  6. Well, I have both the original + Test, so I guess I can answer that... Yeah, the tracks are just like on the original CD... I have no idea why they are 'almost' reversed... Oh, and the booklet from TFG is not included! Here's a short review I wrote years ago: Ahh... Another one of those timeless classics that I'm sure we all hold dear... This was released back in 1996 on now defunct German label Polytox. In keeping with the Polytox quality level, this is a MAGICAL album and it never ceases to amaze me... It took me a couple of years to track down a copy, but it was worth the wait, as this is packed with pure psychedelic jewels. My fav'e are the wonderful opener Welcome To The Future and the huuuuuge classic Ant Invasion... But the rest is wonderful too... Too bad Planet BEN tossed the 'dots' and turned minimal... What he's doing now is not even close to being half as good as this... But then again, perhaps it's just me being a grumpy old nostalgic trancer... 9/10 /DP
  7. V/A – Set/6 – Evolved Artist: Various Title: V/A – Set/6 Evolved (Compiled by DJ FREquence) Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Iboga Records (Denmark) Cat. #: IBOGACD33 Distribution: twohandsdistribution.com Date: November 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’50” FREq – Carbon Based Lifeforms (Sun Control Species Remix) 02. 08’42” FREq – Strange Attractor (Liquid Soul Remix) 03. 09’25” Beckers – Switch (Ace Venture Remix) 04. 08’27” Zen Mechanics – Environmental Porn 05. 08’27” Morax – Lost In The Woods 06. 09’10” Casa Flava – Further South (Deep Mix) 07. 06’38” Nyquist – Singularity (FREq Revision) 08. 07’13” Manuel Duego - Deception 09. 09’22” Nasser - Vovoli Review: Slicker than your average! The 33rd (!) CD release by Danish label Iboga Records is the 6th in the notorious Set-series… The 4th was Israeli proggy trance, whereas the 5th was smooth progressive summer choons… This one is compiled by FREq (Aran Gallagher) under his DJ FREquence moniker… It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the FREqqy sound, so I’ve been looking forward to this particular compilation for a long time… Let’s find out what Aran has cooked up for us this time… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: FREq – Carbon Based Lifeforms (Sun Control Species Remix) [135 BPM] CBL was the opening track on FREq’s Strange Attractors album released in 2004. Ah very distinct, epic classic which is now remixed by fellow Australian Andrew Davidson…This remix might not have the same instant-headbang-factor as the original has, but I like it nevertheless… It’s very housy and immensely dancefloor friendly… Tribal and totally driving too - and it pays homage to the original. Obviously not better than the original, but still a pretty solid tune… #02: FREq – Strange Attractor (Liquid Soul Remix) [135 BPM] Strange Attractor was, and still is, my fav’e track from the FREq album… So remixing it could be sacrilege… Don’t mess with royalty! Nicola Capobianco from Switzerland does a pretty decent job on this remix though – and I’m glad I don’t have to accuse him of blasphemy… It’s far from being as massive as the original – and especially the first couple of minutes are kinda boring… I know it’s all about building, and further on in the track the phatness is introduced… Those huge reverb sounds have been chopped up and filtered, but they still sound excellent! Remix approved! #03: Beckers – Switch (Ace Venture Remix) [132 BPM] Another ‘classic’ remixed here. This original track by Frank Beckers was pretty much a progressive anthem, and now it’s re-assembled by Yoni Oshrat who has had brilliant tracks on the previous two Set-compilations… To be honest I was never really taken by the original – and I blame it all on those damn vocals… I mean the music is frekkin’ excellent… If only that guy would just STFU! ‘I’m not your party toy’…Aaaargh! Puke! It really ruins it for me… Apparently there’s a Wrecked Machines remix out there which kicks the shit outta this one, but I haven’t heard it… Yet! #04: Zen Mechanics – Environmental Porn [135 BPM] Luckily the Flying Dutchman Wouter Thomassen is here to save the day… This guy has yet to let me down with his crossover stuff and tight production… And sure enough, this is cross-over stuff too – somewhere in between tribal progressive and uplifting morning trance… Smooth, funky and silky white… Uncomplicated perhaps but very easily accessible… I’m digging it loads! #05: Morax – Lost In The Woods [134 BPM] Morax is Michael Reznik from Israel – he mixed one of my fav’e progressive tracks this year: Prosect – Sonified off the Inner Circle compilation released by Tribal Vision earlier this year… This is a deeper track than the previous ones – with a darker, grittier edge… And yeah, I can see where the forest analogy comes from… There is definitely something wooden going on here… I really like the structure of this track – and the acid-bits towards the end kicks ass! A nice, hard-hitting track! #06: Casa Flava – Further South (Deep Mix) [130 BPM] This is my first encounter with Casa Flava (Olivier Berger and Stan Kolev) who are Plastic Fantastic regulars… We’re back to floating, crossover progressive trance now… Very driving with tons of reverb action going on… The tribal-drums are pretty cool and the overall lazy groove is nice! Deep indeed! I can see why FREq likes this – it’s very similar to his own style… The bridge after the break is particularly sweet… Kick-ass track! #07: Nyquist – Singularity (FREq Revision) [132 BPM] Nyquist is a darker FREq moniker… So Aran is remixing himself here. I’ve only heard one other Nyquist track and frankly that didn’t do much for me – but I guess adding the FREq-tag helps, as this is a really nice tune… Dark yes, but with an evident psy-touch to it… It’s sad though, that the melodies are hidden all the way in the background… They kinda drown in distortion… But a nice track nevertheless! #08: Manuel Duego – Deception [130 BPM] This is my first encounter with the music of Israeli producer Manuel Duego… We stay in the darker realms on this track… It’s groovy and all, but somehow also a little uninspired and bleak… Not bad at all, just not as notable as some of the previous tracks… #09: Nasser – Vovoli [132 BPM] This is the alleged bonus track by Nasser Halahle from Israel … Why it’s supposed to be a bonus is beyond me, but who the hell cares… This is floating, funky, tribal progressive trance with morning qualities… Very lush, but pretty harmful… It does what it’s supposed to though – move your feet! Another well-adjust journey in the Iboga Set-series… Maybe not as good as Set/5 but its damn close. As always with Iboga, everything reeks quality here – from the cover art to the informative release notes… Pure class! Aran has picked some real gems here, and besides maybe from the Switch Remix, there are no bad tracks on this compilation… Iboga Records are truly the undisputed heavy weight champs of progressive trance… A safe buy for anyone into slick-yet-edgy progressive trance – and I’m sure this will appeal to the crossover crowd too… Enjoy! 8. Psydb.net lists 615 existing and defunct labels...
  9. Well, I'm still using the point of reference to Filteria for the reasons mentioned above... I'm not saying these tracks would mix well am I? I'm pointing out, that these are both nu-school goa tracks released by Suntrip Records... And yeah, on that track I used the above mentioned point of reference: If you'd add some layers + a couple of climaxes - and then strip the Eastern influences you'd be pretty close to the sound of Filteria... Hope you catch my drift here? /DP
  10. Well - the link between Khetzal and Filteria should be pretty evident. They are both nu-school goa trance producers released recently on Suntrip Records... And at least a couple of tracks has obvious links... So this is nothing like comparing Son Kite with AP... Where'd you dig up that analogy? When I review stuff, I usually try to make certain points of reference - and if I can't compare releases from the same label, where would that leave me? Basically what I'm saying is, that I liked the Filteria album better... I should think that's an honest opinion. And if I was really asslicking, wouldn't I have praised this album like a madman? Who do you think sent me this album - Filteria? No, it was Suntrip Records and they wanted an honest, personal review - which I think I provided! /DP
  11. Khetzal - Corolle Artist: Khetzal (France) Title: Corolle Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Suntrip Records (France/Belgium) Cat. #: SUNCD03 Distribution: Arabesque Date: November 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’57” Listening Winds 02. 08’53” Anamatha (feat. DJ Zen) 03. 08’06” Bells Of Sarnath 04. 07’36” Narayana 05. 07’53” Ganesha Pramana 06. 08’57” Indian Attic 07. 09’06” Djaningar 08. 07’56” Nyiragongo 09. 08’04” Avasari Review: Soundtrack for weekend Hindus! The Suntrippers are out with their third old-school release… This time it’s the debut album of French producer Matthieu Chamoux who has released a few compilation tracks on Kagdila and Agitato Records… I’ve not heard those, but I really liked the uplifting, melodic goa-trance track he had on the Apsara compilation under the Avigmati name… That was stellar so my hopes for this debut album are pretty high… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Listening Winds [120 BPM] The title pretty much sums it up… This is chilled, windy melodic trance… We start out kinda slow – forest sounds, birds, cicadas, etc… Soon the melodies are unleashed… Joyous, uplifting synth-galore with a Raja flute to balance things out… Nice and chilled with the distinct old-school melodic feel to it… A nice little opening track, but nothing that gets my juices flowing… #02: Anamatha (feat. DJ Zen) [132 BPM] This track was originally released by DJ Zen on the 2003 Kagdila compilation Peace Therapy… This is a longer, re-worked version though… At first it’s very reminiscent of the previous track, but after a couple of minutes it gets faster… The ethno-tribal influences are rich here – complete with native vocals and chanting… After a couple of minutes the first acid-line makes an appearance and the track shifts into proper goa trance… Sweet! Fuck yes; this is pure, true-to-the-roots nu-school goa trance… Less multi-layered and climactic than Filteria – and more Eastern influenced… But damn, this is good… Uplifting as hell and very trance-inducing! Sweet! #03: Bells Of Sarnath [150 BPM] Woow – check out the huge, morphing intro here… This is Filteria style new-school goa, though maybe with fewer melodies in the foreground… I like the pace + the native influences, but I could have wished for even more complexity… Also the ending seems strangely out of place… But it’s still a pretty good, uplifting track… #04: Narayana [140 BPM] We’re taking it down a notch for this track, but basically it’s the same thing again… Pure, un-spiked goa trance as it sounded ten years ago… Obviously the production techniques have improved dramatically, but the underlying emotions are just the same… A sonic trip down memory lane… I even get shivers down my spine when the acid-lines kick in for the final run… @ 5’08 it’s just pure goa bliss! …Amazing! #05: Ganesha Pramana [160 BPM] And here’s a visit from Ganesh – the four-armed, son of Shiva & Parvati bearing the head of a one-tusked elephant… Oh yes, this is more highly Hindi-influenced Goan trance… This is by far the fastest track here, and the intensity level is nothing short of impressive… Would mix perfectly with Filteria or ancient Pleiadians… The acid is flowing freely and the Eastern influences are all over the place both melodically and spiritually… The peaks are truly climactic and dancefloor friendly… A sweet, sweet track! #06: Indian Attic [140 BPM] Again we’re taking it down a notch, and as the title suggests we’re once again treated to a venture into Eastern inspired melodic trance… The kick is really phat in this one… Perhaps even the hardest on the compilation – reminds me a little of ancient Shidapu…Also the layering seems to be more advanced here… Nice! #07: Djaningar [130 BPM] Take it a notch further down, and we’re as close to chilling as you can with kicking beats… This is wobbly, deeply groovy, melodious trance… Morphing sounds, filtered beats and a controlled rhythm section… Pretty nice, but even more action wouldn’t hurt… Also the space-samples seem oddly out of place… #08: Nyiragongo [138 BPM] And here comes the surprise… Up until now, pretty much everything on this album has been predictable to some extent… But this track takes a more techno/tribally inspired approach to melodic goa trance… How cool to be totally swept of your feet like that, as this is indeed very different from the rest of the album… Reminiscent of late 1990es X-Dream I think… Tasty! #09: Avasari [100 BPM] As legend prescribes it, we’re really chilling out for the final track here… Yeah, this is ambient! Experimental stuff, kept within a melodic, Goan framework… Nice, but not exactly the chill-out I prefer these days… Well, well… Another Suntrip release that stands out from the crowd… Just how much old-school goa is released nowadays? Besides from the Suntrip Records output, pretty much nothing, that’s how much! And though this album didn’t do as much for me as neither the Filteria album, nor the Apsara compilation it’s still pretty damn interesting… Evidently I can’t help comparing this to the Filteria album, which fit my tastes better… I could have wished for even more complexity, and perhaps the Hindi-influences are a little over the top sometimes… Also the flow is a little off and I would have arranged the tracks differently… But besides from that, I don’t have anything to criticise here… There are enough kick-ass tracks here to validate a purchase – and there are no bad tracks per se… Also the artwork is nothing short of beautiful and fits the music perfectly… Suntrip Records has once again proved that melodic goa is still very much alive – even in 2005! Way to go guys – you continue to distance yourself from the usual suspects! Old-school fans should most definitely check this out… As should fans of uplifting, joyous goa trance 2005-style… This is very it’s at! Enjoy! 18. Bede - Duende 10. 08’09” Aes Dana – Bam 11. 07’22” Solar Fields – Good Times .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/9bnu8 (all tracks!) Review: Misty mountains of Greece re-visited! Candyflip Records from Greece is back with the long awaited follow-up to the 2003 chill-compilation Mountain High… The first one was an epic journey of high-quality chill-out – and by the looks of the track list, this one is too… Alex Candy has spent more than 18 months hand-picking these tracks and I feel pretty confident he knows what he’s doing… Let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Cell – The Gate As on the first Mountain High compilation, we’re graced with a track by French sound-engineer Alex Scheffer… I find that the quality of his tracks often varies a great deal… Sometimes he creates amazing music, and other times mediocre stuff… But damn – this is good! Very chilled, laid-back tribal downbeat… Yeah, you’ll gather plenty of energy to climb the mountain with this ethno-lush and luxurious track! Very sweet! #02: Max Maxwell & TKY – Twilight A shorter version of this track was also released by Com.Pact Records earlier this year on the Unwind - A Journey Into Global Grooves compilation… Max Maxwell from New Zealand collaborates with Yaniv Zaidman on this dusky track… This is downbeat world-music relying heavily on sample-CDs, but with enough originality to keep me interested… Slow and poking – lukewarm and tasty… Reminds me of Asura… Pretty good, but not outstanding and a little too short… #03: Kick Bong – Way Of Life French producer Franck Jousselin was also on the first Mountain High with a very nice tribal track… And yeah, this is very tribal too… Complete with native chanting and rainforest showers…Add some dubby, slow-paced space stabs – and you’ve pretty much now what you’re dealing with… All in all a very nice, chilled hybrid track… I dig it! ;o) #04: Lideres Band feat. Bede – Close (Chill Mix) The Lideres Band was formed in Barcelona by Brazilian Rafael Mello (a.k.a. DJ Basbu) who was joined by percussionist and producer Jose España and bass player Juan Carlos… This is dubby ethno-electro-chill with emphasis on an enchanting flute line… Also the string-work is impressive here… Kinda reminds me of Gotan Project… A really, really nice tune! #05: Max Maxwell – Isha Max from Golden Bay, New Zealand is on his own on this track… Yeah, this is lush, plush world music… Ranging from laid-back dub to crossover downbeat… More flute-action + an impressive array of percussion… I really dig the heavily vocoded ethno-chants… They are probably from some sample CD, but they are very nicely put together here… Sounds like a tune straight out of a Macao Café compilation… Sweet! #06: Lideres Band – Secrets Of The Truth The Lideres posse again – with a strange Engrish track title!? This choon relies more on electro bits than the previous ones, and as such it seems less organic and peaceful to me… That being said, this is still a pretty decent track… Journey-wise it also fit in; it’s just not among the best here… #07: Kick Bong – Ballad Franck Jousselin makes his last appearance here – with a ballad! Well, it’s not really a ballad – more like intergalactic space chill… We’re approaching the top of the mounting coz this is pretty damn chilled… Icy cold actually… Lazy beats, dubby vibes, static background pads and slow bongos… Pretty nice but not as good as the previous Kick Bong track… #08: I.X.Ω.P. – Forever Behind the cryptic name above is Themis Xafis from Thessaloniki, Greece and he also had a track on the 2003 Iboga Records compilation Floating Point 01… This is a very rich, mature track – despite its peaceful appearance it’s packed to the rim with all kinds of advanced chill FX… I’m sure a lot of work went into this… And that paid off – this is a wonderful track! #09: Lideres Band feat. Bede – Duende Here’s the third track from the Spanish downbeat collective… Again the electro-influences are evident, and this doesn’t seem as peaceful as I would have liked it to be… Parts of this are actually pretty eerie and grim… I guess we’ve come across a dark cave on the way to the top of the mountain… A decent track… #10: Aes Dana – Bam Ahh – Ultimae exec Vincent Villuis… Never fails to impress me with his highly atmospheric chill-out… This is a perfect composition of ambient soundscapes evolving into progressive downbeat… Impressive to say the least! Viva la Bam! #11: Solar Fields – Good Times Who better to follow Aes Dana than Solar Fields? Magnus Birgersson is another chill heavy weight, and I really like his artic chill style… This is more pure ambient turning into intelligent downbeat… Floating, drifting, soothing – and eventually head-bopping! Nice track to finish the journey… So – how does this compare to the first Mountain High? Hard to say, but after some hardcore thinking I’ve come to the conclusion that this isn’t better – it’s equally good… There are some tracks here that don’t exactly rub me the right way – but then again, there are also a bunch of really awesome downbeat tracks… Also the cover art here is some of the most beautiful I’ve seen in a while… This compilation works pretty well both with and without headphones… And journey-wise I find it pretty good and varied… Lots of cross-over material here, which is a good thing! All in all, this is a solid downbeat compilation… Perhaps not essential, but still pretty damn good! A safe buy for hardened chillers though… Enjoy!
