I wasn't too impressed by that one... But in all fairness, I must say it hasn't been near my CD player for more than two years... Maybe it's time to dust it off again soon... Took me a while to fully appreciate, but it's pretty damn nice... The Zodiac Youth + Zen Lemonade tracks are so sweet! Good, without being amazing... Easily better than Twin Coast Discovery! Nice batch indeed... You'll not be dissapointed! /DP

Filteria - Heliopolis Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Filteria (Sweden) Title: Heliopolis Format: CD (digipack/jewel case) Label: Suntrip Records (France/Belgium) Cat. #: SUNCD04 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 10 February 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’27” Filteria – Unfiltered (Moon Remix) 02. 09’16” Filteria feat. Red Gravity – Speech Module 03. 10’01” Filteria - Reflected 04. 10’43” Filteria – Mind Expansion (Short Version) 05. 08’57” Filteria - Pyrogen 06. 08’42” Filteria – Rotate To Vibrate 07. 10’05” Crop Circles - Lunar Civilization (Filteria's Higher Remix) 08. 10’31” Filteria – Cloud Kingdom (Solar Fields Remix) .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/m2d7s (all tracks!) Review: Ἡλίου πόλις Swedish producer Jannis ‘Filteria’ Tzikas has fast become synonymous with the recent resurrection of modern goa trance. His first album Sky Input released in 2004 was a tornado of fresh air with its highly melodic, multilayered, climactic and cascading goa trance sound, whereas his output on the 2005 Suntrip Records compilation Apsara showed an even deeper, more edgy side to Filteria. And now the second album is ready, with the help of a few outside contributors… I’ve been drooling for this ever since it was announce and now it’s finally time to take another trip down Filteria Lane… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Filteria – Unfiltered (Moon Remix) [146 BPM] “Can you tell us anything else about these artefacts? They are a kind of organic technology, limited energy, in other to achieve mobility they have to graft themselves onto another life form!” The opening track picks up right were Sky Input left off, and besides from the Crop Circles remix, this is perhaps the most evident Pleiadians-like track… It’s a huge cornucopia of flaring melodies, raging acid lines and more climaxes than I dare to count… In other words, this is more full-on than 700 Eskimo albums will ever be… Woow, what a start to the album – this is a marvellous track! #02: Filteria feat. Red Gravity – Speech Module [144 BPM] This track was made by Jannis in cahoots with some dude called Petrus Leo – and his touch really shines thru here. Somehow this reminds me much more off ancient masters like Transwave, The Infinity Project, Prana and so on… The melodies and the synth lines are less refined, and it appears every single melodic stab has been sugar coated… I never thought I’d heard myself say this, but this is too cheesy and I have a hard time coping with it… Yikes! #03: Filteria – Reflected [145 BPM] But luckily Jannis hasn’t lost it completely… Far from it in fact, as this has got to be one of the most interesting tracks here… What we get here is very refined goa trance that is as much as party track is it story telling… The full-on melodies are subtle, yet totally effective and we actually get passages without wall-to-wall screeching… The pitch changes and key changes are effective and I wouldn’t want it any other way… The evolution in this track is brilliant and this has got to be the most mature Filteria track to date… Awesome! #04: Filteria – Mind Expansion (Short Version) [146 BPM] Calling this ‘short’ must be the over-statement of the year (The long version is 15 minutes btw!)… Anyway, this is another sure fit party choon reminiscent of the full-on goa era of the nineties… The nostalgia is coming out the woodwork and this tune really takes me back to the golden age… Acid-ridden, driving, emotional goa trance – rich on so many levels… Synth galore! Guaranteed to tear ANY dancefloor apart… Wonderful! #05: Filteria – Pyrogen [142 BPM] And if you thought the previous track was old-school, just wait until you hear this… This is like a virtual time machine teleporting you back 10 years… Style wise, this is still very full-on, uplifting, bright goa trance drenched in acid stabs and 303s… And despite the ‘low’ BPM rating, this actually feels like one of the fastest tracks here, and I think it suffers a little from a too chaotic structure… Not a bad track at all, but I could have wished for a little more story telling here… But hey, still a pretty damn tasty choon… #06: Filteria – Rotate To Vibrate [144 BPM] The next track seems a little darker… Don’t get me wrong, this is still very much uplifting Filteria trance, but the bass seems just a tad more nocturnal here… Like the last track to be played before the sunrise… Flaring, raging multi-climactic melodies competing for the listeners attention and I can vividly imagine how overwhelming this track must sound under the influence… Not for the faith-hearted, but definitely for me… ;o) #07: Crop Circles - Lunar Civilization (Filteria's Higher Remix) [147 BPM] “Personally, I'm convinced that there must be many, many higher civilizations in this enormous and incredibly ancient universe of ours!” It’s no secret that Jannis has drawn heavily on Pleiadians for inspiration – and after the success of his first album, he even visited the EtnicaNet studios on Ibiza and created music… I’m guessing it’s that Etnica-link, that carved the opportunity for Jannis to remix one of the most timeless goa classics ever; Lunar Civilization by Crop Circles (Pleiadians + Lotus Omega). Messing with such a nostalgic track would usually be considered sacrilege, but if anyone could pull it off, it’s Jannis… The original track does sound a little dated after nine years, but with this remix Jannis has managed to update it with 2006 production techniques… And it sounds fresher than ever! A rich, colourful, kaleidoscopic testament to the fact that goa trance will never fade… Never! #08: Filteria – Cloud Kingdom (Solar Fields Remix) [95 BPM] And now for something completely new in Filteria terminology: A downbeat remix… Made by fellow Swede Magnus Birgersson, who is one of my fav’e Ultimae chill-out producers… And he sure doesn’t let me down here, with this electro-magnetic downbeat piece… It’s a hybrid of digital and organic sounds, which sends the mind wandering thru the cloud kingdom… Epic, static and totally peaceful… Magical! My main gripe with Sky Input was the intensity level… When I reviewed it, I used an analogy from the American Beauty movie; ‘Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in!’… Basically, that’s still true… This *is* a very intense album it can be very overwhelming… But by now, you should know what you’re getting into when listening to a Filteria album… And with that in mind, this album is a little masterpiece in its own right… It’s not exactly a quantum leap since the first album, but Jannis has indeed matured his sound in many aspects… Especially when it comes to story telling and structural improvements… Picking the best among the two albums is not an easy task, but if you point a gun at me, I’d say Heliopolis is slightly better… But they are both gargantuan albums in their own right! The cover art by Ukiro is by far the coolest I’ve seen so far on Suntrip Records, and it pays homage to the classic Matsuri covers… It’s beautiful! All in all, this is an amazing album – there are no bad tracks here, and there are a handful of instant classics that kicks the shit out of everything full-on released since Sky Input… A benchmark album that will crack smiles in several years to come! It gets my highest recommendations! …Enjoy! V/A – Kodama Artist: Various Title: Kodama (Compiled by DJ So) Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Plusquam Records (Germany) Cat. #: PQR 111 CD Distribution: twohandsdistribution.com Date: 11 February 2006 Track listing: 01. 07’19” Decoy – Cat Magic 02. 08’50” Sensient - Dissolve 03. 06’32” FREq - Sunglider 04. 07’44” Bitmonx vs. Fabio – Deep Sense 05. 07’59” Earsugar - Foretaste 06. 09’47” Fitalic – My Destiny 07. 08’07” Ryan Halifax - Chocolate 08. 07’45” André Absolut – Lost And Found Review: 木霊 In Japanese folklore, the komoda are the nature spirits that live within all aspects of nature, primarily trees and rocks. Subsequently, it’s also the new Plusquam compilation compiled by DJ SO – godfather of the progressive Yakuza in Japan… Plusquam has fast become one of my fav’e labels within rich, danceable progressive trance, and judging by the tracklist here, we’re in for another treat… Will this live up to the expectations? … The answer is blowing in the wind! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Decoy - Cat Magic [136 BPM] The Australian duo Decoy (Philip Rex & Ian Chaplin) recently released their debut album Not Responding To Light on Dance N Dust… And this opening track is very similar to the sound of the album, with its smooth, silky-soft, progressive trance… ‘Soft’ is both the keyword, and the ultimate drawback, as I’m afraid this is a little too cheesy for my taste… It’s not bad; it’s just a little tame… Your mileage may vary though… #02: Sensient - Dissolve [138 BPM] But do not despair – Sensient is here! Aussie producer Tim Larner has an impressive roster of releases, and especially his compilation tracks on Groove Zone Records have impressed me a great deal… And yes, this is another corker! The pace has quickened and gone are the slightly boring, cheesy tendencies from the opening track… This is full-blown party trance to be played during the peak hours of a nocturnal progressive party… Rich, edgy and dirty-as-hell progressive trance… The psychedelic influences are just right and basically I *have* to move to this amazing tune… Brilliant! #03: FREq - Sunglider [138 BPM] The third consecutive Aussie act on this compilation is none other than my personal hero FREq… Despite his rather hefty output, Mr. Gallagher always delivers the goods… And this track is no exception – this is trademark FREq = Awesome, rich, deep progressive trance soaked in reverbs! Maybe it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel, but who cares when it’s this good? Pure dancefloor fodder… Another instant FREq classic! #04: Bitmonx vs. Fabio - Deep Sense [136 BPM] And now for some hi-quality German progressive trance… Sascha Haske (one half of Buzzmonx) teams up with country man Fabio Fusco (one half of Fusi & Johnson)… These guys rarely let me down, and especially Mr. Haske has produced some of the grooviest progressive trance Germany has to offer… And groovy is just what this track is – it’s unmistakable Plusquam sounding and what it lacks in innovation, it makes up for in sheer groove-magnitude… It’s a phat wall of rolling progressive sounds which is as deep as it is bouncy… Brilliant! #05: Earsugar - Foretaste [135 BPM] Earsugar is a new collaboration between Swiss producers Nicola Capobianco (DJ Loudness/Liquid Soul) and Martin Knecht (Mikrokosmos). Especially Liquid Soul has released some real sweet compilation tracks, and I’m happy to report that this is indeed ‘ear sugar’… It’s not as massive as the previous three tracks, but it’s easily as uplifting… The first thing I noticed when sampling this track, was the very impressive vocal work – those distinct voice samples work really great! A solid, laidback progressive cruiser… #06: Fitalic - My Destiny [130 BPM] Dutch producer Robin Fitter has an impressed number of releases under his belt, but for some reason I only know his slightly boring, epic remix of Antix’ Little Honey… And yeah, this is indeed one of the most epic, fluffy and melodic tunes here... But at least it’s got *some* edge and for the most part I find myself enjoying this quite a lot… It’s nice to have some uplifting melodies that don’t cross fully over into club-trance… It’s good, but it’s not a stand-out track… #07: Ryan Halifax - Chocolate [130 BPM] The few tracks I’ve heard from Alexander Schaumann have been very diverse, but all very, very bouncy… And the bounce is bouncier than ever here… This is bottomless-pit-deep progressive trance with very distinct house- and electro-influences… Very lush and instantly head bob friendly… I’m totally digging it! #08: André Absolut - Lost And Found [127 BPM] André Absolut from Switzerland is well-known and respected progressive/tech house producer and DJ with a bunch of releases on various labels… I really like his deep, mysterious tech-house style and though this track isn’t among his darkest, it’s still pretty damn banging… The rhythm section is impressive with all its groove appeal… It may appear simple, but dig a little deeper and this track will keep you entertained for long enough… Nice indeed! Well I’ll be damned, if Plusquam hasn’t gone and released another essential compilation… With the exception of a couple of pretty-good-but-not-great tracks, this compilation is packed to the rim with stellar choons… DJ So sure knows what he’s doing and I’m really impressed with the track selection here… Well done! Also, this is the perfect tool for both sofa-trancing and for trancefloor dancing… Easily worth the money! The cover is simple, but has all the relevant information you’d need… All in all, this is a great package and so far it’s the best compilation of 2006! Yeah, that’s right! Plusquam fans needs to get off their asses and buy this – and fans of groovy, dancefloor friendly progressive trance in general should definitely look into it! It’s brilliant! …Enjoy! Electrypnose - Le Tireur De Ficelles Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Electrypnose (Switzerland) Title: Le Tireur De Ficelles Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Peak Records (Switzerland) Cat. #: PR008 Distribution: Arabesque Date: March 2006 Track listing: 01. 06’57” Electrypnose - The Handler 02. 06’46” Electrypnose - Gidi Fake 03. 07’43” Electrypnose - Niapo 04. 07’41” Electrypnose - B2P2 05. 08’52” Elendil - Oz (Electrypnose Remix) 06. 06’25” Electrypnose - Stupid Moons 07. 06’33” Electrypnose - Disfunction 08. 07’27” Cerebral Factory – Cerebral Factory 09. 08’05” Electrypnose - Le Tireur De Ficelles 10. 07’02” Electrypnose - Brain Surgery 11. 03’19” Electrypnose - Bas Les Masques .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/fj8r3 (all tracks!) Review: The Puppet Master… Swiss power house label Peak Records is out with its 8th release which doubles as the first full artist album… And who better to do the honours, than fellow Swiss resident Electrypnose? Vince Le Barde has yet to let me down, and in my reviews over the years I’ve often praised him for his unique, unconformity, underground psytrance… The debut album Brain Stretching released in 2005 by ResonantEarth.com was a blast and every single compilation track I’ve heard from Vince has kicked some royal ass… So hell yeah, I’m excited about this second album… Let’s dig in! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Electrypnose - The Handler [148 BPM] “The years he spent in isolation have not equipped him with the tools necessary to judge right from wrong. He's had no contacts. He's been completely without guidance. Furthermore, his work, the garden sculptures, hairstyles and so forth, indicates that he's a highly imaginative character. It seems clear that his awareness of what we call reality is radically underdeveloped!” The opening track sets the mood with some eerie, haunting church bells sampled to oblivion… A lengthy and trippy sample from Edward Scissorhands adds to the spooky atmosphere and after a couple of minutes we’re complete soaked into the eerie world of Electrypnose… Edgy, eerie and dark – but with enough acid bits and pieces to keep me entertained… Brilliant! #02: Electrypnose - Gidi Fake [146 BPM] “Doctor, we have a successful fusion of reaction! […] Everyone here is mad. I'm mad, you're mad; it's only by chance or careful planning if you're not. How do you know I'm mad? Because you're here, and everyone here, is mad!” The next tracks samples Alice In Wonderland which is altogether one of the most trippy stories ever… The acid-level has been raised, and we’re in full-blown night trance territory now… Heavily syncopated acid-stabs make out the base of track and they are surrounded by all kinds of twirling FX and computer game samples… Mad indeed, but oooh so good… #03: Electrypnose – Niapo [148 BPM] “Here’s Johnny!” Another weird-as-fuck IDM intro turns into trademark Electrypnose psychedelia… I swear there are more layers here than I dare to count – and the trip factor is off the chart! Hell yeah, this is like Derango vs. Procs vs. Aphex Twin vs. Autechre… Can you imagine that combo? Well, listen to this track and sample the sweet nectar of sonic LSD! Intense yes, but totally trip-tastic too… I’m digging this track loads! #04: Electrypnose - B2P2 [147 BPM] “You helped me get here, but my question is ‘why’? Where is this going? Where does it end? I don't know. You don't know, or you won't tell me? I told you before, no one can see beyond a choice they don't understand. And I mean no one. What choice? It doesn't matter!” This is less weird, but we’re still deep in the Swiss underground… The acid is flowing freely and we’re exposed to a lethal dose of heavily tweaked synth lines, digital drops and electronic farts… The energy level is simply impressive and I double dare anyone not to move to this… The samples from The Matrix Revolutions are not too original, but I guess they are kinda retro-cool… Not the most exciting track here, but it’s still a solid, wholesome piece of Electrypnose wizardry… ;o) #05: Elendil - Oz (Electrypnose Remix) [148 BPM] Elendil is an unsigned Swiss project by one of Vince’s mates… As a frequent guest in the Electrypnose studios, this local act caught Vince’s attention with this track – so it was decided that a remix would fit this album…. And I agree! I haven’t heard the original, so I can’t really tell what was changed, but what we’re left with here is a nice little acid-ripper of a night track… Nothing too complicated is going on here – it’s just good old-fashioned psytrance packed with twirling acid-lines and medieval melodies… I guess in a way, this is similar to The Misted Muppet – only darker! So yeah, this is perhaps the most melodic track off the album, so in a sense we’re kinda chilling out here… Chilling out at 148 beats per minute that is… It took me a while to fully appreciate, but now I dig it – and it’s just example of Vince’s diverse musical talent... #06: Electrypnose - Stupid Moons [149 BPM] After the melodic ‘break’ it’s time for some more underground madness… The rhythm section here is totally irregular – and a lot of fun! Good luck mixing this one! As always, Vince relies heavily on sampling and within the first couple of minutes there are at least 15 samples from all kinds of genres, movies, etc… Multi-coloured, multi-fragmented, multi-climactic and multi-playful psy-trance… Rich, diverse and instantly rewarding… Sweet! #07: Electrypnose – Disfunction [148 BPM] The next track picks up right where the previous one left off… The irregular IDM-beats create the unique, oddball Electrypnose ambience which is totally trippy… And this is as much a tour de force into percussion trickery as it is a venture in trippy, acid-ridden shroom-trance… Highly intense, but in the right setting this is a classic in the making… Nicey nice! #08: Cerebral Factory – Cerebral Factory [150 BPM] As with the Elendil project, Cerebral Factory is a local project… It’s started during a workshop session where Vince hooked up with a couple of Swiss guys called Karash & Noon… It’s obvious that other people worked on this track, as it has a bunch of new musical influences… But basically it’s deep, dark, fast-paced Electrypnose trance… Riddled in acid-lines and constantly evolving within a framework of playful night-trance… Reminds me of Penta somehow… A great track, though maybe a tad too fast during a couple of passages… #09: Electrypnose - Le Tireur De Ficelles [150 BPM] Enter the puppet master – or Le Marionettiste as portrayed on the cover… And holy shit, what a track!! The tribal intro is as scary as it is hypnotizing – like an ancient, tribal version of The Delta… Add some razor-sharp electro trickery + a mean ass bassline, and you’ll get the idea… Damn, this is eeeeevil… Weird, sick and twisted… I love it! Stellar track! #10: Electrypnose - Brain Surgery [151 BPM] “Demons stay in Hell, huh? …Tell them that!” And if you thought that was fast, just wait until you listen to this sinister piece of devilish terror-trance… Usually I get easily bored with stuff above 150 bpm, but somehow Vince manages to make it eclectic and continuously interesting… And that’s exactly the case with this ghostly choon… Sure, it’s fast but it’s also in constant evolution, ensuring a safe passage to the netherworld… I have to be in the right mood though, to fully appreciate this… But when I am, it rocks! #11: Electrypnose - Bas Les Masques [193 BPM] The French worded title literally translates into ‘remove your masks’ which is the traditional saying during the end of the Venice Carnival… But apparently it also has an ambiguous meaning in French police talk, meaning something along the lines of ‘stop playing roles’. Anyway, maybe you’re wondering if I typed the wrong BPM count here. But I can assure you, I didn’t… This is in essence an atmospheric chill-out track, but due to the usage of complicated and irregular drill&bass/AFX’esque beat programming it has an incredible high count… Reminiscent of the Murmures Des Ombres track – and this is basically the most interesting chill-out track I’ve heard in ages… What an amazing way to end this remarkable album! I hate to repeat myself, but Vince never lets me down! And this album is no exception – it’s real fucking sweet and it’s going to be a strong contender for the ‘darkpsy’ album of they year 2006. But simply calling it dark psy is not cutting it! This crosses well over into all kinds of genres, from über-dark techno, over eclectic IDM, to melodic and edgy full-power dance music! And that’s exactly what I love about it - the unique, unconformity, underground sound of Electrypnose! If there ever was rich, unique psytrance, this is it! Hooray for musical diversity! As usual, Peak Records presents some really classy artwork – and this album looks so great on my shelf… All in all, I’ll give this album my highest recommendations… There’s an influx of awesome tracks, and even the tracks which doesn’t stand out are pretty damn solid… A safe buy for Electrypnose/Peak Records fans as well as fans of genre-bending psytrance…Enjoy!
