For anybody who wants to try out something a little different.... A mix of mine is being featured during this entire month on the website: Bijou Breaks The style is breaks in the 130-135bpm range - heavy on the groove. While I wouldn't consider the entire thing a psy-breaks mix, there are definitely an abundance of psychedelic-flavored moments to give your brain a little spice. The mix can be found in the Featured DJ section of the Bijou Breaks website. It is called Gonzo Beats, and it is my little tribute to the recently-deceased king of all things gonzo. A link directly to the download page is here. If you are into the funkier side of music, definitely check out the rest of the site as well - they always have some nice breaks mixes available for the ears. Here is a tracklist: Dr. Krelm - Gonzo Beats - Feb. 2005 01. Coburn vs. Dumb Blonde - Sugar Lips (Great Stuff Rec.) 02. Forme - let it all out (Marine Parade) 03. Smight - Labels, Lies and Warnings [Habersham's Dark & Sexy Remix] (Confi-Dance) 04. Dislexik - Air of Dawn (Pure Phunk Recordings) 05. Phil K & Habersham - Cloudbrake (Audio Therapy) 06. Sole Claw - Edge of the Earth (Pure Phunk Recordings) 07. Splitloop - Unbelievable (Sinister Recordings) 08. Cirrus feat. Aaron Carter - Get Loose [Trona Remix] (Cirrus Cutz) 09. Lee Coombs & Dylan Rhymes - Alright All Night (Finger Lickin') 10. Karton - Fire Fucker (Sound Not Scene) 11. Benz & MD - Radience [introspective Remic] (Release Records) 12. Introspective - Slavery Inc. (Sinister Recordings) CAN I GET AN AMEN?!?!

Artist: Drone Album: 23 Days Label: Headstick Recordings Genre: Progressive Trance Year: Feb. 2005 Tracklisting: 01. Airwave 02. The Blackroom 03. White Screen 04. Not 05. So 15b 06. Next Time 07. Anything 08. Enstikt 09. Active Reserve With their first release – the often-unclassifiable tek-flavored album from label-head Igneous Sauria – Greek upstart Headstick Recordings proved themselves as a label willing to dispense with any trends and blaze a their unique path into a musical wilderness. In “23 Days”, the smoothly atmospheric follow-up from fellow Greek duo Drone, Headstick continues to carve their own niche into progressive psychedelia: original, undefinable, progressive-minded, and thick on groove. The music: With a mish-mash of influences pushing through the soundscapes in 23 Days, the most definable characteristic to firmly grab the listener is an atmospheric sense of melancholy. Each song is an expressive, often emotional ride, but the story is gently expressed through subtle developments in atmosphere, percussion and structure. Underlying each song is smooth tribalistic percussion and a throbbing bassline. Despite the similar elements throughout, the specific flavor of each track still varies enough to avoid monotony. From the start, Drone holds no punches – the opening track “Airwave” is easily one of the best on the CD, providing a dark underlying mood while skillfully traversing a journey of hypnotic rhythm, crafty melody and eery FX. The ride through the first 6 songs is utterly fantastic and diverse. The subtly emotional “The Blackroom” manages to smoothly speak volumes using only minimal variations in atmospheres and progressions while “White Screen” is a trip into relaxed tribal hypnosis (literally). “Not” and “So 15b” beg for a late-morning dancefloor under the sun with their lush sampling and house-influenced rhythms. “Next Time” combines a heavy dub flavor reminiscent of Pitch Black with ethereal atmospheres – perfect for the last few hours of daylight. The CD loses a bit of steam and direction in the next two tracks before finally closing on a high note with the bouncing and redeeming house & breakbeat-flavored “Active Reserve”. Overall: Drone have managed to produce a striking collection that contains both enough variety and consistent musical unity to hold together well as a worthwhile album. The unique and subtle approach to progression within each song needs a few listens to fully grasp, but causes a few instances of picking your jaw up off the ground when you realize what they are doing. A mixture of influences can be heard here – progressive, breakbeat, house, tribal and psychedelic. It all works together extremely well and gives scarce boring moments. A pair of tracks (“Anything” and “Enstinkt”) aren’t particularly exciting when compared to the rest, but the unique and individual character of the other 7 tracks is more than enough to leave an overwhelmingly positive impression. Rating: 8/10 Favorite tracks: 1-6, 8 (1, 2 and 4 are particularly nice on headphones ) info: http://www.headstick.gr http://www.drone-project.com

Deck Wizard Vol. 1 - Psychedelic Trance Mix - mixed by Mark Allen Here's a link/tracklist: http://www.discogs.com/release/237275 One of my early introductions to goa in a mixed setting. Seriously amazing track selection and mixing. The journey is flawless.

Hey deviant_g - have you heard Karton? They released one 12" in 2004 and have nother one coming out in about a month. The label they released on (Sound Not Scene) is more well-known in nu-skool circles, but the track that came out ("Fire Fucker") is heavily psychdedelic breakbeat. Check 'em out! Also, are you familiar with the artist Introspective? Again, his main label (Sinister Recordings) is more known in the nu-skool breaks scene, but his sound is very psychedelic. Check out his "Time Travel" and "Slavery Incorporated" singles if you aren't already familiar with the guy.

Psynews is probably better for open discussion. Isratrance is much more informational about parties, releases, artists, etc. Why somebody would even waste their to make a poll as to which is "better" is beyond me. Who gives a flying fuck? They both serve their different purposes well. edit: This topic is definitely not KILLAR!!!!

Broken Symmetry on http://www.eccentricbeats.com - broadcasting *Monday* (Feb. 7) chat on http://www.sonicblend.com/forum/mods/flashChat/flashchat.php My guest(s) for this week's mix are Sweden-based production & DJing duo Holm & Andersen. Holm & Andersen are made up of Kristian Thinning Andersen & Kim "Budda" Holm. Kristian is well-known for his legendary goa works under the names Elysium Project, Elysium, Sheyba and others. He previously contributed a great mix to Broken Symmetry in March 2004. The Holm & Andersen project is an outlet for these producers to showcase more groovin' progressive tek-house sounds. With releases already signed to Tribal Vision Records, this pair is one to watch out for in 2005. www.holm-andersen.com (site currently under development) For the first hour, I stir up an eclectic mix of breakbeat filth, tribal grooves and progressive bliss. For the second hour, Holm & Andersen provide a smooth techy journey with a couple exclusive previews of what to expect from their studio. --- info: Broken Symmetry feat. Artist: Various Album: Inspirazzia Label: VP Records Genre: Progressive Trance/house/breakbeat Year: Jan. 2005 Tracklisting: 01. Igal M. – Fall in Green 02. D-Sens – What You Want 03. Andre Absolut – Elevent 1 04. Qualia - Feedback 05. Vision & Canedy – Insane 06. V-Tunes – Girl 07. Sweat Attack vs. Klangstrahler – What Can I Say 08. Feuerhake & Okay – Move the Signal 09. Homer & Lazon – To the Unknown VP Records is the new deep progressive & tribal branch of the German/Israeli Domo Label Group. Headed by Israeli progressive maestro DJ Zombi, VP promises to showcase the grooviest of tribal progressive in Zombi’s unique vision. The first compilation, Inspirazzia, puts together a remarkably impressive lineup of veterans, current hot names and future stars, with a sound crossing over from progressive trance to breakbeat to deep tribal tech-house and beyond. Everything from the cover to the music is a different concept than we usually see for CD compilations – sleek and sexy, with a touch of naughtiness. The music: Opening Inspirazzia is an utterly sublime emotional progressive piece from newcomer Igal M. (half of psytrance duo Elec3) titled “Fall in Green”. A more perfect introduction to this fine label couldn’t be imagined – a simple chugging percussion & bassline drive the track as atmospheres and effects are smoothly layered on, gradually giving way to a simple yet highly touching melody. The melody is slowly developed to create an elegant build to a barely-noticeable peak, before you are brought back down equally as softly. This is deep emotional progressive trance as good as it gets – it also happens to be my favorite on the CD, so it gets the most space on paper. 100% musical velvet. The CD continues with a deep minimal grooving number by French artist D-Sens. Almost reminiscent of the minimal Plusquam style, “What You Want” goes much deeper with a slight housey flavor and the sneaky tease of a melody. It’s brilliantly understated yet it gets the message across. Current Swiss star André Absolut is next with the surprisingly dark “Elevent 1”. The lowest bassline I’ve heard in years blends with tribal percussion and creepy chords & FX to make one of the most standout pieces I’ve heard from him yet. Slovenian duo Qualia brings the CD back to peak time dancefloor energy with the bleepy and bass-driven “Feedback”. It’s not complex, deep or anything that any of the previous tracks have been – but it’s sure to get the dancers moving. Recent German successes Vision & Canedy follow with the 2nd big surprise of the CD – the melody-driven “Insane”. Taking a step back from the percussion-driven grooves that have made them famous, this duo turns in an astoundingly airy piece with a bit of an old-time German trance feel to it. If you liked “Sonntagmorgenheimfahrt” from their 2004 album on Hadshot, this one is for you. Pure class. Swiss newcomer V-Tunes turns in another deeply minimalistic track for this compilation in the simply-named “Girl”. Nice development, but still not the most exciting track on the compilation. Two veterans from the old Freeform crew are responsible for a pair of funky numbers towards the CD’s close. First is Sweat Attack vs. Klangstrahler giving a bit of guitar-driven funk with “What Can I Say”. Heavy guitar and vocal samples are the defining feature here – if you know earlier Klangstrahler work, you know what to expect. It’s not my thing, but I can see this working the floor. Feuerhake & Okay step up the funk even more with their first (and hopefully not final) foray into the land of breakbeat. Being a breaks fiend, I’m probably a bit biased, but this is the best work to date from Feuerhake. Heavy mental funk with a wicked beat – this is the sort of groove that’s been missing in progressive. More please! Closing the CD is Swedish duo Homer & Lazon, better known for their psy-prog moniker Tegma. Deep tribal percussion and dissonant acid stabs drive the track as vocal samples and simple melodies are slowly added to the mix. As with Tegma material, it’s a mixture of the dark with the redeeming – only with a more house-flavored rhythmical framework. Very cool. Overall: Hot damn, this is good. We get both fantastic debuts from several artists and major surprises from respected veterans. At best (ie, most of the CD), it’s surprising, moving and playful. At its worst...it’s still highly enjoyable. Hats off to Zombi and Domo for a fantastic debut. I’m gonna love to see how you follow this one up. Rating: 9/10 Favorite tracks: 1-5, 8, 9

With any sort of music, one has always had to sift through a huge pile of shit to find the gems. That's nothing new. People have always said the same thing with any genre - I've heard the same complaint about the goa/psy scene as long as I've been in it. It's up to the consumer to find the good stuff - it always has been. The music industry doesn't need to fall flat on its face to make it any easier. But IMO, digital stores are a good start - at least it keeps music-lovers from having to waste money on the shit. Instead of paying €15 for a pile of shit CD with 1-3 good tracks, you pay €3-4 for those good tracks only and completely skip the crap. And the real rip-off artists - the over-priced post system - don't get a damned penny. The artists (and labels) don't have to be starving in order for us to have good tunes....maybe I'm selfish, but I like the idea of the people who create the art I like being able to make it for me as a full-time job. -

One thing I should add is that the options for shipping a CD or downloading FLAC for the respective stores is definitely more expensive than paying for a 320kbps mp3 download from each. For me, the 320kbps mp3 option from each is a sufficient option, but I do know that a lot of people want a lossless format and are willing to pay more. Hopefully as bandwidth becomes cheaper, more places will offer FLAC & WAV downloads at little or no extra cost. -

What you are wanting with the proghouse stuff is already available from several places. Try these... www.beatport.com - you can have custom .wav data CDs (ie, the .wav files burned to a CD - you would have to re-burn for audio CDs) burned and shipped to you. I think they will also have downloadable WAV or FLAC files sometime this year www.edmdigital.com - downloadable FLAC www.fiberlineaudio.com - will send custom CDs -

krelmatrix replied to Trancehead's topic in General Psytrance
I believe you can state an average bitrate, if I'm not mistaken. I know with Beatport, they claim an average of 192kbps for their VBR mp4 files. And when I look at the info for a certain file in iTunes, it gives a single number for the bitrate of VBR files (usually 180-200 for the mp4 files I buy from Beatport). So I think if you did use VBR on Res.Earth, you could say what the average encoding of the file is, which should be decently accurate. An average 320kbps VBR mp3 should be higher quality than a 320kbps CBR mp3, AFAIK. -

krelmatrix replied to Trancehead's topic in General Psytrance
Yeah, VBR will work as well - even better. The main thing I would hate to see is if a new store would sell a low bitrate like 192kbps. Click-a-track is a store that was started by the Plusquam guys and had a lot of nice psy-progressive labels. I would have blown loads of money there except for the fact that they only sold 192kbps format and did not even consider the possibility of anything higher. Several other stores I've checked out have only had 192kbps files (CBR) as well, which is quite a shame, IMO. 320 CBR is IMO the minimum I would like to see. But a 320 VBR would be even better. -

krelmatrix replied to Trancehead's topic in General Psytrance
Yes, please. I would fully support something like this - I'm a regular customer of places like Beatport and EDM Digital that do the digital download thing (although more for progressive/tribal/breaks stuff) and would most definitely buy a lot of psytrance in this format as well. I just don't have the money to spend €12-15 for a CD with only 2-3 good tracks, so as I result I only get a handful of psytrance CDs per year and have fallen behind in keeping up with the style. Spindrift gave very some good advice from the label/shop owner side. Speaking from the consumer/DJ side, there are also some things to keep in mind. 1. Price - 2 GBP is far to high for an individual track, period. The successful stores are able to keep their prices at 1-1.50 USD per track. You could maybe get away with 2-2.50 for exclusive digital-only pre-releases and remixes, but few people are going to to pay so much for a single track that they can freely download anyways. 2. DRM - just say no. It's a useless pain in the ass to deal with and will turn countless customers away. As long as the file can be burned to a CD then re-ripped, it can (and will) be cracked. Also, if you are selling tracks that are released on CD, the tracks will be shared on P2P networks anyways. It accomplishes nothing except creating problems and pissing off potential customers. 3. Quality - you must offer the hightest quality possible. For mp3, 320 kbps. For mp4, 192 kbps. It is also advisable to offer lossless FLAC. The most common request I see on the forums at other digital stores is to offer .wav for download as well. Bandwidth costs may prohibit this from being possible right now, but it give you the general idea of what consumers want - highest quality possible. With something so complex as psytrance, I would refuse to buy a track encoded at less than 320kbps (and I'm certianly not the only one). 4. Independent artists - cool idea, but please be sure to have a very strict quality-control screening. You don't want it to turn into something like mp3.com where every dick & harry with a pirated copy of Acid or Reason is trying to sell their crap. Preview all potential stuff, only take the very best. You could also combine the digital store and digital label concepts (ala Audiojelly) so that the independent tracks are still technically signed to a label (the store's label). This gives you a bit of help with the screening since you will only be making available tracks that you want represented on your digital label. I do hope you are able to get something like this going. I shell out quite a bit of money at places like Beatport, and would love an option to buy a lot of psytrance in this way as well. Whether the format is mp3, FLAC, wav or something yet to be invented, digital stores are going to be a huge part (if not the major part) of the music sales industry in coming years. I've found it strikingly ironic that the psytrance scene, which is supposedly so much farther advanced in the technological sense, has lagged so far behind just about every other style of music for this. Time to catch up people!! -
I'll add another recommendation for Voov in Germany. The organizers have been doing the festival since the early-90s and know what they are doing. The atmosphere is wonderful, the sound is incredible, and the music is always outstanding. And it is definitely *not* on the progressive side - it's got it all. There is always one stage with more full-on and psychedelic sounds (in the last 2 years it's featured artists like Wizzy Noise, Silicon Sound, Altöm, Eskimo, Alien Project, etc) and a 2nd "alternative" stage with a wider range of music from progressive to tech-trance to more full-on sounds. www.voov-experience.de
