    V/A - Hunters

V/A - Hunters Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Various Title: Hunters Format: CD (digipack) Label: Red Cells Records (France) Cat. #: REDCR 001 Distribution: Trance Shop Date: June 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’40” Silicon Sound - Modulate 02. 07’14” Chromatone - Automagic 03. 07’05” Artifakt - Razor 04. 08’13” Phyx – Ghost Blade 05. 07’11” Triskell - Tensegrity 06. 08’52” Phatmatix vs. Audiobrains – Sonic Machine (S.Scape Edit) 07. 08’09” Digital Talk – Mathematrix (Cryptic Edit) 08. 08’41” Phatmatix – Back To Earth 09. 06’24” Blue Planet Corporation – Groove On The Moon Review: Full-power hyper-trance w/soft edges… Red Cells Records is a new label from Paris, France. It’s run by DJ Ananda who was formerly a part of Turbo Trance and Mechanic Sound Records. According to the promotional text what we can expect from this debut compilation is ‘twisted leads, emotional and crunchy melodies, deep and dark atmospheres with strong rolling rhythm and phat beat’… Right, that’s promo-talk if I ever saw promo-talk… But the tracklist does look impressive, so why don’t we find out for ourselves… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Silicon Sound – Modulate [138 BPM] As the BPM-indicator reveals we kick things off with a softer track – just to get you in the mood. Johannes Regnier from France has seldom let me down with his softy, uplifting morning trance… This is not re-inventing the wheel – not by a long shot. But it does what it’s supposed to do – it’s uplifting, joyous, fluffy morning trance with distinct progressive influences… Pretty nice, but surely not the best track on this compilation… #02: Chromatone – Automagic [145 BPM] Next up is a track by the American producer and mastering expert Lawrence Hoffman – despite his tracks being on loads of compilations recently, this is my first encounter with his own music… Anyway, the pace has quickened now, and this is full-blown party music to be played at night… Rolling synth lines, bubbling acid-bits and melodic pads – with a pumping bassline somewhere in the back… I really like the breaks here – they spice things up… This sounds really well-produced – Mr. Hoffman’s studio experience doesn’t go unnoticed - but somehow it also sounds a little hollow to me… I dunno it just seems like we’ve heard this a billion times before… It’s a familiar flavour – it even tastes good… But something’s missing… #03: Artifakt – Razor [144 BPM] Artifakt is Matthew De Nobrega from South Africa… A Time Code/Mushroom Mafia/Afrogalactic regular…The party-vibe is still pumping and this is much more to my liking – the edges are harder now and this reminds me of Xatrik and to some extend also Rinkadink… Yeah – this track is dope! Constantly evolving, changing direction and generally this track keeps surprising me in a good way… I mean, just listen to the build-up here – so fresh, so trance-inducing, so fucking great… Brilliant track! #04: Phyx – Ghost Blade [144 BPM] Ahh – good old Phyx! Ian Summs moved from South Africa to the UK (I guess!?) and pretty much everything I’ve heard from him has been great… This is a darkish, guitar-driven night time track… To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the guitars like this – if Skazi did one thing, it was ruining that for me… Luckily Phyx doesn’t overuse the guitar, and the rest of the track is pretty decent too… I like the eerie, razor-sharp stabbing sounds – and the kick-ass full-on part that starts @ 3’47… Effective stuff for sure! I just wish those damn digital guitars weren’t there… #05: Triskell – Tensegrity [145 BPM] “Everything we’ve done is forgiven…Everything!” I’ve only heard a couple of tracks from French-based producer Fred Sauvand – and they didn’t really do much for me… This is spacy night time music – with distinct electro parts and a disturbingly bland bassline… It’s like Sauvand is trying a little too hard sometimes – which causes a bit of a mishmash of confusion… This track is pretty decent, without being amazing… #06: Phatmatix vs. Audiobrains – Sonic Machine (S.Scape Edit) [145 BPM] Next up is a collaboration between Phatmatix (Stephane Rault) and Audiobrains (Simon Ly) from France… Both have released compilation tracks, but again I’ve been missing out… The intro is really cool here… Distant humming/classical music – whatever it is, it sure sets the darker mood which is present throughout this track… Yeah, this is spooky stuff… Full on like The Misted Muppet, acid-driven like Yum-Yab and evil as Kemic-Al… Check out what goes on in the background – you’ll be amazed what you find if you poke around a bit… Also the Sanskrit chanting is way cool – reminds me of ancient Shiva Sidpao… Yeah - this track has it all… I like this loads – it’s close to perfection! #07: Digital Talk – Mathematrix (Cryptic Edit) [147 BPM] Who else than Digital Talk to follow such a track… Julien Fougea & Luc Achintre from France released their spooky album New Age Surf on Acidance back in early 2004 – and since then I’ve only heard one track from them… Anyway, they’re back – and this is one mean-ass motherfucker of a track… The fastest here – and intense as hell! Yeah – their Halloween trance heritage does not go unnoticed… I’m digging the hardcore acid-lines and the many twirls and tweaks… Great stuff – should be played during the darkest hours of the night…. #08: Phatmatix – Back To Earth [145 BPM] Stephane Rault from France is back with a solo-track…Nice! The intro is sleek with clever voice samples about intuitive disco… The rest of the track is just as good – tons and tons of layers and constant evolution…Hard-hitting and extremely psychedelic… Dark to the core – and very dancefloor friendly… Yeah – this is a nice track for sure! #09: Blue Planet Corporation – Groove On The Moon [132 BPM] We started soft – and we end even softer… What we get here is a downbeat morning tune by the living legend Gabriel Masurel from France… I really like this guys comeback – the stuff coming out of his studio recently is as originals as it is good… This is subtle, floating, melodic downbeat – of ambient proportions …So relaxed, yet so groovy… … Fucking aye – we’re grooving on the moon now… BPC style! What a beautiful track – and what a great way to end this compilation! The first and the last track alone are enough reason *not* to label this as your average hyper-trance compilation… It’s not! There are a lot of good tracks here + a couple of tracks that doesn’t really do it for me… But the vast variation within a dancefloor friendly framework makes up for that… I guess what I’m trying to say is, that this is a solid compilation… I like how we get a mix of different styles here – from uplifting morning trance w/proggy roots and melodic, floating downbeat – to acid-ridden, full-power, nocturnal hyper-trance… That’s a great mix for the most part! Also let me take a minute to comment on the very classy artwork here… Alaska from France sure knows his graphix and this is absolutely stunning… Well done! Yeah, Red Cells Records has pretty much hit the spot here… With only a couple of less good tracks, I like everything about this compilation… Already I’m looking forward to the next one compiled by DJ Saykoyan called Ultim Atom… Bring it on! This compilation is recommended for fans of full-power, nocturnal hyper-trance and intelligent dance music in general… Enjoy! 4. I am serious dammit! I publish my reviews on Psynews, Isratrance, Psyforum.co.uk, SonicBlend, Par-2, Sonic-Energy, Discogs and occasionally on Trance.net... But hey, I'll check out trancecritic and see if it's anything for me... Can you run the "review rules" by me real quick Cinos? Can I add stuff by myself - do I have to follow a certain format? Thanks - but I sure hope it's not going to waste... A lot of people read my stuff on the pages mentioned above... ;o) /DP

  7. Frechbax - Frech Hi-res cover: front + back Artist: Frechbax (Germany) Title: Frech Format: CD (jewel case) Label: Ajana Records (Germany) Cat. #: AJACD002 Distribution: Arabesque Date: 1 August 2005 Track listing: 01. 07’37” Schall Und Rausch 02. 07’39” Ahoi 03. 07’29” Micromini 04. 06’44” Lollipop 05. 06’23” Schraube Rmx 06. 08’14” Fuck 07. 08’01” L.S.D. 08. 07’44” The Rising Sun 09. 07’46” Suendenboch .m3u-playlist: http://tinyurl.com/aev5m (all tracks!) Review: Glatte, tiefe progressive Trance - Sehr intelligent produziert! Ajana Records is the newly established sublabel of Germany’s hard-hitting Trishula Records. The first release was the compilation A Magical Journey released in June of 2005 – and what a great debut that was… Showcasing some sweet, sweet downbeat tunes from around the world. On this second release the focus is on Frechbax - a progressive trance outfit of one Sebastian Auer from Germany. I’ve never heard any of his stuff before, so I have no expectations whatsoever… But according to the promotional material Seb spend more than one year of studio-time preparing this CD – so let’s find out what all that time went into… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Schall Und Rausch We kick things right off with some sound and intoxication… Yeah, that’s one of my fav’e combos, so why not!? This is über-chilled, laidback progressive downbeat – kinda dubby, but then again not really… I like the sampled horns/sirens/whatever that sounds like they are sampled straight outta LOTR… They work perfectly in conjunction with the percussion here… And the sweet little melodies really top it off… This is a tour de force in progressive rhythm… Beautifully executed! #02: Ahoi We move into eerie downbeat territory here… Check out the spooky voice-bit in the intro… Holy smokes, what is that? Soon we’re treated to a sweet, sweet reverb FX alongside the phat, lazy bass… Oh yes, this sounds great – it’s progressive but still very laidback – and spooky at the same time… What I’m trying to say is that the atmosphere in this track sounds very unique to me – bedazzling even! Nice track! #03: Micromini Now that must be really, really small? The organic, watery intro sports more atmospheric, realistic sound-wizardry… Really, this sounds so fucking great in headphones… Again the rhythm section is very, very original here – and although this sounds kinda minimal I bet there are many layers at play… I’m especially taken by the first half of this track – there seems to be a short period of stand-still towards the middle here – but luckily it picks up again for the last part… Another fine track! #04: Lollipop Suck on my lollipop – bitch! The sirens from #1 are back… But this time the pace has quickened and we’re in full-blown progressive territory now… Oh yes, this is omnipotent dancefloor material… Deeeeeeeep, progressive trance – beautifully balanced by a feather-like melody and another rich rhythm section… Despite the many elements, this still has a minimal quality to it… And quality is the keyword here – this is fucking awesome! #05: Schraube Rmx The screw remix! Yeah, this is a remix to an older Frechbax track released on a CD-R in 2003… Haven’t heard the original, so I can’t really tell what was changed for this remix… What I can tell you however is that this is more full-blown dancefloor material… Rich progressive trance with trippy little melodies – all within a basic, minimal framework… This is good, but Lollipop was better… But the quality level on this album is very high – so the competition is fierce. The first part of this track is a little bland – but after the breakdown with the voice sample things start to pick up… I just wish the entire track was like that… Still a nice track though! #06: Fuck Despite the weird track name, this is actually pretty good… Holy shit – just check out the intro! A spooky moaning thing is going on here – reminiscent of the girl in The Blair With Project… ‘We’re gonna die out here!’ … Anyway, this is also dancefloor friendly, minimal progressive trance – with a spooky atmosphere… I didn’t even know that minimal, progressive horror-trance was a genre – but after listening to this, I can tell you it is… Dieses ist gespenstisch! Fuck! #07: L.S.D. “We were somewhere around Barstow when the drugs began to take hold! … They gave me the LSD & they took me to the hotel, I don't know what they've done to me but I remember it was horrible. They gave you what? LSD, LSD, LSD!“ Bleh! – The bassline here seems oddly out of place here… And so does the samples from Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas… I mean – come on, how many times have we heard them already? The annoying thing is, that underneath the bland bassline and the voice samples this is a pretty decent track… All this just kinda ruins it for me… #08: The Rising Sun And here we have a Hymne zur steigenden Sonne… Yeah, this is progressive morning trance… A little more uplifting than some of the previous track – but still very much Frechbax! The electro-intro sounds pretty cool to me – so does the tribal drums… Yeah, I can vividly imagine this being played on the dancefloor when the sun rises… It’s good stuff, but not as good as some of the previous tracks – also the last couple of minutes are a little boring… #09: Suendenboch I have no idea what a ‘boch’ is, but ‘suended’ translates into ‘sins’… Anyway, this is more progressive morning trance… The intro revolves around tribal drums and cool Klaus Kinski voice samples… I really, really dig the percussion here… It sounds so simple, but yet so intoxicating and trance-inducing even… Yeah – this is some good shit! A tribal-dance-your-ass-off dancefloor bombshell - bounce motherfuckers! Frech is German for ‘impudently’ which means something or someone that is characterized by offensive boldness; insolent or impertinent – basically; arrogance or being audaciously rude… But nothing can be further from the truth – I perceive this album as very warm, very welcoming and very mature… It’s a complex really coz some of these tracks are kinda minimal and introverted – but still so damn rich and intoxicating… Also the production sounds absolutely stunning here – Tim Schuldt in 4CN Studios sure knows his shit… Yeah, I’m very impressed by this debut album – nice going Frechbax! With the exception of the L.S.D. track I all the tracks here… The cover-art sucks though, but don’t be fooled by its bleak appearance. This is a very good album! Mr. Auer has found his very own, deeply unique sound and I always embrace that in a scene where plagiarism often prevails… I will not hesitate to give this album my warmest recommendations – fans of intelligent, border-seeking progressive trance must check this out… It’s brilliant! Don’t forget the head-phones for this one - Enjoy! Favourites: 1, 2, 3, 4(!), 6, 9(!) 17. V/A - Levitation Artist: Various Title: Levitation Format: CD (digipack) Label: Candyflip Records (Greece) Cat. #: CFCD015 Distribution: Arabesque Date: June 2005 Track listing: 01. 06’40” Neo Logic – Milky Way 02. 09’06” Parrket – Through The Never 03. 08’47” Motion & Side A - Ascender 04. 08’13” Flame On Fire – Shape Audition 05. 07’59” Ryan Halifax – The Test 06. 08’43” Flame On Fire – The First Ride Of The Dragon 07. 07’49” Wizzy Noise – Time Line (Vibrasphere Rmx) 08. 08’28” 12 Moons – The Collective 09. 09’18” Blue Planet Corporation – Alidade (Wizzy Noise Rmx) Review: Progressive morning choons – Candyflip style! Candyflip Records from Greece is out with their 15th release – and the third compilation… This time it’s a ‘morning psy progressive compilation’ featuring a handful of well-known artists + a couple of tracks from a newbie… What strikes me as kinda odd when looking at the tracklist, is the inclusion of three tracks that were already released!? … Ah well, they are all good tracks, so let’s hope the new stuff is just as good… Let me take you thru the tracks… #01: Neo Logic – Milky Way Neo Logic is Echotek and Safi Connection in cahoots… This track was already released on the 2004 album Groove Logic. There is a slow, almost dubby intro here… Relaxed female voice telling us about the cosmos… That continues thought-out this groovy and deeply funky number… Much work has gone into the percussion work, creating a very smooth, almost sexy, beach house sound… Great stuff… Nice intro track! #02: Parrket – Through The Never Mladen Glavinic from Croatia has already released tracks on Tribal Vision, YSE, Dark Life Records and Pukka Music – but this is my first encounter with his music… This is NOT a tribute to Metallica – this is smooth, suave progressive trance… Laid-back – but deep enough to dance to… I like the tribal percussion here – very intoxicating and head bob-friendly… Nice little track! #03: Motion & Side A – Ascender Motion is Vincent Courcot from France – better known as Tetraktys… Side A is Olivier Cambier also from France. They first collaborated on the Tatsu Recordings compilation Ground Grooves released in 2004… And now here! I’ve heard a couple of single Side A tracks on Groove Zone compilations and to be honest those tracks didn’t really do it for me… But hey – once Cambier is joined by Tetraktys things start to shape up… This is a funky little progressive number – with a very distinct, feather-light melody… I dig it! I also like how this track is in constant progression – unlike some of Side A’s solo tracks… Yeah – this is groovy! #04: Flame On Fire – Shape Audition F.O.F. is Tasos Dimomeletis from Greece … He’s got an upcoming album on Candyflip Records and this is his debut… We get more smooth, progressive trance here – orchestral at times, and melodic for the most part… Yeah, this is some funky shit – I dig the siren-like sound used thought-out the track – I can’t wait to hear that on the dancefloor… All in all a very impressive debut here! Sweet track! #05: Ryan Halifax – The Test Alexander Schaumann from Germany should need no further introduction… I was really impressed with the track he did with Marc Vision on the Back To The Future compilation released on Groove Zone earlier this year. I also enjoyed his track on the Plusquam compilation Wireless released earlier this year – what a mean ass bouncing motherfucker that was… And yeah – this is more bounce… Halifax really has some sleek production skills – and he manages to squeeze everything possible out of this uplifting tune… Deeply progressive, highly danceable… I like how he plays around with electro-bits – oh, and of course I dig the reverb FX… A very nice track! #06: Flame On Fire – The First Ride Of The Dragon “We’re riding the dragon!” Here’s the second track from Mr. Dimomeletis – and again the n00b impresses me… The track starts with a lengthy sample in French – about dragons I presume… After a while the track takes on a more danceable appearance – uplifting progressive trance with distinct melodic influences…The melodic lead here is indeed cool! A track with some very interesting ideas – unfortunately it suffers from stand-still syndrome a couple of times especially in the first half… But that does not ruin the impression of an otherwise nice track… Bring on the debut album! #07: Wizzy Noise – Time Line (Vibrasphere Rmx) More recycling here – this track was featured on the Wizzy Noise Time Line Remixes CDM released last year – and this remix was definitely the best one. From the first second you just know its Vibrasphere… Their trademark progressive Scandinavian sound is present through-out this track… Rickard & Robert have found their niche, and damn, I hope they never stray from that coz this is so damn good! So clear, so crisp, so delicious! Sounds like a cookie, huh? Well, I’ll have a whole plate! And hey, nothing it wrong with your hearing! Amazing track! #08: 12 Moons – The Collective And we continue with more recycling here… This is one of the best tracks of the 12 Moons album Solid State released in 2004. Very simple, but very atmospheric intro… The basis is just two synth cords… The groovy bassline is accompanied by some distant human choir… The Ibiza-touch is very much present, but as long as it’s accompanied by some deep, progressive beats and a touch of psy I’m happy… And that extra touch comes through clever use of hi-hats and nifty little acid-twirls… Sweet track! #09: Blue Planet Corporation – Alidade (Wizzy Noise Rmx) Alidade was first featured on the 1999 B.P.C. album Blue Planet released by legendary Flying Rhino… A true timeless, uplifting classic – so the Wizzy boys have something to live up to when messing with the classics… Well, the boys have given this is facelift – not a complete makeover, as the most recognisable parts of the original are still intact… I’m talking about the melodic lead of course! …It’s still pretty uplifting, melodic trance – with the odd Wizzy twist here and there… To be brutally honest I like the original better than this – but there’s a nice homey feeling to this track that I really like… Not bad! First and foremost: I’m generally against labels re-issuing tracks… I mean, there is so much good music out there, why release the same stuff twice? That being said, when recycling is done with such good tracks as these, I can’t really complain… Both the recycled tracks + the new tracks are all good… There are no bad tracks here, and that’s pretty rare for a compilation… Obviously this compilation consists mainly of progressive tracks – with a couple of uplifting, melodic pieces thrown in the heighten enjoyment… And enjoyment is exactly what I’m getting from this compilation. It’s pretty damn good! The liner notes lists 2004 as release year which is obviously wrong… That and the recycling are the only flaws I can find here – everything else is sweet… Fans of smooth, progressive trance with a hint of morning should definitely check this out… It’s well worth it!
