Well, for old stuff I do what I can to track down interesting promos on CDs... But the thing with CDs is that nowadays, they are usually just CD-Rs... Not many labels take the effort to actually make properly pressed promo-CDs anymore... And CD-Rs really have little value to me... When I receive CD-R promos, I usually just give them to one of my friends when I later get the retail version... I imagine it's all together very different within the vinyl segment - with white labels promos and stuff... I wouldn't know, as I'm CD only... /DP

Review: A Royale with cheese! Yage Records is out with their second compilation, following Electric Embryo released in the summer of 2005… I was really impressed by the debut release, which had an impressive roster of artists and corresponding sweet tunes… This one is compiled by Israeli producer Eldad Ben Ezry aka. Mechanix and he has yet to let me down with his hardcore funky psytrance… So, I’ve got my hopes up for this one… Let’s pump it up… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Mechanix – Pump Fiction [146 BPM] “I woke up one morning and thought; I’m no longer a destroyer. I’m a means of resurrection!” Eldad opens the ball himself with the title track… After a brief intro we’re introduced to a stomping, heavily filtered march-rhythm that’s accompanied by some old-fashioned synth exploring and knob tweaking… I really like how this track morphs back and forth in such a playful manner… It sounds simple, but it’s not… A brilliant opener! #02: Xerox & Illumination – High Fever [144 BPM] Wow, here’s the biggest surprise off the CD… Who would have expected that two of the leading forces in the evolution of Israeli full-on (Moshe Keinan & Amir Dvir) would be on the next Yage compilation? Well, their latest album did have some small excursions into the darker realms of psytrance, and I guess Eldad pulled some strings… Anyway, what we get here is basically full-on disguised as night trance… The rolling basslines and the synth melodies are VERY full-on in structure and the structure follows a pretty predictable pattern… Luckily it’s not all generic and predictable full-on, as we get some interesting tweaks and some very dancefloor friendly peaks… Pretty good, but it’s still basically full-on… And that’s a shame, coz I’m sure these guys could impress even more… A decent track! #03: Neuromotor – Children Of Peace [145 BPM] French producer Frederic Talaa has released 3 full albums + a ton of compilation tracks, and I remember a couple of his tracks from back in the days as being pretty good… Apparently this is some kind of remake of a track already released on his 2005 album Bloody Reality – but I haven’t heard that one, so I can’t tell what was changed… What I can tell you though, is that this resembles the previous track with its full-on patterns… It’s very lively and energetic, but there’s nothing here that I haven’t heard a gazillion times before… Yawn! #04: Hyper Frequencies – Rhythms Of Peace [145 BPM] “I have a dream…” Gilles Béraud is another Frenchman with an impressive roster of albums and compilation tracks… His track on the recent Peak Records compilation Utopeak was solid, yet somewhat predictable… This track starts with some dude’s high-pitched native chanting – which soon is accompanied by a pounding bassline and some tribal drums… And that’s not a bad combo at all… Actually it’s pretty simple, but unlike the previous tracks, this doesn’t suffer too badly from full-on tendencies… This is fragmented, playful psytrance – with all kinds of crazy FX… Real nice! #05: Damage – Sweet Suffering [148 BPM] “I'm sure God has his tricks, but getting out of places no one else can, that's one of mine! …The suffering, the sweet suffering!” South African producer Gideon Baard also had a track on Electric Embryo, and he’s had some really nice tracks on Digital Psionics too… This track starts really wicked with an awesome ambience not unlike Artifakt… Soon after we’re in full FX and all gates are open… Fast-paced, multilayered, edgy party music… Brilliant! The track itself goes down the same nerve-wrecking, eardrum-caressing, brain-massaging road as some of the better South African maximum trance… Oh yes, this is ripe! Hands down, the best track here! #06: Mechanix – No Doubt [146 BPM] “This is… the beginning!”… Wow – are we sampling ancient Brooklyn Bounce tracks now? Haha… Anyway, another track by Eldad, and this one also has his trademark sound of acid-ridden, multi-fragmented, no-questions-asked full-power night trance… Very rich in structure and instantly head-bob friendly… Never a dull moment! Awesome! #07: Toxic – Serious Damage [146 BPM] “Fell the power of the gods!” Toxic are Alon Atias & Avi Aboresi from Israel who’ve had a ton of compilation tracks on various labels… I really liked their track on the 2004 Parvati compilation Psychedelically Yours 2 and their track on Electric Embryo was sweet too… I like how this track starts really slow and held-back… That guitar sample is strangely familiar, but sounds really great… As the track progresses more and more layers are added… The feather light guitar-bit strike a remarkable contrast to the pounding bass and the twirling acid-lines… And oh my, what a build-up/peak part! Sweet tune! #08: Rabdom L – Thermal Dispute [144 BPM] Rabdom L is one third of the South African trance collection Twisted System who released their excellent second album Core only one month ago… This track obviously has Twisted System elements, but it’s not as action-packed as a TS tune… It’s somewhat more stripped down to the core (pun intended!)… The acid level is high though – don’t worry! It’s all pretty nice, but it seems to lack the intensity of the previous tracks… It doesn’t really stand out here, I’m afraid… #09: U Men – Retro Punk [143 BPM] “I'm here to tell the story. The story that has to be told. I’m here to uncover the glory. The glory of the old gold. For what is old got new again and what is new will soon be old. And remember: Everything you hear is real, it began in the future! […] ” I have absolutely no idea who U Men are – and the booklet doesn’t give any info to reveal that mystery… Anyway, I have really mixed of feelings on this weirdo track… It pretty much revolves around lengthy voice samples in uttered in broken English – and all kinds of oddball musical endeavours into electro, psytrance and IDM… It’s not bad, but somehow I have a difficult time to fully appreciate it… It’s just too… Retro! So, how does this hold up with Electric Embryo? Well, that’s hard to say coz it’s really two very different compilations… Whereas Embryo pretty much focussed on hard-hitting, nocturnal psytrance, this one has a wider spectre of psytrance… I was a bit worried when the full-on tracks took over, but luckily the South Africans came along and saved the day… What I’m trying to say here, is that this is indeed a nice compilation with a handful of stand-out tracks… As you can probably tell, I’m not the biggest fan of full-on, but luckily we get a bunch of other musical styles here too… Great! Diversity rules! The cover art is very cool – reminds me of the NOS style… The Engrish cover notes have fast become a Yage Records trademark, and I guess they have their charm… Fans of the darker sides of psytrance will most likely like all but a couple of tracks here – and there’s something for full-on buffs too… All in all, another solid Yage release… Enjoy! Bubble - Israeli act... Had an album out last year on Mushy Records... I have it, but it's collection dust right now... It got pretty good reviews, and not just from the Guy Cohen types... Loud + Nitro + Hatman - Israeli acts... For the most part generic crap! True Lies - no idea!? V-Tunes: Sandro Kulka & Hans Muester from Switzerland.. Progressive duo who've released a nice handful of nicey-nice tunes... Side A: Olivier Cambier from France... Another progressive act who've released a handful of tracks on various compilations... I like most of his stuff! /DP

Ben, my man - this sounds WONDERFULL... I for one, have no problems with the transitions - they interweave nicely, and I really enjoy the floating, melancholy atmosphere here... It reminds me of a cross between Sigur Ros (without vox) and some movie score that I can't quite place right now... Of course, more FX wouldn't hurt, but generally I like the track as it is... I guess it could be an icy-cold/artic intro to a faster track or something... Whatever it is, I sure enjoyed it... /DP

FREAK SHOW!! * Round 1 has the excellent Ghost Train track which makes it worth while... I need to get myself a copy soon * The Luomuhappo is one of the best Finnish albums I own... It's AWESOME! * Orion is an old-school classic * Funky Fumes was one of my first Swedish forest madness CDs... Watch out for the HORRIBLE singing by the guys themselves... It's soooo bad! The rest of the CD is much better though * Of the two Squaremeat CDs, I only have Wave Soup which took me a LONG time to get into... It's still not something I can easily digest, but it's nice for the most part... * Ultrapop I just got yesterday from Tox... In fact I'm listening to it in my headphones right now... Groovy as hell! * Beats & Beyond - this was perhaps my first taste of Finnish madness... Never really got into it, but perhaps it's time to dust it off soon... * Z-Man... This Danish duo consists of Joakim Hjørne and Mads Tinggaard who prior to this album has released a handful of tracks – primarily on Iboga and Tribal Vision Records… So far I’ve liked every single track I’ve heard from these progressive marvels – so I’ve been looking forward to this album for at long time… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Run Baby Run (The Big Escape Version) [132 BPM] “It's an entirely new game system!” What better way to open a debut album, than with a big, lengthy, epic smash? And when I say epic, I mean epic! This is slow-building, extended-into-oblivion progressive trance… Complete with sci-fi samples, tribal drums, digital chanting, floating/epic melodies and enough subtle groove to satisfy most people… The track doesn’t really take off before the 3’23 mark – but when it does, it’s with such preserved energy, that you cannot help but crack a big old smile… Usually I would have deemed this style too cheesy, but somehow this rubs me the right way… A very nice opening track! #02: Everland Airport [131 BPM] “Electric, electric power…!” This track pretty much skips any kind of intro and launches straight into banging, electro-ridden funkiness… The female vox doesn’t seem that well thought-out, and I could do without them… I do however like the phat electro passages and the simple-yet-effective rhythm section… Not bad at all – but not too amazing either… #03: Flangers In The Night [132 BPM] As the title subtly hints, we’re digging deeper now – towards darker night time teKk-trance… Don’t get me wrong, this is not minimal techno or anything; it’s just quite a tad darker than the previous tracks… I’m totally into edgy stuff, and especially the second part of this tune is magnificent! #04: Have Fun And Survive [133 BPM] After the previous venture into the dark side, I was kinda hoping we’d stay there… But no, this is much more ‘over ground’ – with a cheesy voice sample and a generally uplifting atmosphere… Now I hate to come across as negative sounding here – that was not my intention, as this is indeed an interesting track… The steady electro groove is hypnotizing and the bass is deeper than ever… Also the old-school disco synths are pretty neat! But that’s it… Nothing to get too excited about… I guess it will work as a DJ tool, but for home listening I don’t think this one is gonna get that much playtime on my system… #05: Wannafrisbee [132 BPM] Half-way thru the album, and it’s time for some sexy beach house trance… As with the opening track, this one takes it’s time slowly building tension before letting steam off… The absurd thing is that the climax never really comes… There’s nothing wrong with that, and this is another brilliantly produced groove-beast… I just wish it went somewhere… So, this is great for background music or as a DJ transition tool and not-so-great for the nitty-gritty party… And hey, I know that probably never was the intention… #06: They Are Not Alone [132 BPM] Next up, is perhaps the most reverb-soaked and funky number off the album… The intro is subtle and mouth-watering and when the track finally gets into gear, it’s mostly rewarding… I’m not a fan of the ragamuffin vocals, but I choose to overhear them here… For the most part this is a nice, steady groover of a track, and especially the last three minutes are brilliant… But I still can’t shake my momentarily boredom when listening to this track… Something is missing…;o/ #07: Mood Food [133 BPM] “Ladies and Gentlemen, you may think you've seen the unusual. You may think you've seen the bizarre. But I've travelled to the five corners of the world, and let me tell you, I've never seen anything like this”. Luckily Mood Food comes along and saves the day… Whereas the previous tracks were more or less elevator music, here’s a track that stands-out and deserves to be played loudly on the dancefloor… This is subtle progressive trance ranging on both electro-passages and uplifting morning trance… Groovy as hell and definitely a feel-good track… A brilliant tune! #08: Wadley [128 BPM] This track was already released on the 2005 Iboga compilation Set/5 – Summer Collection so I’m just gonna copy/paste my review from back then: […] This is an afternoon burner…The rhythm section is funky and progressive, the melodic leads are solid – and the guys are not afraid of experimentation, as we get all kinds of world beats influences throughout the track… Well done! Again this track suffers from stand-still syndrome towards the end, but it’s not too bad… I can cope! Still a brilliant track! #09: Glitter (feat. Trine) [133 BPM] On the closing track, the guys are joined by some Danish vocalist-chick called Trine Jensen…. The lyrics she sings are not going to go down in musical history, but she sure has an angelic voice… It’s very feminine, yet nasal somehow… It’s great! Only problem is that it doesn’t really fit this track that well… It’s much better than the previous vocals on this album, but her singing style would fit euro-house much better… In that sense, I have mixed feelings about this track… Her voice is excellent – and so is the music…But together they form a hybrid that doesn’t really *do* it for me… And that’s a shame coz individually both the music and the singing rules! So, was this album as good as I’d hoped for after the brilliant compilation tracks? In short – no! A longer explanation would be me stressing, that this is an extremely well-produced album – with a couple of really excellent tunes… And couple of very nice tunes – and a handful of decent tunes… The artwork is lovely as always, and with only a minor fluke, the flow is pretty steady too… Let me also stress, that there are no bad tracks here – some of the tracks are just not what I expected or hoped for… They are too many stand-still passages here, and that’s a shame, coz when the guys crank up the old party meter, they do it so well… But hey, fans of the slicker side of Iboga Records will most definitely have a field day with this album – as will fans of Gaudium and similar crossover progressive trance… So, in conclusion, this is not my fav’e among recent Iboga releases – but even when it’s sub par Iboga stuff, it’s still pretty classy… Enjoy! You do however have the promo + the Substance version + the Blue Room 3xLP... And if I know you as well as I think I do, it's only a matter of time before you pick up the retail CD too (and you'll be caught dead before you purchase the Avatar re-release)... I'm pretty satisfied with my retail copy (which I paid FULL PRICE for when it came out! ) but I gotta say, that the promo appeals strongly to my collecting gene... /DP
