Alright. I'll keep it short: I'm looking for the most original basslines because I need some inspiration. So which tracks/artists make the most innovative use of basslines in your opinion?
-
They also did a remix of an Anne Clark track if I remember right... anyone knows the track and where I can find it?

The biggest danger to a scene are the people that want to prescribe what's "true" or "untrue". In fact, you can see the same arrogant attitude in the black metal scene for example. Even though I listen to this music, I never managed to get along with these, they think they are some kind of elite. But my experiences with stupid black metallers are another topic. Anyway, now where does the "respect" in PLUR stand for? Wasnt Goa all about tolerance? I've seen many people acting and looking completely different to each other, and they're all accepted and respected. Now who has the right to say "this is wrong and this right" or "this is the true spirit and everything else is a threat to the scene"? Meh, it makes no sense to write more, everything has been said before anyway. However I find these titles used very silly. Who thinks these very dumb B-Horror-Movie titles will scare anyone? They're damn stupid and I dont get why you should use such a title as "Hell Raver".. ooooh, spoooky. Come on, even little satan-kids will think this is cheezy (evil-cheezy actually). Name it "Schnitzelkraut" or whatever and let the music speak for itself. Anyway, as long as the music is good enough to make me go insane in the good way, these titles dont really hurt me

VA - The Door of Wisdom (http://www.saikosounds.com/english/display_release.asp?id=4250) ... I like this compilation a lot. Good (psychedelic!) stuff I could well imagine dancing to. Far away from the usual cheese. Then there is Shift (if this is full on at all) Audialize Absolum Neuromotor And of course Penta, but I doubt this is still full on.

Hey, thanks a lot for that suggestion. Yeah, I'll give it a try

V/A - Run Motherfucker, Run is surely a crappy named compilation, but it has some good Dark Psy on it. I love Track 6 by Vector Selector. Here's a review on the thing: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/...c/60327/forum/9

I suggest you better start off with Fruity Loops instead of Cubase. It's really easier to get into than Cubase. You can switch to Cubase anyway if you think Fruity Loops has become too weak, but I'm sure you'll stick to Fruity once you've fallen in love with it Synths: Well I recommend ReFX Vanguard - nearly a must for techno/trance and the likes. Comes with good presets and is great for creating metallic leads and stuff like that. If you listen to my tracks, almost all the synths are done with vanguard. well another good synth is rgc z3ta+, but this one is very difficult to use, but very powerful and with a high sound quality. Best choice for basslines is imho Audiorealism Bassline, especially for the typical Psy basslines. If you want to create good FXes, try Linplug Albino. Great atmospheric layers can be done with Spectrasonics Atmosphere.

Uhm.. I usually like the speedy stuff (around 150 BPM) Sometimes I'm in the mood for proggy things at around 130 BPM

I don't know... don't get me wrong, every single song on this album is just great and I'm still enjoying it a lot... but am I the only one who thinks there could be more diversity amongst the tracks? All of the tracks have a dark spooky horror pad melody and this chainsaw-lead, which certainly have become Psyfactor's trademark, but they give every track almost the same groove. Exception is maybe the last track with some really nice melodies. Other than that, I can't find any weak points on here. Everything is on a constantly high level (though I still like the track "Walking Demon" most)... my only problem is the overall impression of a lack of diversity. Right now I'd give it 8/10

Ah, I'll have an eye on it, thanks. Fungus Funk!! How could I forget? There is a promo album called "Cyberfungus" from 2003.. but.. that doesn't count I suppose. Artifakt with a Psy Breaks album, that would be zOMG²³

X: Xenomorph & X-Dream

my first album of course and then... Terminator (only one track so far, but I put high hopes in him) Cybered (Would be something to fill the gap between the Delta and PPS Project) Synthaik (unfortunately there is only one track yet) Osom (I am not sure my mind could stand 8/9 "Over Game"s but it would be almost perfect) Etack (Nice Dark Stuff, would enjoy it) Karavena (cool stuff, album is very unlikely though) Azax Syndrom (an album would be a nice full-onish DarkPsy assault)

Hehehe, that's a very nice idea.. but I'd almost call it impossible to make a good tune with *only* a few samples. So I think we should leave the contest quite open to anything. If the jury likes it, it's fine, if not, you probably failed. So it's just like the real music-biz

Most intense Killer Kick Drum Ever thread
Cybernetika replied to Frontier Psychiatrist's topic in General Psytrance
A heart beat is a very good description, yeah ... I think if a tune evokes associations such as these its a sign of quality -
Of course I was referring to the nowadays commonly used term "Psy Trance" that originated from Goa Trance. Anyway, it's very interesting to see that most would label Hallucinogen as the link between these two. But thanks a lot for the very informative and enlightening replys, especially to seraph and Trolsk

Where does Goa end and Psy start.. what do you think? What's the most essential difference between Goa and Psytrance to you? This is leading to my central question for you: I was wondering if there is any album, track or artist that could stand for a transition between Goa and Psy. What's the best example for a link between these genres?

I do not want plain hands-in-the-air-stomp-your-feet-whatsoever dancefloor stuff. I want something deeper which takes me on a journey, something that can evoke some images in mind. I think trippy is even better for dancing than the "dancefloor killars" ... you can become one with the music, thats what only trippy Goa can do for me.

This is by far the most original and weird shit I've heard in a very long time. It's very very strange but somehow I started to love the tracks. w00t, Just listened to Aldus B - Hideous Strength. I think even stuff like Hujaboy cant match the darkness of this. The other tracks are good too but a little too weird for my taste, but this one owns me. Can it get any darker? I think the japanese got something really hot here. This has the originality the 'western' scene is lacking more and more. We will see how it evolves.

Cool, thanks! I've always been in need of good Sweep FX

how i make (dance) bass?
Cybernetika replied to d_vision's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Oh, and I forgot, its all about kick and bass working together. Note length and velocity are very important in order to make a bassline perfectly filling the "gaps" between the kick. It's quite a science and I dont really know how to do it so far. i usually do it by ear, what sounds good to me is what I use. -

Here, I made a little example of my "full-on bass". If you got Audiorealism Bassline, have a a look at it. I know its not perfect, but should give you the basic idea: "Full On Bass" Fruity Loops zipped Project File -
Most intense Killer Kick Drum Ever thread
Cybernetika replied to Frontier Psychiatrist's topic in General Psytrance
Well I have not often heard a harder kick drum than in Kindzadza - Mars Bless U. I'm not a huge fan of too hard kicks but this one fits quite well. And then there is Terminator - KFSBK on submarine. It's a hard psy kick but pretty deep and well balanced. I'd call it the perfect kick. -

You should try to raise every center bass note one octave. For example: KbBb KbBb KbBb KbBb - where "b" stands for the deep note, and "B" for the note one octave higher. By doing this you will get a more melodic bassline, but you also get the deep notes needed for the low frequencies. If you want more melody, you can then add some notes in the octave of the higher note instead of the deep ones. Ah, I just found something I wrote a while back, maybe it helps you: ""Some Settings for Audiorealism Bassline: Cutoff --> depends on the tune. If youre going for some ultra deep dark psy, or just want to have something providing only the lowest frequencies, you should drag it down to ultra low. If you are going for "brighter" stuff, try values from 30% to 50% ... in general everything above 50% is in my opinion too high and will most likely interfere with the rest of your tune. 37% turned out to be the best value for me. Tuning --> Set it to lowest, you can do the detuning in the sequencer anyway. Envmod --> Again depends on the tune, but if you think your bass is too dull, play with this value, a higher Envmod will usually make your bass sound more accentuated. If you’re not working with audiorealism bassline: this one basically controls the attack and decay of the note. In another synth, you can achieve this effect by turning down the attack and decay values of the envelope. Decay --> goes closely together with envmod. A long decay setting will be useful for longer bass notes sliding into each other, whereas a typical full-on bassline should have a very low decay. Attack --> IMO a bad setting, you should rather leave this alone, at least for basslines. Same with distortion. Ok, some settings I suggest for a full-on bassline: Cutoff: ~35%, Detuning: 0% (lowest), Envmod: 50%, Decay: 0% Well, these are usually my settings when I want to make Psy basslines. As said, it depends whether you are aiming for a darker bass sound or not, but usually I found Octave 3 to work quite well. The note progression and length is also quite important in Psy. You have to look upon your bassline in two parts: basic notes, usually a tonic note, that is repeated very often, and “melodic” notes, that are not necessary but will eventually provide some kind of melody, often seen in Full-On. In Dark Psy, the bass is usually extremely deep with an extremely low cutoff and it often consists of simply the basic note repeated every 1/16th. Eventually there are some semitone steps here and there, but you get the basic idea. Now, whereas the basic notes are usually very short (I recommend 1/32 note lengths), there can be some notes held for a bit longer, usually at the off-beat, meaning at the 3th note each bar. Now the brighter full-on bass consists of more “melodic” notes, like I mentioned. Here your ears are important again where to put the melodic notes, just listening to your favourite tunes and analyzing the bass note progression will help you a lot. If you want a richer bass, try spanning 2 octaves with your bassline, for example C3-C4-C3 , the deep ones will provide the subfrequencies, whereas the high will contribute the higher tone carrying frequencies, I will get more into detail about the frequencies later on. There are many other ways to create a good bassline, one of them being a simple offbeat-bass, good for stomping tunes. Or let your bass “roll” by increasing the decay, whatever sounds good is allowed. "" Now when trying a bit I got this note progression just as example: I know its a bit darker but should in general be what you want. G2-G3-G2---G2-G3-G2---G2-G3-G2---G2-G3-G#3 G2-G3-G2---G2-G3-G2---G2-G3-G2---G2-G3-E3 The "G2" notes have a lenght of 1/32, the rest of 1/16 Envmod is set to 70%, decay to 37%
