full on bass? is this full on bass?
grimoire replied to flymchigh's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
well said, couldn't have said it better myself -
It does sound as good as it looks. It's a great guitar and I'm still very happy that I bought it every time I play on it Playing slide can be pretty interesting. Although it's not my thing I use it once in a while becaue of the unusual sounds you can create with it.

I love playing guitar, every day at least an hour I also have other guitars, a jembe, a bongo, a didgeridoo and ofcoarse my computer

there was some awesome goa at 5 may in Wageningen yesterday. too bad I discovered this forum after the party...

first of all, I'm not really a fan of very minimal psy... -the bassline is very boring for me, it's just 1 tone/note throughout the whole song. The break at 4 minutes or so is very pleasant after that constand bassline. It isn't even a bassline, it's just 'bass'. -like the percussion, although maybe some of it would be better if it was a little louder, but like you said, it isn't properly mixed yet. -The soft melody like thingy that comes in after a while in the background sounds a lot like something Hallucinogen did on Twisted. It could be a coincidence, you tell me. -There are some interesting sounds and voices, but overall I think you could add some elements to make it more interesting. keep making music and be creative

Constructing the base sounds for a Full-On track.
grimoire replied to Carnage's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
well... it sounds very out of tune. the percussion is better though than before. you should read the post from a few days back about making songs in a certain key. Also maybe it's a good idea to start with something that's a little easier to make, I mean something with less layered sounds than fullon. -

grimoire replied to Carnage's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
it isn't like that. you need to get that out of your head. read my first reply here. also I think claps are very rare in this kind of music and snares are also not really used like you did it in the example. as a strart try to change the claps and snares in your example into only highhats (not a few different ones, just one type of highhat). play with the velocity of the highhats and also try leaving one out here and there -

like I said, there aren't basics to make a track a spectacular journey, it takes skill, not basics. Just modify your sounds so that they fit your criteria. listen to your fav artists and see how they do it ps your link doesn't work -
Constructing the base sounds for a Full-On track.

I think you misunderstood it. there don't have to be 4 sounds in a row (I think you mean a drum on every 1/16th note?). It's also not just the drums that make a track "full-on" but it's the whole package. Kicks and highhats are basis for drums in psytrance usually. But the bassline is extremely important too. Ofcourse it's good to use other percussion and different highhats to make things interesting, but it's up to you to play with it and figure it out. Also don't stick so much to the term full-on but just go make music and see what happens. The basis you want is something around 140-145 bpm (I guess) with a kick on every beat. for the rest be creative Also just listen carefully to some cd's you like and figure out what they use (closed eyes in the dark with headphones works best for this) Don't underestimate listening carefully, you really can learn a lot from it. Also look at the other post a few posts below this one, it's about drums too. -
that's what it's about! you have to follow certain rules if you want to make a specific type of music though. But when creating your own style just do whatever you want and make it sound good here's an example of my own usual style (not psytrance though) Improved communication I'm still working on a new psytrance track and I hope to finish it soon

For newbabyes of making music

listening closely to artists you like on headphones is also a good idea . that way you can find structure in the music, for example the way they use highhats. When you know some basics then you can be creative and do something with it. -

The price on headphones can differ a lot so a good search (google for example) will save you a lot of money! -
-good production quality -nice melodies and sounds -interesting/original percussion -I like it I'm pretty new to psytrance and I'm wondering how to make such a tight and hard kick without clipping? also what kind of reverb do you use on a kick usually(only a very small amount anyway I assume)? I'm working on a track and can't seem to get the kick right without clipping
-
I listened quickly and the first thing I noticed is that the mix could be improved. all sounds, exept for the kick have very low volume and the kick comes on top of it. you might want to increase the volume on the other sounds. hope this makes sense othr than that you have some cool melodies in the song

***Mastering Headphones***
grimoire replied to neutrino's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I have the sennheiser HD-590 and the quality is superb and they're also very comfortable to wear. but like the others said: don't master on headphones. when you do it will sound different on speakers (not better). also I thought you don't want to master with high volumes either so maybe just turn the volume down a little to keep the noise levels in your house low. Still it's good to have some nice headphones, even for just listening to music -
Need help with FL5 playlist arrangements
grimoire replied to zee_werp's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
my guess is just making a new loop with only the part you want to use is the easiest option -
no, but I'm planning to do so sometime though I'd like to hear some of your compositions
-
yes! those two albums are really great. indeed very different, but both just magical

best I've heard on here so far, nice melodies and sounds. a good complete song maybe you could put a little break somewhere in the second part of the song, that would be nice. maybe you can scoop the bass a little with an equalizer at the 250Hz frequency. I heard it makes it sound less 'muddy' -
about classifying stuff I have no clue too, I just say whatever comes in my mind I often don't know what kind of label to put on my music too (click on the banner for my website) and that it rarely becomes what you had in mind is one of the cool things about the creative process imo. I don't think the percussion is borig (I like it), neither are the synths. But the synths is what I was talking about. they doesn't sound boring, but they do sound a little like standard preset sounds. ah hell, what do I know, I'm no pro either
-
nice dreamy chillout psy what can I say, it's nice and easy to listen to the only thing I would like to see changed is some sounds, sounds kinda old computergameish. Or maybe a little like a 'preset sound'. Sometimes just changing a sound a little can do a lot for a song.
-
I don't really like the first sounds (bass and gong thingy) so making those sound less 'cheap' or replacing them would be a big improvemnt. I like the percussion the starts in the beginning of the track with the changing pitch, well done, and the bassdrum is good too. Very nice and spacy melody, just dreamy with that sound and lots of reverb the melody that comes in later has some very high pitched sounds, maybe you could trim it down a bit with a equalizer so that the highest sounds 'sting' a little less. like I said to someone else; when played at higher volume such high pitched sound are unpleasant for the ear. it's only in the beginning of that second melody though.

My new demo... (-(-(Psypepper - FreeSpeech)-)-)
grimoire replied to Psypepper's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
it all sounds good , I like how you used all the percussion and also the breaks in the track. It would be nice if the melodies were a little more prominent in the song in comparision to the bass and the bassdrum. Oh and about the bassdrum; in the beginning it sounds like it's more of a short tone (laser beam kinda shooting tone if you know what I mean ) than a drum. This is just a personal preference of me though... -
shakri -new psy trance track
grimoire replied to shakri's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I agree that the song is nice. About that melody at 2:50 it's too loud imo. Sounds that high are really unpleasant for your ears at high volumes (especially on the dancefloor for example). It would probably be nicer if the volume of that sound in the mix was a little lower. Overall it's good to see you use a wide spectrum of sounds from low to high. It seems that a lot of people forget the higher sounds and melodies wich is too bad, because those sounds add some more 'color' to a song.
