Um.. What's wrong with "Amithaba"/Felipe?
Padmapani replied to Shpongled247's topic in General Psytrance
that's what society does to addicts. the illegality of drugs, the resulting unregulated market and the social stigma are responsible for that. once the money runs out or the usual supply is cut off that leaves people with no other option than a lifestyle like the stereotypical "junkie". i am addicted to cigarettes. do you think your paragraph applies to me? there are many pain patiens who take opiates/opioids (and heroin is just an opiate like any other) and live a perfectly normal life, just like i do. it's only when they are cut off from their prescription (which is happening all the time over there in the u.s.) that most turn to the black market (first to pharmaceutical opioids then heroin because it's cheaper) and ultimately become "junkies". that's also the reason why substitution programs work so well. over here the people get morphine (=the main ingredient in opium; also it doesn't have the unpleasant side effects of methadone) which allows them to live normal lives as responsible adults. -
of course it was more work back then, but i rather appreciate the finished piece of music than the amount of work put into it. no sane person is going to say "lame, he's modded his 303 with a midi input and doesn't use the built in sequencer that's a pain in the ass to work with". and i don't care about how many microedits some psycore artist did to achieve his fx, i still don't like the music. my opinion depends on how it sounds.

i often wonder if old tracks that some consider classics now, but are pretty simplistic, sound a bit amateurish and aren't mixed very well, would even be released if they were unknown and you sent them to one of the top labels now. my guess would be that the artists would get a reply like "go back and work on it a little more before you send us something" for tracks like etnica - the gili's voyage, prana - mugen, d5 - cranial meltdown or paradise connection - portamento.

1. for us who discovered goa somewhere in the 00s they are fresh and new. we appreciate those tracks for what they are and not for what we remember from our "golden days". 2. have you actually listened to some newschool goa releases of the last few years? obviously you have, so can you name any oldschool track that sounds like artha - bali, filteria - the big blue or e-mantra - dansul ielelor? newschool goa has had its time when copying oldschool was ok and when anything with melodies (the more melodies the better) was considered acceptable, because we were starved of this kind of music. but it has matured a lot since then and i cannot understand your point. 3. so what? the big names want to stay big names and produce cheap(er) music for the masses. why bother with them when there are so much new gems to be discovered? when i go and pointlessly chase my youth i listen to freetekno or ragga jungle. goa is the future no, please, no! agreed. but then again i don't think that goa hasn't evolved. we have those artists like for instance aurax or computer controlled who keep it purely oldschool, but the definition of goa trance has broadened a lot in the last 10-15 years. there are fullon tracks from 2003 that sound like oldschool goa rather than fullon when compared to some newschool tracks. it's a great feat to make music that sounds more like fullon than fullon itself while it still is unmistakably goa (as opposed to fullon), if you know what i mean (you probably don't ). then psynews probably isn't the right forum for you. it was around 2005 when i realized why those few goa tracks (ap, d5, ...) i had on my harddrive were so much better than the "goa" they were playing at the parties all the time (and that fullon doesn't mean that it's the most intense music that envelops you with layers of melodies). a whole new world opened up

The Psychedelic Trance, in its entirety
Padmapani replied to Lightforce's topic in General Psytrance
yes and no. morning is an adjective that can apply to multiple styles. morning goa, morning fullon, ... (mostly these two ). but it was often considered a serparate style by some around 2004 or so (at a time when no one thought of morning goa anyway ). it was played towards dawn/sunrise obviously and these tracks sometimes give me a really hard time to categorise now. traditionally i considered them fullon, they were released with other fullon by artists usually making fullon (so i mostly go with that), but compared to modern progressive (which has moved a lot towards fullon) they sound more like progressive... examples would be talamasca - cancer or cosma - minimal vertical. minimal psytrance was definitely a style back then, but only popular for a short peroid of time. i wasn't around in the psy scene back in 2001, so i can only guess that it was always considered to be a subgenre of progressive. shiva chandra and necton represent. and the panzar productionz label try to give it a revival. tech trance is a bad name i think. in "tech trance" psy it's definitely discinct from the ("real") tech trance, which is why i rather call in psytek. it's often more like techno with a rolling bassline and a psychedelic edge than any kind of trance. what minimal psy is to progressive, psytek is to psytrance. planet ben - silver or x-dream - irritant would be the albums that come to my mind. psytek musn't be confused with psy-techno - a term that turned up in the last few years and the music it's applied to sounds like sped up and cheaply produced minimal techno with a psy squelch every now and then. about fullon: you mention that fullon is characterised by being influenced by electro house among other things. this cannot be (well, it's happening right now, but it's debatable if such music is even to be called fullon ) because fullon has been around for much much longer than electro house. i also wouldn't call fullon the undoubtedly most popular style simply because it's not. it has been the most popular from its inception until 2011 or 2012 or so, but progressive and darkpsy (subgenres) have taken its place by now. many parties focus only on one of the two and the prime time slots in festival lineups are firmly in the hands of darkpsy. about darkpsy: it's a bit confusing to read, but i guess you are trying to say that hitech mainly differs from psycore? hitech is just as fast, but doesn't have the abrasive, "evil" sound to it. it's more like sped-up fullon than sped-up darkpsy (=psycore). also, i have absolutely no idea what the third paragraph is supposed to mean. one last thing: why don't you just call it darkpsy? it's commonly referred to as dark psytrance, darkpsy or simply dark. the term "dark trance" is something i only know from ishkur's guide. other than that, really nice work! i especially love how well you selected the music to go along with the styles. the only thing that i'd add would be some human blue album to progressive. he was one of the pioneers and one of the best. edit: sorry i missed the part about hitech (though it would be included with darkpsy just like psycore ), so disregard my explanation above.- 349 replies

they did promise a new album with oldschool stuff if this video would reach 100 000 views. it has passed that mark 3 or 4 years ago. i think it's time for a "gnotr new album" thread, analogous to "hallucinogen new album" and "astral projection new album"

Fantastic tracks ruined by mastering/mixing.
Padmapani replied to Penzoline's topic in General Psytrance
you do have higher peaks with tracks that aren't mastered as loud, but are played at the same perceived loudness. that's the one reason for the loudness war with electronic music. if a track is compressed to death, you can turn up the volume more without the engineer getting worked up (or the speakers blowing out at smaller parties). -
you mean like thomas vitali, the owner of the plusquam label group, who also poses as the female artist psynina in his spare time (and who also singlehandedly destroyed many once great labels by buying them and releasing cheesy crap)? but really, i think this applies even more (but of course better hidden) to managers of corporations. the more money is involved, the more corruption, lies and fraud you'll find with the people in charge.

when i'm travelling in asia i don't miss many things i need at home. i'm fine with no internet for a month, i'm fine with no sweets for a month and i'm fine with listening to psy only every few days. it's indeed true that the music has a much deeper impact and seems even more beautiful if you make a short pause. but it's even more beautiful when you get home and can listen to it properly rather than on cheap, small, easy to carry headphones. you will many other grounds of pleasure, but keep in mind that frank zappa was a wise man when he put this in his album: "information is not knowledge knowledge is not wisdom wisdom is not truth truth is not beauty beauty is not love love is not music music is the best." it may be addictive, but so is eating good food. for myself, i don't believe in eating fast food for prolonged peroids of time to enjoy proper food much more afterwards. i also don't see psy as alienating. i rather see the rest of society, that looks down on psychedelic music, the associated culture and the people who listen to it, as alienating. i wouldn't want to have anything to do with such people but there are so many of them.

i don't see the distortion in let's turn on the wave editor, but i hear it. it's not clipping, but i guess it was limited too hard? of course we appreciate the booklet, the poster and the coloured cds. it's immediately noticable how much work and passion went into this release. and the remixes for sure are interesting. some are more raw, less polished and hyptotic than the originals and some are better than the originals. if some tracks were just a fraction of a db more silent, there would be no distortion and therefore not a single suggestion for improvements from me. so keep on doing what you do, it is very much appreciated

what a funny thread my favourites are imba's and filteria's remixes of alien pets. maybe i'm a bit biased about the former from listening to the original, sending some midis and getting regular updates, but anyway, both are imho better than the original and i'd love to dance to them at a festival (maybe i'll get a chance at sun this year ). having the best track of astral's remix cd available with better mastering is also a plus, even though the main melody doesn't really stand out as much here. remixes of old tracks aren't pointless at all imho. many old classics sound dated and flat now. and occasionally new artists can turn an average track (imho the originals of alien pets and mugen both fall into this category) into a gem. @anoebis i AM already complaining about the lack of morning trance

i just got my cd today and you're right. i hear these artifacts too. the mastering definitely isn't ideal with this remastered cd. but tbh, i still prefer the new version due to better (/more modern?) tonal balance and the "creamier" low end - even if it's objectively not of higher quality

have you listened to rain on mind rewind 1? take the break at 2:50. you'll hear everything ducking when the kick comes in. the track is totally overcompressed. but so what, it's a great track and even though i'd prefer a better, softer mastering it gets regular playtime and i enjoy it a lot. the same with the ap remixes. of course you can cite lots of examples where colin has done a great job, but analog dimension have done at least as good work with etnica live in athens.

i see it's conspicuously missing in the last round, so i'll go with: Artifact303 - Back to Space if you liked mindsphere before, you will love this -

What has been the best year in goa/psy history?
Padmapani replied to JISNEGRO's topic in General Psytrance
yup, but for post-2000 i'm not so sure. imho 2003 was better than 2004 and later 2009, 2011 and 2013 were all pretty good years. -

do suntrip also steal half your profit (i guess they will stock up on this release?)? to be honest i'd rather donate the 6€ difference for an extra shipment directly to dat records rather than the italian post.

favourite tracks since 2011 - not talking about albums
Padmapani replied to Celaripo's topic in General Psytrance
great track. a few weeks ago i heard it while sleeping (yes, actually just sleeping, though i suppose not very deeply) and it blew my mind. i would guess it might also have a profound effen when being in less naturally altered states of mind. other favourites are: Dimension 5 - Caprica Asura vs. Aes Dana - Elie Hunab Ku - Children of the Stones Filteria - Dog Days Bliss Filteria - Birds Lingva France (2013 Edit) Nova Fractal - Mass Extinction Prana - Mugen (Astral Projection Remix) Globular - To the Other Side of Fractal Phase Space Globular - Fire & Stars Androcell - Root of Pharmacology GMO vs. Dense - Looking out of the Pouch not counting more or less previously released tracks such as those from etnica live in athens or the rest of transstellar. -

it looks stunning. the tracklist as well as the artwork. -
none are as good as cosmic experience. silence in action has a few good and a few bad tracks, journey into outer space is one of the best fullon albums of the last few years, but anything else can imho be skipped. if you don't like your fullon with lots of guitars you shouldn't touch burning with a shitty stick (though i guess it's still better than a poke in the eye with a).
