Katalepsis - Sun reflected on snow (progressive psy mix/2011)
Tatsu replied to Katalepsis's topic in DJ Promotion
Listening right now and the first few tracks are awesome! -
Very nice mix of goa and nitz, haven't heard nitzhonot in quite some time. I especially love the track around 59/60 minutes, and the rest after that is mindblowing too. Thanks for sharing that!

Obviously this happens but imho DJs who get payed gigs and use stolen (which it is in this case for me) MP3s to dj with are a shame. Just because it is a new trend doesn't make it right. And imho this ruins the scene way more than lots of stuff that we talk about on the forum.
-
Exactly my thoughts, and because of that you can call any stuff you want a release, this line is still there. That's what I wanted to say with my post. Well, maybe you should say it does not apply to ALL users. It sure does for some. I don't know which users make the majority but the fact that there are still labels, like Suntrip for example, that are releasing albums that bring in enough cash to release more stuff hint to me that there is still a fair number of people who care about cover artwork and professional mastering.
-
I guess it doesn't matter what the "official" psynews definition for a release is, there is quite a quality difference between a crappy mastered (or not mastered at all) mp3 on youtube and a release like you describe it. Some people don't care for that as long as they can download it for free but enthusiast like me appreciate a release with a certain soundquality and even better a cover and what not.
-
Well, in my head a release was always some kind of "thing" that could be used to DJ, no matter if it's mp3, cd-r or whatever. So if an artist sees his soundlcloud track as release then maybe he should provide enough quality so that it can actually be used. Talking about discogs, I vaguely remember that there is the option "not on label" which would fit for tracks released on soundcloud. Youtobe on the other hand is imho not a real source for downloads. I mean sure I get tracks from there with a programm that rips movies into mp3-files, but again quality is most of the times really bad.

Spiritualism and drugs in the psytrance scene
Tatsu replied to djmaxfactor1995's topic in General Psytrance
I can't talk about international parties but here you can't find a set that is not beatmixed properly. Sure, there is Goa Gill but that is one single DJ and as far as I know he never could beatmix. So you know what you get when you book him or go to a party where he is DJing... But being able to beatmix does of course not say anything about the quality of the tracks, that's another story and depends on your personal taste. I wonder how you define a person that qualifies as hippie? The drugged up freaks that dance for 12 hours straight fall most of the times in the category "tweaker" and not hippie. At least in my area. That would explain the fast and monotonous music, too. Which is, again in my area, not that much of an item. Or maybe I should say it is but if you check the flyers and online forum about the parties you want to visit, you can guess what kind of music is played and refuse to attend parties that don't fit your taste. I know I always sound like I want to defend the scene. Which is not my goal, I don't like every single thing in the scene either. I just see so much more going on than the stuff described in a lot of threads here. So many musical styles, so many different people, also different drugs, different parties (from the size, location and what not)... I wonder more and more if this is only the case in cozy little Switzerland or what? About your drug experiences and stuff: it's interesting to hear what you did back in the days, also how you perceived parties and what not. I just wonder what the connection of those drugs intakes and the rest of your text are. Maybe you care to explain how those are linked? -
I just played two hours of Thunderforce III on the good old Mega Drive. Quite an amazing game even when I think it was pretty much inspired by Gradius/Life Force on the NES. Only with better graphics. I made it into the last level and I think I could be able to finish it when I try some more. Or maybe there are more worlds that are not shown on the map yet.

I'm listening to the mix right now, I'm just at the beginning so I can't say much. It sounds very nice so far. I'm not sure what you want to tell me tho. I mean I don't see a real issue with the scene, at least not here. Sure you have some fucked up party goers/parties, commercial events and albums and what not but to me personaly the scene is more alive than ever. You have lots of different parties with all styles, in all sizes, indoor and outdoor. There are more albums comming out that I would by than I have money. I can choose whatever I want from all the options while back in the days there were maybe 2 parties per weekend. Not that this was bad but there was not much to choose from. And from my point of view the people were as fucked up as the people (some of course) are nowadays with "regular" people comming to the parties just for drugs. I started to go to parties around 2000 and the complaints were the same than nowadays: the music gets to commercial, too many youngsters taking drugs and so on. I also have several DJs (local ones) that I really adore (because of the music they play, not of fame reasons or their looks) and who are able to really take me on a trip on the dancefloor. I also manage to get surprised by rather unknown acts that I stumble upon and who blow me away. Sure there is the commercial part of psy but I can easily avoid it when I want to. Edit: btw. the part around 22.15 is awesome!

Imho a very, very nice description of the differences between those albums! And very much the way I feel about them. I mean I love both of those albums and matching them up like ying and yang makes sense to me. To me they do belong together and also the terms goa and psy do since for me they are psychedelic dance music. If because of that goa and psy are the same lies in the eyes of the beholder I think. The distinctino makes sense to me since it helps to find albums for each style and making it easier to describe what I'm looking for. On the other hand since people don't always use the same standarts when talking about goa and psy it can also be confusing.
-
Feel free to do so! I think the debate about psy and goa is interesting, doesn't matter if we agree or not. Depending on the intensity of your ramblings (as you call them ) I'm not always sure if I really get what you're saying. But we still manage to talk so it's not a problem I guess. To keep up the subject: I've listened to several tracks of both albums and to me the difference is that Twisted (which is Goa for me) is somehow softer and more melody driven (in a swirling way, not in a cheesy way) while Lone Deranger feels faster and harder, but also in a melodic way. Maybe also a little input about the whole religion thing. I'm absolutey not a fan of any organised religion and I personaly don't believe in god (I still think he could exist, means I'm an agnostic). People who want to lecture me about their religion and about how it is the ultimate truth make me angry. But not all people following a religion or a believe are that way. I do believe that there are people in the scene who practice/follow hinduism (or Buddhism or whatever) not only with hanging some fluorescent pictures on the wall and being all shanti-shanti but with the truth of their heart. If they don't lecture me (talking about it is perfectly fine of course) about it I see nothing wrong with that. The decoration inspired by that (or inspired by the people who only follow it as a trend or whatever) does not bother me. I can see it as a piece of art and if it's nice according to my taste I like it. I mean disliking the use of the symbols is one thing, to each his own. But because of that making the judgement that everybody in the scene just follows the flow and does not honestly believe in that stuff is quite a generalisation that might make some people angry. I can even understand them.
-
I think it's up to you to decide for yourself if you want to stay here (as long as you act accordingly to the rules). No poll can do that for you imho. Btw. if you want to discuss stuff that is not directly related to psytrance (the music I mean), like drugs, philosophy or religion, you can use the off-topic part of the forum.
-
Yes, obviously. I was also more talking about DJs playing some prog morning sets with a mixture of psy-prog, minimal, prog house and whatever else they have in their case. With the key theme of being psychedelic obviously. To me if stuff like that, when mixed together well, can give the partying experience a whole new twist since it's way less predictable.

Spiritualism and drugs in the psytrance scene

I see the problem but maybe you should not set some personal experiences from your surrounding as standart for the whole scene or even the world. -
Spiritualism and drugs in the psytrance scene
Tatsu replied to djmaxfactor1995's topic in General Psytrance
From my personal experience this scene is the one that denies drugs by far the least. For the good and the bad that comes with that... -
Playing different styles has imho nothing to do with confusion but with opening up. Playing prog-house, minimal, techno mixed with progressive psy during daytime is not that uncommon here. But Psyshop's labeling of the releases is another thing. It's just
-
Very interesting point of view, and a very philosophical one too. But since we're talking about art it makes sense somehow. I mean goa (or psy or both) is a way of living for some people so there is a connection. To me personaly qualifying goa trance as a genre paradox just because we can't agree to a objective border between goa and psy feels wrong (which is a subjective feeling, not an objective one). But since music is art it all depends on your personal perception. In the end either you like the music or not, even when we don't have the same definitions for the terms we use, we are still able to talk about and give recommendations or whatever. Imho this is worth more than an universal definition of each style.

I wonder how many masks are allready sold (if any), anybody knows?
-
Greenhouse Effect - Ende Of The World (the whole atmosphere) Reefer Decree - Nightvision (because of the melody at the beginning that goes through the whole track) Jaia - After The Rain and Mai Mai (I don't see Mai Mai as sad but still somehow as melancholic) Paragliders - Oasis (ok, it's more trance than psy) Yahel - Last Man In The Universe (to me somehow uplifting and melancholic at the same time)
-
Yes indeed! I was listening to Greenhouse Effect - The End Of The World when I wrote my reply and I was trying to identify its dark- or lightness. I mean the sounds are light, not over-the-top bassline or dark atmosphere. But it is also not uplifting but rather melancholic. I would still classify it as light. Some other tracks by Sandman would be rather dark for me in comparison.
-
I voted for light, not exactly a surprise I guess. On the other hand I wonder where the border is. I define it for myself that I'm more into high tones instead of dark pounding basslines. It does not have to be cheesy morning sound but a squeaking acid line does the trick too.

Very nice! Thanks for posting those youtube clips. I didn't know about the return of Perfecto Fluoro, especially with such massive releases. I've always been a sucker for regular trance but I haven't bought any trance records in ages. Most stuff didn't move me at all and I got bored digging trough new stuff just to find nothing I would like to buy. But this... Are they only releasing on beatport or are there also any vinyl or Cd releases planned?
-
Obviously, if I would think different about the forum I would most likely not use it. I fail to see how an artist can or could not switch his style from one album to another. To me personaly, the differences in those albums are enough for me to warrant a disctinction. Not as rule for everyone to follow or as a general truth but for me personally. Well, I say that for me one is Goa, the other is psy. You say that "we" (who is we? you and me? the community? the scene?) use the same attributes to identify psy and goa, so there is no difference (if I understood that correctly). I personaly don't seem to use the same attributes as you because I feel/hear a difference. Unless you refere to my statement about how the therm goa is used in Switzerland, which is a different thing than talking about general labels for music. Anyway, I'm for sure not asking you to make a difference because of my personal perception if for you there is no difference. I just stated why I think it is valid to have two terms. Even if they don't mean the same thing for all the people. I didn't say anything about stealing from Hallucinogen or IM. I said that to me he does not sound like a copy of those artists. Well, besides the fact that the music sounds accordingly to the psy genre... To my ears, just because one element that was used by an artist before is used by another is not enough to make the whole track sound like something from another artist. For me there is more, like the atmosphere that is created and the emotions that a tracks creates/give me. Which is a personal thing obviously and of course people might perceive that differently. I also don't think you have to buy that (or any other) album. I just said I like it. I agree about people using different terms for the same songs sometimes. And in some regions they can even have a very different meaning. Makes the whole thing very complicated. Checking out psy and goa records is obviously the way to go since I like both. It's still comfortable if people try to use the names seperately (even if they don't use the same parameters like I would) to distinguish the music, so depending on my mood I can listen to some new stuff.
