V/A - Infinity Artist: Various Title: Infinity Format: CD Label: Liquid & Solid Records (Serbia) Cat. #: LSD 002 Distribution: Samsara Date: 12 December 2005 Track listing: 01. 03’48” Magnetik – Overture To Infinity 02. 08’24” Pion - Beta 03. 09’04” Dickster vs. Annarchy – On The Hunt 04. 08’45” Wizzy Noise – Mind Scanner 05. 07’29” Manibus – Liquid Eyes 06. 07’18” Orion – Late Night Exposure 07. 08’43” Altöm vs. Wizzy Noise – Fifty-Fifty 08. 07’48” Polaris – Circles Rmx 09. 08’00” Vector – Daily Flame 10. 08’29” Manifest – A Day After Review: Liquid and somewhat solid! Liquid & Solid Records is something as rare, as a psytrance label from Serbia… Managed by DJ Stomas, this label made a surprisingly strong entrance into the scene with the first release – the compilation Alfa released in late 2003… Two years later, the second compilation Infinity is ready – again featuring an impressive range of well-established names + a bunch of new-comers… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Magnetik – Overture To Infinity Serbian downtempo producer Filip Nikolaevic (aka. Biolab) starts the compilation with nothing less than a gorgeous piece of majestic, classical, tranced-up music… It’s a mix of ancient Elvish choral work with huge melodic pads… A stunning intro! #02: Pion – Beta I have no info on Pion – other than it’s a producer from Serbia called Dovla… The track itself is undoubtedly progressive morning trance… Bubbling with joy and constantly building… The groove is evident, and this would work perfectly in a progressive morning set… Nice track! #03: Dickster vs. Annarchy – On The Hunt Legendary producer and green nun Richard Trevor is once again in cahoots with Anna Hefetz… I really liked their remix on the UK Trance compilation released by Transient in 2004, so I hope this track will be up to par with that… And yeah, this is definitely up to par with that remix – even better! I really like the smooth, digitally liquefied groove in this spacey tune… Uplifting morning trance – with enough psytrance elements to keep the underground satisfied… Those druggy samples might seem cheesy on paper, but in reality they work nicely… A quite simple track really, but yet so effective… Best tune so far! ;o) #04: Wizzy Noise – Mind Scanner Micky & Uriel from Greece shouldn’t need any further introduction… I’ve been a fan since their first album, and I’m happy that they keep up their high quality level in everything they do… After a lengthy, atmospheric intro the track itself starts… Remind me a little of Tegma with its blend of melodic psytrance with a pinch of tech-trance… Add those notorious Wizzy tweaks and turns, and you’ve got a very danceable hybrid track… Pretty nice but nothing groundbreaking here… #05: Manibus – Liquid Eyes “I want her under 24 hour observation. I want a complete set of blood work. Chemical and electrolyte analysis by the end of the day! Sir, advanced reflex testing is also a priority. Electrical impulses monitored…Sir! My name is Alice and I remember everything!” Nikola Vujnovic from Serbia released his debut album on AMZ Records in 2003 + released his second album under his Prosper alias on ZMA in 2004… This is a slightly darker track than its predecessors, and I really like it’s bleak, metallic edge… TekKy yes, but still with enough melodic substance to keep me interested… Nice track! #06: Orion – Late Night Exposure Jean Borelli is another legendary producer from the goa heydays who’s still active… He’s been in the game longer than anyone cares to remember, and he sure hasn’t lost his touch. This is basically full-on – but not nearly as boring and predictable as you might have feared… But still, we’re nowhere near the complexity of Borelli’s older work… For a full-on tune though, this isn’t half-bad… An ‘ok’ track… #07: Altöm vs. Wizzy Noise – Fifty-Fifty Alexis Cornet & Thomas Dubreuil teams up with the Wizzy boys – on this aptly named tune… Much faster than the previous track this starts with a massive full-on Altöm influence, whereas the Wizzy presence is felt mostly towards the second half of the track…A track that perfectly blends two very different styles – in the same track… How cool is that concept? Nice idea and a pretty nice track – especially the Wizzy Noise half! #08: Polaris – Circles Rmx Arnauld Stengel gives us a remix to the track which was first released on the Holographic Memory 2 compilation from 2003… I’m not really a Polaris fan, so I haven’t heard the original… Anyway, this is pretty standard full-on trance… Uplifting and fluffy trance best enjoyed in the mornings… I’m afraid this is a little formulated and yeah, boring, for my taste… Nothing new under the sun here… #09: Vector – Daily Flame Vector is the solo-project of some Serbian dude called DJ Buca… And he gives us another full-on morning tune, though this one is slightly more ‘banging’ than the Polaris track… Still, there is nothing here we haven’t heard so numerous times before… I do like the liquid bubbling FX here though – and the rhythm sections has it’s moments, but that’s still not enough to lift the track above a mediocre position I’m afraid… Decent track! #10: Manifest – A Day After “Something for your mind, body and soul!” Manifest is Dovla (Pion) and Toca (Alternative Control) working together… And finally we get a little edge! Yeah, this must be the oddball track of the compilation, which dares to steer a little off the beaten path, which is always very welcomed with me! The intro is long, murky and experimental… The bassline starts out pretty standard, but is soon tweaked into something more interesting… We’re still within morning trance, but there’s loads of experimentation going on… Nice way to end the compilation – this is the best track here! Liquid? … Yes! Solid? Well, the first half of this compilation is pretty solid… I’ll give you that much! I’m not a full-on buff… At all! So, I’m not too happy with the fluffy, cheesy tracks here… Luckily there’s not too many of them and I guess they are outweighed by the edgier, more interesting tracks here… That being said, I could still have wished for some more edge here – more tracks like the last experimental one, which is really good! The bottom line is, that we get a handful of pretty nice tracks here… Nothing too ground-breaking or revolutionary, but still – some pretty decent tunes which I’m sure will gain a large audience within the vast pool or morning trance fans… Purists, night crawlers and space cadets should probably listen before purchase though… Enjoy! Now playing: Infected Mushroom - B.P. Empire (Deep Mix) Well, of the single I still like the original and especially Roll Us A Giant better than this track... But yeah, I was too hard on it back in 2001 when I reviewed it... It's a pretty decent tune...

Behind Blue Eyes – Behind Blue Eyes Artist: Behind Blue Eyes (Denmark) Title: Behind Blue Eyes Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Iboga Records (Denmark) Cat. #: IBOGACD35 Distribution: twohandsdistribution.com Date: 23 November 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’04” Excerpts From Dreams 02. 08’09” Remember This 03. 08’17” Shadow Environment 04. 08’53” Sunshine 05. 09’07” Brumbasse 06. 07’11” As Brown Sugar Dissolves 07. 08’32” The Epitome 08. 09’11” Rumble In The Jungle 09. 07’42” Brumbasse (Emok Remix) Review: Sunglasses at night… This debut album from BBE marks the 35th CD release from Danish label Iboga Records – and this time, the artist is Iboga label boss Banel (Michael Abel-Larsen) in cahoots with Rene Nielsen of Beat Bizarre fame… They’ve teamed up under the Behind Blue Eyes moniker, under which they’ve already released one track on last year’s Playground compilation… I haven’t heard that one, so I have no idea what to expect… Let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Excerpts From Dreams [135 BPM] The opening track is blunt, though playful… Minimal, yet groovy… Simple, yet multi-layered… WTF? Yeah, this is a puzzling track in all its complexity… I really like the laid-back progressive groove here… This is car music – for cruising around in an urban environment at night – wearing sunglasses! A nice track that took me A LOT of listens to become comfortable with – but now I totally dig it! #02: Remember This [133 BPM] “You’re my hiding place, my faithful escape…” As the title suggests, we’re digging deep in the retro-bag… And we’re getting a real dominant female vocal here… I’m usually not the biggest fan of singing in trance, but this vocal is pretty damn nice – and fits the track perfectly… The music is also something out of the ordinary – with a sharp contrast between the deep-as-fuck reverb and the light-as-a-feather naïve melodies introduced halfway through the track… Three very dominant elements in this track, but they complete each other very nicely… A very ripe, mature track – which I’m sure, will appeal to the cross-over crowd too… #03: Shadow Environment [133 BPM] This track is like a mix of the two previous tracks… The contrasts mixed with the multi-layered complexity… Actually it starts out pretty boring – and continues to be kinda dull throughout most of the track… It gets better towards the ending, but still there is nothing here we haven’t heard on a gazillion Ibiza-compilation before… I dunno, maybe it’s because of its Balearic decent I don’t really get anything from it? A decent track… #04: Sunshine [133 BPM] As the title suggests, we’re still in fluff-territory here… Only this track appeals to me in a much greater sense than the previous one… That’s right, I’m a sucker for a well-constructed rhythm-section, and that’s exactly what we get here… It all starts out tribal Etnoscope-style, but soon more layers are added – including some floating, uplifting melodious background pads… Oh yeah, this might be commercial too, but I actually like it… Sexy beach-house trance… Nothing ground-breaking, but nice nevertheless… #05: Brumbasse [133 BPM] We’re still rubbing shoulders with the most commercial tracks on this compilation, but this track is a definite step in the right direction… Devout of the most obvious cheese-pitfalls, this track is real sweet… Big syncopated reverbs + nifty little melodic pads + subtle percussion + the sweetest summer groove this side of the Atlantic… Oh yes, this is what I’m talking about… Progressive trance when it’s best! Brilliant track! #06: As Brown Sugar Dissolves [133 BPM] Right – I take, it this is not a reference to heroin or subsequently The Rolling Stones… Whatever it is, this is a pretty harmless, laid-back track… Cruising at a comfortable 133 beats per minute, and generally sounding pretty nice… Nothing that gets me too excited though! #07: The Epitome [128 BPM] But wow – now we’re getting somewhere… This is definitely the most hard-hitting track of the album – despite the lowest BPM… Oh, the irony! Anyway, this is one bleak panzerfaust of a track… Minimal in structure at first, but slowly develops into something that bears closer resemblance to the previous tracks… I really don’t like the vocals here, but they don’t last too long so I’m gonna pretend I didn’t hear ‘em… Generally speaking, this is on hell of a track – experimental and edgy… And I’m all about edge! Sweet track! #08: Rumble In The Jungle [135 BPM] ‘The Rumble in The Jungle’ was a historic boxing event that took place on October 30, 1974, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It pitted then world Heavyweight champion George Foreman against former world champion and that time challenger Muhammad Ali. Ali won! Enough sidetracking now – let’s talk about this track… The intro is maybe a little too long for my taste, but when things finally happen they happen with a blast… Yeah, this is also pretty rough around the edges, but with enough uplifting elements to ensure a safe passage… I like the huge pads that surface once in a while maxing out the entire sound-spectre… Well done! A majestic tune! #09: Brumbasse (Emok Remix) [133 BPM] Emok (Mikael Dahlgaard) from Phony Orphants ends the album with a remix to Brumbasse…He re-arranges the track into a slightly more electro-ridden house-tune… The melodic lead here doesn’t do much for me… It’s not bad at all, but frankly I prefer the original… Right, so I actually have pretty mixed feeling about this album…There are no bad tracks here – not at all… It’s just that some passages are a little too dull for my tastes… But hey, I do not despair, as there’s a handful of track here which are really good… Three of them are even VERY good… And I’m happy to say, that the good tracks easily outweigh the less-good tracks… ;o) The best tracks are the edgy ones… The ones taking chances and playing around mixing up opposite elements… I like that, and in that sense this album is brilliant… If only it wasn’t for the few close-to-generic tracks here… Anyway, it’s still a pretty damn nice debut album. So, to clear up the confusion: Generally I like this album, but it’s not among the best I’ve heard this year… It’s still Iboga though, which guarantees a high level of quality! Progressive fans will definitely take well to this, and I’m sure certain tracks will cross successfully over into more commercial scenes too… Enjoy! EVP – Harmonic Module Hi-res: front Artist: EVP (UK) Title: Harmonic Module Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Wild Things Records (UK) Cat. #: WILD CD 002 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 28 November 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’54” Rain Call (Full Power Remix) 02. 06’36” Incoming Signals 03. 06’29” Halloweeny (Wild Dog Mix) 04. 07’06” The Birdy Song 05. 06’33” Salviador 06. 07’26” Psylocin 07. 06’35” Harmonic Module 08. 06’34” The Great Machine 09. 08’09” Tryptamines 10. 08’23” Rain Call Review: Electronic… Virtual… Psychedelia! Following the very nice debut-compilation Wild Rumpus UK-based underground label Wild Things Records is now releasing the long-awaited debut album by EVP… Alex Diplock was involved in five tracks on that compilation… Two tracks as one half of the Reality Grid duo, and three tracks by his solo project EVP… I was really taken by his highly psychedelic take on underground night-trance – and I’ve been looking forward to this album ever since it was announced… Now it’s finally here, so let’s find out if it was worth the wait… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Rain Call (Full Power Remix) [144 BPM] The opening track is an aptly named full power remix to the last, chilled track… It starts out very chilled – just like the original, but something is lurking under the surface… Tension building – and then BAM, shortly after the one minute mark, the bassline is unleashed… The first couple of minutes are not really interesting – it’s not until after the middle break all hell brakes loose… But when it does, it does it proper… The last half of the track is pure syncopated 303 goa bliss… Psychedelia is coming out the woodwork here! And so the standards have been set for the album… Yummy yummy in my tummy! #02: Incoming Signals [145 BPM] The second incoming signal doesn’t waste much time before getting down to the nitty gritty… Energetic, underground night-trance – absolutely soaked in acid-lines and trippy little FX… Reminds me of some of the tracks off the first Rinkadink album – though with the trip-meter cranked up… If you hopped into a pimped-up Delorean and took a trip back to 1997, you’d be rocking out to this tune on the car stereo… Ripe! #03: Halloweeny (Wild Dog Mix) [144 BPM] The bells tolls for thee! …‘tis the season to be… scared shitless! Yeah – this is EVP’s take on gloomy, spooky Halloween-trance… And how refreshing it is, to actually have some melodies and real psychedelia thrown into the vast pool of alleged ‘darkpsy’… Eat your heart out Xenomorph – you might be the dark lord of horror-trance, but this here isn’t exactly Sunday School Trance either… This is eerie, haunting night-trance – with more than a pinch of acid thrown in… I like that balance – and I like this track too! #04: The Birdy Song [147 BPM] Now this might sound like a pretty harmless track judging by the track-title – but ornithophobiacs be aware! This could be the tranced-up soundtrack to a Hitchcock movie… Rest assured, those birds *will* mess with your head! … Anyway, this is fast-paced underground night-trance – as always the 303’s are tweaked to the max, and we’re left with some seriously high-pitched tunage… We get melodies too in this climactic bouncer of a psytrance tune… Quacktastic! #05: Salviador [147 BPM] Survival of the trippest! And now for the diviner's mint … This track seems more focussed, more trance-induced and keener to assist you in trance dance-slash-trip… Very similar to the sound of the recent Derango album though with a more analogue sound… Yeah, this is fast-paced, hypnotic, psychedelic full-on night-trance… Relentless and absolutely smashing… Best track so far! #06: Psylocin [147 BPM] Psilocin and psilocybin are the main psychoactive compounds in magic mushrooms, so you can all guess where this track is going… That’s right; this is shroom-friendly psytrance… Über-weird at times, but instantly trip-friendly… Again, we’re somewhere in between Derango and psychedelic Parvati Records – add some ancient Hux Flux, stir well, and you’ve pretty much got the idea… Yeah, this is definitely one of the trippiest tracks on the album – perfect for a late night forest session… #07: Harmonic Module [147 BPM] The title track shifts the focus from mind expansion towards dancefloor antics… Yeah, this is full-power, inexorable trance-floor fodder… Packed to the rim with all kinds of psychedelic FX: Twists, turns, digital farts + analogue burps – and enough acid-lines to appeal to the old-school crowd… In which I belong! The last run-down seems maybe a little uninspired, but I’m not complaining… This is a nice track! #08: The Great Machine [146 BPM] “Oh great machine we beseech thee. What if life were more like a video game?” And the analogue mayhem continues… From the deepest recesses of the underground, comes this acid-soaked track… I’m not too sure how much I like that demented melody-lead in the beginning though… And that’s a shame really coz otherwise, this track is brand spanking sweet! Syncopated acid-lines comprise twirling melodies – and everything is fine and dandy… Though I feel like maybe the novelty is starting to wear off… #09: Tryptamines [146 BPM] But wait – there is more! It’s a monoamine compound - and it’s something for the feet AND mind… Oh yes, just when I was getting a little fed up, EVP manages to complete sweep me off my feet again with this flaring acid-bombshell… Powerful as a steam-engine and trippy enough to satisfy even the weekend Hindus… Equally melodic and dark – the perfect underground hybrid… Great track! #10: Rain Call [72 BPM] As legend prescribes, the last track is a chilled downtempo tune… We heard the full-on version of it in the first track, and now here’s the original in all its glory! This is deep, dark, ritual ambient… Not very pleasant at all – in the good sense! Tribal drums, haunting breezes and melancholy flutes… Illbient? Whatever it is, it’s pretty cool… And ties up the album nicely! Great debut album here with an influx of trippy, magical, acid-ridden tracks… There are no bad tracks here, and my only gripe would be that a few of the tracks sound a little too similar… But, when it’s as good as this, I really don’t have any major complaints… I was entertained throughout the album, and I really like the unique, old-school feeling this album possesses… A nice mix of trippy and danceable night-time tracks… There’s no fluffy full-on here – and it’s bereft of the most obvious darkpsy pitfalls… A mature, yet easily accessible album – of high quality! Alex Diplock is one of the last hippies standing – and with stuff this good I hope he’ll be standing for many years to come… He designed the cover-art to this himself, and I like it! It has that distinct old-school feel to it that I liked so much back then… The abstract text in the booklet is also a good read and the included DJ slip will come in handy to the Case Logic disciples… Well done EVP and Wild Things Records! A label on the rise that I’ll certainly monitor in the future… If you haven’t guessed it by now, lemme just recap and tell you that this is a sweet album… Among the best “melodic” artist albums of the year… Recommended to all acid-heads and old-school connoisseurs… Underground hyper-trance when it’s best!
