  2. V/A – Psy Stories Hi-res: front Artist: Various Title: Psy Stories Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Parvati Records (Denmark) Cat. #: PRVCD10 Distribution: Wirikuta Date: 6 October 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’16” Mussy Moody – Magnetic FX 02. 07’59” Hokus Pokus – Zim Zalabim 03. 07’55” Jahbo – Chronic Mnemonic 04. 07’13” Snap, Crackle & Pop – Where Is Pop? 05. 06’44” Grapes Of Wrath – Goa Helvede Til 06. 07’03” KinJahJah – What Has Begun Cannot Be Stopped… 07. 09’41” Derango – The Arm 08. 06’44” Strangers - Moruka 09. 07’26” Red i Jedeye – Mind Expansions Review: Gob smacking trip tales… Parvati Records from Denmark is out with their 10th CD-release… A psychedelic monster compilation showcasing mostly Danish artists collaborating with the usual hypertrance suspects…The quality level is always very high with the Parvati label– and pretty much everything they’ve released has been essential… Can they continue raising the standards of modern psytrance? Well – let’s find out… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Mussy Moody – Magnetic FX This stompfest is kicked into gear by the Danish producer Thy Trung… One of the few female underground producers… Just as her track on the Trishula compilation Ignis Fatuus, this is dark, gritty industrial psytrance with a rolling bassline and an overall bleak, metallic surface... There’s a whole lotta acid-tweaking going on here – making this very psychedelic, but somehow kinda minimal too… This track works wonders as a trip-tool – but I’m not sure it works quite as well on the dancefloor… A decent track! #02: Hokus Pokus – Zim Zalabim AFAIK this is the debut track from the Danish producers Anders Eskildsen & Christian Kaas Andersen… The intro is very cool here – the guys are playing around with stereo FX and I can vividly imagine how trippy this would sound on a big-ass sound-system… An eerie, haunting atmosphere is slowly developing for almost 3 minutes – and even after that, the track never goes full-blown… Sure, there’s a bassline and tons of acid-lines – but still… This is subtle, held-back psychedelic trance – bubbling with joy and keeping a dark, murky atmosphere intact… Spooky, mesmerizing, trippy... What a great debut! Sweet track! #03: Jahbo – Chronic Mnemonic “What the hell is this? It’s my media-induced, paranoid-delusional nightmare!” Danish producer Roelike Jahbo is pretty much the personification of the infamous Århus-sound… He has released a number of benchmark tracks under his own name as well as a bunch of collaborations with other artists – Like the brilliant Meteloids/Grapes Of Wrath album Tits On Fire released last year…Anyway, this track is more subtle psychedelia… Trippy, underground night-trance – drenched in digital farts and electronic burps – and enough twirling acid-lines to crack a zillion smiles… Check out how the track totally changes direction after the breakdown… Instantly shroom-friendly and pure dancefloor fodder… A true psy story! Brilliant track! #04: Snap, Crackle & Pop – Where Is Pop? “Take her to the Racoon City Facility, then assemble the team. We are reopening the Hive; I wanna know, what went on down there!” Time for some psychedelic cereal! This is a collaboration between Grapes Of Wrath (Jacob Skouborg & Morten Wurtz) & Kindzadza (Leo Greshilov)… Forged in the deepest underground, this is an epic constellation – of gargantuan dimensions! This is bleak, hard-hitting, skull-crunching, night-time trance… Darker than dark and psychedelic as fuck! A thousand shades of black + and one mean-ass wookie that has a thing or two to say… A very, very unique track and another really awesome psy story! #05: Grapes Of Wrath – Goa Helvede Til Here’s more Jaffa & Monno mayhem… The title is a Danish play on words that can’t really be translated into English… Something like ‘Goa To Hell’… Ah well, this is more distinct Århus underground music… Fast-paced, darkish, industrial hyper-trance…I think this might be the fastest track here – for a while, it gets insanely fast… Reaching psy warp-speed! Ho – ly – shit … How’s that for full-blown party-music? Eat your heart out – this is pure evil! Almost too evil – yikes! But a sweet track nevertheless… #06: KinJahJah – What Has Begun Cannot Be Stopped… “What has begun cannot be stopped. The time for this world is over!” Here’s another very interesting collaboration – this time between Kindzadza (Leo Greshilov) & Roelike Jahbo… A match made in hell! Fuck yes; this is what I’m talking about… Crank up the old trip-o-meter; pound a dozen shrooms and slurp a handful of microdots – and you’re still nowhere near the sound of this psychedelic bombshell… Pumping night-time trance with chain-sawing acid-lines and enough gore to scare the living shit out of anyone… And it can’t be stopped! Save yourself – this track will utterly annihilate your soul! …An amazing track! #07: Derango – The Arm TuMuLT is the name of the upcoming debut album from Swedish shroom-lords Derango (Jens Eriksson & Ola Eriksson)… Surely an album to look out for, as pretty much everything I’ve heard from these guys have been pure gold… And this track is no exception – this is text-book Swedish forest-trance – complete with tripping trolls and wicked pixies… This is perhaps not as dark as the previous tracks, but it makes up for that in its off-the-chart trip-factor… This is mushroom-trance if there ever was mushroom trance – psychedelic down to the last second… Perfect for tripping! Great track! #08: Strangers – Moruka “And now for something completely different!” And here’s a psy story from Greece – told by Stefanos Gkogkakos, Pr. by S.Gkogkakos & Ilias Besios… This is Halloween trance – spooky to the core and dark as always… The electronic signals and twirling melodies are both annoying and relentless – but they work wonders and will cause havoc on the trance floors… I really dig the pounding qualities in this track… But I guess, this is not as much a psy story as it is a pure, banging dancefloor anthem… Fuel for the feet! Nice track! #09: Red i Jedeye – Mind Expansions We end the journey where we started: In Århus, Denmark… This is a new project by Stephanus Smit… The intro is pure old-school acid – add some nostalgic computer game samples – mix with a mean-ass Århus-bassline – stir well with even more acid – and you’ve got another psychedelic stomper! The shiva-samples are perhaps a little over the top, but this is still just as psychedelic as they come… Fuel for the mind! A fine debut and a fine way to end another brilliant Parvati compilation! Klonk! (The sound of my jaw dropping!) Damn – just when I thought that I’d heard it all, Parvati pulls out another ace… This compilation is so fucking sweet I don’t even know where to begin… I mean, just look at my indication of favourite tracks below – that’s all tracks except one! Yes – this *is* the best thing Parvati has ever released – it even tops the brilliant Psychedelically Yours compilations + the sweet GOW/Meteloids and Para Halu albums… And that’s saying a lot! It’s essential! I really like how we get a mix of trip-friendly and dancefloor friendly tracks here – the flow is close to perfection and the amount of awesome standout tracks are simply impressive! There’s enough psychedelia to go around twice here – and anyone who’ve lost faith in psychedelic music needs only listen to this compilation to regain faith… I mean it – this is a stellar compilation that deserves to sell a billion copies! The music is very close to perfection and the fractal artwork may be simple, but instantly cool… Connoisseurs of trippy, mind-expanding, psychedelic music should not be without this CD… I will not hesitate to give this my highest, most deep-felt recommendation… An essential purchase! …Enjoy! 8. V/A – Double D Hi-res: front + back Artist: Various Title: Double D – Compiled by Ashrun Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Dance N Dust (Israel) Cat. #: DNDCD05 Distribution: Cosmophilia Date: September 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’56” Shaman - Bomullstuss 02. 07’46” Decoy – Fatty Finn 03. 09’34” Pythagoraz – Constrainment 04. 07’24” DJ Asherun vs. Darwish – We Are Stoned 05. 09’17” Remote Access – Doors To Dream 06. 06’18” El Zisco - Littleway 07. 07’39” Decoy - Suparoo 08. 08’56” Itaitaiko – In The Groove 09. 08’51” Threshold Productions – Sound System .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/dzk3o (all tracks!) Review: Double groove! Dance N Records from Israel didn’t really make any notice of themselves until the release of the Dustynation series – two CDs released in 2004 that featured some of the top producers of progressive trance… Now the label is out with its fifth CD release – and once again the focus is on groovy progressive trance… The tracklist reveals a mix of new and established artists… Let’s dig deeper… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Shaman – Bomullstuss To be honest, I haven’t heard too many of Shaman’s many compilation tracks despite the fact that this Swedish producer (Andreas Henning) has released loads of tracks… Anyway, this is pure, percussion-driven progressive trance with a techy touch… Stiff metallic beats and groovy rhythm pads… Electro-tribal hypnotizing trance… Sounds kinda German in all its cold, stiff harshness – but there’s enough Swedish warmth and a couple of little melodies here to balance things out… I like it, despite the facts that it’s kinda monotonous at times… A nice little track! #02: Decoy – Fatty Finn Ian Chaplin & Philip Rex are a couple of hard-core jazz musicians from Australia – and they are now crossing over into progressive trance! Cool! The intro is maybe a little annoying but the rest of the track takes care of that… This is low-key progressive morning trance – soaked in reverb and with a ton of melodic pads flying around in the background… Kinda experimental, oddball and heavily fragmented… I like experimentation like this… Another nice track! #03: Pythagoraz – Constrainment Rasmus Tue Jørgensen from Denmark has been a classical pianist for many years – and this is his first release ever! This is more uplifting, progressive morning trance… Melodic at heart and with enough progressive elements to satisfy the purists… Again this track is drenched in reverb and twirling little melodies which helps ensure the deep, phat groove… Also the break is fucking sweet! Nicey nice! All in all this is a very notable debut from Pythagoraz…. I’m impressed! #04: DJ Asherun vs. Darwish – We Are Stoned “Now listen to this! I tell you about Texas radio and the Big Beat! … Reach in your heads! … Out here in the perimeter there are no stars …Out here we are stoned!” Asher Ezra from Israel is the man behind the Dance N Dust label – and he also compiled this CD… On this track he collaborates with fellow countryman David Abramov…This is still very much progressive trance, but the pace has quickened now – and this is more dancefloor friendly than some of the previous tracks… I like the classic Doors samples which was also used in X-Dreams remix of the classic E-Rection track Out Here We are Stoned… This one is longer though, but fits the track perfectly… Another fine track! #05: Remote Access – Doors To Dream Szymon Kupsik from Poland is another act that I have limited knowledge about… Anyway, it’s definitely approaching night-time now and this track is the tranciest so far… Fused somewhere in between groovy, tribal progressive trance – and melodic psytrance… A radical departure from the previous tracks – and this one kinda throws the flow a little off I think… Not a bad track at all – in fact it’s very nice! #06: El Zisco - Littleway Francisco Oyarce from Germany is another newbie… This track is banging from the get-go – oh yes, we’re definitely in pound-mode now… This is an experimental, genre-bender on the loose… Fusing all kinds of styles from progressive trance over house, electro and club trance… To be honest, I don’t really like it… It’s too… Clubby? The bridge part is cool and all, but I still tend to skip this track… #07: Decoy – Suparoo Ian Chaplin & Philip Rex are back with another track from down under … We stay in cheesier territory on this tribal-stomping, funky number… A well-polished, uplifting track with an impressive rhythm section… It has an old-school feel to it – along with a touch of Antix… A nice combo for sure! This is however – a little too clubby for my taste… But nice nevertheless! #08: Itaitaiko – In The Groove ItaiTaiko is Itay Berger from Israel… Perhaps he’s better known under his Kukan Dub Lagan alias under which he released the brilliant debut album Life Is Nice on Candyflip in 2004… Itay is also a highly skilled progressive producer, and I really liked his track on the compilation Magnetic Storm released by Groove Zone in early 2005… This is raw, gritty, dirty progressive trance – and really, really groovy! Oh yes – this is really cool… Just check out the break-down and the phat groove that follows! Sweet track! #09: Threshold Productions – Sound System Threshold Productions is Torsten Edwinson from Sweden and he’s been hyped a lot lately… This track was already released on vinyl by Dance N Dust and now it’s on CD… Dreamy, floating and uplifting progressive trance here – with hints of electro… This is all very fine and dandy, but I’m afraid it’s too commercial for my taste… A decent track! Right, this is pleasant compilation… There a no bad tracks here, but obviously there are some I like better than others… For me the first part of the CD is the best, whereas I’m not particularly impressed by the more commercial tracks on the second half… Also, I’m not sure how well the flow works here – I would have put the tracks in a different order… Anyway, the mastering by Space Cat sounds great to me – and I really like the cover-art… It holds a few little nice surprises! All in all, this is a pretty nice compilation… For sure not the best progressive compilation out this year, but definitely not the worst either… You could do a lot worse that this one! I like the fact that we get exposed to a lot of new names here… Nice! Fans of progressive trance with cross-over potential will most likely dig this piece of plastic… Get into the double groove! … Enjoy! Favourites: 1, 2, 3(!), 4, 5, 8(!) 13. Well, if this was a hardcore rap-hiphop forum, I guess you'd be referred to as half white... No?
  14. Once in while? Occasionally? From time to time? Once in a blue moon - sure, that makes sense... Blue moons are not that frequent, I guess... Personally I like house music - especially housey progressive trance...
  15. Actually, that's not far from being true... I'm currently reading the book "Last night a DJ saved my life: the history of the disc jockey" by Bill Brewster & Frank Broughton which goes through this... It happened simultanously in London & New York in the late 1960s and onwards... (Obviously the precise origins can always be debated, but RAH pretty much speaks the truth...) More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music /DP
  16. That's a valid, sociological questions... It's has been debated on Isratrance a couple of years ago and here are some of the arguments from that thread: But then again - Detroit techno was born by blacks, right? So what gives? There are indeed black people on psytrance: Mumbali - American producer Ian St. Paul, cofounder of TIP records. Keez - Danish old-school DJ Propulsion/Samsara - UK DJ ResonatorXL in Texas + obviously more... I've seen black people at parties + festivals.. But I agree, that the percentage is VERY low... And I can't come up with a proper answer why... /DP

V/A – Multiple Personalities Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: Multiple Personalities Format: CD (digipack) Label: Manic Dragon Records (Hong Kong) Cat. #: MDREC-03 Distribution: Arabesque Date: July 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’33” Terminator vs. CPC – Mosgortrans 02. 07’29” ParaNoize vs. Claw - Vampire Legend 03. 07’32” Xenomorph vs. Xenomorph - Schzoid Transpersonal.Progressions 04. 08’26” Procs vs. Captain Ifan (aka Duck Off) - We Are Closed 05. 08’00” Dejan vs. Jelly Headz (aka Many Faces) - Freakin' Six-Pack! 06. 07’13” Mubali vs. Ocelot - Mood Swinger 07. 06’44” Sequipa vs. Baphomet Engine - Multiple Personalities 08. 06’44” Quasar vs. Dylalien (aka Fractal Cowboys) - Alien Together Now (Baba mix) 09. 07’16” Kulu vs. Strangers - Unbelievable .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/aqua2 (all tracks!) Review: Nocturnal Chainsaw Kerfuffle! This is the third CD from the Hong Kong based Manic Dragon Records (the evil offspring of the parent label Sonic Dragon Records!)… Looking at the track list here reveals quite a lot of famous names within the horror-trance segment… Xenomorph has a track on here and he also mastered the whole shebang… That reads quality in my book and something tells me we’re in for a scary ride… Let’s find out! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Terminator vs. CPC – Mosgortrans [148 BPM] We kick off with a Russian collaboration between Zolotarenko Viktor and Radostavin Vlad… The latter is also known from his Osom alter ego… Anyway, this is some severely hard-core banging shit… I’m sure the Russian voice-samples in the intro talks about something trippy, as this is definitely mushroom-music… Technoid to the bone, dark as a chimney sweeper’s ass and scary as hell… Beep beep beeeeeeeeeeep! Groovy psytrans nite-stuff! Nice! #02: ParaNoize vs. Claw - Vampire Legend [148 BPM] “I… am… Dracula!” ParaNoize is Alex Ladyzanskyi from Israel and he has really impressed me with his tracks on Ketuh Records… Claw is Charalambos Pieris from Cyprus and he has also impressed me with his stuff… So, it’s a couple of cool guys collaborating on this vampire-track… This is less groovy than the previous track – the bassline is bleaker somehow, and the first part is way too repetitive for my taste! But – it gets better as the track progresses, though I find that parts of this track are simply too damn unstructured… I do however like the ghostly voice samples and other scary stuff in this track… Benchmark Halloween trance! #03: Xenomorph vs. Xenomorph - Schzoid Transpersonal.Progressions [145 BPM] German producer Mark Petrick is the Godfather of dark trance! His debut album Cassandra's Nightmare (Koyote Records/1998) is a masterpiece within the genre and Qlippoth is pretty damn good too… This guy seldom lets me down, and this is no exception… We start with a trademark Xenomorph atmospheric intro – before we launch into a hard-hitting, gut-kicking, acid-ridden night-time track… Hypnotic, atmospheric and scary with all its eerie, outer worldly sounds & tweaks… I mean, just check the haunting breakdown @ 5’12 and the explosion that follows! Fuck yes; this is just the way I like my darkish psy to sound… Brilliant track! #04: Procs vs. Captain Ifan (aka Duck Off) - We Are Closed [148 BPM] “Sorry we’re closed!... The front door is open – again!” Duck Off is Mikael Stegman (Procs) and Captain Ifan from Sweden… The recent Schlabbaduerst 007 compilation featured the absolutely AMAZING track Mozart Firefox made by these Swedish nutters… A monstrous track that will be hard to surpass – ever! But this track makes a fair attempt for sure… Oh yes, this is true psychedelic trance in its most underground form… Incredibly introvert, but oh so trippy at the same time… The constant changes in pace, the haunting atmosphere, the raw industrial edge – it all helps in creating a truly immense track! Deep, eerie, underground forest trance – washed down with mushroom tea! Insanely amazing! #05: Dejan vs. Jelly Headz (aka Many Faces) - Freakin' Six-Pack! [150 BPM] “Damn right you will – and bring that six-pack, this could take a while!” Dejan Mihailovic and Karim Gressier from France have both released stuff that I really liked – especially on Trishula Records and Dropout Productions! This track is no exception – this is more fast-paced, multi-layered, dark-as-fuck night-time trance… Banging basslines and enough acid to freak out the girls… The break-downs are particularly well executed and *will* freak you out! Beware! Nice track! #06: Mubali vs. Ocelot - Mood Swinger [144 BPM] Here’s Greg Farley (Mumbali) in cahoots with Aaron Peacock who released his kick-ass second album vectorSelector on Dropout Productions earlier this year… Another match made in hell! And just like on the oCeLot album there is some serious tweaking going on here – holy shit! An acid-ridden glam-fest taking place well out in space… Tweak-o-rama! A very liquid, yet industrial sound is present throughout the track – kick-ass! Sadly, the emphasis on acid seems to be the only thing going on here – I could have wished for some more driving elements and more flow… A decent track! #07: Sequipa vs. Baphomet Engine - Multiple Personalities [148 BPM] Sequipa is Stefano Braggio and Baphomet Engine consists of Fabio & Louis – all from the motherland: Brazil! I haven’t heard much from these guys, but I do know that Brazil churns out some seriously wikkid choons… The track is by far the most melodic one on this compilation – though it still has a very distinct, underground flavour… Driving at an incredible pace and building tension all the way though… These guys manage to create a sort of schizophrenic feeling – complete with spooky, undecipherable voice-samples and an overall haunting atmosphere… All very nicely done! A fine title track! #08: Quasar vs. Dylalien (aka Fractal Cowboys) - Alien Together Now (Baba mix) [153 BPM] “Ready to try acid? Yes – I’m ready to try acid!” Fractal Cowboys are Quasar + Dylalien (Dylan Klarfield) from the US… Especially Quasar has impressed me with his distinct, wicked style… Check out the groovy, oddball intro that samples the psyched up theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly… The mood is set instantly! A heavily syncopated tune, going in a million directions – but still keeping its overall focus for the most part… This is the fastest track here, galloping away at an incredible 153 beats per minute – and for the most part it works wonders, though some parts are too damn hectic for my taste! It’s kinda like Finnish vodka-trance, though with a distinct San Francisco flavour… Good, but not really good… #09: Kulu vs. Strangers – Unbelievable [150 BPM] “There is no such thing as a hole or a portal into someone’s brain!” We head for Greece for the last track… Dimitris Kulukouriotis (Kulu) and Stefanos Gkogkakos (Strangers) are completely new artists to me – I’ve never heard anything from these guys before... But these guys are indeed skilled in the arts of dark, relentless psytrance! The intro is right back to spooky, eerie Halloween-trance and the track itself is dark, haunting, fast-paced Moscow-trance… The Being John Malkovich samples are funny and this track has enough acid-bits to entertain the night crawlers… Sadly though, this is also a little numb – it’s not overly original and pretty much everything here is something we’ve heard enough times before… But still - an ok track! This is without a doubt one of the most hard-core compilations out this year – maybe only equalled by Schlabbaduerst 007 and Mushy Mystery… So yeah, this is some seriously hard-hitting, jet-fuelled, ill disposed night-music designed to scare kids, animals and everyone older than 40! We get a bunch of really, really good tracks here – and there are no bad tracks per se… Just a few tracks which are less original than some of the others... Xenomorph mastered this – and he did well! I also really like the simple artwork by Androcell… It fits the music perfectly! I recommend this compilation to fans of such labels as Trishula, Temple Twisters, Yage, Parvati, Schlabbaduerst, Dropout Productions, etc – you will not be disappointed… It’s pretty damn good! And Halloween is just around the corner – this would make a great soundtrack… Enjoy!
