FREq – Strange Attractors Format: CD Artist: FREq Title: Strange Atractors Label: Iboga Records, Denmark Cat. #: Iboga CD22 Year: 2004 Track listing: 01. 08’42” Carbon-based Lifeform 02. 10’11” Dreambody (Progressive Mix) 03. 08’06” Nurbs 04. 07’58” Strange Attractor 05. 09’09” Spacechanger 06. 08’32” Return to the Masters 07. 08’40” Awaken (Materialize) 08. 05’54” Bliss 09. 08’50” FREqTal (Zero One Edit) Review: “Full-on is fucking dead as... dead. Progressive, it's coming back in a big fucking way!” Oh yes, slightly rewritten Pulp Fiction sample… I know full-on isn’t dead – far from it…In fact, I luv full on! But damn, it’s been a good couple of months for progressive; Son Kite “Colours”, Kooler “Open” and now this… Native-Kiwi-now-Aussie Aran Gallagher has been in the music biz for years making sweet little, progressive gems…And now Danish quality label Iboga Records has the honour of releasing his much awaited album... The hype leading up to this, his debut album release, was immense, so let’s find out if it was worth the hype… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: First up is Carbon-Based Lifeform… A subtle, peaceful intro is quickly interrupted by a “lifeform” sample that is repeated numerous times throughout the track… More FX are added, and off we go… A very smooth, deep progressive bass leads the way of what turns out to be a sweet track! There is something very mellow about this track – The repeated samples and the Gregorian chanting just adds to the mellowness… Smooth! #02: Kicks off with a sonic manipulated voice sample “dreambody”… And soon the smooth, smooth FREq groove takes over, slowly developing this into a groove bomb! @ 2.25 there’s a break that continues to put my speakers to the test – it’s just so damn awesome that I have to come back to it again and again… After the super-sweet “climax” that track really takes off and it’s time to drink some magic monkey juice and take a trip to space-land… Superb! #03: We launch straight into the groove on Nurbs (whatever the hell that is…) …At first it’s darker, heavier repeated beats, but it evolves into a lighter, more joyful piece towards the end… As many ppl have pointed out, FREq is a genius when it comes to having the melodies “communicate” and it really comes on strong in this track… Check it out, it’s so invigorating… Very lovely track, both for the dance floor and for trancing out at home with headphones… Brilliant! #04: Ahhh, more instant FREq! The groove is present from the get-go on this title-track and you start bobbing your head instantly… Check out the very trippy digital drops + the HUGE build-up/break part @ 2.20 … Damn, I can’t wait until I get to hear that at a party on a big-ass sound system… The crowd will freak out to the phat, phat grooves! This shit is dope! #05: Time for Spacechanger! After 3 blasting tracks, it’s time to chill out just a little bit… The pace is slower and the overall groove is somewhat more laid-back… But make no mistake about it; this is still very much a progressive trance track… I dig the tribal percussion work and the spaced out children’s samples well-hidden in the background… Nice track! #06: ‘Return to the Masters’ was on the Iboga compilation “Puzzled” earlier this year, so chances are that you’ve heard it… Well, you should’ve ‘cause it’s a sweet track… Again FREq shows us how to make the different musical pieces ‘communicate’ in an intelligent way… Such a sophisticated use of stereo FX… I just luv how those tribal percussions ‘talk’ to each other… It’s deep, it’s mellow, it’s funky – it’s FREq! #07: Why waste time with long, boring intros? FREq instantly hits the spot with this spacey tune… There is so much going on in this progressive stomper – the trademark ‘communication’ is again used wisely and the groove is phatter than ever… A succulent beat and the well-placed robot-samples and exquisite melodies just add to the lovely flavour that is Awaken… Yummy! #08: And now we enter dub country… Strip off the beats, and you are left with FREq in its purest form… Deep, eerie atmospheric ambient with lovely little melodies, laid-back percussion and a sip of tribal world music… Lovely - pass the spliff! #09: And now for the bonus track, made with Mr. Fractal Glider… Progressive meets psytrance… Oh yes, on this track we get the best of both, and it should convert even the most hardened prog-sceptic… Check out the sweet melodies, the twisted psychedelia and the overall groove created by two of the most talented trance producers on the southern hemisphere! ;o) 9/10 Pop-quiz: In which studio was this mastered? High-hat studios or Abbey Road? *sS* You guessed it – this has Son Kite written ALL over it – and that’s without looking in the liner notes! At no time does the BPM exceed 140, but I still can’t stop moving… The production is flawless (as always when Son Kite is turning the knobs), the sound is crispy and the cover is very nice and informative… Kudos to Iboga Records for releasing such a jewel! As mentioned above, this has been a great year for progressive trance and I really think that this album completes the Holy Progressive Trinity with Son Kite “Colours” and Kooler “Open”… If you liked those two, you do not want to be without this one! Stellar release, that was definitely worth the hype! Damn, I look forward to seeing FREq live next Saturday in Løkken, Denmark… ;o) Favourites: 1, 2(!), 3(!!), 4(!!), 5, 7(!), 9 DeathPosture External links: FREq: www.freqsounds.com/ Iboga: www.iboga.dk/ Psyshop: www.psyshop.com (Audio samples available!) V/A – Doppler FX Format: CD Artist: Various Artists Title: Doppler FX Label: Alchemy Records, U.K. Cat. #: ALCD 010 Date: late April Year: 2004 Track listing: 01. 06’55” Rinkadink vs. Protoculture – Poolside Killers 02. 07’48” Tristan – Cats & Fish 03. 08’06” Shift & Simba feat. Judah - Dubmention 04. 08’22” Exaile – Pitch Shift Case 05. 07’24” Sesto Sento – Name of the Game 06. 06’45” Broken Toy – Creature of da Wheel 07. 07’42” Dark Soho vs. Fatali – Around the World 08. 08’04” Intelabeam vs. Cyclic – L’eft by a Comet 09. 08’29” Fatali vs. Bizarre Contact – Psychedelic Emotions Review: Full throttle full-on with a touch of UK trance magic… UK label Alchemy Records is out with another one of their critically acclaimed compilations… The never-ending collaboration trend is very much present here, and so is the Israeli invasion with more than half the featured artists being Israeli… Will this live up to expectations created by the dazzling Rinkadink album? Let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: First up is Rinkadink vs. Protoculture… The dust has hardly settled from Vana’s brilliant album ‘Rabbit From Darkside’ and now he’s back on Alchemy with this Protoculture collaboration… This is full-on! Poolside full-on … I’m not sure this is the stuff I’d play @ my pool, but that’s a different story all together… Constant changes in pace and rhythm, hard-hitting bass… Breaks and build-ups en mas – with all kinds of weird, twisted bleeps and acid belches and the occasional neat little melody… This has got the Vana touch for sure… Energetic track! ;o) #02: “Dogs living with cats and mice sleeping with fish… It’s just wrong and I think we need to put a stop to that sort of thing!” Next up is Triiiiiistan… Oh yes, I can’t get enough of Mr. Cooke’s compositions… And he does NOT disappoint on this little gem… Smooth, groovy intro topped up by an übercool Shpongle-like vocoded voice sample… Very British, very cool! ;o) There are some really heavy underlying beats here, alongside a wicked, yet subtle acid line… So deep, so groovy – Awesome! Oh, and nerds shouldn’t be allowed to dance! #03: The mystery of the disappeared dub! Now here’s Isr-alian Shift playing around with some of his buds… This is a pretty hectic track – it’s fast-paced with all kinds of melodies and FX twirling back and forth… Oh, and check out the very Analog Pussy-like voice sample… Maybe it’s Judah? Dunno… And I’m not sure if I like it or not… The music is pretty decent – without being revolutionary in any way… The second half of the track is better though… Decent track! #04: Uhhmmm very tasty intro on this one!… Sweet psychedelic guitar action from Israel – kinda reminds me of the Infected “Classical Mushroom” sound… This is pretty standard full-on Israeli trance, though with some added value in the form of some nice guitars, a couple of cool climaxes and uh, yeah pitch shifts… Not bad, not bad at all… #05: Wauw, this is one spacey track… Sesto Sento has already made quite a name for themselves on trance-floors around the world…And with this track it’s no wonder why… Maximum power full on with all kinds of psychedelic effects… Loads of twisted FX and more pitch shifts… Check out the crazy part @ 4’44 – Awesome! Stand-out track! #06: Ultra-short intro with engine talk… And then it’s just eerie, industrial sounding full on with rock’ish influences… There’s a weird old high-pitched sound in here that annoys the hell out of me… I’m sure this will appeal to all the Chemical Crew fans, but personally I’m not too impressed… #07: Ahh… Good old Dark Soho – and this time with neo full-on wonder Fatali… Style-clash really, but the outcome isn’t bad… Again, it is max power full-on, but this time with a slightly darker edge as always when Dark Soho is involved… The second half of the track is the best, where madness is just pumping away in the good old-fashioned manner… Sweet track! #08: I had no previous knowledge of neither Intelabeam nor Cyclic… A what a shame that was, ‘cause they seem really talented! Again it’s blasting full on with loads of impressive effects… It’s all really bouncy and happy and this morning track left a big smile on my face… Very nice track! #09: More Fatali, this time with Bizarre Contact…It sure is sunrise time now and the melodies queue up on this very blissful morning track… Classic Israeli full-on… The production is flawless, and it’s almost a little too well-polished… Generally, I like it though… Just take it for what it is; a light, fluffy morning track… Nice! First of all, check out the very, very classy cover-art… I dig it! Generally I like this compilation… If there were a couple of more stand-out tracks, this would’ve gotten an even higher mark in my cool-book! For the untrained ear, the majority of these tracks will sound similar… And to a certain degree, they are similar… So I guess you could say “for a V/A it just needs to be more V!”… But then again, people would have complained if the tunes were too different. So of course it is a matter of taste… If you do not appreciate Israeli full-on with a touch of UK psy-trance, I’d advise you to stay clear of this… If you do appreciate it however, you’ll love this! 7.5/10 Favourites: 2(!!), 4, 5(!!), 7, 8(!) Formatting updated 8th June '05 Kaya Project – Walking Through Format: CD Artist: Kaya Project Title: Walking Through Label: Interchill Records, Canada Cat. #: ICHILL CD 017 Date: May 10 (Japan) May 26 (Worldwide) Year: 2004 Track listing: 01. 06’12” Walking Through 02. 06’04” Slide 03. 06’10” Labess 04. 04’52” Olelo 05. 06’35” Twin Soul 06. 06’18” Nightflower [Kaya Project Rmx] 07. 06’56” Kanzaman Breaks 08. 06’15” Tribal Shift 09. 05’38” Stone Turns Black 10. 06’27” Only The Brave 11. 02’26” Resolve 12. 05’19” Rise Above Review: Plush world beats Tai Chi disciple Sebastian Taylor takes his fascination with the sounds of the Middle East, Asia and Hawaii to new levels with his debut Kaya Project album… Seb Taylor was one of the pioneers on the UK trance scene, renowned for his Shakta, Somaton and Digitalis projects… He has also enjoyed great success with his ethno lounge project Angel Tears, which had a track on one of the trendy Buddha Bar compilations… Anyway, as Kaya Project he’s out with this new album “Walking Through” on Canadian quality label Interchill Records… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: First up is as beautiful chilled track, previously released on a Stoned Asia compilation called World Peace… Seb shows off with his acoustic guitar and we are treated to some groovy, mellow beats… Arabian chants, tribal percussion, violins and a piano add to the smooth flavour of this delicious track! #02: The dubby feel continues on this down-tempo nugget… This track was made with Seb’s soul mate Natascha Chamberlain and they sure have a good thing going… The correlation between the acoustic guitar, the mellow bass and the tribal percussion is breathtaking… #03: This track kicks off in a subtle manner with a pan flute and all kinds of ethnic influences… Then we are treated to some lovely singing by Irina Mikhailova… Seb meet her in Mexico when she was touring with Medicine Drum… Her emotional lyrics and the Arabian violin are very nice, and add to the Middle Eastern feel this track has… #04: It gets even more tribal now… Male lyrics are in focus – they remind me of the ones in Juno Reactor’s “Hule Lam”… I have no idea what he’s singing, but although his voice is kinda ‘lazy’ it’s very hypnotizing… Loads of tribal percussion here too… #05: As mentioned earlier Natascha Chamberlain is Seb’s twin soul, so this must be a tribute to her…This was also previously released, on the Six Degrees compilation “Arabian Travels 2”… More female ethnic vocals and Seb playing all kinds of instruments… Darboukas and kalimba to name a few… There’s also some really cool guitar and flute action going on in this track! #06: This is a remix to an Irina Mikhailova track… And what a lovely remix it is… Kinda reminds me of some of the best Asura work… A beautiful acoustic guitar, flutes, drums, congas and something that sounds like a didgeridoo… This is ethno chill at its best! #07: Time for Kanzaman Breaks! This rocks! It’s really hard to describe, but it’s something like groovy, down beat, ethnic break-beat trance … Loads of drums to keep the steady pace and some twisted Arabic chanting… Oh and there’s even a break/build-up part here… Well, kinda! ;o) #08: Some beautiful female singing is soon “disrupted” by some friendly beats… Accompanied by twisted, psychedelic effects and a children’s choir this track has parts that resembles Shpongle… A lot of stuff is going on here, and I have a hard time not moving to this tribal tune… #09: Now the stones turn black… Previously released on the Interchill compilation 13th Moon, this track is slightly darker – I guess it’s night now and that’s why the stones have turned black… This could easily be the soundtrack to some dark, tribal ritual with loads of chanting, violin, flute and deep, steady percussion… Nice! #10: Let’s take it down a notch... It’s the break of dawn now and the mood is lighter... The sounds are just beautiful here... Seb takes his musical skills to new levels here, showing us just how talented he is with his guitar, flute, violin and sampler... A perfect blend of ancient sounds with modern production wizardry... #11: Now this is an odd little short track... Virtually beat-less, this is just a piano and an acoustic guitar, both played with immense talent. I wish I had those skills – Seb; you could play with Slowhand, Satriani or Santana! ;o) #12: The last track is another chilled gem... Organic in nature, with harmonic whispering and the odd tribal effect thrown in here and there... I couldn’t have wished for a better way to end what has truly been a magical journey... Seb Taylor and Interchill – how can you go wrong? Well, you can’t really... This is truly a fine album which just oozes quality all the way through... Though there is a casual connection between all tracks, the variation is vast... A near perfect blend of world beats and sonic studio manipulation... Also, the artwork is beautiful… The front cover is an original piece by Suzanne Brady – nicey nice! All in all, I’d recommend this album to any fan of ethnic world beats with a groovy twist... 8.5/10 Favourites: 1, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 DeathPosture External links: Interchill: www.interchill.com (Audio sample available!)
