I always wanted to come to a party in SA - I went there for a few months as a little kid and I have such vivid colourful memories of the place. I climbed table mountain the day before my 4th b'day and remember getting the nectar out of a beautiful red flower that grows on the trees around there. Definitely a place I'd like to return to. I have one question though Skragg... how settled is the race issue these days. I am white and am married to an Indian woman - and in some countries we are not treated too well as a mixed race couple... what are your honest opinions about our chances in SA ? bomble

I like the design, colouring & lettering (much better than before). Having said that, I am a bit tired of the computer/3D graphics style of cover that seems so popular with trance stuff. I would maybe prefer something hand drawn/painted. I am not saying that this isn't artistic - obviously it is and I certainly couldn't do it. It's just that I find really crazy psychedelic paintings to be much more potent and organic. Stuff like Alex Grey, Brahma, Giger, Tim Smile, NOS, Inga Bourin etc. or the old Gandalf's Garden stuff of the 60s. Just my taste I guess. bomble

I have to say that nice digipack design can be a lot more practical - they don't crack so easily and generally the little plastic bits that hold the hole in the cd are less flimsy. Digipack can have an insert too - Juno Reactors Shango has some pics inside, and some come with a slit to put a pull-out section. But the main advantage of jewel cases is that if the get messed up they are easily replaced. bomble

Digital Sun are Linus Wessel, Sebastian Krueger and Victor Harder. Their album was released twice - slightly different the second time around I think. I have Re-collection Nice flowing morning stuff. Nothing too challenging or groundbreaking but very enjoyable. Highlight for me is Space Flipper. bomble

The Butterfly trilogy is great, but if you like the posford touch go for Magnetica and if you crave the flavour of Greg Hunter listen to Concrete Tourist. bomble

A very solid compilation of electronically flavoured beats. Highlights are Ooze, Eric Elser, Jules Verne & Tripplegame. Not absolutely essential, but well worthwhile if you are a fan of chillout material. 7/10 bomble

His first venture brought us Mana Medicine to heal the soul and weren't we grateful! As if we didn't have enough to thank the LSD dream team for already they give us this. Elucidations is another album that any chillout lover shouldn't be without. Where Mana Medicine focussed on the ethnic influences on this music style, Elucidations offers a more sneaky bleepy trip of low velocity psychedelic treats. So a little about the tracks. I am beginning to think that all that Ott touches turns to liquid gold. Perhaps not the finest work with the Ott stamp on it, but still first class. Rich, rootsy and can't fail to put a smile on your face - just a shame it ends a bit abruptly. Then it's Kiwa. From out of the Scandinavian forests, something wicked this way comes? I have heard and loved some of Kiwa's dancefloor tracks, but didn't really expect chilling to be on the agenda. How wrong I was - this is tight, wonderfully weird and strangely beautiful music. The sort of thing Matsuri might have stuck on sympathy in chaos 4 if there had been one! Drum Druids is Jez Laughing Buddha in another guise. I can't say I'm surprised that this is great? it just sneaks up on you getting gradually more intense until toes are tapping and your head is spinning. Humito is Humphrey and Chris Ingeoussauria. This stuff is clever, subtle and intricate. Avoiding an obvious melody this just tweaks and cranks the synapses while the body is held down by a slow and steady bassline. Violet Vision take over and turn up the funkometer. Psychedelic and splendidly evolving? certainly taking Shpongle and Deviant Electronics influences but by no means imitating. Lusine ICL is jazz meets electronica meets lounge. Quality stuff. The Kumba Mela - one of the best tracks from one of the best chillout albums (This is a track from East of the river ganges - not a new release). Enough said. Abacus opens beautifully - a brief ethnic twist and then into a gem with a lounge beat smattered with acidic noising and weird strings, vocoded chants and the like. Not a million miles away from Ju Ju Space Jazz perhaps. Humito finish the album off in similar fashion to the earlier track - intelligent and intriguing with breaks and complex rythms. There are no weak tracks on this album - though some are more to my taste than others. This shows the maturity that the psychedelic chillout scene is capable of and I strongly recommend it. Sometimes chillout needs the warmth of catchy hooks and melodies, and that's not really on the agenda here. Nor is it truly ambient. But if you are looking for quietly clever, psychoactive brainfood to lie back to?welcome to the spaceship. 8/10
