http://www.discogs.com/release/978644 Anyone have it? I gather it is not well-liked, but I'd like to have it for a couple of tracks... PM me if it's kicking around. Same goes with some of the other UK-style prog rock/trance crossover stuff (Nervasystem etc.) Thanks.

It is not a competition, but I'm sure both will be flattered

Move it to general. This is more of a discussion than a review.

There is never any shortage of special netradio shows scheduled at specific times... do people even bother with such things? Or are these people fooling themselves? I know plenty of people that tune into regular streams of assorted music, but these specific shows, on at particular times--I just wonder if people bother or not. Radio was a popular medium in the age before portable music players; does broadcast methodology still serve much of a purpose in an age of immediate gratification and on-demand music availabilty with P2P? Of course, one of the good things about radio back in the day was discovering music you might not have heard otherwise, but is that still happening? These are some questions for you radio fans... I'm curious to know, partially since I haven't had anything to do with any form of radio for a very long time.

VA - Opus Iridium [Suntrip Records / SUNCD10]
Basilisk replied to mars's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
I trust you guys is this the booklet project Anoebis spoke of some time ago? I am still up for contributing if so. -
What music are you listening to right now?
Basilisk replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
Cwithe - Tellus-D... trying to stitch something together here. -
I don't feel that promoters or even the artist themselves are very rigorous about ensuring a proper distinction between live and "live PA." Pretty much every A-list progressive act that breezes through my town plays a relatively short set (one hour and change) featuring the tracks from their latest album in a different order with a few unrecognizable (probably unreleased) tunes sprinkled throughout. What I don't understand is this... progressive psytrance sounds as if it would be a really good match for adding a live element to the performance--fresh loops, surprise drops, slight twists on a steady, hypnotic melody--but I pretty much never hear it. Watching Son Kite live on Youtube you can tell they take it seriously. Nuclear Ramjet reinvents their music every time I hear them, Tegma rocks out with some funky box that spits out fun snare rolls and other little nuances, Reefer Decree used to bust out an electronic drum set, and Mino had a full kit at some of his shows. Last time I saw Dark Soho the guitar riffs were rockin', and back in the good old days you could always count on Erez to riff it up on his little keyboard. Most of the other guys I've seen in the last few years simply prearranged a set as near as I can tell. No interactivity, just a robotic music presentation. It's really dull, even when I'm totally into the artist's work. The thing is, all this stuff gets billed as "live." Oftentimes the promoters don't even know what they're getting. You're right, it's a joke. That's fine by me. The choice isn't simply live or not live. I think we all recognize the innate difficulty of playing electronic music live. At the same time, there is immense potential to put a live spin on things, to truly manipulate recognizable portions of a song in real-time. The fact that so many big producers don't is a real shame. PS Tom Cosm rocks!

New Cybernetika Album: Neural Network Expansion (2007 promo)
Basilisk replied to Cybernetika's topic in Free Music Promotion
Does anyone know where Cybernetika disappeared to? This album is still a very good listen... wish there was more out there! If anyone can help, please let me know :posford: -
"Live PA" = "I am hitting play on my laptop, monitoring EQ, and looking busy."

I'm not refuting that point. Obviously there aren't a lot of women making electronic music compared to men. I'm simply arguing against natural deficiencies in creativity as being the reason for this.
-
Let this ugly topic serve as an example of why there aren't so many women participating in making psytrance (or even talking about it here on Psynews). The fact remains that you cannot open a thread about a female producer or DJ without a bunch of boys commenting on the attractiveness of the specimen, posting photos to help assess the matter, or even making lewd comments about what they'd really like to do with her. It's disgraceful, and no wonder there are fewer women participating in online communities such as this one... you would also get tired if your gender was a source of endless fascination/revulsion and always a matter for comment (as it has been in this very thread). The main problem I have with this thread was simply that one conclusion made earlier, that women are naturally less creative than men. I don't think anyone would be right to insist on gender equality; different selective pressures have acted on the different genders throughout our evolutionary history, and the genders possess different common traits. It isn't equality I would insist on but equity (fairness), and generalizing women as incapable in the creative arts is not in any way fair. Perhaps women are not as motivated to compete in the field? There are many explanations for the observed phenomenon such that callous judgements about natural capabilities simply aren't very valid.
-
No, you have taken an observation (fewer women seem to create in different fields) and arrived at a facetious conclusion (therefore women are less creative than men). Without providing rigorous evidence to move from observation to conclusion you are merely expressing a sexist viewpoint. This is not unlike the idea that women are somehow less intelligent than men because there are less world-renowned female scientists. In both instances the sociological context of individual development--the cultural norms and expectations--are completely ignored, thus I would argue your point is utterly unsubstantiated.

I've heard bad things. http://forum.isratrance.com/astral-projection-is-a-fake/

It is always appalling to find such prejudiced views being expressed in the psytrance scene. Whether it is sexism, racism, or homophobia, I don't think it has any place in this culture.

Eat Static - Future Sound of London - Juno Reactor
Basilisk replied to snowball's topic in General Psytrance
I've been on a big FSOL kick recently... Juno Reactor and Eat Static are at the top of my list as well. Totally agreed. -
Frank E is quite serious with his sets... probably the best way to experience his work is when he's playing for a long period of time (4 hours or more) as he really gets into a killer groove and just never lets up. His new music is made to be played on big rigs with crystal clear sound--all the textures emerge and strike you in the head in surprising ways... on a muddy system at a smaller party I just don't think it would be the same.
-
No, I think After Ever is a completely different song... very beautiful, I might add. It is similar to CHI-A.D.'s excellent Fluid Cluster, released fairly recently... 120 BPM-ish downtempo trance with smooth mystic melodies and all the rest, highly recommended well, that vinyl is just great overall. Edit: immediately after writing that I had one of those strange moments where the mind connects two songs in greater ways that one originally thought... no, it isn't merely similar--Fluid Cluster is a remake of After Ever! It has the exact same melody! No wonder my brain was putting them together

I dig the Kuba.
