  1. So Nemo, I know I ask you this a couple of times every year, but do you ever think that you'll get your records out of storage and eventually get a Discogs account? You know, we all want to drool all over you... err... your record collection! /DP
  2. Me too... I get lost in Discogs... I can literally spend hours at a time browsing through collections, labels, artists, etc...
  3. V/A – Project Eleusis Artist: Various Title: Project Eleusis (The bible of psychedelics - 100 years of Albert Hofmann) Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Dropout Productions (US) Cat. #: DPCD105 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 9 January 2006 Track listing: 01. 08’57” Penta - Tollkorn 02. 08’02” Polyphonia - Illuminati 03. 07’57” The Nommos – Happy Hofmann 100 04. 07’15” Kindzadza – Ritm Corr 05. 08’20” Highko & Naked Tourist – Divine Blast 06. 06’39” Digitalist - Velotripper 07. 07’59” Candy Power – Time Racing 08. 07’34” The Galactic Brain – Mind Manifest 09. 08’13” oCeLot – Happy Birthday Review: Herzlichen Glückwunsch Hofmann! On April 19, 1943 the world changed drastically: Dr. Albert Hofmann discovered the psychoactive substance known as LSD which has since been one of the most popular semi synthetic psychedelic drugs on the planet… And we all know that with the advent of acid, man discovered new ways to think and it had to do with piecing together new thoughts of mind… Hofmann acknowledged this, and perhaps most well-known are his storied bike rides through the streets of Basel, Switzerland whilst under the influence… Celebrating the 100th birthday of Dr. Hofmann on 11 January 2006, the Gaia Media Foundation staged an International Symposium in Basel – and with this compilation Dropout Productions are providing the soundtrack… The track list looks impressive, and I for one can’t wait to start celebrating… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Penta – Tollkorn [146 BPM] Russian-born, American-based producer Nikita Tselovalnikov cracks open the celebration with a track sporting a Swedish sounding track-title he made whilst on the Portuguese Azores Islands… Confused? Don’t be – this is trademark Penta: Elusive, fragmented, and action-packed psytrance… And as always, Penta puts a funny spin on the so-called darkpsy… This is somewhat spooky but also very playful and full of oddball twists and turns… Tweaked by the man himself: Penta! A solid first track! #02: Polyphonia – Illuminati [152 BPM] “This illuminati. This group, who calls themselves The Enlightened, had gained resistance of power through control of the banking system!” Polyphonia is Romolo Cherie from Greece and I only know his work from the 2005 Trishula compilation Crazy Goblins & Wicked Pixies… Honestly, I didn’t like that track very much due to its bleak and monotonous nature… Anyway, this track is not as minimal, but it still suffers from a few problems… It’s by far the fastest track here, galloping away at an impressive 152 beats per minute – which obviously leaves little space for ‘breathing’... Also, I not the biggest fan of the hardcore, high-pitched squelching going on here… Well, I guess I’m just not a Polyphonia fan… Bummer! #03: The Nommos – Happy Hofmann 100 [150 BPM] If you thought you’d experience an Albert Hofmann celebration without a friendly nod from Goa Gil, you were wrong… I mean, these guys must be just around the same age… Heck, we all know that Hofmann ‘sponsored’ countless fun-filled parties on the beaches of Goa… So, this is Goa Gil and Ariane paying their respect… The track starts with a German voice sample of Hofmann himself talking in his calm voice – and soon thereafter the track is in full gear… Not as dark as the previous track, but still pretty damn banging… Thankfully this works much better construction-wise, and it’s been a while since I’ve heard such a great track from Gil Baba… Hard-hitting, acid-ridden, squelching night-trance – with enough variation, thrills and frills to keep me smiling… Very well put together! Best track so far! #04: Kindzadza – Ritm Corr [148 BPM] From Russia with love! Leo Greshilov also sends his greetings with ‘rhythm core’… Another big-shot night trance producer with many releases under his belt – and quite a few personal favourites of mine… The intro here is very cool – some kind of industrial wailing sound is slowly expanding into a relentless monster of a tune… Banging, acid-ridden, edgy, twisted, dark, gritty and experimental – and that was just what the good doctor ordered! A fine, fine track! #05: Highko & Naked Tourist – Divine Blast [148 BPM] Here’s a German collaboration between Heiko Quast (Noise Poison Records) and Martin (Z-Neo) & Björn (DJ Iguana)… Especially Naked Tourist have impressed me with their work, and I’m still looking very much forward to their debut album Mad Different Methods coming soon on Parvarti Records… What we get here, is genuine, blasting psytrance… The bassline is more refined than in the previous tracks, and as such this is perhaps the most dancefloor friendly track thus far… As always with Naked Tourist we get a solid dose of raging mad, druggy night-trance – pure dancefloor fodder… Sweet! #06: Digitalist – Velotripper [150 BPM] Digitalist is Swiss producer Thomas Franske and I only just recently became acquainted with his work on the Peak Records compilation Utopeak… I liked his über-fast, nocturnal odd-ball trance – and this track is just that! Starts out kinda boring, but that’s only for short while – soon the madness is unleashed… Flaring, raging, pounding night trance – with a ton of digital burps, electronic farts and enough acid-lines to keep me interested… #07: Candy Power – Time Racing [148 BPM] Candy Power is a Russian duo consisting of Roman Dominator & Kety Equilibrium… Made up names obviously, but who cares really!?… Anyway, I’m not familiar with these guys’ work, so I don’t really know what to expect… So maybe I’m in for a surprise… Yes – I was... For a while at least! This track is pretty sweet! The first part is eclectic, multilayered, contrasting night trance… It’s riddled with funky, trippy darkish elements – the acid-level has been cranked up – and basically it’s just great! Well, maybe I should curb my enthusiasm, as the track seems to somewhat loose focus for the last couple of minutes… And that’s a damn shame – it was going so well… Arrrgh! But still – the first part of this track rocks! #08: The Galactic Brain – Mind Manifest [147 BPM] The Galactic Brain is another new project to me… The guys behind it are Mexican producers Chac Pakal and Jolly Jack and as far as I can tell, this is their debut release… What we get here is more alleged darkpsy, but whereas the previous ones were much more versatile, this one seems to be somewhat more formulated… That’s true for the rhythm section at least which is pretty uninspired… Luckily there’s other stuff going on here, which almost makes up for it… The breaks + the voice samples are pretty nice and the eerie, alien ‘crawling sounds’ really creeps me out… And I like getting freaked out… A good track – too bad about the shabby first half though! #09: oCeLot – Happy Birthday [148 BPM] And hey, this is a Dropout Productions compilation after all, so who better to finish things off, than label regular Aaron Peacock!? This guy has yet to let me down with his experimental, redefining psychedelia… And hell yeah, once again Mr. Peacock plays the oddball card – just listen to the warped, filtered, vocoded, tranced-up rendition of the famous Happy Birthday tune which is repeated both in the intro and outro parts of this track… Before long, this turns into a regular acid-fest… Twirling, playful, syncopated acid-lines are all over the place, and this is perhaps the best trip tool of the entire compilation… I mean, the psychedelia is coming out the woodwork here… It’s acid galore… Brilliant! Honestly, I would have been disappointed if this turned out to be a collection of half-baked tunes profiting from the celebration of Hofmann’s birthday… But luckily it’s not – in fact, this is one hell of a compilation packed to the rim with kick-ass tunes… Oh yes, with only one ‘not great’ track and a couple of minor glitches, this is a real winner! The first essential purchase of 2006 for fans of eclectic, versatile, acid-ridden night trance… The cover art by CristalSource is… Well, erm, different! But I can cope with that – after all, its a tribute to the good doctor, so I can deal with the fact that it sports his portrait… To conclude, this is a brilliant compilation, which I will not hesitate to give my warmest recommendations… Enjoy! Now, let’s all stand and salute the man… Happy 100th doc! Favourites: 1, 3(!), 4(!), 5, 6, 8, 9(!) Review: The chilled Peaks of Switzerland… The Swiss label Peak Records, which is basically a collective of dedicated, music-loving, spiritual hippies, entered the chill-out market in March 2005 with their Chilling Goddess compilation. The musical diversity was vast on that compilation, and I enjoyed the majority of the tracks… In the mean time, Peak has released a couple more trance compilations – but now it’s time, once again, to lean our attention to chill-boss Master Margherita, and find out what he cooked up for us this time… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Tripswitch feat. Tanina & The Peaking Goddess Collective – Quanta “Weightless I float into the infinite mystery of life. Beyond the void a universe expands in glorious sparks of awareness. A radiant sphere of forgiveness and love. I bear the lightness of a feather blowing in a star breeze. Gravity is a state of mind.” Englishman Nick Brennan of Liquid Sound Design fame made the arrangements on this opening track – which was spiced up by the voice of Tanina Munchkina – all cooked to perfection by the PGC… Yeah a brilliant, spacy downbeat track to open the journey… Great as always! #02: Atriohm – Sevdah L. Golcev & A. Golcev from Macedonia had a track on the party compilation Hocus Peakus… That was an eerie, atmospheric track – and so is this downbeat tune… Sleek, laidback dubby vibes – with a certain mysterious, haunting quality to it… Spooky chill! Halfway thru the track takes on a more standard, ethnic chill-coat – and that’s really the best part… A pretty good track – especially the last part of it… #03: Kick Bong – Welcome E.T. Though I wasn’t really impressed with Frenchman Frank Jousselin’s latest track on the Mountain High 2 compilation, I really love some of his older tracks… As the title suggests, this is extraterrestrial stuff… Deep, slow beats spiced with lots of static and seasoned with alien mutterings… Throw in a few synth twirls and the occasional surprising twist and you’ve got the general feel of this track… Very different from what we’re used to hearing from Kick Bong… Not bad, but not overly exciting either – and also a little too short I’m afraid… #04: Flooting Grooves feat. Dymons – Desert Fractals Swiss music makers and PGC members Pearce Van Der Merwe & Daniel Symons have teamed up on this tune… Between them they’ve made some excellent downbeat tracks, and this is pretty damn fine too… Old-school ambient sounds – very similar to the early TIP sound – complete with Raja flute, whiskers and windy, floating ambience… Add a subtle, tribal rhythm and you’ve got a winner! A lovely, melancholy track! Brilliant! #05: Palyrria – Nilos Dub (Desert Mix) I don’t have much info on Palyrria – besides from the fact that it’s a Greek outfit… And sure enough, as the title hints, this is an Ethno-tribal chill-out track – with a lot of dub in it! The main lead consists of Arabic string arrangements… You can almost feel the dust of the desert in your eyes when listening to this… It feels very ‘real’ and all together the atmosphere in here is overwhelming… Another nice track! #06: The Peaking Goddess Collective – Purple Another collective effort – with input by Moreno Antognini, Ajja S.F. Leu, Pearce van der Merwe & Daniel Symons… These guys have never let me down with their genuine, heartfelt chill creations…And I’m happy to say, that this is another sure-fit hit with me! This is what eclectic chill-out is all about – it’s so rich, so diverse, so versatile – so lovely! The ‘silence bit’ is as daring as it is stunning! A collective effort that really pays off – with soft electric guitars, subtle percussion, floating flute, etc… Nothing short of brilliant! #07: Hol Baumann – Ocean Kingdom This is the first track from Frenchman Oliver Orand outside the Ultimae label – and what a catch by Peak! I’m a big admirer of his majestic, orchestral downtempo works – and this is just that! It builds from a subtle, tight ambient core into a fully blossoming, mature piece of underwater sound bliss… Pretty simple, but oh so effective… Top drawer material! #08: Kali-Frogz – 8/6 Tumor Park I only know French producers Eric Brandy & Christophe Fabulet from their lovely track on the Chilling Goddess compilation… This track is like a hybrid between atmospheric, floating ambient – and more antagonistic, twirling downbeat… Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing aggressive about this, just a few excursions into experimental space chill… I guess it’s pretty good, but somehow I never really connected to it – and the vocals don’t fit in at all! #09: Dymons – The Emerald Tablets Daniel Symons makes a solo appearance here with a very organic, rich track… Acoustic guitars, singing birds, morphing sounds, trippy vocals – and lots of dub! It sounds so simple, and in a way it is… But it’s still so very effective… Hot digital grooves mates with the warmth of analogue sounds – which makes for one hell of a cocktail! Sweet! #10: Lucid Picnic – Forest Picnic Serhan Berberoglu was also on Goddess – with a distinct and very dark ambient track… And sure enough, this is somewhat dark too… And ambient to the core! Floating, mellow soundscapes – packed with nature samples and held-back percussion… A picnic in the forest for sure! One of the most chilled tracks here – and in that regard it’s great for hardcore chillage and sleeping… Sadly I find it a little too uninteresting… #11: Master Margherita – Rainbow Ship Master Margherita aka. Moreno Antognini is the Peak Records top chiller… He’s one of the driving forces in the PGC and also compiled this CD… As on Peaking Goddess, he returns with some eerie, hugely atmospheric and darkish ambient… Reminds me of a warped, undecipherable version of Current 93… Very unique and very good! #12: Sync24 – Hibernation Sync24 is Daniel Ringström of Carbon Based Lifeforms fame… And he’s aiming for hibernation on this track – and succeeds! This is virtually beatless ambient – icy cold, sterile and totally dreamy… So, if the previous track sent your closer to dreamland – this one will escort you all the way… Soothing, relaxing, floating – pure ambience! Nicey nice! #13: Master Margherita – Weightless Moreno returns for a final message – transmitted straight from the otherworld… The vocals from the intro are cut up and recycled here – creating a similar, yet totally different mood – and completing the infinite loop! Mysterious, but also comforting… A fine way to end the journey for sure! Another fine, high quality Peak Records instalment comes to an end… The trip started where Chilling Goddess left off – and didn’t stop for a long time… Ever since I got this compilation I’ve been playing it again and again and again and again… It’s an infinite loop, continuously rewarding and ever satisfying… Just like Goddess was… This is not better – or worse! It’s just as good! Of course some tracks are better than others, but that’s really just stating the obvious… The cover art is brilliant as usual, on this the ‘orange album’. And yeah – the whole quality package once again underlines the fact, that Peak Records is indeed a major player on both the dance and chill markets… A collective force to be reckoned with! Recommended to fans of eclectic chill-out music… Enjoy! 7. Well, it's OOP and all - but my experience tells me it's not among the rarest Blue Room releases... It was also licensed to both Blue Room Americas and SPV Poland... And Blue Room Released did see some very effective distribution worldwide, so yeah - it's not that rare... I've also seen it on Ebay a number of times... Generally the Discogs owned/wanted ratio will give you a good idea of how rare a given release is... And in this case, it's something like 5/1... So Cinos' estimate is not far off I think... Maybe a little higher, depending on where you sell it... /DP

  13. Spectra – Beyond Belief Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Spectra (Portugal) Title: Beyond Belief Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Oxygen Records (Czech Republic) Cat. #: OXYCD003 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 5 December 2005 Track listing: 01. 02’39” Intro 02. 07’33” Audio 59 03. 07’32” Into The Monkey Planet 04. 08’38” Set The Drive 05. 09’54” Headshot 06. 09’26” Ganzales 07. 09’06” One Self (With Zero Sequence) 08. 09’57” Discoshit 09. 08’49” Beyond Belief .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/cc2j6 (all tracks!) Review: Good morning Portugal! As the 3rd release from Czech morning trance label Oxygen Records, we get the debut album from Portuguese psytrance duo Spectra… The tracks I’ve heard from Paulo & Francisco Oliveira have had varied impact on me… Some of the stuff released on Ketuh has been really nice, whereas I wasn’t too thrilled with the cheesy track on the Parsec compilation… But hey, I know these guys can pull off some proper stuff, so let’s dig deeper into their first full album… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Intro [145 BPM] The intro track is pretty sweet… Distorted, tweaked synth-twirls – kept within a crisp, morning trance framework… Promising for the rest of the album… I wouldn’t have minded a full track in this style… Anyway, a very nice intro… #02: Audio 59 [145 BPM] We already had an intro track, so this track only runs for 14 seconds before the bass and kick are unleashed… It’s full-power, banging morning trance… The distinction from the endless pool of boring full-on, are the nice, frequent breaks and the twirling melodies... Also the syncopation effect, works surprisingly well in this track… I mean, it’s all been done before, but it actually works pretty well in this track… I like it! #03: Into The Monkey Planet [145 BPM] Again the Spectra guys doesn’t use much time on boring, pretentious intros… No time is wasted, and before you know it, this track is in full FX… It’s still uplifting full-on, but this time with a slightly more night time feeling to it… Also, the attempts into acid-stabs are pretty successful, and I like the edgy sound here which again distances the track from the most obvious full-on pitfalls… Oh, and that final build-up is simply impressive and ultimately rewarding… Best track so far! #04: Set The Drive [145 BPM] On this track, we’re approaching more standard full-on – and the bassline seem a little blunter now... That’s a shame, but luckily the melodic twirls are much more in focus, and the sound spectre seems more refined… Kind of old-school in a sense, but obviously with very fresh production techniques… Reminds me of Mr. Peculiar or Silicon Sound… A pretty nice track, but somehow it lacks a little bite… #05: Headshot [135 BPM] Besides from the intro track, this is the only track that ventures away from the 145 bpm range… So, half way thru, we take it down a notch – and that’s a welcomed change! This track cruises at a comfortable speed, offering a break from the dancefloor tunes… This could easily work on the dancefloor too, but more as an opening or transition track – or as a cross-over track between progressive and trance… A nice track, but it’s maybe a little too anonymous – and also a little too long… #06: Ganzales [145 BPM] And now we’re straight back to energetic full-on with the speedy Ganzales track [pun intended!]…The syncopated stabs from earlier are back, and this is pretty straight-forward full-on… What I like about this track though, is that it’s focussed… It keeps building straight towards that inevitable climax towards the end… It doesn’t waste time on boring excursions… It’s just plain, driving full-on – and in that sense it’s ultimately rewarding… An honest track, so to speak – and for that reason I like it! #07: One Self [145 BPM] On this track the guys are joined by fellow countrymen Pedro & Nando… I’m not familiar with any of their previous work, but who cares!? Again, this is pretty standard full-on – and there’s not much innovation in this track I’m afraid… Sure, it’s uplifting, and its dancefloor friendly… But the bassline is way too uninspired, the melodies are predictable and generally I feel the guys are starting to copy themselves… Would fit right in on one of the endless Israeli neo full-on compilations… *Yawn* #08: Discoshit [145 BPM] Well, we’re still in uplifting, morning full-on territory here – but at least this track has a little edge and more variation that the previous one… And again, this has certain elements of 2000-2003 full-on in it… The little breaks offer a welcome break for the dancers, and I’m sure the club-folk will also take well to the floating, uplifting melodies and the climactic nature of the track… I’m not the biggest fan, but I do like the energetic rhythm section… Not a bad track per se, but it’s too long and there are several parts where I loose interest… #09: Beyond Belief [145 BPM] The sun has set, and it’s time for the last track… The title track is maybe the most uplifting here, and different parts of it, reminds me of both Silicon Sound, Mr. Peculiar and especially Protoculture… Well-polished, multilayered, energetic morning trance that’s both epic and dancefloor friendly with a few surprises thrown in… The climaxes are just right, and overall this is among the best tracks here… Nicey nice! Truth be told, I usually stay clear of blatant full-on albums… But there was a certain appeal to this album that was too good to miss – there is indeed a handful of nice, energetic tracks… And as much as I’m sure, they’ll work wonders on the dance floors, they also did pretty damn well in my living room… Sadly, there are also too many tracks with too many boring parts… Not boring as in event-less, but boring in the sense that they lack individuality… That being said, I must also stress that Spectra certainly has unique moments... Indeed! I just wish the entire album was like that! The good tracks are indeed good – and they distance themselves from the vast pool, of copy/paste full-on from Israel… The cover art is lovely – as always with Oxygen Records. Nice work! To conclude, this is an album for fans of uplifting, melodic morning trance – with a little bite… Not among the best melodic albums of 2005, but certainly not among the worst either… Enjoy! 15. You mean besides from the two links that Draeke provied? But yeah, I agree it looks a little shady, but I think Ukiro was right when he said, it was an obscure, licensed release... But I agree that it is odd, that no-one seems to actually own a copy... Which was also the reason it was rejected at first... /DP
  16. Well, I didn't make the rules on Discogs, but I for one, like the way it's done... In the old days Discogs was a Babylonian chaos with tons of errors which pretty rendered it useless... I like the fact, that everything is double checked to ensure the highest possible accuracy... Also, the very nature of Discogs is cross-referencing, which would be pretty useless if all data wasn't correct... Yes, it might take a while for new users to get their stuff accepted, but as I stated earlier, that's just until you get the hang of it... After that, it flows smoothly... /DP
  17. That's not true... You can comment all you want without a rank - but you get rank points by each comment... The thing you CAN'T do without a rank, is vote on releases... That measure was made, because there was a lot of fake users signing up to either bash or praise releases... X-Noize style! /DP
  18. Hehe.. Well, yeah... No but seriously - the first couple of submissions are always the hardest... But after you get the hang of it, you'll get your pendings moted fast... I've had releases accepted in 20 minutes... Now that's fast!
  19. It sucks to wait forever to get your pendings accepted... I've been there, done that... Anyway, maybe it's because both you guys have a Discogs score of zero? Also, none of you added moderation notes - that ALWAYS helps... Adding cover art is also a good idea + a few notes (I know you did that Delars... Oh, and you'll have to credit the mastering on that release according to the new guidelines)... Maybe you guys should 'unpend' and go earn some points and get a higher rank - that way mods will notice you more easily... It's easy getting points by adding comments, adding pictures, making corrections, etc... You can get a 100 rank in a few days, if you apply yourself... There are LOADS of updates waiting to happen within psytrance/goa/etc... So, get busy - and get yourself known around Discogs... That way your future pendings will quickly be accepted... ;o) /DP
