Are any of their (James) releases worth looking for?
-
Let us all blame file sharing! Because it can't be visionless label management can it... This thread is just going to explode.

My biggest disappointment was Unusual Suspects 2. The tracklist looked so good but only a few tunes actually managed to get my attention. The second biggest disappintment is an album I praised a lot after the first listen, namely Shpongle's Nothing Lasts. I was blown away the first time I heard it but it just didn't last. I've been trying to like it so many times since then, but I just can't. There's tons of great sounds and twists, but it faded away so fast. I guess that the actual biggest disappointment in 2005 was Twisted Records.

I'm refering to the first Penta album, and just like you I was disappointed by the second one. I didn't get the album until I listened carefully to Wishful Sinful and then I was really impressed. It made me quit whatever I was doing and lay down on my bed and listen to the album from start, and I was just blown away, long time since that happened. You really have to listen to the songs from the beginning to get into the right mood, and the quality of the samples obviously won't give you the full experience. If you have a good surround setup at home this album is very rewarding. It might have been me praising Wishful Sinful, and thing is with most songs on this album: you have to listen to them from start to finish, no skipping or sampling, because there's lots of storytelling going on, and Wishful Sinful is afterall 12 minutes long. Just wait till you get it and can listen to it in it's full glory!

Yes, there are too many labels and a lot of them release the same stuff, but to claim they all represent one sound you either have to be be deaf, ignorant or a conservative goa dork. Digital Structures Horns and Hoofs Acidance Tribal Vision Liquid Sound Design Boshke Beats Hommega Sundance Parvati Flow Spun Aleph Zero Iboga Timecode Interchill Twisted Oxygen Case closed.

Witchcraft was released on Matsuri Productions (UK) in 1998 and prior to that Sandman had releases on Symbiosis (1996) and TIP (1997), both well known UK based psy-trance labels. There are however connections between trance and industrial, so that might not be too strange. Listen to Slide's Unstable, UX' Ultimate Experience, anything by Kris Kylven, some Psy-Harmonics releases etc, all labelled as psy-trance but the industrial edge is certainly there.

No, different thing. The mixes are made out of tunes that have already been put through a screening process (i.e. being released by a label) while the "check out my tracks" forum is work in progress. The first is mainly uploading for promotion and some feedback while the later is mainly uploading for feedback and some promotion.

Mixes in general, please!

Darshan - Awakening Delta - Scizoeffective Slide - Unstable V/A - Black Rhino Because if it was released 6 years ago it would surely be released on Atomic.

That's a good point. But is it a valid and fair comparsion? If you look at the total output and weigh the good releases against the bad then the relative number will of course be very low. If you then proceed to compare the relative number to the relative number of any year during the golden era then any year since 1999 will be total and utter crap. Therefore I think it's an invalid and unfair comparsion. If you how ever look at the absolute number of above average releases you get a better sense of how good a year 2005 actually was. I don't care about the crap releases I want the good stuff, and as far as the good stuff is conserned I think it has been a very good year. I was able to list 18 releases that I found to be above average and it's been a very long time since that happened, and I'm sure there's even more releases that I'm unaware of. Based on my view 18 above average releases corresponds to 1½ releases per month, and that's not a crap year in my opinion.

Is this for real? Please, tell me it's a joke.

A lot of things can be said about Ticon, but they certainly have their own sound, unlike some other swedish prog acts that seem to whorship Son Kite a bit too much. Still I find it very hard to appreciate their current epic cheesy electro-house sound, not my cup of tea, and not very psychedelic. I enjoyed Ticon until the first album, since then it's been a high quality ride, downhill.

I'm extremely impressed by it. It's one of the very best dark albums I've heard, including the classics of the golden era. Wishfun Sinful is an amazing track, probably the most impressive I've heard since Delta's The Thing. Psykovsky has renewed my faith in this scene, weird and psychedelic music can still be made. Maybe I should add that I'm not a fan of the current wave of dark music, I find it to be unpsychedelic and uninspired noise most of the time (noteable exceptions are Scatterbrain, Ocelot and Penta). Psykovskys album on the other hand is very psychedelic and demented. I love it, and I'm pretty sure it will be the album of the year for me.

Of course, but one thing doesn't have to exclude the other.

Goa, neo full on, progressive psy-trance and minimal psy-trance are all quite different styles of psychedelic trance. If you walk into a music store and tell them you want psy-trance or just music, you will most likely end up with something you don't like. If you can narrow down the odds by saying you're looking for some well polished progressive psy-trance chances are you'll get exactly what you're looking for. If the only genre was music you would never ever get the specific style of music you're looking for, or imagine describing the style of every type of music you're looking for: - It's four to the floor, with an off beat bassline, some dreamy pads, evolving percussion and some long breaks would also be nice. It's a bit easier to say you're looking for progressive psy-trance, right?

He's been involved in some good collaborations (mostly with Posford), but as far as stand alone production is conserned I've never heard anything made by him that was above average. Any suggestions? I guess his importance is as the label manger of Dragonfly and as a producer? Any other offers? While on the subject of Youth and collaborations, who is the third member of Celtic Cross, S. Davies? Is it an actual person or a pseudonym?
