When I got the first Oood Album, must have been around 1996 I was completely blown away :-) On a few occasions I got drunk, listened to the CD with a friend and we were banging out heads to the sound of the beat for the entire duration. Very memorable :-) Oood is pronounced "Out of our Depth" Best Wishes Krell

Its a long shot, since it will sound a lot different. But, give Savage Scream a try. Best Wishes Krell

To someone who spent his entire life under the influence of LSD, not doing drugs for a week and getting a job would be a psychedelic experience, while doing LSD and listening to fucked up music would be just an everyday experience. hehe Krell -
Full On-Progressive, different genres-same side
Krell replied to Ormion's topic in General Psytrance
In regards to Progressive & Full On having destroyed "Goa" that is complete bullshit (Im sorry). Goa is a "non defined musical genre", and it still exists today. To put the genre "goa" to good use, then Goa is a continually evolving musical edge of the electronic music which is popular at "goa style parties"... There is no "true goa", if you were to define "Goa Trance" you would end up pointing out both progressive, full on, melodic, cheesy, chillout and a lot of other stuff. (Actually, any Goa Cutting Edge music you could define would per say exclude itself from being able to call itself "Goa Trance" since it has been boxed in, and as so its no longer free). I know this might be a bit difficult to fathom - but the first meaningfull genre definitions came with the words "Minimal Psy" "Israeli Trance" and "Tribal Trance" around 1996/97... So, saying that progressive & full on killed Goa is simply wrong, in fact goa created progressive and full on, and kept on living. Goa changed name to Psy - Goa Trance becomes Psychedelic Trance. This is a new name and not new musical content change as such. Now, the essence of "psychedelic" is to break rules and serving up alternate realities with no boundaries, as such, a state you get used to and are able to define would no longer be psychedelic. (Bookworms out there are welcome to correct me on this, but thats how I understand the term). What is psychedelic is also up to the individuals reality perception, however when talking about it in completely objective terms, it could per definition not be defined, since it is not a steady definable reality. Quote from Wikipedia.org "A psychedelic experience is characterized by the perception of aspects of one's mind previously unknown, or by the creative exuberance of the mind liberated from its ordinary fetters. Psychedelic states are one of the stations on the spectrum of experiences elicited by psychedelic substances. On that same spectrum will be found hallucinations, distortions of perception, synaesthesia, altered states of awareness, mystical states, and occasionally states resembling psychosis." So, we are talking about music which is portraying aspects of your mind previously unknown - In order to do this, you cant have the music being defined, since whatever is defined is known - In order to explore the unknown, you need to move beyond definitions and this is what "goa" or "Psychedelic" trance is all about. Now - We can talk about this forever, but what it boils down to is the commercial definition of something (which is the Goa Trance which was released on masse), or the music which was truely free, and existed whether it was released or not. I would say, in order to accept the commercial term, you would also have to accept that "goa trance" was already dead the day it was defined. So, if anything, "goa trance" committed suicide! However - I truely believe there are MANY artists out there producing music which is groundbreaking and different - Which is essentially "psychedelic trance", but we dont hear about them, because most of this music it simply to weird to put on the market.. So, only the ones who are very serious about understanding "psychedelic experiences" will come in contact with this music. Goa is the creative edge if anything... and if a "genre" then its an open undefinable genre because it defines the electronic music being played at Goa Style parties and as such there where many different styles - some chilled, some breakbeat, some trance 125-155bpm and others just fucked up noise... Free Music, that is what "goa" is really about. The super melodic stuff - Well, check out where it is produced and you will find most of it stamped "israel" which is why it was early defined as "Israeli Trance" - Which you could then call "Israeli Goa/Psy Trance". So much for the "progressive & full on" killer Goa Part. Its a nice motto, and I of course like and understand the intent - But, people are supposed to fight against each other and talk about music. In the electronic music scene it has been "This vs That" for AGES - it has nothing to do with music as such, its more like a human nature thing... Like "McDonalds vs Burger King", "My dad vs your dad" - We compare ourselves to each other and try to promote ourselves and our opinions... This can be good and bad, for those who keep an open mind its good, for those who dont its bad. So, in essence we should focus on creating open mindedness in general in the human culture - If we achieve that, we have achieved killing all the negative genre/taste wars. Theres good and bad music, and what is what is an individual thing - All the rest doesnt matter, and your just retarded when going to war over it. So I guess Im retared.... better call this quits hehe :-) Best Wishes Krell -
No, I dont think it suggests it is the "best" rhythm - I just think it suggests that there is a link and quite possible that when matching these frequencies its easy to achieve a state of trance. That is how I think of it. Perhaps there is a link to full on there - Many "beginners" start out with full on since they understand it so easily - This could be explained by this... However, I have the distinct feeling of that Im skating on thin ice here - Really, I have no facts to back any of all this up.. AFAIK people are still trying to understand what trance is. Guesswork from my side :-) I do know that I achieve different types of trance depending on the rhythm - What is best depends on the purpose of the trance... If you want to go up or down :-) Best Wishes Krell

Quote from http://perso.wanadoo.fr/psychedelic_trance...story_part3.htm "16th notes are the basic rhythmic division. The bpm (beats per minute) of Goa Trance tracks is quite medium, between 135 and 155, with an average at 145. Initially, the tempo was more moderate, a little bit more than 130, then it increased until 199, before another decrescendo following the influence of other musical genres. In passing, we can mention that a link is often made between the alpha waves frequencies of the human brain, associated with the state of trance, between 8 and 12 Hz, and a constant stream of 16th notes which, when played at the suggested average of 145 bpm, yields a flow of musical events at an average of 10 Hz. Coincidence or more ?" Now, this has been suggested elsewhere as well (for instance in the movie Liquid Crystal Vision), and I myself do not think it is a coincidence. But, fact of the matter is that there is no singular trance state, there are different ones and different rhythms and musical events stimulate different trance states / combine them. A break in a track might take you out of a trance state letting you "awaken" into less deep trance states untill its all gone (depending in the length of the break and events in it). For instance, if you have a long ambient break/passage with no beats/percussion there are no trance inducing elements anymore - There is just a calm sound while you drift up thru and away from the trance state you have achieved. However, I think you will enter the trancestate you came from much quicker than in the beginning, because you are already "tuned in". Anyway - While 145BPM combined with 16th notes might be the easiest for entering a not so deep trance, it is by no way a given fact that this rhythm will modulate every possible trance state there is. It is also not given that it is no good for entering deeper trance states, since there are more things going on in a track, like stuff repeating every 8 16 32 64 beats. The stuff which repeats slowly is ALSO trance inducing you see (all the repetitive sounds in a track are trance inducing). Trance comes from a sound OR event repeating itself, over and over - So, its a visual and audio stimulus (even physical). So, it is not per say linked to bassline BPM, but just to repetition as such. Imagine that BORING school teacher you once had, whos voice would make you "fall asleep" because it never changed pitch - He was actually entrancing the students :-) What it does is that it bores the brain and makes it shut itself down, perhaps a bit like if you watch a surface of white and you get your blind spot in your eye to cancel out the only black spot in the white - then you see only white because your brain makes it happen. (Its a subconscious trick / ability you can tune into when you try). Depending on the trance state sounds will disable functions in your brains perceptional state resulting in different kinds of experiences... Disable a bit of consciousness and you find yourself daydreaming fairly quickly for instance. Daydreaming for me is one of the first trance states and what I often do while listening to trance (also when dancing). Deeper trance states make me loose touch with my body, I tend to feel myself getting tunnel vision, very disconeected - Im almost affraid to tip over :-) Its just as intense as an acid tip, but its far more pleasant // when the "runners high" is there and your mind wanders off like that, it just feels so good, especially since you know YOU are doing it, alone, just nature and who you are :-) . There is interesting information online, I find it quite embarrassing that most trance DJs out there dont know the first thing about trance and what it can actually do for the human mind. For me, trance modulation theory is more interesting than harmonic mixing stuff for sure (but its all a balance).. However, this was not what this topic was about sorry. I like this ressource a lot http://www.trance.edu/ - Last I read thru it all it related to trance music as well. Another thing to read up on are different shamanic rituals, ritual drumming, dream quests etc. (These things I mostly get from my girlfriend, but I have planned studying it in the future). www.trance.edu stated, the first time I read it, that to achieve deep trance you need to listen to the same sound for 20minuttes... So, a 20 minutte long track would do it... But, Im actually not sure that is totally correct - I think, you might as well say "listening to the same rhythm" - and, for most trance tracks, even in the breaks, many dancers are still counting / hearing the beats in the breaks - since they imagine them... Therefore, I think deep trance is attainable on the dancefloor if you are not disturbed by friends or drunk people + kids yelling in every buildup. The best thing is this all leaves the door wide open for "trance djs" in regards to what music they can choose when sticking to a definition. I play, "Trance inducing music", this counts all full on, progressive & chillout // repetitive music in general. Great :-) Best Wishes Krell

Whattabout Necton "B12 Cocktail" Or early Ticon releases ? :-)

I dont have it either - So no :-P Reger you are missing my point completely - I am explaining to you how a collector feels about the things he collects. You can be the biggest psytrance freak in the whole wide world without ever buying anything or owning anything besides pirated Mp3s. However, for the collectors of items (and this goes for all collectors, not only the ones we are talking about in this topic) the things I said apply. Thats it. They are deeply in love with the music and very passionate about it, they want these physical effects in their lives. People want to touch things that are important to them - leave their mark on it if they can, or know they have been in contact with it. This way, they become part of it, one with it... Like, when guys stand by a car and talk about it, they will start kicking the wheels... If you admire something, you want to touch it! If you can :-) Thats it. And yes, Im sure that if you take 100 MP3 only kiddies and compare them to 100 other psytrancers who will buy stuff because they collect it. Im 100% sure the last group is generally by far the most dedicated psytrancers out there. Does it make them better people ? I think that would be overestimating the importance of music, but it does make them more involved with the music and the culture. Best Wishes Krell

I would try some psy tech trance.... Like Opsis perhaps. Nuclear Ramjet (gotta be some nuclear stuff there) Check out Aeon and Headstick Records. Also some Tim Schuldt "Theory of Gravitation" for instance. Best Wishes Krell

No it really isnt - The main reason for collectors to buy stuff is to own it, so they can feel it, have it in their hands. Theres no glory in owning the first MP3 release ever made in the scene for instance. But, if you own the first Goa Trance release on Dragonfly Records you can touch it and you have in your hands a piece of history which is dear to you. You can even protect it! Therefore, collectors are often the most extreme fanatics. It doesnt have to be CDs either, it can be some of Goa Gils old DAT machines, an old custom backdrop you have seen in an old movie - Whatever.. What matters is that you own a piece of your cultures history, and as such you become part of it. This is important for the fanatics... If you still think thats bullshit, well, then you try talking to some of the true collectors of different things out there and get it from them instead. I would NEVER part with my CD or Vinyl collection, even though I think some of them suck musicly... The reason I dont want to is that they are dear to me, sentimental value - this is what its about. This is also why people dont just download it off the net, because they truely, deeply care about the releases & every aspect of them. They want to have them in their hands and pet them! :-) Best Wishes Krell

Its around 300-400 CDs and a similar amount of vinyls if I dont remember wrong. Most of the CDs have been pretty expensive, 20 Euro or so, since they were bought between 1995-2000 in Denmark as "Import CD" - so it did cost me a lot. Hard to find time to enter all of them - A lot my CDs were actually stolen back in 1999, I got some of them back but not all - around 50 were missing - lots of "old and rare" releases, some of you guys would cry I think hehe :-/ The thing is, when you get that many CDs stolen, you might first notice the ones that are missing years after (they werent cataloged)... Sucks. I mostly just buy music specificly for DJ sets now - in 2001 where I spent the most I would buy music for around 100-200 Euro every month which is what it takes to stay current. If there were more gigs offered to me here in Denmark, that would still be the amount, but its pretty hard to get get gigs I think, unless you kiss ass and offer other stuff than DJing. Im just too good to sink to that level :-) Id rather stay home then :-) Best Wishes Krell

If you OWN the releases you become part of the history. That feels good. Physical contact with a historical item is important to people when they care about it deep inside. Best Wishes Krell

I believe it sounds a lot like Ololiuqui you can hear it in the groove - My guess it Chitty Bang or something - dunno if Im wrong - but I have it somewhere, great track :-) Check out the first album Best Wishes Krell -
I attended that party - It was organized by some of the same people who would go on to create the now defunct Creamcrop Records label. Tristan did not play live though, he DJed, very tech style tracks like Fools and Tools etc. Slide basicly just played his recent album release Unstable. Process was the best act at the event. It was also the first time I saw NOS backdrops, it was a pretty big venue and it was decorated in theme with egyptian stuff - Long banners etc. (Im quite sure it was Nos). The Stage was build a bit like a pyramid and there were dancers dressed like egyptians... Mmm, could also maybe have been Tribe of Frog (the dancers remind me of them).... It was all together a party worth remembering. Thanks for the flyers - A lot of them actually look worse than I remember - but an interesting thing is the many tribal themes etc :-) Best Wishes Krell

Another psytrance collectable for the freaks to chase after :-) Whats an original Malaka T-Shirt worth these days ? :-) Doesnt malaka mean shit or something ?

That is true - You could say "this track is very full on" - it describes intensity in the music or actually the experience as such. Full On could be a term on par with Hypnotic. A very Hypnotic Track, a very Full On track.... A very twisted track.... Another description could be "in your face" with those relentless melodies that just didnt want to go away (which many of us came to hate). Im sure many experience modern full on like "In your face Trance" also ehhee. Something we must also remember is that the word "Full On" got a commercial pad on the back with the release of Hommegas VA "Full On" Series. The same goes for the word Scandotrance which was featured on the cover of "A Progress in Trance" released on Transient. We should definately not underestimate the impact of words featured on releases which were distributed everywhere at once - especially back then. (both terms are still with us today). I call all music which is generally faster moving and more "in your face" full on, and everything slower and which has more focus on percussion, grooves etc progressive... (I can of course break it endlessly into subgenres, if I want to be a genre fascist:-) ) Stuff like Ux, Slide, Cosmosis and all the melodic goa trance is for me full on (its just ooold full on) - The spirit of those releases are still found in the new full on.... While the more tribal influensed tracks from "back then" have passed their spirit on into the progressive stuff. Its just evolved... I think Oforia / Tandu sounds a lot like new full on though. Just put on the Delirious album and have a listen, goes up and down, left and right with riffs and clean production - it was a MASSIVE HUGE MEGA hit back then, and I think it really set a benchmark for a lot of people (who liked that approach to trance). Best Wishes Krell

1200 mics "High Paradise" and 95% of all 1200 mics tracks.

What you have to understand is that the term full on was at the time the opposite of Minimal/Progressive - When a lot of the labels in the scene start to focus on a new sound which is not that melodic nor fast some people per say will not agree with it (meaning they find it offensive and dont want to support or listen to it). So, a need arises to differentiate between parties, floors & artists as either "full on" or "progressive" for everything goes under the name "psytrance / psychedelic trance".. If you dont like progressive and you go to an event and there is only progressive there you would have liked to know that beforehand on the flyer for instance (and people dont know EVERY name, only the true geeks do). Genres are born out of the need to define music, which is a need stimulated by the people. I defined myself as a Full On, Progressive & Chillout DJ for instance - under full on I include stuff like "dark psy" also, under Progressive I include stuff like "House or Tribal Trance" and under Chillout I include everything which is basicly chilled. Of course there are a lot of genre fascists out there who will want to tell others what is what - But, the truth is the genres are not defined by any one person, but for peoples need for them.. They are in a state of constant flux. Best Wishes Krell

Yes, have come to expect something like that from you :-P Good going son, your a winner Krell
