What warrents a 10/10 album? How do you score?
Basilisk replied to Jon Cocco's topic in General Psytrance
I use my 10/10 rating VERY sparingly. For me, the album has to be PERFECT... not just great, not just excellent, but FLAWLESS. That is the meaning of the complete rating. Look at Infected Mushroom's Classical Mushroom - amazing music, but there are some tracks on there that aren't so excellent, and there are some bad samples in use, and essentially I could find a few flaws. I might give it a 9/10 but not the 10/10 rating for that reason - there are flaws, however minor. Looking through some of the reviews I have sitting here on my computer I see only ONE album that has hit the mark: 12 Moons - Solid State -
One of my favourite MWNN songs... to fully experience this you must hear it outdoors under the stars... first time in my DJing career that I played this was on the Niagara escarpment at the peak of a meteor shower. Imagine that!!! How about... COSMOSIS - COSMOLOGY... the whole damn thing

ECO. and I agree. Never had a big thing for his Goa, but after his metamorphosis... gold! I heard this compilation once today and I'm very impressed. Now THIS is psychedelic trance!!! I'll be buying it as soon as it comes out. Lucky me also found the first Unusual Suspects at a used CD shop (and its hella rare to find psytrance anywhere in my city) for 12 bucks. Now I finally own Fortean Times, joy Go Twisted!!!

I actually will admit I have a soft spot for Safi Connection - Do You Feel... I dislike the group, I dislike vocals, but it's catchy and somehow works. For shame! *kicks own ass*

...and that's another thing!

Beatmatching is easy. There's really no excuse to be sloppy at it. Good selection AND good beatmatching is what makes GOOD DJING. Form AND function, mmmkay?

If I'm going to listen to something mixed I usually throw on DJ Nivoc's Infinity mix...

One day... I will hear this song remixed into an amazing 12 minute long epic to match the original... this is digging, and I'm not sure if anyone knows it, but it MUST be done... Jon & Vangelis - The Friends of Mr. Cairo I mean, check out that bass line, the melodic progression, the cinematic progression... lose most of the vocals (all but a hook at a key transition or two), and this will work very well in the right hands. The Swedes could handle it!!

It's not about supporting the artist or whatever - it's about owning the masterpieces and hearing them in their full glory. Don't tell me that an amazingly mystical album like IFO doesn't have frequencies at work on your subconscious that the mp3 format fully preserves.

I do wonder why no one really connected doesn't put out a "from the vault" sort of compilation with really rare old school and unreleased. Jaia has several nice songs that never made it for example - and who gets to hear them? Not many! Or how about the really rare? Who actually has Mushroomman - Crystaldelic in audio format? or whatever - there's a million examples. I still think the tracks they selected aren't a very good representation at all.

If we get 2CDs and a CD single where a single CD album with all the best from the batch would be superior I think we'll be calling it a milking. New explorations sounds good though! Maybe wizzy can pull off that electro-punk thing like no one else has been able to. It's been done before but not to my liking... hmm anyway, where'd all the industrial fusions go anyway? damnit

Whether this is going to be a good year for festivals in Ontario is anyone's guess... but they could be decent. I though OM last year was rather nice. Teknival has potential (I've gone every year) though so far its been a bit of a sketch fest in the deep woods. I had more fun romping around a waterfall than I did playing beats or dancing around. Teknival will probably happen again this year but I'd wait to see if they try any changes in the approach. BLA or Eloko might have a festival again, who knows? Morning star was ok... had potential. Quebec has some big ones. There's Omni down in NY state which I hear is great... there are a few things around here to choose from to augment any international travelling you might do.

Ah, Wizzy Noise. They started out having some great early hits, putting together these incredible drum lines that fused so wickedly with the psytrance sound. Shores of Freedom, Twisted Love - sounded like they were getting psytrance back on the right track. But the albums didn't represent the best side of their work. They were fine for a listen but contained too much filled for my ears. Now that they've had four full albums out I've reached the conclusion that they're like Windows - each new version sort of makes the old ones obsolete, but you don't necessarily like how polished or user-friendly it has grown. I purchased Elektro Theatre and enjoyed it but couldn't tell you a stand-out track. Stereo Electric has some real hits on it that show a new direction which I must admit I like - this sort of epic trance feeling fused with elements of their old percussive fetishism and new school full-on vibes. Reverisible for example - what an anthem! It just rises and sweeps out of the stereo in a huge way. Sadly, with their high level of output there are more misses than hits. It used to be that a Wizzy Noise track on a compilation was cause for excitement, but nowadays I won't go out of my way unless there's a real stand-out tune... and even then - if I miss one thanks to their frequent appreances on crappy full-on compilations I'll just wait for one I like. The problem is mainly that their singles often sound too subdued these days. Interchangeable, if you will. It reduces the value of their sound, and it doesn't seem as if they're really exploring their full potential. Have they ever attempted breakbeats? An ambient/psy fusion in the crystal skulls tradition? An epic 15 minute long scorcher? Something more on the progressive side rather than merely tech-trance influenced? There's all sorts of things they could be looking into but it sounds as if they're playing it safe and sticking to what they know best... where's the excitement in that? It fades through the years. They will continue to make a few good hits and lots of filler, I would imagine. But the hits really are bloody good, I must say.

Here, let me take your mind off doctor fugly over there. Prepare to be hypnotized by the inverted cyclops baby!

The Eternal Basement track is pretty good, sure, but its on Eternity vol 2 and Destination Goa 9 I believe... there is some overkill here, for a "history of trance" album. I think Flying Rhino did it best with the Retrodelica series - those songs were not widely available for the most part, and still quite good.
-
I think Jon Cocco's original post sums it up quite well... the new Rumble Pack material hasn't yet grabbed me either. I think it just needs "more". Mad Robots is a good sign however...
-
What a weird bunch of selections... people go X-Dream crazy on these "history of trance" compilations (remember Eternity?)... well, at least it's one YSE release with Goa in the title that actually has some real Goa!!
-
I hope there's going to be another boo.reka album with better production... I like some of those songs but they sound rather bad when mixed with most other material of that nature. Still, very hellish. There is not enough hell in today's music!

werd.. I'm glad at least someone knows maybe its in response to ormion's ugly bizzatch avatar.

Maybe you missed the Psychedelic Cowboy craze?? I'm not kidding unfortunately. This was about 2 years back. I heard that fucking song all the time. twang twang twang!
