My attempt at mixing DnB with acid/psy elements
karan129 replied to karan129's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Wow, thanks for that in-depth reply. It really helps me understand where I'm going wrong. You're right, sometimes I keep loops in for my personal satisfaction even it they detract from the track. I've made some adjustments to the track and reworked the middle section so it gets more interesting. I didn't change the 1:30 part because I just liked the irregular 3x4 beat better, it feels different and weird in a psy kind of way. I'll keep working on it -
My attempt at mixing DnB with acid/psy elements
karan129 replied to karan129's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
ACIDStep no-one? IMO the track does have its moments, at the least it isn't bad. -
I really liked the Printer Jam track. Very innovative! The broken bass and beats get familiar after a while so its really great to hear such a fresh track. Its like the DnB equivalent of Teleport. Both full of little details that come out slowly with repeat listens.

So what are your fav SF books? I love books that are magnificent in their scope and combine SF with philosophical (eg. Dune) or sociological (eg. Foundation) concerns etc... Here are my faves in order Frank Herbert - Dune The greatest piece of science fiction written, if just edging the Mars Trilogy for the honour. Astounding in its scope, spanning thousands of years, across star systems and galaxies, countless worlds and their denizens. And ofcourse the magical world of Arrakis. Parts or the book are almost metaphysical with the characters reflecting and introspecting, for example, the Bene Gesserit viewpoint on history showing how subtle touches can affect the future. The followups by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson are worth reading, they don't resemble the original series as far as the philosophy goes, but they are absolute thrillers and page turners. These book do well to explain the genesis of the many factions you will meet in Dune, while remaining books in their own right. IMO this series blurs the boundary between science fiction and fantasy, I consider it to be a blend of both. Kim Stanley Robinson - Mars Trilogy The Mars Trilogy consists of three books - Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars, the titles reflecting the changing face of Mars as it is terraformed. This series is absolutely breathtaking, not simply as a science function but because of the author's literary style and the literary devices he employs to bring alive the beauty of an alien planet which none of us have seen. Take Sax and Maya trying to put names to the myriad hues of the Martian skies and find themselves lacking because of the sheer variety of colours. "And after that they had a little hobby. Really it was remarkable how varied the colors of the Odessa sunsets were......So most evenings they held up their forearms, and tried different colors against the sky, and found a patch that matched fairly well, and it was a nondescript; no name. They made up names: 2 October the llth Orange, Aphelion Purple, Lemon Leaf, Almost Green, Arkady’s Beard; Maya could go on forever, she was really good at it.......Maya seized his arm in her clawlike grip, “That’s Martian orange, look, that’s the color of the planet from space, what we saw from the Aresl Look! Quick, what color is that, what color is that?”.......Cinnamon, raw sienna, Persian orange, sunburn, camel, rust brown, Sahara, chrome orange ...... they began to laugh. Nothing was quite right. “We’ll call it Martian orange,” Maya decided." Leave all that aside, and this book is still amazing...why? Read it and you will understand what humanity can achieve if we look beyond, to the stars. Issac Asimov - Foundation Known the science fiction fans all over the globe, inventor of the three famous laws of robotics, I think the Foundations series is Asimov's best known work. I have yet to read everything he has written, but this stands head and shoulders above the stuff I have. It follows the use of a new science called psychohistory, a marriage of psychology and history, to change the future. What will we become? And in the end, you too must choose. The Empire disintegrates. Humanity is on the verge of regression. Yet there is hope. Foundation 1, Foundation 2 or Gaia? Foundation 1, Foundation 2 or Gaia? Foundation 1, Foundation 2 or Gaia??? Arthur C. Clarke - Odyssey Series Not only a great science fiction writer, but a great visionary who predicted developments such as communication satellites long before they came into being and famously claimed that any technology advanced enough is indistinguishable from magic. I read this series years ago, and unfortunately have retained too little of it to say anything more than this is worth reading!! =P William Gibson - Neuromancer Hailed as the coming of age of the cyberpunk sub-genre, this novel typifies the gritty, run-down, tech-permeated world envisioned in cyberpunk novels. Neuromancer's power lies in its ability to grasp you and throw you into a world radically different from what conventional science fiction potrays. There are no squawking robots, no huge spaceships, no lasers going off. Instead you have sentient AIs and genetic engineering, and hacking has achieved primacy among human vocations. "...Headlong motion through walls of emerald green, milky jade, the sensation of speed beyond anything he'd known before in cyberspace....The Tessier-Ashpool ice shattered, peeling away from the Chinese program's thrust, a worrying impression of solid fluidity, as though the shards of a broken mirror bent and elongated as they fell..."

In the sense you can come up with any number of these 'plots' Boy raised by Vietnamese parents suddenly picked up by the CIA who say he's the son of a crack CIA agent and a Vietcong intelligence operative. Now its the 21st century and the war on terror and they need his father's skills.... Orphan raised in some monastery finds out that he's the heir of an ancient order of Templar Knights and he must safeguard a secret that threatens all of Christianity (this is Dan Brown/Indiana Jones style) etc etc...

Sounds a bit cliched to me. I just finished reading Asimov's 1st and 2nd Galactic series, finally ticked them off since I'd already read Foundation ages ago and reading Foundation first is a bit like jumping the gun. Before that O'Henry's short stories, before that the 8th Malazan book.

Dark psy and hardcore crossblend
karan129 replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I liked the first half, especially the beginning had this real alien feeling You've obviously worked on the sounds. I didn't like the second half that much. Maybe you keep the distorted BD going, and change the rhythm, say using the acid synths that came in for a bit in the beginning. -
If you like prog, you could try Ace Ventura. I did like one track of his, Ace Ventura vs Lish - The Light

Download Scorched Acid Policy BPM=185 I was initially trying to make an Acid breaks track a la "Acid 8000" and then I discovered DnB and it made much more sense to make an Acid DnB track besides I really couldn't find any Acid DnB. You might find the intro a bit long, thats because I like interesting, engaging intros. After that its just drumloops+broken bass+acid. I hope I'm on the right track and the sounds are okay. On another note, has anyone else had encoding problems with high frequency sounds in FL? There is some high freq distortion which is not coming out exactly right even in WAV using the 512 point sinc algorithm.

Recommend me fast, Hard hitting breaks/DnB

My favourite DnB track is now a BSE one called Breach. Its simply stunning, a blend of melody and rhythm which I couldn't get out of my head. -
How to get the "tight" sound?
karan129 replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
The easiest thing I found which helped make a track more professinoal sounding was EQing each channel properly, for examples ensuring frequencies don't overlap. You have to mess around with the EQ settings till it sounds the way you want it to, say give the kick some gain on the higher frequencies and cut it at the bass frequencies etc...ofcourse this is very basic, I have no idea about advanced mastering techniques. -
My take on classic trance
karan129 replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I liked it, it was deep and atmospheric. However I thought it was more like techno, not that it wasn't good or anything thats just how I felt. Maybe you can continue the lead synth for longer and introduce slight variations in pitch or note length. Have you heard Plastikman - Plasticine? Something like that... -
This album has some amazing tracks on it, Fly of the Pheonix especially. It has this simply melody at the beginning which is so beautiful, and in the middle another outwordly melody starts off. The first track has some great acid on it flying all around Imo the album is very underrated.

I've made a list of the trippiest acidic tracks I've come across, I'll just paste it here. Its not all trance, some of it is breaks/techno but its all fairly trippy and hard. All these tracks make me go "ASSEEEEDDDDD" =P The essential ones are.... # Bamboo Forest - Sadhu (Goa) # Cosmosis - Gift of the Gods (Goa) # Fatboy Slim - Acid 8000 (Breaks) # Hardfloor - Acperience 1 (Trance) The essential hard acid trance track for many. # Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin' Acid Mix or Original) (Breaks) # Hallucinogen - Space Pussy (Goa/Psy) # Mama Indica - Radioactive Rain (Hard Acid Goa) THIS is what you're really looking for. The best hard acid goa track I've heard, better than any Cosmosis too # Moonweed - Telepath (Trance) # MWNN presents Yogi and Grey One - Big Trouble in Outer Space (Dark Goa) Best acidic dark goa track. # Solar Quest - Acidophilez album (HARD Acid Trance) The entire album is good acid trance, but Acid Air Raid (George's All Nighter Mix) will blow your mind, it blew mine for sure. # Space Tribe vs Electric Universe - Rabbit Hole (Full-on Psy) Plus every single track on Thru the Looking Glass , get it!! # Stakker - Stakker Humanoid (House) # Zodiac Youth - Fast Forward the Future (Voodoo People Mix) (Goa) Make sure you get this mix, the Hallucinogen mix has a lot less acid. The rest, still some very trippy stuff # Chemical Brothers - Believe (Breaks) The acid only peaks towards the end, maybe there is a mix that focuses on the acid more. # Darshan - Speed Freak (Dark Goa) This is you usual darkpsy track but the middle of this track has some amazing acid. # Doof - Double Dragons (Goa) # Doran vs Joshua Ryan - Unreal Taking that acid to stratospheric frequencies! # Kopfuss Resonator and DJ Jörg - Whipbird (Goa) # Misjah & Groovehead - Trippin' Out (Rave-ish Trance) # Phuture - Acid Trax # Plastikman - Plasticine (Minimal Techno) # Razor's Edge - Exquisite Sin (Exquisite Acid Mix) (Trance) # Trilithon - Trance Dance (Goa) I was listening to this on the Milkdrop preset Rovostar - Tripmaker (Space Trip Mix) and man, was it trippy! # Uberzone - The Brain (Braindusted) (Acid Breaks)

The track Dead Cities simply owns. The dark feel it conveys and the presence it has is on par with the best dark psy.

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata...this version -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZaTzSWqXCU Put a kick under it and I swear it'll be a trance track :posford: Also check out this thread -> http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53759

Maybe trying Lucid Dreaming could help...

Good stuff :clapping: Psy and DnB make a great mix, its like the craziness of Psy and DnB get multiplied \o/ My unknowledgeable 2 cents....I felt it could do with some hats other the time between the kick and snare seems empty, or you could a highly chopped kick roll or even a staccato bassline. The BPM could be increased a bit, because the kick and the snare seemed a little too spaced out. The kick seems to be more of a "psyish" one than a "DnB" one, in the sense imo less bass should be eqed out.

Psytones is right, the albums' more about having fun, I enjoyed it better second listen onwards, but the older stuff is better. My review. Tracklisting 1 Invaders Must Die (4:55) 2 Omen (3:36) 3 Thunder (4:09) Vocals - Brother Culture 4 Colours (3:28) 5 Take Me To The Hospital (3:40) 6 Warrior's Dance (5:13) Written-By - Anthony Srock , Bridgett Grace* , Jeff Mills (Jeff Mills? Nice :] ) 7 Run With The Wolves (4:25) Drums [Live] - Dave Grohl 8 Omen Reprise (2:14) 9 World's On Fire (4:50) 10 Piranha (4:05) 11 Stand Up (5:27) Drums [Live] - Dave Grohl The first and title track Invaders Must Die sets the tone for the rest of the album, combining a range of influences including electro, rock and rave. You have guitar riffs, catchy vocals "We are the Prodigy!", and distorted electro bass, topped with a ravey hook to get you moving. Omen follows up with a catchy, jump up rhythm, and an anti-establishment theme "The writing's on the wall/It won't go away". Its definitely one of the better tracks on the album. "Thunder moves into electro-house territory with funky rhythms and a ragga style vocal. Colours moves into hard dance territory, and is quickly forgotten the moment Take Me to the Hospital starts with a clear rave hook, a shout-out vocals "Take Me to the Hospital!" and the jungle-ish beats! This track will definitely remind you of the good old 90s Prodigy tracks such as Everybody in the Place and their first album Experience. Good stuff. Warriors Dance has a anthemic feel to it, with happy female vocals and uplifting synths, sure to light up the dance floor. The album takes an interesting turn with Run with the Wolves moving into rock territory, with guitar riffs and punk vocals. World's On Fire and Piranha follow in a similar vein. The last track Stand Up is one of the tracks I liked on the album. Its a bouncy, appealing track with some nice synth lines and omgah! is that acid we hear at the 3 minute mark?! Yes, it is, and some funky stuff at that. Okay, okay I used to equaliser to cut all the other stuff out and get the acid. But yeah, the last track is good fun. The album does not bring anything new to the fore. Instead The Prodigy has continued the more accessible feel of AONO, with the obvious rock and electro influences. This is evident even from the shorter, easier to digest track lengths. Those looking for the Prodigy sound of the 90s will be disappointed for the most part as this album is more hard dance than anything else. Oh, there are some ravey hooks and breaks in there, but its not the same. Having said that, the album's decent enough to be worth a listen, irrespective of taste.

This is SO irritating. Whats even more irritating is that classical music like beethoven or Indian classical etc frequently has no vocals either. But does anyone go "Why do you listen to classical?" Hypocrisy I say. Exactly. Also some people look for an identity in music, like in the lyrics, which expresses what they feel. Psy listeners don't want any of the lyric nonsense, we just want the perfect, trippy stuff :posford: IMO synthesizers go beyond what the human voice can achieve. Besides, I don't think vocals can keep up with 140+ BPM. I do think the vocals on The Cranberries - Zombie are pretty trippy though.

I've been exploring some DnB and for fast, crazy as hell, trippish broken bass till now no track has beat Dieselboy - Subculture (Upbeats Remix) for me. Counterstrike - Maniac is good too. Ed Rush and Optical has some minimal, tech-ish DnB. For a smoother, yet fast sound, there is this track The Militia - You and I Know. It has some great sub-bass. Try the the album Dieselboy - Human Resource too, thats where the Subculture track comes from.

Trilithon - Trance Dance 128 This was made in '91 and it sounds good 18 years later. Its under-under-rated!

Trilithon - Trance Dance 128 It was made all the way back in '91 and it sounds like vintage AP Still good today, its under-underrated!

Ubar Tmar. He did this in 2005 under the alias of uvantam.com (why that name?) and then....?
