track, there are no essential tracks here – much of this stuff is just too fluffy for my taste… I’m not too impressed with the cover-art either – and the spelling errors on the cover could’ve easily been avoided by an extra proof-reading before going into press… But rest assured, I’m not saying this is bad. Most of the stuff is well-produced and basically does what it’s supposed to: Entertain the listener. And yeah, I guess you already know what you’re getting into, when you put on a neo full-on release nowadays… So this will definitely please the fans of lighter, modern, uplifting Israeli full-on – others will sound the cheddar alarm. Luckily tastes differ – and for that, I’m grateful! =D Favourites: 3, 6(!!!), 9 DeathPosture External links: Trancelucent Productions: http://www.trancelucent.com Psyshop: http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/trl/trl1cd010.html (Audio samples available!) V/A - Peacemaker Artist: Various Title: Peacemaker Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Ketuh Records (Portugal/Austria) Cat. #: KTHCD006 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 22 November 2004 Track listing: 01. 08’21” Gappeq – Birth of the Dragon 02. 07’21” Zebra-N – Mad Cow Disaster 03. 07’30” Shift – Nexus Overload 04. 07’45” Phyx – Ruby Blaze V.2. 05. 07’53” Killer Buds – Night Vision 06. 06’45” Insect Seeker - Bicicleta 07. 07’19” Tryambaka - Odyssey 08. 07’56” Spectra a.k.a. Shrink – Radio Telescope 09. 09’47” Cell – Scanner Constructions Review: Satisfaction in recognition… After the hard-hitting and hard-selling compilations Suspended Reality and Sonic Pantomime, here’s the third compilation this year by the very productive label Ketuh Records. As usual P_Mac did the hard work of compiling this – a compilation of what he calls a carefully balanced cross of two genetic strands: a hybrid of night & morning trance… Right, let’s check that out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Gappeq – Birth of the Dragon “I had a dream. I saw-- You saw a dragon being born. It was amazing; life was exploding all around… So it should, you see when dragons are born they bring new magic with them. Magic is the life force of our world. It keeps nature and everything around us in balance!” First up is Mr. Jirka from the Czech Republic with a quote from the Dungeons & Dragons movie… He also had a track featured on the last Ketuh compilation which was pretty good… This track is even on the lighter side of night trance – or on the harder side of morning trance… A hybrid really – melodic and dark at the same time… I like the many changes in direction throughout this track… Not bad at all… #02: Zebra-N – Mad Cow Disaster Then we have Paul Elfferich from The Netherlands who also had a track on Doof Record’s second Electric Shock Treatment… He brings a raw and gritty sound here – the bassline is quite funky in a scary kind of way… And wait until you hear the weird, haunting synths and wicked metallic chainsaw… An overall very spooky atmosphere is created here… I like the little break in the middle that just intensifies the horror… If all that stuff hasn’t freaked you out yet - the mad cow will… I dub this ‘the scary moo track’. #03: Shift – Nexus Overload Shift is South African Chris Hoy, and my last encounter with him, was his supposed chill track on the Digital Psionics compilation Psionic Earth… But he’s not chilling here, as he’s not in most of his tracks… This is a raging acid-stomper in the good old sense… Spiralling synths, twirling acid-lines, crisp percussion and 4/4 bassline in full FX… Hoy puts forth an impressive outburst of energy and this track is massive sound wise… Not hugely original, but massive nevertheless! #04: Phyx – Ruby Blaze V.2. Phyx Phyx Phyx – and more Phyx! Ian Summs from South Africa seems to be involved in all compilations I’ve reviewed lately… Very productive guy – but as long as he maintains a high level of quality, I’m not complaining… And this sure is Phyx trademark quality material: thick, dark, distorted, acid-driven night-trance… Harsh, gloomy and with hints of gritty, industrial sounds – definitely not for the faint-hearted… Yeah, you know what you get when you put on a Phyx tune… Satisfaction in recognition! ;o) #05: Killer Buds – Night Vision Ketuh regulars Enzio, Tarcisio & Marcelo from Brazil grace our ears with another one of their funny, highly psychedelic tracks… Again it’s satisfaction in recognition, and this track is just as good as their tracks on the last two Ketuh comps… Full-power, stomping, galloping acid trance… Build up’s, breaks & climaxes are wonderful… Gets me every time - I mean, just check out the one @ 2’50 and the one after that… And… Brilliant! #06: Insect Seeker – Bicicleta And now – more buds… Insect Seeker is the side project of Tarcisio & Marcelo from Killer Buds… Yeah, the family tie is quite audible on this track… After a ‘lengthy’ intro part and some downright bizarre retro Speedy Gonzales sounds, the madness is finally allowed to rear its ugly head after 3 minutes or so… Hard-hitting & acid-ripping… Relentless & brutal … Crazy & entertaining… Brazil vs. Funland in the psychedelic Olympics… And Brazil is winning this one! Nice track, though the mastering seem to be lacking a bit (or is it just my copy?)… #07: Tryambaka – Odyssey “Kick him in the nads Beavis!” Tryambaka is Tiago Pimentel is a young, rising talent from Portugal… He’s obviously a Beavis & Butthead fan ‘cause this track is riddled with B&B samples… He seems to have picked up quite a few dirty tricks from his idols, and most of the time he does pretty well on this fast-paced, humorous night track… I like how the track all of a sudden turns into Hanson’s Mmmbop… Nice spoof for sure… ;o) Unfortunately this is the weakest track on the compilation and it seems this young padawan still has something to learn on structure and composition… It’s not a bad track per se; it’s just pales compared to some of the others… #08: Spectra a.k.a. Shrink – Radio Telescope Paulo & Oliviera are also Ketuh regulars and I also liked their stuff on the previous compilations… I should really stop sounding like a broken record…Ahem… This tune is less gritty than most of its predecessors, but it still has those ever-present Ketuh ingredients… Dark dancefloor-friendly melodies, evil basslines and rapid changes in pace and style… The first part of the track is nice and all, but I cannot shake the feeling of stand-still and parts of it seem just a little too well-polished and hollow for my part… But luckily the track is saved by the latter part… I really, really like the big epic wow-part @ 5’50 and onwards… Damn, that must sound amazing on a big-ass sound system… Creamy! #09: Cell – Scanner Constructions And finally… Cell!? Did you see that one coming? This is none other than famous French chill-out artist Alexander Scheffer… So yeah, this is upbeat ambient… Psychedelic ambient with a couple of beats thrown in – Ketuh style… Complete with flute, digital drops, electronic farts and an overall dubby atmosphere… Great for coming down of the trip… ;o) Another Ketuh compilation comes to a halt… I have to give P_Mac and the rest of the Ketuh crew credit for being so productive and visionary… They are on a trance-mission of putting out high-quality trance music, and the schedule is planned down in every detail well into 2005 – with no less than 7 upcoming releases… Dance floor fodder in a steady stream in the time to come… Next one is A Little Lunacy due January 2004 …Sweet! I dunno about this compilation being a morning/night hybrid though – it’s mostly night… But night trance done in the typical, well-know style that I’ve come to appreciate a great deal… This is the third Ketuh compilation I review over a period of 4 months – and besides a couple of mediocre tracks here and there, they have not let me down… The flow here is slightly better than Sonic Pantomime and with only a couple of minor glitches; this is a very nice compilation… I mean – wicked tracks by Gappeq, Zebra-N, Phyx and Killers Buds. Guaranteed to satisfy fans of darkish, twisted night trance with ripping acid lines and dance floor friendly mayhem… Enjoy! Indeed it is a great compilation... I'm glad to see that it's getting some praise - it deserves it... My full-lengh review can be found right here ... And more talk about it right here ... All I can tell you about Zooboreal is that it's some guy called Adde... But if you own the CD you prolly already knew that? DeathPosture

There are only 7 tracks on The Mystery of the Thirteen Crystal Skulls... On The Secret of the Thirteen Crystal Skulls there is a "hidden track" though... It's not an extra track though - it's just hidden after track #7 - after approximately 45 seconds of silence and starts @ 13,45 and it's a computerized voice talking about the crystal skulls: The mystery of the crystal skulls continues. Each of the skulls has special powers and they are used in magical rituals, in healings, in clairvoyance and in other paranormal activities. Some believe they can even be used as a door for contact with the other side where no man can normally go. The skulls can be used also as shamanic tools to unlock the secrets of the past, the present and the future. There is no music whatsoever during this little speech, so I'm not sure wheter or not it's the one you're referring to... DeathPosture

V/A – Peaking In Tongues Artist: Various Title: Peaking In Tongues Format: CD Label: Peak Records (Switzerland) Cat. #: PEAKCD004 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 6 December 2004 Track listing: 01. 02’18” The Peaking Goddess Collective - Alliteration (intro) 02. 08’06” Yab-Yum - Biochemical Possibilities (145bpm) 03. 08’32” Digital Talk + Seb - Re-Union (145bpm) 04. 07’46” N3xu5 - Ladykiller (148bpm) 05. 06’26” Drumatik - Show Time (146bpm) 06. 07’57” Phyx - Black Magic (145bpm) 07. 08’25” Electrypnose - Rip (147bpm) 08. 06’55” Mechanix - Interesant (146bpm) 09. 08’09” N3xu5 - Master Of Disguise (rmx) (147bpm) 10. 03’57” Master Margherita & Pearce feat. Dymons - Flowmotion (outro) Review: Neo psybersonic tonics dug fresh from the tryptamines of the sublime! Third release from Swiss label Peak Records – a collective of mad hatters from Lusanne lead by DJ Gaspard… He also compiled and mixed this… With some very interesting names on the tracklist and mastering by Chromatone from San Fransisco, the basis for some dark, twisted psytrance should be laid down… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: The Peaking Goddess Collective - Alliteration (Intro) As custom on all Peak compilations, the collective of artists do the intro and outro… This is a very nice idea – to get you in the mood for a pleasant listening experience… This little ambient piece bear very little resemblance to what’s about to come, but that’s besides the point…This reminds me of old TIP ambient with Current93-like vocals… Very cool retro-spiritual intro indeed! #02: Yab-Yum - Biochemical Possibilities “Do you know what scares me the most? It’s when it happens. When it comes over me. When I totally loose control. I like it!” Yab-Yum is Gaspard & Ajja S.F.Leu = Peaking Goddess co-managers… And they sure know how to manage the art of composing a nice track… This is fast-paced deeply twisted night-time trance… Ajja used to play rock guitar, and he sure haven’t forgotten about his old skills… We get some of his guitar-action here alongside little twirling acid lines and twisted, yet harmonic psy-trance madness… Cool voice samples and cleverly used stereo-FX… Overall a kick-ass track! #03: Digital Talk + Seb - Re-Union Julien from DT (of former Droidsect fame) re-unites with Seb on this track that starts out with some tribal drums… Soon however, sharp metallic sounds are introduced… Digital farts and electronic hiccups… As on the Digital Talk album New Age Surf released earlier this year on Acidance, this is Halloween trance… I like the way a dark murky and quite spooky atmosphere is created… Reminds me of older Xenomorph – and that stuff have always scared the living shit out of me… Nice! #04: N3xu5 – Ladykiller Ahh – another N3xu5 track… Mr. Lopez from Portugal has yet to let me down… Everything I’ve heard from him was excellent… This track starts out with the initial parts of the famous O-Ren Ishii speak from Kill Bill vol. 1: “As your leader, I encourage you from time to time, and always in a respectful manner, to question my logic. If you're unconvinced that a particular plan of action I've decided is the wisest, tell me so, but allow me to convince you and I promise you right here and now, no subject will ever be taboo. Except, of course, the subject that was just under discussion.” And then a rapid bassline in unleashed… Followed by digital drops and sweet, sweet acid-lines that will severely damage your ear-drums if you’re not careful… And then more O-Ren: “The price you pay for bringing up either my Chinese or American heritage as a negative is - I collect your fucking head. Just like this fucker here. Now, if any of you sons of bitches got anything else to say, now's the fucking time!!” And then all hell brakes loose and goose bumps will appear. ’Nuff said – N3xu5 have done it again! Brilliant! #05: Drumatik - Show Time “You’re listening to Radio Cosmos!” Drumatik is a young guy from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and he had two tracks on the Peak-A-Boo compilation also released on Peak Records. I’ve never heard any of his stuff though… The intro to this track is super-nice… Very organic and moody… Then a few R2D2 samples and a pretty standard bassline… And all of a sudden Radio Cosmos take over the airwaves – and Boney M’s Brown Girl In The Ring is playing surrounded by horror-samples and Tiesto-like soundscapes… And after that more movie-quotes and acid-lines… Oh my – I’m totally blown away by this bombardment on my senses…Beware – do not listen to this while on shrooms… It’ll mess with you and it might get ugly! Very, very impressive track by Drumatik here – the only flaw I can find is the bassline that’s just too standard at times – but that doesn’t ruin this track… Far from it! An artist to look out for! #06: Phyx - Black Magic South African Phyx (Ian Summs) has been very productive on various compilations this year with his trademark ripping acid sounds, and basically I’ve been impressed by his work so far. Phyx has a weakness for incorporating annoying, high-pitched sounds into his tracks – and as usual you’ll either love it or hate it… This one is pretty cool and not as bizarre as some of his previous work… As legend has it, this track builds and builds, has a fast-paced hard-core bassline and is riddled with ripping acid-lines… It sure gets my ass wiggling… #07: Electrypnose – Rip Electrypnose is Swiss artist-slash-mountain man Vin’s Le Barde and he’s been with the collective for some time and had a track on the first compilation Peaking Goddess… It’s my first encounter with his work though… This is aptly named track is indeed ripping… If this is made to tell a story about the Swiss Alps, I now see them as icy, bitterly cold, eerie and dark… Just like this track! Nice, atmospheric, dark track… The competition is fierce on this compilation – and this track is “just” good! ;o) #08: Mechanix – Interesant Mechanix is Eldad Ben-Ezry from Israel and he released an album on Doof Records in 2003. The only track I’ve heard by him though was the collaboration he had with Time Lock on ZMA’s Monarchie IV… That was dark night trance, and sure enough – this is dark night trance! A pounding rubber bass, distorted industrial sounds and some wicked synth action… Combine that with twisted saiko-FX, a pinch of acid, some tribal percussion, scatter some undecipherable voice samples and some reverb action and you’ve got yourself a dance floor bombshell! Funky as hell! #09: N3xu5 - Master of Disguise (Rmx) “Did you just tell me to shut up?” Second track by N3xu5 and he doesn’t waste any time on a boring intro – we launch straight into his acid-ridden world… Again we’re introduced to some mind-altering sounds here… Balancing on the edge of being annoying, but luckily it doesn’t cross the border… This is dark, twisted night trance with ultra-gritty ingredients and funny cartoon voice samples… That climax @ 4’00 – yummy! Thank you Mr. Lopez – it’s like you can read my mind creating tracks like this… Splendid track! #10: Master Margherita & Pearce feat. Dymons - Flowmotion (Outro) Master Margherita (bass) & Pearce (flute) are both members of the Peaking Goddess collective and here they are joined by some dude or dudette called Dymons… After those full-on dance floor napalm tracks it’s time for some chilling – and time to check out how many brain cells you lost playing those tracks at full volume… And what wonderful chilling… Focus is on bass & flute – beautifully executed by MM and P… This is just lovely… Floating, dreamlike, soothing ambient… Nicey nice! I might as well brake down in tears and admit that before listening to this compilation, my knowledge of Swiss based label Peak Records was extremely limited… But that’s about to change, ‘cause this is one hell of a compilation… Seriously there’s not a single bad track here… All tracks are above average and that’s rare with compilations nowadays… Damn, I’m impressed! If you like the latest releases by Parvati Records, Ketuh Records and Digital Psionics you’ll most definitely like this… Luckily we’ve been treated to many great releases featuring this style this year – and this is another very good one… Hell, it’s been a while since I’ve been so impressed by a compilation in this genre – recommended to all fans of the above mentioned styles: Hard-core, deeply twisted, darkish, vicious, mind altering night trance… Start saving up – this will be released December 6th 2004 - Attaboy! Kukan Dub Lagan – Life Is Nice Artist: Kukan Dub Lagan (Israel) Title: Life Is Nice Format: CD (digipack) Label: Candyflip Records (Greece) Cat. #: CFCD 13 Distribution: Arabesque Date: November 2004 Track listing: 01. 06’36” Life Is Nice 02. 06’26” Saiko Dub 03. 07’17” Pink The Floyd 04. 07’25” Roots of Vibration 05. 06’36” Gandhi’s Kick 06. 06’08” Defence Yourself Jha 07. 06’32” Shay-Yes-I 08. 07’24” No Mon Control!!! 09. 06’52” Shinzon Romulan 10. 07’06” The Sounds of the Sword 11. 08’02” The Bells of Burma M3U playlist: http://beta.juno.co.uk/playlists/m3u/160127-01.m3u (all tracks) Review: Chaotic space dub! Kukan Dub Lagan is 28 year old Itay Berger from Israel, and this is his debut album released by Greek label Candyflip Records. This is not your ordinary bunch of psy-trance/psy-chill… No, this is something different… This is psy-dub! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: “How long have you been writing electronica? Ten years! They call it a decade, call it a decade…” This title-track immediately teleports the listener deep into the dub-jungle where all worries are put aside and life is nice… It’s lazy afternoon dub with digital birds, rippling percussion, flute, children’s choir, floating melodies and a very uplifting atmosphere all together… Yeah, life is nice! #02: As the title suggests, this track digs deeper into the more saikodelic side of dub… Heavier and more hectic – as heavy and hectic as leftfield dub can be… Sounds like Itay is playing around with an old school organ and some severely cut-up beats here, though he somehow manages to maintain a joyous vibe throughout the track… #03: Very nice intro on the PF-tribute track here… Organic, eerie and slowly building towards something big… UFO-samples alongside a deeeeeep, dubby bassline… This is very, very soothing music… Very well-produced… Reminds me of Shulman and Asura at times… Brilliant track! #04: Ahh… Another über-cool intro with heavily cut-up voice-samples echoing into oblivion arpeggio-style… Single note synth-action accompanied by lazy percussion, a deep steady bass, guitar and all kinds of percussion, glass-bottle tapping, etc… This track really encapsulated the Kukan Dub Legan sound – and what an impressive sound that is… #05: The Mahatma Dub Session vol. 1: Advanced Fusion. Heavily reverbed synths lines with ska-elements, reggae vibe, deep groovy bassline and the trusted drop of dub as the common denominator… This is musical tapas! Feast your ears on this! #06: And this is very it gets really weird… I think Itay raided the waste bin of a Kingston studio cutting room… But hey, I guess we’re just not used to a raggamuffin MC all of a sudden dropping lyrics in the middle of a psy-dub album… Interesting track, but not really my fav’e blunt on this album… #07: Echoing naïve, one-key synthlines makes out the very long, slightly annoying intro… It gets better when yet another phat bassline and voice-effects are added later on… It gets even better when a faster kick is introduced and the track turns out pretty ok… Not outstanding, but nice nevertheless! #08: Woow – that is one deep bass! Yikes! Steady, controlled pace and very focussed… More FX are added, among them another reggae-emcee and some filtered steeldrum action… Again more Kukan analogue synths opposite little twirling melodies to balance out the deep bassline… A winning combination and guaranteed to leave a big cracking smile on most faces! #09: The intro uses a sample similar to the Independence Day quote in IM’s ‘Release Me’ … Quite scary actually… Anywho – this is among the most psychedelic tracks on the album… And I really like the gloomy atmosphere put forward by Itay here… Stellar track! #10: Another dub-tune focussed on the slightly darker side of things… It’s a clash of organic and synthetic sounds… I like the long character-building pads and the haunting mood this track delivers… Tasty! #11: And I’ll be damned if Itay doesn’t go all Vanessa Williams on us and saves the best for last… Again a glum atmosphere has totally soaked this track – but when it’s done this good no-one is complaining… This is full-scale dubby ambient which just scratches you right were it itches! Life is nice! As stated above, this is not your ordinary bunch of psy-trance… Very far from it actually! But don’t let that discourage you – it’s a very nice album indeed and a great way to expand your musical horizons. It has enough experimentation to appeal to the leftfield crowd – and enough psychedelia to satisfy the twisted downbeat crowd. In other words: this is for open-minded fans of leftfield ambient and cross-over psy-chill dub – and everything in between! Sure - but it's still better to keep this chit-chat in a single thread than start a new one isn't it? Perhaps move this thread to off-topic? DP

Luomuhappo - Pog-o-Matic Pogómen 3000000 Artist: Luomuhappo (Finland) Title: Pog-o-Matic Pogomen 3000000 Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Freakdance Records (Finland) Cat. #: FDCD05 Date: 1 November 2004 Track listing: 01. 09’05” Greatest of Blessings 02. 04’42” Vonka 03. 07’10” Sossumassi Jam 04. 07’41” Dixie Bitch 05. 08’34” Luuloterve 06. 05’57” Linnahomo 07. 04’51” Nainen 08. 06’42” Ghetto-Zen Dub 09. 05’21” Rauhaa Veljet 10. 08’00” Haapaneitty 11. 03’26” Line Out Review: Populäärimusiikkia! Luomuhappo is 23 year old Jere Häkkinen from Funland and this is his second album on Freakdance Records, which he’s also a founding member of… This is the label’s 5th release following the mega-weird album by Puoskari called The Audio Hustler… Luomuhappo roughly translates into ‘organic acid’ and I’m guessing Jere had more than a single zip of grandpa Häkkinen’s cough-medicin when he sat down and composed this… But, before we dig deeper into the music, let me just take a second to talk about the cover art, which is among the coolest I’ve seen in a long time… Designed by Jere himself, this is quite the eye catcher with its rustic appearance, simplistic style and naïve old-school cartoon-approach – I like it! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: “Perhaps you got the taste of madness?” Things kick of in a relaxed pace, but soon it gets faster and faster Bolero-style… And before you know it, it’s full-blown Finn-tango-psy… I really dig this track here – though it’s fast, it’s not fast for the sake of being fast… It’s just fast, ok? Also the guitar-action kicks ass! Kinky, but nice… #02: TV static, breaks, electronic sound forgery, Atari-bleeps, rolling synths, filters, filters and filters… To name but a few of the many elements here… Faster-harder- Luomuhappo! #03: Brace yourself! Fusion jazz mixed with electro-dubby, single note sound-excursions… Scores high on the old what-the-fuck-was-that meter… But hey, it’s an interesting track for sure! #04: On this track, Jere takes after his famous family-name brother Mika Häkkinen ‘cause this track goes faster than a formula 1 car… Ripping acid lines, demented steel drums, darkish soundscapes and plain hardcore mayhem… Check out the cool flute! Sweet! #05: Hard-trancey… Stomping… Organic… Blasting… Hypnotizing …Organ-trance party music! ;o) #06: This is the oddball track of the album – if you can actually talk about oddball tracks with this kind of music… It incorporates the sound of an eerie laughter and uses it for most of the track – pitched up and down and run thru all kinds of filters… The laugh-track so to speak! #07: And now we’ve crossed the border into the ‘other part’ of the album – my fav’e part: The more chilled part… This track is kinda chilled w/naïve melodies alongside breakz and random sauna-gibberish… It’s actually very harmonic, and very nice! #08: Reggae-dub-ska-punk-saiko-grunge! “Most civilized people are out of touch with reality because they confuse the world as it is, with the world as they think about it, talk about it and describe it.” This is the way I prefer to take my Finnish delights – chilled and über-cool! #09: Laidback Finn-dance sauna-beats… In Finland ambient is faster than anywhere in world – or at least when it’s done by members of the Freakdance posse! Would go well hand in hand with Schlabbaduerst ambient… Nuff said – just close your eyes and imagine yourself on an air mattress floating on one of the thousand Finnish lakes… Sheer beauty! #10: Electro-chill-dub with wicked percussion… Though very simple, this is so frikkin’ psychedelic… This kind of stuff kicks the shit out of any popular music from Vittula! #11: Enter hardcore-dub–with-lazy-guitar-territory… Jere is putting the finishing touches on this album with this harmonic little beast… It’s no secret that after my listen, I liked the latter part of this album best… I’ve often had a hard time digesting larger portions of perverted Finnish trance, and some of the faster tracks were a bit too… ehhm …fast, for my taste… But after repeated listens the first part has grown on me, and I’ve almost grown equally fond of both parts of the album… There are some very interesting ideas unfolding here – some of which work better than others, but for the most part it’s very well done… It’s an added bonus that we’re also treated to some tracks here that are a bit more chilled – and they outweigh the 150BPM tracks nicely as a striking contrast… I do like this more than the Puoskari album and I’d recommend this to any open-minded fan of out-of-the-ordinary Finnish vodka-trance! Only 700 copies pressed, so you might not want to wait too long before ordering this… If you’re the kinda pervert into this! ;o) Favourites: 1(!), 3, 4, 8(!!), 9, 10, DeathPosture External links: Freakdance Records: http://www.freakdancerecords.net/ Luomuhappo: http://www.mikseri.net/artistit/?id=16816 Saiko Sounds: http://tinyurl.com/5jvy2 (Audio samples available!) V/A – OV Silence Chapter 3 Artist: Various Title: OV Silence – Chapter 3 Format: CD Label: OV Silence (Germany) Cat. #: OSR004CD Date: November 2004 Track listing: 01. 08’20” Block IV vs. Jo Yummy – Royal Flush 02. 07’08” Audiomatrixx - Keywords 03. 08’43” Neelix – The One 04. 07’25” FREq – The Dreaming 05. 09’09” Xenical - Abstinenz 06. 08’41” 6th Floor – Mental Floss 07. 07’55” Psytrain - Neutron 08. 06’58” Atma & R’Tur – Labyrinth Of Life 09. 06’24” Tomtron & Liesegang – Brasil 10. 07’21” Auralis - Streams Review: Hamburg-based label OV-Silence is out with their third compilation… These tracks have been ready for some time, but for undisclosed technical reasons there was a delay in the release date… But who cares about that now – this progressive trance compilation should be ready to tickle progressive trance nuts any day now… The featured artists here are a mix of well-established acts and quite a few up-and-coming talents… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Block IV vs. Jo Yummy – Royal Flush Block 4 has been around on the German scene for quite a while – and so has Jo Yummy… And now they’ve joined forces on this track, which the promotional text refers to as “a progressive hammer ideal for a Sunday afternoon”… And sure, this is a nice proggy tune with a nice thick groove… And the groove is the best part… The bassline bugs me a little though – it seems ‘too standard’… However, the surrounding stuff is not bad at all… Not immensely original, but nice nevertheless… #02: Audiomatrixx – Keywords “And now we’ll go even deeper” …That’s right… Combine the talent of Magnetrixx + Audiomatic and you have Audiomatrixx… I was pretty impressed with their track on the Uplifter Sessions Vol. 2 compilation released earlier this year on Mental Arts, and this track continues in the same vein… Rich progressive trance with hints of psy… It’s very well-produced and very funky… The female voice samples are fitting and we get some smooth tribal drums too… Nice track! #03: Neelix – The One Nelix is another Mental Arts resident… This track strays just a little off the beaten proggy track, towards morning trance territory… Though still with distinct proggy undertones… But we get melodies here: nice floating, organic synth-lines wrapped up in a big old cheesy groove… Thumbs up for the percussion work which is very impressive… Tasty track! #04: FREq – The Dreaming Ahhh… FREq! ;o) Aran Gallagher’s debut album Strage Attractors released on Iboga was one of the best progressive albums of 2004… So my expectations for this new track were high… And yes, I’m happy to report that FREq delivers once again… I dunno how the hell he does it, but somehow he manages to totally soak this track in big, phat grooviness… Another rich, driving, trademark FREq progressive stomper … Excellent! #05: Xenical – Abstinenz After a raw-slash-gentle intro by newcomer Xenical, we get a hard-hitting bassline surrounded by eerie pads of darkness … I have no idea who’s behind that name, but it’s an interesting track nevertheless… It’s still proggy trance, though with a darker edge this time… Spooky even… This would be a great intro track for a Halloween set… Mesa thinks this is greatsa! #06: 6th Floor – Mental Floss “Sound – the equivalent to a thought…” Mental dental hygiene – now what the hell is that all about? … 6th Floor is another newbie, and this track has a more introvert nature… It’s less accessible, but has its moments nevertheless… Deep and repetitive in nature, but there is the odd little melodic bit every now and again… This track has potential, but it’s like it never really let’s loose… Decent track! #07: Psytrain – Neutron Psytrain is yet another n00b… After some mutterings in German we launch into a melodic piece… This is actually the most melodic track on the album thus far with twirling, fluffy arpeggios and predictable synths… I’m sure this is fine, but I’m not sure what it’s doing on this compilation… It’s simply too fluffy for my taste… #08: Atma & R’Tur – Labyrinth Of Life “It is not my destiny to be a hero!” This is a recently discovered duo from Womania… Atmospheric intro with voice mutterings, crackling doors and other weird stuff… This is a hybrid-tune with both proggy and melodic influences… Nothing special IMO – decent track… #09: Tomtron & Liesegang – Brasil More hybrid trance here… This time from partners in crime Tomtron and Liesegang who’ve worked together on a couple of occasions before… Tomtrom compiled some of the Goa Head compilations and is a well-respected name on the scene… This is well-polished progressive trance – and waaaaay to well-polished for my taste… Dare I say boring? Ooops – I said it… #10: Auralis – Streams Final track is by Auralis who’s an OV-Silence regular… This is kinda an experimental trance track that incorporates house-samples and plays around with twisted bits and pieces… A mixed blend of gritty industrial basslines – and lighter uplifting elements + some sweet percussion… I like the experimentation here – it keeps me interested… Though odd, this is a nice track! Well, this is really a strange selection of tracks… Well not strange as in strange – just strange! I mean – the first five tracks are brilliant – then we get 4 mediocre tracks – and to finish things off another nice track… I could’ve coped with one or two mediocre tracks, but four in a row is just too many… Stuff like that subtracts the rating of this compilation… There are however some very fine tracks here – and fans of well-polished, progressive trance will get a kick out of the first five tracks here… With the FREq track being the best… I’m sure tracks # six through nine also has a fan base – but I’m not too impressed with them… So to conclude – the first half of this compilation rocks – the second doesn’t! Listen before you buy! Favourites: 1, 2, 3, 4(!!), 5, 10 DeathPosture External links: OV Silence: http://www.ov-silence.de/ (Audio samples available!) V/A – After Ten Years Of Japanese Trance Full digipack artwork: http://www.makura-graphics.jp/images/image/works/elf-01.jpg Artist: Various (Japan) Title: After Ten Years Of Japanese Trance Format: CD (digipack) Label: ELF Music (Japan) Cat. #: ELFCD-07 Date: 3 November 2004 Track listing: 01. 08’33” Tri-Force – Interstellar Harmonics 02. 09’21” Hydro Generator - Sunset 03. 08’44” Drap Drop - Poponga 04. 06’52” I.B.I.S. - Reaction 05. 07’49” Elegraffiti – Beneath The Blue 06. 07’53” Theoreme - Ridatsu 07. 07’38” Bug Funk – Cursed Death Rmx 08. 07’48” Phi – Everything Never Can’t Stop Us Dude 09. 08’11” Uni - Adventure Review: 9 lives of the psymurai! Japanese label ELF Music has made quite a mark of themselves in 2004 – first they released the brilliant debut-album by Phi, and now they’re releasing this ambitious compilation to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Japanese psytrance. My first impression when looking at the tracklist was ‘Where the hell are Tsuyoshi Suzuki and Takeichirou Kurosaki?’ … But the stuff those guys produce today, doesn’t really qualify as psy-trance anymore… What we get here is the new breed of Japanese psytrance-producers + a couple of veteran sumo-producers… A snapshot of the scene! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: [144 BPM] Tri-Force – Interstellar Harmonics Sha-A is the guy behind Tri-Force, and he had a track on the first Zen compilation on Déjà vu Records… Interstellar Harmonics is a very harmonic, floating melodic track… Long, atmospheric, drifting pads with epic qualities… Kinda reminds me of the first 3-4 tracks of the 12 Moons album Solid State released earlier this year on Candyflip Records… It would fit right in on an Ibiza-compilation… It’s kinda clubby, though with a distinct psy-trance edge… It’s nice and well-produced, but just a tad too well-polished for my taste…Decent track! #02: [145 BPM] Hydro Generator – Sunset I’ve never heard of Hydro Generator (DJ Toru) before, but he’s a rising star in Japan and his tracks are also featured on the new USTA compilation Zoo-B 3 – Psypolitical… Sunset is also a well-polished, melodic track – though with a slightly harder edge than the previous track… I like the naïve melodies and the twirling little riffs… Great contrast effect… Also, I like how the percussion evolves constantly playing tricks on you…Oh, and how I love a nice melodic climax – and we get a couple of those in this track… Nice! First half of the track is so-so, but the second half lifts it – lovely track! #03: [145 BPM] Drap Drop – Poponga Drap Drop consists of Tsune and DJ E-L5 and again an unknown act to me. I know they had a track released on the Shiva Space Japan compilation Intelligence though… A nice and calm, though kinda weird intro is soon interrupted by a mean ol’ banging bassline… And then, it’s more weirdness… Acid belches, electro farts and digital drama… Combined with analogue synthlines, off-key percussion and a bunch of Nintendo samples… Actually, I’m guessing this is actually kinda normal for Japanese standards… ;o) I do like the galloping acid-parts though – very, very nice! I’m sure this will appeal to fans of both say, Mandalavandalz and Electric Universe… Highly original, though parts of it are approaching the too-weird-for-my-taste factor… Interesting track! #04: [144 BPM] I.B.I.S. – Reaction This guy did some tracks for the Xbox game Project Gotham Racing, and if they are anything like this, they’re pretty good! This is a pretty hardcore track with a nice artificial groove too it… Hard-hitting, industrial sounding FX make up the spine of the track… Digital bassline & percussion and metallic whooshes and spiralling sounds add to the overall darkish feel… It’s dark without being scary – very atmospheric! I like it! #05: [142 BPM] Elegraffiti – Beneath The Blue DJ Ryo & Kameda are both very active in the Japanese scene – party organizing, DJ’ing, sound-wizardry, etc… Here they bring us a tribal tune that has a very cool, kinda gritty groove to it… The groove is unpolished, but of course it’s intentional – and it’s very nice… I also like drive here – and the small hints of psychedelia… This is a nice little track, without being overly impressive… #06: [145 BPM] Theoreme - Ridatsu “Party in Paris!!” … Theoreme is Tadashi Sasaki and he has an album out and tracks on a couple of full-on compilations… After a bombastic, orchestral intro things are soon developing into something even bigger… bassline is added … synths… And more orchestral pomp – and before you know if, the track is in full FX... Great use of stereo-effects here… And this is not your ordinary boring full-on formula track… Just wait until 4’30 when the build-up starts… tension building… you just know this is going to be good… you can cut the excitement with a knife … and then @ 5’52: BAM! “Party in Paris!!” … Climax time – and holy geisha, this is some brilliant full-on… Highly trance-inducing blasting acid-lines… Dance floor napalm! ;o) #07: [148 BPM] Bug Funk - Cursed Death Rmx First Bug Funk was Gamma and Mizuki, but now it’s only Mizuki producing what he calls ‘brain destruction’ … And yeah, I can see that… Or rather hear that… This is highly psychedelic music… Ripping 303s and synth-galore… Twisted, to say the least - with naïve, off-key melodies and dark basslines + all kinds of spooky samples and FX… Check out the old-school church-bells – cool! Gamma is trying to scare the shit out of us – and he succeeds… At least I’m freaked out when listening to this… And who doesn’t like getting scared? ;o) Brilliant track! #08: [146 BPM] Phi – Everything Never Can’t Stop Us Dude Ahh, Phi – the kings of Japanese tweakage and Engrish track titles! I was utterly blown away by Phi’s debut album Phinalizer released earlier this year on ELF Music… Now Shuji Ichimura & Shinnosuke Masuo brings us another full-blown goa-tune bearing their trademark sound… Highly psychedelic full-on in the good old sense… It’s full-scale, acid-ridden madness guaranteed to make you ass wiggle… Impressive track! #09: [144 BPM] Uni – Adventure Uni are Matsuda (Macho) and Yamazaki (Osho) from Kyoto and my good friend Jikkenteki have referred to them as one of Japan’s better kept psy-secrets… And I guess that’s true – for me at least. They’ve been in the game since 1996 and have released 3 albums – the last one in August 04. This is the oddball track of the compilation – with obvious references to other musical styles that you do not usually associate with psy-trance… Well, at least not in the same context as they are used here… Heavy metal guitar, easy-listening piano and all kinds of other stuff… I even think they sampled the Twin Peaks intro… This track is less accessible than some of the others, but after repeated listens I’ve come to appreciate it… I really like the diversity and the special atmosphere this track creates…And the production is flawless… Lovely! Well, it looks like the Phi-album Phinalizer wasn’t a lucky punch for ELF Music ‘cause this is another very fine release… This is an excellent compilation giving us a thumbnail sketch of what’s going on in Japan nowadays… We really get all sorts here… From light, fluffy morning trance to raw, brutal night trance… And everything in between! I’m particularly impressed with the acid-ridden full-on tracks – they’ve sliced my brain up like a Hatori Hanzo sword would have! And that’s damn near the best recommendation I can give… Anyone who likes intelligent psy-trance with wabi-flavour should check this out… Recommended! Arrigato! Kunichowa! Favourites: 2, 4, 6(!!), 7, 8(!), 9 DeathPosture External link: ELF Music: http://www.elf-music.net/ --- Will be out November 3rd 2004. Distribution outside Japan has not yet fallen into place – but rest assured, this will be in worldwide distribution soon… I’ll update this thread with links once the online-shops are sorted…
