Simply one of the most fantastic pieces of Goa ever released... conceptually it is completely solid, with plenty of diversity. This is actually an album I throw at those who don't know the music but are intrigued - here, try this. I'd have to go back and give it a really detailed review but I might grace this one with full marks as well, though it is certainly no less than a 9/10 for me. Mai Mai sits on my all-time top ten best pieces of music ever.

After buying something I usually give it a fair chance... reviewing helps me get a grip on a release - maybe there are some songs that require repeated listening to show promise, or maybe its another one for my pile of stuff to sell. I wouldn't really know unless I made a thorough review

Twisted was a landmark that set the standard for complex Goa trance... the production isn't so great on that groundbreaking debut, but in this period of time he worked with many artists - The Infinity Project, Dick Trevor, Space Tribe, Doof, and Slinky Wizard - and helped to forge the sound. For that we can give him respect. The early tunes that he helped to produce generally sound better than other songs from the group on their own. Later with The Lone Deranger he really came into full bloom with what I consider to be great production and incredible song-writing skills. It is so completely different and unique and utterly mind-blowingly psychedelic that one cannot help but trip out listening to the album. Shpongle came out around that time as well, another masterpiece. What's not to love? The years after TLD were slow - some good songs, some mediocre stuff... in the post-millenial era I agree that the sound had become too polished at times, and wasn't so exciting... however, his new collaborations - especially on Unusual Suspects 2 - are wickedly psychedelic. I do find his music to be as good as the reputation... he's made some of the best Goa trance ever conceived, and his trance remains very psychedelic to this day. I don't see how I'm wrong - that's their personal approach to rating. I'd say their reviews have far less value than some others who take a different approach - but that's why different reviewers have different values, just as the releases do.

Ratings are always relative - there really is no other way. But one may develop a personal system of ratings that makes some sense and follows a certain kind of logic. I've listened to a lot, and developed my taste, and when I get right into a release to do a thorough review (see several examples in this forum - long long posts) I'm able to arrive at a satisfactory number usually. It's done based on averages... 5/10 for an average release - the common ones, where there is no special need to buy one over another. After reviewing over a hundred new CDs I came to have a good sense about what I would be handing out marks from 6 to 10 for - above average (6) / good (7) / great (8) / excellent (9) / perfect (10)... sometimes I would go back after looking at the list and fiddle with the values, but generally I arrive at a system that works. I emphasize the word system to note that the ratings have more meaning when they are carefully chosen in consideration with what other music is available out there. It seems to work anyway... I mean, the little number at the bottom of a review only means so much - the words above that will tell you a lot more. Some people want a quick reaction however, so they can be useful - as long as one has an idea of how a reviewer comes up with that rating! I see too many people rating everything above 6 - and at that point you really only have a scale out of 5. Well, couldn't talk a lot longer on the subject but this is already quite enough

Stop complaining and start your own poll! And then I'll start a poll about which poll is better! HA! But I agree, Why? shoulda made the short-list, it's inccccrrreedible. MFG in general is just very good - never understood why they were always in the shadow of other big Israeli names I shall not mention here who didn't have nearly the musical breadth these guys did.

WHAT?! Did I just walk into a discussion on funky psy that forgets about EAT STATIC??! Oh wait, phew ^^ just above here. Get the albums Crash 'n Burn and ESPECIALLY In the Nude! Get 'em!!! I tend to find that the true funky psy is often found in obscure places... Sinister Funk - Jungle Funk for example. You have to go digging UltraPop on Fabula recs is one of the very very few I've seen that delve right into it for a whole album. Go back many years to Symbiosis and their compilation entitled simply "Funk" and I tend to feel that they were totally missing the point. That is one seriously unfunky record. I don't think its fair to say funk is simply a groovy feel to the music... I gotta hear the guitars and disco samples people! Haltya do a great job on the original side, but many other artists have an effective us of samples... funky psy rocks! Get shakin'!

Hmm... gave it many tries, since I am an old school fan after all, but the end judgement is - pass. I couldn't get into it. There's some cool melodies but - eh I don't know. I couldn't even quite put my finger on the problem - the music simply didn't engage.

I have such a tough time mixing the misted muppet's material... the kick is more on the Goa side, not these deep rumbly things... and the bpms are often much higher than the rest. This is breaking the formula, giving me a rare challenge in mixing new music, and damn it's good!

Well, I did manage to get two tracks from CHI-A.D.'s Earth Crossing released and I've certainly DJ'd a lot, made plenty of reviews, and been very active and enthusiastic in spreading the sound... but what I'd really like to do is start producing.
