Derango – TuMuLT Artist: Derango (Sweden) Title: TuMuLT Format: CD (digipack) Label: Inpsyde Media (Italy) Cat. #: IME 010 Distribution: Wirikuta Date: 20 October 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’40” Deranged 02. 07’50” Confusion Is Next 03. 08’10” Made Out Of Vapour 04. 07’43” Masterdamnit 05. 10’51” All Channels Open 06. 09’58” The Poisonous Square 07. 06’37” Lost Theory 08. 07’54” Fnatt 09. 08’38” We Are All Mad Here (Rmx) .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/9fgva (all tracks!) Review: Surgeon warning: This will fry your brain! After several delays and some hardcore internet hype, the long-awaited debut album by Swedish forest-trolls Derango (Jens Eriksson & Ola Eriksson) is finally out! Released by the infamous, nocturnal Italian label Inpsyde Media, this album has already caused quite a stir within psytrance circles… And I can totally understand why… Throughout the last year of so, I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing five compilations which featured Derango tracks – and every single track was a stand-out! These Swedish nut-jobs know their shit… I’ve been really looking forward to this album, so let’s get this introduction over with, and move onto the more fun stuff: The music! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Deranged Of course we start of with something deranged… This is Derango after all! From the first second the forest feel is very much present here… Birds singing, trolls tripping, acid flowing – more psychedelic FX are added and the track cruises at a comfortable speed… Not too fast, not too slow… Yeah, this is subtle psychedelia… But oh, this is so fucking deep and multi-layered… About half-way thru the track speeds up and goes even deeper underground – drenched in acid! Towards the end it breaks up again and becomes insanely fragmented – good luck trying to mix this on DJs! Haha – awesome style! Kick-ass opening track! #02: Confusion Is Next “So, what planet are you from?” Next up – confusion! That’s right – this is a very aptly named track! This is some confusing shit! Some sick, perverted, deranged, insane, alienated shit – and that’s all meant as superlatives mind you! This track pretty much sums up the Derango sound in its entire extrovert, psychedelic glory! Full-power, fast-paced multilayered, eclectic mushroom trance… Like Hux Flux on DMT! Best trip-tool so far… Smashing track! #03: Made Out Of Vapour Picture this: Intergalactic space-trolls have taken over the deep, dark Swedish forest now… Psychedelic hornets are all over the place with laser beams attached to their little heads… R2D2 is in there dancing and twirling like a fucking mad droid on dwarf mush… And it’s all happening in slow motion – and warp speed! At the same time! Suddenly there is a tsunami of liquid acid flooding the place – people are electric and shapes and colours are changing before your very eyes… Can you dig it? I can – this is a fucking HUGE track… Immensely deranged! #04: Masterdamnit Breakz, bleeps, cuckoo watches, digital water, analogue synths, old school drum programming, fucking crows on PCP, twirling melodies, geo-metric patterns, cut beats, off-key kicks, acid mayhem, electronic farts, robot burps, space drums, troll chanting, power electronics, quantum leaps in time, matter & energy… And that’s describing the first minute only! This is psychedelia madames et monsieurs! Brace yourself! #05: All Channels Open Sadly we’re already half way through now – but hey, at least all the channels are open! And thank Hofmann for that! Though drenched in subtle acid, the style here is maybe a little too held back… Supposedly! This is all part of the Derango master plan to take over the world! In all fairness though, I must say that this track is not as good as the previous four… It’s still good though – trippy as fuck, and miles about your standard, alleged psychedelic music… And the last rundown is just fucking impressive! A trippy, though introvert track… Not bad at all, but not among the best here… #06: The Poisonous Square “You have to wake up, there's-- What is it? What's wrong? There's something here. Do you see anything? You're probably just dreaming or some…Whoa! There is-- there is something! What the hell is that? What do you see? It's a square. It's just floating. Now there's two - it's multiplying! Maybe that's what a four-dimensional object looks like?…I hate it. It sounds wrong… It's stunning! The math of it - it's a perfect quadrangular oscillation!” I’m fortunate enough to have sampled those alleged poisonous squares – and what a fucking rush that is! Just like this track… The intro is very atmospheric and spooky as hell – seriously this is what it’s all about! Gone are the grim, introvert speculations from the previous track, and we’re left with full-power, in-ya-face psychedelia – Derango style! This track just grabs you by the balls and drags you in… Like those small paper squares! Resistance is futile… This head rush is indefeasible! Don’t fight it… just lean back and enjoy the ride! Perfect track! #07: Lost Theory And we’re back to reality… For a brief moment only though! This is perhaps the darkest track here, complete with razor sharp stabbing sounds, high-pitched static and even church bells! Holy fuck, just check out that sick, demented melody… Deranged yes, derailed no! This is seriously complex, multilayered and highly fragmented – forest trance 101! Gnomes, elfs, trolls, pixies – they are all over the place! Just another Saturday night in Malmø, Sweden… Kicking track! #08: Fnatt I dunno about Swedish, but in Danish ‘fnat’ means scabies… And yeah, I could see that… This is a rabid bitch of a track! We’re still tripping extremely hard on shrooms here, and this track has nothing on the latest Parvati Records compilation Psy Stories… A very similar style indeed! Fast-paced, experimental, wall-to-wall psychedelic hyper trance… Oh yeah, this is mesmerizing, hypnotic stuff… The light, naïve melody half-way through strikes a notable contrast to the grim, acid-ridden, underground sounds… The Derango guys are once again show-casing their immense skills and outer worldly capability of creating alien music… Sweet track! #09: We Are All Mad Here (Rmx) “It was as though I had been here before. I mean, we all have moments of déjà vu but this was ridiculous!” All good things must come to an end – including Derango’s debut album… AFAIK this is a remix to an older tune. Sadly I haven’t heard it, so I can’t really tell you what was changed for this remix… Anyway, this is classic Derango right there – instantly trippy and pretty damn scary! The eerie Jack Nicholson sample from The Shining isn’t exactly making it less scary – oh yes, this is eerie, haunting, spooky stuff… Still very trippy, but with the added spook spice… Boo fucking hoo! I like the tribal drum action going on half-way through… Who would have thought? Another fine track that sadly ends this album… The ground disappeared from beneath And all that was solid is air I tumbled end over end into my nature And darkness appeared from below Carrying voices of query, voices of theory Dark voices, near me All around and reason is drowned By the sound of clamour The pound of the hammer Is confusion, illusion? Plunged into shadows and mist I catch my breath, frightened But I will not face death still unenlightened! Welcome to the wonderful world of advanced forest music! Yeah, that Penny Shaw poem seemed just about right when trying to describe the feeling you get from listening to this magnificent album… This kicks the shit out of most I’ve heard this year and is definitely a strong contender for forest trance album of the year… Derango has their very own style, and they stay true to that throughout this album – but still leave room for experimentation… Yeah, this album never gets dull and unlike other off-key albums, I can actually listen to this again and again in one sitting... Or standing… Or trip! There isn’t a single bad track here – they all stand out in one way or the other… I like pretty much every single minute here, and I’m so relieved that this is something as rare as an album that actually lives up to the hype… The expectations were sky high, but they were met! This is such a mature album – maybe not easily accessible, but eventually rewarding… It’s nothing short of a blast! The cover art by Emil Wennborn is in perfect harmony with the actual music, and all in all this is worth every single penny… I give this album my warmest recommendations… Fans of highly psychedelic, eclectic forest trance needs to own this album… That’s an order! Get it before it’s deemed illegal! …Enjoy! V/A – The Numinous Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: The Numinous Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Ketuh Records (Portugal/Austria) Cat. #: KTHCD011 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 17 October 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’46” Gappeq – Tower Of Babel 02. 07’44” Pondscum - Formal Absences Of Precious Things 03. 07’10” Silent Horror – Hayblaah (Rmx) 04. 07’28” Iron Madness - Jihad Of Islam (Rmx) 05. 07’17” Wizack Twizack – Sweeden Weeden 2 06. 06’36” Sungirl vs. Iron Madness – Madness Of Sun 07. 07’56” Xatrik – Waki Tabacci 08. 07’04” Slug – Break Out 09. 06’49” Psyboriginal vs. Daheen – Freak (Rmx) 10. 08’55” Tryambaka & D_Maniacs – La Cosa Nostra .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/c75er (all tracks!) Review: Spiritually elevated psytrance – allegedly! So, what is numinous all about? It’s a word first coined by a German theologian, Rudolf Otto in his work The Idea of the Holy. It describes that sense of awe-inspiring wonder, which one might feel in certain places or situations where one senses the presence of God or spiritual beings - the sense of 'other-ness' about the situation… Indeed a pompous title for the newest Ketuh compilation – a label on the rise with a steady increase in quality… The last compilation Hyperspatial Chrysalis was really awesome, so that’s gonna be hard to top… Let’s try though! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Gappeq – Tower Of Babel This is the fifth Ketuh compilation to open with a track by Czech producer Jiri Tomasek – and as usual we’re exposed to a highly experimental track… Just check out the gritty intro – and the hard-hitting, metallic, punchy bassline + the flaring acid-lines… Also the breakdown is farrrrking brilliant – would mix in well with most Parvati-choons! Pure underground hypertrance! Great stuff – very trippy! #02: Pondscum - Formal Absences Of Precious Things Aussie producer Luke Danielewski is also becoming a Ketuh regular – with his VERY dark, deep, technoid style… I’ve had some problems with this particular style in the past – but it seems he’s lightened up just a little bit… Don’t get me wrong, this is still VERY dark, horror-trance – crossing well over into minimal techno… Reminds me of Kemic-Al, oCeLoT or a more psychedelic version of The Delta… Luckily Danielewski makes sure to season the whole thing with a healthy dose of psychedelia… Good, but not among the best tracks here… #03: Silent Horror – Hayblaah (Rmx) “We’re gonna steal a van full of drugs and make a good escape! You’re gonna die in this city...Die! Die! Die! This stinking nest of hatred – we’re gonna kill ‘em all!” Silent Horror is Jigar Shah from Pune, India… He made his debut recently on the Refused compilation released by Devils Mind Records – and as you might have guessed, this is more of the same dark, relentless Halloween-trance… Packed to the rim with haunting, razor-sharp acid-lines and hard-hitting basslines… All over the place! Acid galore! Welcome to Acid Ville! Very Phyx-like really! Would go down very well in a Goa Gil set… I’m all about acid – but damn, this is too much of a good thing… Acid overkill! Man – I never thought I’d hear myself say this, but: Turn down the acid-level already! Still a pretty decent track though… #04: Iron Madness - Jihad Of Islam (Rmx) “Who’s that? Why didn't you tell me these things were immune to silver and garlic? I didn't know! Mmhmm... If you did, would you have told me? I think you know the truth when you hear it. Mmhmm...Then why didn't he kill you?” Ziv Viner from Israel is next – with the controversial track name… I’m not gonna go into politics – so let’s talk about the track…The acid is still all over the place here – but it’s more balanced out! Nice! Check out the very well-constructed peaks and changes in pace here… It’s nerve-wrecking at times! Cool track! #05: Wizack Twizack – Sweeden Weeden 2 Sweedish producer Tommy Axelsson really impressed me with his track on the Yage Records compilation Electric Embryo released earlier this year… That track had a very raw, edgy sound – with rolling sequencing-work and distorted melodies… And sure enough – this is more Swedish forest trance… Pure underground stuff riddled with acid… Just the way I like it! Sweeeeeet tweeed leeet track! #06: Sungirl vs. Iron Madness – Madness Of Sun As on the latests Ketuh compilation, Russian producer Yana Polishchuk is in cahoots with Ziv Viner… They really impressed on Hyperspatial Chrysalis and I’m happy to say that this track is equally good… This is a bombardment of your senses with wild, intense, multilayered, highly complex psytrance… Not as dark as some of the previous tracks, but equally deep and instantly trippy… Check out the screaming whales in the background… Awesome track! #07: Xatrik – Waki Tabacci South African Greg Hamber released his debut album Project A on Digital Psionics last year… A very unique, complex album that really challenged your senses… I’m afraid this track isn’t quite as good as most of the album tracks – well, that was hard to top and this is still a pretty decent tune! Tons of digital farts and electronic burps, seasoned with neurotic melodies, pumping basslines and a big splash of acid… Pretty good tune! #08: Slug – Break Out We stay in South Africa with this tune by Liam Gibbs… A guy who also collaborated on the above mentioned album… This is indeed very South African – would fit right in on a Timecode or Nexus Media release… Very bouncy and funky – and more melodic than some of the previous tracks… But the somehow the novelty is starting to wear off a little… And what’s up with that demented melody that pops up occasionally? This would probably be a stand-out track on another compilation, but the competition is fierce on this compilation, so here it’s just plain good… #09: Psyboriginal vs. Daheen – Freak (Rmx) “If there’s trouble, all us freaks have is each other!” Marc Freund from Australia made his debut on the last Ketuh compilation – I was really impressed by his crazy Logic Bomb-on-PCP sound… On this track he collaborates with fellow Australian David Le Breton – and I hold him responsible for the cliché metal guitars and strange vocals here… What the fuck? It all starts out so well – with a pounding, yet melodic approach… Bizarre really, but somehow strangely appealing – until the dreaded sample and the guitars make their appearances. Yuck - this sound like something Skazi would pull of… This is definitely not my cup of chai! #10: Tryambaka & D_Maniacs – La Cosa Nostra “Funny how? He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did you say? Funny how? You know - you're funny! Let me understand this cause, I don't know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how? I mean, funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh... I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?” Brace yourself – this is the mafia morning tune! Tiago Pimentel from Portugal is another Ketuh regular – now working with someone called D_Maniacs… The first half is pretty experimental – in both a positive and negative way… I’m not too fond of the cheddar-like, fluffy melodies – but on the other hand I kinda like the lazy, yet deep rhythm section… The track changes direction half-way through though – it shifts into more sustained, acid-ridden psytrance… With raven cries and Goodfellas samples! A funny, yet not too interesting track… Earlier I mentioned how Ketuh has managed to steadily increase the quality of their releases – and I stand by that. This is a very sweet compilation - slightly better than the awesome Hyperspatial Chrysalis. There are enough awesome tracks here – and despite maybe the last two tracks, I like everything on this compilation… The flow is pretty damn good and we’re exposed to a variety of styles within darkish psytrance… There’s something for everyone who likes it dark here! The art work by Symmetric Design is very cool – I guess the inspiration came from one of the classic Carl Cox covers… All in all, this is a very solid compilation… Tons of great tracks here – and a few misses! Also, I didn’t get the whole spirituality theme… But oh well, you can’t win them all I guess… Devoted Ketuh fans + fans of acid-ridden, darkish psytrance should most definitely check this out! … Enjoy! Mr. Peculiar – Mind-dala Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Mr. Peculiar (Australia) Title: Mind-dala Format: CD (digipack) Label: Sonic Dragon Records (Hong Kong) Cat. #: SDRECCD03 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 15 July 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’17” Born On Mars 02. 08’28” Compressing Time 03. 07’26” African Soul 04. 07’40” Brainsnake 05. 07’43” Mind-Dala 06. 08’19” Timeline 07. 07’57” Crystal Energy 08. 06’43” Silver Clouds 09. 06’46” Yellow Solar Human .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/abhm5 (all tracks!) Review: Eclectic full-on! This is the third album forged by Dustin Saalfield in his Peculiar Patterns Studio in Melbourne, Australia… Despite his rather large back-catalogue, I haven’t really heard much from this guy – but I’ve heard quite a lot of good things about his work… So I guess starting at the third album is as good a place as any to start… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Born On Mars “Ever been to Mars? …I was born on Mars!” A harmonic, floating intro is soon shredded to bits by stark, dripping electronica and a solid full-on bassline… Tweaks, bleaks, drips and drops… And enough uplifting elements to crack a big old happy smile on your face… Yeah – this is full-on morning trance, but oh my – it’s so good! So subtle, so powerful, so phat… The climax part sends memories back to early IM or recent Protoculture choons… Powerful stuff! #02: Compressing Time “It’s just an illusion. It’s not real!” A short intro followed by a heavily compressed bassline + tons of melodic pads… It shows that this guy has really put a lot of effort into the rhythm section here… It’s instantly groovy and has a progressive trance touch to it… Think Gaudium or Antix and add some full-on morning sounds and you’re pretty close to the sound of this track… Generally I like it, although it’s not as potent as the previous track… Maybe even a little cheesy… Only a little though! #03: African Soul Flaring, floating full-on here – extremely melodic, and uplifting as fuck… The African touch isn’t too evident, but I’d like to think I can hear some rain-forest/savannah influences here… Again we’re in the better end of the full-on spectre – but it’s still not as good as the first track… I do like the acoustic touch though + the melodies + the crisp ‘n’ clean, distilled sound here… Fine track! #04: Brainsnake Feast on this tribal-slash-melodic, ass-shaking, foot-moving, head-bopping, quality piece of uplifting music …It’s like there’s a snake in your brain! …Well, maybe not, but this is most definitely a nice track! Very well-constructed and tasty… #05: Mind-Dala Welcome to full-on track construction 101 – this is how it’s done! Oh yes, this title track is exactly the reason why I never fully gave up on full-on… It’s still alive and thriving! Melodic yes, but it also has some harder elements (acid!) which I really take well to… This will work wonders both at home, but most definitely also on the dancefloor… Observe how the track evolves – it builds and builds until that final bit – and then the subtle come-down to regain your strength… #06: Timeline Oh my, now this is uplifting morning trance if there ever was uplifting morning trance… Again the Protoculture-comparison is an easy one to make… Also stuff like Silicon Sound, 12 Moons or early-morning Jaïa springs to mind… Beautiful floating melodies seasoned with more acoustic guitar, a progressive rhythm section + all kinds of soothing, placid filtering… All this without crossing over into cheesy territory… Now that’s impressive! A nice little track… #07: Crystal Energy We stay on the same, well-polished, take-chances full-on morning path here… Only this is slightly harder… I like it hard (no pun intended!) and where the previous track maybe lacked a little bite – this one has the bite… I really like the orchestral touch this track has – those massive, wall-to-wall reverbs go down really well… Yeah – this is one of the best tracks here! #08: Silver Clouds More morning trance fuel here… This is just as ultra-crisp and uplifting as the previous track, though perhaps a little less eclectic… The soft, calm voices floating in the background would normally piss me off, but not in this track… It all comes together so well here… The perfect soundtrack for the exact moment the first ray of sunlight breaks through the silver clouds… Another very well produced track! #09: Yellow Solar Human The last track is another exposure of high quality full-on – Mr. Peculiar breaks out the last batch of well-polished, dancefloor approved trippy elements… Spicy full-on designed to boost the energy level of people who have danced the night away… Subtle, melodic, danceable morning trance – that never gets tiresome! Sweet track! What a remarkably nice album! Yes, this is good full-on morning trance! I’ve often bashed full-on for being formulaic, predictable and boring… But this is so very far from being boring – this is highly eclectic and evolving… And extremely well-produced! It’s all good – but the best thing is, that this doesn’t cross over into clubby, commercial cheese… Nice going Mr. Saalfield! The album was released back in July 2005, but I don’t see it as a summer album per se… No way – this will works wonders 365 days a year for years to come… Obviously there are tracks I like better than others, but in general terms the quality level is very, very impressive here… There are no bad tracks, and the favourite tracks are little wonders on their own… Mr. Peculiar also made the beautiful artwork here - I see it as a picture of a person with thousands of thoughts/ideas/sounds emerging from that person’s mind… This fits the music perfectly! Morning trance aficionados should not be without this album, nor should fans of intelligent, uplifting full-on… It’s pretty damn great… Enjoy! Look - this is Psynews... This has nothing to do with Belgian forums or your reviews there... All I wanted to make sure, was that ALL USEFUL information about a certain release is accessible from the appropriate review forum - that's helpful for future readers - unlike those threads that vanish in the general forum! The reason I linked to the those two threads was NOT to bash you guys - it was to help future readers... Who would come here to the indexed review part of the forum to seek information on any given release! If you really think I was I was "bashing" your review skills - why would I link to the threads I disliked? Your threads had some valuable info - info I wanted to make sure didn't get lost - hence the linking! Is this clear now, or do I need to spell it out? In five years, when I wan't to check up on the Penta-album - I go to the review section, select the year 2005 - find this thread - and can easily click on to those threads I linked too for further info... It's as simple as that! That's all I have to say - if you guys want to discuss it further, I'd be happy to do so. Please open a thread about it in the offtopic forum and leave this thread for actual reviews! Thank you! /DP

People were still making comments resembling reviews in those threads.... Comments that might actually come in handy to future readers... That's why I linked to them! I have no problems with the threads in artist news and label announcements... I was just preserving the actually facts for the future! /DP
