Spiritualism and drugs in the psytrance scene
ollylovesgoa replied to djmaxfactor1995's topic in General Psytrance
Just want to put it out there that I am really not sure what, djmaxfactor, you are trying to say. You are mostly ranting about political ideals and your hatred of religion whilst arguing that this particular trance scene needs desperately to stop identifying itself with anything at all beyond the sound itself, particularly political ideals and religion. I think there's no smoke without fire, the huge amount of symbolism in Goa trance has become commercialised, but it comes from somewhere. I still go to parties and trance out, and although I don't take psychedelics anymore, I still believe it is a deeply spiritual experience to be in a party with a load of lovely people having a damn good time to some complex music. What is so wrong with that? -

Cheers, it feels like christmas waiting for them to arrive Psynews has motivated me to start buying CDs! And I got a new Hi-Fi so i'll actually be able to play them. My mate got this for me today: I always come back to this when I lose hope in full-on, really quality stuff. And ordered this for £2.50! Buying music is very addictive! Especially quality cds like these

All of these for £35!! What a bargain (:

Eating (drinking?) soup while listening to Psykovsky, and simultaeneously (again) avoiding revision for my exams. Most of you will have forgotten how grim exams are haha, they're a real pain in the tits.

What music are you listening to right now?

Psykovsky - Tanetsveta Oh my god, oh my god. . . -
This debate is really puzzling me, I always thought it was very easy to distinguish between psytrance and Goa. Firstly, the bassline, Goa kicks are oomph, Psy kicks are bang-chica-bang-chica. The kick in Goa is far more subdued than in psytrance and gives less of a structure. Secondly, Goa is older! The analogue synths! Goa was mainly made in the mid nineties, after that psytrance started to emerge with their metallic clanging sounds and monotony, it took a few years to get the melodies back in modern psytrance. (The exception is of course newschool Goa) Goa sounds organic and can have eastern melodies, psy takes more influence from mainstream trance, e.g Yahel. For me at least they are two distinct styles of trance and not one genre at all, what is Goa I call Goa, likewise for psy. There are of course different sub styles withing Goa and psy. So to the guy saying that Koxbox and Etnica are different, yes! (They are both absolutely excellent, especially Etnica! <3) but they are both definetly Goa Trance.

Uncommon elements of oldschool goa
ollylovesgoa replied to (OM)Open_Mind's topic in General Psytrance
I think newschool Goa definetly needs to start developing, not that it isn't great, much better than full-on, but old school Goa had a lot more going for it. Some things i've noticed: New school Goa sounds too polished, sort of over produced. I'm all for new synthesizers and effects but there seems to be a running theme of clinically perfect sounds that lack the warmth of old school. New school Goa doesn't have enough acid. New school Goa is too heavily layered, as if layers = psychedelic impact. As has been stated there aren't enough darker vibes in new school. Not necessarily dak per se, just not sunshiney bright, and if an artist is going ultra melodic some emotion wouldn't go amiss. Old school had so many twisted producers creating truly mental stuff. New school could draw on the inspiration of : Darshan, Sandman, Hux Flux a lot more. New school Goa sounds a lot more like nitzo than proper Goa. Maybe some themes? Tribal, Sci-Fi, Spiritual. New school all seems very bland theme wise. -
I voted dark, mainly because of forest psy which completely blows me away. Also I find the light side of trance today to be very commercial and basically rehashing the same ideas year after year with a higher production quality. Of course there are many exceptions to this, I actually like a lot of prog. It's a different story for Goa, I love both equally.

I really do dislike the satanic stuff, mainly because I think to myself while listening that the guy is degrading the genre with every sample Having said that, Psyfactor did a tune called 666, and it's a stonker, oh and I love Cassandra's Nightmare, obviously (:

What music are you listening to right now?
ollylovesgoa replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
Listening to Erta Ale, since there seems to be so much hype about it! Definetly need a few more listens but on first impression, this is ace! It's not as dark as people might have suggested, but it's not ultra sunshiney, not sure if it's literally groundbreaking or anything, a lot of Etnica influence for sure. -
Those melodies! Fantastic

I just want to put it out there that I think Darkpsy is fantastic and highly complex intelligent music. It takes some getting into, some actual listening, not hearing. A lot of your criticisms Visine do sound exactly like the way my Dad talks about electronic music as a whole, "it's random noise" etc, every genre of psytrance presumes that you will listen intently in order to achieve the desired translation from the artist. Darkpsy is the only sub-genre of psytrance that entrances me in a similar way to Goa, especially forest, it is wonderful music if you get into it. And I genuinely think it's false to say that darkpsy in general tries to be cheesily spooky. Every single genre in the world has poor acts, jumping on the bandwagon and trying to make cash out of people. I've heard some stupid evil stuff but in order to get into it you clearly listen to the high quality outputs, which are by far more prevalent in this sub-genre than any other imo. I simply fail to see how Kindzadza, Osom/Psykovsky, Cosmo, Kashyyyk etc are trying to do anything other than produce high quality, fast, psychedelic and entrancing music. It's anything but random.
