Artist: Bell Size Park Title: Shroom Hunt Label: Timewarp Records Date: July, 2013 1. The Shroom Hunt 2. Interceptor 2013 3. Shambala 4. Goa Child (Into The Matrix mix) Bell Size Park used to be a trio that released an album called the Truth is There back in 96. I've never heard it so I can't comment on it. But these days it's a one man outfit. In 2011 he released Escape From Planet X EP on Dimensional Records which was psytrance and it didn't thrill me. Now here he is with his latest on ridiculously prolific Timewarp Records and this one I like. Most of it is a psy/techno hybrid with some goa elements. Evolving and constantly changing he shows his skill and it's pretty good. It sounds cold and very metallic with the exception of the title track. The Shroom Hunt is a page right out of the old school playbook with a very active and nimble 303. Easily my favorite of the EP. Nice work. Beatport Juno Download Mdk

Artist: Screw Loose & Lunar Dawn Title: Mental Well Being EP Label: Timewarp Records Date: Coming Soon 1. Screw Loose & Lunar Dawn - Big Crunch 2. Lunar Dawn - Ananke (Screw Loose Remix) 3. Screw Loose - Mind Jelly "It's as old as the solar system yet we've found that it contains the building blocks of life." It's a good time to be a fan of goa trance. Techniques are better, sound quality is improved...It wasn't that long ago where we were treated with only a few releases a year. There are several reasons for this, but any Dj will tell you that playing goa trance isn't going to support a Faberge Egg obsession. Maybe not even a three egg omelet habit. Thanks to labels such as Suntrip, DAT Records, Cronomi, and Zion 604 new releases are much more common keeping that spinning top going. Enter the next level of distribution and digital labels like Neogoa, UAF, and Timewarp have our proverbial cups running over. Timewarp is the newest one and has already released a string of quality goa trance EP's not to mention The Call of Goa compilation and Magnetic Field by Tavi. Sasa Dukic (better known as Psilocybian) is one of the best psytrance producers you should be listening to. His latest effort Dreamtime will be out in October and let me tell you it's off the hook. Like all great artists he isn't content to just be good, he apparently likes to challenge himself. So here as Screw Loose he teams up with Lunar Dawn (and oh yeah doesn't he have an album on the horizon?) on a three track goa EP. Mushrooms? Is that Fred Astaire? On crumpled canary paper? O...Kay. His bubbling and invasive form of psytrance serves him well. Nothing too fancy, he stays in his comfort zone with layered melodies designed to entrance. It's well produced and sounds crystal clear. They refrain from going over the top and leave the cheese in the fridge. Call it subtle goa more interested in soaking you in atmosphere and building a track rather then firing you into the clouds. I also found that the more I kept listening to it, the more I liked it. This guy is so good he could make f*cking yodeling album and I think I would get it. Until then, get some mental well being. Me likey. Coming Soon! Mdk

Artist: GoaTree Title: The Force EP Label: Neogoa Date: May, 2013 1. Ray Subject - Nanoverse (GoaTree Remix) 2. Mementos Mortis 3. The Force 4. Sleeper 5. The Prayer There's a goa tree now? This it? Ents...do things...very...slowly. You just read that in the Ent voice didn't you? First I've heard of him. But leave it to Ivan and Neogoa to uncover the good stuff. Released at the same time as Slow Tachyon by SoulQuark if it is even half as good it's another bucket of win. Nanoverse- I've heard some Ray Subject tracks in the past but they've long faded from memory. This is a good remix that captures the old school style reminiscent of the OOOD sound back when he was all up in your goa ear hole. Memento Mortis- This one kinda drags. Not terrible by any stretch, but it's been done many times before. I did like the end when he began to pile on the layers. Somewhat sinister. Just took too long to get to that point. But don't fade on me...it gets better. The Force- "The force is what gives the Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together." "Down, sh*t is going." And there you are with the Yoda voice. It's actually a performance enhancing drug. Undetectable by even the most corruptible IOC official. A great track. It's how you do some dark bad assery. Thumping rhythms and quality knob twiddling. Great ending too. Sleeper- Once you get past the cringeworthy sample you're in for a pretty good track. But you gotta get past it. And if you manage to push through the gag reflex (like when one eats hummus) the end has another sample to make sure it's full spew ahead. This one gets skipped every time cause I'm tired of dry heaving. The Prayer- You magnificent bastard. This is a helluva pumping good time. Bollywood-esque vocal? I feel like an Indian pimp who can't pronounce his v's. I haven't heard a prayer this good since electronic universe (winks at Radi). This was a quality EP. Storming goa trance that ushers in a new name to the scene. Way to go Neogoa! Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

There are things in this world that appeal to me. Things that break the rule of everything in moderation. Like chocolate. Chocolate Moose. Like, sh*t I dunno...huge cans. "I'm trying to look you in the eyes, but boobs don't have eyes damnit!" Huge cans covered in chocolate. Like you guys (who probably like these things as well) there are things that I like that never get old. And a double CD chock full of bubbling and outerspace goa trance is one of them. Storming and melodic it seemed like each track was better than the next. And look at the track list. The names in the genre are represented and while that's not a guarantee of quality it sure does help knowing what they are capable of. And for me they deliver one of the best compilations of goa trance I've ever heard. Have we become so jaded that thumping tracks from the best in the business are met with casual indifference? I can understand the primary reviewer's fatigue I suppose. *whispers* "No I can't" It didn't speak to him and whilst I don't agree with many of his grades or characterizations I certainly respect his opinion. Music is all about taste and thank God we all have different ideas regarding the matter. I found the Artifact303 tracks superb and the E-mantra stuff sounds like the brilliance from his albums. Radical Distortion crafting a track attempting to capture the essence of UX? Sorry I don't see the down side here. Perhaps it doesn't get the attention it deserves because it is a Russian label? Blowback from Vladimir Putin and his questionable artwork? A cat from the back? I guess you could call it that. Picture several KGB agents in a submarine: "I draw women's clitoris but call it cat from the back. A joke only we shall understand!" *big belly laugh without smiling.* A release like this...bursting with shimmering leads and swirling melodies is a welcome addition to my collection. Artist: Various Title: Replicants Vol. III Label: Replicant Records Date: June, 2013 1. Menog & Chromatone - Who Are We? 2. Earworm - Back In Play 3. Khopat - Adapting 4. Ex-Gen - Zombification "Drugs might actually cause people to wake up." I wasn't familiar with this label, but once I heard Audio Discharge they had my attention. Looking at the covers for their releases they seem to have a fascination with Satan and gas masks. Whatever you're into I suppose. Have you seen the Terror Lab Industries fetish? Oy. All four of these tracks are great. Let me state that out front. However two great tracks are bookended by two f*cking outstanding smashers. The first and last tracks are absolute acidic sodomy. Menog & Chromatone pound home that we ain't in Kansas anymore while Ex-Gen has become my favorite twilight artist. This will get the blood pumping. Beatport Mdk

I can see it being a combination of all three. Some of the sounds can seem harsh and metallic, but the melody at around 3 and a half minutes seems delicate to me. The chopped strings after 6 minutes definitely felt soothing to these ears. I think it's cool that there are different opinions on this one track. Mdk

Fully agree that the three that I mentioned were not of the same quality when it came to complexity of production. I only meant that they were stepping stones. Mdk

Artist: Vibe Tribe Title: Wise Cracks Label: Utopia Records Date: April, 2006 1. Wise Cracks 2. Dream Catcher 3. Carousel 4. Three Quarters 5. Lfobia 6. The Brain.B.Q 7. Bad Habbits 8. Pulse 9. Memories 10. The Sperminator (Vibe Tribe rmx) I remember liking this CD. I do. I also remember getting up early on Saturday to watch cartoons. But I grew up and decided I'd rather sleep in than see what the Smurfs were up to. And I grew out of this. It is the most melodic and over the top stuff I can recall hearing. If it came out today it would no doubt be blasted for being ridiculously cheesy. Not that Vibe Tribe were known for anything else. That said their brand of full on was high paced and appealing. Say what you will their music was constantly changing so at least it was different phrases of melodic cheese. The part in Carousel near the end where the synth sounds like it's laughing is beyond silly. Yet the acid that preceded it was great. I treat Vibe Tribe the same way I treat Dynamic, Perplex, and Alien Project. Disposable projects that first got me interested in this genre of music. A stepping stone if you will. So in that respect I owe them a debt of thanks. But uh, no...I can't listen to this album straight through without a note from my doctor. Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Sideffect Label: Psynews Date: July, 2013 01 - Paul Eye & Olisan - Daikaisho (132 BPM) 02 - Hierophant - Intergalactic Love Song (133 BPM) 03 - Zero Point Module - Chromatic Fail (147 BPM) 04 - Kacid - Confusing Patterns (148 BPM) 05 - Saluberrimae - Fl0ating (120 BPM) 06 - Radioactive Sandwich - Sound Vibration Technique (75 BPM) 07 - Seismic Activity - Revelation (140 BPM) 08 - Imba - Moon Tribe (142 BPM) 09 - Lapsus - Normality (147 BPM) 10 - PhonoPhora - Phunnel (Version 1.1) (87 BPM) I didn't really know Koen. Spoke to him a few times and the conversations were always pleasant. But when you're used to "seeing" somebody as active as he was in the Psynews forum suddenly...not be there...it's a shock. I don't know the details of his passing nor do I feel I should. All I can hope for is that he found peace wherever he is. As the promo says this was a contest where members of the Psynews community submitted tracks in a bid to be featured on a compilation. I don't know if this was always planned to be dedicated to Koen or not, but it's a nice gesture and one I imagine he would have appreciated. Voted on by the community this is the result. Mastered by Deimos and artwork by Gasolin3, it's ten tracks of varying bpm's and numerous genres. Daikaisho- The first track is a gentle progressive trance number that is a nice opener and helps to ease you into this compilation. Soft melodies and bubbling sounds. Intergalactic Love Song- Didn't Stone Temple Pilots have a hit with...oh, that was Interstate. So obviously we're going bigger. Strong beat and smooth electric piano with long sweeps make this a pumping progressive track. Chromatic Fail- A galloping futuristic darkish track with metallic leads. Not bad. Confusing Patterns- Really like the deep bass line, it's got quite the rumble. It's a forest track with a lush atmospheric feel. Sticky synth sounds abound as the sound manipulation moves full force. Two really good breaks as well. What are they saying? Fl0ating- Smooth and oscillating downtempo that has spiraling leads in a goa fashion. The break felt organic when all the synths dropped out, nice touch. Sound Vibration Technique- And now a track by the very busy Sandwich! Dubby vibes slowly make their way across a picturesque beach. Strings are plucked, vocals are chopped...It'll keep your head nodding. Revelation- Good goa trance track that twists the cutoff knob for all it's worth. Once it gets going it's pretty powerful. Moon Tribe- I believe Imba was the winner of this contest. With this track he stokes the conspiracy fire as the sample about UFO's plays out. Normality- Lapsus delivers the best track of the compilation with a shimmery and ominous effort. Most aggressive also. Very cosmic and one that will hurtle you through hyperspace. Phunnel (Version 1.1)- Closing the compilation is a downtempo track that morphs into a deep trance track. Also very dreamy as the dance of the galaxy marches on. I didn't feel it was proper to crack jokes on a compilation that was meant to be reverential. Just didn't feel right. This is a nice gesture to honor a member of our community. While not the strongest compilation you will hear it shows how much talent is on this forum. With almost an hour and a half of music tracks from different genres are well represented and as a member of this forum I'm happy to have given this a listen. I hope you enjoyed it Koen. Artist: Shantifax Title: Complete Tranceformation Label: SarnarSchourt Records Date: March, 2013 01 - Awake (120 BPM) 02 - Aum (90 BPM) 03 - Concrete Combination (100 BPM) 04 - Amygdala on diamonds (130 BPM) 05 - Rudra (138 BPM) 06 - Stone Steps (124 BPM) 07 - Karma Never Forgets (102 BPM) 08 - Be Human (120 BPM) 09 - The Same (104 BPM) 10 - Northern Lights (140 BPM) Wow. That's a big f*cking image. This is Klaus Balzarek with his sophomore album. That is all. Awake is a nice spiritual opener that sets the table. Aum has a dirty hip hop groove like I'm about to go put in some work and catch these fools slippin. Damn it feels good to be a gangsta...But it's hard to feel like a gangsta with that damn Buddhist chanting. Can we do another run through? Concrete Combination has a couple of good beats but I found it much less powerful and a little aimless. The percussion was top notch though. Kinda felt like I was high and things were happening around me in which I had zero control. Amygdala On Diamonds is more hallucinating while sh*t happens around me. Minimal and boring. Maybe if I was high. Unless my reads this in which case you guys are a bunch of drug addicts who need help. Stop trying to corrupt me. Love you honey. Rudra has more chanting. Sense a theme? Exotic instruments fire away in a mid tempo groove which I suppose would be good for meditating. Stone Steps is another tribal ambient offering and I wish the album was a lot more of this. It's lush and full of feeling. Karma Never Forgets - Shoulda used your right foot. Karma never forgets, but I will. And this minimalistic progressive stuff makes it easy. Be Human- See every track here with a beat. The Same- Oprah can't believe you described your whole album in a track title. He finally ends this disappointing album with a hopeful and very positive downtempo piece that sounds very relaxing. Northern Lights sounds like the forest bursting with life after a cleansing thunderstorm. Meh, I was hoping for more. A lot more. When I first heard Aum I thought he was going to combine hip-hop beats with tribal elements, but that's not what happened. He does dip his toes in a lot of genres (progressive and tribal mainly), but it didn't really stand out to me. It just kinda went. The scope is large however with huge pads and a deeply spiritual feel and I believe he excels in the ambient stuff. It just seemed to have more gravitas than the minimally boring stuff. Cue sad price is right music. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

"Beyond that black hole...a point where time and space as we understand it no longer exists." Listening to this now and if you realize that today everything old is new again, a la Zion604 and DAT Records, this isn't that bad. Of course you have Miranda's Gnocchi and Mutate and Survive by Somaton, but some of the lesser known tracks really bring it. Like Xone by MOS and Boxed by Tufaan. Sneaky and sharp little skullf*ckers if you ask me. Perhaps people were disappointed with this because they were ready to move on from goa (insane). You know they were fed up with goa if the small number of posters in this thread went gaga over a crappy Twisted Travellers track. The second disc veers off into psytrance territory and not particularly good territory at that. GMS followed by Nervasystem, followed by COP, (which was a good track by the way) and then SUN Project...it's like they were lining up to kick me in my tomatoes. That guitar in Sex, Drugs, and Acidtrance is excruciating. I agree that the mixing is crap, but you know when you're on number 8 in the series...the quality tends to dip a little. Check the Nightmare on Elm Street ahem, franchise. If you see this in the store don't get any of it on you. Mdk

Echoing Spectrum 07. Inherit Velocity 08. Zero Rotation 09. Overlapping Particles 10. Self Transforming Experience 11. Zone 12 12. Nea 3 13. Outlined Surfaces 14. Breathing Neutron Empire Magnus Birgersson's debut album is very electronic and at times noisy. It's partially mixed which allows good flow from track to track. It's much better when you listen to it all the way through which is easy because some of the tracks are very short, kinda like interludes within the greater story. The pads can be thick and warm while spacey effects and glitchy tones can make the overall album feel cold. Alien sounds intermingled with human voices gives a glimpse of what the mechanization of space might sound like on the horizon. Sometimes it can be dark and jumbled, but for me that just adds to the atmosphere. A soundtrack to floating in space reveals that the journey might not be as pristine as we thought. Pretty good. Mdk

Can You Dig It? 8. Shake 'Em 9. Revelation "The universe is talking to us right now...you just gotta listen." I'm listening. I heard this was good. But I wasn't expecting it to be this good. Psychedelic as hell with more crunch than dry cereal. It's what psytrance sounds like if Glowing Flame, Nano Records, and Blue Hour Sounds had a three way. All the tracks are so lush and layer heavy, pulling the listener in a thousand directions at once. Pumping at all times the leads are saturated with crackling energy and echo past the horizon. The disc reminds me of great compilations like God Save the Machine and Tales of Heads. Templars review was spot on with the lone criticism being it's lack of variety. Still, I'd rather have an album of great tracks that sounded the same than the alternative. Last CD from Nano? Sad indeed. At least they went out with a bang. Quality through and through. Highly recommended if you want to restore your faith in powerful psytrance dripping with psychedelia. Can...You...Dig It? Beatspace Goastore Juno Download Beatport Mdk

Artist: Tavi Title: Magnetic Field Label: Goa Records (Cd) Timewarp Records (Digital) Date: April, 2013 1. Magnetic Field 2. Step of the elephant 3. The spirit of the east 4. Space Sail 5. Wanderers of the desert 6. Reactive Acid 7. Airavata 8. Desert Wind 9. Neptune 10. Cosmo Elephant I tried. Ummm...I tried harder than that. Not that I'm faulting your effort, but perhaps you should go look in the bootyliscious section. Hold up, I'll come with you. I really tried. This album came out of nowhere and I'm like, "Tavi? Who the f*ck is Tavi?" Then I read a thread in the label announcements section and there was a comment about the mastering being horrible. Like Suncokreti bad? Or I've got really great listening equipment and I can graphically show you bad? Puzzling. So I was pleased when Renato asked if I would like to review this. Renato what the hell are you doing here? Apparently this album was first released on Goa Records and while still available is now being offered as a digital download from new goa label Timewarp Records. So now I get to give this a proper listening. First I would like to say the cover is misleading. This type of goa has more in common with Egypt than with space. We've heard cosmic goa trance before and this ain't it. The melodies float gently over each other and evoke images of desert sands. There are nice layers and it is constantly changing shape. Sometimes those leads scream and sometimes they bubble, but what I really liked was that he would go from the wispy highs to the deep lows. As far as the production goes the more I played it the more I noticed the lack of dynamism. It did sound flat in the sense that I felt the need to continually increase the volume to bring out the awesome richness contained within. Not ideal, but not a deal breaker for headphones. On a big outdoor setup though I'm not so sure. So I decided to do a test. If I compared the sound quality of a 320 kbps copy readily available on the net and the 16 bit wavs Renato gave me the wav files sounded fine. Normally I cannot tell the difference between the two even though I'm sure that debate shall rage on. I don't know enough about the formats to speak intelligently on the subject. I'll gladly listen to anyone to anyone who has more knowledge on this matter because the last thing I want to do is tell people to buy something that is truly deficient in quality. I just don't see that being the case here. Bottom line, if you buy the original or the digital release from Timewarp you should be fine. Imagine that, getting good quality and compensating the artist for his hard work. Back to my original statement, I tried to find a reason not to like this album. It's just not there. Tavi created a great, melodic goa trance album and I can't wait to get my physical copy. Highly recommended. Artist: Various Title: Supernova Remixes EP Label: Timewarp Records Date: August, 2013 1. Supernova (PharaOm Collapsing Star Remix) 2. Supernova (Nova Fractal Remix) 3. Supernova (Lunar Dawn Old School Remix) 4. Supernova (Remix) Can someone tell me the purpose of a remix? You, with the mismatched socks. "Can I go to the restroom?" Fine. The purpose of a remix is to take a familiar track and add a different perspective. Make changes while retaining what made it memorable in the first place. Some seem to believe it is to make carbon copies. I mean, why not...if it's a great track than one just like it should be great too, right? Wrong. That's just being lazy and mooching off the success of the original artist. I'm not suggesting you crack open the piggy bank and hire Nicki Minaj...unless you want to stare at her boobies. Which is silly because that's why Al Gore invented the internet. Nova Fractal (Renato Brnić) is heading up the Ovnimoon goa sublabel Timewarp Records and has made a nice splash in a short time. His 2 Cd compilation The Call of Goa was great as well as the release of his own material on Fractal Landscape. Lately it's been on the EP front. Supernova from Psychowave came out on his EP Sunshine Reborn 2 years ago. Good stuff surely. And so is this. He does a good job at keeping the number of remixes small at 4. Any more and you risk the Salieri effect of too many notes. The remixers have all done remarkable stuff on their own and with this track have kept the original feel intact while making it different enough to enjoy. The PharaOm remix seems brighter and the tribal-esque vocal chant is a nice touch with the 303 bark. Lunar Dawn takes an already great track and stretched it out to epic proportions. It's goa through and through it today's style. Some will love it and some will not. Could there have been more variety? Probably, but I'm pleased with it. The sound quality is rich and well done. Recommended. Juno Download Beatport Mdk

Artist: Various Title: Common Cold Remixes EP Label: Timewarp Records Date: July, 2013 1. Common Cold (Message To Earth Remix) 2. Common Cold (Screw Loose Remix) 3. Common Cold (Lunar Dawn Remix) 4. Common Cold (Dense Denso Remix) How is it we don't have a cure for the common cold? I'm really beginning to believe that a conspiracy is afoot. Male pattern baldness? No problem. Not so fresh feeling...down there...You bet. Grandpa needs more wee wee power? Of course. But somehow the common cold and its Jedi mind tricks have eluded and mystified the most advanced society in the history of civilization. McDonalds can get me to eat a McRib (whatever the hell that thing is), but I can't get rid of the sniffles. Unbelievable. New goa label Timewarp Records is right back at it with another digital EP release. The Common Cold Remixes are 4 tracks by a few projects giving their take on the Nova Fractal original from his first EP Main Sequence Star. As I've mentioned previously the purpose of a remix is to make something sound different from the original while still holding on to what made it recognizable. The original was heavily psytrance based so these remixes aren't a quantum leap from where they began. Where other releases were goa trance, all these tracks are more of the psy-gressive variety. Long unwinding melodies with great transitions into and out of the breaks. If you like long tracks and equate that with value then this is for you as you get almost 40 minutes of music. There is some good power to be found and what keeps these from being generic full-on remixes is the level of detail and lack of copy paste structure. Once again the number of remixes doesn't exhaust the listener and they all have their little...whatever that separates them. Pretty good. Juno Download Beatport Mdk

Artist: Amygdala Title: Modus Operandi Label: Ektoplazm Date: December, 2012 01 - Yeheuan Filters (73 BPM) 02 - Ridden By The Loa (66 BPM) 03 - The Construct (Oxylerator III) (136 BPM) 04 - Modus Operandi (140 BPM) 05 - Mindsweeper (142 BPM) 06 - Wintermute (140 BPM) 07 - Business End (134 BPM) 08 - Made Up Mind (130 BPM) 09 - MetaMusic (Reified Mix) (132 BPM) 10 - Simstim (65 BPM) 11 - Enlightenment Cut (60 BPM) 12 - ConunDrum (110 BPM) Wow, where did this come from? This is Andreas Riemer Christensen (is everyone from Denmark named Christensen?) with his debut full length album and it is a futuristic cyber world with incredible atmosphere. Booming drums, dark effects, and an all around eerie feel with crackling electric energy. The first two tracks are downtempo creepy pieces designed to thrust you into this bleak future. Part Matrix part Frontline Assembly. Once The Construct appears it's a scorching goa melody that fits right in with the metallic and cyber heavy world of his making. He's got a great skill of heightening the atmosphere when he goes into the breaks which keeps the listener firmly in his storytelling grasp. What he lacks in melodies he more than makes up for in lush effects and layering. And just when you think you have the track figured out he surprises you. My mind was made up on Made Up Mind as a somewhat groovy minimalistic progressive track when he unleashed the melodies that danced in step with the beat. While not "goa" by today's description it certainly contains goa elements that are fairly easy to pick out. I found that the middle of the album strayed a little from the theme originally presented (Business End was a little too happy & bright) this is still an album that is easy to enjoy. The beginning and ending to me are the most vivid and lush parts of the whole shabang and I would love to hear a low bpm release from him. One of the comments on Ektoplazm about this release hits the nail right on the head: "I can almost see the movie behind the soundtrack" Bingo. Sci-fi fans rejoice! Free at Ektoplazm Mdk
