Phony Orphants – [it’cetra] Hi-res cover: front Artist: Phony Orphants (Denmark) Title: [it’cetra] Format: CD (jewel case/w six-page colour booklet) Label: Iboga Records (Denmark) Cat. #: IBOGACD32 Distribution: twohandsdistribution.com Date: 4 October 2005 Track listing: 01. 09’52” Rise 02. 06’37” Sex, Drugs.. 03. 07’38” I Want To Feel 04. 08’22” Got What It Takes 05. 07’50” Mi Corazon 06. 08’09” I’ll Promise You 07. 06’55” Going Down 08. 06’55” Party 09. 07’43” House For My Spouse Review: Shizzle dizzle progrezzle! This is the 32nd CD-release by Danish the Danish power-house label Iboga Records – and this time it’s none other than the second album by Phony Orphants – oh, happy day! P.O. is a Danish producer duo, consisting of Mikkel Dahlgaard (Emok) & Jeppe Ørnkilde and these guys have been progressive stars since the late 1990es… Their debut album Symphony is still regarded as one of the most important progressive trance releases of 2003, and the guys have released countless compilation tracks to much acclaim… After a couple of delays, the oddly named album is finally here… Let’s dig deeper… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Rise Time to rise up – get up – and start grooving! A majestic intro of gargantuan dimensions sets the mood – holy shit, we’re in for quite a ride it seems… Atmospheric, floating background pads alongside a naïve melody and a mean ol’ bassline lurking under the surface… And then BAM – @ 2’26 all hell brakes loose and we’re exposed to a crisp, lush, plush Son Kite’esque groove… And groove is the keyword here – this is more uplifting than your trusted morning wood… The perfect track to play when the first rays of light soak up the dancefloor in the morning… It has clubby parts for sure, but the phat rhythm section and the neat electro parts make sure we don’t cross over to club-trance completely… A brilliant, groovy track! #02: Sex, Drugs.. … And rock n’ roll!! Yeah, we crank the old trip-meter up a couple of notches and dig deeeeeep into rich, groovy and totally funky progressive trance… Sex, drugs and progressive trance drenched in the sweet reverb I like so much… Yeah, this is kinda FREq’qy – without getting close to plagiarism… This is oh-so-bouncy, and will work absolute wonders on the dancefloor… And with its distinct groove it’s perfect for home listening too… A corker! #03: I Want To Feel The intro here is pretty straight-forward with an old-school bouncing bassline… Pretty bleak actually, and not very funky… Slowly industrial FX are added alongside sharp, stretched-out melodic pads to ensure the balance is kept intact… The groove is relentless in all its chainsaw glory and the Nitzer Ebb-like vocals come as a total surprise… To be honest, I have somewhat of a problem with them… They seem oddly out of place – grotesque even! Yuck! Sad really, coz otherwise this is a pretty solid track – I just can’t seem to get past those vocals… #04: Got What It Takes This track was made by Emok on his own… And he got what it takes! Another progressive stomper with a slight electro/industrial feel to it… A long, building intro finally explodes in pure tribal-progressive mayhem after a couple of minutes… The sharp metallic hisses give this track its hard-hitting industrial edge … The rhythm section is simply impressive – throw in a couple of phat reverbs + a funky-ass-hell build-up/climax part and we’ve got a winner… A massive track! #05: Mi Corazon My heart belongs to… Hybrid trance? Ahh now this is trippy – this is the perfect blend of psytrance, house and progressive trance! Not since the second Tegma album 002:Avant.Garde have I heard such beautifully fused hybrid trance… This is the perfect mix of the before-mentioned styles… Progressive percussion, housy groovy and rich, trip-tastic psychedelic elementos - ¡Finalmente junto! Another class track! #06: I’ll Promise You The pace has quickened and the edges are more serrated now… Yeah, it’s definitely night now and we’re in bleaker, deeper territory… Rich progressive trance with a technoid twist! A marching rhythm section sets the pace and a couple of ethno voice samples are sprinkled about just to piss off the purists… There is also an acid-line bursting with life, bubbling somewhere in the background… Sweet track! #07: Going Down And now we’re going down… to ghoul town! Haunting, morphing sounds comprise the intro – trying their best to freak you out! And then… wait for it… A mean-ass, pounding, heavily filtered bassline alongside razor sharp acid-stabs and gritty percussion… Minimal without really being minimal – dark without really being dark…I like the loopy structure here – ‘tis very hypnotizing, but it’s also kinda monotonous and bleak… I could have wished for that little extra touch to spice this up… This is not a bad track at all; it’s just not as good as the rest of this sweet album… #08: Party Zombie… nation! …Oh wait, this is a different track! Yeah - now it’s party time… TekKno party! The intro starts in a repetitive mode where the previous track left off – but soon enough more layers are added and the boys engage in some serious knob-tweaking, synth-experimentation, and teKkno-bass-bopping! The heavily vocoded robotic voice doesn’t really do much for me, and to be honest I’d rather party to some of the previous tracks than this one… Again, this is far from being a bad track; it just pales a little in comparison to some of the others… #09: House For My Spouse On the last track we’re trying to find a house for the phony wives… As the first word of the title suggests, we’re in housier realms now… Gone are the grim, murky atmosphere from the previous three tracks, and we’re left with a down-right funky piece of filter-house… Reminds me of Superfunk or Kojak or something similar – though with a distinct Phony Orphants touch to it… Bebop-trumpets, house-groove, steel-drums and yeah-yeah vocals… Yeah yeah, we’re definitely experimenting now… The odd-ball track so to speak – it’s all pretty neat, but not exactly my cup of java… But it’s always fun to regain your strength with an experimental tune… ;o) This was quite a ride through the many corners of progressive trance… From epic, reverb-soaked progressive grooves, over deep, murky technoid night-time trance to fluffy, uplifting filter-house – in nine easy steps! Oh yeah – this is a cross-over as it gets – potent hybrid trance, beautifully executed by the Orphants…This is a really good album that works both as a journey and as individual tracks! There is not a single bad track here - though I didn’t really connect to a couple of the darker, repetitive tracks… But that’s nitpicking really; coz the quality level is damn high here! What’s also cool about this album is that it doubles as both quality home-entertainment and as a valuable DJ tool… And it sounds fabulous both on low volume, but more importantly also when the volume is cranked to the max… Cool! The cover art is stylish as always with Iboga, so you really get your money’s worth on this one! That’s right – Iboga continue to distance themselves as the world’s leading record label for progressive trance in its many forms… This is benchmark material and this album is a strong contender for best progressive album of the year. It’s right up there with the Tegma, Jaïa and Beat Bizarre albums… Fans of intelligent hybrid trance should not be without this gem… Enjoy! Oh yes, me too... Ultimae has yet to let me down with their benchmark quality releases... Looking forward to this one for sure... ;o) -
Yup, it's most likely the track Lumpi mentions... If it's not, the two remixes of Symphonix - Druids (Alexander Ligowski Remix + S.B.K. Remix) also has Arven speaking in Elvish at the Ford of Bruinen... /DP

Tri-Force – Entrance To Reality Hi-res: front Artist: Tri-Force (Japan) Title: Entrance To Reality Format: CD (jewel case) Label: ELF Music (Japan) Cat. #: DDCE-4009 Distribution: QQS/Wirikuta Date: 7 September 2005 Track listing: 01. 09’25” Layered Oscillation 02. 08’20” Aquasphere 03. 08’24” Trance Personal Waves 04. 08’56” Spectral Breeze 05. 08’23” Interstellar Harmonics 06. 08’59” Dream Circulation 07. 09’47” Longing / Love (Moondance Remix) 08. 11’16” Oncoming Oriental Transformers Review: Balearic, progressive neo trance… The Japanese label ELF Music has released some excellent material over the last year: The Phi album, the Hydro Generator album + the brilliant compilation After 10 Years Of Japanese Trance… All class CDs… And now, here’s the debut album from Tokoy-based Tri-Force - Sha-A (Yoshinori Saito)… My knowledge of this guy’s achievements is limited, but I do know that he had a clubby track on the compilation mentioned above… He also had a track on the 2003 Deja Vu Records compilation Zen, but I haven’t heard that one… Anyway, from what I can gather this guy’s style is somewhat less psytrancy than we’ve come to expect from ELF Music – I guess it’s time for some Japanese hybrid trance! Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Layered Oscillation Woow – this intro totally caught me by surprise… I was expecting fluffy, club-music – but what we get here is kinda distorted, filtered, clean experimental trance… Layered, minimal, distilled – and the wonderful melodies make sure it’s still uplifting… Oh yeah, this might have clubby elements, but as a whole this is pretty damn fine… Half-way through we’re treated to a progressive rhythm section too… That’s right, we go from minimal, over melodic to progressive trance – and back again! All in one track… Hybrid trance for sure – and nice hybrid trance too! #02: Aquasphere Again the intro is very anti-fluff here… Sounds like Ultimae chill complete with a didgeridoo and digital drops… After a couple of minutes a heavily filtered bassline is introduced alongside some synth-action… The high-pitched, dreamy melodies sneak their way in, creating a very harmonic, uplifting – yet somehow minimal track… Melodic trance with uncomplicated little twists and twirls – and with definite hints of progressive… It’s all very well-polished and nice, but I’m already starting too loose interest I’m afraid… #03: Trance Personal Waves “Give me one beat…Please ride those trance personal waves …Welcome to reality!” Finally some tempo! Yeah, we launch straight into a banging kick-drum on this one… This is still very much commercial trance, but the psy-link is becoming more evident now… Again, this is a hybrid of styles ranging from trance, psytrance, electro to progressive trance… Pretty banging and happening… Good, but not amazing… #04: Spectral Breeze Once again the psy-link is evident, and we’re close to crossing over into regular full-on here… Synth-flavoured electro bits and pieces are all over the place, as are nifty little, twirling melodies… Half-way through there’s a big, phat progressive rhythm section creating a pretty groovy atmosphere… Somewhere in between über-fluffy full-on and uplifting progressive trance… Not bad at all… #05: Interstellar Harmonics This track was already released on the 2004 ELF Music compilation After 10 Years Of Japanese Trance so I’m just gonna copy/paste my review from that one… This is a very harmonic, floating melodic track… Long, atmospheric, drifting pads with epic qualities… Kinda reminds me of the first 3-4 tracks of the 12 Moons album Solid State released by Candyflip in 2004… It would fit right in on an Ibiza-compilation… It’s kinda clubby, though with a distinct psy-trance edge… It’s nice and well-produced, but still a tad too well-polished for my taste… But then again, on this album it’s one of the better tracks! #06: Dream Circulation A murky intro here – somehow foreseeing what’s about to happen… Well, kinda! Drum experimentation, atmospheric pads, static hissing – and soon enough we’re in a strange, housy, progressive trance-hybrid of a track… Cool! Also the spiralling little synth-melodies are tasty! Twirling, acid-emulation… Neat! Sadly the track shifts back into well-polished, Balearic trance later… But the first half is cool and the second has its moments too… ;o) #07: Longing / Love (Moondance Remix) This track was originally composed by some dude called George Winston – and this is the Tri-Force remix… But yeah, this is more ecstatic, uplifting, joyous, commercial club-trance – with elements from psy both sound-wise and structure-wise… Loads of cheesy stuff here – someone honk the cheddar alarm! The Robert Miles-like dreamy outro is kinda cool, but it goes on forever… Overkill! #08: Oncoming Oriental Transformers Again this is pretty standard, club-trance with psy’ish elements… But this one is actually less fluffy and has more bangin’ parts! It breaks down nice with spacy stabs and then builds up again – a real commercial crowd-pleaser… Crowd-pleasing is not bad per se, this is just too Ibiza for me… Decent track! Well, forget about psychedelia on this one… Or rather, think cross-over trance! No matter how you twist and turn it; this *is* commercial club-trance in essence… On the plus side, Tri-Force never pretended to be psy-trance – he just borrows elements from psytrance and progressive trance… Sadly borrowing alone doesn’t always cut it – and coming from a psytrance background I’m not overly impressed by this album… It’s all very, very well-produced and it’s uplifting as fuck… Unfortunately, that’s not what my doctor ordered! But, we do get some very distinct influences from both psy-trance, minimal and progressive trance here – and that’s what makes this album stand out from just-another-commercial-trance-release… After all it is released on ELF Music and it sure has its moments – but I’m afraid those really awesome moments are just too scarce for my taste! As mentioned before, this crosses well over into commercial trance realms, so fans of clubby hybrid trance will have a field-day with this one… Enjoy! Space Tribe – Thru The Looking Glass Hi-res: front + back Artist: Space Tribe (Australia) Title: Thru The Looking Glass Format: CD (digipack) Label: Space Tribe Music (Australia) + Solstice (Japan) Cat. #: STM003 Distribution: Arabesque + Solstice (Japan) Date: 12 August 2005 Track listing: 01. 08’41” Space Tribe - R U Normal 02. 07’45” Space Tribe - A Pinch Of Psychedelic (Remix) 03. 07’07” Space Tribe - Thru The Looking Glass 04. 07’06” Space Tribe & Psywalker – Space Case 05. 09’24” Space Tribe & Absolum - Astral Body Surfing 06. 07’51” Space Tribe - Unspeakable 07. 08’12” Space Tribe - Digital Or Analogue 08. 07’38” Space Tribe - Space Is Stretching 09. 08’07” Space Tribe - Bali .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/7g4m5 (all tracks!) Review: Follow the white rabbit! Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There is a work of children's literature by Lewis Carroll written in 1871. It is the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, (although it makes no reference to its events). In it, there are many mirror themes, including opposites, time running backwards, and so on. And it’s also the name of the new Space Tribe album! This is the 10th album by the wizard of Oz: Olli Wisdom – a renowned shaman, DJ, musician and global traveller… He also owns the label Space Tribe Music, in which this album is the 3rd release… The last Space Tribe instalment Collaborations was pretty good for a full-on release, and I’m hoping this one will be too… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Space Tribe - R U Normal [140 BPM] “Everybody is trying to in their own, individual way, that’s what makes us individuals. We like this, we don’t like that! Well, what is normal? Nobody is normal! Some people try to fit into a box that is made, somehow, in their head, but they don’t actually fit it, they just try to fit it anyway. Nothing is normal. No one is normal. There is no normal!” In keeping up the old Space Tribe tradition, we start with a lengthy, spiritual sample before the track really kicks off… When it does, we’re in the middle of uplifting, dancefloor friendly, futuristic full-on… Well, maybe nothing is normal in an intellectual sense, but believe me – everything is normal in the Space Tribe sense here… This track could just as well have been on a late 1990es S.T. album… Yeah, this is timeless full-on with twirling, fluffy melodies and tons and tons of samples… The climax is also pretty cool, though I could have wished for an extended build-up part… Ahh well, still a pretty nice and cosy track! #02: Space Tribe - A Pinch Of Psychedelic (Remix) [142 BPM] “I believe that both mind, thoughts and matter are made of the same thing; basically super string! And if they're made of the same thing, then what you think has an effect on the physical universe, and you can change it!” This is a remix to the original track which was on the aptly named Space Tribe Music compilation A Pinch Of Psychedelic released earlier this year… I really, really detest the intro with the Scooter-like cheering live-audience… That sucks beyond words! But luckily it’s only for a brief moment – and the track itself kicks ass! Oh yeah, this is Olli at his best: Twirling, flaring, trippy acid-lines mixed with uplifting melodies, subtle bass drums and the ever-present voice-samples… Yeah – we’re not re-inventing the wheel here, but this formula works for me… Except for the intro, this is a very nice track! #03: Space Tribe - Thru The Looking Glass [146 BPM] “What a peculiar place to have a party! … You may notice that I’m not all there myself!” Alice kicks things into gear and the pace is now increased for the title track… Oh yes, this is full-blown party-music… I really like the driving force of this track – the build-ups are longer and the old-school samples are really, really trippy… Oh yes, this is a classic Space Tribe dancefloor bombshell if there ever was one… Formulaic yes, but this formula has worked wonders for years… One of the best tracks here! #04: Space Tribe & Psywalker – Space Case [146 BPM] “They play music and meditate… And wait patiently for UFOs to appear!” This collaboration track between Ollie Wisdom and Luke Psywalker was previously released on the Digital Psionics compilation Psionic Circus… I really liked the collaborations on Psionic Storm and on the Space Tribe Collaborations album… Again we get Olli’s light, fluffy, melodic full-on mated with the harder, wicked input from Psywalker – a well-tested formula that works! Twisted, futuristic full-on… And whenever Ollie is about to get too fluffy, Luke saves the day… Another nice track, I just wish it wasn’t already released… Filler! #05: Space Tribe & Absolum - Astral Body Surfing [146 BPM] “Drugs do make people irrational, ok? Drugs make, people irrational – trust me, ok? Drugs do make people irrational! Especially those people who don’t take ‘em!” We all know that Olli likes to collaborate with other producers… He’s got a full album + plenty of tracks to prove that… So here’s another one… This time Olli is in cahoots with French producer Christof Drouillet who’s released some really cool stuff in the past… Anyway, this track kinda stands out here – as Drouillet’s input is notably different from Olli’s… The bassline is hollow and the overall atmosphere is pretty bleak for the first couple of minutes… Down-right boring actually! But, fear not – it gets much better as the track progresses… However I still have some problems with large portions of this track… It’s too hollow somehow and that’s sad coz there are also some really, really cool parts…Especially the last two minutes… But as a whole, it falls thru! #06: Space Tribe – Unspeakable [148 BPM] “So much of our experience is intangible. So much of what we perceive can not be expressed. It’s unspeakable!” And now for the fastest track here… Full-on in structure – just like you’d expect… But this one is a little faster, a little harder and a little more predictable I’m afraid… “Every moment is magical!” – I wish! The last part of this track is pretty cool in all its acid-ridden glory, but the first part is too boring… #07: Space Tribe - Digital Or Analogue [146 BPM] The question that has been haunting mankind since the beginning of time… Digital or analogue? I guess this track is both – which is cool! Yeah, I like this track much better than the previous one… This one is full-power, no-questions-asked, neo-futuristic, melodic full-on drenched in acid… Pretty simple really, but it works like a charm! A sweet, dancefloor-friendly, party-track! #08: Space Tribe - Space Is Stretching [145 BPM] “Space is stretching!” Electro/piano intro here… Kinda not what we’re used to from Ollie – nice! Anyway, before you know it the track takes a more familiar direction… Full-on with some serious knob-tweaking and tons of trippy samples… Check out the cool break-down that comes after 4-minutes… Very anti Space Tribe and very off-key… It’s cool and adds some flavour to the track! Nice, but still not the best track here… #09: Space Tribe – Bali [145 BPM] “How much knowledge can a human mind stand before it freaks out?” Yeah – that’s a damn good question! We’re in Bali now, and I’d like to think that this track has a little of that Balinese tribal touch to it… It’s still very much digital full-on, but with a pinch of ethno-tribal to it… Tons of acid, loads of digital twirls and analogue whirls… Oh, and I think the next kick is going to be electronic brain stimulation… Trust me on this one! ;o) A nice, melodic piece here – pretty soft, but still with some edge… A decent way to end this album for sure… As you might know, I’m not the biggest fan of full-on out there… I’ve often bashed formulated, neo-full on for being so fucking predictable and boring… In keeping with that notion, I cannot claim that this album is 100% innovative and unique… It’s not! But – this is good old Space Tribe we’re taking about! Olli’s music has always had a special place in my heart, and especially his older albums are all pretty damn cool… I’m happy to say that Olli hasn’t lost his touch over the years… Sure, he’s not exactly re-inventing the wheel here – and often his stuff verges on the edge of cheddar-fluff… But still, his take on neo-full is sooooo much better than most of the stuff coming out of Israel nowadays… Trust me! I wish the cool track vs. cheesy track ratio was higher, but I guess that’s an utopian thought… The cover-art though, is cool on this one: Lewis Carroll-themed all the way with Alice, the Mad Hatter & the White Rabbit… Also the DJ slip will come in handy for DJs! So – if you like Space Tribe and Aussie psytrance in general, you should check this album out… You pretty much know what to expect - satisfaction in recognition... Purists, shroom-heads and progressive trancers should probably look elsewhere! Enjoy!
