Hello everyone, I would like to present a new project I have been working on; a vast archive of (mostly psytrance) releases that I personally recommend: Basilisk's Essential Selections. Please read the introduction; it explains a lot about my intentions. In a nutshell, this little project provides a "big picture" overview of psytrance and electronic music history as illustrated by the releases themselves (and according to my personal taste, of course). It is not meant to be an authoritative guide to the classics and you won't find all your favourite oldies listed. This isn't purely a retrospective project either; eventually I intend to provide recommendations all the way up to the current year. Comments are welcome! And enjoy the guide... hopefully it provides you with a different perspective on psytrance and electronic music history.

Bravo, what a great write-up about the history of the site! I am glad to have been a part of it. Respect! :posford:

I am starting to build up my list of recommendations for 2008... here's a good start: http://www.ektoplazm.com/projects/essential-selections/2008/

I need to scare up a cover for Hujaboy. The image I found is rather scuzzy. The others I have not heard... but will add to my ever-growing list of stuff to check out when I have time

This topic got me thinking about making a resourceful guide to good, interesting, or otherwise noteworthy releases of any given year. I took the list I posted on page 2 of this thread and ported it over to my site (with some modifications). Although it is a work in progress at the present time, you are welcome to have a peek: http://www.ektoplazm.com/projects/essential-selections/2007/ P.S. I hope it goes without saying but this project is purely a reflection of my personal taste and is not meant to be definitive or authoritative in any way

Why are goa/psy labels participating in the loudness war?
Basilisk replied to Isao's topic in General Psytrance
Ektoplazm is a free music portal as well as a netlabel. I have not been personally involved in creating most of the releases that appear on my site. They are released by other netlabels and independent artists for whom I provide hosting and promotion, and that's about it. Mindsphere's album was released by Metapsychic Records. It was entirely their project; I just downloaded it, repackaged it, and posted it to my site. The Anakoluth EP is a different story as it is an official Ektoplazm release. I hope that clarifies things -

I wish that album could be remastered. What a shame. -
Just in time for some progressive recommendations of course, there are a lot of "minimal" tunes on the list. That is where progressive had been heading--one arm of it, anyway. http://www.ektoplazm.com/journal/progressi...t-october-2008/

I have been listening to this album a lot in recent days with the hope of finding out what Watkins was trying to do. There are a few songs here that I am really getting into, City Of The Sinful most of all, but also Mind Of The Free. The two instrumental tracks are alright but I prefer just about anything from Labyrinth to those. Inca Steppa is somewhat irritating; I mean, it has loads of promise, but something about the execution leaves me unconvinced. Tokyo Dub is a nice effort--Juno Reactor doing dubstep, you could say--but it feels empty or unfinished somehow, particularly when I hear that little hint of a melody that sounds like some track from Labyrinth. It lacks the broad scope I am used to from Juno Reactor. The last two tracks aren't to my liking. Perfect Crime suffers from poor lyrics--vacuous rhyming stuff that feels a little insubstantial even as it proves to be quite catchy. Tanta Pena? I'll give it another go sometime--I think I am usually a bit tired of the album by the time I get to it. Overall, I am not so impressed at this time.

Anakoluth - Dwelling In The Void EP [EKTEP03]
Basilisk replied to Basilisk's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
You need WinRAR or something like it to open .rar files. Check the help section on Ektoplazm for details. -
I looked through some old archives and found a few more Psylent Buddhi MP3s in 128-160k quality: Ripply Lightswitch The Mind Trick Noon Spectre Ojas Shakti (Comdis Mix) Om Mani Padme Hum Need any of these? I also have Secrets Of The Atom in unmastered 16-bit WAV somewhere or another (I played that at a few parties back in the day)... in case that one was lost too.

What music are you listening to right now?

Metal Wizard - Redefining Dark Dark Soho revival with 33% more metal guitars = pure awesome! -
POF rocks... still waiting on this new production

This has nothing to do with recent drama. I find that a lot of people mistake the "Music promotion" area for "Artist and label news." Do you suppose some small change could be made? I don't think people are reading the actual descriptions when they drop by to promote stuff. They just come in and see "music" and head right for it. Maybe just calling it "Demos and promos" would work.

Here it is! :posford: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/anakol...in-the-void-ep/ -
ANAKOLUTH - DWELLING IN THE VOID EP 01 :: In A Nutshell (9:20) 02 :: Achilles’ Heel (9:04) 03 :: Feinter Les Paupières (9:01) 04 :: Delphic Haze (9:33) Dwelling In The Void features four slow-burning arrangements from Swiss newcomer Anakoluth (Roman Hunziker), a talented young producer on a mission to meld minimal psychedelic techno with elements of cosmic Goa trance. Drawing influence from artists such as Zerotonine, Sandman, and Atmos, Anakoluth has developed an uncommon style incorporating cold hypnotic rhythms, eerie droning atmospheres, and mesmerizing melodic climaxes. Turn out the lights, pump up the volume, and set out on a mental voyage into the vast interstellar depths with the Dwelling In The Void EP from Ektoplazm. Licensed under the Creative Commons for noncommercial usage. You are encouraged to share, copy, broadcast, and perform this release! Mastering for this release has been provided by Sensient of Zenon Records, Australia. In addition to the MP3, FLAC, and WAV packages available for free download, this release is also available for purchase on CD. DOWNLOAD LINKS COMING SOON!

I'm with you on this. I never lack for new releases to hunt down and investigate. There is so much good music out there it boggles the mind... and, you know, I am generally quite picky--my only saving grace being an abiding interest in many different sub-variants of psychedelic trance. If I were focused on just old school or progressive or full-on I might feel differently... but even if new music starts to lose its lustre, there is plenty of old music I've never gotten around to immersing myself in. Life is good!

Who cares? It just creates all sorts of useless preconceptions and misunderstandings.

Just iTunes?

Feedback is always good FYI, it's sort of oddly shaped (not exactly square) to fit the jewel case.
