Made on 10-16-00 with Arne Schaffhausen & Wayan Raabe by Children 1) How and when did you start to make minimal trance ? Did you make music before ? We've started to produce music in december ´98 with a few equipment. since we started we just made what we like: techno, trance, elektrostuff. it's better to keep the progress also by changing styles, there is so many different music to do and we just started to do some of what we would like to do. in this progress we recognized that we developed also our own personal style what should never end. and by the way minimalism is relativ... 2) Do you project to release a new Spirallianz (or Midi Miliz) album ? When would it (they) be released ? Yes, the "Midi Miliz"-album is finished. it's called "antistat" and is expected to be released in the end of the year on d.drum records (novatekk). the next "spirallianz"-album on spiritzone is scheduled for mid of the next year. the next releases at all are Midi Miliz flip-rmx 12" on mdma records, f.m.s. update 12" + spirallianz rmx on plusquam records, spirallianz motorman 12" on spiritzone... 3) Do you work differently when producing as Spirallianz or Midi Miliz ? There's no big difference between "Midi Miliz" and "spirallianz", maybe the "Midi Miliz"-tracks are more rough, and spirallianz is a bit more trance. but it is co-incedence what is what. 4) Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? Blast food, starkstrom, motorman(unrel.), druckabfall(unrel. the delta)... but mostly it is like the newest are the best... 5) Your favourite minimal & psytrance Groups & Albums ? Leftfield, plastikman, adam beyer, sven vath, ellen alien, anthony rother....... juno reactor(1st album), x_dream, f.m.s., 3.turn/authentik 6) Where does your inspiration come from when building a Track ? h*sh or gr*ss. 7) Tell us your recipe to make a good minimal Track ? There no golden recipe or something, we don't start always with the bassdrum or with the sample, it's not fixed. to keep it minimal it is important to have good mixdown, a few sounds has to sound big. well timed changes and effects in the monotone flow... sometimes it is not so easy to keep it interesting without overloading the track. 8) What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? Recording: G3/233 Mac with MotU 1224, Audiowerk8, Unitor8, Logic Audio and sounddiver. Outboard: 2 * dbx 1066, Aphex Compellor, Behringer Ultrafex FX: ensonic DP4, Lexicon PCM 81, Synthesizer - Sampler: Waldorf microwave XT, Korg MS 20, Akai S2000 9) How long does it take you to make a Track ? It depends on the mood. sometimes we need 3 weeks and sometimes we do the main structure in one night, often these are are the best. a track is finished when you think it is. 10) Future projects ? At the moment we are producing the new "the delta" album with marcus c. maichel and we also have to do a s.u.n. project r.m.x. for spiritzone, a paps r.m.x for z.m.a. and some live acts. 11) Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? There are many but much more intersting are big studios! 12) Do you play DJ sets ? If so, what kind of stuff do you play as DJ in parties ? We both started with djaying both in 94. arne runs the dj-team "spiralkinda" with marco schmedding. wayan stopped in 98. he get bored of it and marco and me still play but not so much like before. the stuff we play is always different, sometimes we also play electro or breakbeat sets it depends on the party. many of the artists are mentioned above. 13) When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? Also a very hard question! one of arne's best parties were v00v98, and wayan's shiva moon 96.the two biggest trance-events in germany. very good parties are also in switzerland, japan, scandinavia and many others... best live hemp-parade hamburg 00. the worst are so many and too chaotic we can not remember. 14) Thanks a lot & good luck for your next releases ;-)

Made on 08-16-00 by Infected Max 1) Ok....So first, thanks for being kind enough to accept the interview... it's a pleasure!! 2) Let's go ! In which city is based Son Kite? We're based in Malmoe, the extreme south of Sweden 3) Did u discovered Trance/Techno there? Or around the world? We got into Techno and Trance here in the south of Sweden by going to parties and promoting parties 4) Do you have a background in music making? did u studied music? Marcus have been playing as a Dj since 1993 and Sebastian has a background as a violin and piano player in several musicstyles. 5) How did u met toghether? Marcus was promoting parties and was djing in his hometown where Sebastian also lived so one the day they met 6) In a party? Both yes and no! it's a small town (not Malmoe) so we knew about eachother! 7) So...after u met...how was born Son Kite? did u made Son Kite project immediatly or did u do several projects? Wow..that's a long way! We were first of all good friends for a couple of years partying together! Then Sebastian was making ambient music with a another guy called Christian. This project got into some more dance orientated stuff and the obvious thing was to give it to Marcus who played it at parties. Then Marcus joined and Trimatic was born. We decided to go 100% with the music and unfortunately Christian had other interests and chose to drop out. After that we spent many late hours in the studio, working daytime at our regular jobs and then in the studio at night. If you know Trimatic (Baluns records) it's more techno progressive and in a moment of wanting to explore a new area, Son Kite was born, in spring of 1998. 8) Today...you still work? Yes we are still working but now only with the music!! and of course our labels Baluns records and Digital structures. 9) About the labels.....why 2 labels? 2 differents kinds of music? Well since the trance and techno are getting closer and closer the variety of trance sounds are increasing. If you would try to get them under the same roof the variety would be to big. Now we can cover a bigger area of the styles we like and we cover a bigger area of consumers and hopefully even get people to listen to music they don't usually listen to. Baluns records is more techno/trance with emphasis on techno/house and Digital structures is into a trance sound that we would call progressive trance. With this we mean an approach to the old trance sound merged with techno beats. 10) How much time do u work on a track ? So we work about 8-10 hours per day. Of course not all the time making music. It takes us about a week to finish a track...sometimes more ...sometimes less!! 11) Why did you choose Son Kite name ? what does it means? It's one of the most common and hard to answer questions! Son Kite means: Kite is the thing you fly with as a toy. Are you french? 12) Yes "un cerf volant!" and Son is from latin languages meaning to sound. So with the help of sounds we reach the sky as someone can do with a kite. 13) it's a strange idea...) Because we felt it was the best description of our way to see music! 14) I understand...Are u still Djing? or only performing live acts? Since we spend a lot of time in the studio and we play live as Son Kite a lot, there's no time for Marcus to travel and dj by himself. But he plays as a dj when we go away to play live. 15) Have you been influenced by artists? Our influences come from all kind of music but in techno and trance there's no real influence but rather an appreciation of other artists work that has of course left footprints on our music. To name a few: Massimo Vivona, Planet Ben, Fusionmen, Skintrade, Der Dritte Raum and of course a lot more.... 16) When you perform a live....do you add things on your tracks? what's the difference between the tracks on CDs and tracks played in live? We early decided not to play DAT lives! Instead we invested money in a 16 channel multi track recorder and a Pioneer cd player. To be able to mix the live properly we play one track live, one track cd, one track live...and so on. The whole thing is beatmixed by Marcus so it's 2 hours of non stop pumping. The tracks we play live are recorded on 16 channels so we have for example bass kick on channel 1 and sub bass on channel 2 and so on. This way we can make all arrangements on a mixing console live. This allows us to meet the needs of the dancing crowd and it's never the same!! For example we can make a break as long as it takes to make the crowd go crazy and of course it's really funny to tease the people and especially the ones that knows our tracks! 17) Some artists in techno often wants to make other music...like movie music or Tv show music...do u feel the same? We listen to all kinds of music and of course that would be a challenge for the future. But now there's not the time and we love what we do now! 18) On internet lot of people heard a live recorded from Swedish Radio...a Son Kite one in Malmo...every body liked it ten times more than the album.....do u plan do record a live? The live was recorded by Swedish National Radio when Malmoe was elected "Swedish Music Town of the Year" and Son Kite was one of two bands who represented dance music. Since it was to be played on national radio, it's only one hour which didn't enabled us to do the live as we want to so if people really like that they should hear our "normal" full length live (always 2 hours). About the music, our live contains both released and unreleased tracks so maybe people like the way Son Kite has developped musically. The music on minilogue, our album, was made quite some time ago but we still really love the tracks but for us development is really important so people don't put you in a cathegory of music and then you stay there. Our next album is to be released in spring 2001 and it's going to have an excellent variety of what we like. Of course you'll hear our sound but in different shapes. It will be out on our own label Digital structures. About recording a live cd: good idea!!! We should also mention that it was recorded in our home town and the local support was massive. As you can hear on the recording. 19) Wanna say something about MP3? For unreleased artists it's a great opportunity to reach people around the world but... when it becomes a substitute of buying records then it's something that fucks up for the artists, labels etc.... and in the end for the consumers because us for example we're not rich people who can continue making music without selling records....we need to pay our rent and buy new toys for the studio (hehe). And of course we would be sad to see vinyl dissapear!!! 20) ...and about sellings...do u know how many Minilogue you sold? We're waiting for the statements from NovaTekk to know... 21) What & where was your best party ? So, Fusion festival this year, Flying Rhino Open Air in Perleberg, Germany, Monterrey, Mexico (incredible place) and of course the rumoured live here in Malmoe...(the last due to our incredible local support!!). 22) The worst ? Arvika festival in Sweden 1999 when the sound engineers fucked up and we played live for 10 minutes and it sounded crap!! 23) Do you got things to say to people who want to make music like you ? Well this will sound like a cliché but since everybody has their own style and beliefs we can only say: work hard (really really hard) and don't give up until you reach the production that satisfies you. Because when you do so it's the greatest reward of all!! 24) Things to say to your "fans"/people who like your stuff? To the fans: a very big thanks for liking our music...and you have a lot of Son Kite to look forward to!! 25) Do u have a clue about why Scandinavian sound is exploding today ??? Eehh? two seconds... we really don't have a clue! Of course there is a lot of new stuff coming from Scandinavia and maybe it delivered something to the trance scene that was wanted and needed!!? 26) One of you is invloved in "Ticon"? No. But Fredrik and Filip in Ticon are very good friends of us and they are one of our main artists on Digital Structures, next to Son Kite, and they will also appear with an album on our label in spring 2001. 27) Are you planning to play live in Israel and Goteborg (Question from Mascok & F-Active)? We have a good connection in Tel-Aviv and they really want to bring us but nothing decided yet. As for Gothenburg I believe the scene is quite small but of course we would love to play there! 28) So i'd like to thank you, from everybody of the site, because it's cool that artists like you take time to react on our forum and take time to answer to looooooong, interactives interviews like this one We really like your site and we check it everyday for updates! the best we've found so far!! 29) Do you have anything to add? Here comes....If you need any info on Son Kite, upcoming releases, upcoming liveacts etc etc, then check http://digitalstructures.techno.org and enter "artists" in the navigation. On the site you'll find all info needed on our label and the artists we're releasing. Also check our other label http://baluns.techno.org . 30) Some releases on other labels planned ? Since we are making a lot of music we would take up to much release space. There are a lot of other talented artists that we want to release and we actually want to release on other labels. We've spread our releases on many labels but in the future it will mostly be on three labels: Digital Structures, Flying Rhino and NovaTekk. 31) Where are you the most popular ? if you check the membership list of our fanclub then it should be....the Moon....just kidding...we don't have a clue!! 32) Would you like to work with some artists? At the moment we have two projects: one together with Ticon and one with Karl Axel Bissler...and we would like to work with many artists that we like but as always there's no time and we're really satisfied with what we are doing now. We have made a remix of the Sandman track "loop in control" (Hadshot) and we'll come back with others!! 33) Do u think one day u'll make a full Son Kite website? With pics, videos etc etc ? No it will continue to be on the Digital Structures site. Another good idea!! (about the video). We will...we might have a recording from the Flying Rhino Open Air so we'll see... 34) Is there a way people can contact you for precise infos ? People can send mails to Son Kite by our company's e-mail: mpdqx@techno.org 35) Thanks for the interview..it was cool to do. Cool as ice..ice baby!!...shall we end it here before we say too silly things!!? 36) That's it.

Made on 01-03-02 with Eki and Marko by Jeto 1) How many members consist in Sienis and your names ? Eki: Sienis is Eki Jokisalo and Marko Peteri. Marko: Weee! Yes indeed. I agree totally! ...so that makes 2 of us. ...or what I meant to say is that Sienis is two guys. 2) How old are you ? Eki: 20 ...trying to stay as young as possible in the mind tho... thinking too much usually makes people unhappy... heheh Marko: Weee! 21. 3) Where do you live ? Eki: We both live in Stockholm/Sweden but we´re both finns ´couse our parents are from Finland. Marko: Marko: Weee! ...we live really close to each other, about 3-5 minutes walking distance. 4) Where did u met and when ? Eki: Kindergarden, propably. Marko: Weee! Yeah, hard to remember, we've lived near each other since childhood and had some same friends. 5) Before you met, you made music alone ? Eki: Well, before we started making music together, I had worked on some instrumental hiphop... That was prolly the main reason we met, Marko heard one of my tunes and invited me to come over and work together on something more electronic... heheheh. Marko: Weee! Yup... I had been experimenting with acid influenced electronic music. 6) Where does the inspiration come from when building a track ? Eki: It comes from everywhere... our experiences, our past, our current state of mind and chocolate bars. Marko: Weee! I believe I get my inspiration from my life experiences. Everything that get caught in the net of my subconscious mind and sumhow grow and evolve into beatiful visions and create these dreams where my visions come to reality. Eki: That's deep, man. 7) What equipment are you using to make your music ? Eki: I use my heart mainly... and we got our precious Access Virus that works magic along with sounds I make with my armpit... it can be very mesmerizing... Marko: Weee! The main equipment is my conscious mind which is accompanied by the subconscious. Then we got other gear too like the Virus but most of the stuff we produce these days are sequenced in the computers with the use of lots of different software. 8) Do you plan on releasing more tracks on a Compilation? Album Soon Maybe ? Eki: Of course, we just played at the Exogenic 'VA - Custom File' release party which is coming out to all you spugedelic lovers in the near future. Also the release date on our EP on Koyote is set with two Sienidelicious tracks. We update our website at www.sienis.org whenever there´s a new Sienis release. We are in no hurry for a full album yet, we want to take our time to make it a timeless album. Music is Life and Life is Music! Marko: Weee! Well... Eki said the most... The Custom File compilation was released in Finland December '01 and the International Release Date is yet to be announced. We're very proud to be part of the Finnish Spugedelic Revolution. 9) At a Party you do a DJ Set or a Live Act ? Eki: Right now we do both and we´re working towards more and more live. On our next set I´m gonna do my voodoo on you with a mic trough fx!!! Marko: Weee! Our current set involves Eki bouncing and smiling like a Duracell bunny on speed and mixing cd's and me infront the synth acting all cool and adding fx, noise and whatever other insanity I might get ideas of to spice the whole set with. Too bad I can't take a guitar and smash it like those cool rock people do to add to the coolness factor. That might get the arrangers all upset if their hired gear would be smashed straight down the trash-bin. Oh... and it might distract the people from their inner journeys...We wouldn't like that. Eki: True... and i don´t think we´re violent enough for that, hahaha we´re way too peaceful. 10) Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? Eki: I put so much time, soul and spirit to all of our tracks that it´s impossible to choose. They all got their own personality depending on mindstate. Marko: Weee! Indeed... They all sound good at a certain place at a certain time with certain people. Tho I must admit that usually the most recent track I think is the one that sounds the best directly after it is finished. This is probably because it's the most updated track to our mindset/state and our own technical advancement's. But when you listen to your own tracks a while after they were finished they are all like a blueprint of yourself. 11) Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? Eki: Simon Posford is a name that pops up in my mind immediately. Then there are so many others I´d love to work with, such as Squaremeat, Texas Faggott, Hux Flux, GMS... I want to work with every openminded talented artist out there... You´re all welcome to our humble studio! ...(very humble as a matter of fact) Marko: Weee! Yeah why not... I'd love to work with lots of innovative open-minded artists. 12) Do you have any TIP's or comments or suggestions to newer artists trying to make trance music ? Eki: Take a while to meditate and expand your mind by any means necessary, deciding what you want with your track before you start, it will boost your inspiration. Then sample your dog and put the sample trough so many fx that it won´t be able sue you for copyright issues and then put it on top of a hypnotizing beat until it starts to attract lifeforms from outher space. When they come ringing on your doorbell you´re on the right path!!!. Marko: Weee! I'm speechless... WOW! I believe in being open-minded and giving each sound, track and style a chance to fill you with inspiration. This open-mindness will make you grow as an artist and bring u enlightenment with which u will find your own sound much more easily. Eki: Hehehe I thought you said you were speechless. Marko: Ooops sorry... Eki: I forgive you... hehe. 13) Which was your best party, and your worst one ? Eki: In a way I think our first party opening for Hux Flux was amazing... it was a new feeling for both of us and to see 600 people jumping to our fullon, twisted party tracks made me feel almost as good as sex does... almost! hahhaha. I don´t think we´ve had a bad party and if there´s going to be a 'bad' party i bet it will teach us something new. Marko: Weee! The first gig we did was this 'Area 51' party in Docklands, Stockholm March 2000. We called ourselves Psychedelic Virus back then and the setup was amazing. HuxFlux, Masada, Trance][Control and I think that Logic Bomb did a gig that night too even tho they weren't listed on the flyer. The whole feeling of just standing infront a crowd of about 600 the first time we were about to play our tracks to a public really felt totally incredible. I must admit that I was really nervous because this was the first time we were going to get sum serious feedback on the music we were making. To see the people happy with or without drugs and enjoying the music and the party itself really touched me. This must have been the most strong experience so far in my musical career. We have had several awesome parties after this but this is still one of the most strong memories. Another highlight in our career was when we got this 'Exogenic Label Party' gig in Helsinki December 2001 and to meet the Finnish scene and get to play our tracks to them felt really strong too deep in the heart, another dream come true. 14) What do you think of the evolution of electronic music ? Good or bad or Ugly in you're opinion ? Eki: I believe it´s going to be the universal language. I also hope that more artists will come loose from this depressive period and start making music that makes people feel good, more enlightened, happy and excited... just put more soul into the music and not do it the easy way. I see more people all the time that reach this new openminded and enligheted state of mind so i hope the music will be more like that state. People need to be reminded that they´re supposed to have fun and not go to parties to show off. Stop thinking too much about what other people think... ...go your own way, make your own path in life!!! Marko: Weee! I believe it's all good. It's the invidual ideas and experimentation of the artists that make the electronic music evolve. Now it's almost like the psychedelic electronic music scene is becoming part acoustic and part electronic and I think this is really good. Taking the best of both worlds and experimenting with it to reach new heights in musical evolution in general. I believe the technological accomplishments that has been done since the first synthesizers that affect music production has come a long way and that it's been a healthy way because now the boundaries between different genres/styles are merging to become customizable to the invidual artistry. I believe we're reaching a new kind of awareness in the music- scene altogether. We're realising the potentional possibilities of the music itself to unite people and make people find strenght in it to continue evolving as inviduals and as a humanity in itself. This is all thanks to the new simpler ways of expressing yourself thru music which itself comes from the technical evolution that made it all possible and is making the way music is produced even easier and more powerful each day! 15) Thanks for the Interview and have a very Happy New Year!!! Spank you very much! It´s going to be an awesome 2002!!! Keep your ears, eyes and minds open for the Fungi Sapien Evolution!!! BoM!!!

Made on 12-07-00 with Daniel Vernunft by Children 1) How and when did you start to make Goa ? ´91 i was on my first trance party in manali (india) and was amazed by the music and people. Being back in Germany there have been small private parties in the forrest and i got more into it. I bought an atari computer and started in `92 to make trance with little equiptment and just for my own. 2) Let's talk about "Auricular" … it seems you completely changed of style : your previous one was psychedelic & melodic, with many tribal sounds, and the one of your new album is much more minimal, and some sounds make me remind of Atmos style (in better, according to me) … why such a change of style ? I think Atmos have his own style. All my four albums are very different from each other. Even on the same album the tracks are not very simular. But it's true, i`m trying to find new ways, new sounds. I never liked such trouble sound and my music had been minimal all the time. I had bought a new very good microphone and made a lot of recordings creating sounds by my own and i also get new impressions with djs like Phillip and Mapusa Mapusa i did some tracks together. 3) Do you project to release a new album after "Auricular" ? When would it be released ? Do you think it will be more in your old style or your new more minimal style ? Yes for sure. I`doing a new project with dj Mapusa Mapusa. There will come a new album on Medium Rec. in March 2001. The project-name is also called "Auricular". There are some tracks we did together on the Auricular album so i called it "Auricular" like our new project name. After summer 2001 the next Shiva Chandra album will come. There is also a 12" coming soon on Plastic Park Records with the title Prime Time Plastix.( dj Phillip and me). 4) Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? I have over 60 releases and i like a lot of them. Some of my favourits are chandra, mendrem, essence, metasynth, and schaukelstuhl. 5) Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? There are so many kinds of music. Even swing can be psychedelic. I like xv kilist, Haldolium, SBK, and many more. 6) Where does your inspiration come from when building an old-style Shiva Chandra Track, and a new minimal one ? From my muses and from experiences i make in my life. But`s a kind of energy, you get it or you don`t . 7) What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? I have a complete studio, syntheziser and other hardware. I use the Neumann U87 for recording samples being edited on the computer with cubase vst. 8) And how long does it generally take you to make a Track ? The work is not only to make the tracks. You have to care about your complete setup, learning new programs etc. Good prepared i need about three days for one track. 9) Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? There are some artists i want to work together since years. For example Earth, tarsis/ sbk and xv kilist. To make different music with good musicians would be also very interesting. 10) Do you play DJ sets ? If so, what kind of stuff do you play as DJ in parties ? I´m doing live acts. Sometimes i`m playing dj sets, but it´s more my music i play and music which is according to it. 11) When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? Too difficult question. In the last time i played on a very good party in Tokyo, organized by Trance Cafe. The worst one i don`t remember because it was too bad. 12) As you're in psytrance for many years, what do you think about the evolution of psytrance in the last years on a musical point of view ? Have things gotten better/worse according to you ? The music is getting better, because of technical developments. And it`s also getting more commercial, which means many people getting open for it, everywhere in the world. Thats good. It´s connecting cultures. 13) One last question that could interest our visitors : from an album costing 20$, how much come in your pocket ? And how much do you get when there is one Track from you on a 20$ compilation ? It depends on your contracts. For one album about US $ 1,50 including copyright payments. On compilation for example ten artists have to share this US $ 1,50. 14) Thanks a lot & good luck for your next stuff ;-)

Made on 06-08-02 with Shahar (from Isratrance) by Chaitu 1) Firstly, please introduce yourself so the visitors of psynews get to know you better. Mmmmm.... tough question- well, my name is Shahar. I'm basically a happy guy who likes music and life, likes nature and the world around him, and wants to change the world into a nicer place- even a little change will be nice. I live in Israel, but I also really like to travel and been to a lot of places around the world. I guess that will do- if you wanna know more you'll have to meet me :-) 2) How long have you been involved with the trance scene - what drew you closer to this particular genre of electronic music. Your musical background and journey through music - how it effected you and your relationship with music today ? I discovered trance accidently in 1990 when I was in my army service and some girl from my base offered me to come to a party on top of Masada- I had no clue what it was about- but I always liked to dance so I went. I had a hell of time, especially when the sunrise came up over the Dead Sea. What really appealed to me was to be part of a group of people that gathered around to dance and have a good time together in nature- the energy was great. I went to quite a few parties here and there, but never did more than dance. Only in 94-95, when I was in Australia, I got really hooked. I think that the things that really caught me in the music itself were the different world of sounds and the amazing layering, the ability to ride sounds. Been riding them ever since. I started my affair with music when I was 10 years old. Went through different stages starting with Heavy Metal, a move to Punk, Industrial & New Wave, where I got introduced to electronic music through Front 242, Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, and the rest of them. Than I had a flip back to Psychedelic rock, a search through the 60's and The Blues, Pink Floyd & friends showed me another side of electronic music, I did a side trip to Reggae land, and finally landed in tranceland and electronic music in general. I think I always looked for different music, something that will challenge the mind and ears, and also music that has a message, that has something new to say to the world. Trance is like that. 3) Tell us about your new compilation for Hommega - Amalgamated Amalagamation. I've been working on it for awhile now. It features a lot of established artists from Europe and Israel and some new fresh ones. There is an idea or feeling behind this CD which is a bit different, I believe. I tried to make it differently. It is made on the principal of good vibes- that was my drive from the start, and it influenced most of my decisions here. All the people involved here are people I know personally, the artists, the label, the cover artist, even the graphic designer. Some are just acquaintances, some are really good friends, some I meet personally every week, some are on-line friends, some are travel buddies. All are people that I like and feel a good vibe radiating from them- from all I had the feeling that their heart and mind are in the right place. The only exception are X-Dream, which I never met, but it's OK, because they're X-Dream :-) Basically it represents what trance is all about for me. I think it also shows a different side of Israeli trance- meaning the trance being made and played here, that I'm not sure people are aware of. It definitely ain't what people think of as a typical full on Israeli release. I think it's very mind challenging and needs an effort. But I know for a fact that all tracks rock the floor- they've been tested :-) 4) I must say that the artwork is rather interesting and it really does caputure the essence of these crazy outdoor tribal gatherings. Seems to me like more than just a mystical experience in nature, dont u think so ? Well the cover is a very important part of this project for me, as visuals are a very important part of the party. I wanted it to show what this whole thing is for me, and because of the good connection I had with Neil who painted it, and Noam who designed it- it works- this is what trance parties are all about- amalgamating! 5) Have you been partying a lot recently ? Any significant changes from the days "on top of masada" in 1990 to the millenium night in disco valley to the karahana lifestyle in israel today ? Not a lot really. Definitely not like I used to- I'm getting old, my back is not what it used to, ooch ;-) I don't go to party every weekend, and I go only to parties which I feel are going to be good ones- good nature spots, good tribe vibe, good music that builds itself- parties where the vibe is more important than the financial side of things. Of course the parties have changed in 12 years, the music have changed, the people have changed. But parties like that where what it was all about, and there's always enough of them around. Luckily, after so many years, I have almost a perfect instinct for good parties- haven't been in a bad one for more than 2 years. 6) Are you playing DJ sets. If so where and when was your best experience. I am, but not as an income resource, meaning I've been doing it more as a hobby till now, not a regular base, and only in parties organized by friends, where I knew it's gonna be with the spirit I connect to. I'm starting DJing more seriously now, as I had very good feedbacks, and I'm even playing this summer abroad @ the XPO festival (www.xpo2002.com). My favorite set was in a very big party in the north of Israel where I opened up the line up, though it's no doubt great to be the star in the morning crazyness, it was very rewarding for me to hand to the DJ after me a crowd rightly cooked up at 3am and to see how the party pulled on till 12pm. Another great one was my first set- at a friend's wedding. 7) While travelling in India and abroad, did you learn something unique about world culture and how it's related to music. Why is that people everywhere are connecting to this music and exchanging similar experiences ? Music is part of my travelling, I have brought music from almost every place I visited. I believe every culture you get to know is a door to another world, or in another way, it's another way to see the world. Music is an important part of it. Why people everywhere connect to trance? Quite simple, in every culture people used to trance at one time or another, it's in our genes- the biological and cultural ones. Trance is a shared human experience. 8) What is your definition of 'Good' music ? Music that can take my mind somewhere else. 9) Recently there is a strong shift in the israeli scene to the techno - trance realms. Well more a diversification of the music rather than an entire shift, but it seems to me artists are not just making those fullon-ish melodic tracks, but are diving into darker, aggressive realms. How does one account for this ; - can you perhaps attribute it to the current political situation in Israel. Personally I love the melodic and darker stuff and I look it at as an expression of a state of mind. Do give us your thoughts on this. The situation around is the first thing that jumps to mind, same as everyone seeking the reason why is trance so big in Israel attribute it to our situation and the compulsory army service of 3 years. It sure is a factor, but not that big, I think. I think the reason is more that the people making the music and dancing to it have diversified. There are more people, in different stages in their life, with different energies- they make different music- also of course trance is always looking for a change or a break into another realm. 10) Which was the last CD you bought ? Telefon Tel-Aviv- Fahrenheit Fair Enough. An excellent chill CD with totally nutty rhythms and percussion- mind music in a cool atmosphere. Maybe I'll send my review to psynews later this week, though it's really not trancey at all. 11) After Amalgamated Amalagamation - What are u cooking up next ? Well, first of all I'm cooking, or rather being cooked by, the end of the semester :-) When that's finished, I have thoughts about an "Israeli Tech-Trance Connection" thingy- which, as you said, is something that is happening here in Israel and I think deserves a quality presentation. Next, well... nothing is finalized yet, but I belive you'll hear more from me in the future, and maybe I won't be doing it for someone else. 12) Thank you Shahar, all the best ! Thank you Chaitu. And I want to say a good word for the psynews community and the people behind it- it's a wonderful thing going on here, and I know that this is the opinion of a lot of the people that make this music and care about what it represents.

V/A - Rewired Hi-res cover: front Artist: Various Title: Rewired (compiled by DJ Clown) Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Jester Records (Canada) Cat. #: JR001 Distribution: Wakyo/Statik/Wirikuta Date: 13 April 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’26” DJ Preach – Oxygen Enhanced 02. 06’44” Nuclear Ramjet – Down The Wall 03. 05’08” Three Point Turn – Klush Kingdom 04. 05’41” Kali-Frogz - Dismembered 05. 06’05” Triac - Versa 06. 06’58” Tao vs. Metalogic – Irrational Impulse (4x4 Mix) 07. 05’58” Authentik – Les 3 Machines 08. 05’59” Spirallianz – BP Talk 09. 07’31” Tao – Pacific Intervention 10. 05’31” Hidra – Fixed 11. 05’51” Axiomata – New Normal (Remix) 12. 07’44” Toltech – Codigo Rojo Review: Water cooler trance… Do you remember the scene around the turn of the millennium? Back then the uplifting melodies of the nineties were long forgotten and minimal tech-trance ruled the scene… Pretty much all labels turned their focus to those grim, stripped down techno-beats – and even the frontrunners of full-on, Tip.World, turned minimal. A few years passed and eventually the melodies returned along with the rise of progressive trance… Not much tech-trance prevailed though and today pure tech-trance labels are somewhat scarce within psy-circuits… Well, the newly established label, Jester Records from Canada, is on a trance-mission to change that… Compiled by label founder DJ Clown, the first release is a compilation of technoid music destined to raise some eyebrows… The tracklist reveals the return of a couple of old-timers + a bunch of emerging talents… Almost a year after it was first announced, Rewired has finally arrived… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: DJ Preach – Oxygen Enhanced [135 BPM] DJ Preach (Philippe Babin) from Canada is a well-known techno-producer with a very long roster of releases under his belt… And if his other work is anything like this, I’m already a new fan coz this is daaaaaamn smooth! This is not exactly techno, nor tech-trance… It’s a weird hybrid of both tied up in a bundle of progressive trance… Huge melodic pads fused with deep, pounding rhythms… Very well executed! This would be the perfect transition track going from progressive trance to tech-trance… It’s real fucking sweet! #02: Nuclear Ramjet – Down The Wall [134 BPM] Nuclear Ramjet (Felix-Antoine Richer & Max Chapados) is a long-running Canadian project which was started in 1997 with a blend of goa-trance and progressive trance – and that’s basically still what they are doing now in 2006 which also saw the release of their third album Mission To Sedna (Spaceport Records). This track is a mixture of raging tech-trance and electro + industrial elements… It has a somewhat melancholy feel to it – hidden behind the grim, urban rhythm section… Not bad at all, but parts of it seem a little too random for my taste… #03: Three Point Turn – Klush Kingdom [136 BPM] 3.Turn (Jocelyn Jaigirdar & Stéphane Hoareau) from France were among the frontrunners of psyTeKk during its heyday with the release of two albums and a bunch of wax + compilation tracks… And this is their first new track in close to three years! Wow! But these guys surely haven’t lost their touch – this is their usual minimal tech-trance with razor-sharp edges… Seemingly monotonous, but given some playtime, this track is actually pretty nice… It will most likely not go down well for home-listening, but as a DJ tool it has a couple of really nice moments… I just wish it was longer and the end seems very odd… #04: Kali-Frogz – Dismembered [135 BPM] Kali-Frogz (Eric Brandy & Christophe Fabulet) are also from France. Everything I’ve heard from them has been downbeat, so I’m not familiar with their dancefloor work… This track is lighter and much more versatile than the previous one – it’s actually pretty uplifting despite the gritty elements used here… Something like psychedelic space techno I guess… Minimal at times, maximal at others… Nice! #05: Triac – Versa [138 BPM] Michael Reznik (Morax) & Ilan Lanz from Israel have appeared on a lot of progressive compilations recently and their debut album is out soon… This track also draws on their roots in progressive trance, but in keeping with the theme of this compilation, the old tech-trance meter has been cranked up a notch or five… It’s still pretty slick though – despite the raw, gritty nature of the music… #06: Tao vs. Metalogic – Irrational Impulse (4x4 Mix) [138 BPM] New-comer Tao Nguyen teams up with fellow Canadian Frederik Hatsav who released his excellent techno album Magnetic Influence on Boshke Beats in 2005…The original version of this track was featured on both that album and on the Chronika Chapter Two compilation also released by Boshke. And much like Metalogic’s previous work, this is one hard-hitting track of teKkno!d proportions… The basis is a pounding bassline galloping away accompanied by some cut-up, irregular beats and rhythms… Banging indeed! Sadly I loose interest about halfway thru… #07: Authentik – Les 3 Machines [139 BPM] Authentik is another alias for Three Point Turn (Jocelyn Jaigirdar & Stéphane Hoareau). And I’m happy to say that this is much better than their previous track – this is fast-paced, nitty-gritty tech-trance complete with oil-drums, industrial percussion and a progressive construction… And most importantly – a healthy dose of groove! Awesome! #08: Spirallianz – BP Talk [142 BPM] Arne Schaffhausen & Wayan Raabe from Germany are among the top acts within tech-trance/minimal with their successful projects Spirallianz and Midi Miliz. Blast Food released on Spirit Zone in 2000 is still a milestone album and these guys have continued to create awesome music in recent years… The unconventional intro is trademark Spirallianz and tension is building right from the get go… The track itself is a mix of Kraftwerk-like electro-madness and full-blown techno-trance… And what a successful mix it is… This is HUGE track – instantly rewarding! #09: Tao – Pacific Intervention [138 BPM] Tao Nguyen is back with a solo track…And this is much more uplifting than his collaboration with Metalogic… This is somewhat clubby (though not cheesy) tech-trance with a very distinct drive and a subtle groove… Bouncy and bubbling – danceable and head-bob friendly… Pretty nice for a debut release, though it seems to become a tad too cluttered during the second half of the track… #10: Hidra – Fixed [140 BPM] AFAIK Hidra (Grabriel Petrin) is a debuting artist from Canada… What we get here is pure tech-trance complete with a deep groove and a touch of tribal drums… Not unlike the Authentik track really… It’s pretty groovy and I like most of it – I just wish it was a little longer, and that the variety was a little bigger… Not bad, but not an instant highlight either… #11: Toltech – Codigo Rojo [140 BPM] Due to a mix-up at the print shop, tracks #11 and #12 are reverse on the artwork. So this is in fact Toltech and not Axiomata…. Anyway, Toltech is Carlos Godinez and supposedly, this is his debut release… It’s very different from the previous tracks with its broad experimentation level – and despite its 140 BPM, it seems much faster… It’s very hectic and I have a hard time keeping up with this intense, stressful music… #12: Axiomata – New Normal (Remix) [138 BPM] From Toronto comes a track by Cold Groove Records label manager Jeremy Reid (DJ Yeb) who has released a couple of tracks already… And his experience doesn’t pass unnoticed, as this is a very mature track… The opening melodies are indeed lovely and they carry the track to higher levels… The blunt, analogue beats may be old school, but they fit the techy mood perfectly… Though slightly minimal, this track has a certain laidback aura that I really like… It’s very slick! A nice way to finish the compilation… Well colour me tech-tranced pink, if this isn’t a damn impressive debut release from Jester Records… Sure there are a couple of tracks that didn’t really do much for me, but luckily there are also a bunch of really awesome, non-conformist tracks here that I really enjoyed… For me this is a welcomed return of the tech-trance sound that seems to have been somewhat neglected in recent years… Sure there are still labels that push this sound, but unlike other psy sub-genres they are scarce… The artwork (which reminds me of the Atmos’ 2nd Brigade) is very cool and generally I have a good feeling about the future of this label – it’s destined for something big! I’ll recommend this compilation to both tech-trancers, but also prog-heads into technoid/crossover stuff… Fans of Boshke Beats/Cold Groove/G+ and similar should also take notice… Enjoy! ^ And a great track too, might I add... Journey'esque -
Ok ok, I wasn't the most articulate reviewer back then - and what the hell is up with giving something 8.1 in stead of 8? Haha... Anyway I just dusted this album off again and gave it a spin - and it still holds up pretty good... Sure it has aged, and the newer Midi Miliz/Spirallianz stuff is more sophisticated, but this still has some frekkin' awesome moments... It's a milestone album! Haha... It sure does! Both albums are great in their own right though - but as pure ownage, Blast Food does eat Classical Mushroom for breakfast! Radi's lost twin into tech-trance? /DP

V/A - Oxycanta Hi-res cover: front Artist: Various Title: Oxycanta - Electro atmospheric glides amidst emotional gardens Format: CD (digipack) Label: Ultimae Records (France) Cat. #: INRE 019 Distribution: Ultimae.com/network Date: Ultimo April 2006 Track listing: 01. 07’32” Ghostfriend - Moist 02. 08’57” Solar Fields – Detection (Partially Detected) 03. 05’25” Between Interval - Aerolith 04. 06’34” Aes Dana – Mineral Lights (Submerge Edit) 05. 10’00” Cell – Floatation Retention 06. 07’38” Asura – Galaxies Part 1 07. 06’40” Sync24 - Source 08. 07’55” Hybrid Leisureland – Trampoline Hotel 09. 06’52” Subgardens – Listen To The Flowers Grow (Aes Dana Remix) 10. 05’50” Omnimotion – Magic Tree Review: What becomes of the broken hearted? With Oxycanta the French powerhouse chill masters Ultimae marks their 19th release. Following the ambitious 2xCD release of the incredible Solar Fields albums Leaving Home and Extended it’s time for a compilation of mixed sorts. The tracklist reveals the usual Ultimae suspects + a bunch of unfamiliar names – just like we’re used to… And to ensure the previous sky-high quality standards, it’s all been compiled by Mahiane (aka. Sunbeam)… We’re in good hands – now let’s check out these electro atmospheric glides amidst emotional gardens… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Ghostfriend – Moist This is my first encounter with Ghostfriend which is a project run by the Swedish producer Krister Linder (of K, Solaroid, Tupilaq and Yeti fame) in corporation with Per Holm & Aleah. Combined, they’ve been producing ambient for over 10 years, and that’s apparent after listening to this… This is extremely well thought-out arctic downbeat… Northern ambient with a big splash of subtle percussion and dream-like sequencing… Floating pads and some very lush little melodies… Moist indeed! #02: Solar Fields – Detection (Partially Detected) The tracks fade into each other to secure a continuous flow, so we drift seamlessly into the next one. This track is an extract from the last track off the 2005 Solar Fields album Extended. With that album Swedish producer Magnus Birgersson took experimental downbeat to a new level, and much like the original this remake is an extension of its urban, avant-garde predecessor. A symbiosis of sound fusing melancholy ambient with interplanetary rhythms… Breaks, beats and urban ambience… Anyone familiar with the Extended album would know, that this may be perceived as introvert music at first, and thus it requires time to grow. But given time, this is a rare gem… Very journey’esque and very sweet! #03: Between Interval – Aerolith Stefan Jönsson (Monodrive/Sublunar) from Lund, Sweden also had a track on the Albedo compilation - a track that was an instant stand-out with its icy cold, dark ambient qualities… And sure enough, this track is very similar… Eerie melodies are constantly morphing into each other creating a very distinct, nocturnal atmosphere… Forget about percussion or bass – this is pure, unhampered beatless ambient… Again seemingly very introvert, but the gift of time elevates this track… #04: Aes Dana – Mineral Lights (Submerge Edit) Send in the cavalry!… Ultimae boss Vincent Villuis never seize to amaze me with his consistently high quality of exoteric downbeat… And this track is no exception! As usual the pace is quickening when Aes Dana makes an appearance and style wise we’re drifting from ambient into more chilled downtempo – most notable with the introduction of percussion as an integral part of the track… Rhythm-based, universal downbeat – with floating melodies and majestic harmonies… Wonderful! #05: Cell – Floatation Retention French Producer Alexandre Scheffer is another chill-heavyweight... His quality level is pretty much consistent, and lately I’ve been really enjoying his two tracks on the Floating Point 3 compilation released by Iboga Records’ chilled sub-label Sofa Beats… What we get here, is a trademark Cell track with its epic, story-telling qualities… A moving journey from ambient to upbeat chill and back again… All carried out with the greatest of ease – with some real impressive instrumentation too… A majestic, almost orchestral experience… Lush! #06: Asura – Galaxies Part 1 Asura is another one of my all-time fav’e chill projects... Both Asura albums are nothing short of amazing and have given me countless hours of satisfaction. Nowadays it’s a one-man project by Charles Farewell and it’s been way too long since I’ve heard anything from this Lyon-based magician… This is electrified world-beats – lush ethno electro of gargantuan dimensions… Epic, uplifting, mesmerizing, hypnotizing and – need I go on? This is, hands down, the best track here… The triumphant return of Asura! Simply marvellous! #07: Sync24 – Source Swedish producer Daniel Ringström (of Carbon Based Lifeforms fame) is another Ultimae regular who has yet to let me down with his distinct style of experimental, fused downbeat… And as usual, this part of the compilation marks the return to more chilled, laidback grooves… We’re slowly moving from eclectic, progressive downbeat into more sterile, floating ambient… #08: Hybrid Leisureland – Trampoline Hotel Apparently Japanese producer Hidetoshi Koizumi has been making music since 1995 – but this is my first encounter with his work… This track is anything but conventional – this is deeply experimental, electrified dark ambient… Dubby, heavily filtered, virtually beatless ambient with evident links to both electro, avant-garde and abstract electronica… And in that regard, this is maybe the most flow-breaking track off the CD. Actually it’s pretty out there! Not bad, but I have a somewhat hard time connecting to it… It’s not bad at all, but it’s not a fav’e either… #09: Subgardens – Listen To The Flowers Grow (Aes Dana Remix) Subgardens is a joint project between Cédric Desseaux & Mahiane – and this seemingly unreleased track is remixed by Vincent Villuis… And you can easily tell who’s behind this – this is trademark Ultimae ambient – rich, versatile and totally smooth… Floating soundscapes and atmospheric pads – carried out to near perfection… Brilliant! #10: Omnimotion – Magic Tree “Magic tree, please grow far above the clouds while I sleep on this branch so high up over ground. And there’s no turning back now…Tomorrow when I wake up, we’ve reached heaven.” Omnimotion is Stefan Lundaahl from Sweden who has released an album on Waveform Records and a bunch of compilation tracks on such great chill labels as Liquid Sound Design and Interchill… This is his Ultimae debut though – and also my first encounter with his music… As legend has it, we’re really chilling out on the closing track – and this is pure ambient with a distinct ethno-tribal touch to it… The guitar work is impressive, the vocals by Mimi are adorable and the track sounds very organic and mysterious… Pure magic! Another stellar Ultimae compilation comes to a halt – and once again I’m filled with satisfaction as the journey comes to an end… This is another above-average chill-out compilation by the leading chill label. The Ultimae compilation formula doesn’t surprise much any longer – it’s pretty much the same structurally and flow-wise, but why change a winning formula when it’s *this* good? There are no bad tracks here, and there’s only one track that I didn’t really dig – and a couple of tracks that took a while to get into… But it’s all good – literally! Especially the middle part of the compilation is extremely nice – and I keep dropping my jaw when listening to those gems. The quality level of the music continues in the artwork, and as usual we get a really slick, informative digipack with subtle artwork. All in all, a great package and a no-brainer purchase for the many members of the Ultimae Army… Fans of eclectic downbeat can also start, what will undoubtedly be, their life-long love affair with Ultimae here… Enjoy!
