Yes religion was a part of every culture, but who is to say that we're better off with a history of having faith in bibidy bop as apposed to actually trying to figure out the truths of our universe earlier in our progression (right... its easier to say god did it). Arguing that christianity contributed so much to our education is a running joke. There is a fundamental difference between misdirection and education. If we could theoretically erase the abrahamic religions from the face of the planet and its history (which would be nice), there is a good chance other more effective educational structures would take its place. Yes christians are less depressed because they were tricked into such a demeanor or too damn stupid to know otherwise. Reality is in some respects depressing and tricking people it is otherwise is in-virtuous. Christians are more helpful/charitable? I guess if you consider charity and running hospitals in Belgium more importation than scientific progress. I assume the people who discovered the cure for malaria, measles, small pox... weren't praying to jesus or who gives a fuck for guidance. The technological revolution wasn't brought about by prayer or good charity Your arguments are just as if not more fragmented than ouro's. I can however acknowledge that religion could have been part of our evolution, just like patriarchy and the male's role to protect and hunt. Perhaps it was a useful tool to keep the masses sane and bring order to the chaos of reality. Spare them from fruitless contemplation. Even if it was a necessary part of our history, we now are at a time where its evolutionary role is obsolete.

Face your death and embrace your remaining time amongst the living. So dogmatic! You're thick, like most indoctrinated folk. I'm done here
-
I guess this is because baptists have varying views. So your morality isn't enforced by threat or reward? What isn't what I wrote? Soldier on I will. Yes, want proof? I haven't said much about my beliefs in the thread either, apart from displaying my distaste towards organized religion. I have no beef with "god" or spirituality.
-
They're wrong about a lot of things. The church has held us back for millennia. Recent examples are stem cell research and LGBT equality. The list goes on. Missionaries used to baptize non-believers and kill them before they renounce the faith. This was done so they can be "saved." Some of you fetishize about the end of times and actively aim to bring it about. Don't forget the witch hunts, those were fun.
-
What are you asking ? Right on. So what one does, according to your belief doesn't impact whether you go to hell or not? If I don't confine my eternal faith in christ then I'm probably going to burn right? There's your donkey and carrot. You calling me dogmatic tickles my pickle. You're right on this one. Ten points for gryffindor?
-
no as in I don't intend on fooling anyone I was joking around, yes such civility. Right baptists don't have preachers. You still believe in Hell, heaven, and salvation... whats the difference? I really don't care enough to distinguish light gray from dark gray, its still damn gray. How exactly am I being hypocritical? What "knowledge" am I missing rotwag. I find it hard to call info about cults knowledge. What am I so blind to?
-
No. Yes. Out with the old in with the new. Yes I was raised Roman Catholic, being baptist isn't a radical change No. But you're exaggerating my statement. When did I say nothing known back then was correct? Trust me its nothing personal. I'm not saying these things to disrespect your beliefs. I see it as an obligation in some respects to help bring about the end of the abrahamic religions(and others) so my children's children don't have to deal with this crap. When I say your type I'm referring to individuals who are indoctrinated into theistic beliefs before they develop critical faculties. Happens to most of us unfortunately.

Yea, well there isn't much more to see than the temples they have around that area anyway. Another good destination is the yucatan peninsula. I usually stay in Playa del Carmen because its a lot cheaper than Cancun. Its also closer to Xel Ha a bay where you can do some badass snorkeling

Religion was used to persuade people that killing was good during the crusades and hundreds of other occasions. "Kill the infidels because they don't believe in and respect our god" etc.... Dumb people are tricked into thinking they're doing good and so on.
-
All one has to do is look at the historical impact of religion. You're right radi, its not supposed to be harmful, its supposed to keep the masses opiated and subservient. Look up prison population religious affiliations and you'll notice that the top three in the States (which holds most of the worlds prison population) are protestant, catholic, and muslim. Atheists are below buddhists and mormons. As for atheists being smarter, I should rephrase my statement. The higher IQ one has the less likely he or she is to believe in god.

What music are you listening to right now?

Nice i'm digging this one. -
I know you don't have a strong argument against me but that doesn't mean you have to attack me personally. Lets keep it civil ok? Enlighten me on how I'm acting like an extremist? Statistically atheists are smarter and less likely to become criminals. Your rapists preachers spread a binary worldview and threaten your every move with the flaming pits while encouraging you, like a donkey with a carrot, to be good with promises of eternal bliss. You agree with the halfwits who lived before the invention of the lightbulb. A time where the literacy rate was no more than 30%. They must have had it all figured out right?
-
The foundation of your worldview isn't based on logic, so I have no expectation of your rhetoric to exhibit it. The basis of my posts isn't off a crackpot video, its off of my whole life's experience, education... As I've already said I acknowledge that we simply can't know whether god exists. What vital information am I rejecting because of my confirmation bias? Arguing with fundies and extremists, regardless if atheist or theist, is akin to yelling at a brick wall. What is your point? Sand in your vagina or what?
-
I'm no biblical scholar either, however I was raised Roman Catholic and have a first hand experience of faith in god etc.. You're very eager to disprove anything not supporting your worldview. You seem clever enough yet when it comes down to it you're a baptist and your type is notorious for dogmatic beliefs. I have no intention of swaying your worldview or anything, but going around calling things baseless while (even though that one video may have been) believing in this load of lunacy is some what ironic.
