  1. Happy to announce the release of the first installment of remixes of tracks taken from Warp Technique’s stellar debut, “Make Animals Happy” ~ the "Make" EP is out on December 14th. First up is Australian producer, Sensient, who has been making a name for himself with his Zenon label, home to Tetrameth and Shadow FX, amongst others. Next to weigh in is dub maestro International Observer, who strips the track back to its reggae roots, adding some of his trademarks sounds along the way. Then Berlin’s A Bear Called Wellington and New Zealand’s Misled Convoy provide two ambient excursions with their versions. Finally Warp Technique’s remix of Pitch Black’s “Sonic Colonic” is added on, since this stellar remix was overlooked amongst the plethora of tracks released by them as part of the “Rhythm, Sound & Movement” campaign. You can preview all the tracks at http://www.last.fm/music/Warp+Technique/Make+EP. In response to previous requests we have put the EP up for sale at http://warptechnique.bandcamp.com/, which allows you to buy in almost all formats at a reasonable price.
  2. The long awaited Third Ear Audio album finally drops today on Dubmission. A collaboration between Celli “Earthling” Firmi and Nick “Doof” Barber, it successfully marries their influences and styles to create a perfect blend of space, bass and beats, with an added dose of playful mischief thrown in for good luck! The album is very much a dub sandwich, opening with two lounge pieces, full of seductive synths and sultry sounds, designed for sofa surfing smoking sessions. The middle tracks – the “meat” of the album – are a trio of dubwise delights: all deep skanks, heavy basslines and reggae riddims, peppered with quirky samples and produced immaculately. The final four are perhaps more what you would expect from this dastardly duo, as they flirt with, but do not commit to, the trance world, containing sunkissed elements of progressive and psy, as well as touches of breaks, house and minimal techno. Finished several years ago, this album seemingly managed to bankrupt every label it touched until now, with the previous 2 prospective homes going belly up just before release. Thankfully it has finally seen the light of day, as it a perfect summer album. You can check out all the tracks at www.myspace.com/thirdearaudio. The album is available from all good download and online stores, plus direct from the label at www.tinyurl.com/dubstore for £6.49 +p&p.

  6. Better known as one half of multi-media outfit Pitch Black or producer for Salmonella Dub, Paddy has finally released his own solo album. Subtitled “The Language of the Land”, Karekare is a collaboration with Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments) specialist Richard Nunns, which marries electronica and Maori music to great effect: imbued with the sounds of the bush and native birds, the album has a brooding and sometimes windswept quality that conjures up the environment around Karekare (on the West coast of New Zealand). Thankfully it is not one of those “fusion” albums where the divergent genres sound forced together: it was Paddy's intention that the electronic parts always serve the kaupapa (principle) behind the Taonga Puoro– that nothing be taken out of context, or dominated by the electronic elements. Very much a sonic landscape, the album opens with the mysterious call of flute, before breaking into Lali, a dub drenched growler of a tune. Other stand out tracks include the collaboration with Tiki Taane (formerly of Salmonella Dub and Concord Dawn) Wairua, the drum and bass ‘haka’ Whai Atu and the mournful Kohatu. Karekare reveals itself to be, on repeat listenings, an album replete with tiny details that can easily get lost on a first hearing so please bear with it! You can check out all the tracks in full at http://www.last.fm/music/Paddy+Free, read an excellent review of it at http://www.globalnoize.blogspot.com/ or best of all, download Kohatu for free from either http://www.last.fm/music/Paddy+Free/Kareka...e+Whenua/Kohatu or http://www.myspace.com/paddyfree. Out on Dubmission April 6, through Arabesque Distribution and all good download stores.
  7. One of the highlights from Paddy's new album, Kohatu, is available to download from either of these places: http://www.myspace.com/paddyfree http://www.last.fm/music/Paddy+Free/Kareka...e+Whenua/Kohatu http://www.globalnoize.blogspot.com/ A brief desciption from Paddy: KOHATU is the Maori word for stone or rock. It's a love song! Although one that speaks of a fair amount of pain as well... The song is based on a story from the local Maori of the Waitakere region, about 2 forbidden lovers who seek refuge a cave behind a waterfall. They hide from their pursuers (who are from different Tribes, of course, in the best Romeo and Juliet tradition...) for so long, and the waterfall thunders so loudly, that when they emerge they are deaf. This song is from the woman's perspective, singing of her love for her man. KOHATU was originally part of a live multi-media performance beneath the natural monolith, Lion Rock, at Piha Beach, west of Auckland, NZ. The lyrics were written by my wife, Louise Potiki Bryant, and vocalist Waimihi Hotere.
