Hello all, A friend and myself are writing a framework for a handy wave-editting program. We design it as a basic framework with editting and simple effects. The idea is to load additional plugin-like effects, by linking them dynamically - so they can be compiled seperately, and fitted nicely to the framework. If you have any ideas of some cool effect you always wished to make, and didn't bother because of cumbersome I/O handling here's your chance. The only thing you need to worry about, is operating directly on sample values, and cleaning up "local" memory by yourself - the rest will be managed by the framework. Let me know, if you are interested, have ideas for features of a wave-editor (besides effects). The framework compiles easily on Mac OS X and other linux/unix based systems, and requires the libsndfile and SDL libraries. Eventually, it will be possible to get a binary snapshot, so you only need to compile your own effects. It will be ready for easy effect-pluging-in in about a month or two (with consideration of unforseen problems and events...). -A - Oh yeah... We also need a snappy name for it

Interacting Music Making Thread
Amygdala replied to Psychocell's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
1) What programs you use, and any hardware instruments, midi controllers, etc (PC Specs too)? Logic, running on my G4 powerbook - controlling Roland JV-2080, SH-1, Juno-106, TR-606 & 707, Korg Prophecy, Waldorf MW-XT, AKAI S3200. Also contributing: MAM VF-11 vocoder, Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, and an old linemixer for warm overdrive - a patchbay, and a digitech effect machine. 2) On average, how long does it take you to build and finish a Song? Since i have way to little time to compose, a couple of months is the average I guess. 3) Which parts do you find tedious when building your track (if any), if it pattern sequencing, automation, etc? I hate cleaning up excess effects, and bouncing parts to create more computational headroom on my 5-6 years old mac. Also - whenever I have a really phat groove going, I tend to do very little about it, because I'm afraid to ruin the atmosphere with leads and stuff. 4) Where did the inspiration come from to start producing music? A recording of Der Dritte Raum's live-performance in Copenhagen '95 (or '96?) 5) AND Your favourite style to produce? Various... At the moment dark delta-ish tech-trnace prefereably bellow 130 BPM - some composer-game music with childish atmoshpere -
I did a little search, but nothing came up. However, I have (on cassette tape) a recording of a live-performance in 1996-97 - the last half at least. I long planned to digitalize it, and when I do, I'll notify psynews edit: oh yeah, and crap: The new album is already sold out at the major web-shops -A

Some facts need straightening up Der Dritte Raum are not "they" - they're only him (Andreas Krüger). That other guy helps out live, but that's pretty much it. The first album is not really an album, but the 5-track E.P "Elektro Disko" from '94 - I'm pretty sure Mental Modulator is from '95. If you get the chance, check out "Elektro Disko" - it's terrific. It sounds slightly more modern than MM and Wellenbad, and way newer than '94. I haven't checked it out myself, but another side project from Andreas Krüger is "Der(/die/das?) stern von Afrika" or something similar - it's supposedly good The albums are good, no question there - but where they are good, the live-performances are even better. If you ever get the chance, take it. Doesn't matter if you have to travel around the world - it's da bomb (das bomb?). In the old days, two seperate setups were used, with no actual syncronization. Andreas and that-other-guy just played by ear - it was sooo cool, the way a random drummachine suddenly decided to play it's own tune, and they had to adjust tempo on the fly. The cross-overs between the setups created some damn cool interludes that were neither here nor there. Awesome. - Oh well, I could talk DDR all night, but since it IS night... Goodnight -A edit: I forgot - DDR - the webpage. There are snippets from the new album, and it's very promising!

I have that too!! It's really great. I can only think of one downside... One second of stereo sound is approx. 819000 gigabytes of space... That sucks a little -A

Is it just me, or does this look perverted?
Amygdala replied to pr0fane's topic in General Psytrance
Hahaaa - I was waiting to see when someone would see it - that, and I didn't know that "pestle" word -A -
Yup - and imagine if it was "true" - then Gödel could prove god wrong. It wouldn't be the math and logic world that would be appaled if that was so -A
-
Hehe, I reckon Paul Erdos is not exactly right -A
-
Aaah yes... Gödel. I still remember the lecture where this result was proven (edit: obviously when it was proven to ME - I'm not that old, hehee). I hadn't really found the interesting core of computer science yet, but I had to sit 5 minuttes after that lecture, and just think - or just - hmm, the verbification of "intuition" That was a cool lecture - and a pretty darn nifty theorem. -A
-
Oh yeah, I heard that too! That's nuts to think about... Who comes up with this kind of stuf?!? Tarski, I guess My math skills aren't very impressive, but I was sort of forced to learn for my thesis. It was fun though, and it got more fun, the deeper I dug into it. It's so cool, that pure number-crushing can be used for aesthetic purposes. -A
-
Anytime Actually, I did my master thesis on FFT, used for pitch-shifting. Is pretty much the same as time-stretching, since if you can timestretch perfectly, then you can pitch-shift perfectly - and vice versa. I made a realtime algorithm extending the SuperCollider language. Great fun, and I leanred ALOT of math in the process! -A
-
Oh no, it's not really that complicated and difficult. You don't need to have any rhythm-detection and such, to write a decent timestretch... Also, that would not work with non-rhythmic sound. An FFT based solution is to compute the discrete fourier transformation (can be done easily in matlab, or sh*t-fast in C with the FFTW library) - and then insert more frames than the original sound has to stretch, or remove some frames to time-compress - and finally applying the inverse FFT. A niftier solution is to interpolate between frames though. Then there is the issue of phases, which often need heavy correction - but it's not that hard... If you want, I can dig out some cool articles - else, look for Jean Laroche and Michael Dolson. Many algorithms (spelling?!?) work entirely in the tiime domain - still without rhythm detection. Granular solutions are good. -A

That's a nice page!! I had given up hope of ever getting my Juno-106's dead voice repaired... Now I hope again -A

Just a short demo so you guys could help me out
Amygdala replied to Stalker's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Okay, so I heard the new demo - better atmosphere in the intro, as you probably are aware of. I don't really hear any difference in the low-end though. I think it would be a good idea to boost a little in the sub-100 Hz area, where the real warmth is. If I get the time, I can show you what I mean, but I'm hard pressed right now :| I come back later -A -

I'm can't listen to your new demo right now, but I ill you soon - when I say "the music itself is another matter": I think it's really good. It has that cold eerie atmosphere, that I try to create myself... So don't worry about your artistic impression - it's fine as far as I know Okay, so... Hmm. I'm slightly drunk, and my gf is here so I better go - we'll talk later! -A -

Amygdala replied to Stalker's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I know about less than perfect producing speakers. I'm on Hi-Fi speakers and headphones only -Anywho: Of course, it's also the music itself, but the track is very very cold. I think you can safely boost the low end significantly. Maybe entirely, or just kick/bass. It seriously lacks "oomph", and doesn't really dig deep. Other than that, it's also "flat" and wanting dynamics. Maybe that will appear if you enhance the low-end... Let's have a look-see - The music is an entirely different matter.... -A -
It's been three years, since I read DAFX - but I'm pretty sure MatLab is sort of implied in it - and used as a tool for teaching the algorhithms. The theory of DSP is the main focus, and exemplified in MatLab. -A
-
Goodness gracious, yes - that is expensive. I remember it as half that price or so - If you look through the table of contents, you can find names of algorhithms, and maybe google them - they should be out there -A

Samples from Der Dirtte Raum
Amygdala replied to Amygdala's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Strange - I'm on mac too, and had no problems whatsoever... -A -
THIS is a good place to start -A
-
I like the Tunnel very much too... I came to think of a piano-keyboard that spirals ever inwards... That would be cool too! -A
-
I have some AKG K240 - I bought them 7 years ago, and they've been used ALOT since - and are as good as new. I can't mix exclusively with them, but have to use reference speakers too - I think that's quite normal...? -A
-
Hi all On my trip to Der Dritte Raums webpage (he has a new album out!!), I pressed download on the page - guess what? Free samples, and lots of them. Most of them are phunky and really good - check it Der Dritte Raum -A
-
Just had a look at Der Dritte Raum's page: "Das neue Album ist raus.... Der kleine Korg und das Echo" - OOOH YEAH!!
