What's your point? He released on Suntrip after 2000, so he must be in the newschool movement?
-
Sorry, I disagree Ra has releases dating back from 1997 and 1998. Have a look here: http://www.discogs.com/Ra-ROM-Azure-Child/master/13085 He was also a member of D5 and Electron Wave. Besides, the original version of his first album was released in 2000, see here: http://www.discogs.com/Ra-To-Sirius/master/13090 The one you're talking about is re-release that was published later.

Dimension 5 & Ra New School Goa artists ?? I don't think so. I'm guessing they are on that list because they released on Suntrip, but they've been around, releasing for quite some time, way before Suntrip existed. I'd say D5 is definitelly part of the "old school". Even that album on Suntrip is a re-release from 1997. I don't think Ka-sol is a new school Goa project either. I wouldn't classify his sound as Goa, but rather "Forest" scando Psy much like Battle Of The Future Buddhas. Besides, he's released his music since late 90's whereas "new school Goa" to me is the wave that gained momentum following the minimal trends wich were starting at the turn of the century. That means we're talking about 5-6 year gap between Ka-sol early work and say Filetria's first album that I would consider "new school". Again, I'm guessing he's put on the list because he released on Suntrip, but he released his music way before Suntrip's existence.

Is this what you had in mind then ......and once the sun sets, some beatless ambient for...ahem, you know what

You can find one for sale here: Shpongle Limited Edition LP Auction
-
Yeah this one is 180 gram black vinyl. I could have sworn they are even heavier because the LP feels very heavy when I hold it. The thing was sold out so quickly that they haven't even managed to take down the announcement page from the Twisted website yet. It's still on the front page of their website and also here: http://www.twistedmusic.com/news/news_shpongle_ineffable_-_limited_vinyl_edition/ There was another member here at Psynews that was saying he has it in that "what new music did you get" thread so maybe he'll sell it to you.

Yeah, good question I'd love to hear an answer to from the labels. I would guess higher shipping costs relative to the CD's were maybe a part of the reason. Once Flying distribution went bankrupt, it snowballed and lead to some labels closing their doors due to financial trouble. Those that survived due to Flying distribution trouble and many other reasons had to probably look for more cost-effective and "do it yourself" solutions during those days, so they stay afloat. That unfortunately meant no vinyl medium as it required separate investments into vinyl mastering, extra shiping/transport costs, separate pressing costs etc. However, what I'm seeing lately is that there seems to be a small, niche market for this type of a medium if it's done right. In other words, you are not likely to break even if you press 5000 LP's that are almost exactly the same as the CD, but if you do a small, special edition run incorporating some of the ideas we mentioned here in this thread, there's probably an opportunity to sell it.

Yes, very interesting observation I looked at the submitter's log on Discogs and here is what they discussed when they were editing the release about 1 year ago: "draeke: it is clearly NOT limited to 350 as my copy is number 609 and i know a guy having number 360, how bout that ? inexpressible: this info came directly from Simon H of Twisted Records, and he should know it. don't ask me what weird system they used for numbering the sleeves though. " I think both Draeke and Inexpressible are members of this forum too, so maybe they can shed some more light on the subject.

You're right "customized" can mean many things. To me, ideally it would mean something extra that would be included in the whole release for example: - maybe extra 12" with previously unreleased tracks not found elsewhere like some rock bands are doing, - extra cool artwork (or package) like Designer's Republic did for Autechre's LP, - access to Wav files you can download so you have the release in electronic format as well - I heard of some rock bands including a DVD of their live performance with the package with the vinyl LP - heavyweight, better quality vinyl (the last Shpongle's album vinyl edition is HEAVY) - perhaps some sort of artwork on the vinyl itself - extra length posters of some sort .just some ideas I've heard and seen people do that would be cool to see more of in Psy scene. I think it's inevitable when you factor above ideas and shipping costs from the label to distributor and distributor to the customer such a release would cost a few bucks more than a "regular" CD or a download, but not unreasonably expensive based on what I've seen. Hell, I'd much rather pay $20 for an extra cool vinyl LP that also includes Wav downloads, than $15 for Wav downloads alone they charge today.
-
I think the one you have is this one: http://www.discogs.com/Shpongle-Are-You-Shpongled/release/35888 From what I gather, the first 1000 copies of the "regular" vinyl were numbered with that label and subsequent represses were not. That "clear vinyl" LP is a separate special edition of 350.

Interesting points so far. I'm pleasantly surprised that 7 out of 10 people said "yes" to the special vinyl editions. I thought some would be into it, but not majority. Speaking of limited adition LP's here are some pictures to check out (scroll down each page to see the actual records): Are you shpongled ltd edition vinyl: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1120451 Tales of The Inexpressible: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1292685 TIP Mu Clear (Japanese LP version) http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=596980 I think Autechre released their new album as an specially designed LP and whoever bought it gets to dowload the Wav files of the songs too. Check it out here: http://bleep.com/index.php?page=release_details&releaseid=23072

Apparently, vinyl records made a small scale comeback recently. Have a look here:http://wax.fm/vinyl_is_back_articles/ There's a collection of articles that describe the phenomenon that took place. According to Nielsen Soundscan, vinyl record sales have doubled from 2007 to 2009. It's interesting how some bands and small independant labels (outside of psy scene) are making custom made, limited editions for their fan base and doing quite well. I especially like this article: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/business/s_658619.html Not sure if you noticed, but Shpongle has released a small , limited, hand numbered edition of their last album "Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland" on vinyl. There were 300 LP's made, 270 of which were sold commercially and 30 kept in Twisted archives. They sold out on their website in a matter of a few weeks. Asked them if they have any left, but they are all gone, much like a few fans on their forum board that found out about vinyl LP release too late. Anyways, I'm wondering if any people here would still be willing to buy records if they were available, perhaps as some sort of a special edition? You can cast your vote above, so let's see what happens. I say, I would still be willing to buy them if they are somehow offering something different than the CD medium.

This is a little off topic but. Elysium, I'm curious what do you think about Zenon label's output in the last 2 or 3 years and their minimal progressive, yet very psychedelic (at least to my ears) approach and artists such as Sensient. I just got Sensient's last album and heard it on my home system to expose all the intricate detail and really find it worthy mentioning as a bright spot in today's sea of formulaic music. This is a huge deal for me because I never was a fan of minimal styles. This however is something different. Youtube compressed sound heard on PC speakers will not do it justice as I find his music to be really about the intricate details, but have a listen anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJnYXX6BipI&feature=related I suppose you might wanna choose 720p setting on Youtube bar below the screen to get as good of a sound as possible I agree with you on the old sound of Koxbox. That, along with Psychopod was some of the most mental music ever made. However I have not heard Frank make anything nearly psychedelic since Peter and Ian left.
-
Here's a quote from Peter Candy, one of the original members of Koxbox: "we had a radioshow on a local radio around 1988 called Coxbox...we just replaced the c with a k. Kox was slang at the time for relaxing (maybe with a joint)"

Thanks I was actually looking for yours and Ka-sol tracks the most

Thanks Mars ! Unfortunately that link seems to have mp3 version only Does anyone have it in full Wav quality? Thanx
-
This comp was available for free and it's still listed as such on Psymoon website here: http://www.psymoon-records.com/psmrec003.html However, for some reason, when I try to download the Wav files it gives me an error. Would anyone be so kind to upload the Wav files somewhere in case you have them and post the link? Many thanx

Are you interested in the good old Psynews contests ?

I'd love to hear those tracks, so yeah making them available for download would indeed be nice. Also, it'd be great if they are Wav or lossless format like flac and not mp3. Thanks for digging this up Mars -
Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remixes - Release it on Ektoplazm ?
visine replied to visine's topic in General Psytrance
Look, you said it many times. You are an artist that releases to the public. You also interact with public in this forum. Therefore you'll get public's reaction. I've clearly stated that your decisions need to be respected and they are your right. I feel I'm entitled to comment as we are discussing this in a public forum. It's unfortunate that you don't feel like discussing it any more and, again I will respect that, so unless you change your mind and want to discuss further, I'll make these my closing statements in this thread....no need to lock it. Keep it Cool -
Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remixes - Release it on Ektoplazm ?
visine replied to visine's topic in General Psytrance
I thought you and Jean own the rights to the song. Are you saying Flying Rhino still owns it? The idea put forward was to release it on Ektoplazm. Why would a label that doesn't plan to release remixes any more care (unless it is indeed Flying Rhino that still owns the rights to the original and doesn't want remixes released elsewhere)? I kind of got an impression that you're the boss and make major recommendations and decisions judging by certainty of your language in the previous posts and topics OK fair enough. You don't like it and don't want your name to be associated with it. It's your right to do 100%. However, know this. Some of the people that made those remixes are 18 and 20 year olds that did let their emotions get the best of them in their exchange with you in that thread, but also all of them seem to have treasured the sound of Trance Africa Express. Maybe you don't like the remixes, hell I don't like the one I heard either, but many people do. These guys were paying you a tribute by remixing the track, however clumsy the result may be and you stood in a way of it being availabe in its full glory after entire thing was cancelled. It's this community that embraced you. You've produced progressive and house, but those were never your home. You were never accepted there and recognized the way you were in this scene. If I walk to a House party and ask people chances are noone has ever heard of Holm and Andersen, but if I go to a Goa party some people will probably know of Elysium or Sheyba. Your actions and decisions are alienating you from the community that, like it or not, is your home. You and Jean could have changed it. You just decided not to. Again, it's your right that needs to be respected. However, you seem to be concerned with the image and stature of Sheyba name that the "bad" remixes might ruin. If you are, consider the perceptions of Sheyba name in the scene now that it's all set and done. -
Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remixes - Release it on Ektoplazm ?
visine replied to visine's topic in General Psytrance
Alright, fair enough,no is a no and I accept you will not allow people to share their remixes this way. Hope you won't mind providing your thoughts on my comments below (again no disrespect meant). You are one of the few artists that embraces the free sharing of your work. A bunch of your releases are freely available on your website and Ektoplazm. I'm little surprised that you would not allow a release of remixes of your work to be available in the same medium as your original work and for no apparent monetary gain. And sure, maybe some of those remixes aren't the most innovative and you may not like them as much, but let's be honest, today you probably don't think as highly of some of your early work as you did back in a day you released it, yet you make it available (and I'm very grateful that you generously did so) Again, no disrespect meant and I accept your decision. -
Sheyba - Trance Africa Express Remixes - Release it on Ektoplazm ?
visine replied to visine's topic in General Psytrance
It could be a nice and happy compromise. Creative Commons license would allow Kris to retain commercial rights and people would also be able to download it for free. -
I'll stay away of the drama that unfortunately unfolded. If interested please read the locked "and the winner is" thread in the Artist/Label announcement section. What I'm wondering is if there would be a possiblitiy of releasing the remixes as free downloads on Ektoplazm? I realize Kris has only allowed people to share their remixes privately with friends and sites like youtube for general public, but no downloads but what if they were all publicly released under Creative Commons license for a free download on Ektoplazm? Hope Kris would be ok with that and Ektoplazm would be willing to do such a thing. It would be a nice reward for all the artists involved and people would be able to get and listen to all of them in one package. Hope this doesn't create any more drama. What do you say Kris?
