  1. Label: Inpsyde Media Date: 07-21-02 By: Mars Q: How & when did your Inpsyde Media adventure start ? A: It could sound strange, but the idea of Inpsyde Media started thanks to Psynews.org global site. I personally loved the Contest idea starting an new label meant let see the light the to contest's idea, after this release we started to build the structure and upcoming plans for the newcomer label and now we are in full force. Q: How did you choose the name Inpsyde Media ? A: This name came to my mind above all considering the way I usually listen to Trance music : every time I feel that sounds and music conquer me and enter in my mind and in my body. So which could be the best "word" to explain this : Inpsyde = Inside mixed with Psychedelic I've decided to add the word Media above all because our goal is offer and sell music, so this should be consider a Media and a Connection between people in this wonderful world. Q: Could you describe us the style of trance you want to favour to be released under your label? Do you favour a particular country in the musical orientation of your label? A: We simply would like to offer the most innovative and quality of Trance nowadays but not forgetting about our origins, this is the reason we decided to start also a kind of sub-label called "Inpsyde Reissue" where we'll try to reissue all forgotten pearls of the Trance history. Q: Could you give us a general survey of the main artists who currently release stuff under your label? A: We've released the first contest compilation full of newcomer artists from all over the world, we have a good relationship with a lot of artists around. Promon is our first full lenght album and we strong believe in their music approach and innovative sensations. Q: How do you see the future & growth of your label? What new records will you release? A: We are working hard on a new international compilation which will be out at the end of October, early November and will include artists such as : Jahbo, Triplex, Etack, Somatic, Psy XS and others. As Inpsyde Reissue we'll have planned three Blueroom albums : Total Eclipse "Delta Aquarids", Kox Box "Dragon tales" and X-Dream "Radio". We have just released the Etnica "Alien Protein". Anyway big surprises will happen within the end of the year. Stay tuned ! Q: What artists would you like to work with? A: I like a lot Paransense, Sebi-exGMS, Psyside, Serge (TE), Synthetic and others. Q: Is there another particular label you appreciate a lot for its musical orientation? A: I like very much a lot of newcomer label full of fresh ideas and artists such as : ACIDANCE, DOOF, APOXINA, NEUROBIOTIC, SUB MACHINE, TURBO TRANCE. Q: Do you organize parties with your label? A: At the moment not, but we are seriously thinking to do that maybe the next summer when our label's artist rooster will be completed Q: What do you think about the psy-trance scene globally? How do you think it's evolving? A: I think Trance scene nowadays is really powerful and innovative and a growing number of "intelligent-dance" people are enjoying the new movement of modern trance. I see a lot of new artists around ready to offer a increasing number of quality tracks. Also modern technical equipments will help all talented artists to evolve their feeling into a top quality Trance music. yes of course Mp3 traders are slowly damaging some labels and artists as well but I think true lovers of music will ALWAYS need to have original cds with original artworks and full quality sound. For all those people who is enough to have and trade Mp3 songs I could say that they're not music lovers... but simply collectors of sounds withou any respects for all artists' efforts and music feelings. So I do not care about them. For me is always a big surprise when I buy original cds and vinyls above all because I feel a complete synergy with artists and labels deep feelings and I truly enter in what they want to communicate. Enjoy this way ! Q: What do you think about the psy-trance scene globally? How do you think it's evolving? A: I hope the modern Trance movement will grow in the future offering talented artists and motivated labels who strongly believe in their passion for Music !
  2. Artist: Infected Mushroom (Erez) Date: 10-18-00 By: Infected Max Q: How and when did you start to make Goa ? A: I started at 1995 when i was 15 years old, in the group called "Shidapu" Q: Do you project to release a new album ? When would it be released ? A: We are planning to release the 3rd "infected mushroom" at Feb2001 (B.N.E Records) Q: What about I-zen? Do you plan a whole album? A: There is actually a secret plan to make an izen album, but my main goal is working with duvdev actually, the main investment is infected. i work on "izen" only on my free time, when duvdev cant come. Q: Cat On Mushroom album? A: I hope it will happen, Avi (SpaceCat) is very busy, we are also quite busy working on the "infected" album. I'll start annoying avi after our album. Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? why? A: Hard One, he he. Emmm, I like the most these days atrack named "B.P.Empire". its hard nighty/Techno one whith a silly kick. i cant explain actually why i like it,,, its very simple track but powerfull. (BTW, it will be on the next album for sure!!!) Q: Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? A: Ok, Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger, its just the best album made ever. and the work on it,small details ... i think even today its still the best. Q: Other "NOT TRANCE" artists you love? A: "Dream Theater", they also kinda psychodelic , not for the dance floor but, just listen to it about 10times and you will understand. listen to their last album, "Metropolis Part 2", And "Awake" Q: Tell us your recipe to make a good Infected Track ? A: First you go to akko and you ask "where is Sa'eed" he is the best HUMUS artist. its actually unreleased artist, making a very underground psychodelic HUMUS. after you eat that you are on a special trip that i cant really explain. then we(duvdev and me) drive back to the studio, and thats the secret. Q: What kind of equipment do you exactly use to make your Tracks ? A: The "Classical mushroom" album we used mosty NordLead-1,Juno106,Solton MS50, Gina(soundCard),Cubase 3.7,Akai S3000xl(sampler),Dopfer System100,and PLUGINS!!! we didnt use effect machines at all. BUT TODAY We got a new MultiEffect called "Orvill/Eventide"/ a New convertor of the analog machine,"Dopfer a-100", and new distortion "Line6-Pod Pro", ho, also "Lyla 24 soundcard" i belive that the sound of the next one will be better then the second and the first album. Q: Future projects ? A: There is another plan to make an ambient album on a DVD Dolby Surrond,(Ac3) format. i dont know if it will happen Q: Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? A: Simon Posford,John Petrucci,Maddona Q: What kind of stuff do you play as DJ in parties ? A: Infected/Dado/Cosma/Yahel/SpaceCat/X-Dream/DarkSoho/Atmos/ Thats the style +/- . Q: When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? A: The best for now i think its SweeserLand, 7-oct,2000 . The worst, i think was in israel "Tzemah beach at teberia, night of love, someone from the orgenizers had to stop the music, and the people were thinking that we stoped the music, so they were throing on us STONES and Bottles(glass bottles), it was not a good expirience. Q: Something to say to people who wanna make music? A: If you know to play on something, Just make music, Give it a try, its not that complicated. you dont need equipment to do music, there is lots of softwares that are sounding exactly like a real synth sometimes its even better. Q: Something to say to ur fans? A: 1.Dont throw on us stones if we stop the music,(its usually not our fault) 2.Keep having an open mind, for listening to new things. (even if its not typical trance) 3.Go easy with Drugs, I saw quite alot of people that today are not the same.
  3. Artist: Indidginus Date: 08-14-01 By: Anoebis Q: Hello Indidginus, and thanks for doing the interview! You're still unknown in the goa-scene, so tell us, how would you describe your music? A: Hello Joske Indeed ,as you say, I am a relative unknown to the goa scene. I am, however, notorious on the Ngorongoro Crater drum and bass circuit. And Colin has been around as "OOOD" since 1996. Josh is a renowned musician in South Africa (and hopefully soon here, Europe, the world!), and Paul is a member of the North London massive. It's a bit strange answering these questions on my own as the aforementioned Indidginus contributors are not present. However, I will take it upon myself to answer for them. I'm sure they won't mind Our music could be described as: A mongrel cross-breed of organic, melodic (occasionally veering towards hard and psychedelic - depending on what kind of day we've had) trance, fusing electronic voodoo with live didgeridoo, percussion and bass guitar. Or, in a word, ropey. Colin: "Michael is absolutely right". Paul: "Couldn't agree more". Josh: "As always, Michael took the words right out of my mouth". Q: How, why and when did you start to make music ? A: I've been playing didg for about 5 years or so now, and been improvising with DJ's/live PA's for about 3 of those. I've only recently started to make tracks from scratch myself (I didn't have enough money to buy my own equipment previously!). I wanted to play didg since I was 18. I was travelling around Australia at that time and saw an Aboriginal busker playing in Sydney harbour. He blew me away. I had never heard another instrument like it. At that time (1990) it was not nearly as commonplace as it is now in Europe. Nowadays it seems that everyone and his/her dog has either a didg or a djembe in tow! As for how (nothing like answering your questions backwards), my setup is a small one. I have an Akai S2000 sampler, a Behringer Eurorack mixing desk, a Virus Indigo keyboard, a Delta 66 soundcard, a Midiman 2 * 2 USB midi box and a good PC (running at 900 Mhz, 640Mb RAM with 2 hard drives (20Gb and 4Gb), a decent but inexpensive Sony amp, and some dodgy monitor speakers that I've borrowed off Paul (I think he actually did get them off the back of a lorry). I also have a couple of didgs lying about (obviously) - one is made out of draingage pipe, another is a Eucalyptus beauty, and I have one that was made using a lathe (although it's held together with gaffer tape now!). The slide didg was given to me as a gift (I couldn't have been given a better present!) and I use that one for playing live as it makes it easier to key in to other instruments/music. Q: Why did you decide to make Psy-Trance ? A: My mum told me to. And because I enjoy the freedom that this style of music brings to those who produce it. I also felt that I could make a positive contribution through that medium, even if it only lasted for the duration of a set! Q: What music and artists do you like the most? And did any of them inspire you to make music ? A: I have many and varied tastes. I started out life as a bit of a rocker liking bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Henry Rollins (to name a few). I was (and still am) also keen on funk music with the likes of James Brown and Parliament gracing my CD collection. But as I became older and wiser I found solitude in acid techno (I found the Liberators particularly inspiring in this genre), and from there I branched out into hard house for a while (which helped my culinary skills immensely), and into trance where people like GMS, Delta and Infected Mushroom have given me something to aim for. A couple of years ago I had a chance encounter with "Impact" (the drum and bass live PA I also play for) in a recording studio, and they gave me an education in the delights of that style. And not forgetting my friend Graham Wiggins (aka Dr Didg). I met Graham a few years ago through him doing a gig for me to help raise money for a charity project I was involved with in East Africa. He is a top bloke and an amazing didg player who has given me no end of motivation to improve my own playing. Q: Which is your favourite Psy-Trance artist & song, and what is your favourite song of yourself ? A: I am Mary, Mary quite contrary, so my favourite artist and song change every few weeks (months if they are really good). At present my favourite artist is "Juno Reactor". A friend lent me a copy of "Shango" - his new album featuring the Xhosa dance troupe Amapondo. When I played at the Lizard Eclipse Festival a couple of years ago, they played too and unleashed a superb set fusing live instrumentation, computer generated sounds and a fantastic stage show. All elements that I wholeheartedly approve of (nice one Mr Reactor). My favourite track from that album is "Pistolero" which makes use of Flamenco guitar and is, in my opinion, highly innovative. Also, Colin and Steve ("OOOD") have produced some storming tracks that I very much enjoy listening to, and would recommend to everyone They are presently in the process of compiling tracks for a new album. There, plug over. My own favourite track is the one that I am busy finishing off now - it's called "Flux" and also has an African slant to it. Josh and I thought it would be appropriate to write a track that reflects our affinity (Josh is South African, and I lived in Africa for around 9 years) with that area of the world. Or rather, I thought it would be a good idea - I'm putting words into Josh's mouth as he's not here! I've submitted "Cosmic Caroline" (written by Colin and myself) and "Cosmic Caroline" to your competition and hope to be doing the same with "Flux" when it's done Q: What do you think of the future of Psy-Trance? And how will the music change ? A: The future is orange. Hopefully the music will feature more live instrumentation (I'm big on that, you might be able to tell), as I believe that this adds an atmosphere to a set that can otherwise be lacking. Q: Where does you inspiration come from (except music) ? A: My inspiration comes from the great outdoors. I would much rather play a free party than a club. Some of my most defining moments have come whilst on walkabout by myself in the middle of nowhere in places like Tanzania and New Mexico. Certain people have definitely been very influential for me too. Q: Are there any groups you will work with together in the future ? A: I am currently working with an ambient live PA called "Squeeker" - they produce really good stuff and are nice people to boot! It looks like I will be working with Gilles ("Toi Doi") in the near future when he returns from a tour of Canada, and Marcus ("Tara Putra") when he gets back from travelling around India. I have also been speaking to Jonaz from "Logic Bomb" with a view to fitting some didg onto a track or two of their forthcoming album. I'm always open to offers Q: Are there any plans of releasing tracks/an album ? A: Benny from 140bpm has said that he would like to include "Cosmic Caroline" on a compilation CD that he plans to release later this year. Simon Posford has also hinted that he would like to offer us a 10 album deal (just kidding. Although, have a think about it Si, you know it makes sense!). My focus at the moment is to get an album worth of good material and then to punt that around to some labels. At present, I've only got a couple of finished tracks! With luck, someone out there will like them enough to release them! Q: What do you do when you're not making Trance ? A: Um, sleep! After I've finished with my job (at the moment, I masquerade as a software developer by day. But as I seem to change jobs with remarkable regularity, who knows what I'll be doing in the future!), practicing my didg and messing about in the studio, I don't have much time for anything else! I do occasionally take time out to get tattooed though… And the drum and bass also keeps me busy.
  4. Artist: Hux Flux Date: 04-03-02 By: Caio Q: How and when did you start to make Goa ? A: Back in...hmm 98 maybe after taking far too much acid. =) I just had to do something with the weird stuff i had in my head. Q: Do you project to release a new album ? When would it be released ? A: Yes. New album is coming on Spiral Trax. Probably in September, it was supposed to be out in november 2001, but in august last year my son was born 3.5 months prematurely (means too early), he was only 868 grams and his lungs got some serious problems of the early entrance - He almost died of this. We literally lived at the hospital for 7 months, not really inspiring u know. But now he is home and is perfectly fine, definetely the best thing that happened in my life even if the start was a little too much =) It will probably get finished before september, but its not a good idea to release an album in the summer according to Anti (Spiral Trax). Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? why ? A: Oh, I was pretty happy with "Idiot" for a while, now its one of the new unreleased that comes to my mind. Dont know about Henric, he's not here. Q: Your favourite Groups & Albums ? A: That changes all the time, but Process "One Drop or Two" still sounds very fresh and intelligent. Other favourites is KoxBox, Hallucinogen etc. Q: What kind of equipment do you exactly use to make your Tracks ? A: Logic Audio Platinum, Monopoly,.sh-101, Virus, Waldorf Pulse, some other synths and outboard FX. We mix on a Eurodesk MX 8000, but we tend to do more and more inside Logic... And ofcourse we use a lot of software for sounds and effects, only a moron would choose to not do that nowadays. Q: Is there any artist you'd like to work with ? A: Heh, i dont know, we get so weird in the studio after smoking too much so i dont know if someone who dont really knows us could take it. hehe. But we will probably do something with Johan and Jonas P (Logic Bomb) later on. Q: When & where was your best party ? A: The best was in Kilsbergen, Örebro here in Sweden. The worst.....no idea. Q: Something to say to people who wanna make music ? A: Hello, how do you do ? Q: Something to say to ur fans ? A: That we are eternally greatful for their support and we love to see them freak out on the floor. But we dont like when ppl ask for autographs, it feels like that its not a part of the trance scene. Its not that we get angry, we just feel stupid. =) Q: Any question I forgot ? A: Sure u did, but i dont remember which
  5. Artist: Hujaboy Date: 04-09-01 By: Chaitu Q: Can you tell me a little about yourself to get to know you better ? A: I am 25 years old, currently living in Jerusalem Israel and working as a sound engineer but my main interest in life is music. Q: Why did you choose the name Hujaboy for one of your projects ? A: Cause wonderboy and yonderboy were already taken. Q: How did you discover trance, and what influenced you to start producing this genre of music ? A: Back in 1992 I went to a party at a place called Givat olga dj Miko was playing. A small piece of paper with a little bannana on it did the rest. I have started producing about 4.5 years later, music has always played an important part in my life. My motivation was actually an addiction to trance and deep love for this genre. Q: Do you listen to other styles of music besides trance? Anything out there you'd like to reccomend ? A: Yes, I love Leftfield, Orbital, Depeche Mode ,Alice In Chains I recommend all of them. Q: What equipment are you using ? A: I am using a PC with a Creamware power sampler card, Cubase-5, Wave lab 3.1, Vaz modular and lots o' pluginz. Q: Do you play DJ sets ? Can you tell us your current favourite tracks ? A: Yes I do play Dj sets almost every week. My favs are : 1-Atmos-Random landlord 2-Hujaboy-Champ n' check 3-O'cheese-InSpectre 4-Synthetic-cyclone 5 5-Hujaboy-Counting spirals to fall asleep 6-MOS-kommdas 7-Midi Miliz-info 8-Hujaboy-ska 9-Synthetic-100 pure 10-Hujaboy-Ha mad an Q: Any best/worst party experiences, both in and out of Israel ? A: Worst party experiences were : 1-The first police raid on party in Israel it was in Ramat gan at the Impulse club a friend of my got arrested and lots of people got bad trips. 2- X-mas in the bamboo forest 95 bad bAD BBBBAAADD FLIP. Best parties, I have loads of them but one of the very best was a few days after the x-mas incident at Arambol beach in goa. I think Rictam and Banzi played there. It was on a beutifull hill, on one side was the sea and on the other was a forest. Q: Are you going to be releasing an album in the near future? Any exciting collaborations (like the Gorlation Corporation one) we should look forward to ? A: Well, I am working on my album. I have made about 20 new tracks and it is so much fun doing it. I believe when I will get to 30 tracks then I will pick the best for the album. I am also working with my Brother Tal on an electro project that is called O'cheese, the first track will be released on Hadsot Haheizar compilation "The devil is a DJ". And a video clip for a Hujaboy track. Q: Do you feel a good computer + software is in itself enough to produce good music, and if a guy is hard working and skilled - he can do a lot with just this (and a lot of plugins). How necessary is hardware in todays music ? A: Well I am using only a computer an software, I think it's enough if you are hard working and don't have the money to buy equipment. The best way in my opinion is to use both, because the technology is not quite there yet there is still a gap between software synths "fatness" and hardware. To get the hardware sound through software, you have to work hard very hard. Q: And lastly, how do you feel about the trance scene in Israel and wordlwide, and the progression of electronic music in general ? A: In the last year trance in Israel came back to the underground which I think is great. cause it took the fucking police of our backs and the kinda people that come to parties are much nicer. Regarding the progression of music, a great thing is happening because until a year ago I was sure everything is stuck, but when trance has started crossing over with House, Dub, Techno it has progressed a bit which I think is lots of fun.
  6. Label: HOM-Mega Date: 06-28-00 By: Chaitu Q: Ok, to start off with, when and how did the HOMMEGA galaxy come into existence? A: HOMmega Productions was established on October/1997 by me and my best friend Meir Cohen who is the sponsor of the label. We spent a few months on all the permits and "gave birth" to the first HOMmega CD - the first Full On compilation. Soon after we Joined Moshe Keinan(a.k.a Xerox) as our third partner and studio manager and moved our headquarters from main city - Tel Aviv to peaceful village - Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, located 10 minted drive from Tel Aviv. Q: Can you give me a brief history of the growth of your label over the last few years? And can you describe the type of trance, or better yet;- intelligent electronic music that you favour releasing ? A: HOMmega started as a small label producing compilations and supporting it's only act - Xerox & Freeman. Today our line up includes: Xerox/Freeman/Psy Sex/Yahel/Luminus/BLT/Green House Effect(a.k.a Sandman)/Psy craft... HOMmega CD's are distributed now days to : U.S.A, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Brazil, South Africa, Ibiza, Hungary, Australia, Canada, Portugal...and of course Israel. I am a very open minded DJ and I like releasing every thing that I find to my taste. No matter what style! Q: HOMMEGA's latest compilation Israeliens 2 was the perfect crossover between Israelien and European trance and was more melodic than the the first of the series. Also recently the new Luminus was released and I believe the label soon plan to release 'Hommega's first club trance compilation'..... many feel that these releases might well be 'too fluffy' and not as 'intelligent' as the older more fullon hommega stuff..I think its a new dimension of electronic music which is not confined to only the pyschedelic aspect...What do you make of this situation ? A: Israeli Psychedelic Trance is HOMmega's first and main style BUT we cannot ignore that people no longer commit themselves to one stream of music. The new millennium is an electronic one and people like listening to all sorts of Electro Tunes. From Ibiza Chill-Out to Chemical Brothers. As we intend to extend our catalogue this year, it was a natural decision to expand our variety and not to release every month a new Psy Trance CD which will only compete against it's former release. Q: Hommega Productions organises parties in Israel and worldwide. Is that correct and which is the most successful party that you have ever done ? A: HOMmega is not organizing the parties but it's true that we are involved in many productions world wide. To name A few...Mini Boom Festival in Portugal(M.F.G, Xerox & Freeman, Psy Sex, Passenger, DJ Eyal...) Millennium Party in New York(Astral Projection, Space Cat, Oforia, Xerox, Chakra, SUN Project, Atmos, Deedrah...) Next project - Moon Rain Festival in Hungary - 14-17/7/2000 (Infected Mushroom, Psy Sex, Yahel, Sandman, Diablo, Power Source, DJ Eyal, Absolum, DJ Mael...). As far as domestic parties are concerned, my best party was at 1997 with Tsuyoshi where I played a 6 hours set and he proffered to stay and miss his flight home because he was so happy with the music & the surprise of " hearing an incredible set of high quality tunes that he never heard before " (His own words - Most flattering). Q: As a DJ, what kind of set do you prefer to play and which artists/tracks have you got a strong penchant for at the moment ? A: Well, as I try to play as much Israeli Tracks as I can, I would say that I fit best in the morning. But don't mistake me for a "fluffer"! I play European sets where ever I know it's more appreciated. My Euro-favorites include : Juno Reactor, Tim Schuldt, Hallucinogen, 3D-vision stuff, Bamboo Forest... My ISRA-team is : Xerox & Freeman/Maskalin, Infected Mushroom, Psy Sex, Yahel, Psy Craft... Q: What do you think about 'the current trance scene' in Israel and worldwide ? Do you feel that commercialisation is a good way of keeping the authorities out and at the same time bringing in more income for artists/labels, or will the movement always be 'underground'? A: I think the days of the "underground" are over in Israel. Trance music has left it's mark here since 1990. Today you can hear trance music in Israel on all Radio stations, Public Events, Weddings & Car stereos. It's quite far from being the main trend but know that the largest event is Israel was a 40,000 people demonstration in the middle of Tel Aviv(with permits) - " Give Trance A Chance ! ". Six hours of 3 track sets from the likes of Xerox& Freeman, Mystica, Oforia, Space Cat, Har El, Chakra & Edi Mis, Astral Projection. All this Isra-sound was transmitted into 6 Turbo sound systems. Imagine the energy !!! There is no doubt that an artist should try his luck on different styles of music since Psy Trance is more of a "Spiritual"" interest then an economical one. Today a trance artist has to invest all his album profits(advance & royalties) on keeping up with technology, Buying new equipment and he can never have money left for a living. Q: Israel is know for its very melodic, full on, psychedelic kicking trance. Can you name me your all time favourite albums that have come from your country? A: Astral Projection : Trust In Trance 3 Chakra & Edi Mis : The Promised Land MFG : New Kind Of World Infected Mushroom : The Gathering Xerox & Freeman : Human Race Q: The recent collaboration with Passenger under the name 'Emuna' was a club trance act enriched with caressing melodies but with a modern kick. Are you currently producing any more music, and if so, is it going to incorporate the more darker and psychedelic elements or will it still be a 'club trance experience' ? A: Emuna is a Club music project. It's members are me and Guy Zukrel(Passenger, M.F.G). This album is very "user friendly" and does not stand in the same line with the other HOMmega releases. We are hosting a lot of artists in our studio and we enjoy "experimenting" all kinds of "intelligent dance floor music". Today I am very busy with producing and have less time for creating. Q: And lastly, what can we expect from Hommega Productions in the future ? Do you have any killer artist album/compilations in the pipelines which will soon surface to kill us all:) ? A: HOMmega releases for the rest of 2000 are : * U.F.S 2 - " Psychological Disorder "(Future Prophecy, Psy Sex, Infected Mushroom, Gorlation Corporation, BLT & Psy Craft, Space Cat, Maskalin, Sinister Funk and Oforia...) * A new series of journey compilations served by Israel's finest(Vol.1 by Xerox - new tracks from... Xerox & Freeman vs. Liquid Metal, Xerox feat. Passenger, Maskalin, Psy Craft, Infected Mushroom, BLT, + some gems from Double Dragon, Spirallianz, Element, Purple & Lunar) * Yahel's second album - " Waves of Sound " * Clubber - The official Israeli Deep Trance & Club Trax compilation(2XCD) (Domestic, Freeze(a.k.a Psy Sex), Future Prophecy, Yahel & I.zen, Infected Mushroom, Sleeper(a.k.a Jaia), Asura, Sinister Funk, Green House Effect, DJ Goblin, Xerox, Emuna, Trivia, Xerox feat. Duvdev and more...) * BLT's second album - " Presence " * Psy Craft's (a.k.a Cybel) debut album * Green House Effect's (a.k.a Sandman) debut album * Mental Orange - Debut Ambient album - the Israeli Shpongle(?) * " Mystic Moments " - The first Israeli Ambient compilation (Oforia, Psy Sex, BLT, Members of Wah vs. Space Cat, Mental Orange...) ( Hot from the press... ) A psychedelic Trance compilation is being compiled for a big label in the U.S.A - KINETIC(distributed by WARNER Bros.) New & unreleased tracks from Kox-Box, Total Eclipse, GMS, X-Dream, Infected Mushroom, Oforia, Yahel, Psy Craft...) Release Date - September 2000. First Edition - 50,000 copies(!!!).
  7. Artist: Healer Date: 02-09-01 By: Danger Q: When did you start making psytrance ? A: I started to make music about 18 years ago, and I started my trance project about -95. This has not alwyas been trance, it started as ambient and somewhere along the line it slowly grew into trance... Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best (12 Moons and Healer) ? A: I haven´t got a personal favorite in that manner of speaking, there is a story behind all my tracks, so there is different feelings and thoughts behind them all and I can´t really say which one I like best. But some of the stories are really good, and the tracks related to them are good, tracks like: Beyond Infinity, Zero Gravity, I Can Eat Monster Too (Tinnitus) and the whole Healer album. Q: Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? A: I really don´t listen to much to music in this genre, I mean ofcourse I listen to trance but I don´t really get into the psytrance. there is just a few tracks and albums that I really like, as the TIP - Phosphoresence comp, that´s REALLY good! And then there is X-Dream´s Radio album, that´s a great album, nice production and very good harmonies in the mix with hardbeating drums and percussions. just a perfect mix... But I like the more dark trance stuff, like the Delta Scizoeffective album (yet again X-Dream guys)... And there are so many talented people out there so it´s really hard to point out a few single ones, but the 3 albums I mentioned are the ones that I think makes a real difference... Q: Where does your inspiration come from ? A: My inspiration... hhmmm.... that´s a tricky one. I have alot of influence coming from different aspects, one of them being when I go to parties and come home, I´m always filled with great ideas and filled with an enormous lust for making a good track, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn´t... Another source of inspiration is based upon a more personal level, where I am influenced from things that happen directly to me. Things like places I visit, people I meet and things I see or hear... Q: How do You build up a track ? A: It´s always different, there is no way of building a track from A to B, it´s always different. Like when I made Ohmpfh, I started with the first low kick and the bass, then came the strange, detuned percussions and then the track grew from there... Beyond Infinity started out as an ambient track, and I used an old ambient track as a foundation to build this new track. In fact, there is a melodie in the intro of Beyond Infinity which I made a long time ago... (15 years ago I made this ambient track , it was not really great, but for some reason, that single melodie stuck inside my head, and it came out when I was doing the Beyond Infinity track, and it works just perfect in there). So, I don´t really have a straight line of building up a track, sometimes it starts with a few pads and harmonies, and somtimes it starts out with kick and bass, or just some percussions, sometimes there is something else... Q: What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? A: At the moment I have only a few synths (Roland JV80, JV880, Clavia Nordrack2, Yamaha YS200, Yamaha TG33, MAM MB33), I also use Akai S1000 sampler, but this is soon going to be changed to a K2000 from Kurzweil... The effect-processors I use at the moment (Zoom 1201 (two of them) for reverbs, Zoom 9001 (also two of them) for delay´s and a Virtualizer from Behringer. I work with a G3 Macintosh (the old grey one) running Cubase VST 4.1 and Peak 2.10. I use 32-channel Soundcraft Ghost mixerdesk, which is a very good mixer for doing both trance and ambient, very warm and rich in dynamics. As monitors I use the Absolute 2 from Spirit. Q: Future projects, new tracks, probably an album from 12 Moons ? A: Actually my future plans are a little bit secret at the moment, but I can say that an album is planned and coming sometime this year. Part from that, there is a few new singles coming soon, and maybe, just maybe, an ambient track or two. ;-) And some more liveacts are coming up this year as well... The 12moons singles on schedule right now are these: Blind Mans Vision / Northern Star - Dragonfly Records (Spring 2001) the Voyage / the Circle Movement - Transient Records (Spring 2001) Hunting Demons / Igg & Okk - Digital Structures (April 2001) Other 12moons tracks coming soon: Funky Chunky - Hadshot compilation (spring 2001) Elak Jävel - Krembo compilation (2001) Healer tracks coming up: Aqua Sleeping - MPDQX compilation (spring 2001) Q: Is there any artist you'd like to work with ? A: Well, it would be cool to work with some other artists but right now there is little time for colabs, so maybe in the future... I spoke to Atmos about doing an ambient track together, and he thought it was a cool idea too. Since we live neighbours this may happen real soon and the track will probably submerge later this year... And I would really enjoy working with Magnus Lindberg (http://medium.to) , who is the man behind the acts Yeadeau, Serilou and Tienares. This guy is one of my closest friends and he makes hard, nasty trance as well as flowing ambient, so it would be good fun making a track with him. Magnus is currently releasing a trance-single on the label Fleebite, check it out... ;-) Q: How much time do You spend in Your studio and does it give something special mentally ?? A: Since I have my studio in my flat I try to be in my studio most of the day. But sometimes I spend a week or two in the studio, don´t go outside, hardly eat or sleep, and then sometimes I don´t work for one week at all. It varies from time to time... As far as the mental aspect is concerned, being in my studio is a release for my excursions in the direction of sound that I am in constant persue of... So, yes, this is why I make music, if it wasn´t for the emotional feedback it brings me, I wouldn´t do this... But luckily for both you and me, I enjoy what I do... (most of the time anyway, sometimes it can be hard to handle a situation when sad things happens. Just recently my beloved grandmother very suddenly passed away, and the outcome of that tragic incident was the track "the Voyage". That track is dedicated to her and that´s one of the many stories behind my music)... So, mentally things can be real hard as well as pure joy.
  8. Artist: Har-Ell Date: 02-17-01 By: Chaitu Q: Can you talk to me about your musical background. When did you start producing electronic music, and what inspired you to start dealing with the genre. A: I had started producing electronic music in 1989 at the end of the industrial scene, where I had several tapes of early techno acid produced and sold in limited edition at a club I used to work as a DJ At the beginning of '93 me and a friend, also a musician had an idea to start and produce acid & trance for cd compilations and to sell tracks for vynil companies such as "Labwerks", Germany. I was influenced by Cabaret Voltaire, Coil & Clock DVA in the beginning of my music. I was considered the first Israeli who produced Trance music in Israel. My works were recorded to famous DJ's around the scene who played my trax in Full Moon parties in India. You can check my site for all the work which was coming out then: www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/1813 I am searching now for new fresh sounds which will lead to new dimensions in the electronic music. Q: California Sunshine has now released 5 great albums. The last one, 'Wonderland', made me feel was a fusion of old CS stuff and new, more club oriented music. Do you project to release a new album , and if so what style will you be looking to manifest? A: Right now I don't work with my partner to California Sunshine. I am working now on an album which is supposed to be a new style of sounds and different from the California series. More nightish melodies and dawn sounds much more acidic, I assume. Q: I also beleive you are collaborating with Dardasm to produce an album together. Can you talk more about this project. A: Well, a few tracks were recorded under Har-ell & Dardasman. However I am working now on a new project under the title "Brainflower" (Har-ell P. & G.F.H.). I have no intention at the moment of working with Dardasman, this was just an experimental project. Q: Which of your albums/tracks do you have a special feeling for? And which other artists styles are amongst your favourites, in your personal taste, Israel and worldwide? A: I think that "Summer '89" from the first California Sunshine was my favorite because everyone here and around the world loved that tune. It was also, as you must know, on a Paul Oakenfold 12" on Perfecto. Also the track "Wonderland" which was one of the first goa acid track because of the minimal and strong atmosphere and had a unique sound. The sound of Wonderland was 5 years ahead of its time compare to other artists back then. I also think that "Alala" was a massive hit in Israel and Goa Full Moons along with all the other trax I made. But the style is changing, the melodies are deeper and the groove is deeper too. The album I have the most feeling for is "Nasha" which I believe its concept was the best and it was the most complex of all the others in the series. Q: California Sunshine;- For most trancers this is melodic and emotional music, and the very essence of goa. The sun shines in the music- Is this the aim in your musical style? A: This aim was in California Sunshine. Now my aim is changing as I said before, more deep melodies , dark sounds and stronger grooves together with some morning sounds. Q: Where and when was your best party? A: The best party I played in was in Australia, Japan & Mexico. Those parties were Full Moon and outdoor , very very nice people too! Q: Do you feel that commercialisation of trance is a good way of keeping the authorities out and at the same time bringing in more income for artists/labels, or will the movement always be 'underground'? A: I think it is becoming bigger right now, especially in the U.S.A but compared to material such as on MTV or the House scene it still quite underground, to my regret. Q: Being one of the veterans and pioneers in the scene, how do you feel about the progression of electronic music, in israel and the world, now and beyond?! A: I think it is becoming as big as rock with great potential of becoming bigger, I hope!!!
  9. Artist: Hallucinogen Date: 04-20-02 By: Damion Brown Q: Well, first up - welcome. Where are you and what are the vibes like ? A: I am at home. it is late on Saturday night. I'm chilling, watching Jacob's Ladder on TV, gazing out of the window at the stars, and recovering from a big night out in London ... feeling fairly fragile! After this, I'm going to put on 'Music for Airports' by Brian Eno and crash out... Q: Unusual Suspects has just been released on Twisted, and it's awesome... It seems like much more of a "concept album" than a lot out there - Can you give us an insight into the ideas behind its conception ? A: There wasn't really a concept.... but we wanted to release the tracks I'd done over the past few months, and since they are all under different names, a compilation album was the best way. Also, we had some tracks by the other artists on the label that needed releasing, too. As the sound was slightly different from some of the stuff in the past, we decided to try artwork from the 'designers republic'. Q: One of the underlying factors behind Unusual Suspects is the collaborations - which is something the Twisted posse seem to get up to a lot. Is this just fluke that you all work so well together, or do you have to work at it ? A: All the artists involved are good mates, familiar with each others' sound, and totally at ease in the studio, so it was fairly effortless. It wasn't really planned, as such.... I just did a track with whoever was staying at my house at the time! For example, Tristan came down to play frisbee for a couple of days, so we started a track together.....Meanwhile Serge was doing a gig in London, so he came down to chill in the countryside for a couple of days, and he joined us in the studio.... they both had to leave after two days, but Riktaam was coming into town on his way to the states, and he came to stay also... since he flew out the next day, there was little point in starting a new tune, so he got involved in a different mix of the tune that was still sitting in my computer... this was a bit more 'finished' than the one we had rushed out with Serge and Trizzer. Q: Anybody on the scene you're working with on top secret collaborations right now ? A: Whoever turns up next, I guess.... laughs Actually Merv, from Eat Static lives close by, and we keep meaning to do a collaboration... as soon as we both have time. And Ed from Ozric Tentacles called to ask a technical question about the DR16, and we spoke about doing a tune together. On a bizarre note, I have just done a collaboration with Alan Parsons (engineer of Dark Side of the Moon) for his 'Alan Parsons Project'... Q: The Younger Brother tunes and forthcoming single point to good things from this collaboration. What's the vibe in the studio between you and Benji, and what can we expect to hear on the album later this year ? A: Benji is coming over on Monday, in fact, to finish another younger brother track we started last week. I love working with Benji - he is very talented, and a super nice guy.... the vibe in the studio is totally relaxed.... we are both able to have an idea and see it through to completion on the computer... so we just swap seats - one on the sofa, and one in front of the computer - until the other person gets bored. When we both get bored, I destroy him on the Playstation 2! (SSX tricky, mainly).... On the last track we did, we would play Wipeout Fusion, and whoever lost would have to do the arrangement, or the ending or whatever. Q: Are you working on any Hallucinogen stuff as well as the collaborative work ? A: Not really... I have been less inspired when I am at home on my own - I enjoy working with other people a lot more at the moment.... so when I'm alone, I tend to catch up on things - like this interview. Q: You team up with Dimitri as DSP for "Have A Good Time (All The Time)" - what's it like working with somebody more known as a DJ than a producer? Is it a barrier, or is there a greater sense of how the project will be received on the dancefloor ? A: Working with Dimitri was great, 'cos he could always keep a perspective on the track as a whole, while I got involved in the minutae on the computer... and of course he has the DJ skill of knowing what will work on the dancefloor. Q: A personal favourite from the album is Fly Agaric's "I See Myself" with Infected Mushroom. Do you like working with these guys, and is anything more going to come from this collaboration ? A: This was great fun.... they are super guys. we hadn't met before they came over to my house, so we spent a couple of days chilling, with some music in between... and it is interesting to see how they work, combining Erez's computer wizadry and Duvdevs musical expertise. Q: Talking briefly about Shpongle... somebody told me that they heard Tales of the Inexpressible for the first time last November, in he middle of the Arizona Desert, alone for the night, lying on his car bonnet and gazing up at a meteor shower. Which is how music should be experienced! Does it make you feel odd knowing that the shpongle project gets under the metaphysical skin of people all round the world in a non-dancefloor context ? A: It is not really written for the dancefloor... for me it is headphone music if anything... gazing up at a meteor shower would be pretty nice though! Q: Do you enjoy the Shpongle work more than Hallucinogen ? A: In many ways, yes...Musically, there are less rules, so we can do whatever style we choose... we just make what we want to hear. The Hallucinogen stuff is a bit more constrained by the tempo, and the fact that it has to work on the dancefloor. And working with Raja (Ram) is always good fun.... working on my own as Hallucinogen...well, it is harder to surprise myself. Q: Did Raja really fart into the microphone on Are You Shpongled... ? A: Among other things....!! No, not really... most of his noises came from somewhere under the moustache. Q: Next up, we got some questions from the passionate and largely eccentric folk who hang around at the forums on www.psynews.org, a leading international psychedelic trance website. Some of these are silly - but let's go... Bomble from the UK asks: What happened to the relationship with Youth? As far as I know they are not dealing with each other which I find sad seeing as how wonderful their combined work (Celtic Cross) has been. A: We are shortly starting work on a new Celtic Cross album... we haven't seen each other for a while, but had a good chat at Sola Luna festival in Greece, and decided to do a new album for twisted. Q: MK asks: Would you prefer to take a bath in bong water or someone else's saliva? A: Definitely someone else's saliva.... can I choose the person, though? Q: Mike Indidginus asks: How should general purpose glassware be cleaned ? A: With newspaper and vinegar... if using washing up liquid, be sure to rinse in cold water. Q: What kinds of nitrogen are turned into ammonium in a Kjeldahl digestion ? A: Kjeldahl digestion converts organically bound nitrogen in the -3 oxidation state to ammonium. It won't convert nitrite or nitrate to ammonium. Q: What is the meaning of life ? A: 42 Q: If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked ? A: Naked...home is wherever he lays his hat Q: How many ducks would it take to equal the weight of an average human ? A: Less than the amount of pigeons... but more than average dogs....unless they were Chihuahuas... About 3 schnauzers? Possibly 23 Barn Owls.
  10. Artist: Hallucinogen Date: 02-06-01 By: Children Q: How and when did you start to make Goa (and ambient with Raja Ram) ? A: I started making trance in about 1992... before this i was in a psychedelic dub/ambient band called Purple Om ... we started doing a few gigs at raves/acid parties , and hearing the tune 'the age of love' by jam n spoon on a savage acid punch made me want to make dance music. I met raja at butterfly studios when we were both working on separate projects... we got on well together and decided to do some music together... so i worked on some of the T.I.P stuff, but we also wanted to something different, maybe not a dance record, so we did vapour rumours... but i was doing ambient stuff before trance... Q: Do you project to release a new Hallucinogen album after "Live" ? A sequel to "The Lone Deranger" ? When would it be released ? A: Well i don't know when the live album will be released, as all the live recordings are crap... so if i can get a good recording we will put it out. i am also trying to clean them up a bit at home. As for new stuff, i have been busy with the shpongle, but i started some new hallucinogen stuff last week, actually (Jan 2001) so hopefully by the end of the year i should have enough new tracks for an album. Q: Could you describe us the new Shpongle album with Raja Ram ? A: It is a lot more world music than the last album... there is a 'psychedelic latino' track - is that a new category? i don't know if it is more commercial than the last album, but i think it is more accessible at any rate. We used a lot of live musicians.... a couple of singers, a cello player and a gtr player. The album is a much more ecelctic mix than the last one, spanning cultures and genres. Q: Which of your own psytrance and ambient tracks do you like the best ? A: Well i have a soft spot for 'LSD', as it was the first trance piece i was happy with... 'Snarling Black Mabel' i also like... i would be happy to hear music like that on a dancefloor... but my favourite trance track is probably Deranger... i find it psychedelic and squidgy, and musical. To be honest tho', i hardly ever listen to my trance stuff once i have done it, (unless i am DJing it). As for ambient stuff, i think the best piece i have done ever, including any of the trance stuff, is '..And the Day turned to Night'. Normally whenever i finish a track, i immediately see all its flaws, and want to start another tune straight away, thinking "I can do MUCH better than that!!", but once i had the 'day turned to night' on DAT, i was unfeasibly chuffed! it was the first tune i have done that satisfied my artistic urge to create, for more than a week... it wore off eventually tho', hence the new album... Q: Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? A: Pink Floyd- Wish you were here, the wall, dark side of the moon, Ozric Tentacles- Erpland ,Pungent Effulgent, Jimi Hendrix- are u experienced? i suppose those albums have lasted the longest for me... from childhood, thru my teenage years, and even now i listen to them sometimes. As for trance stuff, my taste changes everyday... i have always loved X-Dream, sometimes Juno Reactor, Dado....um... some of the Infected Mushroom stuff is really great, sometimes GMS... and of course the stuff we release on twisted - Tristan, Dado...i really look forward to Benji's album (prometheus). Q: Where does your inspiration come from when building a Track ? A: I always find this a weird question....i guess my life experiences and people around me inspire me... Q: Tell us your recipe to make a good Hallucinogen Track ? A: Well, always try to use the freshest ingredients... Start with a nice juicy Kik Drum (stay away from all that Organic crap.... i prefer mine Genetically Modified to the Max, and hopefully Chemically Enhanced). Meanwhile start the bassline cooking on a high heat...Beat together and whisk the crowd into a frenzy. Mix in all the Fresh Herb you can find. Sprinkle a touch of Flour Power, and Snare Roll into a 4D shape. Hopefully your Filter sweeps will rise nicely. Baste in Love, and add lots of Sauce!! Q: What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? A: Apple mac G3 233Mhz not enough RAM Logic Audio Platinum Mackie 32 8 bus mixing desk Kurweil K2000 keyboard Akai S3200 sampler Akai DR16 hard disk recorder Alesis Quadraverb Ensoniq DP4 FX roland sh101 korg ms 20 and 50 Eventide DSP4000 Q: Future projects ? A: Possibly a Younger Brother album.... a new hallucinogen album... who knows? more of the same, but different... Q: Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? A: Someone who can play the Kora well, or the celtic harp....um.... a good female singer, like Bjork. Q: I've read somewhere that you prefer to make Ambient Tracks . what do you like more on ambient than psytrance ? A: I like the freedom of being able to create any kind of tune without the restriction of a tempo or four-on-the-floor kik drum. There are certain rules you have to follow to make a trance track (ie. between 125 - 160 bpm) otherwise it won't be 'trance'. But 'Ambient' in my mind covers such a wide range that you can do pretty much anything you like. It doesn't have to be a dance track. Q: When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? A: Well i have been to some spectacular locations.... mountains, desert, coast, rainforset .... but i suppose the 'best' depends upon what you actually experience, which can get fairly deranged when certain chemicals are involved.... so i think my 'best' and my 'worst' were probably the exact same party... it was in the english countryside somewhere in oxfordshire... i had been spiked with a ridiculous acid punch, made by some psychopath on day release... and ended up escaping to a poppy field, stampeded by hallucinated wilderbeest, while the party is burned to the ground and the police are rounding everyone up with nets........ and this was just during a breakdown in one of the tunes! When the kik drum came back in i was blown like a leaf back onto the dancefloor, only to be washed ashore 6 hours later........
  11. Artist: Goa Gil Date: 05-10-01 By: Chaitu Q: Gil, how do feel about the progression of Electronic music, from the early days when you relocated from San Francisco to goa, to the millennium and times when there's new trance releases every other week ? A: Having been a musician all of my life and having gone through about every kind of music to get here, I must say that the evolution of our music and how it has slowly mutated with new sounds, new beats, new little twists, and new ideas over the years, has been a very exciting journey; interesting, uplifting, and delicious for the psyche!!! And it just keeps on growing and mutating…. Spiraling up, up, up, up, and away!!! Q: What kind of music were you listening/playing in those days. Did you see the forthcoming trance scene in Goa? How did it come about ? A: When I left San Francisco in 1969, I was of course heavily into the San Francisco acid rock sound of the 60's... when I arrived in Goa in Feb. 1970 I had my guitar and used to write and sing many spiritual songs which I would play on the beach by the fire (or anywhere else!)... Songs like "Mother Earth", "Towards the One", and "God's Children are Everywhere", and there were many, many more !!! We then got some equipment and started djing all night on the beach after the flea market each week and we had our bands, The Anjuna Jam Band and The Big Dipper Band, just to name a couple. I was djing any kind of music at that time, in the mid-seventies, but I still tried to use the music to make a story from first song to last song. In the end of the seventies some of the first "new wave" music with synths and drum machines, like Kraftwerk, started to filter in, but it was in the early eighties when it really started to happen with the new music, and then I went to the west and started to find more of the new sound.... groups like Front 242, Cabaret Voltaire, Tackhead, Yello, Portion Control, Chakk, Laser Cowboys,... There were so many good projects!!! There was so much great music!!! Music that reflected the times we were living in perfectly!!! The combination of the tribal drum patterns with the almost alien sounding synths and samples... it was kind of like... Ancient + Future = Now... so we collected as much of that kind of synthesizer-drum machine music as we could, as we went crazy for that sound!!! But in those days we collected even from Hi NRG, future dance, also stuff like Depeche Mode, New Order, etc., anything that had some good synth & drum machine parts, but we would cut out the singing, take the good parts, and put the tracks back together repeating the different instrumental parts in different sequences to make our own instrumental "Goa" mix that would fit for our party concept and what we were trying to say and do with the music. We did all that with a couple of Walkman professional tape decks!!! Then after some time, some of our friends who visited Goa went back to the west and started to make music that fit our party concept and what we were trying to say perfectly!!! And it has been exploding ever since!!! Q: Can you talk to me about the whole vibe, the transcendental experience? Experiences that people are looking to have at parties. Do you feel religious and spiritual elements are involved ? A: It's probably all how you look at it…. Everyone seems to have a different motivation and concept according to their understanding and programming. For some it can be a spiritual experience, for others they just want to have fun…. So I can only really speak for myself. For me it is the old time religion!!! Since the beginning of time mankind has used music and dance to commune with the Spirit of Nature and the Spirit of the Universe…. We are using Trance music and the Trance Dance Experience to set off a chain reaction in consciousness…. This is what we call "Redefining the Ancient Tribal Ritual for the 21st Century". When I come to the party and set up my alter, sprinkle the Holy Water, recite the Holy Mantra, and make the Offering to the Cosmic Spirit, and then start the music… The music and the whole party becomes an offering to the Cosmic Spirit… May Lord Shiva, Nataraj, Lord of the Dance come to this place and bless everyone. Then the dancers, the music, the dj, the Spirit, all become One. OM NAMAH SHIVAYA !!!!! HARA HARA MAHADEV !!!!! …..Dance… dance is active meditation…. When we dance, We go beyond thought, beyond mind, and beyond our own individuality… To become One in the Divine Ecstasy of union with the Cosmic Spirit…. This is the essence of the Trance Dance Experience. Q: What exactly is "Shamanism" ? Its been practiced since ancient times, in the form of dance and devotion to tribal drums, rhythms and percussion. Today it has been transformed into "techno shamanism" with analog synthesizers capturing all those old vibes with spacey transmissions and visions of the future. Can you enlighten me on this subject ? A: Well according to the encyclopedia, here is the definition of the word "shaman" Shaman "SHAH muhn", is a person considered to have powers that come from direct contact with the supernatural, often in dreams or trances. The term shaman came from a Mongolian word. However, peoples in many areas have shamans who they believe cast out evil spirits or bring good, especially by curing disease. Shamans may be found among the Inuit (sometimes called Eskimos), Maori, Mongolians, Polynesians, and other peoples. American Indians had similar beliefs. By having direct contact with the supernatural, the shaman becomes a channel of the Cosmic Spirit, and uses the music as a vehicle of transmission of Shakti (Cosmic Power and Grace). I have always said that the Goa party is not just a disco under the coconut trees… it is an initiation. But again, it is all how you look at it… And here is where I take the opportunity to suggest to all those up and coming dj's out there that one of the tools that will help you to be centered and focused and help you to do your job much better is Dhyana or Meditation. I feel this is very important!!! If you want to be a shaman (or techno-shaman), then self surrender and some sort of spiritual discipline and practice is necessary. Otherwise you are just playing. Q: What about your travels. Did you learn much from the Kumbha Mela Darshan in India this year? Can you reflect on your time in the Motherland now that you're back in California ? A: My first Kumbha Mela was the Ardh Kumbh at Prayag in January 1971, (please remember that I was Baba Mangalanand even before I was Goa Gil), so it is not new for me, but it is always very, very, very inspiring and uplifting!!! These are the things that we live for!!! We love our time in India, having holy bath, sitting by the holy fire, frequenting ancient temples and tirthas, and having the darshana of the holy saints and sadhus. These are the things that keep us inspired, uplifted, and help us to complete our mission here on this planet. We love Bharat Mata and Ganga Mai, and we are always sad when we must leave that life, and we are always happy when we return. Jai Ma !!! OM NAMAH SHIVAYA !!!!! HARA HARA MAHADEV !!!!! Q: Getting more into the music side of the culture, what kind of stuff do you prefer to play in your sets? Who are your favorite artists ? A: Since I play such long sets, I play quite a variety of psychedelic trance… Early night is a little slower & minimal psychedelic, sometimes even starting ambient, and slowly building up to middle night where it starts to get a bit fuller, harder and faster building into late night… the intensity grows until the last dark of the night where it becomes almost apocalyptical and then when the first light of dawn starts to shine I start to lead it into the full power morning music and then depending on how long the party goes there are a variety of morning and daytime sounds to choose from…. I have always based my trance dance party concept on traditional initiation concepts where, in most ancient traditions, you must first confront the Dark in order to be lead into, and shown, the Light. As for our favorite artists, it changes all the time… one of our favorite artists, who is consistent and has the combination of sounds and beats that we really like, is Hux Flux for example. We also really like the sounds that our friends in Goa, Made in Chapora, have been making in their studio down there… we also like the music of Absolum, Wizzy Noise, Bamboo Forest, Toi Doi, GMS, and Parasense just to name a few. Here is my Divine Dozen for April 2001 1. Made in Chapora - Mahakumbha / Electrojump (DAT) 2. Hux Flux - Lex Rex Perplex / Errorhead (Spiral Trax) 3. Color Drop - Jazz is Dead (DAT) 4. Wizzy Noise - Devils Night (ZMA) 5. Psycho+Trolls - Space Pigz (DAT) 6. Droidsect - Invasion from Outer Space (3D Vision) 7. Parasense - Are You Cloned ? (DAT) 8. Peace Data - Peace Depth (Eskimo) 9. Digital Separatist - Essence (DAT) 10. Hux Flux - Bring Your Own Bios (Creamcrop) 11. In-R-Voice - Mahakala (DAT) 12. MOS - Komm-Das (Atomic) Q: Since you play non-stop all night. Can you tell me how you start your set and progress into the depth of the night, those spacey pre-dawn hours and of course, when the glory of the morning is up, and the sun is shining ? A: Well I think I answered that in the last question already, but let me talk about what I think is a good party: When, after the Offering, everything starts to move in One Vibration, and it is as if a Cosmic Mind has come over the party and everyone becomes a part of It…. And everything becomes so perfect in the moment that you start to feel chills up your spinal column…. And it continues to be perfect in the moment…. And that feeling continues and intensifies until it feels like a cosmic orgasm!!! And then, in the best parties… Boom!!! It comes like a supersonic electrical current of Light that flashes Through everyone simultaneously!!! That is when the Seed is planted!!! It is then up to those who have received it to nourish it and make it grow. In most, it will just disappear as they return to their normal life. But there are a few who will "get it". Jai Ma !!! Of course these things happen during the course of the whole night and day slowly, slowly. Sometimes it takes a long while to exorcise all the demons and get the people moving together in One Vibration. When it happens it is as if time and space have disappeared and there is only Being Here and Now… And it is as if my Heart is communicating directly with the Hearts of the Dancers each one individually yet all at once. OM NAMAH SHIVAYA !!!!! HARA HARA MAHADEV !!!!! Q: Is psychedelic trance, a "tool" for higher states of consciousness, comparable to other forms such as yoga and deep meditation? How do you look at it in this aspect ? A: Well, I think that we lived in India so long and did so many practices that we started to see in another way…. We became so Tantric that we even made partying a valid spiritual path…. Although it really is nothing new, as every tribal group since the beginning of time has practiced this ancient ritual in order to go into Trance and commune with the Spirit. We have only redefined it for this age. OM Shri Guru Dattatraya Namah !!! With so many negative roll models all around… on the TV, in the movies, newspapers and magazines… everything glorifying Babylon… we needed to come to the world and speak to the youth in their own language… so that there can be a direct Transmission and another Vision and Vibration be known. Through the Trance Dance Experience hopefully people will become more aware of themselves, their surroundings, the crossroads of humanity, and the needs of the planet…. With that awareness comes understanding and compassion!!! That is the need of the hour and the true Goa Spirit Q: Any projects your working on this year you would like to talk about. Perhaps a new mix cd, or maybe even something in the production line ? A: We are just back from our winter in India, and we are just organizing our summer tour of Europe (see tour dates at www.goagil.com )… no plans for a CD mix at the moment, but maybe later in the summer…. We would love to get into a studio with Ariane to make some more Nommos tracks, as it has been a couple of years, but the DJ schedule has been so busy that it is hard to find the time in between!!! Let's see what happens as the summer progresses. We'll just leave it all in the Hands of Lord Shiva !!!!! OM TAT SAT !!!!!
  12. Artist: Future Prophecy Date: 09-17-00 By: Chaitu Q: Ok, to start off with, who are Future Prophecy and when did you start producing music? A: We are Hagay (25), software engineering student, and Itay (23), a student and a manger of a production company. Two brothers leaving in the capital of the Negev desert, Be'er-Sheva. We both started our musical way in the Forum club in Be'er Sheva, Hagay was a DJ (first 80s' music, electronic stuff, and then trance), and Itay was working with lights and also DJing from time to time. Our development is part of the general development in music in general. We don't have a very electronic background. We arrived at trance when a friend brought us a tape, and we listened to it in the car. At first we were not too enthusiastic about it, but what drew us to it immediately was the bass. We always loved music and we have tons of stuff at home of all kinds and genres. We like most Pink Floyd, Aviv Geffen, and a lot of alternative rock. Our first album (Future Prophecy) was released about six months after we signed up with Helicon, and seven months after we first touched this kind of equipment. It was actually an album in which we first felt the electronic experience. The second album (Seeds of Rage) didn't take long to come (about 8 months after the first), and had our big hit "Indra" that was heavily played all over the world. In this album we really connected more to the scene, and started to get better understanding in the technical aspect, about errors we've made, and also generally speaking. At that point we understood better where we're heading in trance and in general. A year later Shadows was released. We got real good reviews about it, and we feel that in this album we made a deep change in production and concept. We first remixed a famous act (X-Dream) in this album. The fourth album, the last so far, took a year and a half more to come out, after hard work and searching and looking inside ourselves. We refrain from judging ourselves musically and leave that to the experts, but technically and emotionally, we feel a development in the present and also for the near future. A lot of work was put into this project, we sealed ourselves to music for six months, went into ourselves, and worked on our music- we can say that every sound in this one is the fruit of our own work and labor. Q: Can you name a few artists that have influenced and inspired you, and your current top 5 favourite tracks? A: Alternative rock ,X-Dream, Pink Floyd, Suede, it might not manifest itself in the studio, but it's somewhere there in the background, and might be more felt in the future, actually i dont have top favourite from the reason that I love evreything. Q: Which is your favourite 'Future Prophecy' track? A: My favourites are the 2room, freak, keep the frequency{L,S,D}, picture of the universe Q: Do you play a lot of parties? A: No i dont play a lot It was probably a matter of marketing. Probably the way in which we were marketed till this album didn't match our needs. We are now working with our label manager and the label's P&R to change that. but we enjoy at love prade. Q: Are there any artists out there you would like to collaborate with? A: It can be interesting to work with variety of my style artist Q: And lastly, how do you feel about the scene in Israel and worldwide? And will you be releasing more music soon? A: I feel the scene return to be whate she was before 3 or 4 years ago more underground, In isreal is quit difficult to the scene but im optimist.
  13. Artist: Frequency Deluxe Date: 11-05-02 By: Mars Q: Who are you, where do you come from, and what are you doing in life except making music ? A: Frequency: Deluxe is Ken Small and Alex Cornfeld. Shanti Matkin was also part of FD, but he moved away and we haven't heard much from him in the last year and a half. I (Alex) occasionally work in the film industry. The last project I worked on was an IMAX rock-concert film. Ken is the produce manager at a huge organic market. Q: There are not so many psy artists in the states. How did you start ? Were you helped by any other artist ? A: Ken was a techno DJ in L.A. (DJ Metro) in the late 1980's - long before anyone even knew what techno was. I was also a DJ in the mid 1990's. For both of us, the jump to making music was quite natural as the next step. Ken and I were introduced at a party - Ken had been making ambient music for some time and I had just started making trance - we hit it off and started working together. Shanti was staying at a mutual friends house in L.A. and as soon as we were introduced he joined the fray. For some reason, the U.S. is always a bit behind the rest of the world in terms of art and music. However, there are actually lots of electronic music artists beginning to emerge in the U.S. and it's only a matter of time before they become known. Q: How would you describe your style ? Some people say 'GMS-like....' A: Well, there is no doubt that GMS has been an influence on us. I always thought their music was cutting edge. And of course, Shanti was working with us for some time (and he is a member of GMS). All of the music we have ever listened to - good, bad, or other - has influenced us. But we would like to think that we are developing our own style, so that someone listing to a new track of ours might think, "Hmmm, that sounds like Frequency: Deluxe..." Q: Where does the inspiration come from when building a track ? A: Tracks are strange things. Sometimes Ken will have a very specific idea of what he wants to do with a track, and he will carefully craft just what he wants. Other times it's more like divine intervention. We can be working on something for a long time, not completely satisfied, and all of a sudden, for no readily apparent reason, it will all come together. Q: What equipment do you use ? A: The computer we use is a dual 1ghz Mac running Logic platinum 5 (with many plug ins). We have a Speck Electronics and a Yamaha 03D mixer. We have a Kurzweil 2500, a Nord Lead 2, 2 Roland JP 8000's and an Access Virus C. Outboard effects are an Ensonic DP Pro and A T.C. Electronics Fireworx. And we use a T.C. Electronics Finalizer 96k both for A/D tracking as well as mastering. Q: You have an album ready i heard ? Please tell us more about it. A: The album is due out literally any day (note : now released since march 10th). It is eponymously titled (Frequency: Deluxe) and has ten tracks. It's being released by Kagdila Records (check 'em out at KagdilaRecords.com...) and we're very psyched about it. Q: Any other projects ? / Would you like to make tracks with some other artists ? A: Ken is working on his own making ambient as well as trance music. I am working on something a bit different these days: I'm working with a jazz musician by the name of Gil Melle (Blue Note Records, Higher Octave) making an Electro-Jazz album. Shanti, well, like I said we haven't heard from him in a while, but I see his name all over the place. Q: I guess you're staring to play a bit everywhere. When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? A: We are just starting to play a bit, so in all honesty we don't have lots of sex, drugs n' trance stories... yet Q: What do you think of the Psy-scene at the moment? A: Again, we don't really have a good first person opinion on the global trance scene as we have barely been in it. In L.A. there used to be a good scene, though its always been small. But it's quiet now. Up in San Francisco they have a great scene, though it's also small, well, perhaps "tight knit" is a better term. Q: And what do you feel when you see people totally freak out to your music ? A: Put simply: There's no better feeling in the world. Q: If you DJ , what are your current favourite groups and tracks ? A: I do DJ, but much of my music is embarrassingly old. Of the new stuff I like 3D Vision artists for the harder stuff and Iboga artists for a little more minimal/mixable stuff. Q: As of today, what is your favourite FD track ? A: My favorite Frequency: Deluxe track is "Drip Technique." Ken insists he doesn't have one, though we both love a track we just finished called "Three in One" which will be out on some compilation, though I forgot which one. Q: What do you think of the MP3 revolution, and what do you think of people trading them without buying the stuff ? A: We have very mixed feeling about MP3s and cd-rs... Of course every computer today comes with a cd burner and when a friend has a cd and says, "You'll love this, make a copy..." it's tough to resist. I do have burned music (though some of it was given to me by artists, etc.) and who doesn't want a free cd? But as artists who have music now available commercially we obviously want people to buy it. We did give away hundreds, if not thousands of cds of our own music over the last couple of years. There is no way of avoiding the fact that the music industry has changed recently due to technology. There must be a way for that technology to be embraced and utilized in a positive manner (wish I knew what it was...). Hopefully, it will work itself out in the near future. Thanks very much and we wish you good luck for the future !
  14. Artist: Four Carry Nuts Date: 10-28-00 By: Mindbender Q: What were you doing before writing psy-trance? How and when did you start making Goa? A: Tim: I started to play guitar when I was seven years old. When I was 12-13, I played in a couple of metal and rock bands. In 94 I started to make techno. A year later, in 95, I went to my first trance party. There I found the right people, the right music and the right place to play this music. Around 96 I spent 2½ years in an audio-engineering school in Frankfurt. After finishing that, I've lived like now, playing in parties and making tracks. Detlef: I started making techno in 1990. My first records was released in 1992, called Gilgamesch. At the same time as making music, I started DJ'ing and I played in big raves in Frankfurt and Basel, Switzerland, for example. In 1994 was my first trance party, the VooV experience in Germany. In 96 I met Tim and we founded Four Carry Nuts. My musical basis is industrial and avant-garde music in Germany. Q: Tim, why did you choose to work with your real name, as most artists have some pseudonyms? A: Tim: Before I had different names. Different labels wanted me to use different names for their label only. When I was releasing my first track on Bim's label [Medium Records], I was thinking what name to use and he suggested to me, why not use my real name? Q: How about you, Detlef, how have you chosen your artist names? A: Detlef: When I was 12, I read a book "Gilgamesch Epos" [epos in English is epic]. I was fascinated about this book and the story and later chose the name to be my artist name. D. Fundation is a really a variation of my own name [Detlef Funder]. Q: Well, then there is Four Carry Nuts. How did you choose this name? A: Detlef: Why not… [laughter] Tim: I don't know… Detlef: It sounds silly. Tim: A lot of people think that it has a deeper meaning, but that's not the case. Q: Are you planning to release a new album? If so, when? A: Tim: We are working on a Four Carry Nuts album and I'm also working on a solo album. This might take some time though, because we are also doing different things, not only our music, like mastering and producing other bands, and then we can't work on the albums. We also work for Aurinko Records. We actually started to work on a Four Carry Nuts album two years ago, but we got interrupted. We got two tracks made, which will be released in some eight weeks from Aurinko Records as a 12". We're releasing them separate because the style does not fit with the new album we're making now. Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best? A: Detlef: Can't say. I like many of my own tracks. It all depends on the mood. If I'd have to say something, maybe Donuts or Lucy (female). Tim: When making tracks, I always try to make every new track better than the one before. Of one's own tracks it is really hard to say. Q: You often use guitars in your tracks. Is it just your style or more? A: Tim: The guitar is the normal instrument I play. I've played since I was young and it's just a normal thing to do, to combine the guitar with trance that I make. The guitar is a very powerful instrument, so it fits well with the full-on sound and I just like it a lot. I'd also like to combine other things, such like vocals or industrial sounds to psy-trance. Q: Where do you get inspiration for your music? What are your main influences? A: Detlef: Our influences come from different directions. My influences are from jazz, early German electronic music, like Tangarine Dream, Ashra Temple or Klaus Shulze. I'm always looking for new sounds and creating them with synths or software. My inspiration comes from myself, my feelings and my emotions. Tim: My influences are rock, metal industrial and EBM [electronic body music]. Examples of groups would be Rob Zombie, Front 242, Ministry, Sepultura, Nine Inch Nails and Slayer. But I do listen to a lot of different stuff. My inspiration just sometimes comes. Sometimes I just get a certain idea and then I sit down and just do it. I can't really say where I get my inspiration. Sometimes it comes, sometimes it doesn't come… I like dark music and dark stuff in general. Sometimes I get my inspiration from this type of stuff, like horror movies. Q: Tell us your recipe to make a good track .Is the same whether you work alone or together? A: Detlef: There is really no recipe… Tim: We're still looking for the recipe. Gilgamesch is techno-stuff. For myself, I prefer to make dark stuff. Four carry nuts is a mix of our styles. Detlef: I like more the techno-stuff and the techno-arrangement: monotone and hard, noisy sounds. My new project, D. Fundation is more a mixture between maybe techno and progressive trance. I've released a D. Fundation track on Bim's Floor-compilation. Q: What equipment do you use to music? A: Tim: There's really too much mention them all, but the ones we use most at the moment are Mackie mixing deck, Apple Macintosh G4, Nord Micro Modular, Nordlead Microwave I/II, Jupiter 6, TC Electronics Fireworks. Q: Now you are playing together as Four Carry Nuts. Are you planning to be more focused on this project than working solo in the future? A: Tim: Everything… everything… These are our main things. We'll focus on Four Carry Nuts and on our solo stuff. Detlef: I agree with Tim. Q: Any other future projects? A: Detlef: We'll be producing other groups. We don't plan to do more than what we can do. We plan to keep the projects that we have going. That's enough. Also, it is important to have creative breaks and do something else than music for a while and then come back to music. We need time to focus our thoughts on private things. The breaks are usually pretty short though. From a few days to a month. Q: Are there any other artists you'd like to work with? A: Tim: We like to work with different people. It's hard to say specific names. We'd also like to work with people outside the trance scene. Detlef: For example, we've done work with Joti [sidhu] and Dino [Psaras]. They are our friends. Q: Do you DJ? If so, what type of stuff do you play? A: Tim: I DJ, but I don't see myself as a DJ in the real sense of the word. I just DJ when people ask me to, but usually I play live. When I DJ, I mainly play my own tracks, music that I like or tracks from my friends, like Joti or Dino. Detlef is more the DJ of us, he's been doing it for some 50 years or so. Detlef: [Laughter]. I play the music that I like. I've been playing as a DJ since 89. I started with techno back then. Now I play a mixture of between techno, trance, our own music and sometimes also progressive. I really don't like progressive that much, just some tracks. But they can fit into sets well, but then I often cut them. For me it is very important to do a good mix. I really like to play records and to give the people a good feeling and let them fall into the music. I like to make my mixes into "tracks" that several hours long, with their up and downs, intros and outros. That doesn't work well if you don't mix well or you don't mix the beat and mix too often the ambient parts only. That's why I don't like DAT. There's always a break between the tracks and I like when the music just continues on. I play CD sometimes, but I prefer vinyl, because of the better feeling with them. When you have a good feeling as a DJ, you can bring this good feeling to the crowd. I could talk about this for hours, but this enough. Q: When and where was your best party and why was it the best? A: Tim: I don't know what to say… Detlef: Love Parade 1992. It was the most intense experience I ever had. Tim: [After a long silence]… All that I can say is that I like to play in Japan. Q: What do you think about the psy-trance scene globally? A: Detlef: I think the scene is looking for new music. The music is all the time developing, with new stuff coming up, like progressive for example, and nobody knows where it is developing. Tim: In my opinion, at the moment a lot of people are just playing one style. I think it is shame. It's better when there's a variety of styles. Sometimes it's a bit boring when the whole party is only one style. Q: How about the evolution of the scene and the question of becoming more popular or staying underground? A: Tim: Nobody knows… Detlef: I think Goa has always been underground and will stay so for the next years. I think it's better. Music that becomes too popular is attracted to major labels and with commercialisation the whole energy and intensity of the music is lost. Tim: People who go to party have a different opinion about this than a musician. I think most musicians think it is better if more people get to hear what they are making, but many people who go to parties, think it should stay underground. This is a very hard question for me… Q: What do you think of the musical evolution of psychedelic trance in the last years. Have things got better or worse in you opinion? A: Tim: In my opinion, for my style, it has developed to a style that I don't really like. A lot of this progressive and minimal stuff just isn't my taste. On the other hand, there are many different styles. Detlef: In this progressive stuff, trance is going back to the old techno-way, like it was some 8 years before, but now it is better produced. Now there are new ways to make more varied stuff and better sounds. More and more creative people are making music around the globe. I think it is a very good development. Q: What do you think about the development of your own music? A: Detlef: The future will show. I don't know. It's a process like life itself. Tim: I just can say that we are still on the way. We are still searching for the stuff we want to make. Q: What is the craziest thing you ever did or the craziest experience that you've had? A: Detlef: Study quantum-physics. Not at university, but I spend a lot of time at home reading these books and trying to understand them. Tim: I don't know… Detlef: What we do together is to create words… Tim: I'm really quite a quiet person. I don't do that many crazy things. Q: Do you have anything you'd like to say to your fans? A: Detlef: Thank you to all our friends for supporting our music. Tim: Have fun! Thanks ;-)
  15. Artist: Entheogenic Date: 06-14-02 By: Mars Q: So who is Entheogenic [names/ages/nationality/location] ? A: Piers Oak-Rhind; English [Dorset], Helmut Glavar born in Austria. Q: Where did you meet and when ? How did you settle in the south-west of France ? A: We met at a studio in Toulouse in 1999 where we both worked as sound technicians for Emagic. Now we currently live in an old French farm-house situated deep in the country-side far from the maddening crowd. Q: Before you met, did you make music alone ? A: Helmut: Had my first bands in the early 80’s, back then it was New Wave / Punk Piers: Yes, I’ve been jamming with friends, musicians since I was 15. Q: Your album is a surprise : 1st we'd never hard of you before, 2nd it's released on 3DVision (not up to anyone), 3rd it's great (not so usual). Please explain us all that. A: A lot of determination went into the making of Entheogenic, the emerging energy then took care of the rest. We soon had offers from several labels. We chose 3D Vision because they had a great reputation. What was also interesting was that our album was so different from what they usually release. Seemed to be an interesting adventure for both sides. Q: How would you define your style ? Some people say "Shpongle-like"... A: Organic ambient psychedelic landscape dream music. ‘’Shpongle-like’’: probably, because very few people make music on this level, plus we use the same kind of instruments; synths, computers, samplers, water etc. Q: Where does the inspiration come from when building a track ? A: Of course we have our muses… But the album was strongly influenced by Ayahuasca, which became a musical translation of a 5 hour journey through different levels of intense psychedelic experiences. Plus any emotional experience of any sort is a great driving force for inspiration. Q: What equipment do you use to make your music ? A: All kind of machines, which translate our internal visions into external soundscapes. Q: Do you plan to release more tracks ? A: We are currently finishing our second album at the moment, and there are possibilities to do some tunes on a few compilations. But as far as we know there will be an endless stream of tantalizing music ahead of us. Q: Which of your own tracks do you like most ? A: Helmut: All of them tell a part of the story, the question would then be; which part of the story we prefer, and this is rather difficult to answer. Piers: Different things appeal differently at different times. Q: What kind of music do you usually listen to ? A: Helmut: Depends on the moment, - lots of classical, lots of psy-trance and lots of whatever lies in between. Piers: Mostly psychedelic music, {Hallucinogen, Shpongle, Pink-Floyd etc.} I think the new 3D Vision album ‘Inside’ is very good and intense. I also have a deep passion for Indian and Celtic music. Q: Are you involved in other projects ? A: Other then creating music.. no. Q: Are there any artists you'd like to work with ? A: Sure, we have plans to use classical and ethnic musicians from all over the globe. Any offers are welcome. Q: What are you doing in life except making music ? A: Walking, sleeping and dreaming up music, other than that we like to travel physically and mentally. Q: Will you play in some parties/festivals this summer ? A: We are invited to Greece, France and Italy, but would also like to get some time off. Q: Which was your best party, and your worst one ? A: Helmut: Brazilian parties are always great, if there ever was a worst one we forgot about it. Piers: Hard to remember Q: What do you think of the evolution of electronic music ? Good, Bad or Ugly in your opinion ? A: Helmut: The possibilities today are fantastic, electronic music is a tool to express yourself in ever more complex ways. Combining it with organic natural sounds and instruments makes the sound canvas ever richer. Piers: I agree, things can only get better.
  16. Artist: Elysium Date: 08-18-01 By: Anoebis Q: Hello, and thanks for doing an interview with us!! So when, how and why did you start to make music? A: I started making music when I was around 13-14 years old.... Before that I had studied piano since I was 7 years old. First I just made some simple recordings on a 8 track tape recorder dubbing synthesizers and rythms and experimented alot - you know sticking mickes out the window and recording city noises and going out into the nature and recording birds ect. A early kind of sampling... At that time (early eighties) I was into "New Wave" listening to bands such as Visage, Japan, Ultavox, Kraftwerk and many more. There was no going back for me... I had to create my own music... Later I joined a band "THe Innocent" and we played together for 6 years and nearly made it "Big time" but at the last minute our record label got sold and we got dropped. Bad luck I guess!!!! I guess music has always been in my blood since my family took me to different jazz and classical concerts even before I could crawl. Q: Why did you choose Psychedelic Trance and not other kinds of music ? A: I don´t think I choose this music and I don´t really call it psychedelic Trance... I think too many labels on music make the music false and predictable.... For me music is music as long as it is honest and innovative. I sometimes laugh at people telling me that I do great goa trance... I have never been to Goa so how can I make goa trance - why not Copenhagen trance then....???? Goa is to me a place in India - not a music style... For me it was a natural evolution from the early electronic music I made and it could just as well have been acid jazz, trip hop or house. It all depended on the time and place and my love to music.... I had been living in the UK for a while when I discovered the early techno/azid boom and I loved the parties in barns across the country..... When I returned to Denmark I meet a old girlfriend of mine and she took me to a "trance party" in Christiania in Copenhagen... This was 1993 and the music here was extrememly psychedelic and deep and I just feel in love with the sound immedialtely... After a year of intense dancing I went to the studio and recorded my first release with R&S Records (Belgium) and released the project "Tundra". I was offered a better deal with Nova Zembla Records and signed the deal with them in 1994 and changed the name to "Elysium" the rest is history.... Q: Most people know you as "Elysium". Why did you change your name ? A: I had to..... There is a "cult" heavy metal band in USA with the same name and also one in Japan and I also thought now was the time to break all chains with Nova Zembla so why not change the name too... Q: What went wrong with the Voodoo Witch-album on Nova Zembla ? A: Well everything went wrong...... After I left Nova Zembla Records they released it without my knowledge..... Apparently they had an old DAT tape frome me...where the last 4-5 tracks was not erased. The tracks was used when I did my DJ gigs..... They thought they were my tracks and released them without even bother to check with me - they even made up some titles for the tracks and the album title...very strange.... I got really angry...... First of all because it could damage me and my name when people found out that my ex. label released other artists material in my name and second because the label released some ambient music of mine that they had no rights to...... I am still working on a lawsuit against Nova Zembla..... Q: You're one of the pioneers of trance, so what do you think of the evolution of Psy-Trance ? And how will it progress in the future ? A: First of all I sincerely hope that the record labels will get their acts together and start be more selective (and professional minded) in what they release...... Don´t take me wrong I am all for the idea that all people should be able to make music.... But it is too naive to think that all people should be able to sell their music...we can´t all be painters, doctores and so fourth. Too much crap music has been released over the years and I strongly beleive that the reason why so many established distributors and record shops do not want to touch our music is because some of the music should belong in a private room and NOT on the dancefloor.... I find the present "psychedelic trance" scene very dead......... It seems as if the music has to be so similar that there´s no room for individuality anymore...... The biggest thing that made me so in love with this music and scene was that the music and people could be anything you wanted and always accepted for it´s and their uniqueness...... Now everything associated with "psychedelic trance" is stereotyped and frankly extremely boring...... I still love the music though but I hope that it will become more experimental again.....It dont want it to be like the old style but it would be nice to see some more depth in the music.. But it is very hard to predict in what way the music will go... And please don´t take people´s personality away from them.... It is no fun to watch all people on the dance floor with the same fluro T-shirt promoting the next HOT brand...... If people want to party in a suit or fancy dress then let them....... It is not what they look like that matters but who they are..... Q: You really like to make Tribal influenced tracks, why ? A: I am not really sure why...... The fact that our world is getting smaller each day and that less and less people live in isolated in remote areas - in pact with the nature - makes me even more curious to understand where they come from.. The research for samples many times give me an understanding about their way of living and their view of life, love, religion and dead. Because I mostly sample from documentaries on TV I constantly discover new things that I can tell about in my music.... I think music is a powerful way to make people aware of their world and I think I will always in some context keep linking my music to their voices.... Q: What is according to you your best track ? A: Wow that is a very hard question...... There are so many tracks but if I have to point one out it must be "Keep It Cool". I made that track in 10 hours and it was the first track I could listen to over and over again.... For me it is the only track that came close to be perfect. Q: And what are your favourite Trance-artists and albums ? A: To be honest I have not been that much aware of what´s going on the last couple of years .... For me it has been very important to enjoy the silence and to recharge from too many parties and music the last 6-7 years.... But I am quite into some of the more deep stuff coming out on Atomic and sometimes I dig some of the music on Phantasm...... Q: So what do you do in everyday-life except making music ? A: Getting older...lol (34). No I have used the last 2 years to build my own graphic design company and experimenting with interactive web deisgn and video on the internet... Apart for that I have used alot of time visiting old friends and geting on with my relationship with my beautiful girlfriend. Q: Is psychedelic trance a "tool" for higher states of conciousness, comparable to other forms such as yago and meditation? How do you look at it in this aspect ? A: I used to think that but I am pretty sure that most of my "illusion" was caused by to much chemicals.... Offcourse psychedelic trance is magical...but as I said earlier music is music.... I can only speak for myself when I say that I can get into a "trance" listening to other kind of music such as ex. classical music and ambient..... It is all up to taste..... Music speak to all of us in different ways..... And it would be wrong to assume that only Psychedelic Trance can make you feel like this. To me meditation is about silence and to find your inner peace.... so if music can do that for you then music has served the highest purpose.... Q: What do you think about the mp3-revolution ? A: I have mixed feelings about it.... I am kinda sad to see that the CD will dissapear but at the same time I am very into it... The whole idea that I can make my own shop on the internet and sell my own music much cheaper to people appeal to me.... No more labels and distributors getting all the cake.... And I really like the fact that I will have full control over my own music...... But I will wait a couple of years before I actually make it a reality........ The technology is still not good enough... Q: May we expect more albums of you in the near future ? A: Actually I am right now finishing the last couple of track for my new album "Regenerated" which will be released later this year on the isralie label Avatar Records... You can find more info on their site www.avatar-music.com or on my site www.elysiumproject.dk
  17. Artist: Electric Universe Date:01-09-01 By: Children Q: How and when did you start making Goa ? A: In 1991 a good friend of mine asked me to come to an outdoor party to Sproetze near Hamburg. It was the first big Voov with about 1000 people from all over Europe. I was really impressed about the music and the people I met there. I did not know about Goa. I liked Techno very much but I did not like the normal big city Techno clubs and the vibe there. That party really changed my life. I had a little Atari Computer and 2 Synthesizer and so one thing came to another. It took about 2 years to come to the point to have some tracks that I gave to a few DJs. Somehow these tracks found their way to Antaro who just started the Spirit Zone Label. He liked the stuff and so the first Electric Universe Maxi Single was the second release on Spirit Zone. Q: Maybe it's a little early to ask that, but do you project to release another Electric Universe album after "Divine Design" ? A: There will be definately an Electric Universe Album in 2001. Q: What about your side-project Galaxy ? Do you project something about it soon ? And what made you decide to start this side-project ? A: Galaxy started in 1995. After producing a lot of dance music I wanted to make some slower tunes for listening at home, too. While Electric Universe is more Dancefloor orientated I decided to have a whole project for the alternative stuff. Blue Room liked it very much, so Galaxy was born. Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? A: Hard to say. It really depends on the energy of the day and the environment. Sometimes I play a track on a party and really dont like it. Next weekend I play the same track on another party and another Soundsystem and its just kicking. Q: Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? A: Hard to say, too. There is too much good music from too many Groups around the globe to mention someone special. My favorite album in the moment is an Ambient CD from a Swedish Project called Healer. Q: And which of your own albums do you like the best ? A: I like all of them. Q: Could you describe us the different steps you generally follow to build a Track? A: There is no general way I follow. Somehow I try to catch the vibe of the day or the night and to find something that fits into my energy. That can be a beat or a bassline or a melody from where I can start to build something around. Sometimes the finished track has nothing to do anymore with the point I started with. The best things come just by themselfs out of the moment. Q: I personally find your style really unique, like few psy-artists around the world ... where does your inspiration come from ? A: The whole life is inspiration. Good partys are inpiring me, too. And love is the best inspiration I ever found. All emotions can be expressed in music, if you work from the heart. Its possible to make brainmusic only with the head, too, but that is quite boring most of the time. Q: What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? A: I use Logic Audio on Mac and I love Roland Synthesizers very much. The Mixer is a Mackie 8 Bus Analog Desk. Q: Future projects ? A: Plenty of Liveacts around the globe in 2001. A dance and an ambient Album and many other things... Q: Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? A: For the next Electric Universe Album I will invite some other artist. It is very good to have the influence of other people. I also like to produce a track with the guys from X-Dream, but we didnt manage yet, though we know us for many years. Q: Do you play DJ sets ? If so, what kind of stuff do you play as DJ in parties ? A: I dont play as a DJ because I dont have the time beside Studio and Liveacts. To be a good DJ you have to spend a lot of time with the music you want to play. So I decided to focus on making and playing only my own stuff. Q: When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? A: Best party for the last years was Arcadia Summer Festival 2000 in Japan. I love the Japanese Party Crowd. Worst experience was playing an empty Hamburger Markthalle for maybe 20 people, a big hall for normally more than 1000 people. Q: As a pioneer of psytrance (your first album was released in 1995), what do you think about the evolution of psytrance in the last years ? Have things gotten better/worse according to you ? A: Lots of things are much better now. Many things are worse, too. I am very sad if I am at partys where everybody is just trying to escape live with drugs. That is not so nice to see. But Psytrance can be a platform for a new conciosness. For me it is very important that there are theese gatherings around the whole planet to bring people together in peace to celebrate life and to open/expand their minds. It is most important that people come together in peace and respect for each other and our mother Earth if we dont want to destroy the whole thing. In Germany Psytrance started very early and it was very euphoric in the beginning. Everything comes to a saturation after a while but there are still very good partys. I am in the lucky posion that I am invited to many countries where the whole thing is just starting now. Eastern Europe is full on and Amerca is trying, too. I always enjoy theese parties and the freshness of the crowd there very much. I am really looking forward to see the evolution of the music in the next years. Somehow every sound and every beat of the actual tracks have been there before. But most important are the people on the dancefloor and as long as they have really fun its great and will go on !!! Thx a lot and good luck with your next album ;-)
  18. Artist: Droidlock Date: 07-26-02 By: Mars Q: We've seen you for a long time in very different places (mainly ZA & FR) with different names and different people. Please explain us. A: I've spend few years Djing and doing parties/festivals in South Africa . I setup a music studio in cape town and start the Droidlock project sometime in 97. Few years later , in 99 maybe , i moved the studio in south of france and met Pea ( Yumade ) . We had a really good time making music together and soon after few realesed we did the Snug album. I m also doing some down kick stuff , what s been realesed on databass and Kamaflage Rec as 'Bebop' ... Q: After the Snug as a Bug album, you are releasing a "collaboration" album as Droidlock : 'High Phonics for a Replicant'. Will there be significant changes to your style with this album ? A: Not really ... I see it more as two differents alb concept , out of the same studio... Snug is the result of the synergy between Péa of Yumade and i . Droidlock album is more like "a familly album" ; friends passing through my studio during last winter... The idea , beside having a good time , was to cross different type of techno trance music througth the influence of each guest. Q: There is a special darkish touch in all your tracks. Is there a real intent to make us have chill in the spin ? A: The reaction on a track depent too much of the personne state of mind , the place , the time , the DJ... I guess i m just trying to make it sound good , easy to dj and hope people will have a good time listening or dancing to it... Anyway , somehow i don't have any opinion about my music ... Q: Has your equipment and/or the way you're working changed with the years ? A: Obviously yes .... actually that s a good thing about doing music , u can just get better ! Collaboration in studios showed me a lot too ... Joti , for exemple gave me some good tricks for mixing and Simon teached me how to roll my spliff upside down'... Q: It seems you like to make tracks with some particular artists (Péa, Dino, Joti, Serge...), isn't it ? A: Dino , Serge , Joti and Max (i mention these ones because they are on the DL album) are my friends for years ... We played in many party around the planet together. I meet Pea and Paps more recently and, at the begining, i think the interest for each other was more "professionnal" but we became good friends very quick... Paps is quite amazing in studio , he s really having a twisted approche of making a track , and Péa is probably one of the more talented guy i know to do an arrangement. Anyway , beside the talent of each one , our first relationship is simply friendly ... Q: Would you like to make tracks with some other artists ? A: Didn't think about that... i suppose there are many... Q: Now you're standalone, do you still happen to work with the Databass crew (Péa & Paps) ? Maybe more Snug ? A: Maybe more 'Snug' but certainly some 'Face'! Pea and i are currently working on a new album for DTB . We are not sure when it will be ready , maybe sometime around next december... Q: I know you have Yet another project...so ? A: What do u mean ??? I do also have an other project , ambiant ; or down beat if u prefer ; but it is very 'fresh' so i would prefer not to speak about it... Q: Now you're going all over the world, When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? A: Lots of good parties, everywhere ! Recently i had some ecxellent gigs in Mexico, Japan, Toronto and finally Paris with the GAIA X... I also had some brillant time in S.Africa a little while ago , probably some of the more intense party experience of my life happened in cape Town. I don't remember any 'worst one' really ... somehow i alway manadge to have a good time in Party and if the situation is really too bad , then i get few drinks , a fat joint and patiently wait for someone to drive me back to my hotel... Q: What do you think of the Psy-scene at the moment ? A: It's massive... particulary in the southern ethmisphere ( S.Africa, Japan, Brazil...etc etc ) So many web sites, chats, previews... It doesn't have much left of an underground scene anymore but i guess this music doesn't want to be 'underground' no longer... Anyway , even if trance party are bigger and bigger every years, there is still the same hope on the dancefloor. it's just the beguining... Q: And what do you feel when you see people totally freak out to your music? A: It feels a bit strange... but obviously it is a nice feeling. Q: As a DJ, what are your current favourite groups and tracks ? A: When DJing , i m using very different type of trance music ; passing from 'Mosquito' to 'Synthetic', from 'Mos' to 'Hallucinogen', 'Yumade' to 'Etnica'... 'Beat Machine' from Dado is one of my favorite tune at the moment but it's unfair to mention only one track, there are many i like !!! I suppose i like a tune as soon as it sounds fat, original and surpising. Q: As of today, what is your favourite Droidlock track ? A: The one i just started , but it is always like this. Q: What do you think of the MP3 revolution, and what do you think of people trading them without buying the stuff ? A: MP3 is great; it makes music available to anyone... I'm not sure people should dj with it. Thanks very much and we wish you good luck for the future !
  19. Artist: Deviant Species Date: 07-05-01 By: Danger Q: When did you start making psytrance ? A: Circa 1993-1994 gradually deviating from other forms of electronic endeavour, some of these being druidic ... Q: Your musical background ? A: A formless array of musical tendencies colliding within a cauldron of psychobeats Punk, grundge & industrial bands .... Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? A: Those with cloudy breaks leading to a blind summit, stuff you can play live like jughead, carrier, the forge or those that make you cackle like Geb ... Q: Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? A: Mmm.. heard very good stuff in parties but we were mostly off our faces to realise who was playing and what ... Actually the other day Vince from "Synaptic Meltdown System" played us some really cool stuff he had done... Q: Where does your inspiration come from ? A: Those few seconds of redemption that set in after bouts of debauchery; sticky skunk, the bodies information storage retrieval system, that receptacle for ancient knowledge handed down from the bio-diversive elements that ebb seemingly effortless ... Q: Tell us something about Ambivalent Records. What happened to Zerotonine UK? A: Ambivalent is a more deviant name ... Q: What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? A: A G4 400 Mac running Cubase + loads of plug-ins, Nord Lead, JP8000, Nova & BassStation synths, a ProMix 01 Yamaha mixer ... Q: Future projects, new tracks ? A: A remix of a Charasmatix track called 'Equilibrium' and a compilation on our own Ambivalent Records label under the name of "Creeping Ambivalent Tendencies" featuring new artists such as Thermal Boundaries, a psychic odyssey from the likes of Frank Yallop & The Seminal, those ganja whores named Joint Effort, Mike Modular and others. It is going to be quite up-tempo but there will be some psy dub tracks & ambience thrown in for good measure ... Q: Is there any artist you'd like to work with ? A: Yeah, there are some tweaking wizards about and we are open to suggestions. Q: What do you think about the evolution of psytrance in the last years ? A: I see the gradual evolution of the ever increasing esoteric art form....Generally good, music becoming more abstract & deeper although at the moment it is pretty hit-and-miss, loads of minimalistic bollocks about. It is easy to see how some of these tunes make sense in parties held in small clubs where you have to squeeze in and dance almost rigid to avoid hitting people, they do generate some ambience & elbow room but also encourage passing wanna-be producers to churn out rubishy half-cooked fodder that litters the scene ... Q: What do You think about the future of psytrance ? A: Well, more trance producers appearing pouting in their album covers .., trance producers taking up fluoro clothing design & possibly manufacturing > to join in the profitable side of the scene as music pirating escalates ... on the other hand a larger world-wide festival circuit, part of the scene moving into mainstream, holistic biodiversive excess ... Q: Other artist releases on Ambivalent UK ? A: this is still early dates but if anyone has any music they think we might like send it to our agent at cauldronwallace@deviantspecies.co.uk Thx a lot from the psy-community and give us more awesome tracks !

  22. Artist: Deedrah Date: 03-22-00 By: Infected Max Q: First of all, how would you describe your music in few words ? A: Trance has been evoluting in so many different directions now ,that it would be very hard to give any definition to this sound.originaly Trance music was coming from Germany(91/92) but fast some artists like juno reactor started to carry on with more sounds and developpments.I would say that,as far as I know, vision of the trance is very different from country to another...People in Israel don't expect the same music from a trance DJ than is the states or japan for example.(that's maybe why being a trance DJ is so interesting nowadays! by now now trance is mainly divided into 2 separate movement: -The sasha kind-of -style trance ,that's a mix between fluffy belgium club house and early trance style.very powerfull at the moment. -The psy-trance,that's the style that is the daughter of the first goa trance vibe, called the big wave, containing artists we all know,psychaos,gms,absolum...this is the following of the original psy-trance. If I wanted to give a more personal definition to trance,I would say that it s any sound sequences that induces a pro-opio-melanocortine(POMC) production in my brain.pomc is a precursor of the molecules that makes you naturally feel good. (sorry, this is my very personal definition...) Q: Is Trance Your Favourite Music Style ? A: Definetly not! Trance music can be very good, but the current production is boring me a lot.(apart from some productions from christofs and a few stuffs on the market). I do listen a lot to bands like LEFTFIELD,LFO,UNDERWORLD,CHEMICAL BROTHERS,ANY VYNIL FROM THE PRIMATE LABEL,STUFFS FROM DJ CARI LECHEBUSH IN SWEDEN,some very techno stuff in general and also some experimental hip-hop.I'm getting nut listening to what the american artists are doing with machines.it s a very different vision of electronic music, and by the way, very fresh to me.I'm also a big fan of DJ shadow and with no orders,DM,empirion, flucke, sting, cure, simple minds, new order... I don't listen to trance in my place, basically, even though i listen to a lot of trance in my studio! Q: How and When did you start to make Trance ? A: I started in 94 together with a guy called chris in paris.it was called TRANSWAVE,and we were mad on the case. Q: Are you currently preparing a new album ?When do you project to release it ? A: I'm currently finishing to produce an album of psy-house music. It's a mix of the trancey sounds and the house vibes. It's very exciting to me,and I have much pleasure to record this at the moment... I don't project to release anything by now before the summer.Anyway it all depends on my record label ,not me Q: Your Favourite Dado Track ? A: I don't like dado's music so much.I m still very touched by the emotional texture of a track called "cycles of life" from transwave Q: Your favourite Trance Group ,Album, Top 5 Goa Tracks ? A: I'm still a big fan of any XDREAM stuff. coolest album right now : JUNO REACTOR album 'SHANGO' Q: Where does your inspiration come from ? A: From everywhere basically.most of the time,in the studio, everything is coming to me from a drum loop or a nice sound.software like "metasynth" or any spark plug-ins are very good for inspiration. I get a lot of ideas also when i'm dancing . Q: Your favourite equipment ? A: The POWER MAC!!!! Q: Future Projects ? A: Finishing my new album (under the project name of THE ELECTRIC BOY a new single of synthetic. and something i cannot talk about right now... Q: Can you tell us more about Synthetic ? A: Synthetic is my techno harder side.i try to do a good mixture of hard techno beats and club vibes Q: Would you like to work with a particular artist ? A: Yes, ALAN WILDER (DEPECHE MODE) Q: More generally : what do you think of the future of Psychedelic Trance music style ? A: I have no fucking idea.most of the time i don't ask myself such questions. Thanks a lot Dado !
  23. Artist: Cosma Date: 08-30-01 By: Chaitu Q: Who is Cosma ? Tell us a little about yourself to get to know you better. A: "Cosma" is Avihen Livne from a sity called Kiriat Bialik, in Israel. I'm 22 years old and music is my main interest. Q: What is your musical background ? A: I've started making music three years ago, mainly trance music. I started working as a team called "Diablo" for a year. We produced an album called "Insufficient Memory", and since then I'm working by my self. Q: When were you first attracted to Trance, and what inspired the step towards production of this genre of music ? A: I was first attracted to trance music five years ago, when I started going to outside trance parties. The underground atmosphere, the mystery, and the multi - meaning trance music has attracted me and inspired me towards producing this music. Q: Do you listen to other styles of music besides Trance. Anything out there you would like to recommend ? A: Yes, I do. I like "Depeche Mode", "Cure", "Vast", "Sister of Mercy", "Massive Attack", "Dead Can Dance", etc. Q: I believe you are using mostly computers to generate your sound. How are you getting such an amazing quality in your sound, what's the secret ? A: I keep the secret to my self. I believe that the less buttons, the work will be less complicated. Q: Many artists today are moving to audio and midi is becoming kind of obsolete. Do you feel working with audio is good enough to make professional quality tracks ? What is your view on this topic ? A: Audio is good enough, and the proof for that is my album. Q: In my honest opinion, 'Simplicity' is the best album Israeli album of the year - It simply Rocks ! Can you tell us about it ? A: It took me almost a year to produce this album, a lot of hard work. Things I've been through this year had a strong effect on my work. The album includes all kinds of trance music: from deep trance through ambient, progressive, and full on. Through this album I tried to reach audience of all music backgrounds. Q: Do you play DJ sets at all? Which are your favourite tracks at the time (Top 10) ? A: I prefer not to. I love live performances, they are much more energetic, and people know it is your music you are playing. My favorite tracks are: (not in particular order) coming soon ... Q: Any artists out there you would like to collaborate with ? Future projects perhaps ? A: I would like working with Dado, Spectral, Quirk, Future projects are another trance album, and then may be moving to more universal music. Q: What kind of audience is your music aimed at. How would you like people to approach your music ? A: All kinds of people, no boundaries. Q: What other things in life interest you besides music ? A: I love traveling, love nature, the beach, landscapes ... I'm also interested in art. Q: What direction is Trance taking in Israel ? Is there hope for melodies in the future ? A: Melodies and full on apply best for the Israeli audience. It started here in Israel. What is a morning in a trance party without melodies ?
  24. Artist: Chi-ad Date: 01-02-01 By: Children Q: First of all, why "Chi-ad" ? A: Well - CHI is..........................................................and means the body's inner energy or life-force and A.D. is for Anno Domini which is Latin for "in the year of our Lord". The A.D. was added for legal & contractual reasons. It's actually pronounced chee and not Chai as many people seem to think. Q: How and when did you start to make Goa ? A: After releasing quite a few underground tracks under various guises my first real Goa project was the 1997's Virtual Spirit album. The project was intended to mix some of harder and more abrasive elements of Acid Techno - which I was initially involved in - with the more uplifting and melodic elements of Goa Trance. CHI-A.D.'s music has always been about trying to capture that really good rushing feeling at a great party. It's about the energy behind and within the music. Q: Do you project to release a new album ? When would it be released ? A: We will be recording a new album in Winter 2000 which will probably be released on Nova Tekk (velvet Inc.) in Jan/Feb 2001. About 7 or 8 of the tracks are already finished. Musically the album will see a return to the more uplifting and melodic musicality of tracks like "Eye am the I" and "Celestial". In the meantime we have been looking into releasing an album with Nova Tekk which would feature remastered and remixed versions of many of the tracks which have featured on compilations. (see below) Q: Half of the people who reviewed your albums on our site think the Tracks you release on compilations (like Biocandy, Exit Eternity, Astral Warrior Rmx or Eye Am The I) are much better than the ones on your albums, the other half also like your albums a lot . do you have a clue to explain such different opinions about your albums and so similar ones about the Tracks you release on compilations ? A: Yeah they are good tracks.........Ha Ha...........It just worked out that way that the tracks in question ended up on compilations rather than on albums. Sometimes it's a question of timing and record company decisions:- for instance "Purity" and "Spirit" were originally intended to be on Virtual Spirit but Nova Tekk initially wanted to release these as a 12" and then didn't release it, ,,,,,,,,,,,,so what can you do. Tracks which were written in the spaces between albums usually ended up being licensed for compilations I personally think the albums follow a much broader musical spectrum which take in a lot more elements of "Trance music" in general than what we have come to call psy-trance. They are more of a listening process and were definitely intended to be more of a musical journey following a theme from start to finish....... rather than a collection of 12" 's - which was definitely the intention with Virtual Spirit. Both albums weren't really intended to be 'Banging Psy-trance' cos that was what everyone was releasing. Having said that "Anno Domini" did perhaps suffer due to combination of a denser production sound and the fact that it was mastered In one respect it's good that people like different elements of the music and that it has raised such a broad debate. However, we don't want to alienate the fans who are into the tracks you have mentioned and have noticed that people definitely seem to prefer the 'classic' CHI-A.D. sound to follow the tracks you have mentioned.............we are hoping the new album will be collection of Killer tunes which will work both on the dance-floor and as a listening experience. Q: A rumour says you would release a collection of old Tracks released on comps, like Tim Schuldt did for his first album . is it true ? A: We did speak to Nova Tekk about this in the middle of the last year. A lot of people were saying it would be nice to get the compilation tracks on one album. The thinking behind this was to collect all the 'hard to find' and cool compilation tracks (which had never been released together) for our fans and give them a full album of these tracks, re-mastered with perhaps a couple of remixes and unreleased tracks to give value for money. It would also give our fans something in the spaces between "official" full length album projects. This never materialised however,...... it's still a good idea we would be open to offers from any labels out there!!!!!!! Q: Why did you name the Track " Eye Am The I " instead of " I Am The Eye " ? Are you planning to do a remix of this Track, or more generally some remixes of your old Tracks ? A: Andy normally names the tracks unless I really put my foot down...... Not very often ........Ha Ha. He's into Plays on words and stuff...............we knew when the track was finished that it was a pretty cool one so we thought the title should be a bit memorable.......I think it worked. Q: Which of your own tracks do you like the best ? A: I like all the trax , but I do have a soft spot for Healing magic , Celestial ,pathfinder and Eye am the I Q: Your favourite psychedelic Groups & Albums ? A: Most things by Astral Projection, X Dream, Oforia, Cosmosis, Tim Schuldt, the odd track here and there such as Johann's "Stranded - the delta remix" Q: Where does your inspiration come from when building a Track ? A: I draw my energy from Nature , and her many mysteries. Q: What kind of equipment do you use to make your Tracks ? A: Main synths used on the tracks are Korg Triton, Novation Nova 2 (recent additions), Roland JP-8000, Korg Z1, Roland SP-808, Roland JV 1080, Yamaha AN1X Q: Future projects ? A: Much more CHI-A.D. If the new album is well received it should prove the catalyst for some great new tracks..................I'm much happier with the production which has definitely retained the musicality in the new album tracks. we've always had a problem before where the production seemed to suffer due to the musical structure of the tracks. I think this new album will definitely go a long way to resolving this. More parties hopefully, for some reason we don't get to play many parties at all - 1 or 2 a year but things look to be changing. Hopefully, another CHI-A.D. album by the end of the year if all goes well - and perhaps a couple of mystery side projects. Q: Is there another artist you'd like to work with ? A: Peter Gabriel (???????????) should get them talking Q: Do you play DJ sets in parties ? If so, what kind of stuff do you play as DJ in parties ? A: Don't do the DJ thing ..............I leave that to the DJ's Q: When & where was your best party ? And your worst one ? A: Medium records party in Germany , realy good atmosphere and sounds. Leicester UK Where we played to one person !!! I think was the worst. Q: As you're in psytrance for many years, what do you think about the evolution of psytrance in the last years on a musical point of view ? Have things gotten better/worse according to you ? A: It appears to have become a bit too fragmented for such a small scene. Much of the original energy seems to have been lost. Not too keen on the more progressive side of the music, good for DJ's but the music isn't as exciting as the early Goa/Psy releases. Thx a lot and good luck for this new year ;-) Love , light n spirituality Take Care
  25. Artist: California Sunshine Date: 02-17-01 By: Chaitu Q: Can you talk to me about your musical background.
