Frantic Noise - The Nordland Orchestra Artist: Various Title: The Nordland Orchestra Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Dark Prisma Records (Argentina) Cat. #: DPR001 Distribution: Beatspace Date: August 2006 Track listing: 01. 01’06” Frantic Noise – Fasten Your Diapers 02. 06’50” Frantic Noise vs. Collapse - Skyhack 03. 06’54” Frantic Noise – Spine Screwer 04. 07’44” Frantic Noise & Collapse – Ghost Call 05. 07’16” Frantic Noise – The Glow 06. 07’11” Megalopsy – Shit Winds 07. 06’29” Frantic Noise & Collapse – Psy Fiction 08. 07’02” Frantic Noise – The Boogieman Theme 09. 06’53” Frantic Noise & Audiopathik – Lokutus Welcome 10. 06’43” Shmaglers – Helioboy 11. 06’44” Frantic Noise & Pragmatix – Done For Good Review: Straight outta Buenes Aires… A crazy MF named z1P! In 2005 Argentinean labels Transition Records and Dark Prisma Records teamed up on releasing Amalgama which was the ‘primer compilado de psytrance argentino’ - The very first psytrance compilation from Argentina! And what a pleasant experience that was. I was really surprised by the the sheer quality level of those Argentinean underground producers. Sure, Megalopsy had wow’ed me before with their debut album The Abstract Machine, (Trishula Records 2005) but this new talent pool really knew their way around a studio and I was especially impressed by the level of experimentation and by the fact that it wasn’t just another boring, formulated full-on compilation… It was really good, versatile stuff within the darker realms of psytrance! Frantic Noise is z1P (Matías Benamo) from Megalopsy’s solo project and on this, his debut album, he’s joined by a bunch of his mates from and around Argentina… Let’s find out what they came up with. Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Frantic Noise – Fasten Your Diapers As legend has it, we kick things in gear with an intro track… A sonic excursion of Megalopsy’esque dimensions setting the pace for what’s about to go down… In history! #02: Frantic Noise vs. Collapse – Skyhack [146 BPM] “This is just in. A few moments ago. We don’t if something happened. Another explosion or if the building was so weakened. It just collapsed!” z1P is joined by P. Cufre and the mould has been broken… This is flaring, morphing psytrance designed to make you wiggle your ass on the dancefloor… Straight up, well-produced, driving psytrance with enough little twists, turns and quirks to ensure full attention form the lister… The radio-flicking halfway thru is an added bonus along with the well-placed haunting screams… And if that wasn’t enough, the bassline from hell ensures maximum pleasure! Awesome track! #03: Frantic Noise – Spine Screwer [145 BPM] This track was supposedly one of the first recorded for the album, but it sound super fresh… After some initial pounding and twirling melodies, the track really unleashed halfway thru… It’s driving psytrance with an unreal amount of pure acid sprinkled around… Multi-climactic psytrance when it’s best! The intensity level is unsurpassed, the layering is just amazing and I dare anyone ‘not to be’ completely soaked in by this acid-ridden monster of epic proportions… Lovely track! #04: Frantic Noise & Collapse – Ghost Call [145 BPM] Again Matías is joined by P. Cufre, and as the title suggests we’re now shifting towards darker, more evil horror trance… But it’s not boring, 165 BPM grindcore psy as some of the Russian labels are spewing out… This is well-crafted, eclectic night time psytrance with such appeal and stamina that I can’t help but be very, very impressed… So hypnotizing, so mesmerizing, yet so subtle… Hell yeah, this rocks! #05: Frantic Noise – The Glow [146 BPM] And here’s another piece of hard-hitting, spirit-lifting, soul-cleansing, trip-inducing, well-crafted nocturnal psytrance… This is so unbelievably full-on that it would make half the population of Israeli neo full-on producers run up a tree… Seriously! This is incredibly dense, action-packed, EPO-doped, propane-injected psytrance with not even a hint of cheese… A real party stomper which has undoubtedly caused havoc on the trance floors across the globe this summer… It’s extremely ripe! #06: Megalopsy – Shit Winds [145 BPM] “Mission control, this is commander Bubbles…” Next up is a new track from the hands of those who started the Argentinean psytrance revolution: Megalopsy (Matías Benamo & Nicolas Di Bernardo). And this track really goes to show just how talented these guys are – this is extremely versatile psytrance jam-packed with a gazillion funny little quirks, turns, twists, detours, frills and thrills… Kinda like Quasar or a drugged up version of Drumatik… Full-power uplifting psytrance with subtle melodies and all kinds of twisted stuff which will make you dance, laugh and gaze… Sweet! #07: Frantic Noise & Collapse – Psy Fiction [146 BPM] The last Collapse collaboration is another action-packed adventure into maximal psytrance… Again the progression level is downright impressive and just how the guys managed to make 146 BPM psytrance sound this funky I will never know… But I do know that this is as groovy as it gets in these altitudes… The acid is unleashed again, but it’s in such a subtle way that it never gets tedious… Pure, unfiltered full-on psytrance with more than just a few surprises in store… Kick-ass! #08: Frantic Noise – The Boogieman Theme [147 BPM] This one is more straight-forward night trance… Don’t get me wrong, this is Frantic Noise after all so it’s still highly nurtured epic stuff, but this one didn’t have as much bite as some of the previous tracks did… Some of the passages sound just a little jaded compared to the rest… The funny thing is, that this would be a stand-out track on a compilation… But on this album, the stand-out tracks are rubbing shoulder against shoulder… Still an ace track though! #09: Frantic Noise & Audiopathik – Lokutus Welcome [148 BPM] Here’s a guest appearance from Mexico embodied by Gilbert Wendlandt and Alex Urias who’ve had a handful of tracks released on different labels… The track starts out with some really atmospheric instrumentation before the actual thrust begins… And by thrust, I mean serious thrust… As revealed by the BPM count this is the fastest track here and that fact does not go by unnoticed… But unlike other ‘darkpsy’ tracks, this one actually manages to stay interesting for the most part… The beastly, über-hard hitting passages goes down really well and it’s virtually impossible not to be overwhelmed by this… The bassline is a little blunt at times, but only for brief moments and generally this is another sure-fit hit! #10: Shmaglers – Helioboy [136 BPM] Shmaglers is Frantic Noise, Collapse, and Pragmatix in cahoots, and by dropping the BPM 12 beats the album takes a surprising turn… It still sounds very fresh though and just goes to show that these guys aren’t confined within a limited BPM range… The next track underlines that even more! The guitar work here is maybe a little over the top and prevents me from grading this as a stand-out, but it’s still an excellent track with plenty of crunch… Tasty! #11: Frantic Noise & Pragmatix – Done For Good [82 BPM] On the final track z1P is joined by Pragmatix (Jorge Uema) who’s also a member of Prismatix. As you might’ve guessed, this is experimental downbeat. But don’t think that this is chilled out – it’s very far from it. It still has that darkish touch to it, though this is confined in a more electro/dubby nature… Very unique and it’s fitting for coming down after the intensity of this amazing album. Holy smirks! This album beats the shit out of both the wonderful Megalopsy album The Abstract Machine and the lovely Amalgama compilation as the best thing ever to surface from the South African side of the Southern Hemisphere… That’s right, this is stellar stuff and there’s nothing even remotely close to a boring, predictable track here… The stand-out tracks are many and even the less good tracks are still pretty damn sweet! I’m very impressed and from where I’m sitting, the future of Argentinean psytrance looks very bright! Keep it up gauchos! The artwork by Daniel Igarza is eye candy – and the informative booklet is just the icing on the already delicious cake. Another reason why this album rocks! Fans of the first compilation and Megalopsy fans needs to own this, and fans of eclectic, experiemental psytrance should most definitely also look into it... Trust me, it’s worthy of a lot of attention... I’d even go as far as to call it an essential 2006 release... Enjoy! Favourites: 2(!), 3(!!), 4, 5(!), 6, 7, 9(!) Phyx – Kiss The Blade Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Phyx (South Africa) Title: Kiss The Blade Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Timecode Records (South Africa) Cat. #: TCCD017 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 6 October 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’25” The Initiation 02. 07’12” Conundrum 03. 06’39” Serotonine 04. 07’07” The Wall 05. 07’08” 7th Sword 06. 08’25” Soul Keeper 07. 07’57” Electromagnetic 08. 07’36” Rumours Of War 09. 07’35” Tribe Stream: http://tinyurl.com/qfz3y (all tracks!) Review: Phyxed acid… Ian Summs aka. Mr. Phyx himself has been a personal hero of mine ever since I stumbled across his work 3-4 years ago… His impressive back-catalogue of tracks always stood out on whichever compilation they were featured on… Ian knows his way around a studio and his consistently high quality level has made the Phyx moniker synonymous with stand-out tracks on many a compilation… His release frequency slowed down under the Phyx alias in recent years though, but his output continued in the elusive constellations Breathen (with his brother Joseph) and Twisted System (with Chris Hoy & Craig Hudson). All of which has been good, wholesome South African psytrance. Now the time has come to finally release the Phyx album and I’ve been excited ever since it was released. Let’s dig in. Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: The Initiation Starting out with a basic, heavily filtered kick this might seem like a simple tune at first… But after the initial kick & stomp intro, the track soon evolves into something more rewarding… The punch is dark, gritty and almost industrial-like, but as always with Phyx there’s more to it than just punch for the sake of punch… The marching rhythms have been carefully programmed to ensure maximum velocity and this dancefloor stomper will certainly work wonders on the dance floors. Especially the first half which is very heavy on the drums and bass, whilst the latter half has more of the traditional Phyx acid undertones…It doesn’t work as well for sofa trancing, but sometimes you just wanna get up and shake your ass right? This track is for those occasions… Lovely track! #02: Conundrum This one focuses less on the actual kick, but more on twirling, morphing melodies… There is always something lurking under the surface, slowing evolving before eventually revealing its true nature… I think I actually get the underlying hypnotizing nature of this track, but I’m somewhat turned off by some of the high-pitched, demented melodies during the middle and second parts of this track… Never been a big fan of those I’m afraid… #03: Serotonine “Pulse, perspiration” The next track changes direction again, and this is one is really a clash of styles with both feather-light uplifting melodies and irregular breakz & beats and a very regular bassline… The reverb FX give the track a sort of hardstyle edge, but I’m not sure how well it works here… Several passages seem a little too simple for my liking… Luckily we’re still dealing with Phyx here, so his frequent changes in pace and direction makes this track bearable… Still not a personal fav’e of mine though… #04: The Wall “I’m gonna have to go outside the wall… I know! First I have to do this.” But things are really picking up on the next track which is easily the best thus far… This alleged tribute to Pink Floyd is a staggering journey thru the finest in South African full-on psytrance… A carefully musical balance of driving, uplifting melodies and max-power acid-ridden dancefloor napalm… Not overly original, but yet oh so rewarding… I really dig the huuuuge reverb-soaked trance-pads which really fill out the entire sound spectre…. Wall-to-wall audio bliss! This track *works*! #05: 7th Sword And if the last track had huge acid-ridden passages, just wait until this one hits you… At first it’s pretty standard with the odd twirling melody here and a blunt kick there… But give it some time, and the real nature of the track will reveal itself… It changes from ‘almost boring’ into ‘almost amazing’… The progression in the track is unsurpassed on the album and after some hardcore morphing this track turns into an overwhelming acid-fest of gargantuan dimensions… Reminds me a little of some of Xatrik’s earlier work… Kissing this blade was an awesome experience! Brilliant! #06: Soul Keeper The rapid pace continues on the next stormer which is more closely rooted in the underground… It’s a bombardment of all kinds of electro-twirling melodies and sonic synth explorations. The acid is flowing freely again - just as Phyx did it back in the old days, and we’re now slowly exploring the more psychedelic aspects of his production talent… Yeah, this is another fine piece of Phyxed psytrance. #07: Electromagnetic “What's behind that wall, Kelvin? Huh? What was the incident? Electromagnetism - geologically unique. There was a leak. So now the charge builds up, and every time we push the button, it discharges it!” After some initial mutterings from Lost, this next track opens up a bag of neo full-on tricks… The first batch of rolling synth cords are somewhat predictable, but luckily Phyx has seasoned them with a heavy dose of psychedelic twists, turns and musical side-tracking… So it never gets dull, but on the other hand it’s not as impressive as the previous three tracks were… #08: Rumours Of War And here it is. What will undoubtedly be dubbed the ‘notorious distorted guitar track’. And yes, you’ve guessed it. I don’t like it! Not because it has those guitars which reminds me of The Chemical Crew, but because it has this pseudo industrial-slash-rock full-on sound which I’ve always had a hard time appreciating. It’s does nothing but annoy me. Fans of later Infected Mushroom albums will have a field day though. Suffice to say, I’m not one of those fans. #09: Tribe The final track also has some of the same element, though they are not nearly as predominant as the previous track… It’s a weird hybrid of fluffy full-on and heavily distorted basslines and marching kick rhythms… And sure enough, it’s experimental and doesn’t sound like anything else here, but it’s still way too unstructured and hectic for my tastes. Maybe I don’t get it? Well, after waiting for this album for almost 5 years I can’t help but feel somewhat disappointed by the limited number of really excellent tracks here… There are only 4 really great tracks here and in that regard Phyx’ debut album didn’t live up to my expectations. Maybe they were too high or maybe I just didn’t get some of the musical directions this album took… But it’s not all bad. Far from it actually. Those four stand-out tracks certainly are great and they underline just what a talented producer Phyx was and still is. Too bad I didn’t really dig on all his new ventures. To break it down, it goes like this: The first three tracks are so-so, the middle three tracks ROCK and the two tracks I don’t really like… The cover art is subtle and minimal and will not turn too many heads. So, all in all this was an average album with less awesome tracks than I’d hoped for. Timecode fans and fans of South African psytrance in general will not be disappointed though. Enjoy. Yeah, this album deserves more credit than it got... It was released in the midst of a minimal craze, but it sure has its moments... From the hardhitting techno intro tracks, to the lighter, more melodic pieces... Not a masterpiece, but nice nevertheless.

V/A - Musica Discordia Artist: Various Title: Musica Discordia Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Gi'iwa Productions (Australia) Cat. #: GPCD 002 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 25 August 2006 Track listing: 01. 06’31” Tarezen – Say Whot!? 02. 08’43” Hired Goonz – Sebastien’s Dildo 03. 06’28” Reality Pixie – Phloem Of TLSG 04. 08’30” Tamlin - Abstructality 05. 07’03” Spiritus – Billy’s Bootcamp 06. 05’53” Sattel Battle – Fuck It (Ex Uus Remix) 07. 06’17” Sattle Battle – Stupid Computer 08. 08’35” Hired Goonz - Seatangle 09. 07’58” Neuron Compost – La Forest Femme 10. 04’14” Alrune & Bæst - McGuyver 11. 07’54” ECT – Jolly’s Return .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/q99gj (all tracks!) Review: THE MUSICA DISCORDIA or, How I Found the Goddess EleKtroniKa and What I Did To Her When I Found Her. After more than two years hiatus, recuperation and refuge Australia’s Gi’iwa Productions is out with their 2nd release Musica Discordia. When Schizm was released back in the summer of 2004 it was received with rave reviews and a hype seldom seen with debut releases… And two years later it’s still as fresh and innovative as the day it was released and it remains one of my most played ‘unconformity’ CDs… Rather than milking the success and rushing the next release, Reece and the Gi’iwa gang decided to play the waiting game until they actually had enough great tracks fit for a proper second release… Now let’s find out if that investment in time paid off… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Tarezen – Say Whot!? [150 BPM] “If any of my parts or circuits will help, I’ll gladly donate them. Circuits, what are you, some kind of robot? Of course not, hahaha, it’s just an expression… A robot expression!” Tarezen is Gonzalo Laserna in cahoots with Eki Jokisalo (Sienis) and they break the mould with a subtle piece of crossover frying pan trance… And just how they managed to make 150 BPM music sound so subtle and chilled, I’ll never understand… But it’s true – this is actually pretty laid back, but still extremely complex musica… It’s not quite trance, it’s not quite IDM… It just is! Psychedelic to the core and deeply unique. Wonderful! #02: Hired Goonz – Sebastien’s Dildo [145 BPM] Hired goon #1 is Reece Stockhausen (Neuron Compost) and #2 is Petalien, both from Brisbane, Australia… What we get here is a sonic excursion into future polka, space jazz and fungus funk… It’s as much a crossover experiment as it’s an electroniKa trip tool… This is what Shpongle would sound like played backwards! Wonderfully crafted and totally inimitable! #03: Reality Pixie – Phloem Of TLSG [148 BPM] “Ladies and gentlemen: The Teeny Little Super Guy!” Straight from the underground comes a tribute track to TLSG from Sesame Street. In a striking contrast between super-psychedelic acid-lines and demented-slash-uplifting morning melodies, the whole thing boils down to one thing: Multi layered, suomisoundi flavoured Babylonian mayhem of epic proportions… Intelligently composed by native Australian Darren Smith… Morning glory! #04: Tamlin – Abstructality [143 BPM] The next track by the Tamlins has the distinct suomistyge bouncy bass heavily filtered into all kinds of weird-as-fuck layers, naïve melodies, demented pads and so forth… As with Tamlin’s previous work, this is definitely not for the faint-hearted and precaution is advised when listening to this… The last half of the track is simply too complex for me to fully enjoy it in a sober state… Most likely track to be deemed illegal – ever! #05: Spiritus – Billy’s Bootcamp [147 BPM] Spiritus is Teemu Niemi from Finland, but actually the previous track was more suomisoundi than this one… Rest assured though, that this is still some very odd, vodka-soaked muzak – especially the first half. Halfway thru the track changes character into a more hard-hitting trance style… And the latter is definitely the best. The classic sample from Barabas & OD1’s classic hardhouse track Ghettoblaster fits *just* right… #06: Sattel Battle – Fuck It (Ex Uus Remix) [148 BPM] “This is the sound that blows your mind!” Sattel Battle is Elad Weinberg from Israel – perhaps better known under his Tsabeat moniker. His work stretches from brain-numbing Joyrex'esque drill&bass to über-dark terror-trance… All of which I’ve enjoyed thoroughly, and this track is no exception… The remixer is fellow country man Ilja Zelkovsky who released his debut album No Controlling on 6-Dimension Sound earlier this year… And holy fuck, I can’t believe what amazing sounds these guys are able to create… This is easily the most goan track thus far and it’s absolutely soaked in twirling melodies reminiscent of recent Ka-Sol material… Deeply psychedelic and totally maximal goa trance… Awesome! #07: Sattle Battle – Stupid Computer [145 BPM] “Let’s go techno!” The next Elad Weinberg track is more reminiscent of the spugadelic style he sported on the Schizm compilation two years ago… Groove-meister sauna-trance drenched in acid-funk, staccato-groove and wacked-out psychedelia… The electro touch and the analogue synths add even more flavour to the mix and makes people dance, scream and sweat bullets… A fine, wholesome track! #08: Hired Goonz – Seatangle [144 BPM] The goons are back for an encore – a noisy break core kind of encore to be more precise! We’re brushing on extremely demented IDM-like music here with an influx of psychedelic elements thrown in just to freak you out… The rapid changes in pace and direction will leave you with your mouth wide open wondering exactly what the fuck just hit you!? … This is pure, unfiltered alien music that I have yet to fully grasp, but there’s something indescribably appealing about it… #09: Neuron Compost – La Forest Femme [144 BPM] Neuron Compost is Gi’iwa big cheese Reece Stockhausen’s solo project… His two tracks on Schizm really catapulted me into space with their perfectly balanced mix of melodic trance and oddball psychedelia… And yes, this is another extremely versatile piece of electronic music… The sound spectre is absolutely jam-packed with all kinds of unnatural audio bits and pieces. Wrestle, mangled, digested, spit up and sewn back together by good old Reece… It’s somewhat confusing and hectic, but at the same time it makes perfect sense… Bound to last 3-400 listens before you’ve noticed all the tiny details… Absolutely adorable! #10: Alrune & Bæst – McGuyver [147 BPM] “It has to do with freedom… Crack head! … You know there is a kind of a trip I’ve been toying with… Take it now!” Next up is a collaboration between two Danish madmen. Rune Ranthe burst onto the scene with a bang with his looney tune on Schizm. The liner notes don’t reveal the true identity behind the Bæst moniker, so I can’t really supply any additional info on him… What I can say though, is that ‘bæst’ is Danish for ‘beast’. And that leads me nicely into describing the essence of this track which is a little beast in its own right… Highly diverse, action-packed oddball trance that’s bursting with joy and enough energy to go around thrice… Spankafracioulicious! #11: ECT – Jolly’s Return [138 BPM] “Everything is perfectly alright now, we are fine. Wee are all fine here now. Thank you. How are you?” ECT is Leigh Griffiths from the UK who’ve been in the biz since the early Phantasm days almost ten years ago and this track sends a nostalgic nod back to the b-side of his first ever released EP. In recent years his output has been limited, though his skills are still intact… This is the most ‘chilled’ track here, but obviously not chilled as you might have expected… This is balanced electronica with the emphasis on morphing buzzing sounds tangled up in jazzy bridges, flaring acid lines and a steady beat… Very hard to describe really and equally hard to comprehend. Maybe I’ll have it fully digested some day, but for now it’s a mysterious aeon flux to me… Like Schizm did two years ago, this compilation knocked me right off my feet… It’s such a diverse style-clash crossover bonanza that words don’t really do it justice. After all writing about music is like dancing about architecture… Why this lengthy review then, one might ask? Well, that’s what I do, and this piece of plastic deserves some attention. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard this year, and if that wasn’t reason enough to check it out, just wait until it grabs you by the balls and drags you around a musical spectre wider than you thought possible… The classy cover art adds to the overall very full experience sparked by this release… This is - in the immortal words of Huckleberry Finn - something else! Comes highly recommended. But beware. If you confront it with imperfect courage it might utterly annihilate your soul… Some of the tracks have not yet fully sunken in with me, and I’m not sure if they ever will… Luckily those tracks are scarce, and I really dig the vast majority of audio wizardry presented on this unique compilation. Do yourself a favour, and hunt this one down. It’s totally worth it, if not only to broaden your musical horizons. Enjoy!
