Artist: Ephedra Title: Journey Through My Head Label: Goa Madness Records Date: October, 2014 1. We Are Not Alone 2. Beyond Spaces 3. Crispy Biscuits 4. Souls In Trance 5. The Walk of the Little Green Man 6. Little Molecules 7. Experiments 8. Bubblized 9. Smiling Sun (2013 Edit) Wow. Just...wow. Did anyone see this coming? Goa Madness Records is one of the new kids on the block and this label has had quite the beginning. Their first release was a compilation called Memories From Goa Madness. They played it safe and it was tried and true goa trance. Nah, it was better than that in this reviewer's opinion. So fresh off the success of that release they drop this bomb on us. This is the debut album of Alexandre Cohen and it is beautiful. So many swirling melodies and those acid sounds are verily delicious. Set your phasers to maximum twirling because this is a journey that catches you up and doesn't let go. Twists and turns abound and the sound is terrific. It's a full and rich atmosphere with screeching leads and layers of immeasurable beauty. I'm sorry I don't have anything funny to say or silly gifs to post. This is just a fantastic release and rightly deserves consideration for goa trance album of the year. Superb job my friend. Psyshop Beatspace Mdk

Artist: Lost & Found Title: Consumed Label: Self-Released Date: December, 2014 1. Consumed 2. Drone (feat. Z3ro) 3. Mental Wealth 4. Nitro (feat. CPU) 5. Other Side 6. Subterranean (feat. Deliriant) 7. Eraser 8. Wing In The Sand 9. Trails 10. Decay "Look at me...and tell me if you know me." Do you know what joy is? I suppose this gif of Imba caught fangirling when invited backstage to a One Erection concert certainly could qualify as his joy. However as a Suntrip DJ I'm sure he no longer carries on this way. Probably. Well, maybe. Actually this video was shot last week. But I'm talking about true joy. Joy that isn't fleeting. Joy that has been years in the making and doesn't change with the season. It's called porn Santa. Don't act so innocent you judgmental bastard. Like you aren't a reindeer fart from diddling the little people. This is Gerhard Oliver and he has delivered the album night time psytrance fans were hoping for. Decoder was fine and supplemented with additional tracks added later, but it was one of those albums that you felt could've been better. After absolutely stellar tracks on compilations I know I expected more from his debut. Like a man whose wife left him for another woman I was confused. Sad. Angry. Which drove me to several...unscrupulous habits *points to Santa* That guy knows what I'm talkin' about! Well after a couple years Gerhard is back and he dropped a new digital album a la Beyonce' right in your lap. But he did ya one better. It's free. Take that Queen B. And man it's a wild ride. The opening title track tells you all you need to know. Sound and fury. It's dark and throbbing (get the f*ck off me Santa) with an industrial flair that will blow the doors off. An album best listened to all the way through to swim in the murky atmosphere laden with high-tech effects. Thumping beats and Trent Reznor angst combine for a powerful journey. It's cold and futuristic. The tracks with other artists were particularly great including the added bonus of CPU awakening from his seemingly eternal cheese stupor. The last track is a dark ambient delight speaking of life after a scorched Earth military annihilation. While not perfect, it's certainly a great album. Another cool thing is that each track seems to have a different image tagged to it. Not a big thing but a nice little touch. Highly recommended. Psynews Link Mdk

Thank you Prana. Because of you I now sing "digga digga dagga dugga" to any track on the radio. And you know what...it makes a lot of them better. This compilation is an absolutely superb primer for those wishing to experience some of the best goa trance from the glory days. It's like Mind Rewind good except that all the tracks were readily available. Melodic, hypnotic, and powerful this is what they mean when they say more bang for your buck. It's sometimes dark or experimental, but always quality. Highly recommended. Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Psionic Ritual Label: Digital Psionics Date: December, 2013 1. Outer Signal Vs. Tickets - 254 Kilograms 2. Earworm - Energy Field 3. Khopat Vs. Smashed - Substances 4. Locked Locker - Substance D 5. Tantrum Vs. Catarsis - Force Field 6. Remove - Idea 7. Shuumat - Don't Shoot The Process 8. Rubix Qube Vs. Nevermachine - Definitely Dead 9. Rabdom L - Black Hole (Iliuchina Remix) 10. Dark Nebula - Sajuuk Khar "Do you understand what I'm saying? The whole system's gone...haywire." The label with the signature kissing door knocker is back with another chapter in the Psionic series. It's a digital twilight ride with a copious amount of acid, lasers, and well manipulated samples. Some tracks have a theatrical quality to them, but one common thread is dark power. It's what they do. Blistering tracks like Substances and Definitely Dead have that rapid pace and swirling energy. The girl interrupted sample in Substance D is delightfully twisted. Right up my alley. Most of this compilation is top notch with only a few misses near the end. Great sound and furious energy. Welcome back Digital Psionics! Beatport Mdk

Artist: Rubix Qube Title: Dark Continent Label: Spectral Records Date: May, 2012 1. Dark Continent 2. Sneaky Snake Eyes 3. Important Announcement 4. Brain Wave 5. Not Physically Possible 6. Demon Speeding 7. No Time 8. 7 Deadlies "This is not physically possible." Yet here we are. Rubix Qube is Kieron Grieve and I don't think he gets the accolades he deserves. Another South African churning out quality South African psytrance that simply flies under the radar. His album Ulterior Motives and the EP Saturate are prime examples of quality night time goodness. With this album there is a techno influence that he blends seamlessly with the power he's known for. It's chunky and metallic at times, but he can also buttsmack you with eminently danceable grooves. The tracks are frequently evolving, but with none of that repeated start and stop nonsense. Thank you. No really...thank you. When he thinks it's time for some hip gyrations he stays with the rhythm. Samples are well placed, but not overdone and the guitar he uses is not of the cheesy variety. It's got some bite. Also his bass lines are the type you can feel in your chest. Sneaky Snake Eyes is bad ass psychedelia, Not Physically Possible is acidic funkiness (dirty morning dry mouth made out with middle aged smoker chick funky), and any time you can essentially remix a Rob Zombie track...well that's a gold escalator to Heaven with zero waiting as far as I'm concerned. Haven't heard a heavy remix this good since sHiFt demolished Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson. And to end with 7 Deadlies? A track that magnificently changes shape like so much smoke is f*cking fantastic. I think I got carpel tunnel from hitting the repeat button on that one. Beatport Mdk

Artist: Algae Bloom Title: The Blossom Label: Sun Station Records Date: November, 2013 01 - Stop Thinking (130 BPM) 02 - Nothing Is Static (130 BPM) 03 - Healing Drum (with Stereofeld) (132 BPM) 04 - Cloud Walker (130 BPM) 05 - String Theory (130 BPM) 06 - Everyone Is Invited (128 BPM) 07 - Alga Tinge (130 BPM) 08 - Thank You (130 BPM) 09 - Weirderer (132 BPM) I listen to a lot of stuff, but there is no way I can get to it all. That's why recommendations are so helpful. I would've walked right past this release if a kind soul hadn't asked me to give it a listen. Thank you kind soul. Because this is one release you shouldn't miss. Ukrainian Max Kurushyn has delivered something special here he refers to as daypsy. The progressive trance is very detailed and melodic not unlike something you would find from the major labels. There is no wasted space just sounds in every measure that surround you like a warm blanket. Danceable at times with some tactile layering. I would say it's an album that doesn't have any tracks that are head and shoulders above the rest or ones that you'll never forget, but the overall quality and depth is extremely high. The flow is continuous with well timed breaks that are lush and organic. This is one of those albums that I'll put on with the intention of listening to one or two tracks and the next thing you know I'm sucked into digesting the whole album. Again. Like progressive trance? You need to hear this. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

Artist: Oood Title: Breathing Space Label: O.o.o.d. Records Date: 1999 1. Heliopause 2. Ciderspace 3. Find Your Mind 4. Spangled 5. Sandoz 6. The Unwinding Mind 7. Jot Bodom 8. Hartley's Ambient Jam Bit of a close talker aren't you? Would a tic tac kill you? We all need our breathing space. And after this project released the absolute classic Alive maybe they needed some space to explore their sound. Always eclectic this album is nothing like its predecessor. Case in point? Hartley's Ambient Jam. The last track is part dub, part ambient journey that sounds nothing like their previous stuff. Maybe mushrooms are needed to really "get it?" Nope, still don't get it. But why does the ceiling have arms and legs? And it's dripping. Slowly...so slowly. Omigod! It's gonna fall into my mouth. Can't...get...away. But the whole album is different and I mean that in a good way. The uptempo first half is a blend of psy and goa that shows their creative depth. Heliopause sets the tone as a psy/goa hybrid with continuous evolution. Ciberland is a quality psy track. There is some growl in Spangled and Sandoz rips and soothes during the break. The last three were exercises in experimentation moving between downtempo, ambient breakbeat, dub...you name it. They didn't thrill me as much as the upbeat stuff, but kudos to them for throwing something different out there. So it's not Alive II, but there is still a lot to like. Mdk

After listening to this again it's still good, deep psytrance. Especially for 2003. A little shine has come off the diamond so I cannot call it a classic, but I would still put it up there as one of the better full-on efforts. His later albums Circadians and LoveTechnology were superior to my ears. Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Pure Planet Vol. 2 Label: Kagdila Records Date: May, 2007 1. Afgin- communicate 09:00 2. Afgin- cosmic meditate 09:27 3. Afgin- old is gold 08:19 4. Chi A.D.- black light 08:01 5. Chi A.D.- blue effect 11:13 6. Filteria- operation pulse (live rmx) 11:20 7. Filteria- ultimator (ultimated rmx) 10:12 8. Omegahertz- atea 06:48 Everything here is awesome. From the layered melodies of Afgin through the wizardry of Chi-AD right up to the controlled chaos of Filteria. Omegahertz is an acquired taste that I haven't yet...acquired, but even though his track doesn't compare to the previous ones it's not terrible. Rarely do you see a CD that is quality from A to Z, but this one nails it. Don't hesitate to purchase this. Highly recommended. Psyshop Beatspace Mdk

Artist: Eyal Iceman Title: Blast From the East EP Label: Sita Records Date: April, 2014 1. Blast From The East 2. Eternal Tribulations 3. Return To The Classix The Iceman is back! Tommy...(inhales deeply and exhales slowly) I swear to God if you weren't my sister's kid I would've fired you a long time ago. Now...could you please get me the right f*cking image before I lose my patience? Get out! Get out! Get the f*ck out!!! *throws stapler* And tell your mother you call that a meatloaf? I could've thrown that hard sh*t on the fire place! So...very...hard to find good help these days. Eyal was a pillar of the Nitzhonot community from back in the day and he's back with a three track EP from the current czar of nitzho Sita Records. The opening track is a quality blend of goa and Nitzhonot with warm and swirling melodies. Like all the tracks it's over 10 minutes and travels at a million miles an hour. Eternal Tribulations has a sound that is more nitzh with super fast melodies rising and falling. lead sounds change frequently with a very Infected Mushroom style near the end. Hyper, energetic, fun stuff. Back To The Classix is the longest track at almost 15 minutes! That's almost a f*cking sitcom. He was obviously attempting to ease us into things before he came out in full beserker nitzhonot mode. Felt like I was at my cousin's Bat Mitzvah. The layers seemed to be kept at a minimum while the melodies raced around hairpin turns. It's all a little too old testament for me. But I think that anyone who makes this type of trance knows there is a degree of cheese inside and to take it with a wink and a nod. But it's fun stuff and made for good times. Beatport Psyshop Mdk

Iron Madness - Jihad Of Islam (Rmx) 05. Wizack Twizack – Sweeden Weeden 2 06. Sungirl vs. Iron Madness – Madness Of Sun 07. Xatrik – Waki Tabacci 08. Slug – Break Out 09. Psyboriginal vs. Daheen – Freak (Rmx) 10. Tryambaka & D_Maniac – La Cosa Nostra "If there's trouble...all us freaks have...is each other." Preach brother. There are two fantastic tracks for me on this compilation. Pondscum's Formal Absence of Precious Things is a churning, psychedelic monster of a forest track. So bubbly and deep with layers this brute does not let up. The other one is Slug's Break Out which is also psychedelic, but more melodic with a healthy dose of groove. The rest for the most part are good without being great. The cover art (as others have mentioned) is also impressive and was the first thing that actually caught my eye. Wish this label was still around. Beatspace Mdk

Artist: Maiia303 Title: Sky In Diamonds Label: Ovnimoon Records Date: September, 2014 1. Sunday Morning 2. Duality 3. Sky In Diamonds 4. Moonlight Pixies 5. Go Ask Yourself (feat. Cybered) 6. Universe 7. Atman 8. Neverland 9. Glory Bored with goa trance and psy in general? Feel that you'll never get that fresh feeling again? Well here is a cool breeze from the magic factory known as Ovnimoon Records. Where the hell did this come from? Bird sounds, real drums, flutes, and a heaping helping of 303's? Maiia (extra I for interesting) is Alla Vagner and she has spent most of her career in the downtempo genre, but with this release focuses on a more progressive style with real instruments combined with old school melodies. And boy do those 303's pop! It's not aggressive, but more laid back. The combination of electronics and real world instruments is refreshing and gives the music a more organic feel. Sure it's not the first time goa has been packaged this way, but timing is everything. Aside from the uber happy first track the rest are tunes you can get lost in. Great stuff, you should check it out. Hey, Renato put this on my wishlist! Psyshop Beatspace Mdk

Dickster - Slide (Groovy People Remix) 5. Azif Ewuz - Hyperdelic 6. Jumanji - In Da Jungle 7. Eskimo & DJ Vlado - Jinja Ninja 8. Eskimo - Party Pooper 9. Dynamic - Virus Infection 10. Gundam - The Strike "Got a machine head, better than the rest!" Machine Head by Bush in the 90's was the mother f*cking jam! Decked out in Timberland boots and a flannel shirt I was ready for a night out. A decade later a new machine head erupted onto the scene which quickly had me dusting off my Pearl Jam CD's. But this ain't grunge. It's just...grungy. Full-on by the usual suspects. From 2004. Let that sink in for a minute. Hindsight is always 20/20, but for God's sake the first track is called Show Me The Money. Looks like it pays to be the progeny of John Phantasm cause his boy is all over this thing. That said there are some bright moments. Jumanji's In Da Jungle being one of them. Wait did I say moments? Clearly I misspoke. This is like boner pills for full-on lovers. Music like this makes labels like Compact Records wake up with night sweats. Virus infection? Isn't that redundant? Bah, this whole f*cking compilation is redundant. Clearly this is for lovers of carbon copy cut 'n' paste full-on only. So...when's Nirvana getting back together? Mdk

Artist: E-Mantra Title: Echoes From the Void Label: Altar Records Date: November, 2014 1. Echoes From the Void 2. Everything Ends 3. Snow Began To Fall 4. E-Mantra & Reasonandu - Words You Said 5. Stillness of Dawn 6. Sundial Aeon - Drifting Radio Frequencies (E-Mantra Remix) 7. Moon Drifter 8. Night Hex - Invocation 9. Shivers Art. You painted a f*cking soup can. Good for you. I can go to Food Lion and see six pallets of those. That's just my 2 cents. Drugs are bad, okay? Still think that last tab of acid was a good idea? But at least your shoes are pink so...awareness and sh*t. Ho-lee-sh*t. You just painted a picture of your dirty feet. How many millions did that sell for? These are just a few examples of why you can't judge what is art and what isn't. Eye of the beholder. Even though the above are just some random examples and seem ridiculous to me I am not the end all and be all of opinions. Like you I have one and it's no more or less accurate than yours. Well, maybe yours (points to guy with the dirty feet.) Take a shower man this ain't Woodstock. Art is subjective. And artists regardless of medium tend to be some odd f*ckers. Might be what sets them apart from the rest of the normals. I imagine Emmanuel is no different. Don't know him, but what I do know is that in his chosen medium he can do no wrong. Having already conquered goa he has almost done the same to psychill. Echoes From the Void is his fourth album in the downtempo genre and surprise surprise he explores new territory. The first half of the album is an ambient experience exploring mystical soundscapes. Ideal for waking up early and catching the rising sun from atop some lofty snow capped peak. Which is what I would've done if I didn't have kids. Floating voices soar and echo above warm pads as he slowly brings you along. Measured break beats keep the tempo whilst hypnotic melodies lull you into a dream state. Words You Said is the first surprise being more uplifting than his usual moody downtempo style. The second half of the album is progressive trance with a few showcasing the goa style we have come to expect from this artist. His Nighthex alias in particular produced a very enjoyable track. E-mantra is goa trance first and foremost, but he has also proven himself in the downtempo and ambient genre. With this album he explores the progressive arena with fine results. He's an artist that I hope continues to stretch his creative imagination as we the listeners will all be the better for it. Highly recommended to add to your E-mantra collection. Altar Bandcamp Mdk

Envelope (live mix) Exactly. My God it's cringe worthy at times. Most times. If good music is a meal this is a f*cking pixie stick. Euphoric trance taken to cosmically absurd extremes. Especially the tracks with the vocals in them. Ugh...makes you feel bad for this guy. Like a lot of you I like to play my music loud in the car, but the corn levels here are off the chart. I can't take that kind of ridicule. I realize there was atrocious full-on before this, but this is so bad it deserves it's own after school special. There were some tunes that I used to enjoy back in the day. But like footie pajamas and underoos I've outgrown it. Mdk

Prism Vs. Phibian - The Probe 7. The Hoax - Fabrication 8. RAM - Illumination 9. Ozrels Machine - Destrukt (Scorb Rmx) Potty training sucks. It really does. I don't remember having this much trouble and stress with the first child. God knows it sucks that's why he blesses you with the power of short memory. We are right there, right at the precipice of not having to deal with diapers. It's so close I can almost taste it. Really I can feel it. And I did. Kid was playing with the Kindle on my bed, leaning on my legs whilst I attempted to grab a few winks. After multiple denials of having to use the potty, I force her to go. That's when I felt it. Through her pants, on my pants, all over the comforter to the sheet and even on the cooling layer. If you're a parent then you've probably been there. I swear nothing is safe when you have kids. I mean do you have any idea how long it takes to dry a comforter and sheets? As I'm standing there berating this poor 3 year old and comparing her to a dog that pees wherever the f*ck it wants to I realize I've gone to far. It's very stressful and I'm learning that there isn't a lot of reasoning with a 3 year old. Ahhh....this too shall pass. So anyway this is basically Scorb and all the people he invited to the studio to muck around. And I'm telling you he should stick with this formula. It's stomping good twilight psytrance with a groovy sway. Evolving melodies and well timed breaks make this fun to listen to. Hell I'll put it out there...this is the best thing I've heard from Mr. Connor. Artists like Concept, Deviant Species and Neural Rectifier Syndrome bring scratchy sounds and acid splatters creating a futuristic mix. It's got a dark flow that remains consistent through the entire album. Stratagem is one of my favorites as it is rumbler that grows in intensity, slowly building with some wicked power. I highly recommend it and even though it was made 6 years ago it holds up well. Psyshop Beatspace Mdk

Artist: Ascent Title: I Will Fly Again Label: Goa Records Date: January, 2013 1. Purple Moon 2. Himalayas 3. Sense of Touch 4. Mystical Forest 5. Tear Drops (feat. Sideeffected) 6. When The Night Comes I don't have my finger on the pulse of the psytrance scene. I've never attended a party or met an artist or DJ. I have read Mushroom Magazine a couple of times, but there was a lot of words and half of it was in Dutch and I got bored. I prefer to let the music speak to me. This is after all "trance" in various forms so it should capture my attention and take me to another place. And this guy continues to do this. Ascent is Bojan Stojiljkovic abd he has released a bunch of EP's that I am sorting through as well as numerous albums. And so far everything I've heard has been magical. Transformative. Conscious raising. Whether it's progressive trance or downtempo and ambient with his brother Argus the detail captivates. Lush is an understatement and he does so much with simple bass lines. The melodies are gentle and comforting and can be uplifting or ominous. And a surefire way to hook me? Give your music a bit of goa flavor. I imagine progressive is approaching the saturation point where it becomes a punch line much the same way full-on did. Where so much of it was being produced that it all began to sound the same. Eyes would roll and groans would sound. Maybe. Like I said I don't have the word on the street, but as long as beautiful music like this is being created I'm still gonna listen. Go ahead...make fun of me and roll your eyes. I can take it. Psyshop Beatport Mdk

Artist: Slinky Wizard Title: Slinky Wizard EP Label: Flying Rhino Records Date: 1994 1. Wizard 2. Lunar Juice 3. The Rising The very first release from goa powerhouse label Flying Rhino is remarkable for not only it's quality, but also because of when it first came out. Twenty years ago and it still sounds super fresh. That's how you create a classic release. Wizard is a deep psychedelic goa monster that really is timeless. Is it just me or does the melody sound like the one found in Hallucinogen's LSD? It would make sense since Simon was involved with this project. Lunar Juice (which also had Simon's hand upon it though not the more well known Moon Strudel Mix) growls like a ferocious cat and again doesn't sound dated at all. The Rising is filler compared to the first two tracks, but even that one is still a pretty good one. Mdk

Artist: Slinky Wizard Title: Witch Juice EP Label: Flying Rhino Records Date: 1996 1. Slick Witch 2. Lunar Juice (Hallucinogen Moon Strudel Mix) Not a whole lot to say about this release. Well except that it's psychedelic goa trance at it's finest! The second EP from Slinky Wizard where both tracks bring shrieking melodies and bludgeoning power making them a force to be reckoned with. They were released on CD compilations that most of you probably already have. Spectral Blue 8. Meteor 9. Renania 10. Love Is Not A Crime 11. The Prayer 12. Journey Into The Subconscious 13. Mind Of God 14. Gajin Rocker 15. The Self 16. Solar Noir 17. Tune Up 18. Psycho Acoustics 19. Bodhisatva 20. Freedom "And suddenly I was thrown into this expansive, amazing feeling...of freedom." Boris Blenn doesn't have to do sh*t. He doesn't have to prove sh*t. Psytrance Jesus practically invented the genre that allows talentless artists to make crappy full-on and believe they're Tiesto. You could argue he and a select few paved the way for those who would come after, and that without him the genre wouldn't be the same. This album celebrates his two decades in the game and is a great cross section of his huge and impressive body of work. Beginning with his best goa selections like Electronic Pulsation, Galaxia, and of course Online Information. Then not unlike the entire scene at the time he took a nap during his more experimental phase with with tracks like Spectral Blue and Renania. This is where I catch a few ZZzzzz.... Then after a few selections from his awesome album Cosmic Experience each he supplants himself in full-on territory. And I don't think he's moved since. I'll chalk his Higher Modes album up to bad drugs, a vengeful hooker (we've all been there, am I right?) or a throbbing case of not giving a f*ck. Once Boris released Cosmic Experience each subsequent album had the same style. Track names? Why the f*ck you gotta bring that up? At this point you either love where his music is or tire of hearing the same track ad nauseum. With his goa days long behind him this style of full-on is what he does and what the younger trancers know him for. The last track is from Journeys Into Space (haven't heard it yet) and it sounds even more cosmic and euphoric if that is at all possible. This is a great double CD of material and an adequate representation of his musical catalog. I don't think you can go wrong with it especially if you consider yourself a fan of his later stuff.
