Perfect Stranger – Learning = Change Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Perfect Stranger (Israel) Title: Learning = Change Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Iboga Records (Denmark) Cat. #: IBOGACD38 Distribution: twohandsdistribution.com Date: 13 March 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’28” Perfect Stranger – Starter 02. 08’31” Perfect Stranger – Dr. Feelgood 03. 08’03” Perfect Stranger – Morning Blues 04. 09’08” Perfect Stranger – Those Days 05. 08’21” Perfect Stranger – Hyperdrive 06. 08’39” Perfect Stranger feat. Emok – Truth 07. 09’00” Perfect Stranger – Nobody’s Perfect (Remix) 08. 10’39” Perfect Stranger feat. Zen Mechanics – Desert Session 09. 06’50” Schatsi – Radio Schatsi (Perfect Stranger Remix) .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/q5sxp (all tracks!) Review: The journey man… Israeli producer, DJ and party person Yuli Fersthat has been an integral part of our beloved scene for years… His first release was in 1998 under his BLT moniker and back then it was melodic goa trance with a twist… As time progressed and four albums were released, Yuli slowly shifted direction onto more progressive sounds, and eventually he became closely associated with the Danish powerhouse prog-label Iboga Records… He compiled the lovely Set/4 _Essentials and the recent Hibernation compilations. His Perfect Stranger alias emerged somewhere in early 2005 and after three VERY lovely tracks released on Iboga compilations, now it’s finally time for a full album… Yuli’s fifth, but Perfect Stranger’s first which I’ve been looking forward to ever since it was announced… Let’s dig in! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Perfect Stranger – Starter The aptly named opening track doesn’t waste any time on a boring, pretentious intro – this is floating, organic hybrid trance right from the get-go… Trademark Yuli with his combination of uplifting morning sounds and tighter progressive rhythms… This is a melodic afternoon groover complete with epic, melodic pads and tightly-knit, bang-on percussion… A very groovy and very tasty track… Maybe not the best PS track ever, but still pretty damn enjoyable… #02: Perfect Stranger – Dr. Feelgood “Dropping back into normal space…” Ahh yes, this is all about feeling good… This is melodic, fluffy morning trance with the typical PS progressive take on things… Reminds me of Antix or Protoculture, and as such I can’t help shake the feeling that this is maybe a little too sugar-coated… Don’t get me wrong, we’re still far from Sonic Cube-like commercial cheddar, but there are elements of this track that would appeal to the club crowd… Pretty good, but I still feel like the album hasn’t REALLY started yet… #03: Perfect Stranger – Morning Blues As the title suggests, we’re still in morning trance territory here – but as predicted, the album is slowly increasing pace… This is another extremely well-produced track – rich, slow progressing melodic morning trance with hints of psy, electro and progressive house…The vox are a bit clubby, but Yuli excels in never crossing the line fully and this would be the perfect transition track between an epic clubby tune and a more edgy progressive stomper… Simply lovely! #04: Perfect Stranger – Those Days And we’re getting closer to full-blown party mode now… This track crawls up on you like a hot blanket or a solid dose of MDMA… Without really noticing it, all of a sudden we’re completely soaked up by this subtle, electro-ridden little number… Ear candy if there ever was ear candy – so subtle, so refined, so frekkin’ sweet… The last run-down is just PURE bliss! =D #05: Perfect Stranger – Hyperdrive Halfway thru the album we’re exposed to a trademark PS hybrid tune… Tribal percussion, dubby background pads and sharp electro-hisses are accompanied by the hardest bassline thus far… All kept within a framework of progressive morning trance beautifully executed by Yuli… The sheer magnitude of this hypnotic tune is very impressive… It’s kinda simple really, but very effective at the same time… #06: Perfect Stranger feat. Emok – Truth On this track Yuli is joined by Emok (Mikael Dahlgaard from Phony Orphants) and that makes for an interesting collaboration. Contrary to what I’d expected it seems that Emok brings both some underground edge AND some fluffy melodies to the track… Yeah, this is another very distinct hybrid tune that fuses feather light, naïve melodies with well-defined, edgy tech-trance and electro elements… Totally PsyBooty! Generally I like this, though the middle passage seems a little too epic for my taste… Luckily it picks up again as the track progresses and the electro-infested, reverb-soaked final rundown is nothing short of perfection! #07: Perfect Stranger – Nobody’s Perfect (Remix) In its original form, this track was on the 2005 Iboga Records compilation Set/4 _Essentials… That was a pretty good track, though not the strongest PS track I’ve heard… This remix seems to up the ante though… It’s still crystal clear, tight percussion – with phat electro elements, tribal percussion and an overall organic atmosphere… The remix seems more club-friendly and will works absolute wonders during the peaks hours of a progressive set… As the original, this remix really explodes during the last couple of minutes when Yuli tears open his goodie bag… Sweet! #08: Perfect Stranger feat. Zen Mechanics – Desert Session On this tour de force track Yuli is joined by Dutch producer Wouter Thomassen who is a multitalented producer of both downtempo and upbeat party music… And obviously this track belongs in the latter category… This is a true journey track that evolves from simple, minimal electro trance to full-blown progressive mayhem… Dancefloor napalm so to speak! So rich; so versatile and so amazingly groovy… I dare anyone NOT to move to this! A stellar track! #09: Schatsi – Radio Schatsi (Perfect Stranger Remix) Schatsi is a project by Israeli producers Yoni Oshrat (Psysex, Ace Ventura, etc) & Corin Kiser and this PS remix has been unreleased for quite some time… Anyway, as you might have guessed this is the traditional oddball track of the album… Like flipping the dial on a radio, this track browses thru a number of different genres within electronic music – a hybrid track if there ever was one… And as with most PS tracks, the last half is by far the most interesting – and an interesting contrast to the somewhat commercial first part… A pretty neat tune – I just wish it was longer… What an album! I’m happy to say that this album is everything that I expected – and it’s as good as I’d hoped for… There are no bad tracks here and the stand-out tracks are many… Yes, some of his tracks have commercial, fluffy elements, but those moments are always balanced out by edgy, genre-bending, experimental parts. I’d prefer this over Antix, Gaudium, Insane Creation or Sonic Cube ANY day! Yuli is the master of journey tracks and the progression in his tracks is unsurpassed by few in our scene… It’s the ever sought-after story telling which I like so much! Brilliant! Learning equals change… That’s very true, and in retrospect Yuli’s change from full-on’ish trance to much more versatile hybrid trance seems like a very successful learning experience… I for one wouldn’t want it any other way… This is a VERY ripe album that compasses the very distinct sound that Yuli has refined and defined in recent years… It’s as mature as it is cutting edge! The cover art by Bakke (Spiral Trax) is absolutely gorgeous and as always with Iboga, you really get your money’s worth here… This album gets two thumbs up from me – it’s a safe purchase for any fan of rich, versatile progressive/morning/hybrid trance and it doubles as both a valuable DJ tool and as a living room favourite. Enjoy! Favourites: 3, 4(!), 5, 6(!), 7, 8(!!) Well, it's pretty straightforward pop rock, but it's DAMN nice... "Closing Time" is one of my signature tunes when I DJ... If it fits the flow, I usually close my sets with it... Another fav'e Semisonic tune is "Secret Smile" which my possibly be one of the most romantic tracks of the late 1990ies... And it reminds me of a special girl ... It will always remind me of this special girl...

Sonic Cube - Filter Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Sonic Cube (Swizterland) Title: Filter Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Tribal Vision Records (Czech Republic) Cat. #: TVRCD007 Distribution: Psyshop.net Date: February 2006 Track listing: 01. 07’52” Hide 02. 07’35” Last Jedi (feat. Sonnenvakuum) 03. 08’27” Cloud Buster (Album Mix) 04. 08’55” Amnesia 05. 07’21” Test 06. 07’57” Danger 07. 07’35” Microbes 08. 09’09” Xcute 09. 05’31” Astray (feat. Sabrina) .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/pc3mm (all tracks!) Review: Hands-in-the-air, cocktail trance, cheddar and a broken jedi… Filter is the second album by the Swiss project Sonic Cube (aka. Sonnenvakuum) which nowadays consists of Daniel Müller & Ueli Schill. (Tobi Wirz left the project to concentrate on his housy Greed-project). Most of the stuff I’ve heard from these guys has been smooth, well-polished progressive house/trance – though a few tracks have had the ever-sought-after-by-me ‘edge’. With this second album I’m hoping we’ll get more of that edge… The fact that it’s released by the very upfront Tribal Vision label would also indicate something totally fresh… Let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Hide [125 BPM] “When light comes down on me, when darkness shines on you…” The opening track is huuuuuuge! This is majestic stuff - wide span progressive trance with a deep, funky rhythm section and floating, groovy melodic pads… If you were to describe this track with one single word, ‘phat’ would cut it… It’s not edgy, in fact it’s even pretty clubby with the vox and the hands-in-the-air appeal, but somehow it just works wonders… A really nice tune! #02: Last Jedi (feat. Sonnenvakuum) [134 BPM] “I have come for the jedi… They are all dead… In search of the jedi... And one broken jedi cannot stop the darkness that is to come.” Haha – what the HELL is up with those Engrish lyrics? What the hell is a broken jedi? Haha! Guys, I dunno what you’re trying to achieve, but those lyrics are downright horrible… And what crazy gimmick is ‘featuring Sonnenvakuum’ anyway? That’s like ‘me featuring myself’! Anyway, the track itself is much faster than the previous afternoon groover… This is stripped down progressive trance without a lot else going on that what we’re used to hearing… Reminds me of Insane Creation or Sensifeel… Not bad at all, but not special either… #03: Cloud Buster (Album Mix) [135 BPM] Cloud Buster was released as an EP in late 2005 – it featured a fantastic André Absolut remix which was also on the 2005 Tribal Vision compilation Street Art. But hey, the original is pretty damn fantastic too – this is a monstrous tune… Rich, phat and totally groovy… The thunder FX adds to the overall excitement and this is a certified dancefloor bomb… Very smooth and instantly rewarding! #04: Amnesia [134 BPM] Next up is another morning tune with a strong emphasis on tribal percussion and nifty little uplifting melodies… It’s all very nice and well-polished, but unfortunately it lacks a little bite… Not bad at all, but sadly a little too forgettable… I tend to skip this track… #05: Test [135 BPM] But luckily things pick up again on this electro-infested little house number… That’s right, this is electro-house which crosses over into progressive trance – or maybe the other way around, I don’t know!? What I do know is that this track has the ‘edge’ I was looking for earlier, and that’s obviously a good thing…The voice-samples are a bit tacky, but the retro-cool synths totally make up for that… This reminds me of Meller and/or D-Nox & Beckers and similar acts… It’s real pleasant! =D #06: Danger [135 BPM] Next up is a much more wide-appealing track… This is epic club trance with a very strong emphasis on driving, twirling melodies… And yeah, not as edgy as I like… This is for the clubbers, and as such a little too commercial for my taste… #07: Microbes [132 BPM] More dancefloor material here, but I’m happy to report that this is much less cheese filled... This is focussed, driving progressive trance with a pinch of electro-house… A very uplifting tune that is just dying to be played out loud at a sunny beach party… This is cocktail trance! Cheers! #08: Xcute [128 BPM] *Sigh* I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise any longer, but this is another very commercial, clubby outfit of a track... Technically this could have been a very sweet tune and it’s very similar to track #1 in construction with its huge melodic pads and majestic appearance… And sure, this is very nicely produced music… Lush, plush and uplifting… I just wish they’d upped the edge-factor and toned down the cheese… #09: Astray (feat. Sabrina) [66 BPM] Just like on the recent Flowjob album we get a closing track that revolves around female singing – only difference is that this is a VERY laidback, downbeat track… And just like the Flowjob track, the actually music is pretty damn cool – but it’s totally destroyed by the vocals which are mediocre at best… Argh, finally some edge, and it’s soiled by those crappy vocals… ;o/ It really, really, REALLY pains me to say this, but this is the worst Tribal Vision release so far… Don’t get me wrong, there are still some excellent tunes here, but overall this album wasn’t as ‘edgy’ as I’d hoped for and the good tracks kinda drown amongst the commercial tracks… In that sense this reminds me of the Gaudium and Insane Creation albums… It’s all quality music, but the clubby moments are too many for my tastes… The cover art is also very unlike what we’re used to with Tribal Vision, but I guess in a sense it fits the somewhat commercial music pretty well… So, to conclude: Besides from the few stand-out tracks listed below, this album is probably not gonna get a lot of playtime in my house – but on the other hand I’m sure it’ll go down very well with fans of progressive trance that crosses well over into club territory… Cos in that genre, this album is definitely a hit! … Enjoy! Actually I don't have Boldy Audio, I just assumed it was a Schlabbaduerst-like CD-R? Anyway, when Derango-Jens approached me a couple of days ago, he specifically told me 'we´ve put some more expensives on this V/A, which means that it´s NOT a CD-R.'... So by that + the Discogs entry, I assumed that Boldly Audio was a CD-R? /DP

Fair enough... haha! There's a copy on its way to Denmark too... Sent two days ago, so I'm kinda hoping it'll arrive tomorrow... Oh, and this time it's not just a CDR - is a properly pressed CD... I can't wait... /DP

So you found out about it 35 minutes ago, and now you already have it? How fast is the Swedish postal service? Are we gonna see Swedish postal workers in olympic short track distances any time soon?

^ Please re-read these guidelines for the review forums... We've been deleting A LOT of offtopic talk in the reviews recently... So please, keep offtopic in offtopic... You are VERY welcome to comment on releases, but pointless one-liners as "I'm looking forward to this", "nice review", "I downloaded this, so far it seems cool" or "1/10 this sucks" aren't really helpful... You're welcome to say pretty much whatever you want, but please put at least a little consideration into the comments... Thanks! /DP

V/A – ServeEm2wice Hi-res front + back Artist: Various Title: ServeEm2wice Format: CD (jewel case) Label: PsyBooty (USA) Cat. #: PBCD002CD Distribution: Arabesque Date: 27 March 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’45” Equisol - Mokoko 02. 09’01” M-Field - Grokwave 03. 09’11” Behind Blue Eyes – Rumble In The Jungle (Vacuum Stalkers Remix) 04. 06’42” Etienne – This Moment In Time 05. 06’55” prophei – sickly fantastic 06. 08’05” ProSect – In Styled 07. 06’31” Duca - Pozitiva 08. 09’12” M-Field - Focus 09. 08’54” Sound Field – Passion Session .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/pboow (all tracks!) Review: Twice the edge, balls and mojo… The PsyBooty label, based in San Francisco, is out with their second crossover compilation. The first one, Get The Lead Out, was released in the summer of 2005 and despite the very enthusiastic reviews it got, I’ve not yet had the pleasure of shaking my psybooty to it… From what I’ve understood though, PsyBooty gave birth to a whole new sound that fused progressive trance with a wide array of electronic genres… Cool! I can’t wait to dig deeper into this… Let’s! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Equisol - Mokoko First up is Equisol (US-based producer Steven Fava) who was also on the first PsyBooty compilation… He kicks things in gear with a subtle-yet-playful Aussie-sounding progressive groover… Kinda lo-fi at times, but immensely melodic at others – like a slightly techier version of Antix… Sexy, sizzling-hot beach house progressive trance with a pinch of electro-lime… Not bad at all, but I could have wished for some peaks or climaxes for further enjoyment… But I guess this is meant as a groovy, afternoon DJ tool and it’s a damn nice one too… #02: M-Field – Grokwave M-Field is a collaboration between Jay Indigom and label DJ Rob-ot (Rob Watson) and this track is a taster from their upcoming debut album… This track is deep, funky, electrified progressive trance – with a whole lot of edge, balls and mojo! So yeah, kinda like Phony Orphants and Beat Bizzarre, this is rich progressive trance with deep roots in tech-trance… I can’t pinpoint it any closer, but this is a really sweet and hypnotizing track… #03: Behind Blue Eyes – Rumble In The Jungle (Vacuum Stalkers Remix) BBE is the newly established project from Danish producers Michael Abel-Larsen (aka. Iboga Records label boss Banel) & Rene Nielsen (one half of Beat Bizarre). Rumble was one of the most maximal and majestic tracks off their debut album Behind Blue Eyes released last year – and here’s the Vacuum Stalkers remix… I haven’t heard much from these Russian producers (Daniel Roeth & Vladimir Sedov) except from their tasty downtempo alias Koan. Anyway, unlike the original this remix is pretty much in full effect right from the get-go – and we’re really digging deep into funky Russian progressive tech-trance… The epic, uplifting elements from the original are somewhat intact and they help balance the track out nicely – and I’d say that this track easily compasses the PsyBooty signature sound… Delicious! #04: Etienne – This Moment In Time American act Etienne has a vast musical background in metal, punk and industrial and has recently crossed over into psy-territory… It’s easy to hear that this track draws musical inspiration from the genres mentioned earlier, as this is a melting pot of styles kept within a framework of progressive psychedelia… An electro-ridden tour de force into driving, banging psytrance with a major splash of minimal, teKkno and progressive trance… It’s maybe not as easily accessible as the previous track, but given some time this is a very rewarding, razor-sharp track… Nice! #05: prophei – sickly fantastic This is the infamous guy who made the single dAATh remixed by Hallucinogen! Yikes! Anyway, this American producer of industrial, pop and psytrance has cooked up and full-power crossover tune… The old weird-as-fuck meter has been cranked up and this is easily the most bizarre track here… IDM’esque passages are accompanied by bouncy basslines, twirling melodies and freaky synth-lines… The sexy voice samples were supposedly recorded live and ‘in the flesh’ and I cannot even begin to imagine what kind of fetish-event that took place at… But yeah, this is maximal, eclectic dance music… It’s definitely very unique, but parts of it are simply too hectic for my taste… But an interesting track nevertheless and I’m sure it’ll grow on me… #06: ProSect – In Styled “Got to know my style!” ProSect is Ukrainian-born, Israeli-based producer Andy Yakovlev (Sonify) who has yet to let me down with his VERY diverse production talent… The crossover maestro! And sure enough, this track is another excursion into multi flavoured, eclectic electronica… This is as much sweaty house as it is uplifting, epic club-trance – and everything in between! The sound-spectre is full and if it wasn’t for the somewhat silly voice-sample, this would have been one of the best track here… But hey, it’s still a frekkin excellent choon! So yeah, another fav’e from ProSect… Brilliant! #07: Duca – Pozitiva Duca is Dusan Sekic from Serbia who has released a full album + a bunch of compilation tracks under his Anax alias… I liked his hard-hitting, yet totally funky and tribal track on the 2005 Organic Records compilation Invasion From Hyperspace. This track is not as hard as his Anax tracks, but it’s even funkier! This track is like a fusion between Balaeric club-trance and rich, sweaty progressive house not unlike Insane Creation… Nice and glowing, but somehow also a little too well-polished compared to some of the previous tracks… It lacks a little ‘bite’ somehow! Another DJ transition tool I guess… #08: M-Field – Focus M-Field is back with another hypnotizing, though a little less teKky tune… But besides from that, this tune is very similar to their previous track… Fast-paced, electro/tech-house rolled up in a mouth-watering progressive trance spliff… And nice and enjoyable tune, though there’s nothing overly groundbreaking going on here… #09: Sound Field – Passion Session Andy Yakovlev (ProSect) is joined by fellow Israli producer Liron Atia (one half of The Poofs) on another hybrid track. I really liked their joyous track off the 2005 Oxygen Records compilation Parsec… And yes, this is another uplifting, sunrise track… Complete with acoustic and electric guitars + floating melodies + a VERY impressive rhythm section… Normally I’m not the biggest fan of epic, cheesy stuff, but when it’s cooked up by these guys I have to surrender… This is AWESOME! Beautiful music that crosses well into club land, but never gets cheesy! Now that’s an accomplishment! Stellar track! Once, twice, three times a compilation! Yeah, this surely is one of the most versatile compilations I’ve heard in a while… With only nine tracks this compilation spans from epic/uplifting house and trance over technoid, pounding industrial psytrance to gritty, electro-ridden progressive trance… An wide array of musical styles and sub-genres. And that’s all done without throwing the flow or clashing styles! Hell, I’m impressed by that accomplishment alone, and that’s without mentioning the sheer magnitude of some of these tracks! Musically we’re really being spoilt here. There are no bad tracks here, and with only a couple of less-great tracks, this is easily worth a purchase. The cover art is stylish and everything reeks quality on this excellent release! Fans of diverse hybrid-trance need to check this out – pronto! Now go shake your PsyBooty…Enjoy!
