Artist: Various Title: Moonkeys Label: Moon Spirits Records Date: March, 2004 1. GMS Vs. Sonic Surfers - Hyperspaced 2. Talamasca Vs. Dmitri DKN - Abstract Energy 3. Nomad - The Magic Sofa's Show 4. Omi Vs. Exaile - Going Commercial 5. CPU - Simulation 6. Sirius Isness - Psychedelic Love Stories 7. Silicon Sound - Voyager 8. Signs - The World Has Changed 9. Cell - Father What does it tell you when the GMS track is one of the most engaging? F*cking apocalypse that's what it means. Even the still clinging to his soul CPU track was underwhelming. I can remember listening to this a decade ago and really liking it. I've either grown up and matured or I was higher than a motherf*cker. Like Signs says The World Has Changed. Only, I wish they would've just said it instead of making a track out of it. I ain't that young anymore that I need to be wasting 8 minutes of time on annoying sounds. I have kids so I get that all the time. I would say the one track keeping this off life support was the closing Cell effort. It was smooth and relaxing making me forget the previous 8 tracks on the compilation. Didn't. Age. Well. Psyshop Mdk

With the speed of a snail moving uphill with a piano on his back this is some dreamy downtempo goodness. Epic melodies with pads that seem to stretch on forever. I can see why some might say this has a drone aspect to it. It's beautiful stuff that's not in a hurry to get anywhere. And I'm enjoying the journey. I would say if there is one drawback it is that he rides a theme all the way into the sunset. By that I mean a phrase that is undoubtedly beautiful is spread out over several minutes thereby lessening it's impact. BTW anyone know what the title means? Mdk

Artist: Digitnick Title: Virtualizer EP Label: Liquid Seed Recordings Date: January 30, 2015 01 - One Mantra (Digitnick Remix) (140 BPM) 02 - The Dark Passenger (142 BPM) 03 - Overview (144 BPM) 04 - Virtualizer Off (143 BPM) The cover of this ep could've just as easily been a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or a white delivery truck with the words truck on the side. The promo says "provides an unexpected trip into pure psytrance full of colour and energy." No it doesn't. Stop lying to people. I think that's what you wanted the music to say, but this is an exercise in boredom with rolling basslines and snooze inducing arrangements that were done a decade ago. Nothing on this EP stands out. It's my opinion of course and it's worth about as much as a cracked CD case, but unless you're needing more background noise then you'd do well to spend your time elsewhere. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

Artist: Psychopod Title: Headlines EP Label: TIP Records Date: October, 1997 1. Re-Vision 2. Universal Mind 3. Stop The Carnage 4. Friagram 5. Dreampod (Video Edit) 6. Out of Your Mind This is such a detailed exploration into the world of dance music. Innumerable layers of psychedelia tumble over one another. Like Skeleton Man said, you want to dance to this, and I find myself nodding my head to it on multiple occasions through the track. But every time I want to dance the depth of what they created forces me to sit down. To sit down and contemplate how the human mind could attain this level of...expression. The creativity is off the charts with zero opportunity to catch your breath. Re-Vision has to be the alien anthem. Fantastic. Stop the Carnage is a 10 minute opus that is so vivid and psychedelic I can't follow it. It's too much. Like chocolate brownie bits in double chocolate ice cream. Love it, but my mortal senses can only process so much awesome. Friagram is acidic mayhem, relentless in it's twirling. When the break hits (and it's ever so brief) it's like the oxygen has been sucked from your lungs and you're afraid the beat won't return. But it does. The one thing I don't understand is why not include the entire Psychopod track? There was room on the CD if I'm not mistaken and I'm sure they weren't concerned with us being able to process too much psychedelia. To me that is the only flaw of this EP and the only thing keeping this from being the greatest psychedelic goa trance CD of all time. Mdk

Very psychedelic indeed. Pumping, bubbling sounds that twist for what seems an eternity. "Electronic Sound Holograms" Mdk

Always happens. As soon as I wrote I hadn't received the CDs the postman drives up the snowy driveway and hands me the CDs. Thank you Anjuna, all that was required was a little patience on my part. Hope you get the Israeli post sorted out. Now let's see what this Moonweed music is all about. Mdk

Allow me to be the fly in your chardonnay. While I found the Solaris, Morphem, and Satori tracks to be good, I'm not tumbling over myself to throw out the hyperbole. My favorite here is Liquid Lifeform and Ultrasonic Heartbeat. Two tracks full of psychedelic bubbling and driving rhythms. The last bit of the compilation goes heavily into what I like to call experimental goa. Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Deep Impact Label: Odd Records Date: November, 2005 1. Wrecked Machines - Creep 2. BLT - Anything You Want (Zen Mechanics Remix) 3. Quantic Fusion - Elements 4. Cyrus The Virus - The Prophecy 5. Altom - The Persuaders 6. Alternative Control - Commercial Hit 7. Freaked Frequency - Hippi 8. Suria - MD 64 Beats 9. V-Storm - Survivor Who's ready for some full-on? F*ck yeah Manchester! Anyone? Look I know it's not cool to listen to this type of psytrance. The vast majority of it is formulaic and derivative getting nowhere like a three legged dog. So yeah...not cool. Like bumping some Billy Squier at your kids high school. In a jean jacket. Leaning on a camaro. What a loser. But I have to hop between subgenres lest I get burned out and fed up. For that reason I'm all over the place. Think of me as a teacher. Just...with a lot more F word. The rule for me is to never dismiss anything out of hand as you certainly could miss something. And if you piss on this you'll miss out on some pretty good tracks. Wrecked Machines and the Zen Mechanics Remix straddle the psy/progressive line with good, bouncy tracks with some delicate touches. Great opening salvo which is unfortunately wasted after the Quantic Fusion and Cyrus the Virus diversions that remind me you can put a silk hat on a full on compilation, but yadda yadda yadda. With the soft vocal tacet on The Persuaders I had to grow a Taliban beard and yell at my wife for driving a car just to make sure I was a man. Commercial Hit is just that a commercial euphoric trance track full of melodies and bouncy acid leads. The whole thing is very shiny. And while I felt let down by the Suria track (no depth, just straight ahead), the Freaked Frequency one was varied and the V-Storm closer was a powerful punch in the gut. So it starts out very well, takes a nap in the middle, and then shines a bright, full-on light in your face before rattling some windows. Not bad. But a deep impact...I think you're reaching there. Artist: Various Title: Single Cell Label: Atomic Records Date: March, 2000 01. 06'25" Menis : Hamburger 02. 08'12" Aztec : Outer Breath 03. 07'24" Semsis : Storm In A Test Tube 04. 07'54" Psychaos : Techno Logical 05. 07'13" Voodoo People : Chronic 06. 07'43" Cydonia : Anaconda Part 2 07. 07'38" Nucleus : Dark Horse 08. 09'40" Solaris : Extra Mundane 09. 06'14" Morphem : Hypnotone (Rebuilt By Cydonia) "There are opportunities in life...for gaining knowledge and experience. Sometimes it's necessary to take a risk" Ecstasy...it can lead to some...questionable choices. I usually take a pass when it comes to the years 2000-2002. It was a gloomy time not just for psytrance. A black man was the best golfer in the world (coincidentally that is also about the time there was an uptick in doomsday preparations), the dot.com bubble broke wide open and people were losing their sh*t because they thought all the computers would shut down and they couldn't masturbate while firing up a chat room on AOL. It's just me, but psytrance during that period just wasn't interesting. However, when there is a dark techno element involved my ears perk up and I sit up a little straighter. I'm drawn to the dark, gritty sound that's layered with effects. Somehow I came across this and seeing how we're supposed to get a foot of snow today I figured it would be the perfect time to check in with the dark years. Atomic Reocrds apparently had a history of making psy with that very techno facet and it's the same here. All the tracks here were released on vinyl, but until this compilation never made it to the CD format. Regarding the music there is still that monotonous quality with the loops repeated, but the samples and dark atmosphere make it more interesting than your run of the mill early 2000's psytrance. Of note, Storm In A Test Tube is by Semsis is just what the doctor ordered with its acid licks and driving rhythm. Clearly the class of this compilation. Psychaos keeps it futuristic and hammers away with Techno Logical. Chronic by Voodoo People sounds extremely sinister The whole compilation seems to foreshadow a not too distant future of androids and cyber technology where corporations run everything and the huddled masses have little to be joyful about. Not a good life picture, but great music. Aside from some boring repetitive quality and the fact that the Cydonia tracks let me down this one was an enjoyable listen. Hardly essential, but good for a cloudy, stormy day. Mdk

I don't have a lot to add, but I will also agree that this is a keeper. Sure it's only 5 tracks, but they are deep, spiraling pieces of goa trance. You've heard them before, but it's nice to have them in one place. Swirling melodies, bubbling sounds...everything you need to take you to that perfect level of trance. Mdk

Cell : Spiritual Move 5. Solar Fields : Something Crystal 6. Toires : Nabab 7. Carbon Based Lifeforms : MOS 65100 8. Mystical Sun : Blue Magnetic Ocean 9. Solar Fields : Spiritual Ocean 10. Carbon Based Lifeforms : Metrosat 4 Smooth. "Titties!" Smoother. Yeah he can save the world, but get him around some pussy and he's a f*cking mess. Yep. Milhouse cool. This whole series reeks of fluidity and flow. All of the tracks are downtempo gems even though a lot of them are located elsewhere for the most part. To be honest I don't think the tracks are the best each of the projects have ever done, but they sound as crisp today as I imagine they did when they first came on the scene. They move from soft ambient to noisy chill, but they're so well done and the flow is excellent. The copy I have is the partially mixed repress from Ultimae and the blending of the tracks really helps carry the album along. I believe if you're a fan of downtempo or ambient then this entire series is a must in your collection.

Artist: Various Title: Trance Experience 3 The Psychedelic Files Label: Discobole Recordings Date: 1997 1. Subcouds - On Red 2. Shakta - Lepton Head (Deedrah Remix) 3. Crop Circles - Lunar Civilization 4. Cyan - Dying Seas 5. Sandman - Nostradamus 6. The Delta - As A Child I Could Walk On The Ceiliing 7. Radiotrance - Plasma 8. Elixis - Prismatic Man these old covers kill me. Androgynous mannequins bracketing a toxic beach ball as the world explodes into chaos all around them. Silly right? But it does capture the feeling of this compil HOLY F*CKING DONKEY BALLS DID SOMEONE PAY $227 FOR THIS CD? You've gotta be f*cking kidding me. Hope dude isn't on Discogs any longer otherwise he'll need to be on suicide watch. Buddha Homer would have advised patience. Because more recently it sold for under 15 bucks. And just that quickly you can go sh*tting rainbows to punching babies. Regarding the CD it's excellent. Really excellent. Chances are good that you probably have these tracks on more accessible and affordable albums. But that doesn't diminish how good this disc is. Twirling, melodic goa trance, pumping Delta style psytrance...you can't go wrong. The Sandman track is a bit of an industrial and symphonic thumper and I don't usually like his music, but this was good. Good depth. And of course you can never go wrong with Subcouds, Crop Circles and our old friend Lepton Head. How many people have mixed that? I'm waiting for the Taylor Swift version. *fingers crossed* But don't be like moneybags up there and drop rent for this disc. Friends shouldn't let friends surf Discogs on payday. Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Trance Mix 5 Label: BMI Records Date: 1995 1. Hallucinogen - LSD 2. Akasha - Ace of Wands 3. Moog - Euromotors 4. Baas Complex - Sample Your Mind 5. Moondust - Are We Alone 6. Slinky Wizard - Wizard 7. Union Jack - Cactus 8. Binary Xperience - Penguin 9. Digital Island - Cosmic Ocean Is this what I think it is? No...it can't be... Retro video game Centipede emanating from a floating pedestal sink amidst the barren Arizona desert? That's right. Trance Mix 5 *cacophonous crescendo!!!!!* What else could it be? Now the first thing you're probably going to notice is the opening track. Never heard it myself, but people say it has potential so I'll give it a listen. Most likely won't amount to much. After that things are not what they appear. Baas Complex is merely the mind behind Color Box with a sinister if not repetitive track. Just FYI though...I try not to mix my swirling goa with samples of deficit reduction and job creation. Kills the mood. Moondust is just those crazy Germans from X-dream. Plus one Cosmix. And Digital Island? Oh, Boris...I'd know you anywhere. Nice thumping beat and Om Shivaya chants. So after the dust has settled what you have is LSD and some of the greatest names in goa trance releasing one off tracks under different project names. It can sound a little dated, but after all it is early goa trance. They're not half bad (nor would I expect them to be) and it's probably why this compilation is so valuable. Well that and the super cool cover. *snicker* Is that an Ivan Richpa original early work? Mdk

Xploring. Inner. Space. Yeah...more like exploring the backs of my eyelids. This is a dated downtempo compilation that is high on repetition and weirdness, but lacks any sufficient panache. It's one of those where the music feels longer than it actually is and not one track stands above the rest. Well, I liked Sun Walker. The beat was hypnotic; clearly that one was made to nod your head. There are some slight goa touches, but they seem thrown in rather than a feature. Makes sense of course, look at the year it was made. Average stuff. Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Remixed Label: HOM-Mega Productions Date: April, 2005 1. Psysex - New Wave Hooker (Domestic & Pixel Remix) 2. Psysex - Altered States (X-Noize Remix) 3. Psysex - Come In Peace (Illumination Remix) 4. Psysex - L.S.Dance (Psysex Remix) 5. Psysex - Alien Cop (Eskimo Remix) 6. Psysex - High Times (Nick Remix) 7. Children of the Doc - Bionic Bong (GMS Remix) 8. Sex On Mushroom - Dirty 80's (Wrecked Machines Remix) 9. Psysex - New Wave Hooker (Violet Vision Remix) 10 Psysex & Star-X - Star Sex "Would you describe, in your own words, what happened that night." Who died? The reason I ask this is because when this was first recorded as sold on Discogs back in 2008 (three years after it's original release) it sold for a paltry $5.66 $5.66. My kids can't get a happy meal for that. Now it's common knowledge that people on Discogs can be somewhat delusional when setting an asking price. Admit it...it happens. They tend to overvalue. For example there is a user that is asking for $53 for this mid 2000's Israeli full-on. C'mon that's just off your meds ridiculous. Udi's grandma needs to get back to baking cookies and stay off the damn internet. I know he's your bubbie, but he'll be alright. However in November of 2014 it sold for $25. That's an increase in value of 442%. You don't get that kind of appreciation unless somebody is pushing up daisies. Trust me this Whitney Houston cocaine mirror is gonna put my kids through college. Too soon? So now I'm scouring the internet to see if Udi died and not appear like the biggest dick in the universe. Found his Facebook page and he recently celebrated a birthday so I'm guessing he's still of this Earth. Seems like a likable enough guy. But let's be honest this album is a compilation of Israeli full-on remixes that will stay with you about as long as dry fart. I would argue the cover is more well known than the music found inside. It's actually not that bad even though it's close to as full-on as you can get. I found it enjoyable in spots and really liked the breakbeat un-full-on Violet Vision Remix of New Wave Hooker. But an almost 450% increase in value? Either one of these artists kicked the bucket or someone's about to go full-on OJ. Mdk

Like your sister. BTW is she seein' anyone? Can you put in a good word for me? A lot of people seemed to have missed the boat when it first came out somehow labeling it boring. Call it goa saturation if you must...or perhaps too much weed. But this is the definition of psychedelic goa trance. This is the sh*t you're paying Anjuna and Zion $20 for. Without the two month shipping time. Tracks like Psychopod's Universal Mind is the shiny example. An absolute stormer of a track. Karma bounces and races, making me forget everything else Jeremy has done for 15 years. S.T.C. has that relentless goa melody which should appeal to everyone. Hyperspaced isn't bad and sure the original version of Soothsayer isn't as good as the Lysurgeon mix, but, but,...Hallucinogen? You wanna sh*t all over volume 3? Fine I'm on board. But if you and I see this at a second hand shop I'm gonna hip check you into easy listening so I can get my mitts on this. Nothing personal. Mdk

Definitely an album that will grow on you if you allow it to marinate and kick around the 'ol brain bucket. It's so emotional and packed with atmosphere. The sound and flow don't throw you into their tale, but gently guide you. This is dark melancholic cloud music. And I love it. Stunning from beginning to end. Mdk

Artist: Tristan Title: Way of Life Label: Nano Records Date: December, 2014 1. Talking In Technicolour (Dancefloor Deluxe Version) 2. Killerwatts - Another Planet (Tristan Remix) 3. Time and Space 4. Excitement Generator 5. Parallel Reality 6. Melody Maker 7. Multi-Dimensional Consciousness 8. Enlightenment 9. Fearsome Engine - Seeding Life (Tristan Remix) This dog inching his way along this train is a perfect metaphor for this album. There is a lot of motion and for the first few tracks I'm actually interested in what's going to happen. Tristan Cooke is not a newbie and knows what it takes to craft a psychedelic track. This is Nano style full-on that should captivate, but after a little bit I'm like..."Where the f*ck are you going dog?" I keep watching him claw his way to the front of the train, but he never gets there. Imagine one of your co-workers telling a joke he "heard" from a friend but drags it out because he can never quite remember how the story should go. Annoying. And time consuming Eventually you stop hovering around the donut table cause you know he's gonna be there. You don't need that. Eventually you need to get to the f*cking point. But all these tracks sound the same. No up...no down...just straight ahead. I listened to this four times in a row and fell asleep during three of them. The last time I actually fired up Candy Crush. Or put another way... We all love hand jobs. We do. But if there's no passion in it and I don't get to finish it's just a lot of uncomfortable tugging and awkward stares. I'm not saying this is an utter disaster because it's not. But I suppose based on past work I've come to expect a lot more from Tristan and this is just a ho-hum effort. Drug samples and lazy full-on ain't gonna cut it. So that's what this is to me. A listless hand in my pants that turned out to be a disappointing waste of time. Psyshop Beatspace Mdk

I actually just ordered it and it arrived about a week ago. This is a fabulous compilation of goa trance that continuously pushes the power ever forward. Melodies bleed like a head wound and I even like the California Sunshine track. Bom Shankar is super and when are we going to get a full length out of Laughing Skull? Great comp. $20 bucks well spent. MDK

Artist: System Nipel Title: Deep Into Matter Label: Trancelucent Productions Date: May, 2006 1. Dream Vision 2. Lift Me Up (Feat. Visual Contact) 3. Steal The Robot 4. Afronomical 5. Deep Into Matter 6. Fair Telly (Feat. Electro Sun) 7. Guest For The Future 8. Donkey Drunkey 9. The Misted Muppet - From the Legend (System Nipel Remix) 10. Unlimited (Chill Out Remix) Need I say more? It's cavity inducing full-on from a time when full-on threatened to choke the life out of anything psychedelic. This has more in common with euphoric trance than psy with galloping bass lines, cheesy melodies, and of course what would a full-on release from the mid 2000's be without some house-like vocal. I've heard worse, but if you take this in one big gulp you might want to make sure you have that insulin pump handy. I'd link to it, but as of this writing Psyshop and Beatspace are both out of stock. *Wipes tear* But lucky for you there are a few sellers on Discogs that would be happy to sell it to you for waaay too much money.
