i think the whole phase alignment thing only became agreed upon standard in the 10s. in the mid 00s there were tutorials teaching to cut the kick before the first bass note and also much of the 00s darkpsy has short kicks without any low end.

it's certainly interesting. i have an artist name in mind in case i'll some time in the future release some tracks, but there's already a metal band with the exact same name.

in the 90s people used the terms pretty interchangably. some called the music goa trance when played in goa and psychedelic trance when played elsewhere. goa trance originated in parties in goa obviously, but when the newer styles evolved elsewhere in the world (and needed a different name) the term psytrance was used widely where they were played.

i've never been satisfied with retro synth for bass. in theory it should be fine but the envelopes just dont sound quite right. es-1 is decent for that early 00s fullon sound, but not quite up to modern standards, esm likewise. this is the best bass i have come up with in alchemy up to now: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cprz5ayyobf00t4/Alchemy Bass 1.acp?dl=0 . you should try alchemy for psy bass. it probably has as least as much flexibility as something like serum, but that on the other hand makes tweaking more time consuming. i still haven't got it quite right but already like the results more than what i get from "traditional" bass synths like es-1 and esm.

i prefer to do it by ear (only confirming afterwards with the oscilloscope). with the oscilloscope it's easy to spot when it's totally out of phase, but the point where it sounds best is hard to find only with the oscilloscope (it's most often when kick and bass are mostly but not quite in phase) and depends on the exact kick and bass. @topic i prefer hive or zebra for basses. it's just so easy to get a good bass patch with hive.

thanks for this thread. i didn't know sensogram. no thread about old progressive would be complete without human blue (even though i think everyone will already know this one). another great artist from back in the day is protonica the closest thing to old progressive i've heard from recent releases is stereofeld

not in a strict sense, but it does also bind to the same receptors as lsd, mushrooms or mescaline and has a certain psychedelic component to it.

i've done that more than once it neither has the appeal or hard driving music like freetekno or hardcore, nor the space and atmosphere to let the mind run free like good psytrance has, nor the constant beat to allow for trancing out to it. just randomness. i do appreciate that it doesn't play the whole night at the mainfloor anymore.

i'm relatively new to darkpsy myself. i couldn't stand most of the stuff played before forest became dominant there. but if you like arjuna (stand alone is the track that finally won me over), artists like dohm, tengri, overdream, mark day, re-horakhty or farebi jalebi might also be worth a try for you. same here. i've become relatively tired of goa trance lately and prefer to explore other frontiers of psy atm. still, i don't think i'll ever stop enjoying the classics.

not necessarily. take any track from arjuna - primal contact and listen with headphones. there is no big overlayed structure but definitely plenty of storytelling there. of course that's not true for all (or probably even most darkpsy/forest) but there are gems out there.

yup. it's even worse than the other pop radio stations that play almost exactly the same. ö1 is not horrible, neither is fm4 (even though they stopped the shows with electronic music that's actually interesting a long time ago). tbh even ö regional is better than ö3. no, we don't have technikum city here. the best station we get is probably lounge fm. not that it matters much; there's no choice at work and i'll definitely never listen to radio at home. i completely agree about the filter. i have yet to meet any interesting person that just listens to what's played on the radio.

those tracks aren't as bad as what's played on the radio here in austria. have a taste here: this is the kind of utter crap i have to endure at work every day. the music is horrendously bad, the lyrics are even worse and the fact that singing in tune apparently is not in fashion anymore drives me crazy. my hypothesis is that modern pop music is more like advertisement than music. the only goal seems to be to make something that is annoying enough to be remembered and therefore stick out from the rest.

besides improving the listening experience (adam S3V, treatment, akg k812 or sennheiser hd800), i'd get a real 303 with midi mod (nothing sounds quite like the original) and some sort of eurorack setup.

from what i've read the people in question are far from having the best experience in the world, but can confront and talk about the more horrible experiences without shutting off completely due to the mdma.

i see your worries, but apparently it does work in a psychotherapy session (at least the results from studies have been promising). maybe also because the people getting mdma treatment there take it for the first time and comedowns aren't as pronounced for these people?

safrol is carcinogenic. it's been banned from foods in many places of the world because of that. methylamine is just one chemical you can use to turn safrole into mdma. both substances have shown great promise in the right context. so not just as a medicine given out, but in guided psychotherapy sessions. psychedelics seem to be useful for end-of-life anxiety and addiction and mdma is promising for ptsd because it lets people confront traumatic experiences without being overwhelmed with fear. if it feels fake or not doesn't matter if it does the job. i do agree with albert hofmann that such substances should be best used "in the hands of the shaman" (a doctor in our society), but i also don't think that prosecution of users or even sellers makes any sense. we've seen how much harm prohibition of alcohol caused to people in america.

tbh i normally use third party plugs for my basslines. with es-1 it's easy to get it sounding good, but not quite as good as i'd like. i want to look further into alchemy. so far i've gotten something decent but nothing to rival hive or zebra yet. linear phase eq. it's under eq right below the channel eq. you don't need any third party eqs when you have logic. channel eq is perfect for normal eq-ing, linear phase eq for linear phase obviously and the vintage eq collection has you covered when you need colour and saturation.

before and after phoscyon -> distortion -> eq -> saturation ( -> another eq only if necessary). but i think i've already outed myself as liking to make things unnecessarily complicated by eqing different bass notes in pretty much all circumstances not exclusive as far as i know. and he made the switch to mostly software comparatively soon i believe. another logic user :). for classic psy basslines you should try es1.

i would agree (for modern psy basslines at least), but i remember an old video by cosmosis saying that he sometimes uses abl2 for basslines. so it seems it is possible (or was possible for 00s fullon).

yeah, 303s need to be highpassed aggressively (if you're not doing acid techno where the 303 takes the place of the bassline). at first it may seem as if you cut all the meat off the sound, but if you compare to your favourite acidlines, you'll notice that they're all highpassed pretty harshly.
