Vancouver Island Psy Party next weekend(Feb 12th)
Basilisk replied to doggBALLZ's topic in General Psytrance
I don't think Tofino is very much like any other place on Earth... I'm not lucky enough to have gone, despite two trips out west recently. I plan to hit it up this summer. Ideally there will be some psytrance parties going on when I visit even better if I could play... Here's a picture a friend of mine took at Tofino... it amazes me... -
Blue Planet Corporation - Arcana ? Cosma - Ethno-Bailick ? Lunaspice - Dreaming or Awake ?

I'm an old school fan but this artist never touched me... wasn't really into this kind of sound, so no.
-
Great stuff... it's like minimal grew up and stopped sucking. Excellent production, very psychedelic...

I enjoy 80s remixes when they're done right. Maybe even 70s remixes if they can get it as good as Loopus in Fabula's Funky Town. Depeche Mode in psytrance would be great to hear if done right i.e. not full-on. It's No Good as some moody progressive, People are People as a friendly electro-toned thing... plenty of possibilities. In fact, I wouldn't even mind hearing psytrance artists remix old stuff into something that isn't exactly psytance. There are some great producers in this scene who could do an interesting job of it and retain some of the original flavour I figure!

Any further discussion I may provoke regarding production should probably be sent to another thread

Ukiro and I think alike

Just production? I guess I'm looking for strength of composition, interesting approaches, creative arrangements. Production is like the finishing touch on a good piece of work, not the defining characteristic of goodness for me... Try out Cydonia's Funky Monkey on a big system sometime if you really value that production thing
-
I keep hearing the hype but what makes this sound any different from all the other full-on clones?
-
I've learned not to trust "them" when they say 'old school with new production'. That's a code phrase for "more unlayered full-on".

Cool, a MOO2 avatar. Anyway, this all depends on how much time you listen to trance. I spend a lot of time, so correspondingly I can get into far more releases. Plus I DJ, so sometimes I'll grab a mediocre album for a couple of good songs and then sell it when I get bored. Can't have too much music!

Pigs in Space is most consistent... a lot of his other stuff kinda sucks imho. Mostly singles and such. Some good oldies still rock it though - the first Oforia album, Tandu, etc - but you will notice that this is all of his older output.

Thoughts on an psytrance mp3 shop like iTunes
Basilisk replied to Trancehead's topic in General Psytrance
What's with the VBR love? As far as I know the only advantage is file size... and if you're looking at saving 5 megs, well - why? There are decks out and on the way that will play mp3s (Pioneer's new CDJ-200 for example) but many will not play VBR files. I don't know what the bandwidth problem is all about... I pay about 50 a month and get a real unlimited connection. I could have a bunch of files sitting at home uploading constantly and would not have to pay an extra cent. I'm sure it cannot be that difficult to find an ISP that would suit a small net shop's needs and enable them to sell wave files. I'll buy wave files any time a shop gets setup with an assortment of tunes I enjoy. The tough part is going to be getting at the full extent of a label's back catalogue, including the real oldies... I can't even begin to imagine how it might come about, but having Matsuri, Blue Room, Flying Rhino, Transient, and other giants of the past with their entire back catalogue available for full-quality download would be a dream. -
Do you all like the remix? Released on MASH recs... I think it's fantastic, maybe even better depending on your mood... darker, deeper...
-
The Menis album has a few highlights... I really enjoy Mushroom Maze and Fluff Killer, to this day. Some mid-period Semsis ain't bad - Storm in a Test Tube / Panic... Slide would be dark, non? Unstable!! Freak Disciple - Freedom Engine. Actually, that whole period of time in Rhino history - singles 19 through 29 or so... very nice

What do you figure the DJ's role is as far as mixing the psymbient styles? I've really been into albums from Entheogenic, Ott, Androcell, M-Sphere etc - but I'm not entirely sure how one would perform a set of this stuff out at a party, or make a mix for that matter. Correct me if I'm wrong - since I'm just guessing really - but I suppose the basic idea is to simply let the music speak, and focus on the programming or flow of a set rather than attempt any sort of lengthly overlapping (lacking beats I guess that's what it would be?)... I tried beatmatching some of the downtempo stuff and found that Robot-o-chan could work with Neon Tetra (for example), but one would have to cut out about two minutes of delicious intro - and for what? So I could say I were applying skillz, yo? I try to look at these things from a listener's perspective and I'm postulating that for this kind of DJing the best DJ is the one that you don't even know exists - one would simply want to hear music, seamlessly delivered, in some sort of journey, all with the smoothest and most subliminal mixing. What do you think?

I don't really like Darshan much... he's got a few good tracks though - Mind Merge and Tranceformation come to mind. There is better dark Goa in my mind... Orion's first album for one, or many of Koxbox's early pieces for example...

You forgot one options: always There is enough variation through the years to keep my ears pleased... don't just listen to all recent stuff - change it up with whatever else you've liked over the years. Everything sounds remarkably different that way.

20.5 QUESTIONS WITH TSUYOSHI SUZUKI INTERVIEW
Basilisk replied to homsy's topic in General Psytrance
I don't think I've heard a Tsuyoshi production I've actually liked since hrm... 1999, right when he says music got boring. I guess I feel that it is the total opposite The new Chemical Brothers album gets a mention... snooze alert.
