Kooler - Open Link to hi-res cover Format: CD Artist: Kooler Title: Open Label: Kamaflage, U.K. Cat. #: BFLCD73 Date: May 26 Year: 2004 Track listing: 01. 08’30” In The Heights 02. 09’01” Solid Kiss 03. 09’40” Freefall 04. 09’47” Harold & Maude 05. 06’58” Open 06. 07’55” Superstar 07. 08’09” Awake 08. 08’22” Lift Lift 09. 06’36” Mango Review: Is Seb Mullaert the biggest star in the universe? It seems that everything Swedish super-producer Sebastian Mullaert touches turns into gold! A résumé that lists Son Kite, Minilogue, Filur, Trimatic, Dab Screen and Ooze tells more than enough… Now he’s out with a full album under his Kooler alias – the first CD album to be released on Dragonfly spin-off prog label Kamaflage… And this looks to be one for the movers and groovers… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: A nice chilled intro track here… Floating, dubby and straightforward… It’s a very rich, moody soundscape with all kinds of atmospheric, eerie sounds in the background… The first beats are introduced @ 1.30 and continues throughout the track… Nothing too complicated is going on until 6.00 - just plain progressive house – with the Mullaert quality stamp… The last 2.30 minutes are by far the best, where the moody atmosphere is even more omnipresent… Nicey nice! ;o) #02: Let’s go deeper now… After about 55 seconds of beat-less chilling, it’s tribal groove time! This really showcases the talent of Seb - the king of progressive trance! I mean, just listen to those drums – they’ve got High Hat studios written all over them! It’s so contagious – so well produced. It’s light and fluffy and dark and heavy… Awesome! ;o) #03: This tune was already released on Kamaflage 3 and as a 12” so there’s a good chance you’ve heard it already… It’s the sexy track! ;o) The weightless heavyweight – light as a feather and heavy as an elephant… Classic progressive beach-house trance at its best! This is amazing, hands down! #04: This track was done with Marcus, so it’s kinda like a Son Kite track… Harold & Maude? Sounds like and old, married couple… Are you trying to tell us something Seb and Marc? ;o) Anyway, this is another fine tune… It slowly builds and builds for 2 minutes, before breaking out the affluent, infectious baseline… And as a striking contrast; the naïve melody which adds to the overall bounce-your-head effect this very smooth track has! #05: We get a break-beat intro on the title track here… Seb plays around with all kinds of electro samples, turning the knobs and just experimenting…I’m guessing that this was composed around the same time as the “The Stars Within Us” tune from the Colours album by Son Kite… All the way through the beats are cut, dubbed and filtered… It’s one of the most chilled tracks on the album – its beach-house trance! Nice! #06: “And now ladies and gentlemen, we present the biggest star in the universe!” Well, if we’re talking progressive beach trance, Kooler is definitely a strong contender for that title! Second track with Marcus… And this time, no ambient intro… In fact we’re now entering the more danceable part of the album… A deep, driving bassline sets the mood from the first second and alongside some wicked squelches it just builds and builds… Bob the Builder would be proud! ;o) Parts of this reminds me of the now famous Son Kite track “On Air” which is just as stellar as this is! Oh, and check out the samba-spice too… I’ll play this for ages! Best track here! #07: “Look at the way it goes around”… Another deep, housy, progressive trance tune here… Tribal, repetitive percussion work accompanied by light, happy melodies… Jaw-dropping production and some seriously groovy rhythms… Very stylish break and build-up… Very subtle, almost simple… But it works! Sweet track! #08: I’m not sure if this is the same as the Filur track Life Lift released by Kamaflage back in 2001 as I’ve never heard it – but whatever it is, it’s a nice little tune… Gone are the darker beats and we’re left with some smooth, chilled vibes… Delic’s! ;o) #09: Alright, time for the mango-track! This is also a relaxed piece, with a wonderful chilled atmosphere… Under normal circumstances that high-pitched squelch would have grossed me out, but here it just fits perfectly… The female vocals also add to the overall sexiness of this track… Sweet way to finish a sweet album! ;o) The promotional material describes this as “deep tribal grooves, awesome drops, infectious basslines and futuristic house…” Yeah, agreed… And might I also add smooth, groovy, funky, uplifting, euphoric and very, very sexy! As you can tell, I like the middle part of the album best, but all tracks are off a very high standard… Full-on goa-heads and devout minimal freaks, should probably stay clear of this release - unless they are open-minded! This is borderline stuff and often it crosses the boundaries well into house territory! But who really cares, as long as the music is good? And believe me; it’s good… It’s good… It’s goooood! ;o) If you enjoyed the Son Kite album “Colours”, you’ll enjoy this too! 11. Son Kite - Colours Format: CD Artist: Son Kite Title: Colours Label: Digital Structures, Sweden Cat. #:DIGCD015 Year: 2004 Track listing: 01. 09’37” Other Side 02. 08’58” Focus 03. 09’36” On Air 04. 08’03” Game & Watch 05. 07’38” Let Us Be 06. 07’43” The Stars Within Us 07. 09’48” Jukebox 08. 09’06” Made To Move 09. 08’05” Colours Review: Step two of a four-stage rocket! Finally it’s out… The album we’ve all been waiting for. The release of the “On Air Remixes” EP last month gave us a mouth-watering foretaste of what was coming… A full album from the talented wizards behind Sweden’s biggest trance-export: Marcus Henriksson & Sebastian Muellart a.k.a. Son Kite. They’ve moved into release-concept territory with their ambitious “Colours” project, consisting of one album, two singles and a live-DVD... Very impressive! So, let’s see what the hype was all about… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Let’s start… Pay close attention to that Son Kite whistle – it’s the first and last thing you’ll hear on this album… The whole album is one big loop! ;o) The intro is long and lukewarm… Slowly it progresses, FX are added… Water, wind, violin, percussion, calm voice samples… and then bam! The smooth, groovy, crispy Son Kite baseline… Fast kicks and hi-hats are added creating chunky grooves leading to pure bliss… Amazing track! #02: The album is mixed, so we slip almost unnoticed into track two… The progressive groove continues here – the intro is sweet as candy… And then, an almost exploding bass grabs you… The bass is just so deep and brutal, but at the same time sweet and almost sexy! @ 6’00 the pace quickens and all hell brakes loose – A dark, mean, wall of bass-groove rips the track in half and slowly builds it up again… Holy phuck, this is good… Overwhelming track! #03: Pheeew, time to chill for a short while with the intro from last year’s summer-bash “On Air”. Allow me to copy/paste from my previous EP review: A very cool, floating, dream-like intro sets the mood… Someone hits a piano-key about 5-6 times, low voice-muttering samples in the back-ground, someone talking about radio – basically we’re just chilling out, having a good time… And then, at 2:22 the infamous Swedish progressive baseline cuts thru the silence like a scythe… This is the true essence of trance; razor-sharp percussion, beautiful synths, wonderful melody… And a build-up @ 5:15 that’ll annoy the hell out of you the first time you hear it, but after a few listens you’ll give in to the sheer genius that is On Air! So get your damn hands up in the air – this is a magic track! #04: “Let’s go back upstairs” … We mix smoothly into Game & Watch… But something’s changed here; it appears the kicks are harder and the bass is less polished… What gives? For a second you want to sound the cheddar-alarm, but no worries… Although this is the most full on sounding track on the album, it’s a sweet track that in no way compromises the groove… Hypnotic morning trance ala Son Kite! Nice track! #05: Ahh let’s take a trip back in time… Somewhat distorted melodies accompanied by a melancholy feel… Plus we get lyrics & vocals by C. Brink and M. Kratz… It’s not Michele Adamson standard, but very nice nevertheless… Also good use of stereo here… Nice track! #06: Go fly a kite – into the world of electro crash! Is progressive electro psy even invented? Well, it is now… We get the best of both worlds here… Old school kitschy computer sounds and classic robot voice box – combined with massive progressive rhythm patterns… Look forward to the sweet, sweet build-up part – can’t wait to hear that at a party… Electro acid flash! Lovely track! #07: Put another dime in the jukebox baby… Ambient intro … Just relax and float downstream… A subtle drum pattern is introduced… More delicate effects are added… The beat is slightly cut… The old Chicago warehouse techno atmosphere is present… And then: “Rhythm… rhythm… rhythm…!” A repetitive, simple voice reminds us that this is rhythm… Thanks! This is a very minimal track – and even a tad too minimal for my taste. It is funky however, especially for the last 3 minutes… Ok track! #08: After a long fade we progress into “Made to Move”… And this is a bouncy piece for sure… Focus has shifted back to percussion now, and we are treated to some cool steel oil drum beats… And yes the rumours were true; there is a definite Trommelmaschine influence here… And it sounds great! It’s a very danceable, tribal, progressive tune… Nice track! #09: The last track starts and ends exactly like the first track… The infamous whistle or whatever it is… What a nifty feature! This is a slightly slower track, but still so unbelievably groovy… All kinds of psychedelic bleeps and blops, birds whistling, water dripping… Beautiful melodies mixed with a distinctive wiggle-your-toe Son Kite beat… Sweet track! Woow, what a trip! This album is truly an experience… Epic trance at its best! A true journey showcasing the immense talent of the Son Kite guys… As I’ve said before they continue to distance themselves from the vast majority of trance labels – both production-wise and concept-wise! As always with Digital Structures the visual art is striking – great, tasteful cover art…However, I dislike the cardboard wrapper around the jewel case – what’s the point with those? Style wise this album embrace several electronic genres… It ranges from old school techno and house to cutting edge modern electronica… I like most of it, though there are tracks which doesn’t really scratch my itch… It is however miles ahead of the bulk of electronic releases nowadays…I’d even go as far as calling this a milestone album – instant classic! Two years after the critically acclaimed “Soma Agents” (last proper release from Flying Rhino… R.I.P.) Germany’s dark psycho trance duo Charasmatix is back! The Berlin based powerhouse duo consists of Martin Schoenauer (DJ Aze) & Karl Rademacher (Cybersnack) has been making music in different guises since the early 1990es… We got a taster of their 2004 sound on the Wizzy Noise “Timeline Remixes” EP a few months back, and now their back with a full album mastered by Mark Pfurtscheller a.k.a. Kopfuss Resonator… I don’t know about you, but I’m expecting this to be dark, pounding, progressive, groovy psy-trance with a touch of German psy-teKk… Do they need magic spells to make an album like that? Let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Is this the norm at all? Well, I hope so, ‘cause this a damn fine first track! Instantly we are greeted by a deeeeeeeep baseline: mechanical, metallic, pounding – amazing! You remember the ragamuffin voice sample from Aircrash Bureau’s “Time Traveller” track? Well, it’s revived here and it fits perfectly – it all adds to the funky, yet dark atmosphere in this track! Very cool track! #02: This is crazy – with the extra z! The intro is very weird – I think it’s the Kopfuss Resonator impact showing here… At first I get an eerie jamboree feeling, but it soon turns into dark, dusty house… With an underlying psychedelic groove present throughout the track! It’s topped of by subtle insect-like humming hidden in between everything… I have a hard time digging this track though… It’s just too crazZy for my taste! Decent track! #03: Another clever play on words… Brace yourself – these are some dark German Stampfenrhythmen. The dark trademark Charasmatix-sound in full effect… Not much else is going on but some serious head banging night trance… Ok track! #04: Oh my, it gets even darker now… We’re getting even closer to Halloween trance now, as this track is packed with horror-effects: Screaming, moaning and other evocative sounds… The bass pumps along at and incredible speed followed by psychedelic FX… Somehow dark and spooky, but my head is still bopping along… Cool track! #05: Healing world? The speed is slower now, and the bass is tucked away in the background… Emphasized are the classic ‘psychedelic digital drips’ and some dude talking with a bizarre accent… The track is packed with all kinds of psychedelic effects, but somehow it doesn’t seem to go anywhere… Decent track! #06: “Meet – the nice sound!” As far as I know, this track was made in collaboration with Zerotonine and released last year on a Tatsu comp!?… Correct me, if I’m wrong… Anyway, a nice peaceful intro is brutally disrupted by a very heavy bass… This is really a percussion track, with clever use of kick-drums, hi-hats, snare, cut beats, etc… Somehow they manage to sneak a melody into this dark track… Well, it’s a dark melody, but it’s there nevertheless… Ok track! #07: What ‘the National Association of Elevator Contractors’ has to do with trance is beyond me!?… This is another extremely dark track with an evil pounding bass line… Check out the cool ‘acceleration bit” @ 3’15… I like small surprises like that, and this track has a few of them… Nice track! #08: Damn, now this is a cool intro… I don’t know if it’s a guitar or a chain saw! Skazi eat your heart out! It’s very, very dark night trance… Perfect for head banging – and complimentary headache included! You better have your audio equipment set up properly for this massive wall of sound to come through properly! Repetitive, industrial sounds make this a gritty beast! Sweet track! #09: Nostalgic track name ;o)… If you were hoping for a chilled track, forget about it… This is more Charasmatix mayhem... The pace has slowed down though – but just a little… It’s still dark and monotonous, but the nice percussion work and the funny samples somehow add to the overall groovy feel… Nice track! In my humble opinion there are a few misses and a bunch of winners on this album… The flow is somewhat interrupted by the lack of coherence between the tracks… If the more experimental tracks came first, followed by the darker ones, this would have been an even smoother experience… That flaw does not however, ruin the impression of a very nice album… I’m sure this will turn some heads and appeal to the many fans of Charasmatix and their trademark sound… Recommended! 8/10 Favourites: 1(!!), 4, 7, 8 DeathPosture External links: Candyflip Records: www.candyflip-records.com Saiko Sounds: www.saikosounds.com (Audio samples available!) Finally Paris-based trance duo Digital Talk (Luc & Julien of former Droidsect fame) is out with their debut album … Released by Greek label Acidance, renowned for darker releases and with album mastering by “horror trance godfather” Xenomorph, the basis for some spooky horror trance should be laid down… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: We launch straight into… Da-da-da-da… The Abyss! Quickly the listener is introduced to the dark, distorted, mental, horror-trance sound that is present throughout the album… Also Digital Talk elegantly showcases their outstanding production quality… Spotless, crystal clear, sounds – it’s a pleasure to listen to! I particularly enjoy the second, most full on half of this track… Sweet track! #02: This track is slightly darker, more monotonous and more introvert… The baseline is slightly tedious, though there are small variations… There are interesting bits, especially the bleeps but they kinda drown in the cloned bass… Decent track! #03: What does the Spanish word for bicycle has to do with time travel? Listen to this track and you’ll be even more confused! This track is dark and gritty, but again the baseline is a bit tedious and at times it’s as if it lacks direction… Ok track! #04: Now things are picking up again…We are treated with more variation now… Mad, extreme, intense, intoxicating, crazy, spooky – this track is all that and more… Make sure you have the proper audio equipment - the bass in this is one is HUGE! ;o) The last 4 minutes are just pure bliss… Extremely twisted and psychedelic, this is so tasty! Kick ass track! #05: Together with #7, this is the fastest track here and I’m a sucker for good old fast-paced full on… Complete with dark Darth Vader-like distorted vocals, this baby will fit right into any decent set of dark night trance. Stellar track! #06: Very neat swooshing FX in the intro of this title track… Intelligent use of stereo… Steady, dark bass line all the way through with jolly bouncing melodies sprayed on top… Though slightly more variation wouldn’t have hurt… Nice track! #07: Another extremely fast-paced tune… The horror atmosphere is very much intact… Very trippy, very dark… Those weird, pitched up alien-baby voices in the second half of the track freaks me out! I fear to watch, yet I cannot look away… Smooth track! #08: Weird old zombie-lazy baseline combined with dark, twisted psychedelia and voice samples from some horror-flick… Again the production is crystal clear – sonic wizardry at its best! Cool track! #09: Well, I’ll be dammed, if this isn’t even darker than the rest… Despite a bpm of only 72! Be prepared for this one – extremely scary stuff… If this was a movie, I’d be covering my eyes by now… What the fuck is this - horror ambient? Whatever the hell it is, I’m sold… This is so unbelievably well crafted! I could not have wished for a better track to finish off the album… Amazing track! You’ll definitely have to been in the mood for this… You’ll have to dig the darker sides of full on psytrance to appreciate this… Critics will dub this boring and predictable – more than a few tracks have almost the same baseline throughout the album. However, there is variation on a subtle level… You’ll just have to dig deeper to find it… The engineer work is flawless… These boys sure know their way around a studio – and I’m sure Xenomorph’s presence didn’t impede the process of creating this murky piece… If you’re looking for tunes for your next Halloween set, give this one a try! 8/10 Favourites: 1, 4(!!), 5(!), 9(!!!) All artist but one featured here are Israeli - Yeah, who would’ve guessed?! It’s nice however, to see labels embracing more than just one genre... This is pretty much a teaser compilation for artist albums coming up… At least half of the featured acts have upcoming albums, so let’s see what they can do… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: What are you waiting for – get in there!? This first track is something as rare as epic progressive trance… We get the best of both worlds here… Beautiful morning trance with floating acoustic guitar melodies and crisp, smooth, groovy percussion… And that Lyte, sure knows how to pick the strings on his guitar… Super cool track! #02: Neverland – the dark, eerie hangout of Wacko Jacko – oh, the horror! Definitely night time trance here, with noisy, spooky bits thrown in… This isn’t for the faint hearted, but enjoy it… Nice track! #03: What a kinky rooster this is… Massive, full on track here – it’s like a big wall of acid coming right at you at an incredible pace… Watch out, it can be a little too hectic at times…The coolest thing about this is definitely the break & build up in the second part of the track… Ok track! #04: You never leave this place alive! Mmmm… very nice intro on this track… Unfortunately I don’t know the original, but this remix sounds pretty straightforward… It’s Israeli full on psy-trance… Besides the intro, the first half is pretty boring and predictable, but towards the end the pace quickens and it’s becomes more intensive – to my liking… I wish the whole track was like the last 2 minutes… Ok track! #05: More Israeli full on here… Very classy intro with female vocals, but soon it’s full on time again – pretty standard, Israeli neo full on… It’s goes on like that for 4 minutes… Again, it’s the second part of the track that’s best… The pace quickens and the melodies become much more trance educing… Also we get a super break/build-up part… Cool track (second half any way)! #06: Time Lock is featured three times on this compilation… And he does his best work on his own… This track rocks all the way through… 145 bpm of highly psychedelic full on trance… And phuck me if that part @ 4:40 won’t blast anyone away… Awesome track! #07: Peek-a-boo, I see you! If you’ve ever heard Skazi, Chemical Crew or Paranormal Attack play live or DJ, I’m sure you’ve heard Exaile tracks too… This is Skazi-trance for sure… High pitched acid belches and fast, dark bass line… But where the hell are the guitars? He he… Many people appreciate the melody in there – however, it kinda bugs me… This track can also become too intense at times, but generally I like it… Cool track! #08: My fellow reviewer Detox dubbed this “the track with the run-for-your-life atmosphere” and that’s the best damn description I can think off… ;o) Very intelligent percussion work here; both used as tribal tools, but also as part of the general Hitchcock-feel this track has… This is like the soundtrack to some eerie psychological thriller… And damn, that’s cool! #09: Many people have praised this Dooper Doopler track, but frankly I don’t understand the hype… It sounds like your usual, well produced, neo full on trance… But perhaps I’m missing something? Decent track! Nice collection of tracks here… Some of the tracks are a bit anonymous, or has anonymous parts, but overall most of it is nice and fresh… I’m looking forward to hearing more from especially Molecular and Time Lock, and I’m sure we’ll hear their tracks on the upcoming summer festivals… If you like the modern Israeli sound, this is a compilation you do not want to be without! 8/10 Favourites: 1 (!), 6 (!!), 7, 8 DeathPosture External links: Zillion Mental Records: www.zmarecords.com Psyshop: www.psyshop.com (soundclips available) Saiko Sounds: www.saikosounds.com Chaos Unlimited: www.chaosunlimited.co.uk Trance Shop: www.trance-shop.com
