Remixes + Rarities, the latest album from Auckland’s Pitch Black, is a package of rare tracks and lovingly crafted remixes of other artists’ music, chosen by Paddy Free and Mike Hodgson to represent their 15 years as one of NZ’s favourite electronica acts. Known globally for their stomping live sets, Remixes + Rarities showcases Pitch Black’s mellower side. Beginning with a dancefloor friendly, but respectful, reworking of the Richard Nunns and Hirini Melbourne original, ‘Te Po’ and ending with an equally haunting version of Tiki’s ‘Past Present Future’, the album represents the past, present and future of the Pitch Black partnership. Included in the remixes are tracks by fellow NZ dub trailblazers International Observer and Salmonella Dub, who appear alongside independent music producer Tom Cosm and reggae legends Katchafire. Also fed through the PB warping machine are tracks from further afield: ‘Mirror Beach’ by Mirror System (the ambient project of System 7); and ‘A New Day’, a remix of a Sri Lankan track that Pitch Black did for the Laya Project, a collaboration of regional folk musicians affected by the 2004 tsunami. Included on the album are three Pitch Black rarities, one of which is a recording of 1996’s ‘I’m a Wanderer’, the first track the pair worked on together, which showcases the industrial beginnings of what would become the Pitch Black sound: a dynamic balancing act between heavily sculpted basslines and choppy melody. Also included is ‘Kaikoura Dub’, the track used on Whalerider after Mike – having been asked by Niki Caro for some music – gave her a 23 minute mix of a jam recorded in Kaikoura. “She ended up choosing a sliver for the film. We subsequently used the bones of this track for the tune ‘Elements Turn’ on Ape to Angel” The last rarity is ‘Protect the Grain’ a windborne ambient track that was previously released on the limited edition EP Flex around the time of widespread anti GE demonstrations in NZ and worldwide. Pitch Black have always been more than a dance act, but on Remixes + Rarities they demonstrate the full reach of the musical territory they love to explore. Out today on Dubmission Records, it can be picked up from good record shops, all download stores but ideally from BandCamp where the album bundle comes with 2 extra tracks, full artwork and an animation the boys composed the soundtrack to back in 97.

we intended to, but once we got them up in the studio, it was apparent that the original mastering by pete crooks had stood the test of time so any further polishing was unnecessary.

back in the mists of time, we released three, in our humble opinion, rather good compilations: "mashing up creation", "dubbed on planet skunk" and "more bass than space". this was before downloads really took off, and so none of the compilations were ever uploaded (legally, that is). in time, the physical copies ran out and so, for nearly 10 years now, most of the tracks on the compilations have unfortunately been unavailable to music lovers. on june 21st, we will be releasing "skunked on planet dub", a collection of tracks from those compilations. their original creators span genres and countries, but are all united by their love of large basslines, skanking rhythms and dubbed out beats. to celebrate we will be running a competition of sorts. we have two rather unusual prizes: jigsaws of the original artwork for "mashing up creation" and "dubbed on planet skunk" (created by the amazing fractal billy). how to win? well, please email us and tell us the names of 5 of the people whose faces/likenesses are on the wall of the alien's studio that is on the cover of "dubbed on planet skunk". names will be drawn on monday june 21st. in the meantime, you can check out tracks by doof, woob, tribal drift, 100th monkey and more at last.fm.

hope you enjoyed it. putting together the next edition at the moment. but, closer to home comes the second in our series of timely re-issues. next tuesday (april 6th) we will be releasing the amazing "within the office of eye and ear" album by stress assassin. originally out on spiral trax in 2002, it swiftly found its way into dj boxes round the world. sadly the label ended in 2005, so now we are making this album available digitally for the first time. to celebrate the release, we have just posted on soundcloud a dubwise mix by eric narcochill. finally, for those of you in london or the uk, third ear audio, doof and myself are playing at acid monkeys this weekend -

15 years .... on a Dubmission
crazybaldhead replied to crazybaldhead's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
next week sees the first in a series of re-releases that we have scheduled for this year: bluey's "oceans unknown". originally released back in 2000 on golden bay records, it was hailed as one of the best new zealand produced ambient records of the decade. a journey into all things deep, downbeat and dubby, the album opens with the epic, rhythm and sound-esque title track, which has been a crowd favourite every time bluey played live. while just one more and 8m swell are bouncy breaks numbers, and all the time in the world and sticky pond fuse dub and trance, tracks such as skip'n'swing show a more funky side. as bluey puts it himself, "the sound cannot be accurately defined by any well known genre. the tracks contain the inherent originality which comes from using modern technology in such an isolated and stunning place as golden bay". ocean unknown is a record to dream and drift to, a lavishly-textured, warm and weightless technological transmission from the heart of the echo chamber. it’s re-release was long overdue, having been out of print since 2002, and never before available digitally. you can download a remix of the title track for free from bandcamp and get another track in exchange for your email address from bandcamp here. you can preview the whole album at last.fm. gig wise, a few of us are playing in a room at acid monkeys in london on april 3rd: live set from third ear audio, plus dj sets from doof and myself. -
2010 marks 15 years since Dubmission Records was spawned, in a smoke filled shack on Anjuna beach, Goa. Originally an offshoot of Aquatec Records, we have hardly been prolific over the years, but have strived to keep the bassline quality as high as possible. To celebrate making it this far (and there were many times when that didn't seem likely) we are plotting a host of releases and parties throughout the year. We have also asked some of our favourite DJs to create mixes of Dubmission released material, and will be releasing one mix a month for free download. This month's mix is a Pitch Black smorgasboard created by DJ Ti from New Zealand - download from soundcloud . It heralds the release on Monday 25th of the Pitch Black remix EP's Harmonia Pt.I & II. These can be previewed at Last.FM or bought from all good download stores and Bandcamp . We are also hosting a room this Saturday 23rd at The 7th Heaven Project party in London, with live shows by International Observer and Kokerboom, plus DJ sets from Crazy Baldhead, Ed Snug and more. Info on that from Facebook More info and links will be posted up on the Dubmission website soon.
