  2. V/A – Psy Stories 2 Artist: Various Title: Psy Stories 2 (Parvati Records Advisory: Explicit Psychedelic) Format: CD (digipack) Label: Parvati Records (Denmark) Cat. #: PRVCD12 Distribution: Wirikuta Date: 01 June 2006 Track listing: 01. 07’51” Psilo Cowboys – Sneaky Vibes 02. 09’18” Derango - Oscilla 03. 09’16” Hokus Pokus – Rock On 04. 07’25” Red Eye Jedi – RP5 05. 08’04” Encephalopaticys – Intellectual Homons 06. 07’38” Galaxy Madness – Parvati Cream 07. 07’41” Atriohm – No Name Channels 08. 07’57” Phonic Request & Akhoa – Bee People Abduction 09. 07’45” Kindzadza & Kaliflower – Viva Tempo 10. 06’57” Tsabeat - Magletcha Review: Gob smacking trip tales pt. 2 Danish power house label Parvati Records is out with their 12th release following the brilliant debut album Mad Different Methods from Naked Tourist - which was released in January 2006. The first Psy Stories compilation was released in October 2005 – and what a release that was! It’s still rated as the BEST Parvati release in my book, so when it turned out to be a running series I was extremely ecstatic… When I saw the track list, there was no turning back – I creamed my pants! After I washed them, I received the CD, put it on and creamed them again… So now I’m wearing rubber undies writing this… Just in case… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Psilo Cowboys – Sneaky Vibes [149 BPM] “He’s been injected with an opium overdose. Couldn’t move or feel much of anything! … What’s your name? My name is ‘very fucking confused’, what’s your name? What’s going on here?” Psilo Cowboys is an ancient Danish project by Roelike Jahbo (Jahbo/Meteloids/etc) and Thy Trung (Mussy Moody). This constellation hasn’t released anything since their track on the very first Parvati compilation First Step released five years ago! Naturally the sound has matured a great deal since then, and especially Jahbo has been involved in some jaw-droppingly amazing stuff since then… Anyway, this track is just what I’d hoped for – absolutely fucking soaked in twirling acid-lines, fragmented rhythm pads and several other trip tools… The Saw samples work really well here, and generally this is a brilliant tune… Great start! #02: Derango – Oscilla [147 BPM] Swedish studio enigmas Jens Eriksson & Ola Eriksson released their absolutely amazing debut album TuMuLT on Inpsyde Media in the fall of 2005 – and their track on the 2006 Sanaton Audio compilation Sanatonic Audio was just as immensely trippy and super psychedelic as the stuff on the album… This track is perhaps even more psychedeliKk – the acid-lines are tweaked beyond recognition and the demented melodies are literally radiating nuclear shock waves which will penetrate your brain and FUCK you up! And the best part is that it’s all made in such a subtle, noble fashion… It’s subtle psychedelia! Lovely! #03: Hokus Pokus – Rock On [148 BPM] Danish producers Anders Eskildsen & Christian Kaas Andersen (Dronebixie) had excellent tracks on both the first Psy Stories compilation and the above mentioned Sanatonic Audio. Talented guys for sure! As with their older tracks, this is subtle, held-back night trance that never gets too full-blown… That might seem like an odd observation with a track that runs @ 148 BPM, but it’s true nevertheless… This is bubbling, playful and rippling psytrance with a very special atmosphere – and in that regard this works better as a transition tool for DJs than as a dancefloor track… Not among the frontrunners on this compilation. It’s still pretty damn trippy though… #04: Red Eye Jedi – RP5 [150 BPM] Stephanus Smit from Denmark spelled his artist name Red i Jedeye on the first Psy Stories compilation – and now he spells it Red Eye Jedi. But despite the name change, Stephanus can still whoop up a mean old bassline in an old-school inspired psychedelic stomper of a track… The intensity level is very high here, and perhaps even a little too intense in the first part of the track… It evens out very nicely after the break down though – and the last half of this track is just pure tripalicious psychedelia… Kick-ass! #05: Encephalopaticys – Intellectual Homons [149 BPM] Behind the cryptic moniker Encephalopaticys is Vasko Velickovski from Macedonia. I’m only familiar with one of his previous tracks – the wonderful one on the 2005 Xilium Records compilation Over Identity… Just like that one, this is an extremely hard-hitting, fast-paced, über-dark track… The bassline is pounding away at an incredible speed and if it wasn’t for the surrounding FX it would have bored me to death… But this is Parvati Records after all, so luckily we’re treated to an influx of trippy FX, twists, turns, bleeps, bloops and tons of tweaked synth experimentation… It’s all fine and dandy, but somehow I still think this track is missing something… The X-factor is not present… It’s not a bad track at all – unfortunately it’s not as memorable as I’d hoped for either… But hey, it’s just because the competition is SO fierce on this compilation. This would easily have been a stand-out track on an average compilation. #06: Galaxy Madness – Parvati Cream [148 BPM] Galaxy Madness is Suguru Akita – an upcoming artist from Japan who had a track on the infamous Phenix compilation released by Phreex Network in late 2005. And trust me – all subtly is long gone now… This is 100% in-your-face, wall-to-wall maximum night trance… Simple at first, but soon evolves into a raging monster that devours everything in sight… Holy trout – this is so freakishly intense despite its often monotonous nature… Usually I would oppose against music like this, but somehow I’m drawn in by it. Completely hypnotized! I’m turning Japanese! Genki! … Smashing track! Very original! #07: Atriohm – No Name Channels [147 BPM] Everything I’ve heard from Leonid & Aleksandar Golcev from Macedonia has been above average quality… These guys are very talented, and this track underlines that fact once again… From the rusty, crackling intro to the spot-on sequencing and cleverly placed trip tools scattered all over this vicious track… This is eerie, haunting and very industrial-sounding stuff… But most importantly, the psychedelic edge is kept intact… Sweet! #08: Phonic Request & Akhoa – Bee People Abduction [148 BPM] Wilfried Decaesteker (Phonic Request) and Olivier Charpier (Akhoa) have been in cahoots on a number of releases on different labels… I really like their humorous take on psytrance which kinda simplifies this nocturnal music, which can often come across as a little pretentious with all the darkness and acid all over the place….And sure enough, this track also relies on a little comic relief. Like the sampled bees used in the intro and several other places in the track… And it works really well – you really do get the feeling that you’re among those fascinating insects when listening to this somewhat claustrophobic track… It’s simple but effective! Beeeeeeeuitiful! #09: Kindzadza & Kaliflower – Viva Tempo [149 BPM] Russian producer Leo Greshilov (Kindzadza) is a Parvati regular – and among the most productive frontrunners of the so-called darkpsy artist pool… On this track he’s joined by some Russian dude only credited as Dasha (Kaliflower) and AFAIK this is his debut release… Anyway, this is a monstrous track – right from the massive electro-soaked intro the power level goes thru the roof! Energetic, relentless, propane-injected hyper trance that will appeal equally to dancers and sofa trancers… I like the sharp contrast between electro and trip-tastic psytrance – as well as the sheer level of energy… Often energetic music tends to loose focus, but that’s not the case here – fortunately! This is just pure, psychedelic night trance… Awesome! #10: Tsabeat – Magletcha [147 BPM] Israeli producer Elad Weinberg kinda scared me with his demented almost drill&bass-like track on the Mistress Of Evil compilation Trauma Trance released in late 2005… And this track is another extremely hardcore tour de force into the deepest, darkest and weirdest realms of hyper trance… But damn, it TOTALLY works here! If you’re the kind of pervert that takes your psytrance über dark, totally twisted and extremely hardcore, well then this track will send you straight to heaven… I like most of what I hear here – but admittedly some parts are still too damn intense even for me… But generally this is very interesting and it’s destined to send chock waves thru the trance floors this summer! Another fan-fucking-tastic Parvati release! That’s right, I might sound like the biggest whore around, but when it comes to Parvati there is never a dull moment or a mediocre release! This is top-drawer stuff from the leading label in hyper trance! And yes, that means more creamed pants! It’s only natural to compare this with the first Psy Stories compilation – and after some careful consideration and judgement, I can conclude that Psy Stories 2 is *almost* as good as Psy Stories which wins only by a nose hair… But that one is gonna be VERY hard to top, as it’s definitely my fav’e Parvati release ever! Anyway, with only a couple of minor gripes, this compilation is packed with hard-hitting, gut-wrenching, jaw-dropping psytrance… Trippy as ever and totally danceable! The cover art by Batunn is lovely, and whilst the parental advisory sticker gag perhaps is a little outdated, it doesn’t ruin the impression of another high quality Parvati release! Well done! An essential purchase for any dedicated fan of relentless, nocturnal and trippy psytrance… Nuff said! Enjoy! 8. Panick – Lab-O-Matic Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Panick (Israel) Title: Lab-O-Matic Format: CD (digipack) Label: Neurobiotic Records (Italy) Cat. #: NBR CD 018 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 29 May 2006 Track listing: 01. 06’36” Menace To Society 02. 06’04” Blind Sensations 03. 06’09” Radioshake 04. 05’40” Incsoc 05. 06’10” Lab-O-Matic 06. 06’10” Chronick Candy 07. 07’04” Class-X 08. 06’49” Cap Zion 09. 07’06” Jibjab 10. 07’12” Manic Miner Edit .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/p5s4x (all tracks!) Review: Vamos a la playa! Israeli producer Nick Laniado is out with his second album, following the seemingly very popular Rocket Pocket released by Phonokol in 2003. I haven’t heard that album, but I’ve heard and enjoyed Nick’s input on the 2001 Psysex album Hardcore Blastoff… To put it lightly, I’m not a fan of the endless stream of generic full-on coming out of Israel – but luckily there’s still good full-on being produced. Tron’s smashing debut album Existence released by Liquid Records in early 2006 is a good example of brilliantly eclectic full-on being created in other parts of the world. Truth being, I have limited knowledge into the somewhat extensive Neurobiotic back-catalogue, but from what I’ve understood it’s among the better full-on labels… Let’s find out if this release can verify that… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Menace To Society The intro is very cool and suspenseful – unfortunately most parts of the actual track are way too predictable and generic for my taste… And I’m not too pleased with the Infected Mushroom-like twirling synth lines either… Yikes, this is not too good a start… Sure, the bridge part has some interesting tweaks, but generally I’m not too impressed… #02: Blind Sensations “Video link-up requested!” After the somewhat shaky start, the next track is better… Sure, the bassline is still pretty bland, but the accompanying FX has more staying power and more ‘bite’… There’s an underlying groove here which I really like – and this track will work wonders on both the dance floors and in the living rooms – with the thrilling break-down part being the leading catalyst for just that… Pretty tasty tune! #03: Radioshake The next track seems to raise the bar another couple of notches… The pace has quickened and the basslines seems to have seen a little more consideration… The eerie, filtered voice-samples are sweet and the hands-in-the-air summer-festy touch is definitely present here with the massive punch of the ‘climax’ following the break… Maybe even too much, I don’t know… It’s good, but not great you know… #04: Incsoc Well, this track is another IM-clone… It may be VERY well-produced and I’m sure it will work absolute wonders on the floor, but it’s still a clone of something I’ve heard before… And don’t even get me started on the bassline… *Yawn* #05: Lab-O-Matic “That runner's smarter than we've seen so far! It's quite a catch. Thanks. Do you think it will convert? To convert is its choice to make!” Luckily the title track is much more interesting… The spacy, high-pitched melodies are both deranged and trippy – and the underlying rhythm section is nothing short of phat… A lovely piece of well-crafted full-on that will definitely turn some heads and move some feet! #06: Chronick Candy “Like undulant swirling smoke!” This track has some of the same spacey elements that made the previous track so great – and it has a very appealing, almost marching rhythm that I really like… It’s totally trance-inducing and will work absolute wonders on the floor… Sadly it also has some cheesy bits, especially towards the end of the track… They prevent me from hyping this track totally – but it’s still pretty neat… #07: Class-X “Irrational impulses!” Next up is another pretty predictable track – after the brief intro and the first stroke of the bassline and the first cord of the melody you’ve basically heard the entire track… Cheese-fest! #08: Cap Zion This one is better – without being great… But the intensity level has been raised again and this is sheer burst of energy… Definitely something that will go down well on a sunny dancefloor at the summer festivals… It’s fast-paced, in-your-face sunny funny frolics! Pretty tasty – but somehow it lacks the X-factor that would have elevated it into the awesome category… #09: Jibjab It’s pretty much becoming a rule of thumb now, but here’s another not-so-great track… Sure it has interesting parts, but as a whole this just doesn’t *do* enough for me… Style wise this sways away from dancefloor minded full-on into more epic, melodic trance with hints of psy… Sadly it’s a turn for the worse, and as mentioned above this doesn’t really rock my boat… #10: Manic Miner Edit “Please stand back from the automated door and wait for the security officer to verify your identity. Before exiting the train, be sure to check your area for personal belongings. Thank you and have a very safe and productive day!” This is a ‘bonus track’ – and it was previously released on the 2005 Neurobiotic compilation Sonica under Laniado’s real first name Nick… And what a track this is! This is highly focussed, action-packed, smile-cracking full-on… Twirling, old-school melodies and dancefloor orientated basslines that makes it hard not to get sucked in… A great, powerful track! Alright, what we have here is an album with half the tracks being cheesy and predictable – and the other half being pretty good… That ratio is not good enough! Obviously I would have preferred an album packed to the rim with one ‘killargh’ after the other… That’s not the case here, and that’s really a shame! So, this is not the best full-on album I’ve heard in 2005 – but on the other hand it’s not the worst either… Far from it! It’s no secret, that I am not a fan of boring, predictable, formulated, iconic Israeli neo full-on – and it’s been quite a while since I had a pleasant experience with a full-on CD made in Israel. Luckily Panick isn’t a total loss – coz as my indication of fav’e tracks below shows, there are indeed some great stuff to be found here… I just wish they weren’t so scarce! Also I wish the good tracks were longer. But let me also stress, that as a full-on album this is MILES ABOVE most of the generic, formulaic crap coming out of Israel nowadays… I’ll take this over Vibe Tribe, Dali or… Infected Mushroom (!) ANY day! Full-on fans will dig this – purists should sample it carefully before making the purchase… Either way – enjoy! Favourites: 2, 5(!), 6, 10(!) 12. Well, it's 'just' a promo - and I have no idea why it's SOOO expensive seeing as how Transient did press promos in large numbers... The artwork is different though - which makes it interesting... But given the price, not *that* interesting... Oh, and about jewel case/digipack - Transient often published re-prints in jewel cases instead of the original digipacks... As you Antic, I have the original digipack in my collection, so I'm not going anywhere near this one... The seller, climaczuk, is absolutely cool though - I've just bought a couple of oldschool CDs from him (at reasonable prices too). /DP

  16. V/A – A Magical Journey 2 Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: A Magical Journey 2 Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Ajana Records (Germany) Cat. #: AJACD005 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 1 May 2006 Track listing: 01. 09’11” Electrypnose vs. Ecalypt - Nabuconodosor 02. 07’02” Olien - Ozeanic 03. 11’23” Chronos – Sky Path 04. 07’13” Unstable Elements – Technical Illusions 05. 08’18” Atriohm – Beyond Rituals 06. 06’57” Capsula – Dice Man 07. 06’49” Procs – Fascinating Superhero 08. 13’05” Psyfactor – Galileo Space Mission 09. 06’51” Zoe Wheelingz – Shadow Is Back .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/nhxxe (all tracks!) Review: Around the world in two daze… (sic intended!) Ajana Records is the chilled sub-label of Germany’s Trishula Records – and things have been moving fast for this rising label. The first release A Magical Journey was released less than a year ago in the summer of 2005. After three artist albums, most notably the wonderful Capsula album Synthesis Of Reality, it’s time for the follow-up. Perhaps the name A Magical Journey 2 isn’t very original, but at least that indicates that this will be a continuous series – and that’s a good thing, coz the first one sure had its moments… The track list of this, the second one, looks promising too – so let’s venture out on another journey… =D Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Electrypnose vs. Ecalypt – Nabuconodosor The journey starts with a lenghty exposition of epic proportions. Conjured by the Swiss sound magician Electrypnose (Vince Le Barde) who recently graced us with his second album, the magically diverse Le Tireur De Ficelles (Peak Records 2006). On this track Vince is in cahoots with his countryman Ecalypt – a project I have zero info on... Anyway, this track is a slow-burning, subtle piece of ethno-dub seasoned with simple, uplifting melodies and hypnotizing didgeridoos... Very soothing and relaxing music... Lovely! #02: Olien – Ozeanic Olien is Olivier Bach from Germany, and with this track he takes the journey to a more upbeat place. The organic, watery intro is cool and it soon transforms into a more percussion-ridden piece of groovy downbeat... The tribal/organic combo is pretty neat, though not overly innovative… It reminds me of Aluna… Nice for sure! #03: Chronos – Sky Path Russian producer Nikita Klimenko also produces music under his Shankar alias, but is perhaps better know as one half of the Secret Trick duo which as a couple of tracks released on different compilations. This is the first downbeat stuff I hear from his hand though… What we get here, is pure melodic, floating downbeat… Ambient at first, but soon some fluffy melodies and subtle beats are thrown into the mix…It’s all nice and smooth, but sadly it’s also pretty boring and predictable… #04: Unstable Elements – Technical Illusions This duo consists of Kornev Maxim & Epifanov Andrew from Russia… They released their debut album Technical Illusions on Kagdila Records but I’m afraid it passed under my radar unnoticed… I have to check that out though, as this is an interesting track… Highly digitized, electro-ridden, dubby and mysterious downbeat… Like Bluetech on coke or Psyfactor on downers… Very interesting! #05: Atriohm – Beyond Rituals Everything I’ve heard from Macedonian producers Leonid Golcev & Aleksandar Golcev have been high quality – and so is this! This is deluxe chill-out – totally ripe and totally lush! It’s a big mishmash of ethno-tribal world beats and snazzy, wiggle-your-toe friendly compositions – all tied up in an almost Shponglesque or Entheogenic-like manner… Evidently those familiar links are also what prevents me from grading this higher than ‘good’… But hey, it *is* good! #06: Capsula – Dice Man Yosef Shamay impressed me immensely with his stunning debut album Synthesis Of Reality released on Ajana Records in late 2005 – and it was about time we heard more from this talented Israelite… Unfortunately this track isn’t as good as I’d hoped for… Sure, it’s nice and chilled and dubby and floating… But that’s it – it’s nice, but not up to par with previous Capsula stuff… #07: Procs – Fascinating Superhero Swedish producer Mikael Stegman has always been somewhat of a favourite of mine – despite his somewhat introvert debut album Stuck In The Oven With Me released by Ajana Record’s sister label Trishula Records in 2005 + his mildly disappointing track off the Sanatonic Audio compilation released by Sanaton Audio earlier in 2006… I still haven’t given up on Procs and I’m hoping he’s got a couple more aces up his sleeve… And I’m happy to say, that this track is the best I’ve heard from Procs in a while… This is hugely atmospheric, esoteric, mature and experimental downbeat – rich in contrasts and it’s easily the most psychedelic tune here… Simple, yet complex. Chilled, yet hectic. Naïve, yet beautiful. Simply brilliant! Welcome back Procs! #08: Psyfactor – Galileo Space Mission I’ve got somewhat mixed feelings about the output of Russian producer Dimitri Korablin… Let’s just say that basically I like most of his older stuff, but his latest album on Ajana Records, the chilled Endless Universe, was a complete and utter miss for me… It was way too boring and I didn’t like it! This track however is easily better than any track from the aforementioned album… This is more versatile and has better progression – and the output is interesting for a change! Nice one! We’re still not re-inventing the wheel here, but it’s interesting enough to retain my attention. Welcome back Psyfactor! #09: Zoe Wheelingz – Shadow Is Back AFAIK this is the debut release by French producer Virginie Scheerens – and what a debut! This is highly experimental, oddball electro-clash… Upbeat dubby rhythms + irregular beats which are much more IDM than downbeat… This is a pretty crazy tune and definitely very different from everything else on this compilation. Different – yes! Interesting – somewhat! Good – not really! Maybe it’s just me who doesn’t fully understand this kind of music, but I don’t really understand its relevance here… Ah well… Onwards and upwards! Before you ask – yes, this is slightly better than the first A Magical Journey. This one wins by a nose hair! The flow is better than on the first one, and the good/less good track ratio is still high enough to validate a purchase… Sure there are some misses here and in that regard, this is not an essential buy… Also the cover art isn’t exactly excelling in its beauty! But all in all, this is a pretty nice compilation with a couple of really excellent tracks – and even more good tracks… And after the disappointing Psyfactor album, this is indeed a step in the right direction for Ajana Records. Ajana fans will dig it for sure, as chill-fanatics in general will most likely find something to their liking here too… Perhaps it’s not the amazing magical journey that it set out to be, but it sure has its moments… Enjoy!
