  3. V/A – Psionic Earth Format: CD Artist: Various Title: Psionic Earth Label: Digital Psionics Cat. #: DPSI 008 Year: 2004 Track listing: 01: 08’18” Damage - Wicked 02: 07’36” Safi Connection – Vampire City 03: 06’43” Dark Nebual/Scatterbrain – Geometric Patterns 04: 07’31” Kluster - Guilty 05: 06’46” Bon – Problem Child 06: 07’16” Procs - Toons 07: 08’26” Praecox – Mova Trava 08: 07’04” Cyanescens – Psychotropic Investigations 09: 07’31” Silicon Sound – Prime Drive 10: 09’04” Navajo – Drag Killer Review: Sweet fancy Moses – Digital Psionics have done it again! This is quickly becoming one of my fav’e labels… In the endless stream of boring full-on releases it’s nice to a label like DS releasing very interesting, fresh stuff like Scatterbrain, Dark Nebula and the cool Psionics compilations… And here’s another great one! Packed with tracks by innovative producers from all over the world. Let me take you thru the tracks: #01: Damage kicks things off with this wicked tune (Argh sorry; pun too obvious!). This is some scary shit. Seriously – we’re talking horror trance here… This track is shrouded in a very spooky, yet unbelievably cool atmosphere… Be careful if you listen to this in the dark… Boooh! Dark, powerful, extremely energetic night trance here from South Africa! Very, very cool track! #02: “Take me down to the Vampire City, where the grass is red and the girls have fangs!” … Safi Connection kinda continues in the same dark thread, though this is not as spooky! In fact, this lacks some of the craziness I like so much… Average track! #03: Oh baby, this is awesome… Scatterbrain – Best thing outta Australia last year! Working together with Dark Nebula – the spearheads of Digital Psionics. A match made in heaven… This is definitely the best track here… It’s so fucking huge. “How would I describe it? Terrifying. Enlightening. But utterly terrifying. You swear you'll never go back. Ever. And the next thing you know, you're taking it again. You're going down that tunnel”… Ooops, I accidentally quoted Scatterbrain from their excellent track Mexican Jesus [scatterbrain – Infernal Angel, Digital Psionics 2003]… But that’s exactly what this track sounds like… Like a gigantic monster… A wall of sound thrown coming right at you! Deeply psychedelic, highly intoxicating, truly a wonderful experience! Amazing track! #04: This must be the psy equivalent of Josh Wink’s classic “Don’t Laugh”… Funny laughing samples in the intro… Dark, Swedish forest-madness here… Huge electronic sounding bleeps and acid twirls, seasoned with hillbilly voice samples… Nice track! #05: The Italian problem child… So, is that Berlusconi or Stallone? Whatever, the case might be, this is another neo full on, dust driven, propane injected trance track! The promotional text hits it spot on, with that description… Again, loads and loads of acid… It’s mayhem, it’s good, it’s goooood! #06: More madness from the deep forests of Sweden… Heavy use of cut beats, the random madness and twisted psychedelia… Also, good stereo effect in parts of the track!... The sample annoys me though… What the hell are you looking for? Average track! #07: The nutcases from Poland are here with another crazy ass tune… Apparently “Mowa Trawa” loosely translates into “talking rubbish”… And that’s an apposite title, ‘cause I’m not getting any of this…That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I’m just having trouble really getting into this track… It’s not bad or anything, in fact it’s very psychedelic… But somehow it just doesn’t DO it for me… Perhaps it’s too minimal or something… Average track! #08: So, we’re back in bush country… And now things are picking up. This stimulates my taste buds in just the right way… So what’s in this dish? A decent bass line, happy, melodic, acid synths, well-chosen voice samples… This is not groundbreaking in any way; it’s just straight forward happy psytrance… Decent track! #09: Ahh, good old Silicon Sound… When has this Frenchman ever let us down? Never! Good, so we agree… And Mr. Regier certainly does not let us down this time either… What we have here is something as rare, as a dark melodic piece… A driving, energetic melody bomb of a track, that takes you on a journey…. Oh, the melodies are soooo good here… So twisted, so driving… Johannes my man, great track! #10: A Danish Navajo indian? I’m Danish, and I’ve never seen oneof those… Perhaps I hang out in the wrong places? Anyhow, we’re back in the horror trance category… Man, this is dark, but in the best of ways… Remember the atmosphere in The Delta’s “Thing”? Almost the same thing here… This could easily be the soundtrack to some horror movie… Again, do NOT listen to this in the dark… You’ll wet yourself! Check out the moped near the end! Funny stuff! My compatriot has done a great job here, this is a wicked track! Woow, what a great compilation this is… 3 tracks that are average, but by no means bad… The rest is just better (Well, duh!)… And when the standard is this high, competition is fierce! I would have changed the order of the tracks though, so the 3 horror tracks were placed together, but again, that’s nitpicking… If you like the neo trance sound of Digital Psionics, this will not let you down… Pure trance floor fuel! Sandman - End of the World Earthling - LSD Story Both uses the sample: Today, a young man on acid, realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. DeathPosture
  6. V/A – Mountain High Format: CD Artist: Various Title: Mountain High Label: Candyflip Cat. #: CD CF06 Year: 2003 Track listing: 01: 07’25” Solar Field – The Sight is White 02: 07’22” Vibrasphere – All Green Seasons 03: 06’51” Indidginus – Spiritual Spearmints 04: 06’43” Triac feat. Sharon – Anticipation 05: 05’59” J. viewz – Untracked 06: 08’48” Kick Bong – Incense 07: 07’44” Nada – Numbers 08: 07’14” Cell – The Bushman 09: 07’01” Intocyrcle feat. Wiama – Maui Tici Tici 10: 05’51” J. viewz – Courage Wants to Laugh 11: 07’45” A.e.s.Dana – Seaweeds Corporate From the misty mountains of Greece, here’s Mountain High! Mountain high? Clever little play on words, eh? Nicey nice… Anyway, here’s a bunch of chilled tunes from Greek label Candyflip – compiled by top dog Alex Candy himself. Mastered by Huby & Vincent from Ultimae – which is a quality stamp in my book! This is supposed to be a journey-compilation. Starting at the bottom of the mountain, and then progressing thru the tracks ‘till the mountain top is reaching with the last track… How nice a concept… Let the journey begin… #01: The soundtrack to the first steps up the hill is this little wonder, by Solar Fields. Nothing complicated going on here, this is minimal ambient… Beatless grooves and mellow soundscapes… Pure ambient… Magical! #02: Vibrasphere – The kings of progression! Does it get any better? ;o) This is dub territory folks… Easy going atmospheric soundscapes, deep groovy beats and brilliant little melodies – all very intelligently put together into one amazing work of art! #03: Ahh, this one is so damn cool… Indidginus nailed it! The perfect chilled, moody ambience is there from the get go, with organic sounds – wind, water, chanting… Accompanied by a gentle keyboard playing a simple melody… And then, a deeeeeeeeep, dubby bass slowly pokes its head out…. How beautiful! #04: Triac continues in Indidginus’ footpaths, up the mountain. We’re still at the very mellow part of the… ehh… mellow scale! Dubby beats, organic sounds, smooth percussion… Man, I like this part of the mountain! Electro trance melodies chilled to perfection! Nice track! #05: J.viewz the downbeat alter-ego of Jonathan from critically acclaimed Israeli sensation Violet Vision… And the talent we all know clearly shines through on this experimental piece. Yes, we’ve moved north up the mountain and the focus is slowly going towards more tribal, housey dub… This track has some of the most interesting voice samples… Repetitive, eastern inspired chants cut up and looped… Very intoxicating. Another nice track! #06: Kick the bong and light some incense! We’re getting even more tribal now… This percussion based track slowly builds into something that could be the soundtrack to some tribal ritual… Characteristic is the use of a minimal acoustic guitar… Or perhaps even a sitar? Can’t tell, but it sounds so good… I’m lighting some incense right now! Very ethnic, very slow, very nice! #07: “Numbers go on!?” Rrrright, so further up the mountain, we’re getting just a little tranceier now… But just a little. The bass is a little sharper now, and suddenly we have drum loops… This is ethno electro dub, in its purest form… Also this track showcases good use of percussion with all kinds of nice rhythms… However, I feel it kinda lacks a sense of direction. Average track. #08: Going further up, we encounter a bushman… Wow, jungle-influenced tribal beats alongside distant floating melodies and the random voice sample of a woman thrown in here and there…This is one funky bushman… Though, he tends to be stuck on the same note for a short while…And what’s with the abrupt ending? Decent track #09: Ahh, things are picking up now… This dubby, electro piece has an instant wiggle-your-toe effect on you… All kinds of percussion are used here… Drums, bongos, claves, etc… Also we’re treated to a simple, yet beautiful melody that occasionally pops up… And again – a short sample of a woman sayin’ something in a foreign language… Very cool track! #10: Takin’ it down a notch… So we’re going down the mountain now? Second track from J. viewz, though the style is somewhat different here… We’re going dubby again – I’d even go as far as saying heavy dub – With Raja Ram-like flutes… Eventually, the track reaches some kind of peak where we get some well crafted, slow electric-guitar sounds… Decent track! #11: We’ve reached the top! This is Vincent of former Asura-fame – and man, does he know his shit! This is by far the “darkest” track here… Extremely well-produced dark, ambient here… Immensely psychedelic – trance-inducing in nature… Truly a worthy last track… This is amazing! This is truly a magical journey. All in all, this is a huge, amazing, eclectic ambient compilation. The production is crystal-clear and the most of the tunes are so very good. Perhaps I would have changed the order of some of the tracks, to ensure a 100% flawless flow, but that’s really nitpicking… Also, despite the beautiful artwork on the cover, my digipack seem to be of low quality as the plastic-bit holding the CD has already detached itself from the actual digipack. That’s a shame ‘cause generally this CD oozes quality all the way through! This album gain so much with headphones so put them on, close your eyes and climb that misty mountain! It’s a journey you’ll not soon forget. Highly recommended! 9/10 Favourites: 1, 3(!!), 6, 9(!), 10(!!) 7. Scatterbrain – Infernal Angel Format: CD Artist: Scatterbrain Title: Infernal Angel Label: Digital Psionics Cat. #: DPSI 007 Year: 2003 Track listing: 01: 07’24“ Mexican Jesus 02: 07’25“ Wool Gathering 03: 08’30“ Bedlam 04: 08’17” Infernal Angels 05: 07’31” Mental Vortex 06: 06’23” Hex 07: 07’02” Possessed 08: 07’12” Scattergram 09: 06’54” Pass The Buck 10: 06’50” Power Of Inner Strength Review: Very late on this one, but make no mistake about it – One of the best albums of 2003! Beautifully crafted by crazy ass Aussie Adam Walters, here’s one of the best artist albums of 2003. Hands down! This gem surfaced back in August 2003 amidst small attention. Well, at least with me. I completely missed it the first time around, but now it’s back with a vengeance! I don’t know if the word Scatterbrain refers to the sci-fi author Larry Niven who’s known to have “scatterbrained” most of his stories. Or could it be a spoof of the Radiohead track? I don’t know – what I do know is that this is one heck of an album. Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: This was the first track I heard from the album in the autumn of 2003, and I was completely awestruck back then – and I still am… A psy track that focussed mainly on voice-samples. In fact, half of the track is a guy talking about drugs. Smells like cheddar? Well, you’re wrong. This track is amazing – the long bits of dialog carries the track to a higher level, and this baby will stay with you for a long time! This is a story track. About a guy blown away on ayahuasca who meets the Mexican Jesus, butt naked in the middle of the Yellowstone National Park. Here’s a transcript of some of the lyrics: ”Genetic material getting changed before your eyes. Man, people think they know about drugs, but... That ain't a drug, it's a sacrament. It's just a portal to another world. It's realities that are always there. A key to other dimensions […] That we live with them all the time. Thankfully our awareness never touches... […] How would I describe it? Terrifying. Enlightening. But utterly terrifying. You swear you'll never go back. Ever. And the next thing you know, you're taking it again. You're going down that tunnel.” Yes, I keep going down that tunnel again… I can’t stop listening to this track. It’s just so damn hypnotizing! I love it! [For a full transcript, check Psychedelic Mind Expander – I’ve submitted the full lyrics there!] #02: Scatterbrain gives humour pride of place, and this track is a good example. It starts with a funny sample of an answering machine, and then blasts into a full-on psychedelic mayhem without any warning. Homer Simpson is there with his just question “Where’s the any key?”… Packed with funny samples, sprinkled on top of powerful bass lines, tweeps, bleeps and random insanity – I dare anyone to sit still to this piece. #03: More spaghetti Mr. Anderson? If all bedlams are like this, I wanna be compulsorily detained right now! This is another acid-driven full on stomper, packed with well-chosen samples showcasing just how much talent comes out of Australia. There must be something in their water supply!? “I’m not crazy… I’m not crazy… I’m not crazy…”… Riiiiiight… This IS crazy, but in the best of ways! Wonderful track! #04: The title track has more melodies than the majority of the album. Don’t worry; the insanity is still very much present here. This is a very organic sounding track, emphasizing a darker, deeper side of Scatterbrain. A heavy, pumping bass line, underneath melodic synths seasoned with the very distinctive Scatterbrain acid twirls. How can you go wrong with that cocktail? Beautiful track! #05: “I am the god of hell fire, and I bring you….” …this mental whirlpool of aciiiiiid! Shrek is here… A police radio too…And sirens! Typical Scatterbrain – all kinds of crazy, demented stuff is thrown in, in just the right quantity. Full on Aussie madness! Another magical track! #06: Hex this! This kinda starts out like a boring, homogeneous euro-dance track… Well, the singing bit at least… But only for a short while…And only if you ignore the bass… But then we are treated to some 303’s, more psychedelia and notable lack of voice samples… What gives? This track is kinda boring compared to the majority… But they can’t all be killers, right? Average track. #07: Back on track again, with Possessed… Again, focus is on melodies and we’re on the lighter side of the mood scale, despite the evil samples… We even hear Darth Vader here “I find you lack of faith disturbing” + “If you only knew the power of the dark side”… Ha ha – this must be a piss take on some of the pre-2000 stuff that used these samples… As in most of the tracks, the very distinctive acid twirls are very much present here – The Scatterbrain trademark. I really like that… This track is good! #08: Full on from the get-go, this gem quickly launches into more mental institution references, with the classic One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest sample “If that's what's being crazy is, then I'm senseless, out of it, gone-down-the-road, wacko” spoken by mr. cool: Jack Nicholson…And there are loads more samples from that great movie in this track… This is a fast paced, acid-driven, no questions asked, neo full-on track! So simple, so magical! Play this one loud! Great track! #09: Aaargh, there’s a short melody that really annoys me in the beginning of this track! Fortunately it buggers off soon enough… Another fast paced, hard hitting track. The kick drums are almost comical in some places, but generally they work. Huge melodic parts in the middle, brutally erupted by the notorious acid-madness… And remember, government is not the solution to our problem – government IS the problem! Damn, this is good! I’ll hog this buck! Cool track! #10: So you’re expecting a mellowed out chill-track to digest the madness of Scatterbrain? Hah, I laugh at your request… No way, the madness continues… Though this is an atmospheric track… Very sharp, picking acid lines, that hits you hard… It’s deeply intoxicating, taking you to far away places. Smashing track! Holy crap, what a ride… In the sampling-spirit of Scatterbrain, let me quote The Grateful Death: “What a long, strange trip it’s been”… But a truly amazing trip. The promotional text states that; “This is liquid trance genesis of a new order. Surfing the silicon waves of a sonic freedom. Saltwater engineered sound, full cream digital milk genetically enhanced organic grade audio.” I couldn’t have put it better… This is pure beauty… This is the shiznit! This is a HUGE album… A must for any trance aficionado. Believe me, you NEED to own this! Go get it right away! 9.5/10 Favorites: 1(!!), 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 DeathPosture External links: Digital Psionics: www.digitalpsionics.com Wirikuta Distribution: www.wirikuta.at (Soundclips available) Updated with formatting 3rd July 2006
