Hi psyheadz ! Today I'm gonna write a review about these insane french guys. Yep they are lunatic for real (proof : http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAQ8It_5UQw&list=UU0um1ltFRyJSizfmF-W-4RA&index=1&feature=plcp) I don't really dig psy usually but this EP is really cool, moreover Cinate is a friend of mine and he paid me for doing this review. (Just kiddin ) By the way this EP is available on bandcamp for 5$ or more : http://mindportal.ba...o-the-future-ep Tracklist : 01 - On the road to the future 02 - Portal 52 03 - The sand line 04 - Gravity 01 - On the road to the future I really love this intro, a colored crispy melody and a sweet soundscape. The bassline has some psystep flavour... Well we can say that the portal to the future is now open, you can start to bang your head \o/ 1:40 : After a small break an epic melo that sounds pretty much like that comes : Around 3:30 a big buildup starts, and pushes you slowly up to the stars. It doesn't leads you to a big and violent climax, those things will come later kids, it just pushes a sweet europhia feeling toward the end of the tune. 02 - Portal 52 First an orchestral intro with a buildup, then the track starts with a groovy robotic beat. "It's not music bitches, it's science" A soft melo is coming, leading you to another orchestral break part... Then a buildup starts, and this time the guys are serious, something heavy is coming ! The drums becomes crazy while a futuristic lead attacks your brain. Yay we want blood !!! Suddently, a wild lowpass appears ! The track reboots with a darker tone. But for good. After a second little buildup, the epic Mindportal's sound strikes again ! The story ends after that with a smooth melodic part. 03 - The sand line This intro makes you feel like you were visiting an arabic city by nights, but with droids. Sounds more or less like Tatooine in fact. This time it's 100% psystep, heavy wobbles and mystical melodies... The real pleasure starts at 2:10, just after few sitar notes releases a melodic robotic prayer (?) singing. Really nice atmosphere in this tune... A small break, then some drums starts playing with an acid sound. The whole package sounds a bit like congas.. Clever combo ! A fast buildup grows, then the psystep beat xplod ! The bass Roooarr then fall again and again ! "Staaaaaart !! piece of crap !!!!" The climax is great, nice job. Some soft ringin bells closes the track right after. 04 - Gravity An epic and dark piano melody open the tune, a drum n bass beat is following. A messy glitchy sound pretty much rapes you, then a fast kick/bass starts. Wicked !! 1:45 : here comes the lead, a bit trancy with a good rythm ! 3:25 : a theatrical atmosphere break, then the beat strikes again. 4:45 : the first orchestral melo plays again, and the builup starts with a mindfreak lead. "mothef**** epic dude" To conclude, this EP shows for me how awesome psy can be. It's not cheap and it's not sounding like something you ever heard 1000x times before(I'm not blaming regular psy. Well ok I do, but it deserves it ). These guys got skills and talent. Follow them, because I think that you'll hear more and more of them very soon !

@Goa Travellers: Agree ! this is just a regular 303, I had some good results with alien303. But I think that there is a second particular sound that is not the lead in fact, but a vanguard gate called "1 finger bassline 2" (god I hate this vst..) http://soundcloud.com/sharegoa/imperial-proj Doesn't really sounds the same, but here's the score :

Lmao, Nice review as usual Bravo Christophe, goa genius !

Hallucinogen : http://soundcloud.com/sharegoa/hallulike Not exaclty the same but prety close too I think... 2 sounds : some kind of a white noise and a 303. Note that the 303 is send to the white noise track on the mixer, so both sounds are using the same trigger and flanger. The white noise is made from the wind fx in albinos, but it can be made from any other plugin that generate this wave. The 303 is made with NWbassline and there is an automation on the cutoff : you don't want to push the knob too much, so set the min and max to approximatly 30% and 75%. (Hallucinogenl's lead seems to have a lower max, or maybe the resonance of the filter is a bit less high)

I haven't catch that layer stuff in your track ! So I think it's definitly the lead texture which needs to be involve a bit Story... well ! What you will really need is : 1/ speech (from anything : movies, youtube videos, etc), 2/ original samples (try www.freesound.org for example), 3/ Pads and noises (the vst I sent you is perfect for that purpose IMO !) It's pretty interesting to think about something special when you're starting a new project, like a movie scene, a place that you like, a book, anything ! And to try to recreate this atmosphere with music You can also pick up a sample and try to build a whole track around it by letting you feel the noise ! That's exaclty what Somnesia and I made for God's tears on Energy wave with a rainfall recording ! This is just few ideas, but I hope it will help !

I mean playing the same notes of your lead but with another instrument like doubling it. This is the "skull" of most of my tracks but it can be declined in many ways... For example I can have 2 or 3 breaks in a single track, depends of what I want and feel in this moment as you said ! Let's say that this is the "regular" structure for trance I think, it grows up step by step then fade out, just like the sensations it has to provide. A classic arrangement like in pop music (verse 1, refrain, verse 2, refrain...) would not be the best arrangement for a trance tune imo... But again rules are made to be broken so everybody's free to do whatever they want : if it works, it works Nice quote btw

Yes small breaks needs pad on the background in your track imo. Never used such a thing like ozone4... I think you need to use more powerful lead texture, to work on the EQ, or even to add layers The basic structure i use in my tracks is : intro/1st progressive part/ break/ buildup/ climax/ bigger climax/ release, outro. Psytrance and goa don't really have rules, you can do what you feel to surprise the listener, but it's important I think to lead him to a transe/frenesy state step by step
-
Pretty cool, I loved the break around 3:00 ! Now try to get more power and depth in your leads and in the track generally. (Maybe you need a bit more reverb/delay and pan adjustment !) And don't underestimate the power of pads, that's the trance essence and it adds a lot of presence

I think guitar sounds are the most difficult to reach with a virtual instrument =/ Never found any nice guitar VST... Slayer 2 can be ok for disto eventually, but for a dry sound like spanish guitar I just don't know dude !

Glad you like it !
