Do you think that the Psytrance scene is a subculture?
Basilisk replied to Ormion's topic in General Psytrance
Yes, psytrance is its own subculture. I don't know so much about the rest of the world but here in Canada it is very concentrated, very tight. The people are different, the parties are different, and the whole feeling of the psytrance experience is very different from any other music scene. Psytrance has its own fashion, its own messaging. For all of these reasons (and more) I would argue that it is a distinct countercultural movement. -
This is a real audio treat

Why bother with "full-on" when "skazi" works perfectly well already?
-
Sorry, it's an old argument that I won't ever let rest there are lots of words that can be used to describe how awful something is... "gay" as a pejorative is just immature, if not directly homophobic. This culture should be welcoming to all people.

Can you help out with some label / artist sugestions?
Basilisk replied to illusidation's topic in General Psytrance
Hello, and welcome. It sounds like you could do well to check out much of the Ultimae Records catalogue: http://www.discogs.com/label/Ultimae+Records The genre? People typically refer to this stuff as chill out, psychedelic downtempo, or maybe deep trance (depending on whether the beat is a regular 4 by 4 kick or something more breakbeat-oriented). Some names to look up (aside from what you will find on Ultimae): Kenji Williams/ABA Structure Androcell (AKA Distant System) M-Sphere (both his albums are downbeat trance) Vibrasphere (they have both upbeat dance stuff and luxurious chill) Puff Dragon Chilled C'Quence Saafi Brothers Kuba Galaxy (Science Of Ecstasy, his latest album under this name, will likely appeal to you in a big way) Bluetech/Evan Marc (one project is pure chill with a jazzy touch, the other is deep trance/techno) By the sounds of it you might also enjoy the netlabel Thinner: http://www.thinner.cc/ Enjoy -
I have already inquired... they aren't even planning a digital download option. There is a CD promo out there according to Discogs; just hoping to run across that some time or another.

Yahel produced a handful of decent tracks but nothing I qualify as a classic. They were fine to hear in the midst of the minimal craze but nowadays... well, I don't feel as if he is (or ever was) such a big deal that I would declare whatever talents he possesses to have been wasted.

Really? I think this album is pretty good, actually. Now, the main problem is the mastering (or lack thereof), but aside from that I am really very happy with this release, and have gone to the effort of working several of these tracks into my sets over the course of the summer. The crowd favourites appear to be Edens Vale and Night Shadow, and I would personally add Hints Of Goa to the list of highlights. Yes, it could have been better--but I still like this album quite a bit!

I wish he had been more prolific... I had a hard time amassing a sizable collection of his work. Strangely, one of my favourite Holden productions is the remix he did for Depeche Mode. And that I cannot find in any kind of digital format anywhere. Just vinyl!

Progressive trance confuses me. It is, by its very nature, a rather weak definition for a genre. Both "trance" and "progressive" have been appropriated for many other styles of EDM that are more familiar, distinct, or otherwise recognizable. Still, I have found myself drawn to specific producers and productions over the years, and rather wish I could find more with the same quality. So, some examples: James Holden - I Have Put Out The Light Terry Grant - I'll Kill You (Luke Chable Dub Mix) Cassino & Laben - Unsound (Snake Sedrick Remix) Eelke Kleijn - Consequences Space Manoeuvres - Part Three Snake Sedrick & Enze Hack - The Beginning (Nick H & Eelke Kleijn Remix) 16 Bit Lolitas - Sedna Corellian - State Of Mind PQM - You Are Sleeping (PQM Meets Luke Chable Dub) Cass & Slide - Opera (Phantom's Only Mix) Purple & Lunar - Subtle Thrust So much of this music mixes beautifully with the deeper end of psytrance (and, going further back, some of it was touted on labels like Flying Rhino and Transient before their demise)... my problem is that there is SO MUCH of it to sift through; so much filler and so much misdirection. Top shelf recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and it is probably fair to assume that I've already checked out anything that made its way to Saikosounds

I am really excited for all of this

How about some old school Hux Flux? Tapper's project is apparently not the first to use the name! From: http://pics.yemii.com/swedish-dance-bands.html

JIKKENTEKI - THE LONG WALK HOME Part 1: Revelations And Moments Of Clarity 01 :: False Sense Of Security (6:48) 02 :: Ambiguity (12:54) 03 :: An Angel Takes Flight (27:22) 04 :: Chasing Raindrops (7:17) 05 :: Warmth In Cold Places (15:31) Part 2: Moving Forward In The Real World 06 :: Temporary Distractions (14:00) 07 :: Automagic (8:46) 08 :: Quietly Screaming (8:33) 09 :: Days Of The Weak (7:12) 10 :: Something New (6:20) 11 :: Different Paths (8:20) 12 :: Stepping Forward (9:11) 13 :: Warmth In Other Places (9:10) Jikkenteki’s ambitious debut album The Long Walk Home was conceived as an exploration of the nature of duality. Originally released in 2006 by PAR-2 Productions, this epic sonic journey begins with drifting downtempo and ambient soundscapes before shifting into high gear with ripping psychedelic trance and energetic grooves. Inspired by real events, Jikkenteki touches upon the full range of human emotions—from utter joy to devastating loss—and the strange sensation that results from experiencing these conflicting feelings simultaneously. This is a concept album like no other! Re-released in 2008 under a Creative Commons licence in full partnership with PAR-2 Productions! Download it for free in MP3/FLAC/WAV here: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/jikken...long-walk-home/ Purchase the original 2CD pressing from the PAR-2 Productions store for only USD$13 including shipping: http://www.par-2.com/store.html
