Oh, boy...survey1 ain't gonna like this.... Ctrl+Alt+Del) 6 War of the synths / Alienn 7 Disoder rmx / Toxic 8 Super moskitos / Dapanji 9 Osaka Mafia (Cocorozasi) / Toxic Like most of you out there I have been fooled on occasion. One thing I have come to understand in my almost 40 years of existence is if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The first album I reviewed for 2011 was the uber disappointing Turn On, Tune In, Burn Out which had an outstanding tracklist. I see it and wonder how can you possibly f*ck this up? Well believe it or not they did. So what am I supposed to think when I see the first release from Joker Records? Who? Brand new label that manages to put together a compilation with the likes of Alienn, Orca, and Khophat just to name a few. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...go f*ck yourself. Demon Laboratory- Alienn's album Cosmic Disorder was one of my favorite twilight releases that was brimming with awesomeness. I don't know A-mush from a hole in the wall, no offense to the hole. They get together here for a blistering night time romp (sounds a little gay) with a scrambling bass line and synth insanity. Sure there are little buildups peppered throughout, but it's done rhythmically and fits together well. Very powerful and a danceable monster. Kill The Robot- Vasco Pedrosa from Portugal has made the rounds on plenty of compilations and artist albums with fairly good results. This track has bounce with acidic leads and a filthyness to it. The break allows things to build and then it just keeps hammering away. Not bad. Not bad at all. Demolition- Israeli Alon Lifer's debut Fist of Fury was an eye opener for sure back in 2008. Big beats, raging bass, and leads that fire from all angles. Very good track! Rojam- I will say this, they got more nations represented here than an old Benneton commercial. These guys are from Japan and their best tracks have been on the Yabai compilations. High energy stuff, man. This is a rumbler with an acid style lead snaking its way through the track. Not bad, but it didn't lead anywhere and just plodded along. No interesting break or change in melody...it just...went. They have done better than this. Fritando- D.N.I. is the head of Ultravision Records and released his debut Dancefloor Medication this year. It was a disappointment for me, but let's see what he comes up with here. Hmmm...more of the same it seems. There wasn't any energy or depth here. It felt empty like he was just going through the motions. Dude, this chick wants to get crazy, but you have to bring it. War of the Synths- Alienn is back with a solo effort that rules and I think is the best one here. Lasers, intense dance-ability, and acid all over the place. The short breaks are nice and add a level of atmosphere rather than just going all out. His transitions are great also and I didn't even mind his short buildups. Check out that hair...it is in full motion. Disorder Rmx- Alon Atias & Avi Aboresi seem like they have been in this game for a long time. They use a lead that is metallic in nature and isn't very pleasing to my ears. It drones on amid kick drum and hi-hat hits. The break reorganizes things for a bit, but here comes that lead again amidst a rather lengthy buildup. But wait! There's more...another couple of buildups to nothing. Where's the crescendo or climax? Skip this turd, and this isn't representative of what the duo are capable. Check out Android on the Moon from the High Technology Minds compilation. Super Maskitos- Have you ever heard the very beginning of a track and knew you weren't going to like it? Yeah, me too. This is one of those. Chopped up samples, buildups, annoying vocals...just the most cheesy and putrifying direction psytrance could take. Still not clear enough? It really is excruciating to listen to. Standard rule...if you have to say Domination or something like "turn this motherf*cker down" then your track sucks balls. Osaka Mafia (Cocorozasi)- And just when you think it couldn't get any worse Stops and starts, cornball samples, guitar rendition of a classical song. I mean what the f*ck happened? It comes off sounding like Inspector Gadget, really terrible. You know who likes this? The first half was pretty good, but for some insane reason they decided to finish the compilation with three of the worst tracks I have ever heard. When you listen to a CD and the final part of it is crap, that is what you are mainly going to remember. The standouts are Alienn and Orca tracks without question. The rest is ok and the final three are part of an incendiary sh*tshow that was my misfortune to hear. Buy it? F*ck no, not unless you like throwing money away. Psyshop Saikosounds Beatport Mdk

Flood Summer Feelings Aahhhhh, the Ukrainian label Space Baby Records responsible for Forest Trip by Kyoto, Magic Dew, Deep Into The Woods by Shiva3 and my favorite Goapocalipsis by Alienapia. What I know about the Ukraine you can fit on the head of a pin. I know it used to part of the Soviet Union, but after that....nada. This is what I know of the Ukraine: "In Soviet Union, sweater wears you!" Give him a break, it was the 80's a time before most of you guys were even born. He lives in Branson, MO now and is a professor. I use that last term loosely. Well, what else do the Ukraine have to offer... He's from the Ukraine? He's most people's picture of an American looking cowboy from City Slickers!!! Wow, Andy Warhol...that's even before my time really. Don't know much about him, only that he seemed weird and scary to me. Nonetheless, this is Dimitris Dritsas from Greece and even though I have never heard anything from him, I decided to give his music a try. The main reason was any label that could put out the amazing Goapocalipsis, surely won't deliver a turd in the mailbox. The cover seems plenty psychedelic enough so let's see where this goes. The first thing I notice is the length of the tracks. Obviously with 11 on deck you can't make everyone The Secret of the Thirteen Crystal Skulls. They are short (none over 6 and a half minutes or so) so you get a taste of what he wants to do. I think that is a smart move. This isn't your everyday chill album. For one, it wasn't relaxing per se, but more of a journey of discovery to see what sounds would come next. It is a mixture of genres with influences from all over the map. What really stands out is the drumming, and I do mean drumming as it is realistic as hell. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't touch a drum machine or software for that area. There are plenty of dreamy parts, but this seems to be music for an overcast day. It's mostly melancholy and allows you to be alone with your thoughts. Elemental carried me away completely and Slo Flow was moved along at a deliciously slow pace. You really get hypnotized by its lack of speed. Like this... Holy. F*ck. Totally forgot what I was going to say. Or... Ladies and gentlemen, I have my new avatar! Double Trouble had a taste of hip-hop in it (not in beat, but in sample) and Unfold the Secret had a tight funky space tribal feel to it. My favorite would be According to 2012 as the lost Mayan city really took hold with a slow and steady tribal vibe. I wouldn't call it a great album as there were a few too many tracks that just kinda petered out without being memorable. I would classify this as good, but you will do better with Carbon Based Life Forms and Aes Dana for really detailed and lush atmosphere. Psyshop Mdk

By Human - Ectima Holy crap, prepare to be buried.... in an avalanche of AWESOME!!!! Looking at that tracklist I cannot help but have insanely high expectations for this compilation. Having just reviewed the excellent debut by Vertex called Ocean, I knew that I had to have this. This label has been quite impressive lately functioning as a one stop shop when it comes to production, mastering and artwork. Pretty slick. Soul Search- This is Vladimir Mihajlovic and he has released a bunch of EPs as well as his album Liquid on Iono Music in 2010. He apparently likes to take inspiration from a lot of genres in creating his music. Well, good for him. He drops a housey beat with a wicked groove that speaks of sunshine. I didn't need it, but he gave me a sleek break before the 2 minute mark. Swirling pads govern as the rhythm bounces underneath. The main break at 5 minutes has a distant piano melody that does have a searching quality. There's plenty of twinkly sounds tumbling from the sky and this track just makes you feel good. Loved it. Pillow- The comic book villain with the stupid question mark is back with another house groove straight for the shores of Ibiza. Voice on reverb, groovy bass line and trancey lead all make this one comfy pillow. It's short but bouncey and God help me I really like it. It's catchy like a song on the radio that you want to hate, but simply can't do it. Tutti Frutty- 3 of my favorite projects on one track? Surely this has to suck. But no, the boys pull through with another feel good vibe. Simply nod your head music with a nice evolving break. It's surfing on a sunbeam and is just the perfect fit...like this. Lost Horizon- I'm still all giddy over the tracklist like a dork at a Star Trek convention. Wow, that was disturbingly easy to find. The Dragon has produced too many awesome tracks to mention, so I'm on pins and needles to see what he does here. He brings an almost psy-gressive feel with powerful leads and rumbly bass. The chopped up pad is cool but once again he rules the break. Wielding atmosphere like its a spiked club he drives it right to your forehead. Even though it is really short, I loved it. Take what I say with a grain of salt as if you have read any of my reviews for this artist you know what a tremendous fanboy I am. Ghost- Nikola Kozic is an artist on the rise as far as I'm concerned. This track is deep and detailed and I had to wade through it multiple times to get it all. The delicate synths play off the bass sounds in a nice balance as the bass line churns underneath. The break is nice and airy with lush tones and washes. Another great track. Data Link- These guys are really the masters of progressive trance and pairing them up is magic in a bottle. You've got groove, driving bass, and just a swagger that these guys own in spades. The gurgling sounds hit the spot but the break rules. Wide open and atmospheric to the core. My belly is full! Web of Life- I've heard about 6 tracks from this duo and they were part of that avalanche of awesome. This track has a long setup with nice effects adding depth. The break is very spacious with a loooong bass sweep that I love. A little on the darker side, but still nicely melodic. The final quarter had a cool key change but it wasn't as passion filled as the other tracks. Still great though if you don't compare. I.P.U.- Can't take...much more....progressive...deliciousness. Driving beat with super eerie effects again tending towards the darker areas of progressive. It's seems to have a science fiction cyber world feel. There wasn't much evolution but when you have such a good template to start with you don't notice that 7 minutes just went by. Dalimilova Kronika- His EP Shumska Majka was simply stunning, so I suggest you check it out man. What the hell does that title mean? Is he talking bout the chronic? Whatever man, he's got a wicked pad melody with a funky breakbeat that is very different. There is lots of sounds to weed (see what I did there?) through, but it's really worth it. The best way I could describe this is a very full and lush sound drenched in reverb. Cinematic in scope with a really passionate break. Great track. Almost as awesome as this... By Human- Now I wasn't a fan of the tech-trance stylings of Ectima so go screw yourself and your hate mail. If you had a puzzle with ten pieces with already nine on the board and when you went to get the final piece, you found out it was a scorpion instead of a puzzle piece...that's how I would describe this track. It's ok and I really liked the break, but...one of these things is not the same. To me it was a droning tech track that totally undercut the lush feeling of the compilation. Good God what the hell is going on here.... Man this was just a great summertime ride. If you are in the market for dreamy, groovy melodic progressive trance than head on over to TesseracT Studios and check this disc out. Most of the tracks (fine I'll just say it, "except the last one") follow the same atmospheric feel and are very danceable to boot. Look out Iono...nah just kidding. You know I love you, man. Artist: Braincell Title: Intelligent Being Label: Free Spirit Records Date: November, 2010 1. Intelligent Being 2. Sounds Bubbles 3. Discovered by aliens 4. Electrochemical Communication 5. 8 hours of madness 6. Different time level 7. Solar Wizardry 8. Divine Plant 9. Wormhole 10. Sea Foam What is the picture of disappointment? Yeah that guy's got it. Jeez, take it down a notch, it's not like I ran over your dog and then backed up so I could do it multiple times. As far as you know. Now I'm not going to say that I am that broken up about this Cd, but let's back up. This is Ralph Knobloch from Switzerland with his 4th full length album. Talent? He's got loads of it. His music is darker edged, intelligent full-on with great sounds and effects creating a deep atmospheric trip. His previous 3 albums on Glowing Flame Records have been excellent so I had really high hopes for this latest release. This was put out by Free Spirit Records so maybe that had something to do with the...difference in his music. Intelligent Beings- That was a pretty slick breakbeat opening before it's all hands on deck with the full on bass line. This is a less melodic Braincell than I am used to. The leads that are there are more useful as sound effects, but the groove is still dialed in. I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little disappointed... Sound Bubbles- Didn't he just use this exact same bass line? Pretty sure he did. You lose points for that buddy. This is a little more melodic than the first track with a pretty cool sample, but so far doesn't touch his previous work. Even with the final break where there is an opportunity to do something great or unexpected, it sorta just fizzles out. Good, but below expectations. Discovered By Aliens- Now this is what I've been waiting for. Bout time. Plenty of effects, with a great atmosphere as deep sweeps drop in and sounds echo off imaginary boundaries combining with force. The synths are mysterious and move with great speed. This is a great track in the Glowing Flame tradition. More of this pretty please! Electrochemical Communication- I was also underwhelmed by this one. Kinda just straight forward without a lot of the twists and turns he usually delivers. I mean it's not terrible, you can hear the quality of his production, but there wasn't one thing about the track that was memorable. I mean I like echoing sounds and stuff, but after a while you gotta throw something else out there. It just leaves one feeling empty, like an entire nation across the pond felt when this happened... 8 Hours of Madness- This took forever to get to a point where I thought he had something. About 4 and a half minutes I would say. And even then it continued to be fairly linear. You guys didn't send me the wrong disc did you? Again not the worst I have ever heard, but just because you're great doesn't mean you don't have to try. Different Time Level- The deep, squirty effects that I love start us off and my interest is peaked. However, the sounds he has chosen don't "sound" nice. Too...amelodic. Is that a word. The effects are better and I would much rather hear those. Meh. Solar Wizardry- Sigh. Divine Plant- Hmmmm....what could he be talking about here? Oh, crumbly non-stemmy goodness.... This absolutely demands a strong track. And thankfully he delivers. Superb sounds like his previous efforts give a rich, textured, dirty feel to the track. It's balls to the wall with sh*tloads of groove and intensity. Definitely one of the best tracks on the disc. Wormhole- He has this ability to make a track sound melodic with a total absence of melody. Effects and groove rule for the most part as this grumbler fills out. Back off Poindexter this is my rodeo. I would label this as a good atmospheric track that has loads of rhythm. I enjoyed it. Seafoam- He closes with a downtempo track that comes with the obligatory ocean sounds. That's where the cliche ends though, as the beat is slow and steady with sweeping bass sounds. Real bob your head music. The break is short and sweet and as the beat goes on I realize this is the most melodic piece of the whole album. Makes me even madder knowing what he is obviously capable of. I don't want it to sound like this was a sh*tshow because it wasn't. It was a not bad album with groove aplenty. On it's own, it is pretty good. The problem is when you hold it up to his previous stuff, it is glaringly deficient. If I wanted groove only with nary a melody I would listen to anything from Wild Things Records. Some out there will undoubtedly like his non-melodic evolution (and be mad at me for taking a shot at Wild Things), but I ain't one of em. His talent still shines through but I felt most of these tracks were a little on the thin side. He has produced more involved and deeper tracks and I hope he gets back to it soon. Sao Paulo SINAPSE Holy sh*t there's a school for this? Where do I sign up? This was done is Cincinnati a few years ago. They should've taken the Bengals with them cause they still blow. I went to school to be an eye doctor, but this seems way more cool. I would love to go to work each day knowing I would be wrecking sh*t. This is the first release from Neuromind Records compiled by Killer Buds and Xtatic. I really enjoyed Interfiber Skunk and Synthetic Vision so they had me on board already. There are more than a few unknowns here so it should be interesting. D.N.A. Frequency- "When the skirmish occurred...a certain group of entities fought in space.. and won the territory of Earth. These new owners did not want the native Earth species, the humans, to be informed of what took place. Uninformed, he species would be easier to control." With an alien backdrop like that the space feel is thick. Rich effects, lasers, and lots of melody is the name of the game here. The bass line races as layers of sound deliver a great atmosphere. When the break arrives it brings a similar sample and the feeling of dread is inescapable. I didn't care for the rising string but that is a minor quibble. Listening to this there is a lot going on. Another break has another similar sample setting things up for the climax. Great way to start. Wonderland- "It is a place...like no place on Earth. Some say to survive it...you need to be mad as a hatter. Which luckily...I am." Well, I don't want to be late for tea! This one is even better. Consisting of one of the members of Killer Buds, they bring a night time treat. The bass is juicy and fast, and the track has cyber computer effects to give some atmosphere. The synth stabs work well, and the lead rains down the acid. The break has some cool Alice in Wonderland samples, but doesn't hit you over the head with them. When the end comes around, there are lots of sounds to keep you busy. Nice! Mind Grenade- The Buds deliver a nicely evolving track, that ebbs and flows. It's very groovy with its fair share of acid leads that ricochet like a bullet. After a break it changes tempo which kinda killed the flow. Gonna have to work hard to get that momentum back. Somehow they do it, with rhythmic synth work building it stronger than it was before! Great track! Terrorist Attack- I don't really know who this is, but it is more on the commercial side of things. That's not to say it's bad, just...different. It's got a galloping bass line and repeated samples which put me off as well as high pitched samples. The music itself is pretty good, but put all the ingredients together and well...meh. If you're going to name yourself after one of the most deadly snakes on the planet you should have a track that can bring it. This one, ummmm...does not. Demolition School- This one starts off with more computer ambience and a pretty driving bass line. Sound familiar? The sample is interesting, about a little girl that calls a demolition company and wanting them to knock her school down. With the teachers in it. We have all been there, haven't we? I know when math started inviting the alphabet to the party demolition was something I could've gotten behind. Oh, the music is fine, but it's totally swallowed up by the sample. Mutants- Sidhartha and Khopat drop a f*cking bomb with this track. The lead is a dirty, squelchy sound that is out of control. Add a heavy beat to it and it's groovy to the 5th power. That's in real time by the way. It's not the most detailed work you have ever heard, but it goes all out. Awesome work gentlemen. Psychedelic Entity V2- I've run into several of his tracks as of late in my reviewing and I always come away with the same feeling. Stops and starts, buildups, and stops and starts during a buildup. All this tells me is that even on the 2nd try he couldn't get it right. Homie, just run the f*cking label. I've been waiting to use this fail gif, so, there you go...you've earned it. I love how his slippers fly off. What a tool. Dad's just trying to do his taxes and now he's wondering how he could have given birth to such a dumbass. Energy System- You spelled it wrong. See...right there, it's actually psycho. No problem, just left off the P. I haven't the foggiest idea of who this is, but the bass is really And don't think I didn't notice you trying to slide the BEP's sample in there. You're on the list...if I ever find out who you are. Black Pack- Satya, man whoever. Package? Like this? Ha, Germans love this guy. I didn't think it was possible, but this track was more boring and unremarkable than the last one. It's like you guys aren't even trying. Sao Paulo- And closing out the compilation is another unknown with a misspelled moniker. Maybe Synapse was taken. This one is the darkest yet, with bubbling effects and a mid tempo groove. Think of it like a progressive twilight song. The break is soft and contributes greatly to the atmosphere, almost giving it a forest feel. Hands down the best of the unknowns. Again, nothing groundbreaking but a very slick way to end the compilation. Congratulations on a pretty smooth track Sinapse with an "I" Can anyone end a psytrance compilation as strongly as it begins? I know you want to grab peoples attention. I know that making money in this genre is hard and this economy isn't helping. Knowing listeners probably listen to the first few track samples and get hooked you put all the crap at the end. I'm starting to think you do it on purpose. I really enjoyed the first 5 or 6 tracks, but then it seemed like you didn't give a f*ck what came after that. I don't want to be a d*ck, but money is tight these days. After shipping, 15 or so bucks is a nice bit of change. Matacanha (Absolum Edit) - Menog Part 02 1. Kamidogu (Lost & Found Remix) - sHiFt 2. Organic Laugh - Synergy 3. Complex Theoreme - Ex-Gen & Smashed 9 bucks. What can you get for 9 bucks? Well, I can go to the movies here...by myself. And I better eat before I go because with a 400% markup of refreshments I won't be able to afford a f*cking Kit-Kat. If I can dig another buck of spare change out of the couch (Ewww...how long has that been there?) and get a pizza. And you're going to put it back in the box and...f*ck it, I'm hungry. It's been a while, but I think that is slightly more than 9 dollars worth of weed... For less than 9 bucks you can have these 2 EPs. I found them on Beatport and since they are from 3D Vision I know they are quality. I didn't even listen to the samples...didn't have to. There are 3 tracks on each one and they were put together by Absolum, otherwise known as Christoph Drouillet, the co-founder of Transwave. If you don't know who that is then what the hell are you doing here? Wait...he used to be a lawer? And now he produces psytrance? He must a made a boatload of cash before taking that plunge. Part 01 Invisible Invaders- "Your scientists...think that the Moon is a dead planet. That it is uninhabitable. It is not. But now you are approaching the space age. We have controlled the Moon since then and have made it an impregnable base for our space ships. My people will come to your planet..and inhabit the bodies of other dead Earthmen. We have never been defeated." This is a boatload of Spaniards and...hold up I just gotta post this... "My name is Inigo Montoya...you killed my father. Prepare to die." He's Spanish, right? Anyway, it's those guys and whoever the hell Smashed is with an absolute ripper of a track. Twilight all the way with screaming synths and a must dance attitude. It's super powerful with some cool samples in the breaks and typical 3D insane leads. Awesome start! Power Consumption- "The only thing that can defeat power, is more power. That is the one constant in the universe. However, there is no point in power if it consumes itself." Portuguese brothers level their laser cannons at you with a damaging assault. The break allows the above sample to unfurl and boy does it with some pretty searing leads. It's a scraping acid wash ride by the seat of your pants. Get out your dancing shoes. Matacanha (Absolum Edit)- The lawyer steps in remixing a track from Menog's album Musically Speaking. I don't know what it is but the bass line in his tracks just seems to have more punch. Acid arrives in a deluge right to the break which fosters a new lead with a computer voice. Groovy, oh yeah. The pads fill this thing out in the 2nd break and that's when it really takes off. The lead melody snakes this way and that, taking a filtered beating. Just the way I like it. Thumbs up! Part 02 Kamidogu (Lost & Found Remix)- Wow, the balls on this guy remixing one of the best twilight stompers ever! Is the original really 6 years old? You f*ckers are old. Kudos to him though, because he f*cking killed it. Super intense yet still very detailed storytelling. It's hard to say whether this was better than the original. Think of it like this...if a shotgun can put a hole in you, well, what do you think two barrels will do? Organic Laugh- This is the only thread that is keeping me from writing CPU off entirely. Sure his music has blown massive chunks lately, but when he teams up with Cristoph it is magic. Banging hyper-trance with that dark edge is how I would describe this. It's a bit of a grower as it takes until 4 minutes for the ominous melody to arrive, but arrive it does with fury and hate. The break gives a breather, but it is short and before you know it you are at Defcon 4. Driving and pretty straight forward. Good stuff. Complex Theoreme- "It represents the most intriguing human carrier ever discovered to date. It's like it's evolving at a rapid pace. It's becoming...something else." This is the same bunch that brought you the Invisible Invaders from Part 01 of this series. And they deliver with a thumping beat...and I mean thumping...I thought my subs weren't going to be able to handle it. It was like this... with a little bit of this.... followed by a whole lot of this.... It took me at least another 45 minutes to continue this review. The acid lead is chaotic at its finest with a nice break to heighten the tension. There is plenty of spooky hi-tech effects to drench you in atmosphere, but mostly it's about heavy beats with a glorious groove. Enjoy this one. So for less than nine bucks you can rock out with your c*ck out. These tunes are the finest high energy twilight music you can get. Absolum did a great job putting these gems together and if I had to pick one, the 2nd one seemed more intense to me. Whichever you choose, you shan't be disappointed. Rek O Mended. The Riddler) 9 More 10 Far View This is a project of Zyce and one half of the Flegma team. He left? Are you f*cking kidding me? When the hell did this happen? Oh well, hopefully he makes his mark with this project. Tesserac T Studio has been making its mark lately with fine EP releases from Zyce and Float as well as the compilations Subfuse and Future Nature. Besides that they have their own mastering studio and do most of their own artwork. So they've got that going for them. Do you like this? It's cold as balls here and I could really go for some of this. Throw in some beautiful bikini action... Oh, you dick. Meh, I don't even know if I can put hot chicks in bikinis on this site anymore. Didn't we have a problem with that? Regardless, this could be just what I need; surf, sand and a couple of cold ones... Where the hell did my beer go? Imba! Imba! Your damn kids got into the cooler again! Ocean- Holy crap that is the warmest kick I have ever heard. It's like I'm kicking a down pillow. This is uber dreamy progressive house with the floating strings and electric piano. The break flows smoothly as ethereal chimes ring and the waves crash onto the shore. Not overly complicated, but a superbly nice groovy opening. Endless- This one is a nice slow progressive jam. The ocean theme continues with echoing effects and reverberating synths. It's a melodic tour de force that soars skyward. Sounds cliche or cornball, but it really is beautiful sounding. The whole track is soaked in reverb with a thumping beat. More synths cascade like a waterfall and it has a rich analog feel. Awesome. Lighthouse- This time Pion lends a hand and I wanna tell ya I think this track could've used a few more hands. It's rather boring with none of the emotion or feeling that the other two had. It bounces along without much variation. If there is the definition of filler, this would be it. Revive- And that's what the ocean does for a lot of folks doesn't it? Revives them. The team seems to do better when they make tracks on their own without any guests, but I guess they owed some people favors or some sh*t. This one has a sunlight feel with leads twinkling above a wobbling bass. It kicks into groove mode when the congos or whatever the hell that percussive instrument is. Sweet. The break is as vast as the ocean (there I did it) and it echoes. Man does it echo. Mellow stuff here, just right to take you away. Makes me want to get down, like these fine ladies... Poseidon- Really driving the ocean theme home with this title and the dolphin sounds. I get it, you don't have to beat me over the head. This is just smooth...constant bass line with twinkling synths the show some motion. They fit seamlessly together gathering the sun's rays for a perfect afternoon. Seriously, I need to clean the sand off my feet. Great track. Protector- Float is featured on this track and while I haven't heard much from him, it seems to work. The groove is tight with Iono style washes and slight keyboard touches that add to the track's depth. Wow, that was an unintended pun. The guitar lick was nice adding to the rhythmic flow. Good stuff. Silencio- Hey I hear more water! This is another example of bouncy summertime vibes. Silky lead sounds that are very melodic and that includes an awesome breakbeat in the, umm...break. If you like a vacation at the beach then this will go down just fine. Atlantida- This guy's making music now? Give a guy the trial version of Pro Tools and all of a sudden they're Moby... He may have a shot though. This is well put together as each piece of the groove puzzle gets added in succession. The key change keeps it interesting even though the first 4 minutes is purely straight forward progressive. It's groovy though so I didn't really mind that nothing happened in those 4 minutes. So I guess the moral here is that while nowhere near groundbreaking it was still a good time. More- Yeah, I could take more of this. But then I could take more of a lot of stuff. With a slower house-like tempo the beat kicks. Funky all the way around and that is it's real purpose. You're not going to get deeply detailed storytelling here, but that's ok. The break shines like the afternoon sun as the synths continue to churn. Sometimes some sugary sweet groove is all you need. Far View- As all sunny afternoons do, this one winds down with a view of the sunset. Deep bass lounges below shimmering synths as a tropical groove slowly emerges. House vibes proliferate amongst the fading light as you reflect on the days events. Sit back and enjoy this view. This was a perfect treat during the winter. It is saturated with all the feelings of summer that seem so far away. The beats are laid back and the melodies are smooth as a cold beer on a hot day. This is essentially chill out music set to progressive rhythms. The final track especially drives that point home. Higher Circuit Experience 8. Full Sail 9. Dub Gardens Entheo...to be within energy. Mythic...well, to be the stuff of myth. Looking at the cover with it's glowing white flowers, elaborate blue headdress, and planet in the background the first thing I thought of was this: As most of you know, this is Tyler Smith and along with his Distant System project has produced some top quality downtempo and ambient. Really emotive. I mean, damn his first album was called Emotivision. Now if I am being honest, unlike most of you I wasn't blown away by his 2nd album Efflorescence. Ease up Coco, I just didn't think it was as great as everyone else did. Celestial Dragon Records out of Hing Kong has has some very strong releases such as Spiral Empire, Vampire Sunrise, Intermittent Memories and Vital Signs most recently. So you know this label can bring it. Or, well, not bring it as it is supposed to be relaxing. Yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about. Umm, minus the offensive slur to women. Endless Wonder- I love flutes that evoke a spiritual feeling. You get that here with it's wavering and fluttering as tribal percussion guides you on the journey. The dubby bass is deep as synths parade above in a shimmering show. Chants, soft sounds, and just an otherworldly groove. Great track to open. Mysterious Union- Ooohhh, a didgeridoo! Bring in the shaman with his wisdom and the aboriginal feel is unmistakable. As a tribal breakbeat unfolds more chants flow with the beat. Delicate sounds dance slowly above that ever present bass. Really vivid presentation as I got caught up, especially with the arrival of the supremely melancholic...what is that, a violin? Superb! Desert Nomad- As if there wasn't an already ethnic vibe here, this track is named Desert Nomad. Booming drums set the stage for a trek through the vast unyielding sandscape that promises mystery. Ethereal pads float like wispy clouds as the electronics engage in a tribal dance. The dubby beat bounces as our solitary man travels through strange communities each with their own unique style. As Abasio intimated in his review, you can hear the Shpongle like sounds, but I didn't feel they were overdone here. A very descriptive and mysterious track. I felt like I was traveling across Egypt. Loved it. Ganja Baba- "You should try smoking more pot. It's not a drug, it's a flower. It has healing properties." Oh yeah, I'm in. Well, I would've been in over a decade ago. The slow methodical beat with the vocal is funky and hypnotic as hell. More Shponglese spoken here and I would've preferred a different sound. The Arabic feel of this track is overwhelming, very afternoon in the desert amidst comfortable temperatures as the wind blows. Someone took too big of a hit though because he is coughing. I really enjoyed the combination of real world instruments and electronics. Great stuff! Really makes you wonder why California is bankrupt... Night Sorceress- I'm a sucker for that flute of sadness as it's got so much emotion behind it. This track is quicker in tempo and loaded with chopped up vocals again in the true Shpongle tradition. Too much for me. I didn't get the same connection as I did with the other tracks. There is already a guy that makes Shponglese tracks. His name is Shpongle and he has already put out a few albums. A little copying is flattery, more than that is plagiarism. Synchromystic- "If you look too hard you can go mad, but if you continue to look you become liberated." This is slower with a meandering modulated synth that doesn't really have any direction. The 2nd half of the track impressed me with the violin solo in the Rena Jones mold. But on the whole, this wasn't my cup of tea. If I said it sounded way too digital and cold compared to the other tracks would you understand? Higher Circuit Experience- This sounds very post apocalyptic with the vocal computer sample as an eerie pad rises. The breakbeat dub sound is alive and well with squelchy sounds and a digitally modulated flute. Very mystical sounding with a nod toward the future as a squirty synth twists this way and that. The break in the middle is funky as the bass drops and returns. Clever. I think he does a good job here balancing the electric sound with the sounds that convey a spirituality. Full Sail- Full Sail...and there's the sound of a boat creaking. Get it? I will say one thing, he has his finger on the pulse of some funky grooves. Tablas thumping against a breakbeat is always cool however I don't see how this fits with the overall theme of the album. I mean what the f*ck, I feel like I'm in medieval Ireland with that flute. Total switch, how did this track get in here? Not everything is as it seems... Dub Gardens- This is a downtempo track with big dubby bass. Tribal drums and chanting are the order of the day with a vocal that I cannot understand. Think of it like...after a long day of drinking and dancing with friends, you are invited to the shoreline where there is a ginormous bong waiting just for you. It is very mellow with hallucinatory organ sounds and the presence of nature all around. Not bad at all. This could've been a revolutionary album, but unfortunately it didn't maintain its initial momentum. As Abasio mentioned, too many Shpongle touches, and I thought it veered off course. If I mention another artist's name this many times, you have to wonder. Unlike Abasio I preferred the first half to the unfocused 2nd half. It seemed as if he was going for a mystical futuristic theme and then the wheels fell off. He has a great talent for breakbeat and dubby vibes and he is awesome when it comes to the passion that the ethnic sounds can deliver. Artist: Various Title: Beach Atmosphere Label: Iono Music Date: October, 2010 1 Key In / Osher 2 Deep Passion / Naes 3 Everything Can Change / Xshade 4 Instant Summer / Klopfgeister 5 Puppetmaster / Motion Drive and Flowjob 6 Nostalgia / Normalize 7 Floater / Ritmo and Rocky 8 Mojo / Juiced 9 End Of Line / Reverse When a new release from Iono hits my hands this is my reaction: This label is the best progressive trance label when it comes to atmospheric and melodic trance and they are an instabuy. They just seem to have a knack for putting together compilations that put you into the clouds. I suppose if my physics training is to be believed for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. This is how feel when another CPU album comes out: For those that think that is harsh, did you hear Eat This? Key In- This is Osher Swisser or one half of Ananda Shake. I heard the Shake's last album...and it, uh...well Progressive trance seems to be where he excels however, as this track is beautiful. A nice mid tempo joint with plenty of effects and reverberating melodies. The kick and bass are deliciously warm as the track bounces along with smooth synths and soothing melodies. Firmly planted in the Iono Music style it was an excellent way to open the compilation. Deep Passion- Never heard of this artist (shocker!) but more sweeps and synth echoes that allow the brain to drift. It's not that complicated, but it flows well. I can picture myself on the beach watching the sailboats float by as the afternoon wind blows. Dreamy stuff. Everything Can Change- Continuing with the introduction of new artists, Xshade provides what seems to be his second track. Bubbling sounds sneak in between long sweeps and a one note bass line. In a repeated formula for the album, it's atmosphere rich without a dominating melody. The break arrives and the dreaminess continues as the effects rain down. This track is great and it just creates a long floating ride with the ocean just over there. Instant Summer- "Hello from the children of Planet Earth." I still haven't heard his Sunflavoured album, but all the other tracks by him are quite impressive. Let me tell you this track rules. The sounds are soft like your girlfriend's behind post moisturizing. And if I know your girlfriend (and I think I do!) just as comforting. The synths weave effortlessly between each other and that break is nothing short of magical. This is the definition of floating, drifting trance. Well, done master! Puppetmaster- Man, this CD is f*cking awesome! Another team-up brings a slight housey feel to things. The effects are again top notch and I would almost label this ready for the shores of Ibiza what with the female vocal. At the same token it is also the most aggressive track here so,...psygressive? The sample about the puppetmaster is kinda cheesy, but everything else makes this a very groovy and enjoyable trip. Hands down the most visible melody on the compilation. The final bit is groovy and dreamy to the, um...10th power. Feel that...that's sunshine my friend. Nostalgia- Tasos Koinis is another of the up and coming progressive producers with a handful of released stuff. This is another smash steeped in mellow smoothness. The synths aren't harsh, but lush. The beat gallops at a steady pace and the break is a short respite. With a churning lead to guide the sun's rays feel warm indeed. Floater- Progressive Jesus teams up with Rocky for a very detailed romp along the shore. It's a biochemical system that makes you want to dance you know. Well, that and alcohol. And maybe some other pharmaceuticals. The synths are delicate touches that rise above the washes yet it still is a driving force. Pretty damn good! Mojo- This one has a faster bass line with more echoes that fade into the sunset. Nothing remarkable about it even though it still has the Iono style. One thing noticeable here is the lack of a main melody. There are a couple of smaller ones connected by great effects work. Still, the work that is done has me doing this End of Line- With the final track, Mario drops a gem, I tell ya! Such smooth flowing vibes with zero wasted space. The effects create such a rich atmosphere that I am enveloped in this. Mournful echoes ring above a steady bassline as the break cascades gently over you like a Caribbean wave. Awesome track. I like to think of myself as open minded. On my MP3 player is Billy Joel, Onyx, Mindsphere, and Coldplay. Though liberal leaning, I still sometimes watch FOX News to see what the other side is saying. Which unfortunately usually results in this emotion: My point is that it cannot be 100 miles an hour all the time. Sometimes you need to step back and just...glide. Progressive trance done well can put you in the clouds and the only limit is your imagination. Nobody does that better than Iono and that is the case here. Michele A / Tube vs. Skazi 10 Damage Control (Twisted Reaction rmx) / Tube vs. Koxbox I'm going to quote a few things from the promo. Let's start with the first sentence: "Finaly, the long awaited Tube Remixes." Notwithstanding the poor spelling, have we really been waiting for the Tube remixes? Really? "The next generation of Push Records and Electronic Music." Riiiiiiight............. Personality by Tube was one of my first introductions to psytrance. I really liked some of the tracks and thought it was a good effort. The same can be said for his most recent release Confessions. That being said, I'm pretty sure I wasn't sitting up at night hoping against hope that some label would have the foresight and the ambition to release some Tube remixes. Well, my imaginary prayers have been answered as this was dropped by Push Records just recently. Let's look at the tracklist, shall we? That's what you came up with? I thought the idea of a CD full of remixes was to make it better? (Read: less sh*tty) If you have been paying attention to Tube and where his music has been going (Chemical Crew) than you probably know what you are in for. Fear not sissies, I listened to it numerous times...so you don't have to. Personality (Tube rmx)- And the total do over of his debut album begins. While not too terribly fond of their title track to their album, this has a crunchier, more frenzied sound. The melody is clear enough so that it doesn't sound like a different track altogether, but it has more ideas to keep it fresh. Isn't that the idea of a remix? The buildup at the crescendo made all that hard work almost worthless, but they recovered well. Pretty good. Meet the monster (Noizepulse rmx)- "They could put an end to human civilization." Another remix of the Personality album this time done by whoever the f*ck Noizepulse is. Just kidding you f*cknuts, this is Shahar Shtrikman & Yonatan Ramon from the Holy Land. It's futuristic, and brings a darker twilight edge to the track. I like the ominous melodies and sound choice is pretty good. Acid is plentiful and the groove is quite tasty. Good job guys. Dinosour (Anomalia vs. Bond rmx)- I am always nervous when a good track is remixed because, well most of the time you can only f*ck it up. If it was me, I would only remix crappy stuff, but each to his own. Apparently Eli released an album in 2009 that totally eluded me called Signal Shock. Like guitar in your psy? Me neither. Nonetheless, there is a hint of metal here that is somewhat appealing. But if I wanted guitar in my psy I would dig up S.U.N. Project; I'm sure they're buried around here somewhere. Bottom line, the title is repeated ad nauseum and mostly the track annoys me. Pass. My November(Magneto Remix)- I think Magneto has an affinity for Azax and his terrible music as of late, as this is the 2nd track he has remixed from Regev. Maybe that's a good plan, follow him and clean up the mess he invariably is going to make. Just a sidenote, Azax can you stop sucking and get back to producing tunes like you used to? Thanks. Right off the bat this is an improvement as there is more flow and better sound selection. It's twilight to the bone, with acid stabs and echoing into breaks. It's all been done before, but it is still good. He's got some interesting short breaks that are not the everyday which helps, but don't overdo it buddy. The large break keeps with the futuristic theme and the end is not bad. A little too stop and starty so sort that out. Good stuff though. Groove Action(Tube Remix)- Yet another remix off Personality. Guess he thought it really needed an update. It has a cyber feel to it with lasers and repeated sounds. Dark melodies predominate, and then there are the stupid samples, "Ooh la la" and "Groovy". Oh and don't forget the disco call. C'mon, who are you trying to appeal to? Still, there are enough twists to make me forgive, and there are some guitars as well. It's not bad, especially the ending, and I feel he is close. Generator (Karmacrop RMX)- Sidhartha and Khopat took on...yep you guessed it another track from Personality. Here I have an issue with their choice of lead as it is just that generic metallic sounding stuff you've heard a million times before. The synth near the end is a better twisted sound as it snakes its way to the conclusion and that saves it from being just another number. Dangerous (Tube Vs. Crazy Tone RMX)- I listened to the original which was on Chemical Playground and it had all the things that I would normally despise. Strangely enough I liked it. Same thing here. It's put together well, so the annoying stuff isn't that annoying. Sure there are stops and starts, build ups and guitars, but it is a funky little tune. Not great, but not the sh*tfest I thought it was going to be. Confessions(X-Team Rmx)- There's an X-team now? Is that when a member of the A-team (cough, cough) cannot fulfill his duties they pull someone from the second string? Brass presets? Chopped up samples? Guitar? Oh yeah, it's in there. But by all that is holy, I find this a guilty pleasure. I should hate it, but I don't. Well, that is until the buildup. God, that is like f*cking up a wet dream. Rock 'N' Roll (Prospect Vs. Digital Tribe RMX)- I'm noticing that as the titles get longer, the music gets crappier. Just something I picked up on. Holy Sh*t the digital guitar makes an appearance! So someone did dig up S.U.N. Project! This is as generic as it gets with the exception of the 303 sounding lead at three minutes or so. It owns, but don't worry, they'll f*ck it up with the singing. This can all be summed up by this : Into The Future (Twisted Reaction RMX)- Well, we've reached the end of this journey and I would love to tell you that it finishes strong and ends on a high note. But I'm not a liar. Wow, that went downhill fast. You know there's trouble when you see a lot of heads in hands on the pics I post. I think Tube is a good music producer and he certainly isn't the first artist to be a victim of sh*tty remixes. I also believe that if he made his music darker and stayed away from the stops and starts he could really excel in the twilight genre. Anime...that is some whacked out Sh*t. Am I going to hell because I find it so funny when this type of crap happens to kids? And check out grandpa...he's like, "Well, Johnny you shouldn't have provoked him." Like this happens every week. If a kangaroo dropped kicked my kid, that marsupial would be on the dinner table. My favorite... I've spent over $200 in dry cleaning in three days. Regardless of how you mean it something is going down. And here, sound is going the downtempo route. From the psychos who brought you Kubensia this is their first chilled out effort. Now when I got the compilation, I looked at the tracklist and was like... You don't know how long I've been trying to work Gary in here. Anyway, I was like, who the f*ck are these people. I've heard of Lauge and Baba Gnohm because their EP Monolith was outfrikkenstanding. The rest...well, sometimes people can surprise you. Snowflake (Seamoon Remix)- Man this sounds like water dripping amidst the glaciers as a beast stirs deep beneath the ice. You can hear the ice cracking. So cold and alive with movement in the dark. You can hear it, but you cannot see what is out there. With a tribal yell the beat slowly churns as the effects deepen the feeling of isolation. Awesome! Odd- These guys produced the awesome Monolith EP and they continue their fine work here. Soft tones chime above floating pads in the grand Vangelis tradition. With a trip-hop beat a mournful guitar wails delicately by. An LSD sample sounds off, but it is neatly tucked into the background not becoming overwhelming. The whole track is decidedly cotton candy sweet but a delicious guilty pleasure. Distance Unknown (Erot remix)- I've heard 4 tracks from Erot and they've all been pretty good. This has wide, interweaving pads and a shimmering lead that catches the sunshine just right. The sounds balance out perfectly with neither the high nor the low dominating, but work in tandem. No unexpected twists, but a good solid tune. Chillnerd- Hey, it's Seamoon again. He produces a worldly effort with flutes, tribal percussion, frantic synths. It's quite busy, with electronics bouncing off the real world instruments. Makes you want to find your inner nerd...excuse me I need to fix something on my computer. Hey..hey, don't you take that picture! Before The Morning Sun (Irukanji Remix)- Truly spacey with a slow deliberate groove that keeps the head bobbin. The percussion jogs like a marathon runner as the pads float calmly by, taking it all in. This has sunshine written all over it. Even when the pace seems to increase, the beat remains the same. Very positive and I enjoyed it a lot. Long Way Home- Ummm....this thing is all over the place. One minute it's got happy unicorns sh*tting rainbows and then it switches midstream and becomes a deep, brooding sad sack. Near the end I thought I was bumping some Jan Hammer. I just got off the phone with my boy and he was like... Therapy Pudding- I love pudding. And this is chocolate with a caramel groove. Want some funk with that? Floating vocals with a breakbeat is quite tasty. The bass thumps as the break really stretches its legs with a very smooth interlude. Skittering synths and warbling leads sound really nice. This is sitting on the beach in the afternoon in Jamaica with a recreational...whatever in your hand. Really liked this one. Sleep Paralysis- With an interesting sample describing (wait for it...wait for it...) sleep paralysis, Sputer is back with a calming vibration. Plucked strings mingle with synths in a hypnotizing fashion. As a cascade of synths rain down, another sample fits well with the methodical clicking of the beat. Super relaxing. Convolution- This one was a little to hectic for my tastes with it's fast arpeggios and overall loudness. It wasn't relaxing and came across as just...deal with it. I think I need to revisit this... Within The Grapes of Soul- With an ambient closing, twinkling synths interplay with deep synth strings in true suspense movie fashion. It crawls along slowly and to be honest sounds a little thin. It's eerie with falling strings and the portamento type effect. Nothing spectacular but a nice way to close I suppose. Well, that was really all over the place. Some nice relaxing and emotional tunes and some that stressed me out. Lauge and Baba Gnohm are the stars here, but most everyone else had some good ideas. I felt the flow was off, but maybe that's just me. I don't believe it is essential, but I'm glad I have it as it is a good downtempo compilation. Recommended. Psyshop Beatspace Goastore Mdk

Artist: Various Title: The Garden of Delights Label: Blue Hour Sounds Date: July, 2010 1 Bolid / Paraphone 2 The Journey Agent / Tantrix 3 Orangutangy / Tristan 4 Timeless / Ajja and Pearce 5 Tiny Taste / Asimilon and Satya 6 Fabric of Space / Ianuaria 7 Brewed Awakening / Lucas and Tristan 8 Door Mice / Tantrix 9 Garsas (Gaiana Rmx) / Gido Blue Hour Sounds is based out of Italy and began in 2009 so they are relatively new to the game. The only experience I have had with their releases is the wonderful downtempo effort Made of Dawn. Bolid- This is Benjamin Klages who has been on a few compilations. It was a nice opening. Nothing to elaborate or detailed, but nice to hear. He has that bubbling style that makes the track appear thicker and more liquid. The lead is squirty and playful to be sure. One thing of note, the sounds were crystal clear. Not bad. Free Lemonade- "In future be more careful from who you accept free lemonade." This is a wonderfully organic track that is full of effects and pumping sounds. It bounces and weaves and reminds me of the stuff from Glowing Flame. Long phrases twist above a constant bass line as more sounds are added to the mix. Sounds great. Yeah, you tell 'em Orson. Orangutangy- Tristan Cooke is a survivor who has produced everything from Goa to progressive and downtempo to psytrance. Most of it pretty damn good. This track is a bit of a rambler in the psy-gressive mode. Effects compliment the good bump it has going. Again, not terribly elaborate, but these monkeys seem to enjoy it. Tiny Taste- "As your attorney I advise you to take a hit out of the little brown bottle in my shaving kit. You won't need much...just a tiny taste." Two unknowns for me who bring scraping sounds and rolling bass lines. More groove oriented without many layers, but the percussive work is pretty nice. When the effects start to pile on an ominous feel takes hold. Good stuff. Fabrik of Space- One of the reasons I was interested in this compilation is right here. All of the tracks I have heard by Josef have been super. Very squirty and forest like sounds ripple in larger and larger waves but the difference here is the depth and the layers he brings. The leads just roll on. Rich and vivid and without a doubt the best track on the compilation. Hey! Awkward white boy who can't choose a hair color...get out of my Mr. T dance shot! Brewed Awakening- Get it...Brewed Awakening? I'm guessing these two are big coffee drinkers. Wait...or beer drinkers. Check this guy out...his name is Popcorn and he lives in the mountains of North Carolina and he brews his own moonshine. He's like 90 years old and has been arrested numerous times. They tell him to stop, but he's mountain people. It's like telling a crack addict to just chew gum. Hell, they even put the drip drip in their track. Metallic clankings that streeeetch as the bass line pops underneath. A constant ringing of a synth brings a wobbling bass sound at the break. There is a lot going on here and it is delightfully filling. The 303 finally arrives (I knew it was coming!) and becomes quite groovy. Great stuff again! Jumping Mice- Tantrix again, with more psychedelic goodness. Oh, those juicy effects they just set the tone. This is an outerspace journey, with comets spiraling past you sparkling with so many colors. It has a goa feel to it and just pounds away. The break is so cold, but well done. Also one of my favorites. I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this duo. I just wanted to see if I could find something. Awwww....isn't he cute?!? Garsas (Gaiana remix)- To close it out is a project I have never heard of remixing a track by an artist who I have no idea who it is. Follow that? Settle in because it is a long one. It's a spacey rumbler with deep bass and swirling sounds. Echoes and reverberating effects work very well, as I look down and see there is still 6 minutes to go. Wow. Soft ice-like pads chime in and synths twinkle as a guitar softly hums just within earshot. Just flat out groovy and I didn't mind the length at all. This is a very good compilation. Not great, but quality. It really does remind me of a lighter version of Temple of One. You won't be overwhelmed with melody, but what you will find is plenty of psychedelic sounds and good groove. Case in point...the last track. It really didn't go anywhere, but the trip it took me on wasn't boring. I enjoyed it and was glad I found it. There are better compilations out there (and far worse) but you would do well to give it a listen. Very subliminally psychedelic. Recommended. Goastore Saikosounds Beatspace Psyshop Mdk

Build ups to me are like the easy way out. Instead of being creative and finding a way to bridge phrases insert stops and starts or a running snare and obligato string. I'm on board for an extended and descriptive break, but please you can see these build ups coming from a mile away. There's some good progressive out there my friend! Mdk
