New School Goa Trance Discography (2002/3 - )
Basilisk replied to Somazoid's topic in General Psytrance
I notice Johann Bley never comes up when discussing new school Goa trance... was his last album not a continuation of his earlier work as Mandra Gora and such? It certainly seemed like it to me. -

Using Dropbox for hosting your DJ sets (2gigs FREE , no strings)
Basilisk replied to J. Hardy's topic in DJ Promotion
Dropbox is awesome. I use it like a USB key to host portable apps and tools needed to package up free releases. It also works for sharing large media like DJ mixes. Nice work getting the word out -
I think this niche is filled with some "darkpsy"/full-on/forest music with melodies like certain tracks by Imaginary Sight, Kluster, Electrypnose, Braincell, Trold, or even CPC. (Ever heard Lizard Metanoya?) It's a shame most new school fans hear strong kicks and bass and just write it all off.

Elysium Live versions - Best rated on Ektoplazm
Basilisk replied to Elysium's topic in General Psytrance
Good job... hope you don't jinx yourself by posting this here Personally I think it's a great set of tracks and will be slipping them into some sets this summer. About gigs and donations... it's been something I've been working on constantly with some successes and some failures. Ekoplex is a great example of an act that has done very well from posting free music but there are others where the response has been tremendous but no gigs have been forthcoming. Part of this is no doubt the non-standard sound of some of the artists promoted via Ektoplazm... I've really been pushing the idea that free music = no creative boundaries but of course this doesn't lead into bookability as much as we would like. As for donations, I personally pay about $300 out of my retirement savings every month to keep the site going and sold off my entire record collection to raise funds. Donations are variable but some months don't exceed about 10 euros. Not promising, no, but I am not of a mind to say "people suck" but rather "we must try something different." I plan to spend part of this summer redesigning the site and sorting this puzzle out. In the meantime I try not to inflate anyone's expectations; free music is great for exposure but translating that into bookings is often very tricky. It's a work in progress -
I think some new school Goa is way superior to the average old school release. Look at it this way: the golden age lasted from 1995 to about 1998. New school Goa has been rocking out since 2004 and shows no sign of stopping. It's had more time to develop and mature.

You can email me you know Suggestions are always welcome. I'll be spending a part of this summer redesigning the site so this kind of thing is helpful. I'm one step ahead of you re: streaming samples. Recently I've been uploaded previews of every track on most releases (whereas it used to be just one track per release). It's a bit hard to tell but you can jump from track to track by clicking on the little backward/forward arrows on the audio player.

Looks like they forgot to renew their domain. I might post this just so it has a home now. -
I monitor a lot of different pirate sites to get a sense of how much traffic is flowing through their systems. Usually it isn't a lot. Private torrent sites with ratios tend to account for a few dozen downloads at most. Some of the big forum-based trading sites that load everything on to Rapidshare account for several hundred at most. There are some big psytrance piracy blogs that might transfer much more than that (according to one Brazilian site some of their posts have tens of thousands of downloads--but that's all for Astrix and Infected Mushroom). I have no way of monitoring P2P sharing on SLSK and other such systems but I don't imagine it is as significant as direct downloads from the source. Mostly my mind just boggles at the effort some pirates put into repackaging and reuploading everything. I have been in conflict with some sites over the fact that my releases aren't hosted on Rapidshare for instance--and it is a site-wide rule that all releases must be hosted on Rapidshare. Actually, my impression of the pirate community over the years is that they tend to be very strict and rules-based despite their open disregard for intellectual property laws. In the end some traffic comes back to the site through piracy so it's no big deal. I just like the pirates to keep the info and packaging intact instead of claiming it as their own work. I mean, it's really foolish to take credit for downloading and reuploading a release by saying it was "ripped by" (insert elite hax0r alias here). Still, I try not to take it too seriously it's all sort of absurd... and just another way in which the world sometimes has no real idea what to do with free music.

DISCO HOOLIGANS - DARJEELING EXPRESS 01 - Hands Off (136 BPM) 02 - Steady Now (140 BPM) 03 - Darjeeling Express (142 BPM) 04 - Manic Guru (Album Edit) (142 BPM) 05 - Like Chocolate (142 BPM) 06 - Lifesaver/Heartbreaker (145 BPM) 07 - Hands On (142 BPM) 08 - Palm Trees (142 BPM) 09 - Palm Trees (Slow Mo Mix) (136 BPM) The notorious Disco Hooligans (Nectarios Meidanis & Jordan Bonyo) return with their eagerly-awaited sophomore album, Darjeeling Express. Since thundering onto the international stage with last year’s Clear Skies, their impressive debut album, Jordan and Nectarios have been hard at work refining their upbeat and life-affirming brand of psychedelic trance. The result is an exhilarating blend of full-on energy and progressive grooviness distinguished by big beats, fat bass lines, and crystal clear melodies. Hop aboard and take a ride on the Darjeeling Express! Mastered by Colin Bennun at the Stooodio, Bristol, UK, with cover artwork by Amalia Makri. Download it for free in MP3/FLAC/WAV or buy it on CD direct from Ektoplazm: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/disco-hooligans-darjeeling-express/

Yes, it is legal to share free releases made under the Creative Commons on P2P. The standard licence generally requires: 1) Attribution; give credit where credit is due. When you share a release in its original form on a P2P network the attribution is already embedded in file names and ID3 tags so you don't have to worry. Of course, pirate groups violate this all the time by claiming ownership of a release, removing links back to the source (often my site), and other funny business. 2) Non-commercial usage. You aren't allowed to make money by sharing the release. Probably not an issue for regular P2P usage but there are some pirate sites that use "link for cash" affiliate schemes (i.e. users must click on a link and watch an ad or something before they can download). This case would violate the terms of the licence. 3) No derivatives. You can't remix the music without permission. Also not an issue for regular P2P sharing. I think it's fine if you are sharing whole, unaltered releases without obscuring the source of the material or the nature of the licence.

If it's free why do you have all the nasty language on the back cover? Force of habit?
