  3. Too bad this thread went totally apeshit. It had some interesting facts on old tunes.
  4. Yab-Yum – Nocturnal Emissions Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Yab-Yum (Switzerland) Title: Nocturnal Emissions Format: CD (digipack) Label: Peak Records (Switzerland) Cat. #: PR011 Distribution: Arabesque Date: December 2006 Track listing: 01. 07’41” Multiball 02. 07’04” Wou 03. 07’18” Labium 04. 08’42” Mind My Nipples 05. 07’21” Nocturnal Emissions 06. 07’53” Complaint 07. 07’32” Yodel 08. 08’17” Conjoint Twin Myslexia 09. 06’54” Disconnected 10. 07’48” Dr Ruthless .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/sb9z2 (all tracks!) Review: Swissmade precision psytrance After (what seems like) years of waiting and tons of internet hype, the debut album from Yab-Yum is finally a reality… Rooted deep in the Swiss Alps, Yab-Yum is the love-child of Swiss Peaksters Ajja S.F. Leu & Gaspard Besson. Since their first compilation track on Peaking In Tongues (Peak Records/2004) I’ve been a big fan of their raging mad psychedelia and I have followed the guys closely ever since… Every single track I’ve heard from their hands has been absolutely amazing and this is probably my most eagerly awaited debut album in 2006… Time to unleash those Nocturnal Emissions… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Multiball [147 BPM] We kick things into Yab-Yum mode with a smooth, subtle psytrance groover in the good old Peak tradition… This is the Mountain Dew of psytrance… Refreshing, misty, sweet, tasty and totally addictive… Squeaky synths, irregular rhythms, spiralling acid and wiggle-your-ass qualities… Not an epic smash, but good old-fashioned wholesome psy… Burp! #02: Wou [147 BPM] As with all Peak releases, we drift seamlessly into the next track – ensuring a smoother flow. On this opus, the guys dig out the old acid-machine and engage in some serious tweaking and knob-adjustment… Twirling, yet subtle acid-lines, alien sounds, driving psychedelic passages and nifty little melodies which are bubbling with life… Very shroomy and thus perfect for home listening despite the hefty BPM count. Nice! #03: Labium [147 BPM] The trip takes on a broader spectre next, and the beats are sharper, the acid-lines more dominant and the more dancefloor-orientated… The digital tribalism works like a charm and I really like the balance between the rich percussion and the seemingly enormous amount of acid… Smoky, rhythm-intense psytrance… Sweet! #04: Mind My Nipples [148 BPM] “Look, if I must change my ways at least let me do it my way – with technology. It’s time we tried my latest invention, the Mind Manipulation-O-Matic. It extracts unwanted thoughts and desires. I haven't tested it yet, but it should be perfectly safe. Just a bit of harmless brain alteration, that's all!” As the BPM count rises, the mood gets darker… This is the deepest, murkiest track thus far – without ever crossing over into boring, pretentious ‘darkpsy’. The acid is still flowing freely, the bass is kicking steadily and most important – the classic humorous Yab-Yum touch is all over the place. It’s a good laugh as much as it’s a trip-tool and a dancefloor bombshell. Awesome! #05: Nocturnal Emissions [146 BPM] “Good old-fashioned LSD in original and minty fresh flavours…You know, today’s world is almost frightingly complex. That’s why I use good old-fashioned LSD […] There’s a whole world inside my head underneath your spore!” The title track carries on in a very shroomy fashion with even crazier pitch-bends and even more deranged acid-leads… Think Derango meets Drumatik vs. Phyx – or something to that extend. Acid-soaked, funny and immensely trippy psychedelic trance… I’m totally digging it! =) #06: Complaint [148 BPM] “This is just a little something to keep you compliant. The usual dose for this sort of thing is two, three hundred milligrams, but I think with a big, strapping hybrid like yourself… Take it up to a couple of thousand!” After a sample from Blade: Trinity this track catapults us right into space with razorsharp synths, galloping rhythms and of course more flaring acid… The rhythm structure is interesting, the breakdown will send shock-waves thru the trancefloors and basically this track is all about havin’ it large (!)… Pure dancefloor napalm. Wikkid! #07: Yodel [150 BPM] And this is where it gets REALLY hardcore… The bassline is galloping away at an incredible, almost incomprehensible pace… But unlike dark, horror-trance this actually maintains a trippy edge making it somewhat enjoyable… Thumbs up for the very atmospheric, spooky and otherworldly atmosphere created here… But overall this is just too fast and too cluttering for my liking. Yikes! #08: Conjoint Twin Myslexia [148 BPM] “What I really wanna say is... Well, this may sound odd coming from a woman with a foetus sticking out of her head, but... You're all a bunch of freaks!” Remember that South Park episode with the woman with the dead foetus on her face? Conjoint twin myslexia is a rare medical condition which involves one half of Siamese twins passing away at birth, thus permanently attaching the corpse to the other one's head – and now it’s passed down in the psytrance annals as a wicked Yab-Yum track too… This is still a very fast track, though luckily not as hectic as the previous one… The marching rhythms are seasoned with a ton of oddball quirks, twists, turns and general mayhem… Pretty good track, though the track has way too many South Park samples… Something that got boring real fast back when PsySex first did it back in 2000. Ah well, several passages of this track still kicks ass! #09: Disconnected [150 BPM] “Thinking can be beautiful. Thinking can be profound, pure, clever, essence, so well articulated as to astound. Yet we can remember that we are not these ideas. We do not possess them, and they need not possess us!” The last upbeat track is another raging-fast, relentless destroyer… It starts off kinda mellow, but soon evolves into a proper beast… But this time it works much better for me – I’m totally soaked in by this epic blast riddled with Taoism… It makes for a very interesting mix and this is one of the few 150 BPM tracks I thoroughly enjoy… Cool! And remember kids… We are not God! #10: Dr Ruthless [80 BPM] Last track usually means freestyle – and this is no exception. This is Gasp & Ajja messing around in their studio stoned out of their minds… Weird, eerie and somewhat evil dub… Grotesque, murky and totally deep… Kinda like that sound you have inside your head whilst tripping your nuts off… Spooky spiritualism… Very interesting, trippy and unique - and a fine way to end the album. In my book Peak Records equals quality. I’ve liked every single release from these Swiss nutters. And this 12th release, the debut album from Yab-Yum, is another quality release. My expectations prior this were huge – and for the most part they were met. Flow wise this album works like a charm – it’s one continuous, slightly mixed trip which ensures a safe passage from start to finish. There are not bad tracks and lots of really great, stand-out tracks. Gaspard & Ajja are still my heroes. With that being said, I must also say that a few of the tracks weren’t as amazing as I’d hoped for… Especially some of the faster ones, but I’m kinda picky when it comes to psytrance above the 150 BPM mark. I just had an Utopian dream, that maybe every single track would make me cream my pants. That wasn’t quite the case here – but we got close and for that I’m grateful. The cover art is lovely as always with Peak Records – and Yab-Yum’s humorous take on psytrance shines thru nicely on the front cover with the guys trapped in their laptops. All in all, this is yet another solid Peak release – well up to par with the back catalogue. Recommended to anyone who’ve ever fell in love with a Yab-Yum track… I know we’re loads scattered around the world… We’re the Yab-Yum Army – and it’s gonna take a nation of millions to stop us! 7. #09: Fitalic & Jaan – Voice Of Istanbul [130 BPM] off Trash Art (Tribal Vision 2006) Robin Fitter is back for round two – in which he’s joined by his alter ego Jaan. And the man’s still got it… Holy baloney, this is tribal beast of a track… Percussion rich, driving progressive trance that seems much faster than the BPM indicates… The reverb is tweaked in a really interesting way and the general feel I get from this track is pure enjoyment… It fuses trance, techno and progressive into a deep, unholy mix… A cracking, gargantuan underground track! Brilliant!
  8. You're getting me all worked up now. Happy new year gift!

  11. V/A – Trash Art Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: Trash Art Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Tribal Vision (Czech Republic) Cat. #: TVRCD012 Distribution: Psyshop.net Date: 18 December 2006 Track listing: 01. 07’39” Roman Rai – Disco On The Mothership 02. 06’50” Nick Hogendoorn & Eelke Kleijn – Rabbit Whole 03. 07’30” Fitalic – Atomic Atmosphere (Thomas Penton Remix) 04. 06’54” Brisker & Magitman – Single Shot 05. 07’36” Tegma – David’s Song 06. 08’25” Duca – Dirty Mind 07. 07’01” Phony Orphants – Monkey Business 08. 09’05” Flowjob – Run Baby Run (Antix Remix) 09. 09’14” Fitalic & Jaan – Voice Of Istanbul 10. 08’40” Jaïa & Silicon Sound aka. Even 11 – Like This .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/y6dn3m (all tracks!) Review: World-class tech-clash… Czech label Tribal Vision seems to be on a trance mission to rid the world of sub par progressive trance… With one exception (the boring Sonic Cube album), everything released here has been absolute ace – and the quest continues on this, their 12th physical CD release… Once again DJ Slater is in charge and most of us have pretty much come to trust his taste blindly… Let’s check out what rocks his world at the moment… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Roman Rai – Disco On The Mothership [130 BPM] Roman Horinek from the Czech capital Prague has found his musical expression lingering somewhere between fluffy, commercial club trance and dirty, electro-ridden progressive trance… I much prefer the latter, but Roman has a way of charming everyone even when his music is clubby… And that’s also the case here… This is a housy little groover – rich in disco flavour and totally uplifting… Pretty nice, but could have used a little unpredictability… #02: Nick Hogendoorn & Eelke Kleijn – Rabbit Whole [129 BPM] Dutch producers Eelke Kleijn & Nick Hogendoorn team up on this electro-soaked, funky piece of progressive house… The production is über-tight and the subtle-bassline has that lovely underground vibe that I really like… Totally danceable, without being a full-blown hit… Tasty though! #03: Fitalic – Atomic Atmosphere (Thomas Penton Remix) [130 BPM] Atomic Atmosphere was one of the most predominant (and coolest) tracks off Robin Fitter’s 2006 album on Tribal Vision of same name… And now, here’s the re-interpretation by US producer Thomas Penton – and he managed to make an already very cool track even cooler. The original was massive, tight and un-fluffy – and this remix adds to that on all fronts… The reverbs are stretched, the bass refined and the build-up + break kicks even more proggy ass now… A superb remix to an already great original! Wonderful! #04: Brisker & Magitman – Single Shot [130 BPM] I’ve only heard a couple of tracks from the Israeli duo Brisker & Magitman (Rami Brisker & Igal Magitman) but those have been pretty nice… And so is this filthy beast! This is nitty-gritty, unpolished progressive trance which borders on both tech-trance and electro… I like the phat rhythm work, the tooth-grinding FX and the deeeeeep, bouncy bassline… A lovely track that will have everyone on the dancefloor bouncing all around! #05: Tegma – David’s Song [130 BPM] Swedish superstar duo Tegma (Omar Chelly & Jason Orfanidis) never seize to impress me with their vast genre-bending talent. Especially their two latest albums, and in particularly Around The World In 80 Minutes (Tribal Vision 2006) are among the best progressive cross-over albums in recent years. This track suits the theme of this compilation perfectly… This is raw, unfiltered progressive trance with more than a few nods to tech-house and electro… The seemingly simple lead works on more than one level, and with some subtle knob-adjustment the guys manage to make this into a very pleasant experience… Totally trippy cross-over trance! Stellar! #06: Duca – Dirty Mind [126 BPM] Duca is Dusan Sekić from Serbia who has released a full album + a bunch of compilation tracks under his Anax alias. His track on PsyBooty’s 2006 compilation ServeEm2wice had it qualities, but wasn’t as interesting as his Anax input… But that’s all changed now – this is a fine piece of crossover trance… As the title so cleverly hints, this is diRRty – dirty as in funkalicous, bubbly, serrated and totally scrumptious! Trance meets progressive meets house meets tech… Head-bopping, foot tapping, body moving trance music. I’m loving it! #07: Phony Orphants – Monkey Business [128 BPM] Danish producers Mikkel Dahlgaard (Emok) & Jeppe Ørnkilde released their second album [it'cetra] on Iboga Records last year – a potent album which really pushed the boundaries of progressive trance. Despite a remix for Antix, the guys haven’t really released anything as P.O. for a long time. I guess they’ve been focussing on their projects (Emok & Mondayz Millionaires). Anyway, with this track they’re somewhat back in the loop. I don’t know quite what to make of this – on one hand it’s sleek, plush progressive trance with great production and a slick sound. On the other hand, there’s not really anything that makes me jump up and down… So, for home listening or as a DJ transition tool this is ace. For partying it’s less good. #08: Flowjob – Run Baby Run (Antix Remix) [130 BPM] The debut album Support Normality (Iboga Records 2006) by Danish producers Joakim Hjorne & Mads Tinggaard didn’t really fare too well with me… It had a couple of nice tracks, but as a whole I was bored most of the time… One of the tracks that did bode will with me was the epic smash opener Run Baby Run. On this compilation we get a remix from kiwi duo Antix (Barton & Hayden Strom). Recently I’ve had a somewhat ambivalent feeling towards their output which has often been too fluffy for my taste – and large parts of this track suffers under that too… With that being said, let me also stress that this remix sure has some qualities – and especially the last half does justice to the epic original. But as a whole, I like the original over this. #09: Fitalic & Jaan – Voice Of Istanbul [130 BPM] Robin Fitter is back for round two – in which he’s joined by his alter ego Jaan. Brilliant! #10: Jaïa & Silicon Sound aka. Even 11 – Like This [130 BPM] Even 11 is a new project by French psy-prog morning masters Jaïa (Yannis Kamarinos) and Silicon Sound (Johannes Regnier). Much like their Altitudes project, this is highly experimental, genre-bending stuff… This is the freestyle track which fuses house, electro, progressive trance and more obscure forms of electronica… And it works like a charm! This is a highly original track which is destined to turn a few heads… Very funky stuff which works for both dancing and sofa trancing. Sweet! Tribal Vision strikes gold once again! This, their 12th CD release, is another very varied, versatile collection of fine music… Only a few of the tracks here, didn’t really agree with me – and that was mainly because of their fluffy nature… But as a whole, this is one heck of a compilation with a very high percentage of stand-out tracks. Heck, just take a look at my indication of fav’e tracks below. That’s pretty damn impressive! Slater, you know your shit! Kudos for that! The murky cover art by Quapim (Lukas Opekar) fits the overall theme of the compilation, and once again we get an informative booklet + a Case Logic-friendly DJ-slip. Value for money if there ever was value for money! Another Tribal Vision release that comes highly recommended by me. An essential purchase for any fan of tech-fused, electro-ridden, house-inspired progressive trance. Enjoy! 14. V/A – Relaxed Journeys Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: Relaxed Journeys Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Chill Tribe Records (2006) Cat. #: CTRCD02 Distribution: Arabesque Date: September 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’28” Altitudes – Altitude II 02. 08’43” Nada – Earthgarden (Jong Remix) 03. 09’09” Adham Shaikh - Indu 04. 07’34” Digitalis - Noodles 05. 09’09” Jong – Unexplored Depths 06. 07’51” Makyo – Nothing Is Real (Sensual Mix) 07. 08’01” Solar Quest – Tokers Dream (Remix) 08. 08’22” EldarLife – Gone Gong 09. 04’00” Circular - Ambulo 10. 08’36” Saafi Brothers - Multiverse .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/swm8a (all tracks!) Review: Shanti chill… From Norway comes the second release on Chill Tribe Records. The brainchild of collector, DJ, reviewer, webmaster and Discogs-persona PKS (Per Kristian Slagsvold). The seminal release Quality Relaxation catapulted onto the scene in 2005 and still holds up as a very lush chill-out compilation. One of the best released in 2005. For the follow-up, PKS has outdone himself in lining up some of the biggest, most sought-after chill-out producers. The track list is absolutely impressive. Let’s begin the journey. Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Altitudes – Altitude II “Childhood and adolescence, well everything, is about preparing for life that was gonna start later. And I suddenly realised that life wasn’t gonna start later. That it had, you know, it starts at dot and happens all the time, and at any point you can grasp the range and guiding your own destiny!” Altitudes was a project started for the first Chill Tribe Records compilation Quality Relaxation. Yannis Kamarinos (Jaïa) & Gabriel Masurel (Blue Planet Corporation) conjured up a highly experimental tune. Upon their return, they’re joined by French producer Johannes Regnier (Silicon Sound) forming what can only be described as a French super-trio. The track starts with a quote by legendary Pink Floyd member Roger Waters – talking about the inspiration for the track Time off the album The Dark Side Of The Moon. This track soon morphs into a psychedelic, highly melodic piece of percussion-rich tribal ambient… Floating grooves, spiralling melodies and soothing soundscapes… Not as unconventional as the first Altitudes track, but still very, very good… The talks about an upcoming Altitudes album makes me smile. Can’t wait for that to happen. #02: Nada – Earthgarden (Jong Remix) The now classic chill-out track Earthgarden was released 3 years ago by UK duo Nada (Humphrey Bacchus & Russel Davies). Messing with a classic is always risky business, but French producer Jong (Jonathan Garnier) takes on the challenge… And succeeds! The main melodic leads from the original are still a vital part of the track which has been spiced up with an urban, inner-city serrated edge… I’m still enchanted by the beautiful instrumentation here – and the clash between classic organic ethno-chill and upfront digital urban downbeat is refreshing. Lovely track! #03: Adham Shaikh – Indu Next up is Canadian composer, producer and sound designer Adham Shaikh. A very productive producer with releases on all the major ambient labels… This track is the first ‘epic’ one – meaning that it has the best flow and direction thus far… Every little detail is part of a bigger scheme, ultimately resulting in a very tightly-knit downbeat track… Style wise we’re heavily soaked in native Asian music… Hindi singing and chanting (by Gemma Luna), tribal percussion and a heavy dose of lush synth exploration added to the mix to ensure a safe passage. Best track thus far. Simply amazing! #04: Digitalis – Noodles Digitalis is one of many aliases of tai chi disciple Sebastian James Taylor (Shakta, Somaton, Kaya Project, etc.) And on this track we get the experimentation that we missed out on in the Altitudes track… This is a wobbly, experimental piece of musical knit-work… Lo-fi, pitched-down EDM with heavy pinches of ambient and chill-out… And sadly that sounds better in writing that it does in real life. Sure, there are interesting passages and bits & pieces here… But as a whole, this seems too fragmented and too incoherent to retain my attention. Not bad, but not that great either. #05: Jong – Unexplored Depths French producer Jonathan Garnier returns with one of his own productions here… And what a positive surprise from this newcomer. This is highly spiritual, ethno-tribal world music… Lush, plush and really sexy. The Hindi singing is neat and the instrumentation is spot-on. A lovely piece of floating, chilled downbeat with more than a few psychedelic influences… Sweet! #06: Makyo – Nothing Is Real (Sensual Mix) US-born, Japan-based producer and label boss Giovanni Fazio (Makyo) is another chill-out legend. This track was already released in another mix, but this one is the sensual one (as the title suggests, duh!). What we get here is less complicated, pure downbeat music… Floating ambient soundscapes forged by an array of synths and dreamy pads… The female vox are nice and subtle, but doesn’t really lift the track into higher dimension. The production is impressive, but as a whole this track seems a tad on the trivial side. #07: Solar Quest – Tokers Dream (Remix) “Cosmic vibration!” Solar Quest (George Fleming-Saunders) is another ambient (and acid-techno!) veteran with about a gazillion releases under his belt… But this is pure, Indian-flavoured ambient dub – absolutely soaked in sitars, tablas, gongs and whistles…Very enchanting and very mellow. This is the kind of music that goes well with chillums, incense and vivid imaginations. Turn in, tune on and cop out! Shanti-shanti! =) #08: EldarLife – Gone Gong “I separated the bedrooms, so that I had a separate bedroom and I ended up fitting locks on the door. The only way I could actually get a good night’s sleep or have any sense of ease if you will or relax to get four or five hours sleep, was to be able to make sure that door was locked!” EldarLife is the chill-out outfit of Norwegian producer Eldar Von Essen (in PhasePhour) who also had a very nice track on the first Chill Tribe Records compilation. This track has a mystic aura surrounding it – deep, dark and pulsating ambient music which asks more questions than it answer… Very enthralling and deeply mesmerizing. Very original and very, very cool. #09: Circular – Ambulo Circular is another Norwegian act. This time a duo who released their first album in 1997. I’ve never heard of them before, but that’s the joy of having a highly knowledgeable ambient connoisseur such as PKS sharing his personal favourites. This is the oddball track this time around – running for only 4 minutes, this is glitchy, yet minimal, techno-ambient without beats… Experimental, emotional, fragmented. A sound collage with a sharp contrasts. Very interesting, but works more as a transition tool than as an individual track. #10: Saafi Brothers – Multiverse The closing track is by the Saafi Brothers (Michael Kohlbecker & Gabriel Le Mar) – another legendary chill-out act… And what an epic chill tour de force this track is. This is pure, unfiltered, beatless ambient forged by the psychedelic wallas themselves. Organic, floating, dreamy soundscapes morphing from the deepest recesses of space… This track will be your companion into the spirit realm… It’s beautiful. Just as Quality Relaxation was, this compilation is a very impressive collection of fine tracks within the downbeat genre… We get both percussion-rich melodic tunes and virtually beatless floating ambient here… The flow is better this time round, enhancing the ever so important journey feeling. The quality level is impressive and I like the vast majority of the tracks here. There are no bad tracks here, and the few less-brilliant tracks are easily outweighed by the many brilliant tracks. PKS surely knows his music and once again he has managed to collect and compile one hell of selection of tracks. The very nice – and fat - booklet with info on all the artists is just the icing on the already mouth-watering chill cake. A no-brainer purchase for any fan of eclectic, smooth downbeat music. Enjoy!
